00:31 Welcome back. We're so happy that you could spend the last
00:35 few moments of the Sabbath with us. 00:38 And we're now coming down to our 7 o'clock hour 00:42 and the time when Pastor Dwight Nelson will be 00:46 bringing us another in his series on the cross. 00:49 And this one is entitled Near the Cross: the Burial 00:52 and Resurrection of a Fallen Brother. 00:56 I've got to admit, Jim, and I think you do: 00:58 Dwight is one of my favorite speakers. 01:00 Oh, he's right there at the top. Yeah. 01:02 My son Jim sent me a notice. He said: "Dwight Nelson 01:07 is in my top five. " And I thought that was pretty... 01:11 I was... I said... 'cause Jim knows preachers... 01:14 I was going to ask: are you in his top five? 01:16 Well, he said I was, but... 01:20 But he said: "Of course, Dad, you're number one. " Very good. 01:24 That's politically correct. But he's a very diplomatic boy... 01:26 he really is. 01:28 He is on 3ABN on Sabbath afternoons I think about 1:00. 01:33 1 PM. And you know, we pre-empted him when we 01:36 came from Jerusalem with our Live that time. 01:39 And I was getting e-mails particularly from one fellow 01:44 that gave me the roughest time - I remember - about that. 01:47 And if you're watching - and I hope you are - 01:50 we will try never to do that again. All right? 01:54 'Cause we're going to be coming, by the way, live from Jerusalem 01:58 on November the 23rd. Put it on your calendar. 02:01 It'll be 4 o'clock to 6 PM over there 02:04 which is in the morning over here, so you'll be able 02:08 to pick it up in the morning. 02:09 And by the way, there are brochures here. 02:12 I hope some of you pick them up 02:13 and go with us to Israel 02:16 because we have a good group planning on going. 02:18 And that broadcast will be coming from the Valley of Elah - 02:21 that's right - where David fought Goliath. 02:23 That's right, and where our satellite message goes round 02:27 the world, folks. You see, there's still a battle 02:30 between good and evil going on, and we thank the Lord 02:34 that right in that very valley over 125 satellite dishes 02:39 are putting out the signal 02:41 plus fiber optic cables around the world. 02:45 It's very impressive. It is. I've been there, and some of 02:47 those dishes are 30 meters across... that's almost 100 ft. 02:50 Right... enormous. Incredibly large satellite dishes 02:53 sending the gospel around the world. 02:54 Well, to get to our message for the day, we are so happy 02:57 that our pastor, our friend, has been here with us these days. 03:00 We had to book him last year to get him this year - way back - 03:03 his schedule is so full, but he has been a blessing 03:05 has he not? He certainly has! And we love him dearly. 03:08 Well I'm going to ask you to have our prayer as we 03:11 bow our heads together. Gracious Father, we thank you 03:14 so very much for this sitting together. 03:17 We thank you for the words of life which have been preached 03:20 with power by Pastor Dwight Nelson. 03:24 We ask for him from You 03:28 heaven's very best. 03:31 Use him as an instrument of teaching and righteousness 03:35 this night and give us open and and receptive ears and hearts 03:40 that we may be not just hearers of the Word 03:43 but doers thereof. Because it is in the doing 03:47 that we are made like Christ Jesus. 03:50 Be the honored guest; be the speaker we do pray, 03:53 dear Father, as we thank you in Jesus' name, Amen. 03:58 And what's our music tonight? 03:59 Sandra Entermann is going to be singing No One Knows Me 04:03 Like You. Amen. 04:31 In the beginning I never knew 04:35 just how much I really needed You. 04:39 More than a friend... someone I could talk to... 04:43 You changed me in so many ways. 04:48 Nobody knows me like You. 04:52 You put Your arms around me, You bring me through. 04:56 And there's many times I don't know what to do. 05:00 Though some know me well 05:02 still nobody knows me like You. 05:12 All of my secrets to You I tell. 05:16 You saw each time that I slipped and fell. 05:20 And You know my faults... Yes, You know them well 05:24 but You never turned me away. No, no, no... 05:29 Nobody knows me like You. 05:33 You put your arms around me, You bring me through. 05:37 And there's many times I don't know what to do. 05:41 Though some know me well 05:43 still nobody knows me like You. 05:49 Walking in Your presence is where I want to be. 05:53 You said in Your Word... You said that You would lead me. 05:57 Yes, I love You... 05:59 oh, I really love You. I'll go anywhere 06:03 as long as I know You'll be there. 06:14 All of those nights that I was afraid 06:18 I stood on the promises You have made. 06:22 The way that I act sometimes I am afraid 06:26 but You never turned me away. No, no, no... 06:30 Nobody knows me like You. 06:34 You put Your arms around me, You bring me through. 06:38 And there's many times I don't know what to do. 06:42 Though some know me well 06:44 still nobody knows me like You. 06:48 Nobody knows me... Nobody knows me like You. 06:54 You put Your arms around me, You bring me through. 06:59 And there's many times I don't know what to do. 07:03 Though some know me well 07:05 still nobody knows me like You. 07:11 Though some know me well 07:13 still nobody knows me like You. 07:19 Though some know me well 07:22 still nobody knows me 07:25 like You. 07:35 Amen! 07:40 Thank you, Sandra. 07:42 Nobody knows me like You do, O God. 07:47 What a God... 07:49 because He knows us the way He does and still loves us. 07:52 That's the amazing amazing truth. 07:55 In spite of what He knows. 07:59 Sometimes the Holy Spirit calls an audible. 08:04 You know what that is? 08:05 Yeah. Men are nodding. 08:09 When you change the plan on the spot. 08:13 Comes from football. 08:18 I was doing some reflecting and studying 08:20 and had some time to pray this afternoon... 08:25 late afternoon. 08:27 And the Holy Spirit called an audible... said "I'm changing 08:30 your plans. " 08:33 So I'm going to go with what He's laid on my heart. 08:37 That last piece in this little mini-series? 08:40 You can get it: 08:43 www. pmchurch. tv 08:49 Be a few others there in the archives as well. 08:53 Oswald Chambers was the one who wrote: "When God gives 08:56 a vision you must transact business along that line. " 09:00 I'm in the middle of a 5- week-old story right now, 09:05 and so I'm going to pray with you and then just pick it 09:08 right up where we are at Andrews University 09:11 in the Pioneer Memorial Church as we speak. Let's pray first. 