Good morning GYC. 00:05:36.97\00:05:38.80 Morning! 00:05:38.83\00:05:40.17 There we go, I know it's early, but you guys are here 7:45, 00:05:40.20\00:05:42.97 the few and faithful to morning devotional. 00:05:43.00\00:05:45.71 And I want you to do me a favor, 00:05:45.74\00:05:47.31 how many of you have a friend here at GYC 00:05:47.34\00:05:49.74 who is not in this auditorium this morning. 00:05:49.78\00:05:52.25 Yes, a lot of you guys, all right. 00:05:52.28\00:05:54.22 Your goal is sometime today to tell them, 00:05:54.25\00:05:57.42 you need to be here tomorrow morning at 7:45. 00:05:57.45\00:06:01.02 And the reason why is this is 00:06:01.06\00:06:02.39 because we have the opportunity 00:06:02.42\00:06:03.76 to listen to a powerful speaker. 00:06:03.79\00:06:05.23 Each morning Adam Ramdin has come all the way 00:06:05.26\00:06:07.73 from England to be with us. 00:06:07.76\00:06:09.36 He is the director of the Peace Bible College. 00:06:09.40\00:06:12.97 In addition to that, he is the youth director 00:06:13.00\00:06:15.57 for that conference. 00:06:15.60\00:06:16.94 And we're really excited about been him, 00:06:16.97\00:06:18.41 being here, he is a powerful speaker, 00:06:18.44\00:06:20.08 he's gonna speak from God's word. 00:06:20.11\00:06:21.48 And I know, I've been blessed by Adam, 00:06:21.51\00:06:24.15 and so we want to go ahead and bow our heads 00:06:24.18\00:06:26.51 and ask God to be with us and bless this time. 00:06:26.55\00:06:29.48 Let's pray. 00:06:29.52\00:06:31.22 Father, we want to thank You so much for this opportunity 00:06:31.25\00:06:38.73 to come and here the word of God, 00:06:38.76\00:06:41.76 and we pray that Your Holy Spirit 00:06:41.80\00:06:43.57 would be poured out this morning. 00:06:43.60\00:06:46.07 We have hearts that are open 00:06:46.10\00:06:49.14 and willing and wanting to hear Your word, 00:06:49.17\00:06:52.01 and I pray that you would speak through Adam. 00:06:52.04\00:06:54.31 We dedicate this time to you, we pray these things, 00:06:54.34\00:06:57.31 and all of God's people say it, amen, amen. 00:06:57.35\00:07:00.02 Good morning. Good morning! 00:13:17.66\00:13:20.40 And Happy New Year. 00:13:20.43\00:13:23.16 Apple Computers used to have a logo 00:13:35.04\00:13:39.88 around the end of the 1990s that said, 00:13:39.91\00:13:42.25 "Think Different," and it quotes on, 00:13:42.28\00:13:48.92 they struck a chord with society. 00:13:48.96\00:13:51.96 For we have a cultural affinity today 00:13:51.99\00:13:54.30 in the western world in particular 00:13:54.33\00:13:57.90 to value change over tradition. 00:13:57.93\00:14:01.60 So when they said think different, 00:14:01.64\00:14:03.27 it struck a chord with us. 00:14:03.30\00:14:06.27 We put merit in something that is new 00:14:06.31\00:14:09.91 as opposed to what is old. 00:14:09.94\00:14:12.35 And if when we're hearing something, 00:14:12.38\00:14:13.75 if we've heard it previously, 00:14:13.78\00:14:15.48 we consider it to be a waste of time 00:14:15.52\00:14:17.99 and meaningless. 00:14:18.02\00:14:20.46 Youth conferences in the Adventist church, 00:14:20.49\00:14:22.39 sometimes are affected by this mindset, 00:14:22.42\00:14:24.66 where committees will spend hours literally 00:14:24.69\00:14:28.00 thinking up a theme for the youth conference 00:14:28.03\00:14:31.47 that is new, that is different, 00:14:31.50\00:14:33.37 that is catchy, that is memorable, 00:14:33.40\00:14:36.04 because we value what's new over what's old. 00:14:36.07\00:14:43.04 I'd like to congratulate GYC 00:14:43.08\00:14:44.91 this year on a great theme, amen. 00:14:44.95\00:14:48.02 And I pray that myself 00:14:48.05\00:14:49.38 and either speakers here and in the workshop 00:14:49.42\00:14:51.22 are able to do justice to this theme. 00:14:51.25\00:14:53.62 You see, it is not a new thought, 00:14:53.66\00:14:56.22 it takes us back to the heart of Christianity 00:14:56.26\00:14:58.69 2,000 years ago, 00:14:58.73\00:15:00.80 the event that changed the universe 00:15:00.83\00:15:02.76 and the event for which history evolves at the cross. 00:15:02.80\00:15:08.24 You see, today as Laodiceans we have a problem as Laodicea, 00:15:08.27\00:15:12.07 the Adventist church is Laodicea, 00:15:12.11\00:15:13.44 we have a problem where 00:15:13.48\00:15:14.81 we have an endless pursuit of knowledge. 00:15:14.84\00:15:18.75 In fact, Laodicean doesn't necessarily need 00:15:18.78\00:15:20.92 more knowledge, 00:15:20.95\00:15:22.28 but they want more knowledge. 00:15:22.32\00:15:23.65 We want to know something new, 00:15:23.69\00:15:25.65 we want to know something fresh. 00:15:25.69\00:15:27.86 How many times have you been 00:15:27.89\00:15:29.22 in a prayer meeting or in a Bible study 00:15:29.26\00:15:31.39 and the person kneeling down, 00:15:31.43\00:15:32.79 he said, "Lord, teach us something new from Your word, 00:15:32.83\00:15:36.67 we want to hear something fresh, 00:15:36.70\00:15:38.87 something different, 00:15:38.90\00:15:40.24 something that we have not heard before. 00:15:40.27\00:15:42.84 The problem with us is Laodicea is we want knowledge. 00:15:42.87\00:15:46.37 Some of us have downloaded 10 gigabytes worth of sermons 00:15:46.41\00:15:49.64 on to our mobile phones. 00:15:49.68\00:15:51.65 Some of us have got our favorite sermons, 00:15:51.68\00:15:53.78 and we've heard them over and over so many times, 00:15:53.82\00:15:56.52 we can recite them word for word. 00:15:56.55\00:15:58.95 We want something fresh, we want something new. 00:15:58.99\00:16:02.66 I was talking to a young man in England one time, 00:16:02.69\00:16:04.69 he came to evangelistic campaign 00:16:04.73\00:16:06.06 that I was doing, 00:16:06.09\00:16:07.43 and he came all the way through, 00:16:07.46\00:16:08.80 did not get baptized. 00:16:08.83\00:16:10.17 Two years later, I met him at a youth event, 00:16:10.20\00:16:11.77 and I was talking to him about his walk with the Lord. 00:16:11.80\00:16:14.24 And he said, "Yeah, you know, things are going well," 00:16:14.27\00:16:16.81 and then he said something to me, 00:16:16.84\00:16:18.44 he told me the certain Bible prophecies 00:16:18.47\00:16:20.44 that he was studying. 00:16:20.48\00:16:22.71 And he said something to me, 00:16:22.74\00:16:24.08 he said, after he told me what he was studying, he said, 00:16:24.11\00:16:27.05 "Yeah, I'm at that level now, 00:16:27.08\00:16:32.35 that I'm studying these things, and I'm at that level now." 00:16:32.39\00:16:35.36 In other words, what he was saying was, 00:16:35.39\00:16:37.03 "I'm not dealing with the Psalms anymore, 00:16:37.06\00:16:39.06 I'm not dealing with the Proverbs anymore, 00:16:39.09\00:16:40.96 I've gone past the gospels, I'm at this level now." 00:16:41.00\00:16:45.37 You see, sometimes that's the way we think, 00:16:45.40\00:16:46.97 we got to graduate from the easy stuff 00:16:47.00\00:16:48.90 and gets to the deep stuff, 00:16:48.94\00:16:50.34 and then we really are immature Christian. 