Thank you, girls. Thank you, Jim. 00:06:15.17\00:06:18.37 Danny, we have really appreciated so much 00:06:18.50\00:06:24.16 the sermons that Pastor Dwight Nelson has been bringing us. 00:06:24.66\00:06:29.18 Amen. And Pastor Stephen Bohr was with us earlier in the week. 00:06:29.48\00:06:33.27 He had another appointment this weekend so when he 00:06:33.30\00:06:37.55 wrapped up yesterday he rushed right out of here 00:06:37.65\00:06:40.15 for his next appointment. 00:06:40.25\00:06:41.78 But as we have continued this series on the cross 00:06:42.28\00:06:46.81 what a blessing it has been. Amen. As I mentioned earlier 00:06:47.21\00:06:51.77 in the week, Pastor Dwight Nelson for thirty years 00:06:51.90\00:06:56.45 has been the pastor of the Pioneer Memorial Church. 00:06:56.65\00:07:02.12 He went there when he was 15 years old and he... 00:07:02.52\00:07:08.45 It's amazing. There are not very many pastors 00:07:11.21\00:07:15.02 that last thirty years. I think Dwight and maybe one other 00:07:15.22\00:07:20.01 is all I've ever heard of. 00:07:20.21\00:07:21.56 So his wife Karen is right by his side 00:07:21.86\00:07:26.19 and his son Kirk lives there in Berrien Springs. 00:07:27.34\00:07:29.69 He's married. By the way they're expecting a grandchild 00:07:29.79\00:07:33.28 in October and we're looking forward to that. 00:07:33.48\00:07:35.96 Kristen, his daughter, is married as well. 00:07:36.16\00:07:38.31 She lives in the Portland, Oregon, area. 00:07:38.41\00:07:40.77 And so Pastor Dwight will be bringing us the sermon 00:07:41.27\00:07:45.42 this morning: Near the Cross Finis - which is Latin for 00:07:45.53\00:07:50.60 Finish - The Last Word. 00:07:50.70\00:07:54.52 Before he does, Danny Shelton is going to sing for us 00:07:54.72\00:07:58.50 one of my all-time favorite songs - 00:07:58.81\00:08:01.61 and there's no one I'd rather hear sing it than Danny - 00:08:01.91\00:08:04.62 Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus. 00:08:04.92\00:08:08.09 O soul, are you weary 00:08:18.95\00:08:23.40 and troubled? 00:08:23.80\00:08:27.45 No light in 00:08:28.26\00:08:30.31 the darkness you see? 00:08:30.61\00:08:36.56 There's light for a look at 00:08:37.82\00:08:42.30 the Savior, 00:08:42.70\00:08:46.14 And life so abundant 00:08:46.70\00:08:51.43 and free! 00:08:51.83\00:08:56.16 Turn your eyes 00:08:56.57\00:09:00.38 upon Jesus, 00:09:00.78\00:09:04.40 Look full 00:09:05.63\00:09:07.63 in His wonderful face; 00:09:08.13\00:09:13.12 And the things of earth 00:09:14.54\00:09:18.63 will grow strangely dim 00:09:19.21\00:09:22.88 In the light of His glory 00:09:23.83\00:09:28.33 and grace. 00:09:28.81\00:09:32.21 His word 00:09:37.83\00:09:40.08 will not fail you 00:09:40.38\00:09:42.78 He's promised; 00:09:43.08\00:09:45.49 Believe Him 00:09:47.15\00:09:48.82 and all will be well: 00:09:49.33\00:09:55.27 Then go to a world 00:09:56.65\00:10:00.51 that is dying, 00:10:00.61\00:10:05.10 His perfect salvation 00:10:05.40\00:10:09.98 to tell. Sing it with me now... 00:10:10.18\00:10:13.30 Turn your eyes 00:10:14.77\00:10:18.29 upon Jesus, 00:10:18.50\00:10:22.82 Look full in 00:10:23.22\00:10:25.62 His wonderful face; 00:10:25.83\00:10:30.47 And the things of earth 00:10:32.27\00:10:36.33 will grow strangely dim 00:10:36.53\00:10:41.36 in the light 00:10:41.66\00:10:43.62 of His glory 00:10:43.82\00:10:46.48 and grace. 00:10:46.69\00:10:49.08 In the light 00:10:55.51\00:10:57.95 of His glory 00:10:58.26\00:11:00.51 and grace. Amen! 00:11:00.81\00:11:06.51 Oh, that was beautiful! 00:11:12.98\00:11:14.75 That's why we come to worship. 00:11:16.36\00:11:18.78 We come so that He might be the vision 00:11:21.00\00:11:25.34 that we encounter... that we take away 00:11:25.64\00:11:29.54 every time we go to church. 00:11:29.84\00:11:32.06 Turn your eyes upon Jesus. 00:11:32.46\00:11:34.77 Well, I'm happy to tell you that in the federal penitentiary 00:11:35.07\00:11:37.43 just south of Marion, Illinois, this morning they had worship. 00:11:37.63\00:11:41.13 Amen. 00:11:41.43\00:11:43.11 And it was such an honor to leave here at 7:00 AM 00:11:43.31\00:11:46.41 and head down there with a team of dedicated 00:11:46.51\00:11:49.73 3ABN workers. 00:11:49.83\00:11:54.22 Talking about Brian Hamilton, the treasurer of this 00:11:55.82\00:11:57.67 organization, his wife Diane, a volunteer here named Dan, 00:11:57.77\00:12:01.12 the Marshalls. And they're not only doing Sabbath morning. 00:12:01.32\00:12:06.65 They've got another twice a month Sabbath afternoon 00:12:08.00\00:12:10.95 at another jail service. They'll be there this afternoon. 00:12:11.05\00:12:13.84 They have a Thursday night every week at another jail 00:12:14.04\00:12:17.08 and then they're with the women on Monday nights 00:12:17.28\00:12:19.94 at another jail. Absolutely 00:12:20.04\00:12:24.08 a God-anointed ministry. 00:12:24.28\00:12:27.28 You know, I just kept thinking of it as I was there. 00:12:28.09\00:12:30.36 I had the privilege of preaching there. 00:12:30.46\00:12:32.78 Jesus said: "I was in prison and you took the time. " 00:12:32.98\00:12:37.66 He didn't say what I was in prison for... 00:12:38.71\00:12:40.60 He just said: "I was in prison. " 00:12:40.81\00:12:42.21 Doesn't mean just visit those who are wrongfully accused. 00:12:42.71\00:12:46.09 That means anybody in jail. 00:12:46.19\00:12:48.08 And this is an incredible ministry. 00:12:48.48\00:12:50.71 So Dan led in a little praise time before the teaching. 00:12:51.11\00:12:56.03 And all right, OK, anyone give praise? 