09:16 Oh Father, how true that is. There's nobody that knows us 09:19 like You do and You love us. 09:24 We're not worthy of Calvary's outpouring. 09:31 You have paid an infinite price to win our minds, 09:35 our hearts, our bodies, our all. 09:41 But we cannot forget as the theme of this Camp Meeting 09:45 on the backdrop behind me reminds us: there's not only 09:49 an outpouring that came at Calvary, 09:52 there is to be one more outpouring at the end of time. 09:57 Connect those two outpourings in these few moments together 10:01 and pour out into us we humbly pray. 10:06 In Jesus' name, Amen. 10:12 We just finished a school year at Andrews University. 10:15 A great school year... another busy one. 10:17 And the reality of... I've been on that campus now for 10:21 for 30 years. 10:23 I'm going to tell you very very much upfront 10:27 I love that university. 10:29 I've given my life to it. 10:33 I believe in it. 10:35 If you trace it back you can go Andrews University, 10:38 Emmanuel Missionary College, Battle Creek College. 10:42 It's Battle Creek College in a new location. That's what it is. 10:45 And you know Battle Creek College. 10:48 So it's been an honor - a humbling honor - to serve there 10:51 these past three decades. 10:55 But after 30 years a rest- lessness is bound to stir up 11:01 your mind and your spirit and you're saying: "God, what... 11:05 what else would You like to do? " 11:11 Four weeks ago... Four weeks ago... 11:16 It's a Monday. We've got a big church board meeting that night. 11:19 We've finished our staff meeting and our youth pastor is in 11:21 my office: Micheal Goetz who preached for me today 11:25 at Pioneer. 11:28 I forget what led us into conversation, but he stuck 11:31 his head in the office and we're talking. And somehow 11:33 the conversation turns to "What is God going to do next? " 11:38 "What could God do to raise the bar so high 11:41 that nobody could say: "I have my fingerprints on that. " 11:45 It was Daniel Burnham, the great Chicago architect, 11:49 the World's Fair back at the turn of the century, 11:51 you remember? 1890's the Chicago World's Fair. 11:54 Daniel Burnham who made the statement 11:57 "Make no small plans for they do not contain the magic 12:02 to stir men's souls. " 12:04 When it comes to God, you need a God-sized vision, don't you? 12:10 I mean, come on. We're standing in a ministry 12:13 that was raised up because of a God-sized vision, aren't we? 12:17 Isn't that what this place is about? Amen! 12:21 So Michael and I are talking and he says: "You know, Dwight, 12:25 wouldn't it be something if there was some way we could 12:27 turn this campus into missionaries who are reaching 12:30 the lost right here. And yeah, boy, wouldn't that be. 12:34 Oh good night, it's 20 minutes till the board meeting. " 12:37 He's gone and a split second later there's a 12:40 knock on my door. And in our place the offices are shut 12:43 like Fort Knox 'cause it's 6:40 in the evening. 12:47 And I'm thinking "Who's at the door? " 12:49 So I say: "Yo! " And the door opens 12:52 and in comes a college kid. 12:56 I said: "What's up? " He said: "Pastor, I need to talk 12:59 to you. " I said: "Bad timing... I don't have time. 13:01 I've got a board meeting in 20 minutes and I'm chairing 13:03 the board. " I said: "What are you thinking about? " 13:06 He says: "I've just been walking on this campus thinking 13:09 we need God to do something big at Andrews University. " 13:14 And boom! I'm thinking Michael; I'm thinking 13:16 this kid named Jonathan. 13:19 I said: "What are you thinking? " 13:20 "Well you know what? " he says, "I think we ought to call for 13:21 a day of special prayer on this campus. " 13:24 I said: "Jonathan, we are four days till exam week. 13:28 There's no way we can get the word out. 13:30 Here's what let's do. I want you to find 12 friends, 13:33 twelve of your classmates, twelve of your peers, 13:36 and you band together - the 13 of you - 13:39 and you pray all this summer long that God will do a new 13:44 thing at Andrews University. You just pray for God to do 13:47 what He's already laid the burden on your heart to do. " 13:50 We knelt down and we had prayer. 13:52 I'd just had prayer with Michael. Now Jonathan and I 13:55 are having prayer. He walked out the door... 13:56 it's 10 minutes to board meet- ing. Go to the board meeting. 14:00 For our worship that night we just shot right into this 14:02 conversation. Had a very open board meeting. 14:07 Very candid conversation about life at Pioneer 14:10 and Andrews University. 14:12 Had a season of earnest prayer. 14:19 The next week... Exam week is the week that came next 14:23 and then there's graduation. The next week it's a Monday 14:26 and I'm meeting with one of our campus chaplains 14:30 José Bourget, who's on our staff at Pioneer... a great guy... 14:33 All our pastors are... I'm so lucky. Five of our pastors, our 14:36 senior leaders, are 32 and 33 years of age. 14:39 And it's such an honor to work with a bunch of 14:41 sharp young pastors. 14:46 José and I... because at Andrews University the moment 14:48 the graduation is over you are immediately planning 14:51 the new school year. You have no time to breathe. 14:53 It's just... We've got June, July, and it's here. 14:58 So José and I are talking and we bring in the TV producer. 15:01 Our media director, Nick Wolfer... he comes down. 15:04 I'm thinking: "What can we do that's new? " 15:06 And it's just... You know, you can change the wallpaper 15:10 and the backdrop so many times and it's no longer new. 15:14 And we're all sensing that. 15:17 We're back in my office and José is saying: "You know, Dwight, 15:19 I just had the interview for some student chaplains. 15:21 I'm telling you, " he said, "there is a vacuum 15:24 of moral leadership among the young. " 15:27 He said: "I'm really concerned. " 15:29 I said: "José, what would it look like if God just... 15:32 if God just poured out showers of blessing? " 15:36 He says: "You know how I picture it? 15:38 I picture if the Spirit got poured out on this place 15:40 that students would be pulling off the sidewalk, 15:41 pulling into dormitory rooms, 15:43 pulling out of a classroom huddled in prayer. 15:46 Praying all the time with each other. " 15:50 Wouldn't that be something? 15:54 We finished our 3-hour meeting and I hurried home 15:58 because I have to... the Academy asked me to come over and speak 16:00 at the Academy the next morning. Ten-minute talk. 16:04 Spent an hour and a half on that devotional. 