00:16:50.37\00:16:53.58 The problem with us as Adventist is 00:16:53.61\00:16:55.01 when we think about the gospel, 00:16:55.04\00:16:56.38 Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, all too often we say, 00:16:56.41\00:16:58.61 "Yeah, I've read that already," 00:16:58.65\00:17:00.85 the cross, "Yeah, I checked, 00:17:00.88\00:17:02.42 I've already heard a sermon on the cross. 00:17:02.45\00:17:05.25 I've read the last 10 chapters of Desire of Ages, 00:17:05.29\00:17:07.96 yes, I know that. 00:17:07.99\00:17:11.19 I know that, I've heard it before, 00:17:11.23\00:17:13.36 I've seen it already. 00:17:13.40\00:17:14.73 It's time for me to move on in my Christian experience." 00:17:14.76\00:17:18.10 Well, you see, this weekend, there is no moving on, amen. 00:17:18.13\00:17:24.34 In Matthew 13:52, the Bible says that, 00:17:24.37\00:17:28.04 "Every scribe that is instructed 00:17:28.08\00:17:31.15 in the kingdom of heaven 00:17:31.18\00:17:32.75 is like a man, that is a householder, 00:17:32.78\00:17:35.45 which brought forth from the treasure, 00:17:35.48\00:17:37.52 things new, and things that are old. 00:17:37.55\00:17:41.22 You see, this weekend, long weekend, 00:17:41.26\00:17:44.03 we are discussing an old theme, 00:17:44.06\00:17:46.59 but I pray for myself and for yourself 00:17:46.63\00:17:49.26 that we're able to pull new things 00:17:49.30\00:17:51.70 out of the old theme, amen. 00:17:51.73\00:17:54.34 That what is old will become new, 00:17:54.37\00:17:56.34 what is old may become fresh 00:17:56.37\00:17:58.27 and that though it maybe an old theme At the Cross, 00:17:58.31\00:18:01.34 we may gain a new experience by encountering Jesus Christ. 00:18:01.38\00:18:06.82 Was as an Adventist, 00:18:06.85\00:18:08.38 you may be familiar with the cross, 00:18:08.42\00:18:10.99 you may have heard sermons on the cross, 00:18:11.02\00:18:13.76 you may be familiar, but what happens around it, 00:18:13.79\00:18:16.12 you may be familiar with the Ellen White quotation, 00:18:16.16\00:18:18.69 we need to spend the full flourish day 00:18:18.73\00:18:20.56 in silent mediation on the life of Christ 00:18:20.60\00:18:22.33 especially the closing scenes. 00:18:22.36\00:18:23.87 You may remember all of that, but I pray here at this GYC 00:18:23.90\00:18:29.17 through the course of what we discussed together 00:18:29.20\00:18:31.54 that we may not just know something new about the cross, 00:18:31.57\00:18:34.91 but that we may come to the foot of the cross. 00:18:34.94\00:18:39.61 Let's bow our heads as we start with the word of prayer. 00:18:39.65\00:18:43.12 Father in heaven, 00:18:43.15\00:18:46.65 Lord, truly it is a honor to open Your word. 00:18:46.69\00:18:49.52 As we spend the next few moments 00:18:52.59\00:18:54.46 in the pages of scripture, 00:18:54.50\00:18:56.53 Lord, I pray that You would speak to our hearts. 00:18:56.56\00:19:02.14 Teach us Lord today from Your word. 00:19:02.17\00:19:07.24 I pray Lord that the experience 00:19:07.28\00:19:09.78 that You went through on the cross, 00:19:09.81\00:19:11.41 we may see in the vividness today 00:19:11.45\00:19:16.82 that we can apply to our own personal lives. 00:19:16.85\00:19:21.09 I pray Lord that you would speak 00:19:21.12\00:19:22.46 through me at this time, 00:19:22.49\00:19:24.96 in Christ name we pray, amen. 00:19:24.99\00:19:29.40 If you go to the west coast to San Francisco, 00:19:29.43\00:19:31.37 there is a bridge there called the Golden Gate Bridge. 00:19:31.40\00:19:36.04 If you go to the east coast, as you go I-95, 00:19:36.07\00:19:39.24 when you head towards New York City, 00:19:39.27\00:19:40.94 there is another bridge there called 00:19:40.98\00:19:42.31 the George Washington Bridge. 00:19:42.34\00:19:43.81 Wouldn't say amen too quick. 00:19:46.82\00:19:49.08 For the problem with both of those bridges is, 00:19:49.12\00:19:50.99 when you cross those bridges, 00:19:51.02\00:19:52.69 you have to pay money before you go over the bridge. 00:19:52.72\00:19:55.52 In fact, as you're driving to the bridge, 00:19:55.56\00:19:57.16 you'll see a sign up there 00:19:57.19\00:19:58.56 that will say, last exit before what? 00:19:58.59\00:20:02.56 Last exit before tolls. 00:20:02.60\00:20:04.60 Now every time that I approach a bridge like that or a tunnel, 00:20:04.63\00:20:07.50 and you see that sign "Last Exit before toll," 00:20:07.54\00:20:10.01 I don't know what it is, 00:20:10.04\00:20:11.37 but this is what happens in my mind. 00:20:11.41\00:20:12.74 Even though I know I'm driving over the bridge, 00:20:12.77\00:20:15.31 even though I know I'm going on to my destination 00:20:15.34\00:20:17.58 that may be one, two, or three hours away. 00:20:17.61\00:20:20.52 Every time the thought comes into my head, 00:20:20.55\00:20:23.05 "Shall I get off the multi way before I have to pay a toll?" 00:20:23.08\00:20:27.82 You see, when you think about this, 00:20:27.86\00:20:30.46 Gethsemane represented to Jesus, 00:20:30.49\00:20:33.26 the last chance he had to get off the road 00:20:33.29\00:20:39.93 before He got to Calvary. 00:20:39.97\00:20:41.87 Gethsemane represented 00:20:41.90\00:20:43.54 the last opportunity that Jesus had, 00:20:43.57\00:20:45.84 the last chance to get off that road. 00:20:45.87\00:20:47.84 It was the last time in His earthly ministry 00:20:47.88\00:20:51.55 that Jesus had a chance to get off 00:20:51.58\00:20:53.82 before He had to pay the price. 00:20:53.85\00:20:57.79 If you have your Bibles this morning, 00:20:57.82\00:20:59.15 I like to invite you to turn to Matthew Chapter 26, 00:20:59.19\00:21:02.16 and we're gonna read one or two verses 00:21:02.19\00:21:03.89 as they relate 00:21:03.93\00:21:05.26 to the closing scenes of Christ life. 00:21:05.29\00:21:07.63 Matthew Chapter 26... 00:21:07.66\00:21:09.86 Gethsemane, the name or the word Gethsemane, 00:21:14.27\00:21:18.64 it means oil press, 00:21:18.67\00:21:21.18 it was the name of an olive yard 00:21:21.21\00:21:24.01 that sat at the foot of the Mount of Olives. 00:21:24.05\00:21:27.45 If you're privileged to go to Israel today, 00:21:27.48\00:21:30.75 if you'd count it such, 00:21:30.79\00:21:32.39 you can go to where they say Gethsemane was. 00:21:32.42\00:21:35.79 There are eight olive trees there 00:21:35.82\00:21:37.63 in the Garden of Gethsemane 00:21:37.66\00:21:38.99 that they may take you to, 00:21:39.03\00:21:41.03 but the orthodox churches know 00:21:41.06\00:21:42.40 that's not the garden of Gethsemane, 00:21:42.43\00:21:43.90 they have one across the road, 00:21:43.93\00:21:45.27 and they say that's the Garden of Gethsemane. 00:21:45.30\00:21:47.60 But if you talk to certain Bible scholars, they will say, 00:21:47.64\00:21:49.80 none of them are the Garden of Gethsemane. 