00:12:56.43\00:12:58.31 And one prisoner's hand went up; his name is Mark. 00:12:58.51\00:13:00.70 And he said: "You know I praise God 00:13:00.90\00:13:02.56 I listen to 3ABN on the radio. " 00:13:02.66\00:13:04.77 He said: "I praise God because I've been getting all this 00:13:06.34\00:13:08.52 interference, interference, interference and then 00:13:08.63\00:13:11.60 the penitentiary reconfigured all the televisions... " 00:13:11.70\00:13:16.63 in his wing at least 00:13:16.83\00:13:19.28 and he said: "The interference is gone, Hallelujah! " 00:13:19.48\00:13:22.12 Amen. You know, you take 3ABN for granted where you are. 00:13:22.32\00:13:25.29 You watch it, you listen to it, you get it online. 00:13:25.50\00:13:27.98 But here is a prisoner in a federal penitentiary... 00:13:28.18\00:13:31.15 that's a lifeline for him. 00:13:31.55\00:13:33.51 So when they receive an offering at this Camp Meeting 00:13:34.50\00:13:37.23 season of the year I hope you do something more 00:13:37.43\00:13:40.93 than just a dollar bill in that bucket. 00:13:41.03\00:13:43.84 This ministry goes 24/7 00:13:44.35\00:13:48.56 to the entire planet... penitentiaries included. 00:13:48.76\00:13:52.39 Amen! "I was in prison and you came to Me 00:13:52.69\00:13:55.91 through the radio. " What a gift! 00:13:56.01\00:13:59.26 Praise God is right! 00:13:59.57\00:14:01.09 I want to pray with you and then plunge into our 00:14:04.05\00:14:06.03 teaching this morning. Father, thank you 00:14:06.13\00:14:10.20 for that call through Danny 00:14:10.40\00:14:13.45 to turn our eyes... turn our eyes upon Jesus. 00:14:13.75\00:14:17.39 May He be front and center right now. 00:14:17.52\00:14:19.94 He's whom we want to go home with. 00:14:21.00\00:14:24.20 So let Him be clear... let Him be seen. 00:14:24.60\00:14:26.94 Hide me... hide all of us in the shadow of His presence. 00:14:27.14\00:14:30.88 We pray in His name, Amen. 00:14:31.02\00:14:33.75 So I go to Google and I type in... 00:14:34.35\00:14:36.08 you can ask Google anything you want and so I type in: 00:14:36.18\00:14:38.18 "Can you die of a broken heart? " 00:14:38.28\00:14:40.21 1.27 second later it gives me what? 500,000 different answers. 00:14:40.41\00:14:44.86 I took the first one... Washington Post. 00:14:44.96\00:14:47.50 Have it right here... let me read this. 00:14:47.70\00:14:50.53 Can you die of a broken heart? 00:14:50.63\00:14:52.70 "The idea that someone can die from a broken heart 00:14:53.44\00:14:55.14 has long been subject of folklore, soap operas, 00:14:55.25\00:14:57.55 and literature. Researchers have known that stress can trigger 00:14:57.65\00:15:00.16 heart attacks in people prone to them, 00:15:00.26\00:15:02.21 and a syndrome resembling a heart attack in otherwise 00:15:02.51\00:15:05.30 healthy people after acute emotional stress 00:15:05.40\00:15:07.92 has been reported in Japan" - where I was born and grew up 00:15:08.12\00:15:10.63 for 14 years. "But very little was known about this phenomenon 00:15:10.73\00:15:14.41 in this country and no one had any idea how it happened. " 00:15:14.51\00:15:17.22 Now quoting Ilan Wittstein of the Johns Hopkins School 00:15:17.56\00:15:21.73 of Medicine in Baltimore he said: "When you think about 00:15:21.83\00:15:24.96 people who have died of a 'broken heart' 00:15:25.10\00:15:27.16 there are probably several ways that can happen. " 00:15:27.36\00:15:29.85 His research, by the way, reported in the New England 00:15:30.15\00:15:32.84 Journal of Medicine. He goes on: 00:15:32.94\00:15:34.39 "A broken heart can kill you and this may be one of the ways: 00:15:34.49\00:15:37.85 a traumatic break up, the death of a loved one, 00:15:38.25\00:15:41.14 or even the shock of a surprise party can unleash a flood of 00:15:41.24\00:15:43.84 stress hormones that can stun the heart causing sudden 00:15:43.94\00:15:47.08 life-threatening heart spasms in otherwise healthy people 00:15:47.18\00:15:51.06 researchers have reported. " 00:15:51.27\00:15:53.37 Now the condition is called stress cardiomyopathy. 00:15:53.57\00:15:56.79 OK? 00:15:58.05\00:15:59.23 They're studying this phenomenon. 00:15:59.43\00:16:00.78 The study should help improve treatment for patients who 00:16:01.08\00:16:03.15 might otherwise receive drugs or other therapies 00:16:03.35\00:16:05.32 that could do more harm than good. " 00:16:05.42\00:16:06.56 "I think I'm having a heart attack... " so they 00:16:06.66\00:16:07.74 give you the heart attack drugs. No, you're not having 00:16:07.84\00:16:09.23 a heart attack... this is a stress attack. 00:16:09.33\00:16:11.15 The treatment is completely different 00:16:11.45\00:16:13.27 so it's a big deal. 00:16:13.37\00:16:14.72 One more line here quoting Wittstein again: 00:16:15.02\00:16:18.14 "Our hypothesis is that massive amounts of these stress hormones 00:16:18.34\00:16:21.43 can go right to the heart and produce a stunning 00:16:21.53\00:16:24.03 of the heart muscle that causes this temporary dysfunction 00:16:24.13\00:16:27.55 resembling a heart attack. 00:16:27.75\00:16:28.97 It doesn't kill the heart muscle like a typical heart attack 00:16:29.07\00:16:31.40 but it renders it helpless... it just stops. " 00:16:31.60\00:16:34.44 Amazing. 00:16:35.29\00:16:36.91 We've been going to Calvary... you and I... 00:16:37.79\00:16:39.90 these last few sessions together. 00:16:40.10\00:16:42.42 Wednesday night we were at Thursday night - the upper room. 00:16:43.45\00:16:46.84 Then Thursday night it's Friday. 00:16:47.14\00:16:51.65 Last night it was Friday in the gospels. 