My wife and I work with children 00:00:09.37\00:00:12.67 all over the world, 00:00:12.71\00:00:14.34 but, you know, we have four of our children, 00:00:14.38\00:00:17.15 all grown up. 00:00:17.18\00:00:18.51 And we're kind of out of that emptiness stage, 00:00:18.55\00:00:20.15 it's very nice. 00:00:20.18\00:00:21.58 And not only emptiness, but emptiness financially, 00:00:21.62\00:00:24.99 they don't come tapping us 00:00:25.02\00:00:26.35 for a loan every week, it's lovely. 00:00:26.39\00:00:28.46 But we work with some of the poorest children 00:00:28.49\00:00:31.09 in the South East Asia region, 00:00:31.13\00:00:34.10 countries like Philippines and Sri Lanka, 00:00:34.13\00:00:36.60 Cambodia, Burma, and Thailand, some beautiful kids. 00:00:36.63\00:00:40.27 And I just put a few of them up on the screen, 00:00:40.30\00:00:42.07 'cause they wanted to say hello at GYC 00:00:42.10\00:00:44.17 'cause they couldn't make it themselves. 00:00:44.21\00:00:45.94 You can wave back if you like, 00:00:45.97\00:00:47.54 but it's okay if you're embarrassed. 00:00:47.58\00:00:48.91 I want to tell you a story because, you see, 00:00:51.68\00:00:54.22 you have to forgive my lack of eloquence. 00:00:54.25\00:00:56.75 I am not a pastor. 00:00:56.79\00:00:59.29 I didn't go to theology school. 00:00:59.32\00:01:01.02 In fact, I failed school at year nine. 00:01:01.06\00:01:04.59 So I'll do the best that I can today. 00:01:04.63\00:01:06.70 But I'll tell you some stories at least. 00:01:06.73\00:01:08.90 And I'd like to take you on a little journey. 00:01:08.93\00:01:12.20 Some time ago, I was on a river in India, 00:01:12.23\00:01:18.07 The Ganges River, and I was taking a trip 00:01:18.11\00:01:21.48 to have a look at a place called The House of Death. 00:01:21.51\00:01:25.55 And as I was rowing down with my boat down this river, 00:01:25.58\00:01:30.82 I was able to see just this incredible sight 00:01:30.85\00:01:37.53 of people washing, bathing, rinsing, 00:01:37.56\00:01:41.60 drinking the water of the Ganges. 00:01:41.63\00:01:44.07 Now it's pretty dirty. 00:01:44.10\00:01:45.63 It's got floaties on the top of it 00:01:45.67\00:01:47.44 and it's brown. 00:01:47.47\00:01:48.80 You know, it look like a chocolate milkshake 00:01:48.84\00:01:50.94 or a caramel milkshake from McDonalds, 00:01:50.97\00:01:52.94 and it's thick. 00:01:52.97\00:01:55.04 But I came to the House of Death, 00:01:55.08\00:01:59.65 a quite interesting place. 00:01:59.68\00:02:01.92 And you can see there on the screen, 00:02:01.95\00:02:03.72 this building is to your left. 00:02:03.75\00:02:05.09 It looks a bit skewed because, you know, 00:02:05.12\00:02:07.72 I'm not very good with the camera. 00:02:07.76\00:02:10.49 This is a place where devout Hindus come to die. 00:02:10.53\00:02:16.63 And they believe that there is meritorious favor 00:02:16.67\00:02:20.20 in dying by the Ganges river, at the House of Death, 00:02:20.24\00:02:23.54 where they believe that they will receive 00:02:23.57\00:02:26.21 a special dispensation to eternity. 00:02:26.24\00:02:31.38 If they can die in this disgraceful looking building 00:02:31.41\00:02:36.08 and their bodies burnt by the Ganges 00:02:36.12\00:02:38.99 and the ash thrown out into the river, 00:02:39.02\00:02:41.82 they believe that there is merit. 00:02:41.86\00:02:44.36 But there is a downside to this, 00:02:44.39\00:02:46.53 rather naive and twisted theology. 00:02:46.56\00:02:49.46 And that is that some these people unfortunately 00:02:49.50\00:02:52.70 don't die quick enough 00:02:52.73\00:02:54.44 and they're taken out of the House of Death 00:02:54.47\00:02:56.71 and left in the street to die because someone else 00:02:56.74\00:02:59.97 is more open to dying quicker. 00:03:00.01\00:03:03.01 And so they are abandoned. 00:03:03.04\00:03:04.55 And this day that I was in Varanasi, 00:03:04.58\00:03:06.55 I was with some friends 00:03:06.58\00:03:07.92 and we went to the Sisters of Charity hospice 00:03:07.95\00:03:12.05 that takes care of these poor people, 00:03:12.09\00:03:14.56 these aged cripples mostly that have had strokes 00:03:14.59\00:03:17.53 and suffering and terrible pain, 00:03:17.56\00:03:19.73 and they're left to die. 00:03:19.76\00:03:21.10 There was one lady who had been gnawing at her head 00:03:21.13\00:03:24.60 because she had been left in the gutter, 00:03:24.63\00:03:26.80 was unable to move. 00:03:26.84\00:03:28.54 And I spoke with this lady from the Sisters of Charity, 00:03:28.57\00:03:32.57 a nun, spoke perfect English. 00:03:32.61\00:03:35.28 And I asked her, I said, "Why did you do this job?" 00:03:35.31\00:03:40.05 With absolute profound theological eloquence, 00:03:42.98\00:03:48.32 She said I... 00:03:48.36\00:03:51.23 Now I must preface this by saying, 00:03:51.26\00:03:53.19 the Sisters of Charity hospice is a building almost as grotty 00:03:53.23\00:03:57.97 at the House of Death. 00:03:58.00\00:03:59.67 It doesn't have electricity 00:03:59.70\00:04:01.74 and it has this old iron door that creeks 00:04:01.77\00:04:04.41 as you walk inside into the darkened room, 00:04:04.44\00:04:06.57 where these old people lay on pallets 00:04:06.61\00:04:09.28 and stretches on the floor. 00:04:09.31\00:04:11.75 And she said, with such eloquence, 00:04:11.78\00:04:16.28 "Where else would I want to be? 00:04:16.32\00:04:18.75 I get to hold these people in my arms. 00:04:18.79\00:04:21.99 And in their last dying moments, 00:04:22.02\00:04:24.19 I get to share with them 00:04:24.23\00:04:25.86 the love of our Savior Jesus Christ." 00:04:25.89\00:04:30.40 You know, this reminded me of experiences, 00:04:30.43\00:04:37.34 but it reminded me of my own. 00:04:37.37\00:04:42.58 I haven't been to the House of Death on the inside. 00:04:42.61\00:04:45.58 But you come to a time, you come to a place, 00:04:45.61\00:04:48.55 sometimes in your own life where you feel you may be 00:04:48.58\00:04:50.82 at the House of the Death. 00:04:50.85\00:04:52.19 You wonder where to from here. 00:04:52.22\00:04:53.82 And the same day, 00:04:53.86\00:04:55.39 I had looked into the eyes of these children, 00:04:55.42\00:04:59.09 desperate kids needing something, 00:04:59.13\00:05:01.56 needing food, needing shelter. 00:05:01.60\00:05:02.93 They were living in little huts with made of sticks with clough 00:05:02.96\00:05:07.70 and tarpaulin across the top of them. 00:05:07.74\00:05:10.41 And it took me back to a time in my life 00:05:10.44\00:05:14.78 where, I didn't live like that, 00:05:14.81\00:05:17.15 but where I made a choice 00:05:17.18\00:05:19.25 that I would do all that I could 00:05:19.28\00:05:21.38 to help children like this. 00:05:21.42\00:05:23.32 Let me share with you some testimonial time. 00:05:23.35\00:05:27.02 That was the last truck I drove. 00:05:27.06\00:05:28.76 I drove five million kilometers in that 00:05:28.79\00:05:31.56 and another truck from one side of Australia 00:05:31.59\00:05:33.56 to the other for 17 years. 00:05:33.60\00:05:35.80 That would be like driving from Phoenix to Maine 00:05:35.83\00:05:38.77 every week there and back, 9,600 kilometers every week. 00:05:38.80\00:05:43.94 I don't know how many miles, that is about five and a half 00:05:43.97\00:05:46.14 or six thousand miles, I think. 00:05:46.17\00:05:48.21 And it was during that time that I met this gentleman, 00:05:48.24\00:05:52.51 he was a very nice man. 00:05:52.55\00:05:54.85 And he said to me, David, he said, 00:05:54.88\00:05:58.65 let me tell you about Jesus Christ. 