16:06 Working an hour and a half on it. I'm through. 16:08 I'm kneeling down... I'm in my little study. I say: 16:10 "OK God, bless the devotional, " and I heard a voice. 16:12 Now I didn't hear just a voice but I HEARD a voice 16:16 as it were. And the voice said: 16:18 "Nice devotional, Dwight... the wrong one. " 16:23 I got up and just out loud I said: "You've got to be 16:26 kidding me. I just spent this evening getting ready. " 16:29 I went and sat back down. Pulled out the same yellow pad 16:32 and then the same voice said "Why don't you talk about 16:35 what I'm talking to you about right now? " 16:37 "Why don't you tell about Jonathan? " 16:40 "Why don't you tell about raising the bar so high 16:45 that only God could have His fingerprints on it? " 16:49 So I scribbled something out. 16:51 Then I... "Whoo, this is not going to be pretty at all. " 16:55 Get up early the next morning, go up in my room 16:57 and have worship and I say: "God, You're going to have to 16:59 bless this... this is not much. " 17:02 I get up and I tell the students "You know, I had a little 17:05 something different. " I told the experience. 17:07 "This is what's on my heart... " and for ten minutes 17:11 I talked to them. I told them the story. 17:13 I said: "You know what? You guys at Andrews Academy... 17:17 you're the feeder to Andrews University. 17:20 You're the next generation coming. What would happen 17:23 if God would raise up a generation of moral leaders 17:25 right here - right now - among you seniors? 17:28 And you infiltrate that campus and you come as radical 17:31 disciples of Jesus. " And I'm kind of stumbling around. 17:34 Really, it's not very pretty at all and I'm feeling it. 17:39 But I knew I need to make an appeal. And so I said: "Listen, 17:41 would you be willing - you seniors in particular, 17:44 others as well - would you be willing to offer your life 17:46 to God as a moral leader when you come to the University? " 17:51 Kids started jumping up, jumping up. 17:54 Well, they probably just... everybody stands around here 17:57 anyway. I tell you, I'm feeling so bad about that devotional 18:02 because I'm used to preparing for a talk, you know, and 18:05 I don't just walk up and start talking. 18:08 Then after it's over I chat with a few kids sitting right here. 18:12 We just chit chat, chit chat. I said: "I'm out of here... 18:15 I'm just leaving. " 18:17 I'm driving away, just slipping out... not talking 18:20 to anybody. I'm driving away... I'm halfway home 18:23 right by Apple Valley Market... 18:25 if you've been to Berrien Springs... 18:27 and that same voice said to me: 18:28 "What in the world are you doing? " 18:33 "You're supposed to be back there. Now is the time 18:36 to be there. " I turn right around in Apple Valley parking 18:39 lot. I drove back. I said: "OK. " 18:41 I walked back in and I said: "OK. " There was a senior 18:44 sitting on the front row. I went and found that senior, 18:46 pulled him out of study hall. I said: "I've got to talk to you 18:48 right now. " We went into the chapel... just the two of us. 18:51 He said: "You know something, Pastor? When you called for 18:54 moral leaders my heart just stirred up. " 18:57 Boy, I needed to hear that! 18:59 "My heart just stirred up. " 19:01 He said: "I want to be that moral leader when I go to 19:03 Andrews University next year. " I said: "Good on you... 19:06 let's pray together. " We prayed. 19:08 Then I said: "You know, as long as I'm here... " 19:10 The principal's door was open; I stuck my head in. 19:12 Bob Overstreet. I said: "Hey Bob, you got a minute? " 19:15 He said: "Sit down. " He said: I've been thinking 19:17 about what you've been saying. " And he opened up his heart. 19:22 We began to talk. 19:24 This idea of moral leadership... He said: 'Dwight, what would 19:27 happen if that was Andrews Academy's gift 19:31 to the University: young moral leaders? " 19:34 He said: "I want to pledge everything I can do 19:38 to raise up that generation of moral leaders. " 19:40 We clasped hands together and prayed earnestly. 19:44 I'm walking out and the Bible teacher's walking in. 19:46 He said: "Hey Dwight, that's something, huh? 19:48 Kids stood. " He said: "I saw the kids. The usual... 19:50 the usual ones stood... " Which is what I figured. 19:53 But then he said: "I was watching a young girl there 19:56 and I said: 'She will never stand for this appeal. ' 19:58 And Dwight, she jumped to her feet. " 20:01 So I'm thinking: "Wait a minute. 20:04 Maybe God is up to something. " 20:08 It's Tuesday. I raced back to work on a new 20:12 mini-series that begins that Sabbath. 20:14 I get back to that desk... same yellow pad is sitting there 20:16 and God is saying: "You know what Dwight, you're going to 20:17 drop that mini-series you had in mind and I want you to talk 20:21 about a new thing. 20:23 And just like that with a pencil I began to scribble it down. 20:27 I said: "I've got to check to see if this verse is even in the 20:30 Bible. " I thought it was... you know, a new thing. Well, 20:35 it's probably everywhere in the Bible. 20:36 I went... I went... I pulled out my computer program. 20:39 There's only one place... one place in the entire scripture 20:42 that God makes this promise. 20:43 That promise was embedded on that yellow pad. 20:46 I called the girl up - our graphics designer 20:48 who is on our team. I said: "Rachelle, I've got... 20:50 I've got bad news. " 'Cause she had just sent me 20:52 the new poster for the new series. I said: "I have bad 20:54 news. It's not going to be that. " 20:56 She said: "Dwight, I have 24 hours to turn it around. " 20:58 I said: "God be with you. " 21:01 And she was so sweet. 21:04 These are all young adults. She was so sweet. 21:06 She said: "All right, give me that 24 hours. " 21:10 Because it's the bulletin cover. It's the graphics for the TV. 21:13 It's the posters on campus. Everything comes out of that 21:15 art work. That Sabbath when I stood up in the pulpit 21:19 we opened our Bibles together and I'm going to ask you 21:22 to do the same thing. I want you to go to 21:23 Isaiah chapter 43 verse 19. 21:25 I thought this verse was embedded all through scripture. 21:27 There's only one place... this is it! 21:29 This is it! 21:31 But for four weeks now the Pioneer Memorial Church 21:34 on the campus of Andrews University... we have been 21:36 claiming a single promise for the new year. 21:40 We're calling it A Pre-Season of Prayer. 