Good morning and happy Sabbath, ASI. 00:00:19.13\00:00:22.13 Happy Sabbath. 00:00:22.16\00:00:23.67 Isn't it a blessing to be here today? 00:00:23.70\00:00:26.25 Yes. Yes, it is. 00:00:26.28\00:00:28.72 And you know when you see me 00:00:28.75\00:00:30.03 what am I gonna be talking about? 00:00:30.06\00:00:32.58 The offering and projects that the offering will support. 00:00:32.61\00:00:37.17 And so today is no different, 00:00:37.20\00:00:39.17 we want to bring before you some projects and highlight 00:00:39.20\00:00:42.74 how God is going to bless us through the offering. 00:00:42.77\00:00:46.56 With me is Dr. Larry Blackmer and he's the vice president 00:00:46.59\00:00:50.58 with the North American Division, education department 00:00:50.61\00:00:54.18 and Ed Zinke who is a businessman with ASI. 00:00:54.21\00:00:58.25 And so he is on several General Conference committees 00:00:58.28\00:01:01.60 and as a consultant with By Design Science. 00:01:01.63\00:01:06.36 Dr. Blackmer, tell us about the project 00:01:06.39\00:01:09.96 By Design Science and how it began. 00:01:09.99\00:01:13.21 A number of years ago, 00:01:13.24\00:01:14.92 when the curriculum committee brought a recommendation 00:01:14.95\00:01:18.95 to the union directors of education 00:01:18.98\00:01:21.49 to put a secular science textbook on the kitchen table 00:01:21.52\00:01:26.76 of every Adventist home in Adventist education. 00:01:26.79\00:01:30.26 We really struggled with that decision. 00:01:30.29\00:01:32.99 There were no other Christian textbooks available 00:01:33.02\00:01:36.46 so in faith the directors of education 00:01:36.49\00:01:40.47 and the office of education North American Division 00:01:40.50\00:01:43.39 voted to develop a distinctly Seventh-day Adventist science, 00:01:43.42\00:01:48.35 elementary science series grades one through eight. 00:01:48.38\00:01:53.21 That's just-- that's a pheno-- 00:01:53.24\00:01:55.16 Isn't that's phenomenal? 00:01:55.19\00:01:57.35 I know that when I was growing up, 00:01:57.38\00:02:00.01 I was learning about science 00:02:00.04\00:02:01.31 but it was from a different perspective 00:02:01.34\00:02:03.14 and I was grateful to have Christian parents 00:02:03.17\00:02:05.06 and Christian teachers 00:02:05.09\00:02:06.54 to tell me what the Bible said about creation. 00:02:06.57\00:02:07.99 Amen. 00:02:08.02\00:02:09.54 You have some pictures that you would like to share with us 00:02:09.57\00:02:11.87 that gives us some idea what they're gonna look like. 00:02:11.90\00:02:15.32 Yeah, you can see here on the pictures, 00:02:15.35\00:02:17.83 this is the grade one to four. 00:02:17.86\00:02:21.60 On the right you will see all of the scope in sequence. 00:02:21.63\00:02:25.38 We really setout rigorous science 00:02:25.41\00:02:28.52 develop within the worldview of the Adventist church. 00:02:28.55\00:02:31.94 So every grade level has a science, 00:02:31.97\00:02:35.11 a journal as a teacher's edition 00:02:35.14\00:02:38.05 and it has a student edition. 00:02:38.08\00:02:43.35 There's also included with this are e-text books, 00:02:43.38\00:02:47.21 so we began from the very beginning. 00:02:47.24\00:02:49.78 When we designed this curriculum, 00:02:49.81\00:02:52.20 we said that we wanted to have e-text books, 00:02:52.23\00:02:55.20 high technology, rigorous science developed 00:02:55.23\00:02:58.76 for not only our classrooms but for multi-grade classrooms. 00:02:58.80\00:03:04.40 We had a committee that worked on home schooling 00:03:04.43\00:03:07.17 to make sure that these textbooks 00:03:07.20\00:03:08.85 were available for home schools and it was interesting 00:03:08.88\00:03:13.28 because we had to raise about $6 million 00:03:13.31\00:03:16.76 to do this textbook series. 00:03:16.79\00:03:18.71 And the first half million dollars 00:03:18.74\00:03:21.50 came from a publishing company of Catholics, 00:03:21.53\00:03:25.61 that said we can longer put a secular textbook 00:03:25.64\00:03:29.72 on our Catholic kitchen tables. 00:03:29.75\00:03:32.11 And we want to put your Adventist textbook, 00:03:32.14\00:03:35.32 we will give you the first half million dollars 00:03:35.35\00:03:37.94 if we can put your Adventist textbook 00:03:37.97\00:03:40.71 on our Catholic kitchen tables. 00:03:40.74\00:03:42.73 Amen. 00:03:42.76\00:03:43.79 Now we'll take a inside look at layout. 00:03:47.81\00:03:50.30 Yes. 00:03:50.33\00:03:51.36 The next picture, you can see 00:03:51.39\00:03:53.32 that the layouts are very colorful. 00:03:53.35\00:03:55.58 They have scripture, lessons, all the way through the text, 00:03:55.61\00:04:02.49 they are well done, they're-- 00:04:02.52\00:04:05.47 it's an inquiry base science program. 00:04:05.50\00:04:08.16 So it's not a lecture program. 00:04:08.19\00:04:10.16 We actually lead the students through to love science 00:04:10.19\00:04:14.00 and to learn about the Adventist worldview. 00:04:14.03\00:04:17.80 And this covers all of the grades. 00:04:17.83\00:04:19.48 Grades one through eight. Grades one through eight. 00:04:19.51\00:04:20.62 So that's in the next picture. 00:04:20.65\00:04:22.22 Yes, the next picture are the covers 00:04:22.25\00:04:24.53 for all of the textbooks. 00:04:24.56\00:04:26.29 You can see this is the eighth grade textbook 00:04:26.32\00:04:29.11 and all the other textbook covers are there. 00:04:29.14\00:04:31.16 Now interestingly you have a grid 00:04:31.19\00:04:32.55 with all the theories of evolution, so help me. 00:04:32.58\00:04:35.35 This is in the eighth grade textbook. 00:04:35.38\00:04:38.07 We believe that our students need to understand 00:04:38.10\00:04:41.62 the theory of evolution, the theory of evolution 00:04:41.65\00:04:46.38 and so we talk about evolution in our textbooks, 00:04:46.41\00:04:49.07 but we always bring them back to an Adventist worldview. 00:04:49.10\00:04:53.05 So it is very-- we cover it very clearly, 00:04:53.08\00:04:57.60 we talk about evolution and we don't hide the fact 00:04:57.63\00:05:01.08 that many people believe in that. 00:05:01.11\00:05:02.88 And I understand, 00:05:02.91\00:05:04.00 you're actually developing a high school text. 00:05:04.03\00:05:06.32 Right now, we're in the process of developing 00:05:06.35\00:05:09.17 a nine and twelve-- ninth and tenth grade 00:05:09.20\00:05:13.51 biology textbook that would be a By Design, 00:05:13.54\00:05:16.97 Dr. Tim Standish is going to be our editor from GRI, 00:05:17.00\00:05:21.31 and here is the cover that you can see, 00:05:21.34\00:05:23.94 what we're working on for By Design. 00:05:23.97\00:05:26.05 Now for whom will this text be available? 00:05:26.08\00:05:27.92 I already hear that there are Catholic, 00:05:27.95\00:05:30.47 the Catholic denomination is interested, 00:05:30.50\00:05:32.37 obviously for Seventh-day Adventist 00:05:32.40\00:05:33.92 or there are others that might be interested? 00:05:33.95\00:05:35.41 Sure, we make this available, they're e-textbooks, 00:05:35.44\00:05:39.02 the printed textbooks are available 00:05:39.05\00:05:41.47 for home schoolers, 00:05:41.50\00:05:43.15 for Griggs University and International Academy, 00:05:43.18\00:05:46.47 we're partners in this process to make sure that, 00:05:46.50\00:05:50.33 that they have access to the books, 00:05:50.36\00:05:53.74 so it's available to anyone. 