00:05:58.69\00:06:00.56 Then I thought, Oh, no! One of this religious nuts. 00:06:00.59\00:06:03.36 I wasn't religious at all. 00:06:03.39\00:06:05.79 And I was in this little tiny town, 00:06:05.83\00:06:09.56 we call it a one horse town. 00:06:09.60\00:06:11.33 You know, and even the horse had run away. 00:06:11.37\00:06:13.74 It was so small. 00:06:13.77\00:06:15.10 And there was my friend, he was the local 00:06:15.14\00:06:20.48 everything fix it man and I was there. 00:06:20.51\00:06:22.41 We were chatting over a cup of tea about 00:06:22.44\00:06:24.15 whatever it was. 00:06:24.18\00:06:25.51 And he was telling me about 00:06:25.55\00:06:27.08 an article he had read in a magazine 00:06:27.12\00:06:29.85 called "Lock Stock & Barrel" 00:06:29.88\00:06:31.29 some, shoot 'em up cowboy magazine. 00:06:31.32\00:06:33.79 And the article was about the new world order 00:06:33.82\00:06:35.92 that I knew nothing about. 00:06:35.96\00:06:37.73 And he was telling me about, oh, in the future, 00:06:37.76\00:06:39.83 you might have to chain down your fridge 00:06:39.86\00:06:41.33 because all the Froot Loops 00:06:41.36\00:06:42.80 are gonna come and steal your food. 00:06:42.83\00:06:44.23 You know, this is the time of the new well order, 00:06:44.27\00:06:46.03 it's all going to be weird and dangerous. 00:06:46.07\00:06:48.04 And anyway, I'm just smirking away 00:06:48.07\00:06:50.14 to myself thinking the man is crazy. 00:06:50.17\00:06:52.34 And then this guy said to me 00:06:52.37\00:06:54.31 "You will not get through the future 00:06:54.34\00:06:56.31 unless you have Jesus Christ in your life" 00:06:56.34\00:07:00.55 Well, I was very patient 00:07:00.58\00:07:02.25 and I showed the respect that this man 00:07:02.28\00:07:04.79 who is at least 20 years older than me should deserve. 00:07:04.82\00:07:07.76 And I listened how does he talked. 00:07:07.79\00:07:10.19 And he talked, believe me, he talked, 00:07:10.23\00:07:11.76 he talked for three hours. 00:07:11.79\00:07:13.46 You know, he laid out all he had to say. 00:07:13.50\00:07:16.03 I learnt so much in that three hours 00:07:16.06\00:07:17.87 that I had forgot all in that next 15 minutes. 00:07:17.90\00:07:20.00 But anyway, he was a very interesting chap too. 00:07:20.04\00:07:24.37 And he had been to all sorts of interesting places. 00:07:24.41\00:07:26.54 So it wasn't so bad. 00:07:26.57\00:07:28.01 But anyway, at lunch time, I was getting a bit hungry, 00:07:28.04\00:07:31.05 so I walked across to the takeaway food place 00:07:31.08\00:07:33.42 to get some food and he followed me. 00:07:33.45\00:07:36.02 He wouldn't give me peace. So we're walking across. 00:07:36.05\00:07:38.85 And I got my normal lunch, which was probably, 00:07:38.89\00:07:41.16 I can't remember, but it would have been 00:07:41.19\00:07:42.52 at least one hamburger or a sausage roll 00:07:42.56\00:07:44.79 or something like that and some coke and an ice-cream, 00:07:44.83\00:07:47.00 and a chocolate bar. 00:07:47.03\00:07:48.63 And then he said, "You don't need to worry about 00:07:48.66\00:07:51.83 all that stuff in the future in the new world order 00:07:51.87\00:07:53.74 because you're not going to live long enough." 00:07:53.77\00:07:55.10 and he starts pointing at what's on my plate. 00:07:55.14\00:07:57.17 And then he gives me this health message. 00:07:57.21\00:07:59.81 You know, I was very thankful for that man 00:07:59.84\00:08:03.75 because, you know, about 15 minutes 00:08:03.78\00:08:06.82 after I left that little one horse town, 00:08:06.85\00:08:10.72 I was driving in my truck 00:08:10.75\00:08:12.52 and I felt this incredible conviction. 00:08:12.55\00:08:15.09 I felt what he had in his life, I need it in my own. 00:08:15.12\00:08:19.76 You know, it was really... 00:08:19.79\00:08:22.40 It was so simple. 00:08:22.43\00:08:24.53 This man, you know, he had a lot to say, 00:08:24.57\00:08:26.43 but he had a lot of interesting things 00:08:26.47\00:08:27.94 and he talked about Jesus and it all sort of made sense. 00:08:27.97\00:08:31.81 So I drove into Perth, 00:08:31.84\00:08:35.54 a remaining six or eight hour journey. 00:08:35.58\00:08:38.15 And anyway, I got to the office 00:08:38.18\00:08:43.39 at the freight dispatch yard. 00:08:43.42\00:08:46.45 And I said there to the secretary, 00:08:46.49\00:08:48.62 I said, he is my manifest with all my paperwork 00:08:48.66\00:08:52.83 and by the way... 00:08:52.86\00:08:54.20 I actually had known him for a couple of years. 00:08:54.23\00:08:55.56 So I said by the way, I've just become a Christian. 00:08:55.60\00:08:58.60 I said, I am going to be one of the Seventh-day Adventists. 00:08:58.63\00:09:01.67 And she said, "Ah! 00:09:01.70\00:09:03.27 I'm one too" You know what, 00:09:03.30\00:09:07.38 the first thing that I thought of was, 00:09:07.41\00:09:10.48 "Hey, cool, we're both Seventh-day Adventist." 00:09:10.51\00:09:13.55 what he told me yesterday? 00:09:15.42\00:09:18.59 You know, let me just... 00:09:18.62\00:09:21.36 Don't worry, this is an appeal. 00:09:21.39\00:09:24.06 It's a challenge. 00:09:24.09\00:09:25.46 You go out of here and tell the first three people 00:09:25.49\00:09:27.06 that you know that you are friends with, 00:09:27.10\00:09:28.46 who you are and what you believe, 00:09:28.50\00:09:29.83 and why you believe it, and why you thing 00:09:29.86\00:09:31.20 Jesus is coming soon, because she didn't. 00:09:31.23\00:09:34.27 And I've thought about that many times 00:09:34.30\00:09:35.90 when the opportunity comes for you to share Jesus Christ 00:09:35.94\00:09:38.97 and you zip and sit in silence, don't hold back. 00:09:39.01\00:09:42.94 There's crazy truck drivers like me out there 00:09:42.98\00:09:44.88 that need to hear. 00:09:44.91\00:09:47.22 And so she said to me, 00:09:47.25\00:09:49.88 "Would you like to go to a youth rally tomorrow?" 00:09:49.92\00:09:54.09 Well, I said, "Yeah. Sure." 00:09:54.12\00:09:55.92 I guess it's Saturday, I won't be working. 00:09:55.96\00:09:58.39 So she said "I'll meet you at the truck stop, 00:09:58.43\00:10:02.03 I'll pick you up, we'll go together." 00:10:02.06\00:10:03.67 And in the morning, I put on my best clothes, 00:10:03.70\00:10:07.97 which was a pair of old blue shorts and a blue singlet. 00:10:08.00\00:10:11.97 You know, not this $30 suit 00:10:12.01\00:10:16.71 I picked up in a cheap market in Cambodia. 00:10:16.75\00:10:19.31 And I hate these things, I'll tell you what. 00:10:19.35\00:10:23.02 Anyway, and she comes 00:10:23.05\00:10:27.56 in this old clapped-out rusty Mazda 626, 00:10:27.59\00:10:31.46 and she's got her two sons in the back covered in pimples 00:10:31.49\00:10:34.10 and spots from too much pizza, and I think to myself, 00:10:34.13\00:10:37.83 because look at the car. 00:10:39.37\00:10:40.70 It's not gonna win anything. 00:10:40.74\00:10:42.07 And look at the youth I've got to hang around with. 00:10:42.10\00:10:43.91 I didn't know what a youth rally was, you see. 00:10:43.94\00:10:45.77 And so we... 00:10:45.81\00:10:47.94 Then I think, no, well, I did promise, so I'm going. 00:10:47.98\00:10:51.25 And so off we go. 00:10:51.28\00:10:52.61 And we arrive at this park in the middle of the mountains. 00:10:52.65\00:10:56.82 And I discovered that the youth rally 00:10:56.85\00:10:58.99 is a religious congregation and there's a preacher. 