21:42 You know, here's how... For 30 years past here's how 21:44 we did it: OK, the new year is... 21:45 Oh, the new year is next week! 21:47 Folks, let's have a special prayer for the new year. 21:49 Come on. Let's have a special prayer. The new year is about 21:52 to begin. That's what we've done for 30 years. 21:55 And it suddenly has occurred to me: "You know what, Dwight? 21:58 You're about three months too late. " 22:02 You know in all the major sports of America - 22:04 we're talking about major league baseball and football 22:06 and hockey and basketball - 22:08 they all have what they call a pre-season. 22:11 Isn't that right, fellows? A pre-season. 22:14 I'm not really big into sports but I do know about pre-seasons. 22:18 You know what a pre-season is? 22:20 You play the games but nothing counts. 22:22 Isn't that right? You play the games. 22:24 It's a warm-up. It's getting ready for the real thing. 22:27 In three months, two months, one month, one week. 22:29 What would happen if we had a pre-season of prayer? 22:32 And by the way, when I'm talking about this University 22:36 that I love and this congregation that I pastor 22:38 I'm thinking about your congregation back at home. 22:40 I'm thinking about where you go to church. 22:43 I'm thinking this promise ought not to be only good for us. 22:46 It ought to be perfect for you! 22:49 You can take it back to your preacher. 22:52 You can say: "Pastor, I've been thinking. 22:55 God promises in Isaiah 43:19 22:57 a stunning promise, and I'm wondering if we ought 23:00 to start claiming that promise here. " 23:01 You take it to your preacher. 23:03 You can tell him where you got it from: Isaiah 43:19. 23:08 Isaiah 43:19... here it is in the New King James. 23:12 God speaking: "Behold, I will do a... " What? 23:17 "I will do a new thing. " 23:19 "I will do a new thing. " 23:22 "I am promising you, Israel, in your meltdown, 23:27 in the mess you're in, I am standing before you 23:30 as Almighty God and I am promising you I will do 23:33 a new thing. You can trust Me. " 23:40 We live in a world today where the communication 23:43 cycle is 3 seconds long. Boom! And the headline is there. 23:46 Boom! And another headline. Boom! And another. 23:48 We live in a world where new has become jaded. 23:50 New and improved; new and improved; new and improved. 23:53 And it's never improved but it's new. 23:55 Have you noticed? 23:58 We are jaded as a people. 24:00 Jaded by this concept of "new. " 24:02 And yet God has the audacity to stand before us tonight 24:05 with this them plastered on the wall behind me: 24:08 Showers of Blessings. 24:10 Because that's what He's talking about right here. 24:12 Watch this... Isaiah 43:19: 24:14 "Behold I will do a new thing. Now it shall spring forth. " 24:17 It will come, Dwight. Will you know it? 24:19 "Shall you not know it? I will even make a road in the 24:21 wilderness and rivers in the desert. 24:24 The beast of the field will honor Me... " Verse 20: 24:26 "and the jackals and the ostriches because I gave waters 24:28 in the wilderness and rivers in the desert 24:31 to give drink. " Now, to give drink to whom? 24:34 What does it say? "I will give drink to My people, 24:37 My chosen. " Four times in two verses 24:41 God's talking about water. 24:42 Four times. Rivers in the wilderness, 24:44 waters in the desert, 24:48 drink for My people. 24:52 "I will do a new thing. " 24:54 Whatever this new thing is ladies and gentlemen 24:56 it has to do with water. It has something to do with water 24:59 because the moment He promises a new thing He says 25:01 "I'm going to let water come out of that dry and barren land. " 25:05 "I will do a new thing. " 25:08 There were no chapters when Isaiah wrote his book. 25:13 They put them in centuries later... millennia later. 25:17 So there was no break... it just kept going. 25:20 And four breaths later 25:22 you come to Isaiah 44:3. 25:25 It's all a part of this passage. 25:26 Isaiah 44:3. Water, water, water. "What do you mean, God, 25:29 when You're talking about water? " Read Isaiah 44:3. 25:32 "For I will pour water... " There it is again. 25:35 "I will pour water on her who is... " What? 25:39 "I will pour water on him who is... " What? 25:42 On those who are what? Are thirsty. 25:46 "and floods on the dry ground. " 25:50 Now keep going. "I will pour My Spirit 25:53 on your descendants 25:57 and My blessing on your offspring. " 26:02 When God says: "I'm going to pour water in the desert 26:05 and rivers in the wilderness" 26:07 what's He talking about? 26:09 What's He talking about? 26:11 He's talking about the Holy Spirit, is He not? 26:14 Dry and barren. There is no more fitting 26:18 and appropriate description of human civilization 26:21 than those words "dry and barren" tonight. 26:24 We are as dry as the dead desert. 26:28 "I will pour water on those who are thirsty 26:32 and floods on the dry ground. I will pour My Spirit 26:37 on your descendants and My blessing on your... " 26:42 OK, how many here have children. Put your hand up 26:44 if you have children. Come on... don't be embarrassed. 26:46 They'll know the hands that go up... well maybe who they are. 26:48 Don't worry about it, just put your hand up. 26:50 OK, keep your hand up. Come on, come on, come on. 26:51 How many here have children? 26:53 How many here have grandchildren? 26:54 How many here have grandchildren? 26:56 Do you have seed? Do you have offspring? 26:59 Do you have descendants? Are they secure in the Lord? 27:08 Whenever I go and meet with a team of pastors - 27:11 and I love hanging around with pastors... 27:14 it's been my life - 27:17 the moment we diverge... we diverge from the intended topic 27:23 and we talk about children... I'm telling you, 27:27 it's like a symphony of handkerchiefs. 27:29 They just start coming out. People start pulling them out. 27:32 They start... they dab their eyes. They start to sniffle. 27:35 Why? Because our children are not only our greatest joy... 27:41 they are our deepest heartache. 27:45 FOR ALL OF US! 27:47 Pastors are no different than you and you are no different 27:52 than us. 27:54 Our children... thank God for every one of them that's 27:57 saved tonight. 27:58 Thank God for every one of them that loves Jesus tonight. 28:01 But please, God, for all those who don't love You 28:05 and who are not saved tonight 28:08 that is an amazing promise. 