00:05:53.77\00:05:55.43 Excellent, excellent. 00:05:55.46\00:05:56.88 And tell me, you know, 00:05:56.91\00:05:58.45 I think back and I see where this is something 00:05:58.48\00:06:00.77 where the time has come for this to happen but why now? 00:06:00.80\00:06:05.31 Well, that's a good question. 00:06:05.34\00:06:07.45 And actually I guess my question is, 00:06:07.48\00:06:10.14 why not 60 years ago? 00:06:10.17\00:06:11.66 I would have loved to have this set of textbooks 00:06:11.69\00:06:14.59 when I went through. 00:06:14.62\00:06:16.53 And I would like to thank Larry for the wonderful vision 00:06:16.56\00:06:20.82 that has pulled this together. 00:06:20.85\00:06:22.19 It's not an easy task to write a textbook. 00:06:22.22\00:06:25.07 I didn't realize that till I had the privilege 00:06:25.10\00:06:27.79 of having a very small part in it, 00:06:27.82\00:06:30.67 but there has been many resources from a publisher 00:06:30.70\00:06:35.37 that's capable of handling textbooks to people 00:06:35.40\00:06:38.55 that know what's required for every stage, 00:06:38.58\00:06:40.72 so that the textbook will pass 00:06:40.75\00:06:42.12 all the requirements to scholars, 00:06:42.15\00:06:45.94 to Adventist scholars, to Adventist worldview, 00:06:45.97\00:06:48.79 Adventist philosophy and theology, 00:06:48.82\00:06:52.31 as well as testing it on various levels 00:06:52.34\00:06:54.94 and getting input from teachers 00:06:54.97\00:06:56.58 and finally revising again based upon that. 00:06:56.61\00:06:59.30 So it's a huge task and, Larry, I appreciate it. 00:06:59.33\00:07:02.49 And to connect the dots for us. 00:07:02.52\00:07:04.57 Why is it important for us 00:07:04.60\00:07:06.36 to teach our children about creation? 00:07:06.39\00:07:08.66 Well, you know, the theory of evolution 00:07:08.69\00:07:12.11 is the contemporary God of our society. 00:07:12.14\00:07:15.01 And it really denies the role of the Bible 00:07:15.04\00:07:19.94 in understanding the world. 00:07:19.97\00:07:22.17 Most of evolution actually denies the existence of God, 00:07:22.20\00:07:26.22 and where it does accept the existence of God, 00:07:26.25\00:07:30.04 it dramatically reinterprets God 00:07:30.07\00:07:32.69 from the biblical perspective. 00:07:32.72\00:07:34.94 But evolution is a way of looking at the universe, 00:07:34.97\00:07:38.69 a way of looking at the world, way of understanding ourselves, 00:07:38.72\00:07:42.22 it's made it into almost every discipline, 00:07:42.25\00:07:45.40 sociology, psychology, business, education, 00:07:45.43\00:07:50.16 all the sciences, and so on and so forth 00:07:50.19\00:07:53.04 and so basically when our children are taught evolution 00:07:53.07\00:07:57.00 or theistic evolution, they're taught a worldview 00:07:57.03\00:08:00.18 that is completely foreign to the Bible. 00:08:00.21\00:08:05.71 And I think probably the most tragic thing 00:08:05.74\00:08:09.61 is they're not taught about the God of the love 00:08:09.64\00:08:13.32 but God of love of the Bible 00:08:13.35\00:08:15.08 and given the opportunity to enter 00:08:15.11\00:08:17.28 a personal relationship with Him. 00:08:17.32\00:08:19.54 Gentlemen, thank you so much. 00:08:19.57\00:08:20.81 We are thrilled about this project 00:08:20.84\00:08:23.16 and happened to be in partnership to support it. 00:08:23.19\00:08:25.47 Thank you very much. Thank you very much. 00:08:25.50\00:08:28.07 And now we'll have a very inspiring report 00:08:28.10\00:08:31.67 about our New Beginnings DVD Project. 00:08:31.70\00:08:34.83 Thank you, Debbie. 00:08:34.86\00:08:35.90 You know today, Grand Rapids is a very historical spot 00:08:35.93\00:08:39.92 because brothers and sisters, 00:08:39.95\00:08:41.89 14 years ago we're in Grand Rapids 00:08:41.92\00:08:44.02 and we introduced this product, 00:08:44.05\00:08:45.63 this program called the New Beginnings DVD Project 00:08:45.66\00:08:48.53 and it was right here. 00:08:48.56\00:08:49.60 And because of your generosity and support, 00:08:49.63\00:08:51.90 we could tell stories, 00:08:51.93\00:08:53.55 Norman, I could spend the whole convention telling stories 00:08:53.77\00:08:56.35 about what has happened with this program 00:08:56.38\00:08:59.29 through the last 14 years. 00:08:59.32\00:09:00.67 But today we're only gonna talk about two of them. 00:09:00.70\00:09:02.79 And, Norm, what has happened 00:09:02.82\00:09:04.28 with DVD Project since we started? 00:09:04.31\00:09:06.27 Well, I believe that thousands of training sessions 00:09:06.30\00:09:12.27 have been held, hundreds of thousands have been trained 00:09:12.30\00:09:14.88 and millions have been impacted for the gospel. 00:09:14.91\00:09:17.16 Amen. 00:09:17.19\00:09:18.22 We're gonna talk about Angola first, last year-- 00:09:18.25\00:09:20.48 Did you all hear that? 00:09:20.51\00:09:21.97 There is been millions of people 00:09:22.01\00:09:23.17 that have heard this gospel through this program. 00:09:23.20\00:09:25.54 Millions, I tell you we're so blessed. 00:09:25.57\00:09:29.00 Last year, Angola was the featured target country 00:09:29.03\00:09:32.98 in the South African Indian Ocean Division for evangelism. 00:09:33.01\00:09:36.55 Every pastor, every lay evangelist, 00:09:36.58\00:09:38.89 every church worker was asked to go to Angola 00:09:38.92\00:09:42.24 and hold the meeting. 00:09:42.27\00:09:43.37 We have brethren here from Angola. 00:09:43.40\00:09:45.01 Can you wave to us today? 00:09:45.04\00:09:46.63 There are approximately 60 Angolans over here, 00:09:46.66\00:09:49.36 I see the hands. 00:09:49.39\00:09:51.03 They also invited international ministries. 00:09:55.98\00:09:58.52 They invited Maranatha to build churches. 00:09:58.55\00:10:01.01 They invited Remnant Publications 00:10:01.04\00:10:02.72 that provided 100,000 Bibles. 00:10:02.75\00:10:04.55 They invited Lightbearers Ministries 00:10:04.58\00:10:06.82 that sent them container loads of literature 00:10:06.85\00:10:09.04 and they invited ASI to do DVD training. 00:10:09.07\00:10:13.91 And we responded 00:10:13.94\00:10:14.98 because you have given generously in the past. 00:10:15.01\00:10:17.51 We had money in our fund, 00:10:17.56\00:10:18.86 we were able to provide 4,000 Portuguese language DVDs. 00:10:18.89\00:10:24.32 We were able to provide 4,000 Abundant Living, 00:10:24.35\00:10:27.74 Portuguese language DVDs 00:10:27.77\00:10:30.77 and we printed 8,000 manuals in the Ukraine 00:10:30.80\00:10:34.67 and aero freighted them from Kiev, Ukraine to Luanda. 00:10:34.70\00:10:39.21 This was only possible because we were organized, 00:10:39.24\00:10:43.39 we've done this funding and this program was ongoing 00:10:43.42\00:10:46.49 and we could respond to the invitation. 00:10:46.52\00:10:48.76 Amen. 00:10:48.79\00:10:50.26 If you think about it, we train 4,000 laypeople. 00:10:50.29\00:10:52.67 Now, this is unique 00:10:52.70\00:10:53.77 because the one of the requirements of this 00:10:53.80\00:10:56.03 is that they had to been baptized last year. 00:10:56.06\00:10:59.75 So these were all brand new Adventists 00:10:59.78\00:11:02.01 that we trained in the-- it was a sandy area, 00:11:02.04\00:11:05.41 it was very difficult situation, 00:11:05.44\00:11:07.36 very hot but the laypeople, 00:11:07.39\00:11:09.19 the people that were excited about telling others 00:11:09.22\00:11:11.27 about Jesus came to the meeting and we trained 4,000 laypeople, 00:11:11.30\00:11:15.29 brand new laypeople to share the gospel. 