00:16:51.95\00:16:53.97 This morning it's Friday. 00:16:54.10\00:16:55.18 Tonight we end. Sunday, Sunday... don't miss tonight. 00:16:55.28\00:16:58.99 I want to go one last time to the story of Calvary here. 00:16:59.29\00:17:02.69 And there's one gospel we haven't gotten to yet: 00:17:02.93\00:17:04.69 and that would be the gospel of? John. 00:17:04.79\00:17:06.87 So let's go to John... the gospel of John. 00:17:06.97\00:17:08.64 Open your Bible up. Can you die of a broken heart? 00:17:08.94\00:17:11.80 John chapter 19. 00:17:12.10\00:17:13.97 You know, you read... If you read the Calvary story 00:17:14.67\00:17:17.90 every single morning of your life, 00:17:18.10\00:17:19.99 just weave it into your worship, 00:17:20.19\00:17:21.96 you could do a whole lot worse, couldn't you? 00:17:22.26\00:17:24.59 Remember that idea I got from Roger Morneau: 00:17:24.89\00:17:26.72 every day read the story of Calvary. 00:17:26.82\00:17:28.91 So I read it in Matthew 27 00:17:29.11\00:17:30.79 but you can rotate your way through the gospels. 00:17:30.99\00:17:32.86 If you were reading John, you might begin at the beginning 00:17:33.36\00:17:35.75 of chapter 19. This is John chapter 19 verse 1. 00:17:35.85\00:17:38.14 I'm in the New King James version. 00:17:38.25\00:17:39.66 Whatever translation you have that's fine by me. 00:17:40.67\00:17:43.18 Verse 1: "So then Pilate... " The Roman curator or the 00:17:43.38\00:17:47.10 governor... "took Jesus and scourged Him. " 00:17:47.30\00:17:50.29 It is a bloody and barbaric form of torture 00:17:50.50\00:17:54.85 pre execution. 00:17:55.05\00:17:56.89 A wooden handle with leather strips in it 00:17:57.20\00:17:59.36 bone, metal, and rock tied into the leather strands. 00:17:59.46\00:18:02.53 And the executioner will wrap those strands around your body - 00:18:02.76\00:18:05.78 you're naked - around your naked torso 00:18:05.98\00:18:08.70 and then yank it back and it's just like a shredder. 00:18:08.80\00:18:11.08 Just shreds open the human torso... the chest. 00:18:11.29\00:18:14.37 "So Pilate took Jesus and scourged Him. " 00:18:14.67\00:18:17.46 Verse 2: "And the soldiers twisted a crown of thorns 00:18:17.67\00:18:19.72 and put it on His head. And they put on Him a purple robe 00:18:19.92\00:18:22.86 and then they said: 'Hail, King of the Jews' 00:18:22.89\00:18:25.22 and they struck Him with their hands. " 00:18:25.33\00:18:27.01 Then verse 4: "Pilate went out again 00:18:27.15\00:18:29.39 and he said to the crowd" - to the rabble 00:18:29.49\00:18:31.54 screaming for His blood - 00:18:31.74\00:18:33.29 "behold I am bringing Him out to you that you may know 00:18:33.49\00:18:37.20 that I find no fault in Him. " 00:18:37.40\00:18:40.66 Hit the pause button right there. 00:18:40.96\00:18:42.56 Fascinating in the gospel of John. Just fascinating. 00:18:42.96\00:18:46.72 There are seven triples - seven trios - 00:18:46.92\00:18:49.80 seven treys... seven 3's - that are unique to the gospel 00:18:50.00\00:18:53.94 of John's account of the crucifixion 00:18:54.04\00:18:55.97 and I want to examine every one of these. 00:18:56.17\00:18:57.97 Seven threes that combine together with one compelling 00:18:58.17\00:19:02.19 truth that we must go home with today. 00:19:02.29\00:19:04.62 Trio #1: three times Pilate will announce to the rabble 00:19:05.80\00:19:11.79 what we just heard him say here in verse 4: 00:19:12.00\00:19:15.34 "I find no fault in Him. " 00:19:15.54\00:19:18.60 Three times: chapter 18 verse 38, 00:19:18.90\00:19:20.78 at the end of verse 38: "I find no fault in Him at all. " 00:19:20.98\00:19:23.32 Drop down to verse 6: Pilate said to them: 'You take 00:19:23.52\00:19:25.97 Him and crucify Him for I find no fault in Him. ' " 00:19:26.17\00:19:29.38 Three times... no fault. 00:19:29.58\00:19:31.74 What's John trying to tell us? Number 1: 00:19:32.04\00:19:34.52 the Roman judicial system found Him innocent. 00:19:35.93\00:19:40.78 The Jewish court - that rump court - found Him guilty. 00:19:41.01\00:19:44.22 And number 2: Pilate - who found no fault in Him - 00:19:44.89\00:19:48.90 is therefore just as culpable 00:19:49.10\00:19:51.63 as the clerics of Judaism for the death of Jesus. 00:19:51.83\00:19:54.73 He sent an innocent man to death. 00:19:55.03\00:19:57.44 "I find... " three times... "no fault in Him. " 00:19:57.64\00:20:00.02 That's trio number 1. 00:20:00.22\00:20:01.34 Now comes trio number 2. 00:20:01.64\00:20:03.62 Three titles given to Jesus in the gospel of John 00:20:04.02\00:20:07.75 before the cross. You remember the first time: 00:20:07.95\00:20:10.35 John chapter 1 verse 29 the Baptist... John the Baptist. 00:20:10.55\00:20:13.50 My friend Steve Bohr took us powerfully through that Elijah 00:20:13.70\00:20:16.91 motif. John the Baptist - John chapter 1 verse 29- 00:20:17.11\00:20:21.62 John the Baptist sees Jesus coming and he puts that finger 00:20:21.72\00:20:23.84 up in Harry Anderson's picture and he points that other finger 00:20:23.94\00:20:26.01 at Jesus and he thunders the words: "Behold the Lamb of God 00:20:26.11\00:20:30.38 who takes away the sin of the world. " 00:20:30.49\00:20:32.07 Title number 1. 00:20:32.17\00:20:33.74 Pilate now at the end of the gospel steps in for two more 00:20:34.04\00:20:36.53 titles. Verse 5: "Then Jesus came out... " 00:20:36.63\00:20:40.16 Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe 00:20:40.46\00:20:44.93 and His shredded skin. 00:20:44.96\00:20:47.41 "And Pilate said to them: 'Behold the... ' How does it go? 00:20:47.71\00:20:52.02 'Behold the man. ' " There's one more title. 