28:11 God says: "I will pour out My Spirit on your descendants 28:14 and My blessing on your offspring. " 28:18 I tell you what: even if you didn't belong to a church, 28:20 even if you're just a Lone Ranger back where you came from 28:23 and you have no congregation to belong to. And I'm very sorry 28:26 for you if you don't have a church to belong to. 28:28 It is God's... it is God's body on earth. 28:32 I know who the head is. Christ is the head 28:34 but the church is the body. 28:36 Even if you had no church to belong to, 28:40 nobody for whom to claim Isaiah 43:19 and Isaiah 44:3, 28:45 no church. But if you have children 28:48 you have a reason tonight madam, you have a reason tonight sir, 28:52 to go to your knees, put your finger on this text, 28:56 and say: "God, I'm begging You: 28:59 Do... please... do a new thing. 29:04 Please, I beg of You. " 29:07 After I shared that first teaching at Pioneer 29:11 a buddy of mine - Gary Burns - who is Communication Director 29:14 for the Lake Union Conference of Seventh-day Adventists 29:17 was sitting in the audience. 29:19 So he gets his little... He's Mr. Texter... 29:21 So he gets his little... 29:23 I'm amazed that you people know how to text. 29:25 Isn't that something? 29:27 And you're probably amazed that I know how to do it too! 29:29 Well I really don't, so anyway... 29:31 But anyway, Gary sends me a little text. 29:33 He says: "Dwight, Dwight, Dwight: 29:34 three ingredients. " OK, this is a very short text. 29:37 It reads like this: "Three ingredients 29:39 for transformational revival" 29:42 because that's what that's talking about. 29:44 When God's talking about pouring out floods on the dry ground 29:47 that's revival. Do you know what a revival is? 29:49 A revival is a resurrection. 29:50 That which is dead is brought back to life. 29:53 So when our world church president is going around the 29:56 world and saying: "We need to pray for revival" 29:58 what he's saying is: "We are in a heap of trouble. " 30:03 Our church is in a heap of trouble and he's right! 30:07 Because the church has you in it and me in it, that's why. 30:10 Amen. We're always thinking about the heap of trouble 30:12 is our neighbor across the pew. 30:14 But actually, yeah. We are in a heap of trouble. Look at that. 30:18 You know my friend Ron Clouzet? 30:21 You know Ron Clouzet? He's written a book... great book. 30:24 Our staff just finished reading it for worships 30:26 all this last year. You can get the book after sundown 30:29 in the ABC tonight. 30:32 Title of the book: Adventism's Greatest Need: 30:35 the Outpouring of the Holy Spirit. 30:36 Adventism's Greatest Need. In that book 30:40 Ron offers this diagnosis of the community of faith 30:44 I love. 30:48 "Admittedly, in the vast areas of the Western world 30:52 we are a church in decline. " 30:54 True or false? True. It's true. 30:57 "Our preoccupation for the things of the world and our 31:00 searing blindness to our true condition have made us 31:02 who have talent, resources, and much history in Jesus 31:06 a puny spiritual people. 31:10 We really are terminally ill but little do we know it. 31:14 We have been medicating for so long that we don't know 31:16 what health is like any more. 31:18 What we desperately need is a double dose of spiritual aid, 31:21 a revelation of the character of Christ, 31:24 and a thorough baptism of the Holy Spirit. " 31:30 We have been self-medicating. 31:32 Americans are good at self-medication. 31:35 Why do you think they advertise so much medicine 31:39 in the evening during the news hour? 31:42 They're targeting this generation. 31:44 Buy... ask for it by name the next time you see your doc. 31:49 We are self-medicators. 31:52 We have self-medicated ourselves in the church. 31:54 We have self-medicated ourselves by affluence. 31:57 We have so much now it's almost embarrassing. 32:00 It'd be embarrassing to bump into Peter, Paul, 32:03 John, James, and the lot. 32:06 If they saw our parking lot... 32:10 If they saw our parking lot... 32:14 They'd say: "You guys are still here? 32:17 You have instant communication; you have text messaging; 32:20 you have e-mail; you have live video. 32:24 You can talk to the whole world simultaneously 32:27 and you're still here? " 32:29 We've been self-medicating ourselves. 32:32 We are a puny people spiritually. 32:35 We need for God to do a new thing in our midst. 32:39 Amen! If He does not do a new thing, 32:42 it's over... it is over. 32:46 And God will wait as long as it takes 32:49 to finally raise up a generation. 32:52 He's not in a rush. 32:54 He will not hurry through His end game. 32:57 He will put it off as long as necessary 33:01 because He never fails. Amen! 33:06 He'll take as much time as He needs. 33:09 He will win... He will win. 33:13 The question is: Will we win with Him 33:15 or will He win without us? 33:18 "I will do a new thing. " 33:24 Amen! Boy, that's what we need. 33:26 We need it in the Pioneer Memorial Church 33:28 where I serve. 33:31 We need it in the church where you worship. 33:34 We need "a new thing. " 33:38 So, Gary sends me this text message. 33:41 Three keys to transformational revival. 33:44 Now he picks the three words and he puts them there 33:47 in his little text message. I don't know if he picked them 33:49 in some certain order but I can tell you that 33:51 by their first letters they spell a word, 33:53 and I'm going to give the word to you because you will never 33:55 forget these three words I predict once you log them in. 34:00 The letters were D... and the word... 34:02 U... and the word... 34:04 E... and the word. 34:06 DUE. 34:09 That was right after that opening installment of this 34:11 little three-part mini-series that's now on our website. 34:15 DUE. 34:17 For the last three weeks I have been brooding over it: 34:20 DUE and the three words. 34:23 Could it be that these three words are long overDUE? 34:28 They're past DUE... DUE. 34:33 You say: "Dwight, come on, come on, come on. 34:34 Quit playing games. What's the DUE? " 34:36 I was hoping you'd ask. 34:37 D = desperation. 34:41 Ingredients for revival: D... desperation. 34:45 I am desperate... we are lost unless You intervene. 34:52 Transformational revival. Ingredient #1: desperation. 34:55 U = urgency. 34:58 Desperation, urgency. 35:01 Urgent God, You can't wait. If You wait, I'm gone! 35:06 We'll lose this generation. 35:09 D = desperation. U... What was U again? 35:13 Urgency. E... What was E again? 35:16 Expectancy. 35:18 Expectancy. Just write those three down. 35:21 DUE. 35:24 Desperation, urgency, expectancy. 