00:11:15.32\00:11:18.82 Number one, the reason why they did that 00:11:18.85\00:11:20.54 is because number one 00:11:20.57\00:11:21.94 is they don't know they can't do it, 00:11:21.97\00:11:23.79 because they are new Adventists. 00:11:23.82\00:11:25.98 Number two is you can't teach what you don't know. 00:11:26.01\00:11:30.46 And number three is that they are-- 00:11:30.49\00:11:32.72 they have non-Adventist friends 00:11:32.75\00:11:35.04 that they can bring to the meetings 00:11:35.07\00:11:36.97 and tell them about Jesus. 00:11:37.00\00:11:38.46 And they are using these players 00:11:38.49\00:11:40.39 and these materials over and over again. 00:11:40.42\00:11:42.01 And I wrote down the number but so far today, 00:11:42.04\00:11:45.32 now this is been since September of last year, 00:11:45.36\00:11:47.79 so hasn't been a full year yet. 00:11:47.82\00:11:50.23 And these new Adventists have brought 00:11:50.26\00:11:53.39 in 5,437 souls into the kingdom. 00:11:53.42\00:11:58.99 Amen. Amen. 00:11:59.02\00:12:00.52 Now when you think about that and you think 00:12:04.88\00:12:07.45 about the opportunity of sharing Jesus 00:12:07.48\00:12:10.07 around the world and you've been 00:12:10.10\00:12:11.74 so blessed and generous to give of your means 00:12:11.77\00:12:15.04 to be able to help fund this project 00:12:15.07\00:12:17.90 and we got more and more exciting things 00:12:17.93\00:12:19.78 that are happening around the world, 00:12:19.81\00:12:21.17 and Angola, we please pray 00:12:21.20\00:12:23.70 for our brothers and sisters in Angola, 00:12:23.73\00:12:25.41 because we know that they have a opportunity 00:12:25.44\00:12:28.50 to tell others about our soon coming Savior. 00:12:28.53\00:12:31.52 Thank you. Sure. 00:12:31.55\00:12:32.80 But now second place that I want to talk about, 00:12:32.83\00:12:34.88 that we want to talk about today is Manila. 00:12:34.91\00:12:38.22 And we had the privilege of going to Manila. 00:12:38.25\00:12:40.52 Now what's special about two of these-- 00:12:40.55\00:12:42.49 these two gentlemen that are before us, 00:12:42.52\00:12:44.61 Benny Moore and Duane Mckey 00:12:44.64\00:12:45.95 as they were from the very beginning, started the idea. 00:12:45.98\00:12:50.04 They were one of the main people that came around, 00:12:50.07\00:12:51.99 came to us, to came up with the idea 00:12:52.02\00:12:54.15 for the New Beginnings of getting laypeople involve 00:12:54.18\00:12:57.07 with sharing Christ in this dramatic way. 00:12:57.10\00:12:59.75 And, Benny, what did we do? 00:12:59.78\00:13:00.81 We went to the Manila, didn't we in this year? 00:13:00.84\00:13:03.32 What did we do? 00:13:03.35\00:13:04.44 Well as I recall, I had a suitcase full of DVDs. 00:13:04.47\00:13:08.88 Yes. 00:13:08.91\00:13:09.94 I think we took 2,000 DVDs to be used in training. 00:13:09.97\00:13:13.34 There is something I've learned in working 00:13:13.38\00:13:14.96 in evangelism through the years and that is that empty seats 00:13:14.99\00:13:18.39 don't respond too well to the gospel. 00:13:18.42\00:13:19.98 Amen. 00:13:20.01\00:13:21.05 And the only way the seats can be full 00:13:21.08\00:13:23.26 is when our members are involved 00:13:23.29\00:13:25.44 and bring their friends and family. 00:13:25.47\00:13:26.72 Amen. 00:13:26.75\00:13:27.78 And so with the DVD training, 00:13:27.81\00:13:29.80 we were able to help give them tools 00:13:29.83\00:13:32.79 that they could use and actually beginning 00:13:32.82\00:13:35.68 the study process with their friends and family. 00:13:35.71\00:13:37.63 Amen. 00:13:37.66\00:13:38.69 And then bring them to the meetings. 00:13:38.72\00:13:40.19 And it really made the success for the meetings. 00:13:40.22\00:13:42.85 And, Duane, what happened after that? 00:13:42.88\00:13:45.12 Absolutely exciting. 00:13:45.15\00:13:46.25 It was back, just in May we were there. 00:13:46.28\00:13:49.77 That's right. This May, that's right. 00:13:49.80\00:13:51.85 We had almost-- well, you tell us later, 00:13:51.88\00:13:54.73 Elder Wilson said how many baptisms? 00:13:54.76\00:13:56.45 But can you imagine a swimming pool 00:13:56.48\00:13:57.92 with thousands of people being baptized. 00:13:57.95\00:13:59.57 We had ASI people there, 00:13:59.60\00:14:01.17 we had-- we had Adventist World Radio. 00:14:01.20\00:14:04.01 We had 3ABN. That's right. 00:14:04.04\00:14:07.10 And the North American Division president, 00:14:07.13\00:14:09.06 a secretary Elder Wilson, he had the major meeting. 00:14:09.09\00:14:11.65 It was thrilling, 75 meetings in all. 00:14:11.68\00:14:13.98 Amen. Amen. 00:14:14.01\00:14:15.37 The youngest speaker? 00:14:15.40\00:14:16.43 The younger speaker was 16 and the oldest. 00:14:16.46\00:14:18.11 I think was 85, is that right? Seventy five. 00:14:18.14\00:14:20.58 Seventy five. Seventy five that is great. 00:14:20.61\00:14:23.74 And tell us the results of what happened after that? 00:14:23.77\00:14:27.46 Well, by the end of the meetings May 17, 00:14:27.49\00:14:32.09 there were 9,558 baptisms. 00:14:32.12\00:14:36.50 Amen. 00:14:36.53\00:14:37.58 But soon after that because of the follow ups, 00:14:37.61\00:14:41.40 it went past 10,000. 00:14:41.43\00:14:43.31 Amen. 00:14:43.34\00:14:44.37 So we're very thankful for the Lord's guidance 00:14:44.40\00:14:46.81 and certainly we are thankful to you, 00:14:46.84\00:14:49.45 ASI, for the help that you have given us 00:14:49.48\00:14:51.72 and on behalf of North Pacific Union Conference, 00:14:51.75\00:14:54.39 please allow me to express this to you. 00:14:54.42\00:14:56.68 Say also thank you to ShareHim to all of you 00:14:56.71\00:14:59.45 and also yes to Elder Wilson for coming over 00:14:59.48\00:15:03.61 and being our main speaker there. 00:15:03.64\00:15:05.06 Thank you. 00:15:05.09\00:15:06.15 Thank you very much. Thank you very much. 00:15:06.18\00:15:07.35 You know, it's amazing how that when we take our ministries, 00:15:07.38\00:15:10.34 when we work together what happens? 00:15:10.37\00:15:12.44 The Lord never adds, 00:15:12.48\00:15:13.92 He multiplies when we work together for Him. 00:15:13.95\00:15:16.84 And that's what so exciting about 00:15:16.88\00:15:18.54 being in these churches by working together, 00:15:18.57\00:15:20.97 all bringing, all these ministries together. 00:15:21.00\00:15:23.39 We're able to do way more than we could ever do by ourselves. 00:15:23.42\00:15:26.93 Thank you, gentlemen for your contribution 00:15:26.96\00:15:29.42 and it's exciting to see what the Lord is doing. 00:15:29.45\00:15:33.96 Shall we mention about Harare, Zimbabwe? 00:15:33.99\00:15:35.78 Oh, please, real quick. Yes, oh, yeah, please. 00:15:35.81\00:15:37.35 Yes. I need 30 young people. 00:15:51.62\00:15:52.71 I need another 70 preachers from here. 00:15:52.74\00:15:55.71 This group of people could come for 70. 00:15:55.74\00:15:58.12 You know, Denzel, if you only deal 00:15:58.15\00:16:00.66 with the gifts of God has given you. 00:16:00.69\00:16:03.66 You don't really need God's blessings 00:16:03.69\00:16:05.59 but if you get out of the boat, 00:16:05.62\00:16:07.51 like Peter and you start to sink, 00:16:07.54\00:16:09.19 when you're preaching the evangelistic series, 00:16:09.22\00:16:11.11 you need God's blessings. 