00:21:49.84\00:21:51.37 It was probably several 100 yards away. 00:21:51.41\00:21:53.68 Be that as it may, Gethsemane, 00:21:53.71\00:21:57.15 this is where Jesus came often times to pray we're told, 00:21:57.18\00:22:00.18 and we're told that in Gethsemane, 00:22:00.22\00:22:01.88 He took all His disciples there to the Garden of Gethsemane. 00:22:01.92\00:22:05.82 He told some of them to wait there. 00:22:05.85\00:22:07.62 And then He took His three... 00:22:07.66\00:22:11.49 favorite disciples, 00:22:11.53\00:22:13.03 and He took them a little further 00:22:13.06\00:22:14.40 and He said, "You wait here." 00:22:14.43\00:22:15.93 And then He went a little bit further from them, 00:22:15.96\00:22:19.13 not out of eyesight, 00:22:19.17\00:22:21.50 but He laid there on the ground, 00:22:21.54\00:22:23.10 and there He started to pray to His heavenly Father. 00:22:23.14\00:22:26.21 And in Matthew 26:29, the Bible says, 00:22:26.24\00:22:30.25 "And he went a little further, and fell on his face 00:22:30.28\00:22:33.31 and prayed, saying, 'Oh my Father, 00:22:33.35\00:22:39.75 if it be possible, let this cup pass from me, 00:22:39.79\00:22:43.32 nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt." 00:22:43.36\00:22:46.80 Now what I want to do, we're gonna take this verse 00:22:46.83\00:22:48.16 and look through it step by step. 00:22:48.20\00:22:50.50 He starts of the Bible, says, He went a little bit further, 00:22:50.53\00:22:52.93 but the words of Jesus in red, let's focus on these. 00:22:52.97\00:22:55.47 The Bible says, "Oh, my Father." 00:22:55.50\00:23:01.61 Another word "Oh Father," 00:23:01.64\00:23:04.45 to me that signifies closeness in a relationship. 00:23:04.48\00:23:08.32 Today you would say that as a term of endearment. 00:23:08.35\00:23:11.65 If my wife said to me, "Oh, Adam," 00:23:11.69\00:23:14.02 and then she went on to say something else, 00:23:14.06\00:23:15.79 it would probably mean that 00:23:15.82\00:23:17.16 I was in her good books at that time, amen. 00:23:17.19\00:23:21.43 "Oh Father," Jesus is closed to His father, 00:23:21.46\00:23:24.87 and the phrase signifies such, 00:23:24.90\00:23:26.80 it goes on and it says, "If it be what possible." 00:23:26.84\00:23:32.47 So he is asking this question, he says, "If it is possible, 00:23:32.51\00:23:35.54 is there anyway, is there any possibility 00:23:35.58\00:23:38.61 about what I'm about to ask." 00:23:38.65\00:23:40.88 See, Jesus, when He came to this point, 00:23:40.92\00:23:42.65 He was looking at death, He was looking at the cross, 00:23:42.68\00:23:44.59 straight in front oh Him, and as He took one look at it, 00:23:44.62\00:23:47.06 He said, "Father, is it possible, 00:23:47.09\00:23:49.42 is there anyway, 00:23:49.46\00:23:51.39 is there anyway around this?" 00:23:51.43\00:23:53.16 It was almost like a rhetorical question, 00:23:53.19\00:23:55.46 'cause Jesus knew that when He came down to earth, 00:23:55.50\00:23:57.80 He was gonna have to die in the cross. 00:23:57.83\00:23:59.60 But as He comes to the cross and sees it in front of Him, 00:23:59.63\00:24:02.10 He says, "Is it possible, is there any other way? 00:24:02.14\00:24:05.97 I was reading the story about a young man 00:24:09.04\00:24:10.51 that was hiking in the mountains, 00:24:10.55\00:24:12.01 and he was hiking in the mountains, 00:24:12.05\00:24:13.88 and the boulder fell on him. 00:24:13.92\00:24:16.65 And as the boulder fell on him, it almost hits him on the body, 00:24:16.69\00:24:19.52 but he managed to move his body out just in time 00:24:19.55\00:24:22.29 that the boulder only hit his arm. 00:24:22.32\00:24:24.33 The problem was, the boulder was 800 pounds, 00:24:24.36\00:24:26.96 and it stopped on his arm and crushed his arm. 00:24:27.00\00:24:30.07 He is there in the mountains in the Canyon. 00:24:30.10\00:24:31.70 No one knows he is there. 00:24:31.73\00:24:33.07 And he is there, and he tries initially 00:24:33.10\00:24:34.44 to push against the boulder and get off him. 00:24:34.47\00:24:37.17 Ridiculous, it's 800 pounds. 00:24:37.21\00:24:39.77 He realizes he needs to save his energy 00:24:39.81\00:24:41.54 for something more intelligent. 00:24:41.58\00:24:43.91 And later on that day or the next day, 00:24:43.95\00:24:45.31 he gets his ropes, 'cause he was a climber, 00:24:45.35\00:24:47.32 I'm not exactly what he did it or how he did it, 00:24:47.35\00:24:49.45 but he tried to make the hoist to around the rock 00:24:49.48\00:24:51.69 so that he could pull it and dislodge it. 00:24:51.72\00:24:53.99 Didn't work, plan failed. 00:24:54.02\00:24:55.69 Next plan, he pulls a knife out of his pocket, 00:24:55.72\00:24:57.86 and he start to stab away at the rock, 00:24:57.89\00:24:59.86 as if he can dig a tunnel in the rock 00:24:59.89\00:25:01.60 and pull his arm out, 00:25:01.63\00:25:02.96 plan doesn't work, knife is blunt. 00:25:03.00\00:25:05.80 Next thing he tries to do, he gets the knife, 00:25:05.83\00:25:07.90 now you need to get out of the Canyon, 00:25:07.94\00:25:09.44 he know he's gonna die. 00:25:09.47\00:25:12.84 He gets the knife, and he tries to cut his arm, 00:25:12.87\00:25:15.08 the knife was so blunt, 00:25:15.11\00:25:16.44 it wouldn't even puncture the skin. 00:25:16.48\00:25:17.81 He waited another day, now on day six. 00:25:20.62\00:25:23.65 He's been in the Canyon for six days, 00:25:23.69\00:25:25.45 he's gonna starve to death soon 00:25:25.49\00:25:26.82 he's gonna die of dehydration soon, 00:25:26.86\00:25:28.32 but he needs to get out. 00:25:28.36\00:25:29.69 What can he do to save his life? 00:25:29.72\00:25:31.56 He takes the terrible decision. 00:25:31.59\00:25:33.29 His name was Aaron Ralston, 00:25:33.33\00:25:34.66 maybe you read about him in the news in Utah. 00:25:34.70\00:25:36.40 And he takes the terrible decision, 00:25:36.43\00:25:37.97 he twists himself to break the bones in his arm 00:25:38.00\00:25:42.17 with no anesthetic. 00:25:42.20\00:25:45.27 And then after the bones were broken in his arm, 00:25:45.31\00:25:47.68 he took out the knife 00:25:47.71\00:25:49.04 that wasn't able to cut his skin before. 00:25:49.08\00:25:50.71 And he managed to hack off his arm, 00:25:50.75\00:25:54.88 took an hour or two. 00:25:54.92\00:25:57.45 Then he walked six miles out to the road, 00:25:57.49\00:26:00.19 where he found himself... 00:26:00.22\00:26:02.09 some of the tourists, and they took him out there. 00:26:02.12\00:26:04.63 The point is, the hardest thing he saved and did it last, 00:26:04.66\00:26:09.33 that I don't want to cut my arm off, 00:26:09.36\00:26:10.70 let me try and move the rock, 00:26:10.73\00:26:12.07 let me try and you know, cut the rock away, 00:26:12.10\00:26:14.04 let me try everything except having to cut my arm off. 00:26:14.07\00:26:16.84 When Jesus came to Gethsemane, it's like He looked at, 00:26:16.87\00:26:19.17 He's like is there any way, is there anyway around this, 00:26:19.21\00:26:23.71 is it possible? 