35:30 You know what kind of praying that is? 35:33 Right here in Isaiah. I found it. 35:35 Gary sends me this text message and look at this. Watch this. 35:39 Oh, did you know these verses were in your Bible? 35:41 Just turn a few pages over... Isaiah chapter 62. 35:46 Isaiah 62... take a look at this. 35:47 Isn't this something? 35:49 Talking about desperation, urgency, and expectancy... 35:53 God is calling for it right here. 35:55 He says: "I will do a new thing. " 35:58 "I will pour water upon him, upon her, upon them who are 36:01 thirsty. I will pour floods on the dry ground. 36:05 I will pour My Spirit on your descendants 36:07 and My blessing on your offspring. " 36:10 "I'll do a new thing but you have to ask Me... 36:15 you have to ask Me. " 36:22 You say: "that is really mean of God. 36:24 I mean, come on God... just do it. 36:26 Don't sit around and wait for us to have a pre-season of prayer. 36:28 Just do what You've got to do. " 36:30 "No, " He said, "I'm not going to do what I've got to do 36:32 because if I do what I should do and you're not praying 36:36 it will spoil on the vine just like that. " 36:40 "You ask me. I'm going to honor your free choice. 36:44 Do you want your congregation... 36:47 Do you want that congregation to experience 36:50 something it never has before? 36:52 Do you want a new thing? Ask Me... ask Me. " 36:57 And that's what He's saying right here. This is Isaiah 62:6. 37:00 "I have set watchmen on your walls 37:02 O Jerusalem. " By the way, Jerusalem, 37:04 or Zion is what God calls the church in the Old Testament... 37:07 What God calls the church in the New Testament is 37:09 ecclesia which is our... we call it church. It means 37:12 the called out ones... the chosen ones. 37:15 So what God is saying about Jerusalem, He's talking about 37:17 the church. What does He say here? Look at that again. 37:19 "I have set watchmen on your walls, O Jerusalem. " 37:23 Do you know who these watchmen are? 37:25 I'm going to tell you who they are in advance. 37:26 You know who these watchmen are? We have them. 37:28 We have them at the Pioneer Memorial Church and I thank God 37:31 for every one of them. You have them in your congregation. 37:34 You may be one of them. 37:35 They are often times anonymous; they are unrecognized 37:39 and usually unrewarded publicly. 37:43 But the watchmen - these sentinels on the walls of your 37:47 church back at home - are the men and women and young adults 37:50 and some teenagers now 37:53 who have felt the call of God to privately intercede 37:57 for your congregation. 37:59 They are praying. There's no big show. 38:03 There's no big fanfare. They don't get up on Sabbath 38:05 and say: "By the way I just wanted you to know 38:06 I've been praying all this week. " Not a word! 38:09 They're the watchmen. 38:12 They are the first degree of intercessors. 38:16 They are the spiritual advance guard 38:21 and God has them in every church. 38:24 You may be one. 38:29 God says: "I have set watchmen on your walls, O Jerusalem. " 38:34 These are the people who... keep reading: "They shall never 38:38 hold their peace... " What's that next line? 38:40 "day or night. " "They shall never hold their 38:42 peace day or night. " 38:47 They don't hold their peace. These are the private 38:50 intercessors of the first degree 38:53 who spend hours in prayer. 38:56 I've been privileged to know a handful of human beings 38:59 like that. I know them by name. 39:02 I know them by practice. 39:04 I know that whenever I go somewhere, whenever I'm in deep 39:07 need, they will be the first people I privately call and say: 39:10 "Would you please pray for this. " 39:13 They want no reward, 39:15 they seek no recognition, 39:17 but they are God's gift to the church. 39:22 "I have watchmen on these walls who give... " 39:26 How does He put it here? "They never hold their peace 39:29 day or night. " The problem of even mentioning them 39:32 is that you and I automatically might defer 39:35 our prayer responsibility to them. 39:36 "Well good. I'm glad God's got watchmen on the walls. 39:38 You guys keep at it, will you? 39:40 I have other things I need to be doing. " 39:42 We cannot defer... we cannot default our prayer duty to them. 39:46 No, no, no, no. That's why God goes on. 39:48 Look at this. He says: "Look it... I have these watchmen. 39:50 They never hold their peace day or night. 39:51 Now you... you who make mention of the Lord... " 39:54 Do you ever make mention of the Lord? 39:56 In your praying, do you make mention of the Lord? 39:58 Of course you do. He's talking to you and me now. 40:00 "You who make mention of the Lord do not keep silent 40:04 either and give Him... " What's that next couple of? 40:09 "Give Him no rest till He establishes, until He makes 40:13 Jerusalem" - the church - "a praise in the earth. " 40:15 In other words: "You give Me no rest until I revive the church. 40:19 You stay on Me. " I found this in the New Living Translation. 40:25 And they were telling me at the prison ministries 40:29 earlier this morning that they use the New Living 40:32 because it's easier for the prisoners to understand 40:34 sometimes. Let me read this to you, so you can just follow 40:36 in whatever translation you have, but here's the New Living. 40:38 "O Jerusalem, I have posted watchmen on your walls 40:42 and they will pray to the Lord day and night for the 40:44 fulfillment of His promises. " Now, to the rest of us: 40:47 "Take no rest all you who pray. Give the Lord no rest 40:53 until He makes Jerusalem the object of His praise. " 40:55 Did we talk about desperation, urgency, and expectancy? 40:57 Have we already talked about that? 40:59 That's what's happening here. "Give Me no rest. " 41:01 In fact, the New Voice translation just came out 41:03 this last year. Let me share this with you. 41:05 I like this rather free rendition. 41:08 "Tirelessly pester God. " 41:12 Do you know what it means to pester somebody? 41:14 What's it mean? Tell me what it means to pester somebody. 41:16 Huh? Do what? 41:19 Needle them... nag! 41:22 Must have experience. 41:26 Pester... what does it mean to pester? 41:27 Nag nag nag nag nag nag nag nag nag. 41:29 God says: "Hey! Hey! Pester Me. " 41:33 "Pester Me. Give Me no rest 41:36 until I revive the church on earth. " 41:39 Desperation... help me out. What's this D? 41:43 What's this U? Urgency. What's this E? Expectancy. 41:48 Long overdue... this prayer experience that God is calling 41:52 for... long overdue. 41:55 "Take no rest... give Me no rest... pester Me 42:00 until I... until I do a new thing. 