00:10:59.02\00:11:02.16 And I had asked her 00:11:02.19\00:11:04.13 when we pulled up in the car park, 00:11:04.16\00:11:05.53 where's all the fancy cars and all the hot rods, you know. 00:11:05.56\00:11:09.03 Anyway, I was learning, but it was okay. 00:11:09.06\00:11:11.17 Now there's another thing that happened as well. 00:11:11.20\00:11:13.13 I had a problem and that was because 00:11:13.17\00:11:17.71 I had just become a Seventh-day Adventist 00:11:17.74\00:11:19.64 and I just told you earlier, you know, 00:11:19.67\00:11:22.08 I used to drive a lot of miles every week. 00:11:22.11\00:11:24.55 You've just taken one-seventh of my working week away, God. 00:11:24.58\00:11:27.52 You need to provide a way out for me 00:11:27.55\00:11:29.28 because I can't physically do that 00:11:29.32\00:11:31.69 many miles in that short time. 00:11:31.72\00:11:34.02 And I needed to be able to work on the Sabbath. 00:11:34.06\00:11:36.22 I had a lot of financial commitments, 00:11:36.26\00:11:38.29 these trucks don't come cheap. 00:11:38.33\00:11:41.06 And I was up to here in debt. I needed this work. 00:11:41.10\00:11:48.07 So I prayed for two days as I drove along. 00:11:48.10\00:11:50.61 I did other things as well. Let me show you. 00:11:50.64\00:11:52.87 I learned to read while I was driving. 00:11:55.21\00:11:57.38 I used to read comics. 00:11:57.41\00:11:59.21 Anyway, it's about straight roads in Australia. 00:11:59.25\00:12:01.58 It's all right. 00:12:01.62\00:12:02.95 And honestly, I only ever ran two people off the road 00:12:02.98\00:12:08.16 and it wasn't my fault. 00:12:08.19\00:12:09.52 And so I started reading a Bible 00:12:10.79\00:12:13.90 instead of reading comics. 00:12:13.93\00:12:15.96 And I was reading 00:12:16.00\00:12:18.47 and I got to this place about Joseph 00:12:18.50\00:12:21.40 and he meets his brothers. 00:12:21.44\00:12:23.54 I'm crying, I'm reaching for a tissue in my... 00:12:23.57\00:12:27.01 You know, as I'm driving along. This is an amazing story. 00:12:27.04\00:12:29.98 And I'm reading. 00:12:30.01\00:12:31.55 I didn't know where you had to start, 00:12:31.58\00:12:32.91 so I started at Genesis. 00:12:32.95\00:12:35.72 When I got to the dispatch office 00:12:35.75\00:12:37.72 on the other side of the country, 00:12:37.75\00:12:39.22 a day and a half later, and I went into the office, 00:12:39.25\00:12:42.82 I had been worrying about this, 00:12:42.86\00:12:44.19 I had been praying about this for two weeks. 00:12:44.23\00:12:45.93 I was wondering what this man was gonna... 00:12:45.96\00:12:47.40 He was like the owner, bus person that makes sure 00:12:47.43\00:12:50.20 that you keep your truck moving 00:12:50.23\00:12:53.27 because his freight to get there fast. 00:12:53.30\00:12:55.84 And so I went in the office and I said, I need to talk, 00:12:55.87\00:12:59.21 and he sort of looked over his glasses 00:12:59.24\00:13:01.04 and he gave me that look as if to say, 00:13:01.08\00:13:02.44 you didn't crash the truck, did you? 00:13:02.48\00:13:04.55 And I said, "Look, I've become a Christian." 00:13:04.58\00:13:09.15 It all sort of fell out wrong. 00:13:09.18\00:13:11.02 I had been rehearsing this for two days, you know. 00:13:11.05\00:13:13.19 And I just said, "I've become one of those 00:13:13.22\00:13:14.86 Seventh-day Adventists and I've got to stop working 00:13:14.89\00:13:16.59 when the sun sets on Friday because it's my new religion. 00:13:16.62\00:13:19.63 And he took off his glasses 00:13:19.66\00:13:23.20 and he turned around to face me, 00:13:23.23\00:13:24.77 and he said, David.. 00:13:24.80\00:13:26.47 He said, "You need some religion in your life. 00:13:26.50\00:13:28.90 You can have Saturday and Sunday if you want it." 00:13:28.94\00:13:32.54 And you know what? I was so thankful. 00:13:32.57\00:13:36.41 You know, I didn't even check the speed limit 00:13:36.44\00:13:38.41 as I was driving down the freeway. 00:13:38.45\00:13:39.88 I was on cloud nine as I was going home. 00:13:39.91\00:13:41.85 And that's where my Christian experience really began. 00:13:41.88\00:13:47.32 Having read the Bible, 00:13:47.36\00:13:49.36 someone gave me another book as well 00:13:49.39\00:13:51.09 "Patriarchs and Prophets," 00:13:51.13\00:13:52.46 I've never heard of such things. 00:13:52.49\00:13:54.10 And it was a good book too. 00:13:54.13\00:13:56.26 And I learnt to read that while I was driving. 00:13:56.30\00:13:58.07 I got the big print version. 00:13:58.10\00:13:59.67 so I got the whole series and I read it. 00:14:02.47\00:14:04.24 And it was so good, I read it again. 00:14:04.27\00:14:05.74 It was great. 00:14:05.77\00:14:07.11 Anyway, and I thought, there's other people 00:14:07.14\00:14:09.98 that must be like me that want to hear this good news. 00:14:10.01\00:14:12.71 Let me go and find them. 00:14:12.75\00:14:14.08 So this was the pre-Google days, 00:14:14.12\00:14:16.22 you know, so I got the phone book out. 00:14:16.25\00:14:18.35 And I wanted to find the busiest place 00:14:18.39\00:14:22.12 in my home city, which is Melbourne. 00:14:22.16\00:14:24.83 The best place to be in Australia. 00:14:24.86\00:14:27.16 And it was the number 96 tram stop 00:14:27.20\00:14:31.13 in Bourke Street Mall, in the city center. 00:14:31.17\00:14:34.50 So I decided that's where I'm going on Saturday afternoon. 00:14:34.54\00:14:37.04 My mates can go and lay activities, 00:14:37.07\00:14:38.84 but I'm going to talk to few folk. 00:14:38.87\00:14:40.78 So I had walked up to the tram stop, 00:14:40.81\00:14:43.21 and before anyone could say no, I'd say, 00:14:43.24\00:14:45.25 "Good day. How are you going?" 00:14:45.28\00:14:46.61 You know, that's how we do it in Australia, 00:14:46.65\00:14:47.98 "Good day, How are you doing?" 00:14:48.02\00:14:49.35 And I'd shake their hands and say, 00:14:49.38\00:14:50.72 "I'm Dave and I want to share with you about Jesus Christ." 00:14:50.75\00:14:53.05 And before they could say no, I'd say, 00:14:53.09\00:14:54.59 "Wait a minute, wait a minute, you got to hear this first, 00:14:54.62\00:14:56.42 then you can say no." 00:14:56.46\00:14:57.79 And I'd tell them a little bit, not much. 00:14:57.83\00:14:59.43 Just simple stuff, you know. 00:14:59.46\00:15:01.03 And I'd say, "I have got something for you read. 00:15:01.06\00:15:03.47 You can read, can't you?" opening your home to the homeless poor. 00:25:35.46\00:25:38.17 We opened our schools and our homes 00:25:38.20\00:25:40.50 where we had so many other children 00:25:40.54\00:25:42.04 and we squeezed these families 00:25:42.07\00:25:43.44 in that had lost everything and had nothing. 00:25:43.47\00:25:45.64 You know, there funny guys, 00:25:45.67\00:25:47.01 they had even brought their dogs. 00:25:47.04\00:25:48.38 We had to accommodate their dogs too. 00:25:48.41\00:25:49.81 You know, like they came in the school classroom. 00:25:49.84\00:25:52.11 And they brought their cooking pots 00:25:52.15\00:25:54.35 and we would give them some rice 00:25:54.38\00:25:56.48 and they would cook it up, 00:25:56.52\00:25:57.95 but it was okay, we were helping them. 00:25:57.99\00:26:00.76 And it was at this time that many of the families 00:26:00.79\00:26:05.03 in this community got together and they came to us united 00:26:05.06\00:26:08.86 and said, we need help but we want to help ourselves. 00:26:08.90\00:26:12.93 What can we do with you to fix the situations 00:26:12.97\00:26:16.30 so we can have housing? 00:26:16.34\00:26:17.81 And so very generous people back in my country, 00:26:17.84\00:26:21.34 they raised some money 00:26:21.38\00:26:22.78 and we were able to provide housing kits. 00:26:22.81\00:26:25.85 And one representative from every single family came 00:26:25.88\00:26:30.49 and they worked and they had to do 00:26:30.52\00:26:32.29 a minimum hours of work. 00:26:32.32\00:26:34.79 And for that, they would get a housing kit. 00:26:34.82\00:26:37.33 It was valued at $220 and it had some lumber, 00:26:37.36\00:26:39.83 and some nails, and a hammer, and a few bits and pieces, 00:26:39.86\00:26:42.66 and some iron for the roof. 00:26:42.70\00:26:44.40 And they could rebuild their lives again 00:26:44.43\00:26:46.63 and have a place to sleep safely. 