00:20:52.12\00:20:54.81 Verse 13: "Then Pilate therefore heard that saying, 00:20:55.11\00:20:58.80 he brought Jesus out and he sat Him down in the judgment 00:20:58.90\00:21:01.30 seat in a place that is called The Pavement but in Hebrew 00:21:01.40\00:21:04.09 Gabbatha. Now it was the Preparation Day 00:21:04.29\00:21:06.70 of the Passover and about the sixth hour. 00:21:06.80\00:21:08.71 And he said to the Jews: 'Behold now... ' " What? 00:21:08.91\00:21:11.47 The King. 00:21:11.57\00:21:12.66 "Behold the Lamb, " "behold the Man, " 00:21:12.76\00:21:14.39 "behold the King. " Now the same language in the Greek. 00:21:14.49\00:21:16.68 Three titles. 00:21:16.88\00:21:17.91 The question is: it's not the title. Is He your Savior? 00:21:18.09\00:21:22.71 Is He your... is He REALLY your Savior? 00:21:22.91\00:21:26.98 Going to find out in a moment what that means if He is. 00:21:27.38\00:21:30.19 All right, seven threes. 00:21:30.49\00:21:33.00 Three no faults; three titles. 00:21:33.30\00:21:35.78 Jesus now stands: "Behold the King. " Stripped 00:21:37.01\00:21:40.24 in that cloak... that purple cloak. 00:21:40.44\00:21:42.88 I need to let Desire of Ages just intervene right here. 00:21:43.19\00:21:46.32 Ellen White there. Let me quote this... page 735: 00:21:46.43\00:21:49.26 "There stood the Son of God 00:21:49.46\00:21:51.85 wearing the robe of mockery and the crown of thorns 00:21:52.05\00:21:54.33 stripped to the waist, His back showing the long, cruel stripes 00:21:54.54\00:21:58.41 from which the blood flowed freely... " And I mean freely 00:21:58.61\00:22:02.15 when you've been shredded open. 00:22:02.35\00:22:04.18 "His face was stained with blood 00:22:05.21\00:22:07.09 and bore the marks of exhaustion and pain 00:22:07.30\00:22:09.77 but never had it appeared more beautiful than now. " 00:22:09.97\00:22:14.24 There was something in that face... 00:22:15.10\00:22:17.47 something in that face of beauty. 00:22:17.87\00:22:21.38 "Every feature expressed gentleness and resignation 00:22:22.64\00:22:25.80 and the tenderest pity for His cruel foes. 00:22:26.00\00:22:28.99 In His manner there was no cowardly weakness 00:22:29.29\00:22:31.46 but the strength and the dignity of longsuffering. 00:22:31.66\00:22:34.28 Even the priests and rulers were convicted 00:22:34.48\00:22:37.57 that He was all that He claimed to be. " 00:22:37.77\00:22:40.71 He IS the Son of God! 00:22:40.91\00:22:42.37 They knew it; they saw it; and they sensed it. 00:22:42.77\00:22:47.07 Three no faults. Number 2: three titles. 00:22:50.09\00:22:54.31 Here's trio number three languages. 00:22:54.51\00:22:58.41 Pick it up in verse 17. 00:22:58.61\00:23:00.28 "And He... " that would be Jesus... "bearing His cross. " 00:23:02.26\00:23:05.75 There's no Simon carrying the cross in John. 00:23:06.81\00:23:09.24 No Simon at all. Jesus carried the cross all by Himself. 00:23:09.34\00:23:14.29 We'll see why in a moment. 00:23:15.44\00:23:16.73 "And He, bearing His cross, went out to a place 00:23:17.13\00:23:19.89 called The Place of the Skull which is called in Hebrew 00:23:20.10\00:23:23.59 Golgotha. " Isn't that something? 00:23:23.69\00:23:25.59 Pilate sits on his judgment seat at Gabbatha. 00:23:26.55\00:23:29.95 God sits on His judgment seat at Golgotha... 00:23:30.25\00:23:33.86 the Supreme Judge now. 00:23:34.78\00:23:37.04 "So they went to a place called in Hebrew Golgotha 00:23:37.98\00:23:40.36 where they crucified Him and two others with Him 00:23:40.46\00:23:42.26 one on either side and Jesus in the center. 00:23:42.36\00:23:44.82 Now... " verse 19... "Pilate wrote a title that was put 00:23:45.03\00:23:47.42 on the cross and the writing was 00:23:47.53\00:23:49.17 JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS. 00:23:49.37\00:23:52.70 And many of the Jews read this title for the place 00:23:53.00\00:23:55.19 where Jesus was crucified was near the city. 00:23:55.29\00:23:57.27 And it was written in... " how many languages? 00:23:57.47\00:23:59.84 Hebrew or Aramaic depending on your translation... 00:24:00.14\00:24:02.68 Hebrew, Greek, and Latin. 00:24:02.98\00:24:07.08 Three languages. 00:24:07.38\00:24:09.09 Those were the three dominant languages 00:24:11.12\00:24:14.14 in the Mediterranean world at the time of Christ. 00:24:14.34\00:24:17.34 John inserts the little side... nobody else. 00:24:17.74\00:24:21.72 John inserts this side note that King... 00:24:21.92\00:24:25.12 JESUS, THE KING OF THE JEWS, is in the languages of the 00:24:25.36\00:24:28.93 Roman Empire. Already a huge hint 00:24:29.03\00:24:34.76 that the One who dies today is the universal King. 00:24:35.06\00:24:39.24 In any language He is the King 00:24:39.54\00:24:42.35 and the Jews are ticked. 00:24:42.65\00:24:46.08 They go to Pilate... where is this? 00:24:46.28\00:24:48.15 They go to Pilate in verse 21: 00:24:48.25\00:24:49.58 "Therefore the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate" 00:24:49.68\00:24:51.54 Huh, come on... "do not write the King of the Jews. 00:24:51.74\00:24:54.41 but you ought to write: "He said 'I am the King of the Jews. ' " 00:24:54.61\00:24:58.00 And Pilate now... A weak king, remember that? 00:24:58.20\00:25:01.11 We talked about that with Steve Bohr. 00:25:01.31\00:25:02.70 A weak king now steels himself 00:25:02.90\00:25:07.59 cold iron in his eyes and he says: 00:25:07.79\00:25:10.88 "What I have written I have written... 