00:26:23.75\00:26:25.08 And the text goes on and it says, 00:26:25.11\00:26:26.65 "Let this cup pass from me." 00:26:26.68\00:26:30.65 See, the cup that Jesus was asking to pass from Him 00:26:30.69\00:26:33.72 was two things, it was the cup of suffering. 00:26:33.76\00:26:36.93 Jesus was about to go 00:26:36.96\00:26:38.29 through an experience of suffering 00:26:38.33\00:26:40.00 unlike anyone has seen before or since. 00:26:40.03\00:26:42.76 In fact, Ellen White says, 00:26:42.80\00:26:44.13 that no criminal was ever treated as bad as he. 00:26:44.17\00:26:48.77 That cup of suffering, the pain and the agony, 00:26:48.80\00:26:51.41 he looked at that and he said, "No... 00:26:51.44\00:26:54.51 is it possible?" 00:26:54.54\00:26:55.88 The other thing in the cup that He saw 00:26:55.91\00:26:58.21 was this cup of death, 00:26:58.25\00:26:59.98 the cup of eternal separation from His heavenly Father. 00:27:00.02\00:27:03.65 And when He looked at that, and saw what it was, 00:27:03.69\00:27:06.05 that deep, black and dark hole of death, 00:27:06.09\00:27:09.59 he said, "No, is there any other way?" 00:27:09.62\00:27:13.29 You see, part of the problem that we have today with sin, 00:27:13.33\00:27:15.86 I believe. 00:27:15.90\00:27:17.70 Our love affair with sin 00:27:17.73\00:27:19.07 is because we really don't understand 00:27:19.10\00:27:22.17 what death is. 00:27:22.20\00:27:24.11 Jesus saw what death was, 00:27:24.14\00:27:26.11 and in that moment of seeing what death was, 00:27:26.14\00:27:28.48 He says, "Is there any way around this? 00:27:28.51\00:27:31.71 Is there anyway around it?" 00:27:31.75\00:27:33.21 Is there anyway around this problem. 00:27:37.52\00:27:41.52 Friends, if we can get a glimpse of what it was, 00:27:41.56\00:27:46.03 too often we have a misunderstanding 00:27:46.06\00:27:47.80 of God's goodness that leads us to misunderstand His wrath. 00:27:47.83\00:27:51.13 Now, I'm not suggesting that we should be scared 00:27:51.17\00:27:53.54 into following God, amen. 00:27:53.57\00:27:55.57 But all too often, we misunderstand His goodness 00:27:55.60\00:27:58.01 forgetting that the Bible says, 00:27:58.04\00:27:59.37 the rain falls on the just and the unjust. 00:27:59.41\00:28:01.54 And we misunderstand His goodness, 00:28:01.58\00:28:03.18 and we see evil people prospering, 00:28:03.21\00:28:05.11 and we think, "Well, God's not too serious 00:28:05.15\00:28:07.05 about what He says about sin." 00:28:07.08\00:28:09.05 When Jesus was on the cross, 00:28:09.08\00:28:10.45 He saw death right in front of Him, 00:28:10.49\00:28:12.15 and he said, "Is it possible, 00:28:12.19\00:28:13.56 is there any other way I can get around this?" 00:28:13.59\00:28:16.73 Now He knew that it wasn't, He knew that it wasn't, 00:28:16.76\00:28:20.40 but He wanted to be spared its wrath. 00:28:20.43\00:28:22.43 You know, in John 12:27, in John 12:27, 00:28:22.46\00:28:26.84 there's a very similar verse to this one, 00:28:26.87\00:28:28.47 where the Bible says, "Father," 00:28:28.50\00:28:30.84 John 12:27, if you're there, 00:28:30.87\00:28:32.84 turn your Bibles, John 12:27, the Bible says, 00:28:32.87\00:28:36.44 "Father save me from this hour, 00:28:36.48\00:28:39.31 but for this cause came I into this world," 00:28:39.35\00:28:42.48 it's a very similar verse to Matthew 26. 00:28:42.52\00:28:44.99 John says, "Father, save me from this hour, 00:28:45.02\00:28:47.62 but this is the reason I came into the world." 00:28:47.66\00:28:50.56 Matthew says, "Is it possible, 00:28:50.59\00:28:52.69 nevertheless not my will, but yours be done." 00:28:52.73\00:28:56.10 You see, both of these two verses, 00:28:56.13\00:28:58.33 they have in them, what we would call, 00:28:58.37\00:29:00.40 a conjunctive adverb, a conjunctive adverb, 00:29:00.44\00:29:05.71 the word "but" and the word "nevertheless." 00:29:05.74\00:29:08.74 You see, the verse in Matthew 26, 00:29:08.78\00:29:10.68 if you turn back to Matthew 26, 00:29:10.71\00:29:12.41 that verse is hinged on that one word, 00:29:12.45\00:29:15.42 nevertheless. 00:29:15.45\00:29:18.65 See, a similar word to this could be 00:29:18.69\00:29:20.26 something like nonetheless, it could be however. 00:29:20.29\00:29:23.46 Now a conjunctive adverb, 00:29:23.49\00:29:25.56 their function in a sentence is to do this, 00:29:25.59\00:29:30.10 is to connect two independent thoughts 00:29:30.13\00:29:33.67 or clauses together. 00:29:33.70\00:29:35.84 Now when adverb, you know, looks at a word, 00:29:35.87\00:29:40.28 but a conjunctive adverb, it looks at two sentences 00:29:40.31\00:29:44.15 that could be two complete separate independent thoughts 00:29:44.18\00:29:47.98 and it puts them together. 00:29:48.02\00:29:49.68 And depending on the adverb in the middle, 00:29:49.72\00:29:52.19 where there is one that compares, 00:29:52.22\00:29:53.82 where there is one that contrast 00:29:53.86\00:29:55.42 or whether there is one that emphasizes 00:29:55.46\00:29:59.89 the sentence has different reading. 00:29:59.93\00:30:02.66 Now this word here is nevertheless. 00:30:02.70\00:30:05.00 Nevertheless is more formal and it's more emphatic 00:30:05.03\00:30:09.30 than the one we more often use which is however. 00:30:09.34\00:30:12.54 It's not too often that you and I 00:30:12.57\00:30:13.98 in our daily conversation use the word nevertheless, 00:30:14.01\00:30:16.78 because it's very, very emphatic. 00:30:16.81\00:30:18.71 Most of the time, we would say, however. 00:30:18.75\00:30:21.28 And what this conjunctive adverb nevertheless 00:30:21.32\00:30:24.59 or however does is this. 00:30:24.62\00:30:27.36 It compares two sentences 00:30:27.39\00:30:29.76 and it puts, listen carefully, 00:30:29.79\00:30:31.43 more emphasis in the second sentence 00:30:31.46\00:30:35.46 or the second half of the sentence 00:30:35.50\00:30:37.30 than the first half of the sentence. 00:30:37.33\00:30:40.47 More emphasis when we thought, 00:30:40.50\00:30:42.67 the second half as opposed to the first half. 00:30:42.70\00:30:45.64 So let's re read the sentence, 00:30:45.67\00:30:47.04 "Oh Father, is it possible, let this cup pass from me." 00:30:47.08\00:30:50.05 Now that can stand alone as a sentence. 00:30:50.08\00:30:52.85 Then it says, nevertheless. 00:30:52.88\00:30:54.78 And he goes on and says, "Not my will," but what? 00:30:54.82\00:30:58.15 "Your's be done." 00:30:58.19\00:30:59.52 So the more important emphasis is that, 00:30:59.55\00:31:01.79 it's not what I want, but it's what you want. 00:31:01.82\00:31:04.23 Even though I don't want it, I will be willing to do this, 00:31:04.26\00:31:06.63 because you wanted. 00:31:06.66\00:31:08.20 You know, in daily conversation, 00:31:08.23\00:31:09.96 we may use these words in different ways, 00:31:10.00\00:31:13.00 for example, we could say something here at GYC, 00:31:13.03\00:31:16.20 we could say something like, 00:31:16.24\00:31:19.11 the food at GYC... 00:31:19.14\00:31:24.68 is not exactly gourmet. 