00:26:46.67\00:26:49.07 And so these ladies came to work. 00:26:49.10\00:26:51.57 Now this grandma came alone. 00:26:51.61\00:26:53.48 She's pretty cute, hey? 00:26:53.51\00:26:56.24 She has no teeth. 00:26:56.28\00:26:59.45 And she, you know, a hoe, right? 00:26:59.48\00:27:02.55 You know, for digging, 00:27:02.58\00:27:03.92 you know what I'm talking about? 00:27:03.95\00:27:05.65 She can hoe a quarter acre a day. 00:27:05.69\00:27:08.79 She is 64, 65 years old. 00:27:08.82\00:27:11.46 She said to me, "I have just my children, 00:27:11.49\00:27:16.10 my grand children. 00:27:16.13\00:27:17.47 There is no one else to look after them. 00:27:17.50\00:27:19.80 I am fit and strong, but I have no home. 00:27:19.83\00:27:22.24 You must help me." 00:27:22.27\00:27:24.07 Anyway, I said, "Yeah, no worries. 00:27:24.11\00:27:25.61 We'll get you started over here. 00:27:25.64\00:27:28.14 I said, "Do you mind if I take your photograph?" 00:27:28.18\00:27:30.51 And she's trying to smile, 00:27:30.55\00:27:32.11 but then she's trying to not smile, 00:27:32.15\00:27:33.48 she's got no teeth. 00:27:33.52\00:27:34.85 It was a little embarrassing moment for her 00:27:34.88\00:27:36.58 and I was trying not to laugh, 'cause I'm just human. 00:27:36.62\00:27:40.49 Stop laughing. 00:27:40.52\00:27:43.26 And, I said, "Do you mind 00:27:43.29\00:27:47.40 if I put your photo on Facebook?" 00:27:47.43\00:27:49.16 And she thought I said you've got a face like a book. 00:27:49.20\00:27:52.13 But anyway, it was okay, it was okay, you know, 00:27:52.17\00:27:55.94 she worked and she worked hard and she got... 00:27:55.97\00:27:58.74 There was another lady 00:27:58.77\00:28:00.11 and her husband was working away 00:28:00.14\00:28:02.81 and the typhoon had struck 00:28:02.84\00:28:04.18 and destroyed their possessions, 00:28:04.21\00:28:05.55 and she had some children and they were sick, 00:28:05.58\00:28:07.68 and she had no one and she was struggling. 00:28:07.72\00:28:09.98 And she said, "I can't come. 00:28:10.02\00:28:11.92 I've got to look after my sick children." 00:28:11.95\00:28:14.66 We said, "That's ok." 00:28:14.69\00:28:16.02 And she had this buffalo and so buffalo came to work 00:28:16.06\00:28:19.29 for five days in place of her. 00:28:19.33\00:28:21.63 And we reckoned the buffalo would plough 00:28:21.66\00:28:23.53 faster than her anyway. 00:28:23.57\00:28:25.37 And so, you know, but the deal was that they help themselves. 00:28:25.40\00:28:29.84 And here was a community, they wanted to help themselves 00:28:29.87\00:28:32.34 to get out of poverty. 00:28:32.37\00:28:34.18 And the day when the lumber arrived 00:28:34.21\00:28:35.81 and the building materials arrived, 00:28:35.84\00:28:37.21 they were so happy because they had done 00:28:37.25\00:28:39.58 the work themselves. 00:28:39.61\00:28:41.45 We had just provided the equipment. 00:28:41.48\00:28:44.09 And our volunteer program, you may not know it, 00:28:44.12\00:28:46.62 but you need to know, 00:28:46.65\00:28:47.99 and I'll share with you at the end. 00:28:48.02\00:28:49.36 But we have an amazing volunteer program. 00:28:49.39\00:28:51.29 And there were so many volunteers 00:28:51.33\00:28:52.96 that came from Australia. 00:28:52.99\00:28:54.73 Sorry, there was none from US but we're going to change that. 00:28:54.76\00:28:57.70 They came over and help them 00:28:57.73\00:29:00.94 and they built with their hands. 00:29:00.97\00:29:05.17 The gospel of the dirt under the fingernails, 00:29:05.21\00:29:08.58 doing some thing physical as well as just the preaching, 00:29:08.61\00:29:14.58 they go together. 00:29:14.62\00:29:16.55 And, you know, Hannah, 00:29:16.58\00:29:19.65 the Muslim lady crossing the river, 00:29:19.69\00:29:22.26 she came back. 00:29:22.29\00:29:23.63 She was the only lady that came back. 00:29:23.66\00:29:26.19 And she said, "Can I please work a little longer. 00:29:26.23\00:29:29.93 I want a house with a cement floor." 00:29:29.96\00:29:33.07 And so she worked an extra week for two bags of cement. 00:29:33.10\00:29:37.21 And she mixed the cement with some mud 00:29:37.24\00:29:39.34 and she's the only lady in that community today 00:29:39.37\00:29:41.94 that has a concrete floor. 00:29:41.98\00:29:45.21 You know, she has such a desire and a hunger for truth. 00:29:45.25\00:29:51.85 She no longer wears the hair covering 00:29:52.82\00:29:57.49 and she has found her faith, a new faith. 00:29:57.53\00:30:01.83 We need you. 00:30:01.86\00:30:04.20 There is a difference between needing and wanting 00:30:04.23\00:30:06.53 and I know you understand that. 00:30:06.57\00:30:08.30 So let me clarify, we need you, not we want you. 00:30:08.34\00:30:14.04 There is a difference. 00:30:14.08\00:30:17.25 We just came the other day, my wife and I, 00:30:17.28\00:30:20.05 to this beautiful part of the US from Thailand. 00:30:20.08\00:30:24.85 We were there with a group of 74 volunteers 00:30:24.89\00:30:27.96 that had given up their school holidays to come 00:30:27.99\00:30:30.13 and work among some of the poorest people 00:30:30.16\00:30:32.69 in that part of the world. 00:30:32.73\00:30:34.50 People from Burma that have fled ethnic cleansing 00:30:34.53\00:30:38.53 to come across to live in refugee camps, 00:30:38.57\00:30:41.54 to live in no man's land 00:30:41.57\00:30:43.71 or to sneak across the border into Thailand, 00:30:43.74\00:30:48.58 and we worked at a number of different sites. 00:30:48.61\00:30:50.65 But this is a place where we focus 00:30:50.68\00:30:52.61 some of the attention 00:30:52.65\00:30:54.42 and some of the finances that we have. 00:30:54.45\00:30:57.89 I'm going to read to you 00:30:57.92\00:30:59.25 because I don't want to say this wrong. 00:30:59.29\00:31:01.36 I'm going to read to you a letter 00:31:01.39\00:31:02.72 that I received from a girl in this area. 00:31:02.76\00:31:07.40 My name is Muttu, I'm just a young girl 00:31:07.43\00:31:10.30 who has come from Karen State in Burma. 00:31:10.33\00:31:13.23 I grew up in a small village along the Thai-Burma border, 00:31:13.27\00:31:16.30 where the Karen and the Burmese soldiers 00:31:16.34\00:31:18.01 always fight. 00:31:18.04\00:31:19.41 My parents are just poor farmers, 00:31:19.44\00:31:22.21 like me, they want to live in peace too. 00:31:22.24\00:31:25.55 For many years, whenever there was a battle, 00:31:25.58\00:31:27.18 they escaped together to a safe place. 00:31:27.22\00:31:29.98 After I was born, their escape became slow 00:31:30.02\00:31:31.95 as they had to carry me with them. 00:31:31.99\00:31:33.62 It was very difficult. 00:31:33.66\00:31:35.32 They had to hide themselves from Burmese soldiers, 00:31:35.36\00:31:38.06 many times was going without food, 00:31:38.09\00:31:40.60 nothing to eat for days. 00:31:40.63\00:31:42.80 It was a great risk for me and for them as well. 00:31:42.83\00:31:46.13 They knew that I would be shot or killed. 00:31:46.17\00:31:48.50 There were bombs, there were mortars, 00:31:48.54\00:31:50.17 and there were shells from the soldiers. 00:31:50.21\00:31:53.61 Because I am a girl, my parents were very concerned 00:31:53.64\00:31:56.98 about my safety. 