00:16:11.14\00:16:12.26 If you want to experience a special experience, 00:16:12.29\00:16:13.84 come and preach in Harare, Zimbabwe. 00:16:13.87\00:16:14.93 Amen. 00:16:14.96\00:16:16.09 So those of you that would love to go to Harare, 00:16:16.12\00:16:17.77 please see Duane and we would love to have you come 00:16:17.80\00:16:19.90 and participate in the joy of telling others about Jesus. 00:16:19.93\00:16:23.43 But you can also do it in your own home as well. 00:16:23.46\00:16:25.56 You don't have to go to Harare 00:16:25.60\00:16:27.31 but we'd love for you to come as well. 00:16:27.34\00:16:29.23 Thank you very much. 00:16:29.26\00:16:31.10 Now one of the-- one of the advantages 00:16:31.13\00:16:33.40 of being in ASI and being involved in leadership 00:16:33.43\00:16:36.73 is a fact of admiring people 00:16:36.76\00:16:38.42 that really that inspire us to lead. 00:16:38.45\00:16:41.83 And I'm just so blessed to have Elder Wilson here, 00:16:41.86\00:16:44.48 who has not only-- he's so busy 00:16:44.51\00:16:46.42 but he's actually taking his own time 00:16:46.45\00:16:48.47 and holding evangelistic meetings himself. 00:16:48.50\00:16:51.22 And, Elder Wilson, thank you for your leadership 00:16:51.25\00:16:54.28 and the inspiration that you are giving us 00:16:54.31\00:16:56.24 to do our part to hasten the Lord's return. 00:16:56.27\00:16:59.00 Thank you. 00:16:59.03\00:17:01.22 I just want to praise God 00:17:01.25\00:17:02.86 for the incredible evangelistic emphasis 00:17:02.89\00:17:06.86 that ASI has in everything that they do. 00:17:06.89\00:17:11.66 Thank you for your personal involvement 00:17:11.69\00:17:13.98 and thank you for your corporate attention. 00:17:14.01\00:17:18.21 Everything from Youth for Jesus, 00:17:18.24\00:17:22.75 last night we saw incredible display of that 00:17:22.78\00:17:25.73 of what's happened here in Grand Rapids 00:17:25.76\00:17:28.72 to the one day church, to evangelistic activities 00:17:28.75\00:17:32.69 all over this world 00:17:32.72\00:17:34.32 and what you've just heard about. 00:17:34.35\00:17:36.40 This exhibit hall is filled with people 00:17:36.43\00:17:39.13 who have evangelism as a passion. 00:17:39.16\00:17:44.42 One of those aspects 00:17:44.45\00:17:46.48 that ASI has been very heavily involved with an-- 00:17:46.51\00:17:50.24 in which they have helped the 2014 00:17:50.27\00:17:56.56 Hope Manila iCare evangelistic effort, 00:17:56.59\00:18:01.98 which covered scores and scores of locations 00:18:02.01\00:18:06.57 is the New Beginnings Bible studies 00:18:06.60\00:18:10.62 and evangelistic outreach. 00:18:10.65\00:18:12.99 It was a tremendous blessing to this enormous outreach 00:18:13.02\00:18:18.56 to the Greater Manila Area. 00:18:18.59\00:18:21.12 And I want to thank ASI, thank Denzel, 00:18:21.15\00:18:24.77 thank so many others who personally invested 00:18:24.80\00:18:28.47 time and effort into laying an incredible foundation 00:18:28.50\00:18:33.14 for the reaping that took place in Manila. 00:18:33.17\00:18:38.07 Without the involvement of our laypeople, 00:18:38.10\00:18:42.63 our church members involved in carefully sowing the seed, 00:18:42.66\00:18:48.18 public evangelism would reap hardly anything. 00:18:48.21\00:18:53.05 But it is the combined effort of everyone working together 00:18:53.08\00:18:56.78 including the tremendous outreach of New Beginnings. 00:18:56.81\00:19:01.34 And we're looking forward to the same thing 00:19:01.37\00:19:03.50 happening in Harare, Zimbabwe as has been mentioned 00:19:03.53\00:19:07.13 and it can happen everywhere. 00:19:07.16\00:19:10.06 Don't just rely on those who are publicly involved, 00:19:10.09\00:19:15.31 be involved with evangelism on a personally basis. 00:19:15.34\00:19:19.59 God will bless you for it. 00:19:19.62\00:19:21.59 Its part of God's great plan for the loud cry, 00:19:21.62\00:19:25.44 the latter rain is coming, be a part of God's great work 00:19:25.47\00:19:30.89 as we look forward to Jesus soon coming. 00:19:30.92\00:19:34.87 And now we have a very interesting interview 00:19:38.92\00:19:43.76 about a project 00:19:43.79\00:19:45.63 the Holbrook Seventh-day Adventist Indian School. 00:19:45.66\00:19:49.47 And with me here at the podium is Jovannah Poor Bear-Adams. 00:19:49.50\00:19:54.22 She is the vice principal and the principal Pedro Ojeda. 00:19:54.25\00:19:59.61 And I want to start first, Jovannah, 00:19:59.64\00:20:03.18 to have you share a little bit 00:20:03.21\00:20:04.42 of what you were sharing with me 00:20:04.45\00:20:06.30 about your childhood and teen experience? 00:20:06.33\00:20:08.95 All right. 00:20:08.98\00:20:10.12 Well, I'm in Oglala Lakota Sioux, 00:20:10.15\00:20:12.33 from the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. 00:20:12.36\00:20:16.18 And with that comes a lot of beauty, 00:20:16.21\00:20:18.89 a lot of culture and a lot of pain. 00:20:18.92\00:20:25.03 Before I went into my teen years 00:20:25.06\00:20:29.81 'cause you said childhood and teen, 00:20:29.84\00:20:32.33 I was sexually abused by my step dad for two years 00:20:32.36\00:20:36.65 before I had the courage to tell my mom. 00:20:36.68\00:20:38.85 And the reason I was afraid to tell her 00:20:38.88\00:20:40.65 was because I was afraid she was gonna be mad at me. 00:20:40.68\00:20:43.35 I know she was on her-- 00:20:43.38\00:20:44.45 she had been married three times right now 00:20:44.48\00:20:46.23 and my step dad. 00:20:46.26\00:20:48.39 When we-- when I finally 00:20:48.42\00:20:49.71 had the courage to tell, 00:20:49.74\00:20:51.66 we went to court and they-- 00:20:51.69\00:20:54.14 we got a restraining order out of it 00:20:54.17\00:20:56.01 and that's the most that happened with it. 00:20:56.04\00:21:00.45 During that time I was raped by one of my cousins, 00:21:00.48\00:21:04.08 you know, when he was supposed 00:21:04.11\00:21:05.14 to be watching us at our house. 00:21:05.17\00:21:07.22 The first time I had alcohol, 00:21:07.25\00:21:09.76 I was about six or seven years old. 00:21:09.79\00:21:11.87 The first time I had a cigarette 00:21:11.90\00:21:13.16 was around the same time. 00:21:13.19\00:21:17.20 When after my mom had divorced my step dad, 00:21:17.23\00:21:20.08 she left us at my grandma's house 00:21:20.11\00:21:21.94 and she abandoned us there and moved to the city. 00:21:21.97\00:21:24.60 And it was at my grandma's house 00:21:24.63\00:21:26.96 where I experienced 00:21:26.99\00:21:29.25 what it felt like to really be hungry. 00:21:29.28\00:21:32.68 They were times, my grandma was bipolar, 00:21:32.71\00:21:36.53 she has diabetes and she was almost blind. 00:21:36.56\00:21:40.79 So she-- 00:21:40.82\00:21:41.85 we tried to take care of her in her wheelchair, 00:21:41.88\00:21:44.43 cleaning her feet and we lived off a food stamps. 00:21:44.46\00:21:48.98 And something about the food stamps 00:21:49.01\00:21:50.61 'cause you're thinking you know, 00:21:50.64\00:21:51.99 you got taking care of-- you got food stamps. 00:21:52.02\00:21:54.26 But the way that we shopped, we bought Doritos, 00:21:54.29\00:21:58.87 soda we drank soda like it was water. 00:21:58.90\00:22:01.72 We ate frozen pizzas. 