00:31:24.71\00:31:26.38 Now that can stand alone as a sentence, 00:31:30.35\00:31:33.32 however, used the wrong word, 00:31:33.36\00:31:36.59 the food at GYC is not exactly gourmet, 00:31:36.62\00:31:39.93 nevertheless I will be thankful... 00:31:39.96\00:31:45.73 I will be happy, and I will not complain. 00:31:45.77\00:31:51.47 Amen. 00:31:51.51\00:31:53.68 So the more important thing is that 00:31:53.71\00:31:55.41 you're not going to complain, you're going to be thankful, 00:31:55.44\00:31:57.25 and you're going to enjoy as best as you can, 00:31:57.28\00:31:59.61 the food here, 00:31:59.65\00:32:01.18 as opposed to talking about its various taste. 00:32:01.22\00:32:07.12 You see, it signifies the second half of the sentence 00:32:07.16\00:32:10.03 is more important than the first half. 00:32:10.06\00:32:12.36 Too often though in our praises 00:32:12.39\00:32:13.73 and can be too often in our prayers, 00:32:13.76\00:32:15.10 in our communication and relationship with God. 00:32:15.13\00:32:17.53 Our experience is that 00:32:17.57\00:32:19.03 the second half of the sentence holds less weight 00:32:19.07\00:32:21.80 than the first half of the sentence. 00:32:21.84\00:32:24.97 We tell God what we want. 00:32:25.01\00:32:27.18 We tell God everything that He already knows, 00:32:27.21\00:32:29.28 and then at the very end, we might just tack on 00:32:29.31\00:32:32.11 like a spare wheel on the back of the car, 00:32:32.15\00:32:33.98 yup, whatever your will is God. 00:32:34.02\00:32:35.35 We tell God what career we've chosen, 00:32:38.49\00:32:40.19 we tell God where we're gonna study, 00:32:40.22\00:32:41.69 we tell him what we're gonna study, 00:32:41.72\00:32:43.06 and then we say, "Oh Lord, please guide me." 00:32:43.09\00:32:47.10 We tell God who we're gonna marry, 00:32:47.13\00:32:49.06 we tell God why we're gonna marry them. 00:32:49.10\00:32:51.47 We give Him all the list of reasons 00:32:51.50\00:32:52.87 that He already knows and then we say, 00:32:52.90\00:32:54.34 "Oh, but please guide me, give me Your will." 00:32:54.37\00:32:58.94 You know, two weeks ago, 00:32:58.97\00:33:00.31 I've got an email from my grandmother-in-law, 00:33:00.34\00:33:05.51 my wife's grandmother. 00:33:05.55\00:33:07.58 She's 98 years old, 00:33:07.62\00:33:11.59 fit, healthy, and strong, 00:33:11.62\00:33:16.19 and she has an email address. 00:33:16.22\00:33:17.56 Now when 98 year old grandmother-in-law 00:33:21.43\00:33:24.37 say anything, you pay attention, 00:33:24.40\00:33:26.30 when they send me a personal email, 00:33:26.33\00:33:30.14 I take attention. 00:33:30.17\00:33:31.74 I tell my wife, "Hey, look, your grandmother wrote to me." 00:33:31.77\00:33:34.94 So I start to read the email, 00:33:34.98\00:33:36.31 what does my grandmother-in-law say, 00:33:36.34\00:33:37.71 she says, "I understand you're coming 00:33:37.75\00:33:39.75 to see us in California soon, 00:33:39.78\00:33:42.88 I have spoken to the head elder of the church, 00:33:42.92\00:33:46.19 and he would like you to preach." 00:33:46.22\00:33:49.59 The email went on to say, 00:33:49.62\00:33:50.96 "I have spoken to both the pastors of the church, 00:33:50.99\00:33:53.43 they also would like you to preach." 00:33:53.46\00:33:56.33 Then she said a few other things 00:33:56.36\00:33:57.70 and then she said these words, 00:33:57.73\00:33:59.17 she said, "Please respond to this email with a yes." 00:33:59.20\00:34:05.64 What am I supposed to say? 00:34:11.48\00:34:12.91 Please respond with a yes. 00:34:12.95\00:34:16.08 Needless to say, I responded with a yes. 00:34:16.12\00:34:18.92 When your grandmother-in-law who is 98 years old, 00:34:18.95\00:34:21.12 writes to you and says, please respond with a yes. 00:34:21.16\00:34:23.46 Well, okay, I'll respond with a yes. 00:34:23.49\00:34:27.20 Now I'm about one third of her age, 00:34:27.23\00:34:30.63 just a bit more. 00:34:30.67\00:34:33.23 It's okay in human term for her to tell me, 00:34:33.27\00:34:35.34 "Listen, I like you to keep on, 00:34:35.37\00:34:37.47 the pastors would like you to preach, 00:34:37.51\00:34:39.07 and please say yes." 00:34:39.11\00:34:42.88 Imagine if the shoe was on the other foot so to speak, 00:34:42.91\00:34:45.71 and I am writing her an email, telling her what to do. 00:34:45.75\00:34:48.58 "Yeah, I know, you're 98 years old, 00:34:51.65\00:34:53.42 fit, healthy, and strong, 00:34:53.46\00:34:54.79 but listen, you need to do this, this, and this." 00:34:54.82\00:34:57.23 It will be seen as utter disrespect. 00:34:57.26\00:35:00.53 And yet all too often, in our relationship with God, 00:35:00.56\00:35:03.16 we're like myself, in a sense God is up there and we tell, 00:35:03.20\00:35:07.27 "God, can you do this, 00:35:07.30\00:35:08.64 and by the way, please say yes." 00:35:08.67\00:35:12.84 And I'm only saying please 'cause I'm being polite, 00:35:12.87\00:35:14.54 really I'm saying say yes. 00:35:14.58\00:35:15.94 Nevertheless in our prayers stands there, 00:35:20.12\00:35:25.49 and signifies that 00:35:25.52\00:35:26.86 we're surrendering our will to God, 00:35:26.89\00:35:28.59 as opposed to us telling God what to do. 00:35:28.62\00:35:32.53 It's paramount in our lives that in our prayer life 00:35:32.56\00:35:35.06 that we recognize the second half of the sentence 00:35:35.10\00:35:37.57 is more important than the first half. 00:35:37.60\00:35:39.90 And that we're willing to submit, 00:35:39.93\00:35:41.30 we're willing to surrender 00:35:41.34\00:35:42.74 whatever it might be to God and claim His victory, 00:35:42.77\00:35:46.14 'cause we come to God with our prayers. 00:35:46.17\00:35:47.58 And all too often we tell God, 00:35:47.61\00:35:49.54 and we don't claim the power and the strength 00:35:49.58\00:35:51.98 that is found at the cross. 00:35:52.01\00:35:54.98 See, when Jesus came to the cross, 00:35:55.02\00:35:56.62 He was willing to surrender and submit Himself 00:35:56.65\00:35:58.69 as He came to the cross. 00:35:58.72\00:36:00.06 How is it with us? How is it with us? 00:36:00.09\00:36:03.79 Do we say to God, we should say to God, 00:36:03.83\00:36:05.96 "Lord, I've chosen this career, I know, it's only because 00:36:05.99\00:36:10.13 I want the comfortable life and wage packet 00:36:10.17\00:36:12.77 that this career brings, 00:36:12.80\00:36:14.50 nevertheless I know God wants me to change now, 00:36:14.54\00:36:18.61 and I'm willing to change. 00:36:18.64\00:36:21.31 I've chosen to marry this person, 00:36:21.34\00:36:23.31 nevertheless I know 00:36:23.35\00:36:24.68 the Holy Spirit is tugging my heart 00:36:24.71\00:36:26.05 that it's not the person I should marry 00:36:26.08\00:36:27.72 and even though I've set a date... 00:36:27.75\00:36:32.22 I'll change. 