00:31:57.01\00:31:58.61 I remember one night 00:31:58.65\00:31:59.98 that we had escaped from the soldiers, 00:32:00.02\00:32:01.35 we were hiding in the jungle, 00:32:01.38\00:32:02.72 my parents just hugged me and cried. 00:32:02.75\00:32:05.39 They talked about their concern for me. 00:32:05.42\00:32:06.96 They thought I was asleep. So I heard all that they said. 00:32:06.99\00:32:10.99 They said they have to find a safe place for me. 00:32:11.03\00:32:15.26 A place where there was no soldiers. 00:32:15.30\00:32:18.07 They took our animals, they stole our crops, 00:32:18.10\00:32:19.93 they raped and killed my friends. 00:32:19.97\00:32:21.47 All I wanted to do was go to school 00:32:21.50\00:32:22.97 and live in peace. 00:32:23.00\00:32:27.01 Muttu is like many thousands of girls and boys in this area 00:32:27.04\00:32:32.58 that live and struggle. 00:32:32.61\00:32:35.25 Muttu is a young girl. 00:32:35.28\00:32:37.59 Muttu has had to live through things that no child 00:32:37.62\00:32:40.96 should ever have to live. 00:32:40.99\00:32:43.16 The pain and expression of her face 00:32:43.19\00:32:46.76 is representative of the life and the narrow choices 00:32:46.80\00:32:50.50 that her family were forced into. 00:32:50.53\00:32:55.07 Look what the wise man said. 00:32:55.10\00:32:57.11 "Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves 00:32:57.14\00:33:01.01 for the rights of all who are destitute. 00:33:01.04\00:33:02.64 Speak up and judge fairly. 00:33:02.68\00:33:04.01 Defend the rights of the poor." 00:33:04.05\00:33:05.71 So I'm not appealing to you, 00:33:05.75\00:33:08.08 I'm not going to appeal to you 00:33:08.12\00:33:13.46 to suddenly jump up and speak up for these people. 00:33:13.49\00:33:17.26 But I want to say solemnly and declare to you 00:33:17.29\00:33:21.13 that if you leave this place and speak up, 00:33:21.16\00:33:26.40 God will be with you and bless you as you do. 00:33:26.43\00:33:29.50 There are thousands of people that you can speak up for. 00:33:29.54\00:33:34.98 We need a new William Wilberforce. 00:33:35.01\00:33:39.11 We need someone. 00:33:39.15\00:33:40.62 Are we or are we not the church of God. 00:33:40.65\00:33:43.92 Are we? Yes. Amen. 00:33:43.95\00:33:46.76 We are. 00:33:46.79\00:33:49.16 Then as a church of God, 00:33:49.19\00:33:50.53 we can do something for these people 00:33:50.56\00:33:52.66 because the scripture tells us, speak up. 00:33:52.69\00:33:55.63 Will we speak up? 00:33:55.66\00:33:58.53 This boy came, you can see, he is in pretty bad shape. 00:33:58.57\00:34:02.30 Look at this. 00:34:05.94\00:34:07.28 Ellen White has to say, "Orphans may be ragged." 00:34:07.31\00:34:09.78 Actually, before I say this, 00:34:09.81\00:34:11.15 I want to tell you something else. 00:34:11.18\00:34:13.42 Where I come from, she is not so popular. 00:34:13.45\00:34:17.49 But where I come from, she is very popular. 00:34:17.52\00:34:19.92 Amen. 00:34:19.95\00:34:21.36 "Orphans may be ragged, uncouth, 00:34:21.39\00:34:22.76 and seemingly in every way unattractive, 00:34:22.79\00:34:24.76 but they are bought with a price 00:34:24.79\00:34:26.70 and are just as precious in the sight of God 00:34:26.73\00:34:28.53 as our own little ones. 00:34:28.56\00:34:30.20 They are God's property for whom 00:34:30.23\00:34:31.57 Christians' are responsible." 00:34:31.60\00:34:32.93 Put your hand up if you are a Christian. 00:34:32.97\00:34:35.60 Then you are responsible. 00:34:35.64\00:34:38.04 Put it down if you don't want to be responsible. 00:34:38.07\00:34:41.88 Thank you. 00:34:41.91\00:34:43.24 I'm just checking who is listening. 00:34:44.25\00:34:47.68 These are God's, our responsibility. 00:34:47.72\00:34:52.35 Six weeks later, the same boy, six weeks, 00:34:52.39\00:34:57.89 transforming lives, restoring dignity, 00:34:57.93\00:35:01.10 bringing hope, and bringing Jesus Christ 00:35:01.13\00:35:03.70 into their lives in a very physical way initially, 00:35:03.73\00:35:07.10 and in a personal way introducing them 00:35:07.14\00:35:09.67 to a Father that will never let them down. 00:35:09.70\00:35:14.74 There are children there today that live behind barbwire. 00:35:14.78\00:35:18.25 I can assure you, I was there the other day, 00:35:18.28\00:35:19.91 they're still there. 00:35:19.95\00:35:21.28 Two hundred and twenty thousand people in refugee camps, 00:35:21.32\00:35:23.72 nine camps along the border, 00:35:23.75\00:35:25.32 still living behind barbwire today, 00:35:25.35\00:35:29.29 still washing like this, still queuing up 00:35:29.32\00:35:32.89 to get their water like this. 00:35:32.93\00:35:34.83 No turn on the nice tap and out comes 00:35:34.86\00:35:36.93 the hot water from the faucet. 00:35:36.97\00:35:39.70 You just go there and join the queue. 00:35:39.73\00:35:41.60 Let me tell you about some of the work we do 00:35:45.07\00:35:46.41 in the schools in this area. 00:35:46.44\00:35:48.34 This is the most modern device from Apple. 00:35:48.38\00:35:52.38 It is the new stone tablet. 00:35:52.41\00:35:54.15 And they don't use a stylus pen, 00:35:58.19\00:36:00.22 they use a rock pencil. 00:36:00.26\00:36:01.89 This is innovation from Burma. 00:36:01.92\00:36:06.13 But this is it. 00:36:06.16\00:36:08.16 They have nothing. 00:36:08.20\00:36:10.13 My friend in pink, Kuty, has devoted her life 00:36:10.17\00:36:15.84 to serving the poorest people on earth at incredible risk. 00:36:15.87\00:36:19.57 Her brother was caught, tortured, and murdered 00:36:19.61\00:36:21.81 by the soldiers on the other side 00:36:21.84\00:36:23.31 because he desired to share Jesus Christ in a community 00:36:23.35\00:36:26.48 where it was dangerous. 00:36:26.51\00:36:28.68 And for that, they took his life. 00:36:28.72\00:36:31.25 These children are amongst 00:36:31.29\00:36:32.62 the poorest children in the world. 00:36:32.65\00:36:35.99 They will walk 10 days to any health services. 00:36:36.02\00:36:40.80 There is no vaccination program in their community, 00:36:40.83\00:36:44.13 but there are land mines to remind them 00:36:44.17\00:36:46.43 of the fragility of their life. 00:36:46.47\00:36:49.87 This is one of their small schools 00:36:49.90\00:36:52.31 that we are supporting with Adventist teachers 00:36:52.34\00:36:54.94 so they can hear a wonderful message 00:36:54.98\00:36:57.08 of hope in a place of hopelessness. 00:36:57.11\00:37:01.98 This young girl, 12 years old 00:37:02.02\00:37:03.39 who should be in school is carrying a 25 liter... 00:37:03.42\00:37:07.29 I don't know how many gallons that is, 00:37:07.32\00:37:08.66 divide it by 4 and a bit, 25 kilograms 00:37:08.69\00:37:12.86 of water on a head strap, 00:37:12.89\00:37:14.80 up in an embankment, out of a river. 00:37:14.83\00:37:16.46 She doesn't go to school. She is a water carrier. 00:37:16.50\00:37:19.20 Will we speak up for the rights of this girl 00:37:19.23\00:37:21.87 as we are called to in scripture? 00:37:21.90\00:37:25.57 In my country, in the back page of the newspaper 00:37:25.61\00:37:28.01 is always the sport. 00:37:28.04\00:37:29.91 And they use words like hero if someone can kick a ball 00:37:29.94\00:37:32.78 from here to the end of the stage there, you know. 00:37:32.81\00:37:35.52 These are my heroes. 00:37:35.55\00:37:37.29 These are the people that sacrifice their life 00:37:37.32\00:37:39.95 at incredible risk to work in communities 00:37:39.99\00:37:42.52 where there is such poverty. 00:37:42.56\00:37:45.09 But there is a certain richness that they see 00:37:45.13\00:37:48.10 because they see a rich and fertile land 00:37:48.13\00:37:50.63 for the gospel seed to grow into life. 00:37:50.67\00:37:53.97 And they work in these places 00:37:54.00\00:37:55.90 because they see that Buddhism has lost its appeal. 