00:22:01.75\00:22:04.92 You know, pork chops, bacon, just junk food. 00:22:04.95\00:22:09.18 And we would eat you know, like we were kings 00:22:09.21\00:22:12.05 for about a week and a half. 00:22:12.08\00:22:14.15 Now through this whole childhood experience, 00:22:14.18\00:22:16.70 I get the pictures just very difficult 00:22:16.73\00:22:19.38 and you didn't have a lot of positive family support 00:22:19.41\00:22:22.32 or role models. 00:22:22.35\00:22:23.52 Then you came to a point in your teen years 00:22:23.55\00:22:25.77 where you decided, you wanted to do something different. 00:22:25.80\00:22:28.13 You thought that you could beat this 00:22:28.16\00:22:30.36 and be someone different. 00:22:30.39\00:22:32.55 You know, I thought that I was going to be 00:22:32.58\00:22:36.83 different from everybody on the reservation that, 00:22:36.86\00:22:40.00 you know, they think that, you know, we're just drunks. 00:22:40.03\00:22:42.70 You know, the people we lived just off the reservation 00:22:42.73\00:22:45.26 and I thought I'm gonna be different from them. 00:22:45.29\00:22:47.78 But nobody noticed, no one noticed 00:22:47.81\00:22:50.21 that I was trying to be different 00:22:50.24\00:22:51.62 and I was rejected by my friends, 00:22:51.65\00:22:53.71 by people in the town that I lived in just assuming 00:22:53.74\00:22:56.73 that I was like every other, you know, 00:22:56.76\00:22:58.69 person who came off the reservation. 00:22:58.72\00:23:00.86 And I decided I didn't care anymore. 00:23:00.89\00:23:03.49 You know, I-- you think I'm gonna-- 00:23:03.52\00:23:05.64 you think I'm a drunk, I'm gonna be a drunk. 00:23:05.67\00:23:07.87 And I was 14 years old, you know, 13, 14 00:23:07.90\00:23:11.16 and I started drinking more like a lot. 00:23:11.19\00:23:14.55 I started getting high marijuana, 00:23:14.58\00:23:17.58 started smoking, going to parties. 00:23:17.61\00:23:19.45 I dated a different guy every week. 00:23:19.48\00:23:21.95 And my sister told me my younger sister, 00:23:21.98\00:23:25.05 she told me that she hated me. 00:23:25.09\00:23:27.09 And she just wished you know-- that I wasn't-- 00:23:27.12\00:23:29.71 I wouldn't be around her anymore. 00:23:29.74\00:23:31.72 So then what happened? 00:23:31.75\00:23:32.94 Your sister said, I wish you would leave. 00:23:32.97\00:23:34.91 So you left? 00:23:34.94\00:23:36.38 Yeah, I did leave. 00:23:36.41\00:23:38.29 I looked at myself and I became disgusted with who I was. 00:23:38.32\00:23:41.92 You know, I was exactly what I told myself 00:23:41.95\00:23:44.35 I wasn't gonna be. 00:23:44.38\00:23:45.77 And so you got on the truck, 00:23:45.80\00:23:47.31 kind of through an invitation you're going with your friend 00:23:47.34\00:23:49.65 and you ended up at Holbrook. 00:23:49.68\00:23:51.96 So tell us now what happened at Holbrook 00:23:51.99\00:23:54.34 that started to turn this around? 00:23:54.37\00:23:57.53 I had a family there, 00:23:57.56\00:23:59.43 I had people at Holbrook Indian school who, 00:23:59.46\00:24:03.59 they didn't even know me 00:24:03.62\00:24:04.93 and they got me birthday presents, 00:24:04.96\00:24:07.30 they took me on their family vacations over home leave 00:24:07.33\00:24:11.45 because I couldn't have go back home. 00:24:11.48\00:24:13.36 I knew Christ and I you know, I didn't want to know Christ 00:24:13.39\00:24:18.16 but I started to know Christ 00:24:18.19\00:24:19.74 like I didn't understand any kind of love to be. 00:24:19.77\00:24:24.68 That's phenomenal. That's wonderful. 00:24:24.71\00:24:26.26 Now you did that 00:24:26.29\00:24:28.53 and obviously now you're vice principle at Holbrook, 00:24:28.56\00:24:32.88 so tell me how that happened? 00:24:32.91\00:24:37.13 Well, I went to Union College and you know, 00:24:37.16\00:24:41.15 I wanted to make more, 00:24:41.18\00:24:42.26 I knew that I was going to help native American people, 00:24:42.29\00:24:45.71 I knew that you know, the people who-- 00:24:45.74\00:24:48.70 the stuff that I went through God wouldn't have allowed it, 00:24:48.73\00:24:51.05 unless He was gonna make me strong enough 00:24:51.08\00:24:53.46 to be able to help other people like me. 00:24:53.49\00:24:56.05 And so I went to Union College, 00:24:56.08\00:24:57.96 got my degree in English education 00:24:57.99\00:24:59.85 and that wasn't easy, 00:24:59.88\00:25:01.37 you know that wasn't an easy thing to do. 00:25:01.40\00:25:03.27 I struggled through college. 00:25:03.30\00:25:04.90 I struggled, my grandma died, my sister became homeless 00:25:04.93\00:25:07.99 and I wanted to go back and be with her. 00:25:08.02\00:25:10.36 But I fought through college and I stayed and you know, 00:25:10.39\00:25:14.87 I had a job offer in Lincoln, Nebraska 00:25:14.90\00:25:17.97 to be able to start working there immediately afterward 00:25:18.00\00:25:21.24 but I told them, I said, 00:25:21.27\00:25:22.56 if Holbrook will have me that's where I'm going first. 00:25:22.59\00:25:24.79 Amen. Amen. 00:25:24.82\00:25:26.59 So Holbrook saved you of sorts and you wanted to go back 00:25:26.62\00:25:31.35 and give back so that you could help save others. 00:25:31.38\00:25:33.13 Absolutely. 00:25:33.16\00:25:34.19 Amen. 00:25:34.22\00:25:35.38 Pedro, I want to ask you is Jovannah's experience 00:25:35.41\00:25:40.34 different from the kids that come to Holbrook? 00:25:40.37\00:25:43.82 Well, thanks for asking that question, Debbie, 00:25:43.85\00:25:46.33 and the unfortunate answer is, no. 00:25:46.36\00:25:49.99 Many of our students go through similar circumstances. 00:25:50.02\00:25:54.65 And what is Holbrook doing to address 00:25:54.68\00:25:57.93 that issue with the kids? 00:25:57.96\00:26:00.29 We're doing everything that we can 00:26:00.32\00:26:02.43 but that sounds really general, 00:26:02.46\00:26:05.36 program that we started a year ago 00:26:05.39\00:26:07.04 is called the New Year Health Initiative. 00:26:07.07\00:26:10.23 New stands for nutrition, exercise and wellness 00:26:10.26\00:26:14.38 and it covers the whole child. 00:26:14.41\00:26:16.92 Wellness includes counseling. 00:26:16.95\00:26:19.07 We're setting out 00:26:19.10\00:26:20.13 the quality counseling program at our school. 00:26:20.16\00:26:23.13 And one of the particular 00:26:23.16\00:26:28.82 aspects of this program 00:26:28.85\00:26:30.47 is what we called our garden-to-plate program. 00:26:30.50\00:26:34.06 And for that we need to restart our agricultural program, 00:26:34.09\00:26:38.68 our greenhouses and our garden. 00:26:38.71\00:26:41.01 They're in a little bit of disrepair 00:26:41.04\00:26:42.90 because they haven't been used in a few years. 00:26:42.93\00:26:45.31 And so we need help with that. 00:26:45.34\00:26:47.80 And that's where ASI through the offering 00:26:47.83\00:26:50.04 will provide some assistance for this program. 00:26:50.07\00:26:52.07 Very much so. Okay. 00:26:52.10\00:26:53.86 And tell me why is this program so essential to the students? 