00:25:10.98\00:25:14.21 Adios. " 00:25:14.51\00:25:17.08 The hand of God in that wishy-washy Roman governor 00:25:17.58\00:25:21.43 made sure, locked in every language of the Empire, 00:25:21.63\00:25:24.62 the three dominant languages: "He's the King... 00:25:24.82\00:25:28.10 He IS the King. " 00:25:28.40\00:25:30.70 Seven trios. Trio number 4: 00:25:32.67\00:25:35.01 did you know that there are three Mary's at the cross? 00:25:35.21\00:25:38.85 Only John catches that. 00:25:39.05\00:25:40.37 Watch this... drop down to verse 25: 00:25:40.57\00:25:41.99 "Now there stood at the cross of Jesus His mother. " 00:25:42.19\00:25:44.50 What's His mother's name? Mary. 00:25:44.60\00:25:46.66 So... "there stood at the cross of Jesus His mother Mary, 00:25:46.90\00:25:50.21 and His mother's sister Mary the wife of Clopas, 00:25:50.42\00:25:53.79 and... " Another Mary and what's her name? "Mary Magdalene. " 00:25:53.99\00:25:57.42 By the way... three women at the cross. 00:25:59.49\00:26:04.12 Where are all of these big, tough, anointed 00:26:04.93\00:26:10.73 apostles? Where are they? 00:26:10.93\00:26:13.49 The only one from the apostolic band is a boy. 00:26:13.79\00:26:16.97 John Boy. You've got John Boy and three women. 00:26:17.27\00:26:21.15 John Boy and three women. 00:26:22.14\00:26:24.65 Isn't it something? 00:26:25.05\00:26:26.80 The women were there... where are the guys? 00:26:27.10\00:26:30.57 Hiding behind locked doors. 00:26:31.57\00:26:33.81 Three Mary's. 00:26:34.89\00:26:36.64 Seven treys... seven trios... triples. 00:26:37.77\00:26:43.59 This is trio now number 5. 00:26:44.71\00:26:47.21 The Christian world understands 00:26:47.91\00:26:51.57 and in fact I have gone through and numbered them 00:26:51.67\00:26:53.06 in my four gospels... The Christian world recognizes 00:26:53.16\00:26:56.03 that Jesus spoke seven times from the cross. 00:26:56.23\00:26:58.56 Seven... They're called "the seven last words of Christ. " 00:26:58.86\00:27:00.96 You've heard that? Of course. 00:27:01.06\00:27:02.47 Three of the seven are here in John. 00:27:02.67\00:27:05.75 Three words... there's another trio. 00:27:05.95\00:27:08.74 Three words that Jesus speaks from the cross. 00:27:09.04\00:27:11.29 OK, John has just identified the three Mary's. 00:27:12.47\00:27:15.37 Now here comes that... the first word from the cross 00:27:15.57\00:27:18.70 in John - verse 26: 00:27:18.90\00:27:20.35 "When Jesus therefore saw His mother 00:27:20.66\00:27:23.75 and the disciple whom He loved... " 00:27:24.05\00:27:25.98 The Greek rendition of "disciples whom He loved" 00:27:26.18\00:27:28.42 is "the disciple He kept on loving. " 00:27:28.62\00:27:31.83 John never identifies himself in the entire gospel. 00:27:32.13\00:27:37.03 He has this little cryptic line 00:27:37.27\00:27:39.99 which is really a line of utter humility: 00:27:40.19\00:27:43.03 "I'm the one that Jesus kept on loving. 00:27:43.33\00:27:46.03 He could have quit but He kept on loving. " 00:27:46.33\00:27:49.17 So Jesus looks down from the cross... 00:27:50.31\00:27:52.90 He saw His mother. Mother's Day was what? A month ago? 00:27:53.10\00:27:56.68 Is your mother still alive? 00:27:56.98\00:27:59.16 Do you think of your mother 00:27:59.76\00:28:01.79 like the Lord thought of His mother? 00:28:02.09\00:28:05.52 Your mother is closer to death than you are. 00:28:05.72\00:28:08.48 That woman 00:28:11.18\00:28:13.02 that God used to bring you into this life 00:28:14.13\00:28:17.63 deserves your gratitude 00:28:17.83\00:28:20.87 no matter how she may have treated you. 00:28:20.97\00:28:23.86 Jesus looked down on His mother 00:28:25.52\00:28:28.05 and He sees the disciple whom He loved standing beside her 00:28:28.25\00:28:30.90 and He said to His mother: "Woman, 00:28:31.10\00:28:33.29 behold your son. " 00:28:33.49\00:28:35.04 Can he point? No, He's doing this all with His head. 00:28:35.24\00:28:37.17 He said: "Woman, behold your son. " 00:28:37.37\00:28:39.23 And then He said to the disciple 00:28:40.87\00:28:42.80 "Behold... behold your mother. " 00:28:43.01\00:28:45.50 John knew exactly what He was saying. 00:28:45.80\00:28:47.62 And from that hour that young John Boy took her 00:28:48.75\00:28:52.46 Mary... mother Mary... into his own home. 00:28:52.66\00:28:55.72 Desire of Ages says for the rest of his life 00:28:56.02\00:28:58.23 while she lived she was a perpetual reminder 00:28:58.33\00:29:01.52 of his Lord and Savior. 00:29:01.72\00:29:03.35 Her Lord and Savior too, by the way. Yeah. 00:29:03.55\00:29:07.10 Three Mary's... three words. 00:29:07.92\00:29:10.88 There's the first word, now here comes the second word. 00:29:10.98\00:29:13.15 Verse 28: "And after this Jesus, knowing that all things now 00:29:13.35\00:29:15.97 were accomplished that the scripture might be fulfilled. " 00:29:16.07\00:29:19.30 And what scripture would that be? That would be Psalm 22. 00:29:19.40\00:29:22.16 Two nights ago you and I lived Psalm 22. 00:29:22.36\00:29:24.40 The cryptic clue to the heartbreaking mental anguish 00:29:24.43\00:29:30.41 on that center cross: "My God, My God, 00:29:30.54\00:29:32.94 why have You forsaken Me? " 00:29:33.04\00:29:34.13 John says not a word... not a word from Psalm 22. 00:29:34.33\00:29:37.39 Matthew talks about it, Mark talks... John? Not a word. 00:29:37.59\00:29:40.64 This is his only nod to that Messianic song. 00:29:40.84\00:29:43.69 He pulls the line out about Jesus' thirst. 00:29:43.89\00:29:46.18 "And after this Jesus, knowing that all things were 00:29:46.48\00:29:48.30 accomplished now and that scripture might be fulfilled. " 00:29:48.40\00:29:50.98 What scripture? The one He's praying through 00:29:51.18\00:29:52.72 under His breath. Remember? 