42:03 Until I pour water on those who are thirsty. 42:07 Floods on dry ground and My Spirit on your descendants 42:11 and My blessing on your offspring. " 42:13 "Pester Me... stay after Me. " 42:19 Friend of mine gave me a book last week. 42:21 I was reading it this afternoon, too. 42:24 Boy, the book has just stirred up my soul. 42:26 And that's why the Spirit said: "Dwight, you better 42:28 just do business where... transact business where I'm 42:31 working on you right now. " 42:32 Title of the book is The Circle Maker. 42:36 It's written by Mark Batterson. 42:39 Listen to this: "Desperate times... " Oh, that fits our 42:41 word desperation, doesn't it? 42:42 "Desperate times call for desperate measures. " 42:46 By the way, if you go on our website you get all these 42:48 studies. That's all I'm working off of. 42:50 I've got no notes up here, it's just the study guide. 42:52 They're all there on our website: www. pmchurch. tv 42:57 "Desperate times call for desperate measures 42:59 and there is no more desperate act than praying hard. " 43:04 Not praying light... praying hard. 43:08 "There comes a moment when you need to throw caution to the 43:10 wind and draw a circle in the sand. 43:12 There comes a moment when you need to defy protocol, 43:14 drop to your knees, and pray for the impossible. " 43:18 Would it be impossible for God to revive the church 43:21 in North America? How about just the church in America 43:23 period? It almost feels like it would be impossible now. 43:29 "Desperate times call for desperate measures. " 43:34 Draw a Circle in the Sand. The book is based 43:39 on an intertestamental, true story that Josephus 43:42 tells us about. Between Malachi and Matthew 43:44 you know there's still the history of the Jews. 43:47 And there was a prophet named Honi... H-O-N-I. 43:51 The land was under a blazing drought. 43:56 One day Honi walked out with all the people watching him 43:59 and he drew a circle in the sand. 44:01 And he says: "God, I'm stepping into this circle 44:04 and I am not leaving this circle until You answer this prayer. 44:09 Send rain. " 44:13 Ladies and gentlemen, that's what Isaiah 62 verses 6 and 7 44:17 is all about. "Give Me no rest. " 44:21 "Pester Me until I pour out the windows of heaven 44:26 and the rain of the Spirit. " 44:30 "There comes a moment when you need to defy protocol, 44:33 drop to your knees, and pray for the impossible. 44:35 There comes a moment when you need to muster every ounce 44:37 of faith you have and call down rain from heaven. " 44:40 Do you know that that phrase Showers of Blessings... 44:42 do you know that that phrase is a direct quote from the 44:44 book of Ezekiel? God has promised showers of blessings. 44:48 That isn't some hymn writer's little cute nifty phrase. 44:51 That is a direct quote from Ezekiel. 44:53 "I will give you showers of blessings 44:57 but you must ask... you must ask. " 45:00 Ellen White... Let me share this with you. 45:03 This is Christ Object Lessons. 45:05 You ought to jot this page number down; this is dynamite. 45:07 Page 147. That little classic on the parables of Jesus. 45:11 Notice how it opens up. 45:13 These are all there. If you get the study guide you have it. 45:16 "Plead... plead... " That's one of those desperation, 45:21 urgency, expectancy words, isn't it? 45:23 "Plead... " She doesn't say ask, she said: "Plead with Me. " 45:27 "Plead for the Holy Spirit. God stands back of every promise 45:32 He has made. I suppose that would include Isaiah 43:19 45:35 and Isaiah 44:3, wouldn't it? 45:37 I think so. With your Bible in your hands... 45:40 with your Bible in your hands 45:42 you say: "I have done as Thou hast said; 45:45 I present Thy promise ask and it shall be given you, 45:48 seek and you will find, knock and it will be opened 45:49 unto you. When with earnestness and intensity... " 45:53 What was that DUE? What's the D again? 45:55 What's the U again? 45:57 What's the E again? 45:59 That's what this quotation is talking about. 46:01 "With earnestness and intensity... " 46:05 I tell you what: a quickie little prayer 46:08 will not save a single child of God. 46:10 You want to save the young in your church? 46:12 You want to save the young in your family? 46:14 It won't happen with a little quickie... 46:15 "Oh, by the way God, bless my grandchildren 46:17 and save them. I've got stuff to do. Good-bye. " 46:20 No child will get saved with a quickie little prayer. 46:25 Oh well, they said we ought to be praying. 46:29 "With an intensity and earnestness... " DUE! 46:33 Long overdue. "With an intensity and earnestness... " 46:36 "When with earnestness and intensity we breathe a prayer 46:39 in the name of Christ there is in that very... " 46:41 Oh, I love this. "There is in that very 46:44 intensity a pledge from God 46:49 that He is about to answer our prayer exceeding abundantly 46:53 above all that we ask or think. " 46:56 Now I want you to listen to me carefully. 46:57 Listen, listen, listen. 47:00 Sometimes when you pray... 47:02 Does it happen to you, too? 47:04 You are so intense into that prayer 47:07 that you actually start to weep. 47:10 Does that ever happen to you? 47:11 Yeah, of course it does. 47:15 What the author is saying 47:18 is when your prayer reaches that level: desperation, 47:24 urgency, and expectancy 47:27 and it wells up within you and your eyes begin to tear 47:32 that very intensity is God's pledge: 47:36 "Girl, boy: I'm going to do... 47:42 I'm going to answer your prayer. " 47:45 The very intensity is God's way of saying 47:51 "Connect. I hear you. 47:55 I hear you. " 47:59 Isn't that something? 48:02 Wow! 48:04 Desperation, urgency, 48:13 expectancy. 48:18 "Desperate times call for desperate measures. " 48:20 Ladies and gentlemen, if the Spirit isn't poured out on the 48:24 church in the United States 48:27 Laodicea is dead... it's over. 48:32 Calvary was the beginning of an outpouring that manifested 48:38 itself in Pentecost, didn't it? 48:40 Pentecost... Fifty days after the cross. 48:43 Fifty days later - 10 days of which were preceded... 48:47 preceding ten days preparing for Pentecost... 48:50 Calvary is always connected with an outpouring. 48:53 It's not a mistake that we went to the cross. 48:56 Our hearts have to be broken there. 48:59 We have to ask forgiveness. 49:00 We have to make some things right. 49:02 We have to take down a few walls. 49:04 We cannot leave these walls up. 49:06 God will not bless a fractured community. 