00:26:53.89\00:26:58.52 It is essential because it deals 00:26:58.55\00:27:01.31 with the basic needs that students have. 00:27:01.34\00:27:05.52 Without those basic needs been met Debbie, 00:27:05.55\00:27:09.86 our students cannot function, especially academically 00:27:09.89\00:27:14.39 and the public is figuring this out. 00:27:14.42\00:27:17.63 If you read the articles by ASCD and CDC 00:27:17.66\00:27:21.20 they're figuring this out now. 00:27:21.23\00:27:23.40 I want to ask, Jovannah, 00:27:23.43\00:27:24.98 if there is one thing that you want to tell 00:27:25.01\00:27:27.68 the ASI audience that you want them 00:27:27.71\00:27:29.62 to know about students at Holbrook 00:27:29.65\00:27:32.41 and how they can help or-- 00:27:32.44\00:27:34.55 what would you want to say to them? 00:27:34.58\00:27:36.44 All right, hello, ASI. 00:27:36.47\00:27:39.47 One thing that I would want you to know is I've heard, 00:27:39.50\00:27:42.18 I've heard a lot of controversy about giving to a place 00:27:42.21\00:27:46.24 like Holbrook Indian School. 00:27:46.27\00:27:47.73 People who come from this kind of poverty, 00:27:47.76\00:27:50.09 this kind of abuse that even though we're giving to this, 00:27:50.12\00:27:53.88 they come to our school, it's not making a difference. 00:27:53.91\00:27:57.25 There are kids who leave our school 00:27:57.28\00:27:59.21 and they go back to their lifestyle 00:27:59.24\00:28:00.81 or they go to college and they get called home 00:28:00.84\00:28:02.82 and they actually go home 00:28:02.85\00:28:04.17 and they don't go back to school. 00:28:04.20\00:28:06.27 But every now and then and there is somebody 00:28:06.30\00:28:09.66 who comes out of it, there is somebody like me 00:28:09.69\00:28:13.03 who comes out of it and they go back 00:28:13.06\00:28:15.53 and they help people and there is more 00:28:15.56\00:28:18.25 and that I see kids in our school right now 00:28:18.28\00:28:21.69 who are going to do that, I just know it. 00:28:21.72\00:28:24.98 And how much is one life worth? 00:28:25.01\00:28:29.03 Thank you very much, Jovannah. 00:28:29.06\00:28:32.01 Now we have a project that we're familiar 00:28:32.04\00:28:36.37 with the One-Day Church project. 00:28:36.40\00:28:39.91 Thank you. 00:28:39.94\00:28:41.02 And we want you to take in the information 00:28:43.20\00:28:46.30 to understand how One-Day Church 00:28:46.33\00:28:48.20 is actually helping children just like Jovannah. 00:28:48.23\00:28:52.76 No kids. 00:28:52.79\00:28:55.32 Good morning, ASI. 00:28:55.35\00:28:56.96 Good morning. 00:28:56.99\00:28:58.88 You know, when I think of ASI, 00:28:58.91\00:29:01.32 I think you make the difference-- 00:29:01.35\00:29:04.72 that ASI makes such a difference here. 00:29:04.75\00:29:08.02 I think back just on a few projects 00:29:08.05\00:29:10.41 and we had big projects, small projects. 00:29:10.44\00:29:13.73 I remember the picture rolls, 00:29:13.76\00:29:15.76 120,000 picture rolls around the world. 00:29:15.79\00:29:21.23 And you know as I go out into some of the villages, 00:29:21.26\00:29:24.13 I see them, they have around their neck 00:29:24.16\00:29:26.92 and they're preaching with them 00:29:26.95\00:29:28.12 and they're just as good today 00:29:28.15\00:29:29.81 as they were when we send them out. 00:29:29.84\00:29:31.92 It's incredible. 00:29:31.95\00:29:33.42 I think of Myanmar, Burma, 00:29:33.45\00:29:35.54 365 churches and schools in one year. 00:29:35.57\00:29:40.02 And I think of roofs over Africa. 00:29:40.05\00:29:42.26 You remember we had 00:29:42.29\00:29:43.32 the building over here to our left, 00:29:43.35\00:29:47.11 and sat there all week with no roof. 00:29:47.14\00:29:49.83 Then we had the roof program 00:29:49.86\00:29:51.61 and the roof came down and sat on there. 00:29:51.64\00:29:55.59 As a result 11,000 roofs were put 00:29:55.62\00:29:59.98 on large and small churches through out Africa. 00:30:00.08\00:30:03.06 ASI, that's making a difference. 00:30:03.09\00:30:05.21 But then I think of this special place, 00:30:05.24\00:30:09.09 Grand Rapids, 14 years ago. 00:30:09.12\00:30:13.34 Evangelism in India had just started. 00:30:13.37\00:30:16.76 Now since then as a result of ASI 00:30:16.79\00:30:19.85 and Maranatha it's been over 00:30:19.88\00:30:21.40 one million members in India, the growth. 00:30:21.43\00:30:25.60 Yes, ASI, you make a difference, 00:30:25.63\00:30:27.71 but I think of one special little girl, 00:30:27.74\00:30:31.11 some of you old timers remember Laxmi, 00:30:31.14\00:30:34.53 the little girl that we carried out on the stage, 00:30:34.56\00:30:37.37 the girl that our effort would lay on her stomach 00:30:37.40\00:30:40.36 and pedal her bike there, Laxmi now has grown. 00:30:40.39\00:30:44.81 She is been rehabilitated somewhat, 00:30:44.84\00:30:47.28 and she walks with sticks. 00:30:47.31\00:30:49.28 She is been through Spicer College 00:30:49.31\00:30:51.38 and she is now a teacher. 00:30:51.41\00:30:53.54 Wow, what a wonderful thing. 00:30:53.57\00:30:56.14 Think how heaven will be to Laxmi 00:31:01.57\00:31:04.74 when she can walk with Jesus. 00:31:04.77\00:31:08.15 Now I've had the opportunity to be involved 00:31:08.18\00:31:10.26 with many churches all over the world. 00:31:10.29\00:31:15.67 Work in many, many countries and many of these countries, 00:31:15.70\00:31:19.33 I have worked with Maranatha and self supporting ministry. 00:31:19.36\00:31:23.75 Then we sold our business 00:31:23.78\00:31:26.74 and I thought well, maybe retirement. 00:31:26.77\00:31:31.78 Well, that lasted about a day and half, 00:31:31.81\00:31:35.87 it's not for me I can tell you that. 00:31:35.90\00:31:39.26 And I just felt there is more God wanted me to do, 00:31:39.29\00:31:44.09 He had something big in mind 00:31:44.12\00:31:48.06 and I wasn't-- I just wasn't comfortable. 00:31:48.09\00:31:53.51 Now at the same time, we had explosive growth in the church. 00:31:53.54\00:31:57.87 The church was growing several a day. 00:31:57.90\00:32:02.15 And one weekend Maranatha 00:32:02.18\00:32:04.07 was at our church having a weekend rally. 00:32:04.10\00:32:09.25 It was about 11 o'clock at night, 00:32:09.28\00:32:11.22 it's dark and then Don Noble, 00:32:11.25\00:32:12.45 and I remember he was sitting on our couch, 00:32:12.48\00:32:15.25 he put his head in his hands and he says, 00:32:15.28\00:32:17.31 Garwin, I don't know what we're gonna do. 00:32:17.34\00:32:19.74 We had these thousands and thousands of requests 00:32:19.77\00:32:23.57 and we just can't take care of them, 00:32:23.60\00:32:25.30 we can't build them fasten enough, it's growing faster. 00:32:25.33\00:32:29.85 And I had a thought and I believe 00:32:29.88\00:32:32.91 the One-Day Church was God ordained. 00:32:32.94\00:32:35.56 I said, Don, have you ever thought about building it 00:32:35.59\00:32:39.27 from the roof down? 00:32:39.30\00:32:41.46 Now with the roofs over Africa, 00:32:41.49\00:32:43.08 they put the sides up and then we roofed it. 00:32:43.11\00:32:45.78 But the weather and so forth, 00:32:45.81\00:32:47.55 it was, it holds some challenges. 00:32:47.58\00:32:50.81 And that's how the One-Day Church started. 00:32:50.84\00:32:54.11 Monday morning we went to work 00:32:54.14\00:32:55.65 with our first One-Day Church and it's improved. 00:32:55.68\00:32:58.62 Since then we have built dormitories, 00:32:58.65\00:33:00.32 greenhouses, housing units, 00:33:00.35\00:33:02.46 complete hospital complex at Chad, 00:33:02.49\00:33:09.07 and the list goes on. 00:33:09.10\00:33:11.58 We built and sent containers to Zimbabwe, 00:33:11.61\00:33:14.31 Mozambique, Malawi, Ghana well, 00:33:14.34\00:33:17.13 that it's a big long list most of the world. 