00:36:32.25\00:36:34.46 I have decided not to go into ministry 00:36:34.49\00:36:36.42 due to my family pressure, 00:36:36.46\00:36:37.79 my mom, my dad, they tell me, don't go to ministry, 00:36:37.83\00:36:40.03 be a doctor or dentist or lawyer or something else. 00:36:40.06\00:36:43.53 I decided not to go into ministry 00:36:43.57\00:36:45.47 even though God is calling me, 00:36:45.50\00:36:47.10 nevertheless I will risk my family's displeasure 00:36:47.14\00:36:51.57 and go into ministry, 00:36:51.61\00:36:54.08 'cause I know it's the path that God has for me. 00:36:54.11\00:36:58.01 I do not like the person I am married to. 00:36:58.05\00:37:01.65 In fact, I hate them. 00:37:05.89\00:37:08.89 Nevertheless, I recognize, I vow till death do us part. 00:37:12.06\00:37:19.57 I am addicted, I am addicted to sex, 00:37:19.60\00:37:23.61 and I am not married. 00:37:23.64\00:37:28.71 Nevertheless, I will claim God's victory on my behalf. 00:37:28.74\00:37:32.38 I feel attractions to the same sex. 00:37:32.41\00:37:34.65 Nevertheless, I claim God's power, 00:37:34.68\00:37:36.72 as it gives me victory 00:37:36.75\00:37:38.09 and to keep those things under subjection. 00:37:38.12\00:37:41.16 I don't value my body, 00:37:41.19\00:37:42.52 I want to harm my body, nevertheless, 00:37:42.56\00:37:45.33 I will take hold of the promise, 00:37:45.36\00:37:46.76 but I'm valuable in the sight of God. 00:37:46.80\00:37:49.03 I enjoy the secret sin. 00:37:49.06\00:37:51.67 No one else knows about it. 00:37:51.70\00:37:53.17 Nevertheless, I will claim the promise 00:37:53.20\00:37:55.40 that God is able to give me victory 00:37:55.44\00:37:57.31 over every secret sin that let me lay it aside. 00:37:57.34\00:38:01.74 I have dreams and desires, 00:38:01.78\00:38:03.31 I could be the first one in my family 00:38:03.35\00:38:05.51 to have a masters or a PhD. 00:38:05.55\00:38:07.75 My parents, my uncles, 00:38:10.79\00:38:12.12 my grandparents, none of them have it. 00:38:12.15\00:38:13.49 I could be the first in my family. 00:38:13.52\00:38:15.09 Nevertheless, I recognize God is calling me to drop it now, 00:38:15.12\00:38:19.19 and go to the mission field. 00:38:19.23\00:38:22.86 I'm addicted to watching pornography... 00:38:22.90\00:38:25.33 on my Smartphone, 00:38:32.14\00:38:34.68 only I have the fingerprint to open it, 00:38:34.71\00:38:37.31 so no one can check my history. 00:38:37.35\00:38:40.85 Only I have the four-digit code, 00:38:40.88\00:38:43.55 no one else can check it, no one knows. 00:38:43.59\00:38:49.86 Nevertheless, I know it's destroying my character, 00:38:49.89\00:38:53.60 changing my view of the opposite sex, 00:38:53.63\00:38:55.66 eroding my morals and I will 00:38:55.70\00:38:59.03 and I know God is able to deliver me. 00:38:59.07\00:39:02.24 And I'll get rid of my Smartphone 00:39:02.27\00:39:03.61 and give a dumb phone too to take the temptation away. 00:39:03.64\00:39:10.08 I like sin, nevertheless, I won't allow righteousness. 00:39:10.11\00:39:13.28 I like enjoying the pleasures of sin. 00:39:13.31\00:39:15.48 Nevertheless, I want to enjoy purity. 00:39:15.52\00:39:19.95 You see the way they're phrased, 00:39:19.99\00:39:21.32 we're giving God ability to be victorious on our behalf. 00:39:21.36\00:39:25.73 Jesus went on to say, let's go back to Matthew 26, 00:39:25.76\00:39:28.13 Jesus went on to say in Matthew 26, 00:39:28.16\00:39:30.27 He went on to say, "Nevertheless, 00:39:30.30\00:39:32.23 he said, not as I will, but as" what? 00:39:32.27\00:39:36.10 "But let your will be done." 00:39:36.14\00:39:37.47 He said, "Nevertheless, not as I will." 00:39:37.51\00:39:39.34 Now this passage has always given me 00:39:39.37\00:39:41.28 some kind of, you know... 00:39:41.31\00:39:45.35 isn't the will of God and will of Jesus the same. 00:39:45.38\00:39:48.22 Don't we teach that Jesus and God 00:39:48.25\00:39:50.25 while different persons are the same in thought, 00:39:50.29\00:39:52.85 purpose, character, desires, and motives. 00:39:52.89\00:39:56.56 Jesus and His father were one. 00:39:56.59\00:39:58.83 John says it in John 4:34 and John 5:30, 00:39:58.86\00:40:03.53 where Jesus says, "I seek not mine own will," 00:40:03.57\00:40:05.27 and Matthew says, 00:40:05.30\00:40:06.63 "But the will of Him who," what? 00:40:06.67\00:40:08.74 "Sent me." 00:40:08.77\00:40:10.11 You see, when Jesus said, not as I will, 00:40:10.14\00:40:12.11 I believe this was the humanity of Jesus speaking through, 00:40:12.14\00:40:16.18 where Jesus came down here on to earth, 00:40:16.21\00:40:18.15 He took on Him the form of man, 00:40:18.18\00:40:19.95 He took on Him the character of man, 00:40:19.98\00:40:23.32 He took on human nature 00:40:23.35\00:40:24.72 that had been degraded by 4,000 years of sin. 00:40:24.75\00:40:27.32 And he took this on, 00:40:27.36\00:40:28.72 so you and I can identify with Him. 00:40:28.76\00:40:30.96 And so He can identify with us. 00:40:30.99\00:40:33.46 Hebrew says that He was touched 00:40:33.50\00:40:35.80 with the feelings of our infirmity 00:40:35.83\00:40:37.27 was on old points tempted like as we are, 00:40:37.30\00:40:39.47 yet without sin. 00:40:39.50\00:40:41.50 See, Jesus had the same struggles 00:40:41.54\00:40:43.04 you and I had and even more when he said, "Not as I will." 00:40:43.07\00:40:48.54 Not as I will. 00:40:48.58\00:40:52.11 See, too often, when we come to God, 00:40:52.15\00:40:55.62 we don't put the emphasis 00:40:55.65\00:40:56.99 on the second half of the sentence. 00:40:57.02\00:40:59.02 The main point of Jesus was not His personal will, 00:40:59.05\00:41:02.02 to preserve His life without pain and suffering, 00:41:02.06\00:41:03.93 but it was the Father's will 00:41:03.96\00:41:05.29 in the plan of salvation which... 00:41:05.33\00:41:09.53 How is it with us when we pray to God, 00:41:09.56\00:41:14.57 in the mundane situations of life? 00:41:14.60\00:41:17.24 See all too often we pray for God's will 00:41:17.27\00:41:19.21 only when we get to a crisis. 00:41:19.24\00:41:23.68 Jesus had a connection with His Father 00:41:23.71\00:41:25.21 throughout all the mundane situations of life, 00:41:25.25\00:41:27.15 so when He got to Calvary, 00:41:27.18\00:41:28.52 it was no big deal when he said, 00:41:28.55\00:41:29.88 "Not my will, but yours be done." 00:41:29.92\00:41:31.25 I mean, obviously, it was a big deal, 00:41:31.29\00:41:32.62 but it wasn't like He was a change of character of Him, 00:41:32.65\00:41:34.72 it wasn't like He was out of character. 