00:37:55.94\00:37:59.54 It is failing people 00:37:59.57\00:38:01.24 and Christianity gives them something to hope. 00:38:01.28\00:38:03.95 And this young girl came to me one day, 00:38:03.98\00:38:05.48 her name is Perry. 00:38:05.51\00:38:06.85 And Perry said, "Dave, please, I need you to support." 00:38:06.88\00:38:11.55 She was going through college. 00:38:11.59\00:38:15.02 Her father had died. 00:38:15.06\00:38:16.73 His dying wish was finish your studies 00:38:16.76\00:38:19.56 and go back to the community where you came from 00:38:19.59\00:38:23.00 where we are and bring Jesus back with you. 00:38:23.03\00:38:26.07 And so she went and she was just 00:38:26.10\00:38:28.20 a year and a half away from finishing college 00:38:28.24\00:38:30.17 when her father died and she has got her scholarship 00:38:30.21\00:38:35.31 and she will go back to share Christ in this community. 00:38:35.34\00:38:39.11 She and others like her, 00:38:39.15\00:38:41.82 they will forego the opportunity 00:38:41.85\00:38:43.62 to come to a wealthy nation where they'll earn big money, 00:38:43.65\00:38:47.36 and for 30 dollars a month, they will work 00:38:47.39\00:38:49.39 in some other most remote desolate areas in danger 00:38:49.42\00:38:53.50 because they believe strongly 00:38:53.53\00:38:55.06 in the cause that we are here for, 00:38:55.10\00:38:56.80 the great commission in the gospel 00:38:56.83\00:38:58.50 because they want to see it being spread 00:38:58.53\00:39:00.34 amongst those of the poorest nations on earth. 00:39:00.37\00:39:03.91 30 dollars a month will be her salary. 00:39:03.94\00:39:07.01 How many earn that in an hour. 00:39:07.04\00:39:09.91 Well, you can afford to sponsor people like that. 00:39:09.94\00:39:11.65 You come and see me later. 00:39:11.68\00:39:13.21 Chained and alone. 00:39:15.48\00:39:18.29 I want to talk about something that's very serious. 00:39:20.52\00:39:25.43 I started by telling you how many numbers of children. 00:39:25.46\00:39:28.53 Just to put that in perspective, 00:39:28.56\00:39:30.47 that's 3,300 more children each day 00:39:30.50\00:39:37.44 that are trafficked against their will. 00:39:37.47\00:39:44.25 In my country and yours, you can buy 00:39:44.28\00:39:47.52 for between $25 and $75 a line, a packet, 00:39:47.55\00:39:52.15 whatever you call it, a speed, coke, ice, 00:39:52.19\00:39:54.79 you call it what you want, we call it what we want. 00:39:54.82\00:39:57.53 They all have their colloquial names anyway. 00:39:57.56\00:39:59.89 Depending on the purity 00:39:59.93\00:40:01.26 and depending on the availability $20-$75. 00:40:01.30\00:40:04.80 You can buy a gun in Africa between $1 and $15 00:40:04.83\00:40:07.54 and ammunition so plentiful, 00:40:07.57\00:40:08.90 they'll give it to you for free. 00:40:08.94\00:40:10.94 But you can sell a girl every day, 00:40:10.97\00:40:16.75 20 times a day, every week, every month, every year, 00:40:16.78\00:40:21.18 and the average girl in Asia that's chained and behind bars 00:40:21.22\00:40:24.12 and is being forced to work as prostitute 00:40:24.15\00:40:26.12 from the age of four and nine and twelve and sixteen 00:40:26.15\00:40:29.42 is 78,000 dollars a year. 00:40:29.46\00:40:32.59 And when we run a rescue program 00:40:32.63\00:40:34.30 that frees twelve or thirteen girls, 00:40:34.33\00:40:36.67 we've just cost someone a million dollars 00:40:36.70\00:40:39.10 that keeps those girls. 00:40:39.13\00:40:40.87 And that's why there is some danger 00:40:40.90\00:40:42.80 in the work that we do. 00:40:42.84\00:40:45.74 Just two years ago, we lost two staff. 00:40:45.77\00:40:48.14 They were shot and killed 00:40:48.18\00:40:49.51 because we are able to rescue someone. 00:40:49.54\00:40:52.48 Let's see what Romans has to say 00:40:52.51\00:40:54.82 before I prepare for the next part of this talk. 00:40:54.85\00:40:57.79 "Love your neighbors as yourself." 00:40:57.82\00:40:59.35 Are you loving? 00:40:59.39\00:41:00.96 Are you loving the man that stands outside the Sheraton 00:41:00.99\00:41:03.19 that says "Happy New Year"? 00:41:03.22\00:41:06.39 If you love others, you will never do them wrong, 00:41:06.43\00:41:09.80 "to love, then, is to obey the whole law." 00:41:09.83\00:41:13.13 You must do this because you know that 00:41:13.17\00:41:15.00 the time has come for you to wake from your sleep. 00:41:15.04\00:41:19.37 You're not sleeping out here, are you, after lunch? 00:41:19.41\00:41:23.41 I hope you only had lettuce, nothing stodgy. 00:41:23.45\00:41:27.12 "For the moment when we will be saved is closer now than 00:41:27.15\00:41:29.58 when we first believed, the night is nearly over, 00:41:29.62\00:41:32.75 day is almost here." 00:41:32.79\00:41:35.66 "The night is nearly over and day is almost here," 00:41:35.69\00:41:38.49 was written two millennia ago. 00:41:38.53\00:41:41.76 How much closer now than 00:41:41.80\00:41:43.73 when Paul wrote this to the Romans. 00:41:43.77\00:41:47.24 I work in places where tribes 00:41:47.27\00:41:49.94 have yet to hear of Jesus Christ. 00:41:49.97\00:41:52.57 But I can assure you 00:41:52.61\00:41:54.38 that the human traffickers are already there. 00:41:54.41\00:41:58.28 What's going first? 00:41:58.31\00:42:01.38 The people who will pimp and prostitute the girls 00:42:01.42\00:42:03.65 or the gospel of Jesus Christ, dare I say. 00:42:03.69\00:42:08.56 You know the answer. 00:42:08.59\00:42:10.53 "Let us stop doing the things that belonged to the dark. 00:42:10.56\00:42:13.23 Let us take our weapons for fighting in the light. 00:42:13.26\00:42:15.83 Let us conduct ourselves properly as people 00:42:15.86\00:42:17.83 who live in the light of the day, 00:42:17.87\00:42:20.47 no orgies or drunkenness, no fighting or jealousy 00:42:20.50\00:42:24.57 but take up the weapons of the Lord." 00:42:24.61\00:42:27.34 I'm just going to back there. 00:42:27.38\00:42:29.08 Let us live like people 00:42:29.11\00:42:30.45 who live in the light of the day. 00:42:30.48\00:42:32.78 I want to address that subject, not theologically. 00:42:32.81\00:42:37.49 I'm not very good at theology. 00:42:37.52\00:42:41.02 There are a number of mitigating factors 00:42:41.06\00:42:44.59 that keep children enslaved. 00:42:44.63\00:42:48.66 One of them is pornography. 00:42:48.70\00:42:50.67 Pornography is keeping girls chained. 00:42:52.97\00:42:58.74 In my country, I'm sure the law 00:42:58.77\00:43:01.34 is very similar to your country. 00:43:01.38\00:43:03.71 If I see a crime being perpetrated 00:43:03.75\00:43:06.92 and if I'm walking along the street here 00:43:06.95\00:43:08.38 and I see a girl being raped in the park 00:43:08.42\00:43:10.09 and do nothing about it, I don't know what your law says 00:43:10.12\00:43:12.55 but in my country, 00:43:12.59\00:43:14.36 I'm in trouble because I kept quiet. 00:43:14.39\00:43:18.99 But to view, online or in magazine form, 00:43:19.03\00:43:24.53 content that continues the brutalization and torture, 00:43:24.57\00:43:30.37 degradation of life, 00:43:30.41\00:43:32.07 and the ultimate death of a child 00:43:32.11\00:43:34.84 who becomes a women, who smiles on cue 00:43:34.88\00:43:37.45 because she knows what will happen if she doesn't, 00:43:37.48\00:43:39.68 because she has faced the pain of torture before, 00:43:39.71\00:43:43.49 and as one after another, after another 00:43:43.52\00:43:47.52 drop off and die, this is voyeuristic murder. 