00:33:17.16\00:33:20.98 Now here is the important thing ASI, 00:33:21.01\00:33:23.58 to date we have manufactured 5,700 One-Day Church 00:33:23.61\00:33:29.73 and over one million of your brothers and sisters 00:33:29.76\00:33:33.11 are meeting today in a one day structure. 00:33:33.14\00:33:35.90 ASI, that's making a difference. 00:33:35.93\00:33:39.05 That's making a difference. 00:33:39.08\00:33:41.01 Now we can manufacture them, 00:33:44.31\00:33:45.69 but we need the supporting ministries to erect them. 00:33:45.72\00:33:50.53 And that is where the ultimate example of ASI 00:33:50.56\00:33:56.03 and self supporting ministries working together 00:33:56.06\00:33:59.73 in a partnership is the one day program. 00:33:59.76\00:34:03.63 We have many partners 00:34:03.66\00:34:05.82 but two of our partners are here today. 00:34:05.85\00:34:08.59 One, Alan Knowles of Riverside Farms. 00:34:08.62\00:34:11.83 Lot of people know Riverside Farms. 00:34:11.86\00:34:14.75 And Don Noble of Maranatha Volunteers. 00:34:14.78\00:34:18.86 Now I'm gonna ask Alan. 00:34:18.89\00:34:20.49 I've known Alan, we've worked together building churches 00:34:20.52\00:34:24.52 since 1985 I believe, Alan. 00:34:24.55\00:34:27.33 Alan, tell us what is it like 00:34:27.36\00:34:29.15 when you put a One-Day Church in a bush? 00:34:29.18\00:34:31.74 You know, Garwin, I got a phone call 00:34:31.77\00:34:33.98 the other day on Sunday morning. 00:34:34.01\00:34:36.27 Well, Luca Mionde called me, said, 00:34:36.30\00:34:38.08 Mr. Alan, Mr. Alan, we have a problem. 00:34:38.11\00:34:41.64 Well, we were going to camp meeting on Sabbath, 00:34:41.67\00:34:43.83 somebody burnt our grass roof down on our church 00:34:43.86\00:34:47.32 and it knocked the walls down, we were waiting for a roof. 00:34:47.35\00:34:50.26 And I said, Luca, we're gonna have a solution for you. 00:34:50.29\00:34:53.59 And we got-- changed our schedule 00:34:53.62\00:34:55.59 a little bit and we drove in there about 1,000 kilometers 00:34:55.62\00:35:00.26 from Riverside out in a very rural areas 00:35:00.29\00:35:05.07 and it's just amazing to see in the poverty areas 00:35:05.10\00:35:11.43 the energy that was put out to help us build that church. 00:35:11.46\00:35:16.32 On the first picture we have, 00:35:16.35\00:35:19.76 it's a picture of the joy that happens Garwin, 00:35:19.79\00:35:23.84 when we start that building. 00:35:23.87\00:35:25.75 And as we start putting the roof on, 00:35:25.78\00:35:27.77 the ladies put down their cooking sticks, 00:35:27.80\00:35:31.18 put down their pots and they start marching 00:35:31.21\00:35:37.29 and clapping their hands and singing praises, 00:35:37.32\00:35:40.45 praises to their God in heaven 00:35:40.48\00:35:43.16 who has given them a miracle today. 00:35:43.19\00:35:47.31 And at the end of that song, 00:35:47.34\00:35:50.38 they say thank you and they say thank you so loud, 00:35:50.41\00:35:53.28 if you listen carefully, 00:35:53.31\00:35:55.69 I believe it's about three or four times a day, 00:35:55.72\00:35:58.07 Garwin, now that you'll hear a thank you 00:35:58.10\00:36:00.59 from all over the world 00:36:00.62\00:36:02.02 for a One-Day Church that goes up. 00:36:02.05\00:36:04.39 If you listen carefully, 00:36:04.42\00:36:05.75 you'll hear them singing thank you, God. 00:36:05.78\00:36:08.33 Thank you for the brothers and sisters in North America 00:36:08.36\00:36:11.29 who have sacrificed 00:36:11.32\00:36:13.17 that we can have this miracle today. 00:36:13.20\00:36:15.85 And they worship under that permanent roof, 00:36:15.88\00:36:18.57 now probably only one in miles around in their villages. 00:36:18.60\00:36:22.83 And they just want to say thank you to ASI. 00:36:22.86\00:36:26.20 Thank you for that. 00:36:26.23\00:36:27.43 Thank you, Alan. But, folks, there's more. 00:36:27.46\00:36:30.75 Don Noble of Maranatha Volunteers. 00:36:34.30\00:36:37.29 Maranatha Volunteers is known throughout the world 00:36:37.32\00:36:40.65 and Don has been the president for a number of years. 00:36:40.68\00:36:43.45 Don, tell us what's happening. 00:36:43.48\00:36:47.50 You've heard about the Angola DVD. 00:36:47.53\00:36:51.41 Tell us about Angola and the One-Day Church? 00:36:51.44\00:36:54.51 Thank you, Garwin. 00:36:54.54\00:36:55.99 Good morning, ASI. It's great to be here. 00:36:56.02\00:37:00.04 And, you know, the one day church and school 00:37:00.07\00:37:02.96 is working well in many places around the world 00:37:02.99\00:37:05.16 but one place that it's a really, really great fit 00:37:05.19\00:37:08.47 is the country of Angola. 00:37:08.50\00:37:10.39 If you're not familiar with Angola, 00:37:10.42\00:37:12.35 it's a country in Western Africa, 00:37:12.38\00:37:15.15 about 20 million people, Portuguese speaking. 00:37:15.18\00:37:18.17 They are rich in resources, oil, diamonds but unfortunately 00:37:18.20\00:37:23.92 most of the people are extremely poor. 00:37:23.95\00:37:26.38 In fact, I want to show you a picture of where-- 00:37:26.41\00:37:29.38 this is a typical street where your fellow 00:37:29.41\00:37:34.01 Seventh-day Adventist church members walk 00:37:34.04\00:37:36.59 when they go to church. 00:37:36.62\00:37:39.48 Another one that you can see is, 00:37:39.51\00:37:42.21 this is about what you would see 00:37:42.24\00:37:43.56 if you flew in on an airplane into Luanda, the capital. 00:37:43.59\00:37:48.34 It looks like that for miles but it's interesting to me 00:37:48.37\00:37:54.11 to think of 400,000 Seventh-day Adventists baptized right now 00:37:54.14\00:38:00.07 in the county of Luanda out of 20 million members. 00:38:00.10\00:38:05.29 It's good news? 00:38:05.32\00:38:07.31 I got better news. 00:38:07.34\00:38:09.86 How many do you think meet on Sabbath morning 00:38:09.89\00:38:12.13 with 400,000 members? 00:38:12.16\00:38:15.99 Any idea? Less than 400,000? 00:38:16.02\00:38:20.05 One and half million. 00:38:20.08\00:38:22.82 One and half million people meet on Sabbath morning. 00:38:22.85\00:38:26.23 And I want to show you some of the places that they meet, 00:38:30.93\00:38:34.34 just a couple of quick pictures. 00:38:34.37\00:38:37.05 This is one of many pictures that we took, 00:38:37.08\00:38:40.39 here's another one that-- yes, 00:38:40.42\00:38:43.67 that is a church and when you look at that picture, 00:38:43.70\00:38:47.82 you can think about when you're looking 00:38:47.86\00:38:50.74 for a Seventh-day Adventist on Sabbath morning, 00:38:50.77\00:38:52.60 how would you spot one in the city of Luanda? 00:38:52.63\00:38:55.64 What would you think you would look for? 00:38:55.67\00:38:58.79 Carrying a Bible? 00:38:58.82\00:39:01.11 Dressed as good as you could possibly hope for? 00:39:01.14\00:39:04.01 No. 00:39:04.04\00:39:05.43 The thing you look for is an umbrella, 00:39:05.46\00:39:09.63 on a sunny day because that's the roof 00:39:09.66\00:39:12.43 to their church, is an umbrella. 00:39:12.46\00:39:15.27 So when we provide them a church, 00:39:15.30\00:39:17.59 it's very exciting for them. 00:39:17.62\00:39:19.77 In fact, I've a picture of a crew building 00:39:19.80\00:39:23.13 a One-Day Church in Luanda. 00:39:23.16\00:39:24.62 Last week Garwin, 00:39:24.65\00:39:26.51 we just finished 100 churches, One-Day Church. 