49:11 We can't be television stations competing with each other. 49:14 Amen! 49:17 We cannot. God says: "I'm not going to bless you. " 49:20 "I'll give you a modicum of blessing. " 49:26 "Desperate times call for desperate measures. " 49:29 And it may mean picking up the phone. 49:33 Somebody that you've been alienated with... 49:34 Picking up that phone and saying: "It's over. " 49:39 "I want to be bonded with you. Whatever you do I wish to do. " 49:45 "Your mission is my mission; your dream is my dream. " 49:52 We can't leave these walls up 49:56 nor can we leave the walls up that separate us as races. 50:01 Amen. 50:03 God will never revive a church with racial walls. 50:07 Never, never, never! 50:11 He will not revive a church that is racially segregated. 50:15 Separate but equal... He will not revive a church. 50:19 You can say all you want. "Well He'll just bless us both 50:22 separately. " He won't bless you both at all. 50:27 Not with that kind of attitude. 50:30 The wall has to come down. 50:33 It has to come down. 50:35 There'll never be revival without it. 50:37 You can pray till you're blue in the face for revival 50:39 but if you're leaving a wall up and you know it's a wall 50:41 between you and that brother, you and that sister, 50:43 you and that organization, you and that race, 50:46 there will never be a revival for you. 50:48 "I can't get water through here. You want floods on the dry 50:52 ground? You've dammed the whole place up. " 50:56 "I don't have little pockets that I rain on. 50:59 I want to rain on the entire church. " 51:02 Ladies and gentlemen: the point is God is ready to do 51:05 a new thing. It's time we ask Him to do a new thing. 51:15 Desperation, 51:18 urgency, expectancy. 51:28 "Behold I will do a new thing. 51:33 I will pour water on him - on her - who is thirsty. 51:42 I will pour My Spirit on your descendants 51:46 and My blessing on your offspring. " 51:52 We end with the words of Jesus 51:56 who must have had Isaiah 44 in mind 52:00 when He spoke these words: 52:02 We'll end with Jesus' words. Red letters words 52:04 if you have a red letter Bible... the gospel of John. 52:07 The gospel of John chapter 7. 52:11 In the great Feast of Tabernacles, the very last day 52:15 Jesus, who had been incognito, stands up and with this clarion 52:20 trumpet voice cries out words we need to hear tonight. 52:25 This is John chapter 7... 52:27 John chapter 7 verse 37: 52:31 John 7:37: "And on the last day - 52:35 that great day of the Feast of Tabernacles - 52:39 Jesus stood and cried out saying: 'If anyone thirst... ' 52:44 There it is: 'if anyone is thirsty... 52:47 let him come to Me, let her come to Me and drink. 52:50 She who believes in Me, he who believes in me 52:53 as the scripture has said out of his heart will flow 52:56 rivers of living water. ' 52:59 The same words in the Greek Old Testament 53:01 are here in John's gospel. 53:04 The same linkage to Isaiah... the same wording. 53:07 'Out of their hearts will flow rivers of living water. ' 53:10 But... " verse 29... "this He spoke concerning the Spirit 53:13 whom those believing in Him would receive. 53:16 For the Holy Spirit was not yet given because Jesus 53:19 was not yet glorified. " 53:22 Glorified is code language for Calvary. 53:25 Glorified is code language for the cross. 53:29 Ladies and gentlemen: I have great news for you tonight. 53:32 The cross has already happened! 53:35 2,000 years ago He has been glorified 53:39 and He's ready now to a church that is thirsty, 53:43 to a people that is pleading, He is ready now 53:47 to pour out His Spirit. 53:48 The question is: "Are you ready to ask? " 53:54 Are you desperate enough? 53:57 Are you urgent enough? 54:00 Do you expect that He can do what He has promised to do? 54:04 Do you believe? 54:12 Then we must ask. I'm going home early 54:16 in the morning. Our pre-season of prayer goes on. 54:19 We are not going to quit praying. 54:21 And if you don't want to pray for your home church 54:23 then I wish you'd pray for Andrews University 54:25 and for Pioneer Memorial Church. 54:27 You don't want to pray for your home church that's your business 54:29 then pray for mine. 54:32 We need God to do a new thing. 54:35 Amen! We desperately need God to do a new thing. 54:41 Would you join me in that prayer? 54:44 Would you be willing to say: "Hey listen, Dwight, 54:46 I'm willing. You can count me in. 54:49 I'll be one of those sentinels. 54:50 I'm going home as a watchman, a watchwoman. 54:52 I will be on the walls and I will give God no rest 54:55 until He pours out His Spirit on my church. " 54:58 Would you be willing to be one of those? 55:00 Would you stand to your feet and say: "All right, God, 55:02 you can count me in. I will do this by Your grace. 55:04 I will do this by Your grace. 55:08 I will do this by Your grace. " 55:12 Oh God, there's nothing special in us. 55:15 I'll tell you what's the truth about us, Father: 55:17 is we're desperate. 55:18 We are urgent. 55:20 We believe You can do what You have promised to do. 55:24 We plead... we plead for the showers of blessing. 55:29 Do something in North America. 55:31 Do something in the United States. 55:33 Do something in my home church. 55:35 Dear God, do something among us as a people. 55:38 Don't leave us the same. 55:39 Don't let us go home the same tonight. 55:41 Don't let us go home the same. 55:44 Keep us asking and pleading and asking and pleading 55:47 until the day the floodgates of heaven are thrown wide 55:50 and the floods of Christ Jesus Himself 55:55 are poured out upon a dry and dusty world. 55:59 Please dear God, begin with these who stand before You. 56:02 Honor him, honor her. Don't let us forget 56:06 we have made this pledge. Keep us praying 56:10 until Jesus comes I pray. Sing it with me: 56:14 "There shall be showers of blessing: " 56:19 Oh, that today they might fall; 56:22 You know the words better... Come on, keep going: 56:24 There shall be seasons refreshing, 56:29 Sent from the Savior above. 56:33 Sing it out now: 56:34 Showers of blessing, 56:39 Showers of blessing we need. 56:44 Mercy drops round us are falling, 56:49 But for the showers we plead. 56:53 Sing that chorus again with me: 56:55 Showers of blessing, 57:00 Showers of blessing we need. 57:05 Mercy drops round us are falling, 57:10 But for the showers we plead. 57:14 Now sing it quietly... sing that chorus quietly: 57:17 Showers of blessing, 57:23 Showers of blessing we need. 57:28 Mercy drops round us are falling, 57:34 But for the showers we plead. |