00:29:52.82\00:29:53.89 Praying through that prayer under His breath 00:29:54.09\00:29:56.24 Jesus now says: "I thirst. " 00:29:56.45\00:29:59.39 Word number 2 in John's crucifixion account. 00:29:59.69\00:30:03.09 And now verse 29: "A vessel full of sour wine 00:30:03.29\00:30:06.24 was sitting there and they filled a sponge with sour wine 00:30:06.34\00:30:08.42 and they put it on a hyssop and they rubbed it against His 00:30:08.62\00:30:10.50 mouth. And when Jesus... " His lips were now moistened. 00:30:10.60\00:30:14.81 "When Jesus had received the sour wine... " 00:30:15.01\00:30:17.71 Here comes word number 3: "He said... " 00:30:17.81\00:30:20.25 What did He say? 00:30:20.45\00:30:21.80 "It is finished! " 00:30:22.00\00:30:25.48 "And bowing His head He gave up His spirit. " 00:30:27.50\00:30:31.86 Three last words. 00:30:33.66\00:30:35.84 Seven triples... seven triples in the fourth gospel. 00:30:36.24\00:30:40.56 Isn't it something that Jesus begins the fourth gospel 00:30:41.72\00:30:44.69 thirsty in John 4. 00:30:44.89\00:30:47.26 A Samaritan woman comes along and He says: "Woman, 00:30:47.56\00:30:50.08 I need something to drink. " 00:30:50.18\00:30:51.96 The same gospel will now end with Jesus asking 00:30:52.36\00:30:56.22 some pagan soldiers: "Anybody have anything to drink? 00:30:56.42\00:31:00.94 I'm thirsty. " 00:31:01.14\00:31:02.47 John, who accentuates not only Jesus' divinity 00:31:02.67\00:31:06.58 but upholds His humanity as well - the "thirsty One. " 00:31:06.78\00:31:10.37 Trio number 6: three actions from the cross. 00:31:12.36\00:31:16.77 This is one you wouldn't catch unless you examined it closely. 00:31:16.97\00:31:20.95 Jesus takes three actions from the cross. 00:31:21.15\00:31:24.67 Remember a moment ago John leaves out Simon the Cyrenian 00:31:24.87\00:31:28.42 picking up the cross? You remember that? 00:31:28.62\00:31:30.29 The others all mention... only John leaves out... 00:31:30.69\00:31:34.00 leaves out Simon. Do you know why? 00:31:34.20\00:31:35.85 Because in John his passionate intent 00:31:36.25\00:31:39.93 is to teach the truth that Jesus is in control 00:31:40.13\00:31:43.74 till His very last breath. 00:31:43.94\00:31:46.88 He's not a wimp; He's not the defeated foe. 00:31:47.18\00:31:50.51 He IS the King in 3 languages, 00:31:50.71\00:31:52.39 the languages of the Mediterranean. 00:31:52.49\00:31:54.06 He IS the King... He's the universal King 00:31:54.26\00:31:56.71 and He's in control all the way through His life. 00:31:56.91\00:32:00.27 He controls the time of His death. Amen! 00:32:00.37\00:32:02.34 John wants to show that Jesus is not caught 00:32:02.54\00:32:07.12 by circumstances in a corner. He has chosen all of this 00:32:07.32\00:32:11.11 and He's in control. So John doesn't say a word about Simon. 00:32:11.31\00:32:13.86 Jesus carries His own cross, thank you. 00:32:13.96\00:32:16.37 Number 2: the second action. 00:32:17.36\00:32:19.39 John shows Jesus choosing His death cry. 00:32:19.59\00:32:23.12 "It is finished! " And then 00:32:24.26\00:32:27.38 John for the third action shows Jesus controlling 00:32:27.58\00:32:31.50 His time of death. Now we just read it but you didn't catch it. 00:32:31.60\00:32:34.64 I want you to note that again. 00:32:34.74\00:32:36.58 We'll read that death cry here in verse 30. 00:32:36.68\00:32:39.10 "So when Jesus had received the sour wine He said: 00:32:39.30\00:32:41.78 'It is finished! ' " And now notice the line: 00:32:41.98\00:32:44.38 "And bowing His head He gave up His spirit. " 00:32:44.58\00:32:47.86 Now ladies and gentlemen, when you and I die 00:32:48.06\00:32:50.36 it'll be like this. If Jesus doesn't come soon 00:32:50.56\00:32:52.80 we will all die. If we're conscious when we die, 00:32:52.90\00:32:57.15 it will be like this. When we come to that moment of death 00:32:57.35\00:33:01.25 we could be talking to somebody. We could be in the middle 00:33:01.35\00:33:03.73 of a prayer. We could be in the middle of sleep. 00:33:03.83\00:33:06.60 But all of a sudden our breath will stop 00:33:07.42\00:33:10.80 and our head will drop 00:33:11.20\00:33:13.52 if we're sitting up. Isn't that right? 00:33:13.82\00:33:15.30 Yeah. The breath stops then the head drops. 00:33:15.50\00:33:18.70 Did you just notice what you read? 00:33:18.90\00:33:20.75 Jesus lowers His head and then says: 00:33:21.67\00:33:26.31 "This is My last breath. " 00:33:26.61\00:33:28.57 He's in control to the very end. 00:33:28.87\00:33:33.22 And if He can control His life to the very end 00:33:33.42\00:33:36.93 do you suppose He could do the same for your life 00:33:37.13\00:33:41.00 if you let Him? Huh? Yes! 00:33:41.20\00:33:43.55 Don't you suppose He can? 00:33:43.85\00:33:46.05 He's the Master of the universe. 00:33:46.35\00:33:47.87 In every language He's the King of kings and Lord of lords 00:33:47.97\00:33:51.30 and He is in control. 00:33:51.50\00:33:54.77 Seven trios... seven trios in one gospel. 00:33:54.97\00:34:00.35 Unique to John there's a seventh one. 00:34:00.59\00:34:03.57 Only John mentions this seventh one as well. 00:34:03.78\00:34:06.73 There are three woundings of Jesus. 00:34:07.74\00:34:11.21 Wounding number 1 we noted a moment ago when we were reading 00:34:11.51\00:34:13.91 in chapter 19. You remember the scourging? 00:34:14.01\00:34:15.79 Just was shredded. OK, that's the first bloodshed. 