00:43:47.56\00:43:52.39 It's not pornography. 00:43:52.43\00:43:54.00 God sees, we don't need to. 00:43:54.03\00:43:58.80 Let us live like it's the light of the day. 00:43:58.83\00:44:03.51 "No orgies or drunkenness, no immorality or indecency, 00:44:03.54\00:44:06.14 no fighting or jealousy but take up the weapons 00:44:06.17\00:44:08.64 of the Lord Jesus Christ 00:44:08.68\00:44:10.35 and stop paying attention to your sinful nature 00:44:10.38\00:44:12.78 and satisfying its desires." 00:44:12.81\00:44:16.79 A clear holy calling, a clear message from Isaiah, 00:44:16.82\00:44:23.43 a clear message from Solomon, 00:44:23.46\00:44:26.76 speak up, fight, defend, 00:44:26.80\00:44:32.40 learn to do good, was that first Bible verse. 00:44:32.43\00:44:35.50 Who is still learning? 00:44:35.54\00:44:37.64 I'm glad there are more honest people. 00:44:37.67\00:44:39.01 And... This young girl. 00:44:39.04\00:44:44.18 It is not the place to tell you what happened to her, 00:44:44.21\00:44:45.95 but I can assure you this, in the couple of years 00:44:45.98\00:44:49.42 that she has been in our care, 00:44:49.45\00:44:50.95 she learnt something fundamental, 00:44:50.99\00:44:54.32 forgiveness. 00:44:54.36\00:44:57.39 She learnt to forgive the man that abused her, 00:44:57.43\00:45:01.33 that enslaved her, and it brought her freedom. 00:45:01.36\00:45:05.37 Programs like this help in the cause of emancipation 00:45:05.40\00:45:10.84 to really bring freedom. 00:45:10.87\00:45:14.94 Children are not for sale. 00:45:14.98\00:45:16.58 I'm going to read this verse and I'm just going to ask 00:45:19.98\00:45:22.68 while I'm reading it, if my wife comes out 00:45:22.72\00:45:24.32 because she is going to share something with you. 00:45:24.35\00:45:26.15 "The greatest want of the world is the want of men. 00:45:26.19\00:45:29.16 Men, who will not be bought and sold." 00:45:29.19\00:45:30.93 You know this verse? You know this passage? 00:45:30.96\00:45:33.46 Mark it down. 00:45:36.26\00:45:37.97 "Men who will not be bought or sold, 00:45:38.00\00:45:39.47 men who in their inmost souls are true and honest, 00:45:39.50\00:45:42.50 men who do not fear to call sin by its right name, 00:45:42.54\00:45:45.91 men whose conscience is as true to duty 00:45:45.94\00:45:48.38 as the needle to the pole, men who will stand 00:45:48.41\00:45:51.41 for the right though the heavens fall." 00:45:51.45\00:45:56.28 Is there a good man out there? 00:45:56.32\00:46:00.19 Only one. 00:46:00.22\00:46:02.29 Is there a good man out there? 00:46:07.23\00:46:08.93 Amen. 00:46:08.96\00:46:11.40 Because we need them. 00:46:11.43\00:46:14.30 We don't want them, we need them. 00:46:14.34\00:46:17.91 Men, I am appealing to you. 00:46:17.94\00:46:21.61 You set your moral compass straight 00:46:21.64\00:46:24.21 and you stand up for the rights, 00:46:24.25\00:46:26.72 as a father, as a male, 00:46:26.75\00:46:30.85 as a head of a spiritual family, 00:46:30.89\00:46:33.32 you stand up for the rights of the poor. 00:46:33.36\00:46:37.23 That is a gospel appeal. 00:46:37.26\00:46:39.49 If my wife can just come out 00:46:41.66\00:46:43.06 and she's going to share a testimony with us. 00:46:43.10\00:46:46.33 We have a program in the Philippines, Blessed Home. 00:46:46.37\00:46:50.74 It's where we care for many of these victims 00:46:50.77\00:46:53.88 of sexual abuse and violence. 00:46:53.91\00:46:56.68 And it's a difficult task. 00:46:58.48\00:47:03.49 I'm going to let my wife introduce herself. 00:47:03.52\00:47:05.69 Come on up here, Esther. They're not so scary. 00:47:05.72\00:47:08.12 It's all right. 00:47:08.16\00:47:09.72 They've eaten lunch already, they won't eat you. 00:47:09.76\00:47:12.23 My name is Esther. 00:47:15.26\00:47:17.83 When I was 19, I was trafficked 00:47:17.87\00:47:21.70 and forced into prostitution. 00:47:21.74\00:47:27.04 I was forced by some of the contraband 00:47:27.08\00:47:29.18 from the Philippines to Japan. 00:47:29.21\00:47:33.62 Upon arrival, I was taken into a secret place 00:47:33.65\00:47:37.39 by the Japanese mafia known as the Yakuza. 00:47:37.42\00:47:41.62 How did this happen? 00:47:43.06\00:47:47.46 As a child, I grew up in slum area. 00:47:47.50\00:47:50.67 We had no proper kitchen, we cook on fire. 00:47:50.70\00:47:54.30 We had no proper toilet. 00:47:54.34\00:47:56.84 The whole neighborhood shares one toilet. 00:47:56.87\00:48:00.08 We had no running water. 00:48:00.11\00:48:01.64 We had to fetch water from afar. 00:48:01.68\00:48:04.85 We were always hungry. 00:48:04.88\00:48:08.08 One night, there was nothing to eat, 00:48:08.12\00:48:11.89 and I was starving and I couldn't go to sleep. 00:48:11.92\00:48:15.52 So I had to chew some cardboard. 00:48:15.56\00:48:18.46 It was really tough. 00:48:18.49\00:48:20.36 My parents worshipped the spirits. 00:48:22.76\00:48:26.37 And one day my dad became Christian 00:48:26.40\00:48:29.57 and since then, 00:48:29.60\00:48:31.07 they fought a lot about religion. 00:48:31.11\00:48:35.04 It got so bad that they had to split up. 00:48:35.08\00:48:38.85 So my siblings and I were taken into rural area 00:48:38.88\00:48:43.15 to live in a small thatch hut all by ourselves. 00:48:43.18\00:48:47.96 I am the eldest and I had five other younger siblings. 00:48:50.46\00:48:55.93 I was only twelve and our youngest was only two. 00:48:55.96\00:48:59.77 Just imagine, looking after young children 00:48:59.80\00:49:03.27 when I was only a kid myself. 00:49:03.30\00:49:06.61 My mom was not allowed to visit us 00:49:06.64\00:49:09.78 and our dad only checked us on the weekends. 00:49:09.81\00:49:13.48 During this time, my very own dad abused me. 00:49:13.52\00:49:20.16 I was too scared to talk to anyone 00:49:20.96\00:49:23.79 because he used to beat us up. 00:49:23.83\00:49:27.03 Our situation became worse when my dad lost his job 00:49:27.06\00:49:33.20 and we were forced to be put into different places 00:49:33.23\00:49:37.47 away from each other, 00:49:37.51\00:49:40.71 forced to work in return for food and shelter. 00:49:40.74\00:49:45.21 When I was 18, I was recruited to work as a maid in Manila. 00:49:48.32\00:49:54.59 When I was exploited for few months without any pay, 00:49:57.33\00:50:02.46 which left me homeless with no money, 00:50:02.50\00:50:06.40 I felt so vulnerable just like so many other girls, 00:50:06.43\00:50:13.04 who are far away from home with no money, 00:50:13.07\00:50:18.35 forced with narrow choices just like what I did. 00:50:18.38\00:50:25.05 I took the risk to apply for a job 00:50:25.09\00:50:30.06 as a singer in Japan only to find out 00:50:30.09\00:50:34.46 that they were trapped in prostitution. 00:50:34.50\00:50:38.03 Fortunately, for me, 00:50:38.07\00:50:39.87 I was able to escape the Yakuza. 00:50:39.90\00:50:42.97 But with no money and no passport, 00:50:43.00\00:50:46.78 I was eventually caught, detained, put in a cell, 00:50:46.81\00:50:53.15 and deported back to the Philippines. 00:50:53.18\00:50:56.52 But God is good. 00:50:56.55\00:50:59.39 Amazing circumstances happened in my life 00:50:59.42\00:51:03.02 that brought me to Australia to start a new life. 00:51:03.06\00:51:08.13 I was able to finish my studies and I became an accountant. 00:51:08.16\00:51:13.67 I had my own business and looked after my clients 00:51:13.70\00:51:17.61 with their financial affairs. 00:51:17.64\00:51:20.68 And one day, I had a client, I used to go their home office 00:51:20.71\00:51:26.05 and I noticed, wow, they have a loving family. 00:51:26.08\00:51:29.95 And then I found out that they were Christians. 