00:41:34.76\00:41:36.29 See, Jesus, everyday of His life, 00:41:36.32\00:41:38.09 asked what the Father's will is, 00:41:38.13\00:41:39.66 when he woke up in the morning what shall I wear, 00:41:39.69\00:41:41.30 when He was thinking about spending money, 00:41:41.33\00:41:42.66 what shall I spend my money on, 00:41:42.70\00:41:44.03 when he thought, where shall I go, 00:41:44.07\00:41:45.40 God was guiding him. 00:41:45.43\00:41:47.14 All too often in our lives though, 00:41:47.17\00:41:48.84 we separate the natural from the supernatural, 00:41:48.87\00:41:51.61 and so we can handle the natural world, 00:41:51.64\00:41:53.41 we can handle where we work, we can handle where we study, 00:41:53.44\00:41:56.18 we can handle all these other things, 00:41:56.21\00:41:57.91 and only if a crisis happens, do we come to God. 00:41:57.95\00:42:03.15 We don't pray to God all semester long, 00:42:03.18\00:42:05.49 and when we come to exams, "God, guide me." 00:42:05.52\00:42:09.69 Now God may be merciful, 00:42:09.72\00:42:11.33 and He may get you through that, 00:42:11.36\00:42:12.89 but God wants to be with you there 00:42:12.93\00:42:14.30 all the way along. 00:42:14.33\00:42:17.20 We don't pray to God, 00:42:17.23\00:42:18.57 "Lord, guide me how to spend my money 00:42:18.60\00:42:19.93 when I go to the shopping mall." 00:42:19.97\00:42:21.30 No, we just spend our money how we want. 00:42:21.34\00:42:22.67 And when we get into debt, we then want God to release us. 00:42:22.70\00:42:27.38 Crisis, God says no, 00:42:27.41\00:42:29.61 I want to be in every aspect of your life. 00:42:29.64\00:42:32.11 I want to be in the small, and the little things. 00:42:32.15\00:42:34.75 Jesus went on to pray, "Not as I will," but as what? 00:42:34.78\00:42:39.55 "You will." 00:42:39.59\00:42:41.06 See, in John 18:11, the Bible says, 00:42:41.09\00:42:44.03 I'll just quote it, you can check it later on. 00:42:44.06\00:42:46.03 The Bible says, "The cup which to father has given me, 00:42:46.06\00:42:49.86 shall I not drink it." 00:42:49.90\00:42:53.07 See, the cup of death and sin, Jesus was willing to take. 00:42:53.10\00:42:57.61 The will of God was the most important thing, 00:42:57.64\00:42:59.67 and He was willing to surrender to it. 00:42:59.71\00:43:01.91 You see, Jesus had total submission to His father 00:43:01.94\00:43:04.51 and in total submission, first of all, 00:43:04.55\00:43:06.72 there has to be the desire 00:43:06.75\00:43:08.15 and the willingness to be obedient to God. 00:43:08.18\00:43:11.85 He was willing to be obedient, and He submits. 00:43:11.89\00:43:16.62 Sometime in our relationship with God, 00:43:16.66\00:43:19.16 when we said, not as I will, but as you will, 00:43:19.19\00:43:20.80 we don't have that desire, that willingness to surrender. 00:43:20.83\00:43:23.50 And we don't even have the desire 00:43:23.53\00:43:24.97 to be obedient either. 00:43:25.00\00:43:28.60 The two of them go hand in hand. 00:43:28.64\00:43:31.14 When Jesus surrendered, 00:43:31.17\00:43:33.21 He had total submission to His father's will. 00:43:33.24\00:43:36.04 Today, the theme of the day 00:43:36.08\00:43:37.41 is total submission in the context of the cross. 00:43:37.45\00:43:41.62 See, a key aspect of Christ attitude 00:43:41.65\00:43:43.59 was His willingness to complete what He had started, 00:43:43.62\00:43:46.49 to be obedient to the task at hand, 00:43:46.52\00:43:48.86 and one of the key questions for us, 00:43:48.89\00:43:50.66 in the question of submission is, 00:43:50.69\00:43:52.23 are we willing to be obedient to what God's will is. 00:43:52.26\00:43:57.60 You may have heard the story. 00:43:57.63\00:43:59.83 A little boy was sitting on the stool, 00:43:59.87\00:44:02.24 and his mom told him, "You've got to sit there, 00:44:02.27\00:44:03.67 'cause you've been a naughty boy." 00:44:03.71\00:44:05.27 And after he sits there for a few minutes, 00:44:05.31\00:44:06.71 he says to his mom, he says, 00:44:06.74\00:44:08.34 "I may be sitting on the outside, 00:44:08.38\00:44:10.28 but I'm standing up inside." 00:44:10.31\00:44:11.88 Too often our obedience, "to God" is often like that. 00:44:15.82\00:44:19.62 We may externally comply, 00:44:19.65\00:44:21.96 but internally we're not really submitting 00:44:21.99\00:44:24.36 everything to the Father. 00:44:24.39\00:44:26.33 We're not submitting all of who we are to God. 00:44:26.36\00:44:30.23 You see, today, 00:44:30.27\00:44:31.60 we are called to deny ourselves. 00:44:31.63\00:44:34.07 And listen, one of the motivating factors 00:44:34.10\00:44:36.27 in denying ourselves 00:44:36.30\00:44:37.64 that we have given to us in the Bible is, 00:44:37.67\00:44:39.61 you deny yourself, 00:44:39.64\00:44:41.91 because Jesus denied for you, make sense? 00:44:41.94\00:44:45.18 Jesus denied for you, so you deny for Him. 00:44:45.21\00:44:48.78 And the way it goes is this, 00:44:48.82\00:44:51.02 you deny what's bad, 00:44:51.05\00:44:54.36 you deny yourself what's bad so you can gain what is good. 00:44:54.39\00:45:00.96 Deny yourself sin, and you can gain heaven. 00:45:01.00\00:45:03.93 Deny yourself all these terrible things down here, 00:45:03.97\00:45:06.23 and you can gain eternity with God. 00:45:06.27\00:45:08.54 Deny what's bad, 00:45:08.57\00:45:09.90 so you can gain back what's good. 00:45:09.94\00:45:11.37 When Jesus was denying Himself, He was not denying anything 00:45:11.41\00:45:15.78 that was bad to gain what was good. 00:45:15.81\00:45:18.11 It was the reverse with Jesus. 00:45:18.15\00:45:19.61 He was denying what was good, because of what was bad. 00:45:19.65\00:45:25.59 He denied a place in heaven because of sin, 00:45:25.62\00:45:28.42 is different to the denial that God calls us to deny. 00:45:28.46\00:45:31.86 In many ways, Jesus denial was like a level 10, 00:45:31.89\00:45:36.33 I'm denying eternity, 00:45:36.36\00:45:38.63 because the wages of sin is death. 00:45:38.67\00:45:42.80 We though are just called to deny what's bad. 00:45:42.84\00:45:47.58 So we can get back what is good. 00:45:47.61\00:45:51.98 It's almost like the diet version 00:45:52.01\00:45:53.92 of self-denial. 00:45:53.95\00:45:56.25 Now I'm not negating this many, many big things here 00:45:56.28\00:45:58.45 that God is calling you, you made to deny this week. 00:45:58.49\00:46:02.89 Things that have a hold on you that you just can't let go. 00:46:02.92\00:46:07.13 What I'm trying to say is 00:46:07.16\00:46:08.50 that the self-denial Jesus went through, 00:46:08.53\00:46:10.30 those are same in many ways, but slightly different. 00:46:10.33\00:46:14.00 He denied what was good, 00:46:14.04\00:46:16.07 He denied what was good to get something bad. 00:46:16.10\00:46:19.34 It's kind of like when you are buying something 00:46:19.37\00:46:22.64 that you don't need. 00:46:22.68\00:46:24.81 Can anyone relate to this? 00:46:24.85\00:46:27.48 You buy something you don't need 00:46:27.52\00:46:30.19 and you don't use it properly 00:46:30.22\00:46:31.92 and few months or years later 00:46:31.95\00:46:33.82 you finally come around to the point, 00:46:33.86\00:46:35.32 where you sell it on eBay or something 00:46:35.36\00:46:37.29 and you sell it for a fraction of the cost 00:46:37.33\00:46:39.09 that you bought it for. 00:46:39.13\00:46:40.66 It does not give you a good feeling. 