00:39:26.54\00:39:31.95 Yeah, and some of them are extra long 00:39:31.98\00:39:33.77 and just in the Luanda area. 00:39:33.80\00:39:36.55 So you saw the crowds in the earlier pictures, 00:39:36.58\00:39:40.21 you know that they need churches in that country, 00:39:40.24\00:39:42.86 so it's exciting to be able to part of that. 00:39:42.89\00:39:46.38 Another picture that you actually already saw 00:39:46.41\00:39:49.93 and the reason I wanted to show it again 00:39:49.96\00:39:51.69 is because this particular church 00:39:51.72\00:39:54.76 was finished by the women. 00:39:54.79\00:39:57.52 I don't know where the men were but the women stepped up 00:39:57.55\00:40:01.37 and they actually bought the property, 00:40:01.40\00:40:03.13 went out and bought the blocks and they did the physical work 00:40:03.16\00:40:07.62 and that church is the result of the women in that area 00:40:07.65\00:40:13.42 deciding that they wanted a good place to worship God. 00:40:13.45\00:40:15.86 So praise the Lord for that. 00:40:15.89\00:40:17.46 One of the things that actually came 00:40:22.66\00:40:24.32 a little after the One-Day Church 00:40:24.35\00:40:26.21 is the One-Day School and that has really gone well. 00:40:26.24\00:40:30.82 And here's the place, Angola is the perfect place for it. 00:40:30.85\00:40:34.82 Here's a country that years ago used to have the largest 00:40:34.85\00:40:40.55 and perhaps the best education system in the country. 00:40:40.58\00:40:44.09 Many of the government officials 00:40:44.12\00:40:46.08 currently went to primary school 00:40:46.11\00:40:48.72 in the Adventist system before the war. 00:40:48.75\00:40:50.63 They had 40 years of war in that country 00:40:50.66\00:40:53.54 and it's almost devastated the country 00:40:53.57\00:40:56.00 but those leaders have-- 00:40:56.03\00:40:59.03 now they're looking to Seventh-day Adventists 00:40:59.06\00:41:00.70 to come back and build those campuses again, 00:41:00.73\00:41:02.67 200 campuses were destroyed during the war. 00:41:02.70\00:41:06.53 And now Garwin, I got the final number 00:41:06.56\00:41:08.94 yesterday of the requests 00:41:08.97\00:41:11.24 for actual classrooms, one day classrooms 00:41:11.27\00:41:14.36 in the country of Angola, it's 5,402. 00:41:14.39\00:41:19.87 Yeah, it's real. It's a real big request. 00:41:19.90\00:41:24.67 Today, we're only asking for your help with 200, 00:41:24.70\00:41:28.83 the first 200 and that's quite a few but the first 200 and-- 00:41:28.86\00:41:34.78 Ten thousand kids. 00:41:34.81\00:41:35.97 Yeah, we figure about 50 in a classroom, 00:41:36.00\00:41:39.59 they normally put 70 to 90 00:41:39.62\00:41:41.85 but we're gonna make a little more spacious, 00:41:41.88\00:41:43.93 put 50 in so that's 10,000 young people 00:41:43.96\00:41:49.68 as a result of the offerings this morning, Garwin. 00:41:49.71\00:41:52.38 And if we want to see God's work expand in Angola 00:41:52.41\00:41:55.49 which we do, great place, 00:41:55.52\00:41:57.40 we got to start with Christian education. 00:41:57.43\00:41:59.43 Thank you. 00:41:59.46\00:42:01.01 ASI, you're making a difference. 00:42:01.04\00:42:03.68 Angola, 1,000 churches. 00:42:03.71\00:42:07.18 And, you know, all those churches in Angola, 00:42:07.21\00:42:09.71 they're 27 foot wide 00:42:09.74\00:42:11.39 and they're an extra three bays. 00:42:11.42\00:42:13.68 So these are big churches, these are churches, 00:42:13.71\00:42:16.44 church schools, Christian education, 00:42:16.47\00:42:19.84 the genius of the Seventh-day Adventist church. 00:42:19.87\00:42:24.26 We have 40,000 children 00:42:24.29\00:42:30.38 in One-Day Church schools today. 00:42:30.41\00:42:33.14 Forty thousand, that's making a difference 00:42:33.17\00:42:35.80 and with Angola, that will be 50,000. 00:42:35.83\00:42:39.56 Fifty thousand people or children 00:42:39.59\00:42:42.26 getting Christian education. 00:42:42.29\00:42:44.53 ASI, you make a difference. 00:42:44.56\00:42:46.91 And I would not be here today 00:42:49.63\00:42:51.38 if it wasn't for Christian education. 00:42:51.41\00:42:53.37 I believe in it with all my heart. 00:42:53.40\00:42:57.10 The one day program truly equals souls for eternity. 00:42:57.13\00:43:03.67 One day soon the heavens will open. 00:43:03.70\00:43:06.11 One day soon Jesus will return. 00:43:06.14\00:43:08.52 One day soon thousands and thousands of men, 00:43:08.55\00:43:12.02 women, boys and girls will meet their Savior. 00:43:12.05\00:43:16.91 They will meet their Savior 00:43:16.94\00:43:18.60 because of the One-Day Church and school. 00:43:18.63\00:43:22.16 Thank you. 00:43:22.19\00:43:23.76 And, ASI, aren't we looking forward to that day 00:43:29.86\00:43:33.74 when Jesus will come? 00:43:33.77\00:43:36.87 Throughout this convention, 00:43:36.90\00:43:38.39 we have attempted to bring to you 00:43:38.42\00:43:40.33 and highlight projects from individuals 00:43:40.36\00:43:43.93 and from ministries to let you know 00:43:43.96\00:43:46.56 how we are trying to reach the world for Jesus. 00:43:46.59\00:43:49.93 We so desperately want to go home. 00:43:49.96\00:43:51.80 I was remarking to someone in the back just today 00:43:51.83\00:43:54.56 that when I think back when I was last here 00:43:54.59\00:43:56.56 in Grand Rapids at an ASI Convention, 00:43:56.59\00:43:59.20 that was 14 years ago, 14 years. 00:43:59.23\00:44:03.74 I don't want to be here another 14 years. 00:44:03.77\00:44:07.57 We heard this morning, 00:44:07.60\00:44:09.36 Elder Wilson who said one of the best investments 00:44:09.39\00:44:12.68 we can make is in our young people, in our youth. 00:44:12.71\00:44:17.10 This is the time, this is now. 00:44:17.13\00:44:20.71 We heard this morning about the science books, 00:44:20.74\00:44:24.04 so that we can educate our young people 00:44:24.07\00:44:26.47 about the Christian-- the creation story 00:44:26.50\00:44:29.73 and so they can understand that God is the one 00:44:29.76\00:44:32.26 who created this world. 00:44:32.29\00:44:34.55 We heard from Jovannah that the Holbrook 00:44:34.58\00:44:37.44 Seventh-day Adventist school made a difference in her life. 00:44:37.47\00:44:41.09 We want these schools to make a difference 00:44:41.12\00:44:43.95 in other children's life just like our children. 00:44:43.98\00:44:47.28 The New Beginnings DVD training, 00:44:47.31\00:44:49.69 setting the stage for the difference 00:44:49.72\00:44:51.26 that can be made by training thousands of people 00:44:51.29\00:44:54.50 to take the word to the world. 00:44:54.53\00:44:57.65 Then finally the one day schools 00:44:57.68\00:45:00.85 and the opportunity for us 00:45:00.88\00:45:03.44 to partner with one day so that 10,000 to start, 00:45:03.47\00:45:08.57 10,000 children can learn about Jesus. 00:45:08.60\00:45:11.88 And while look at these children behind me, 00:45:11.91\00:45:14.25 I think about I just look at one of them, 00:45:14.28\00:45:17.73 there is probably about 00:45:17.76\00:45:19.12 100 kids coming up here behind me, 00:45:19.15\00:45:22.00 each one of them representing 100 children in Angola. 00:45:22.03\00:45:28.90 So 10,000 children are represented visually here 00:45:28.93\00:45:33.63 before you and I ask you which of these children 00:45:33.66\00:45:38.07 would you not want to see in heaven. 00:45:38.10\00:45:41.12 Which of the children in Angola do we not want to go there?