00:51:29.98\00:51:33.25 As we did Bible studies, I found out that 00:51:33.29\00:51:37.23 they go to church on a Saturday. 00:51:37.26\00:51:40.16 That was just so weird. 00:51:40.20\00:51:43.20 But in 2010, I was baptized in Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:51:43.23\00:51:49.34 in Salisbury, Brisbane, Australia. 00:51:49.37\00:51:55.44 Same year, I went to the Philippines, 00:51:55.48\00:51:58.05 we had a family reunion. 00:51:58.08\00:52:00.52 And I spoke to my dad, And I said "Dad... 00:52:00.55\00:52:04.95 What Jesus did for me at the cross. 00:52:09.66\00:52:12.66 I forgive you." 00:52:12.69\00:52:16.00 It was very, very difficult for me to do that 00:52:16.03\00:52:18.43 without Gods help. 00:52:18.47\00:52:22.97 And so I dedicated my life 00:52:23.00\00:52:29.04 and do His work, help this ministry, 00:52:29.08\00:52:35.38 and joined my husband to help the poor children, 00:52:35.42\00:52:38.69 the destitute children. 00:52:38.72\00:52:41.39 So my question is, 00:52:41.42\00:52:45.59 being a Christian, what would you do? 00:52:45.63\00:52:49.13 It's about time to put your faith into action. 00:52:49.16\00:52:54.04 Thank you. 00:52:57.77\00:52:59.67 The lady in yellow on the screen, 00:53:02.54\00:53:05.48 she is coming, I've seen down here. 00:53:05.51\00:53:07.85 If we can just have that. There we go. 00:53:07.88\00:53:09.92 Her name is Psalm. 00:53:09.95\00:53:12.25 Psalm came to one of our medical programs, 00:53:12.29\00:53:15.59 she wasn't sick and neither were her children. 00:53:15.62\00:53:19.26 But she had a bigger problem. 00:53:19.29\00:53:22.23 Psalm, that night, was to be trafficked 00:53:22.26\00:53:26.27 to work in Malaysia as a prostitute. 00:53:26.30\00:53:30.14 And she came to see if we could take her children. 00:53:30.17\00:53:34.48 How the story unfolded? Let me back up. 00:53:34.51\00:53:37.91 When Psalm was this pregnant 00:53:37.95\00:53:41.58 with a little fellow just there in front of her, 00:53:41.62\00:53:45.45 her then drunken husband taken a big bladed machete 00:53:45.49\00:53:49.12 and decided that he was going to terminate the pregnancy 00:53:49.16\00:53:52.16 right there right then with once swipe to her abdomen. 00:53:52.19\00:53:56.70 She put her hand to protect the unborn child 00:53:56.73\00:53:59.23 and took the force of that blade across her arm, 00:53:59.27\00:54:02.10 leaving her in need of surgery and hospitalization. 00:54:02.14\00:54:07.24 She had no money, useless husband ran off, 00:54:07.28\00:54:13.75 and she was left alone. 00:54:13.78\00:54:18.42 She borrowed $50 at 30 percent interest per month. 00:54:18.45\00:54:24.86 She is illiterate, never been to school, 00:54:24.89\00:54:28.13 couldn't even write her name, agreed to the terms 00:54:28.16\00:54:31.50 and conditions of a loan 00:54:31.53\00:54:33.20 that she had no idea of its ramifications. 00:54:33.23\00:54:36.07 And within a short period of time, unable to work 00:54:36.10\00:54:39.24 because of the loss of murdering of the arm, 00:54:39.27\00:54:41.61 she found herself with a debt close to $500. 00:54:41.64\00:54:46.72 She had a young baby and no one 00:54:49.18\00:54:53.59 and her other kids to look after. 00:54:53.62\00:54:57.73 And so the one who took advantage of her 00:54:57.76\00:55:03.23 and gave her the loan with the same person 00:55:03.26\00:55:05.50 that had made her agree 00:55:05.53\00:55:09.24 that if she couldn't pay the loan, 00:55:09.27\00:55:12.54 the children will become his property to exploit. 00:55:12.57\00:55:16.64 She had begged him, "Take me, not the children." 00:55:16.68\00:55:20.58 And that had brought her to our medical clinic 00:55:20.62\00:55:24.15 in the suburbs 00:55:24.19\00:55:25.72 or the urban slums of Phnom Penh, Cambodia 00:55:25.75\00:55:28.92 because that night, 00:55:28.96\00:55:30.33 she was leaving on a plane to Malaysia 00:55:30.36\00:55:34.20 to work as a prostitute to pay back that debt. 00:55:34.23\00:55:38.43 Reality was that she was never going to come back. 00:55:38.47\00:55:41.20 She would never clear the debt and she would die there. 00:55:41.24\00:55:44.74 And we would have her children. 00:55:44.77\00:55:46.91 There was a volunteer team from Australia 00:55:46.94\00:55:50.05 and there was a gentleman in that team 00:55:50.08\00:55:52.31 and he had heard the story as it was interpreted 00:55:52.35\00:55:55.75 and he pulled out his wallet and he counted his money. 00:55:55.78\00:56:01.62 I don't imagine what it was that he was there 00:56:01.66\00:56:03.66 to buy at the end of this trip the next day, 00:56:03.69\00:56:05.66 maybe he's gonna buy himself a pair of jeans 00:56:05.69\00:56:07.53 and a cheap DVD, you know, they built like a mall 00:56:07.56\00:56:09.90 over there for pretty cheap. 00:56:09.93\00:56:12.30 But he brought her freedom that night for $900. 00:56:12.33\00:56:17.71 Good story, but it doesn't end there, 00:56:17.74\00:56:22.54 $900 and she was free. 00:56:22.58\00:56:26.75 It seems to me that 00:56:26.78\00:56:30.92 this is a very practical demonstration 00:56:30.95\00:56:32.82 of what was done on the cross. 00:56:32.85\00:56:36.26 Freedom, the story doesn't end there 00:56:36.29\00:56:39.09 because, you see, we needed someone. 00:56:39.13\00:56:41.70 We needed a staff member and quickly, 00:56:41.73\00:56:44.67 we had just received 30 children 00:56:44.70\00:56:47.14 that we needed to care for, 00:56:47.17\00:56:49.60 they had been victims of extreme poverty. 00:56:49.64\00:56:52.84 Here was a women that had such tenacity 00:56:52.87\00:56:54.88 to help her children 00:56:54.91\00:56:56.24 that had gone to extreme majors to try 00:56:56.28\00:56:58.05 and make sure her children were cared for. 00:56:58.08\00:57:00.18 What a moral compass 00:57:00.22\00:57:01.55 she had set in the right direction 00:57:01.58\00:57:03.28 and we took her to work with us and we took her children. 00:57:03.32\00:57:07.52 And she got a small loan from us 00:57:07.56\00:57:10.39 that was not with interest. 00:57:10.43\00:57:13.19 And she started a small tuck shop, 00:57:13.23\00:57:15.76 making and creating and selling and making 00:57:15.80\00:57:18.33 some profit to pay back her loan. 00:57:18.37\00:57:20.57 And at the same time, she worked part time 00:57:20.60\00:57:23.34 caring for some other children that we were looking after. 00:57:23.37\00:57:26.91 Six weeks later, she asked this question, 00:57:26.94\00:57:31.48 a question that it's possible that some of you may have 00:57:31.51\00:57:35.22 never asked before in this context. 00:57:35.25\00:57:39.69 What must I do to be saved? 00:57:39.72\00:57:42.32 What must I do to be saved? 00:57:44.79\00:57:48.86 She's gone back to her community, 00:57:48.90\00:57:51.13 she's gone back to share Jesus' love. 00:57:51.17\00:57:56.40 What will you do? 00:57:56.44\00:57:58.71 I'm just finishing up, guys. 00:57:58.74\00:58:01.64 What would Jesus do? 00:58:01.68\00:58:03.98 What will you do? 00:58:04.01\00:58:05.48 Well, here's a few things you do. 00:58:05.51\00:58:06.85 You can join a volunteer team, you can join our mailing list, 00:58:06.88\00:58:09.85 you can like us on Facebook, you can rescue a child, 00:58:09.88\00:58:12.25 you can donate or you can come tonight 00:58:12.29\00:58:14.49 to booth 201 over there, 00:58:14.52\00:58:16.02 just go through the first door and turn right in the expo hall 00:58:16.06\00:58:18.79 and you'll find us, booth 201 and come and talk to us. 00:58:18.83\00:58:23.23 On our website, there's a little button. 00:58:23.26\00:58:24.93 It's there.