00:34:15.99\00:34:18.71 Number 1. Wounding number when they yank His arms out. 00:34:19.65\00:34:24.07 Last night we heard Luke record Jesus' prayer as they are 00:34:24.38\00:34:28.26 pinning Him to that cross. "Father, forgive them... 00:34:28.36\00:34:31.11 they don't know what they're doing. " 00:34:31.31\00:34:32.89 That's wounding number 2, but only John has wounding #3. 00:34:33.09\00:34:37.08 Read it with me please. 00:34:38.34\00:34:40.16 Let's read it right here in... Let's just pick it up 00:34:41.26\00:34:44.05 in verse 30 again. "So when Jesus had received the sour wine 00:34:44.15\00:34:46.70 He said: 'It is finished! ' 00:34:46.90\00:34:48.76 and bowing His head He gave up His spirit. 00:34:49.06\00:34:51.12 Therefore, because it was the Preparation Day... " 00:34:51.22\00:34:54.90 What day of the week would that be? Just refresh my memory. 00:34:55.00\00:34:57.08 What day of the week do we call good when it's 00:34:57.28\00:34:58.96 the Passion Weekend? What's the day of the week we call good? 00:34:59.06\00:35:01.63 We are absolutely convinced that Friday is "good Friday" 00:35:01.93\00:35:05.49 and we're absolutely convinced that resurrection Sunday 00:35:05.79\00:35:08.44 is Sunday, so we're going to find out in one split second 00:35:08.64\00:35:13.41 what's the day between. 00:35:13.51\00:35:15.38 "Therefore because it was the Preparation Day... " 00:35:15.79\00:35:18.07 that awful Friday that we now call good... 00:35:18.28\00:35:20.37 "that the body should not remain on the cross on the Sabbath 00:35:20.57\00:35:23.06 for that Sabbath was a high day... " It was a feast Sabbath. 00:35:23.26\00:35:26.50 "the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken 00:35:26.70\00:35:29.11 that they might be taken away. " 00:35:29.14\00:35:30.94 The reason you break their legs... I used to think 00:35:31.14\00:35:33.06 "Well they wanted to break their legs 00:35:33.16\00:35:34.19 so they couldn't run away. " 00:35:34.22\00:35:35.65 It has nothing to do with running away. 00:35:36.55\00:35:38.22 Because you're dying in a barbaric form of strangulation 00:35:38.42\00:35:42.48 you get weaker and weaker. 00:35:42.78\00:35:44.95 You're having to put all your weight on your shins 00:35:45.25\00:35:47.49 to lift yourself. And when you put your weight 00:35:47.59\00:35:50.60 to your legs it produces this red-hot searing pain 00:35:50.80\00:35:55.21 that shoots through your body. 00:35:55.31\00:35:56.38 Hence the Latin word excruciatus 00:35:56.58\00:35:58.84 which means from out of the cross whence comes our word 00:35:59.04\00:36:01.33 excruciating. 00:36:01.54\00:36:02.86 So in order to hasten death what they do is 00:36:03.06\00:36:05.91 they break the shins. They just shatter both legs. 00:36:06.11\00:36:09.02 You don't have the pain threshold now to even 00:36:09.32\00:36:13.10 push yourself up. It's just... it's over. 00:36:13.20\00:36:16.75 And so because you're hanging down and you can't 00:36:17.05\00:36:19.69 raise yourself you drown... you drown in your body fluids. 00:36:19.80\00:36:23.40 You just stop... you asphyxiate. 00:36:23.51\00:36:26.00 You just stop breathing. 00:36:26.20\00:36:27.55 So that's what they asked: "Pilate, come on. Get these 00:36:28.86\00:36:31.09 bodies off. We've got a big... " 00:36:31.19\00:36:32.70 Can you imagine that? We are right about which day 00:36:32.90\00:36:34.85 of the week is the Sabbath but we have just crucified 00:36:34.95\00:36:38.56 the Lord of the Sabbath. 00:36:38.66\00:36:40.23 Boy, that's a reminder. 00:36:40.54\00:36:41.97 That is a reminder to Sabbatarians the likes of you 00:36:42.27\00:36:44.97 and me. We can be absolutely right about the day of worship 00:36:45.07\00:36:48.29 and be wrong about the Jesus of that Sabbath. 00:36:48.49\00:36:51.05 You think just because you have the seventh day down pat 00:36:52.11\00:36:54.88 that you have a one-way ticket to eternity? 00:36:55.08\00:36:58.31 There is no Sabbath keeping that will get you into eternity. 00:36:58.41\00:37:00.87 Not a single day of Sabbath keeping. 00:37:01.07\00:37:03.15 It's only the Lord of the Sabbath who will get you 00:37:03.46\00:37:06.05 into eternity. And if you have the day of the Lord right 00:37:06.15\00:37:10.18 but you're wrong about the Lord of the day 00:37:10.28\00:37:12.50 you are as lost as anybody else. 00:37:12.80\00:37:16.08 Let us not be as foolish as the Jews and hide behind 00:37:16.28\00:37:19.33 our Sabbatarian orthodoxy and believe that God has to 00:37:19.53\00:37:23.89 save me because I'm keeping the Sabbath. 00:37:23.99\00:37:25.98 He doesn't have to save a single soul, 00:37:26.18\00:37:28.13 but out of His goodness and His love for you and me 00:37:29.21\00:37:32.03 you take the Savior... you'll have salvation. Amen! 00:37:33.16\00:37:37.61 "What are you saying, Dwight? Are you against the Sabbath? " 00:37:37.84\00:37:40.10 Give me a break. 00:37:40.23\00:37:41.66 I preached in Net '98, 40 languages around the world. 00:37:42.85\00:37:46.05 Don't you talk to me about what I believe. 00:37:46.15\00:37:48.53 Listen to me carefully: the day won't save a single soul. 00:37:48.73\00:37:52.49 The Pharisees hurried home to keep the Sabbath 00:37:52.80\00:37:55.52 and they just killed the God of this universe. 00:37:55.72\00:37:58.20 Something's wrong about Sabbath keeping like that. 00:37:58.50\00:38:01.17 Something is terribly wrong about getting the Sabbath right 00:38:01.37\00:38:04.12 and you kill God in the process. 00:38:04.23\00:38:06.58 That just cannot be right... cannot be. 00:38:06.78\00:38:09.37 Which means you can't be saved by your Sabbath keeping. 00:38:09.70\00:38:12.50 You will be saved by your Savior, trusting... 