00:46:40.70\00:46:43.57 eBay only is a good feeling when you buy it for a low price 00:46:43.60\00:46:46.74 and sell it for a higher price and you say praise the Lord. 00:46:46.77\00:46:49.94 You know, one time, a few years ago, 00:46:49.97\00:46:51.87 I bought myself a boat. 00:46:51.91\00:46:55.38 You're probably looking at me wondering, 00:46:55.41\00:46:56.75 why did he buy a boat. 00:46:56.78\00:46:58.28 Well, I don't know either. 00:46:58.31\00:47:01.32 The way I try to explain is 00:47:01.35\00:47:02.82 I think I had a midlife crisis early when I was 30 years old. 00:47:02.85\00:47:07.22 It's supposed to be 40 or 50, 00:47:07.26\00:47:08.59 but I think I had mine earlier, I had mine already. 00:47:08.62\00:47:12.19 So when I'm 30, I go and buy a boat, 00:47:12.23\00:47:14.36 for who knows what reason. 00:47:14.40\00:47:16.83 I had all these dreams of driving this boat and being, 00:47:16.87\00:47:19.17 you know, an accomplished water skier 00:47:19.20\00:47:20.54 or wakeboarder or whatever, 00:47:20.57\00:47:21.90 so I buy myself a boat, only used it twice. 00:47:21.94\00:47:28.18 Once in Wales, when we took it 00:47:28.21\00:47:29.54 on the youth trip down to Croatia to the Adriatic Sea 00:47:29.58\00:47:32.21 and we used it down, they had a great time. 00:47:32.25\00:47:33.68 Anyway the boat broke down... 00:47:33.72\00:47:36.69 in 2008, 00:47:36.72\00:47:38.42 brought it back to England, 00:47:41.92\00:47:43.53 finally got it fixed after five years. 00:47:43.56\00:47:47.10 My uncle who is a mechanic fixed it, 00:47:47.13\00:47:48.66 and when your uncle who the mechanic 00:47:48.70\00:47:50.03 fixes it for you for free, you can't push him. 00:47:50.07\00:47:52.60 And if he wanted to take five years, 00:47:52.63\00:47:53.97 then he has to take five years. 00:47:54.00\00:47:56.04 And in the end of fixing after five years, 00:47:56.07\00:47:57.67 it looked very good, he had done a very good job. 00:47:57.71\00:47:59.74 The engine was nice. 00:47:59.77\00:48:01.11 He had rebuilt it, whatever. 00:48:01.14\00:48:04.45 So I put it back on eBay to sell it 00:48:04.48\00:48:07.85 for the same price I bought it and some. 00:48:07.88\00:48:10.22 Boat doesn't sell. 00:48:13.79\00:48:15.59 I lowered the price by few 100 pounds, 00:48:15.62\00:48:18.83 boat doesn't sell. 00:48:18.86\00:48:20.20 I lower it again by few 100 pounds, 00:48:20.23\00:48:21.56 boat doesn't sell. 00:48:21.60\00:48:22.93 I lower it again by few 100 pounds, 00:48:22.96\00:48:24.30 boat doesn't sell. 00:48:24.33\00:48:25.67 I lower it now to half the original price, 00:48:25.70\00:48:27.04 boat doesn't sell. 00:48:27.07\00:48:28.40 I won't even tell you what I bought it for, 00:48:28.44\00:48:29.94 and I what I sold it for. 00:48:29.97\00:48:31.31 It's too painful for me to still say it. 00:48:31.34\00:48:33.81 I'm now thankful I have a very good wife, 00:48:36.85\00:48:38.78 who is very patient with me. 00:48:38.81\00:48:40.75 But it's also there for me now 00:48:40.78\00:48:42.12 that I'm married to stop me doing such silly things again. 00:48:42.15\00:48:44.32 Needless to say, 00:48:47.82\00:48:49.32 I believe encapsulate a little bit. 00:48:49.36\00:48:54.70 Jesus gave up something good, and got back crumbs in return. 00:48:54.73\00:48:58.23 But God calls us to deny something that is bad 00:48:58.27\00:49:01.27 in order that we can get something good back. 00:49:01.30\00:49:03.71 He calls us to live a life of self-denial, 00:49:03.74\00:49:06.24 to deny something. 00:49:06.27\00:49:07.61 What is God calling you to deny today here 00:49:07.64\00:49:10.45 while you are here at GYC? 00:49:10.48\00:49:12.65 See, people talk about sacrifice. 00:49:12.68\00:49:15.08 Jesus gave up something good to get something bad. 00:49:15.12\00:49:17.75 But my question to you this morning is, 00:49:17.79\00:49:19.35 what is God calling you that is bad to give up 00:49:19.39\00:49:22.26 in order to get back something that's good. 00:49:22.29\00:49:24.23 What is that nevertheless in your life this morning 00:49:24.26\00:49:27.86 that God is calling to, yeah, I know that. 00:49:27.90\00:49:30.30 Nevertheless, I will give you power here 00:49:30.33\00:49:33.03 to give you victory. 00:49:33.07\00:49:35.00 What is holding you down 00:49:35.04\00:49:36.37 with seemingly unbreakable chains. 00:49:36.40\00:49:38.27 Maybe you're struggling with pride 00:49:38.31\00:49:40.38 that's so deadly of sin that we cloak and hide away. 00:49:40.41\00:49:45.01 That sin that we hide under words like, 00:49:45.05\00:49:47.38 I want to be the best for God. 00:49:47.42\00:49:49.08 I want to be all I can be for God. 00:49:49.12\00:49:51.29 God calls us to be the head and not the tail. 00:49:51.32\00:49:53.19 And we cloak it in things like that. 00:49:53.22\00:49:54.86 And while those words are true, 00:49:54.89\00:49:56.93 we know in ourselves, it's just pride. 00:49:56.96\00:49:59.13 We just want to be the best for our self. 00:49:59.16\00:50:00.53 And God calling you, surrender your pride, 00:50:03.93\00:50:06.13 maybe it's your ambition 00:50:06.17\00:50:07.54 that God is calling you to surrender today. 00:50:07.57\00:50:11.11 Maybe you've always dreamed 00:50:11.14\00:50:12.61 of being certain career in your life, 00:50:12.64\00:50:14.64 and God is calling you to lay that aside. 00:50:14.68\00:50:17.91 Maybe it's your dream to be a pastor, 00:50:17.95\00:50:19.81 maybe it's even your dream to be a doctor, 00:50:19.85\00:50:22.82 maybe it's ambition that drives you in this world 00:50:22.85\00:50:25.09 from day to day, 00:50:25.12\00:50:26.45 each day ambition drives you, it drives you, it drives you. 00:50:26.49\00:50:29.32 You have earthly ambition, 00:50:29.36\00:50:30.69 but you know not yet what a heavenly ambition is. 00:50:30.73\00:50:34.20 Maybe even elected 00:50:34.23\00:50:35.56 to a position of leadership in your church 00:50:35.60\00:50:37.13 or your community or your youth group, 00:50:37.17\00:50:38.67 and the only reason why you've been elected 00:50:38.70\00:50:40.07 to positional leadership is could you drive a nice car 00:50:40.10\00:50:42.37 and you have a, you know, 00:50:42.40\00:50:44.34 seem to do well in life successfully. 00:50:44.37\00:50:46.84 And you still don't know what spiritual ambition is, 00:50:46.88\00:50:49.51 you're bankrupt. 00:50:49.54\00:50:52.68 And you want to say to God, 00:50:52.71\00:50:54.05 nevertheless, even though I have these ambitions 00:50:54.08\00:50:55.72 I'm struggling with, 00:50:55.75\00:50:57.09 I want Your power in my life to give me heavenly ambition. 00:50:57.12\00:51:01.56 Turn in your Bible to Luke 5:5, 00:51:01.59\00:51:03.36 it's our last text 00:51:03.39\00:51:04.73 that we're gonna look at this morning. 00:51:04.76\00:51:06.09 Luke Chapter 5:5... 00:51:06.13\00:51:10.17 and there in Luke 5:5, we have a verse 00:51:10.20\00:51:13.00 that kind of sums up and encapsulates 00:51:13.03\00:51:15.50 what we've been looking at today, 00:51:15.54\00:51:17.27 Luke 5:5. 00:51:17.31\00:51:23.04 What is God calling you to surrender today?