00:38:12.80\00:38:15.67 and there is a difference. 00:38:15.87\00:38:17.56 So they come. 00:38:20.12\00:38:21.74 Say: "Pilate, come on, get these bodies off. 00:38:21.94\00:38:23.29 It's almost sundown. Please! " 00:38:23.39\00:38:25.28 Verse 32: "Then the soldiers came and broke the legs 00:38:25.58\00:38:27.85 of the first... " that would be the thief... 00:38:27.95\00:38:29.67 "and of the other who was crucified with Him. " 00:38:29.77\00:38:31.44 Shattered those bones. 00:38:31.64\00:38:33.76 "But... " verse 33... "when they came to Jesus 00:38:33.96\00:38:37.34 and saw... 'Mercy, He's already dead... 00:38:37.54\00:38:42.08 Unusual... He's dead... ' " 00:38:42.28\00:38:44.72 He picked the time, the moment of His death by the way. 00:38:45.02\00:38:47.75 "But when they came to Jesus and saw that He was already dead 00:38:48.05\00:38:51.42 they did not break His legs. But one of the soldiers 00:38:51.62\00:38:54.37 instead pierced His side with a spear. " 00:38:54.47\00:38:57.51 Just to make sure. They're not going to bury a living man. 00:38:57.81\00:39:03.04 And John Boy who was there - 00:39:04.19\00:39:05.69 the only eyewitness of the disciples - 00:39:05.89\00:39:09.25 And John Boy wrote, verse 35: "And he who has seen 00:39:09.56\00:39:13.58 has testified and his testimony is true 00:39:13.78\00:39:16.80 and he knows that he's telling the truth 00:39:16.91\00:39:18.37 so that you may believe. 00:39:18.57\00:39:21.20 For these things were done that the scriptures should be 00:39:21.41\00:39:26.73 fulfilled: 'Not one of His bones shall be broken. ' " 00:39:26.83\00:39:28.94 Verse 37: "And again another scripture says 00:39:29.24\00:39:31.68 they shall look upon Him whom they pierced. " 00:39:31.78\00:39:34.86 Now notice verse 34: 00:39:35.26\00:39:37.83 When that spear pierced the pericardial sac 00:39:38.03\00:39:43.02 of the heart, what did John Boy see come spilling out 00:39:43.22\00:39:47.85 of that open chest? What came spilling out 00:39:48.05\00:39:51.45 of that chest. Tell me what your Bible says. 00:39:51.65\00:39:54.20 What does your Bible say? 00:39:54.40\00:39:56.41 Blood and water. The third wounding 00:39:56.61\00:40:00.14 shown only in the gospel... the fourth gospel. 00:40:00.34\00:40:03.35 Blood and water. Isn't that amazing? 00:40:03.55\00:40:06.21 John... John begins his gospel with Jesus 00:40:06.51\00:40:09.23 turning the water into wine 00:40:09.43\00:40:12.71 and he ends his gospel with Jesus taking a sip of wine 00:40:12.91\00:40:16.72 and it's now water. 00:40:16.92\00:40:19.55 Blood and water... wine and water. 00:40:21.99\00:40:26.35 Sacrifice and death. 00:40:27.55\00:40:29.80 All of it wrapped up in that graphic image 00:40:30.20\00:40:34.98 of the chest slit open and then this clear 00:40:35.18\00:40:39.20 liquid alongside the trickling, coagulating blood. 00:40:39.30\00:40:44.99 "I saw it... " "He who saw these things 00:40:45.96\00:40:49.77 testifies. " 00:40:49.97\00:40:52.08 Seven trios... one compelling truth. 00:40:53.33\00:40:59.28 You say: "Dwight, get to the compelling truth, please. 00:40:59.48\00:41:02.08 What is the compelling truth? " 00:41:02.18\00:41:03.68 Well... 00:41:04.08\00:41:05.70 because we are a highly convictional community - 00:41:08.45\00:41:14.38 I say that with gratitude to God... 00:41:14.58\00:41:17.96 In a highly convictional community like ours 00:41:20.29\00:41:23.08 where right living and right behaving are rightfully 00:41:24.02\00:41:27.96 emphasized, there is the possibility - 00:41:28.16\00:41:33.26 not so small - that we may live with a sense of numinous 00:41:33.46\00:41:38.73 apprehension, latent uncertainty about our salvation. 00:41:38.94\00:41:44.86 I have a blessed grandmother who sleeps in Jesus. 00:41:46.20\00:41:50.39 She lived to be 99... almost 100. 00:41:50.49\00:41:52.86 Preacher's wife. General Conference VP's wife. 00:41:53.16\00:41:57.21 Missionary wife. 00:41:57.51\00:41:59.57 I used to come out and visit her in Loma Linda 00:42:01.82\00:42:04.05 while pastoring at Pioneer. 00:42:04.25\00:42:06.26 And every now and then Grandma would say to me: 00:42:06.47\00:42:09.16 "Dwight, how do we know for sure? 00:42:09.36\00:42:14.06 How do we know for sure that it's OK? " 00:42:15.99\00:42:19.75 The only reason I mention my Grandmother is because 00:42:20.81\00:42:23.06 in my short life of pastoring I've found that it's true 00:42:23.16\00:42:26.29 the older you get sometimes the more uncertain you become. 00:42:26.49\00:42:31.92 When you're young it's... I admit, I say it's all by faith. 00:42:32.42\00:42:36.11 I understand that. But when death starts becoming 00:42:36.22\00:42:39.23 and ever-present reality 00:42:39.33\00:42:42.33 you start re-negotiating life. 00:42:42.53\00:42:45.09 You start re-thinking: "What is it that really counts? " 00:42:45.39\00:42:49.05 And in a highly-convictional community like ours 00:42:49.25\00:42:52.40 where right behaving is rightfully emphasized 00:42:52.60\00:42:55.56 you begin to wonder: "I wonder if I behaved right enough 00:42:55.86\00:43:00.96 long enough? 00:43:01.16\00:43:02.56 Maybe... maybe this isn't quite as sure as I once thought. " 00:43:02.76\00:43:08.16 That's the community I love and that I've grown up in. 00:43:10.59\00:43:13.76 You don't need to give me any lectures about it. 00:43:13.96\00:43:15.65 I'm a 5th generation Adventist 00:43:15.75\00:43:17.34 and a 4th generation preacher within this community. 00:43:17.54\00:43:20.29 I know it well. 00:43:20.49\00:43:21.99 I'm telling you that the older you get sometimes 00:43:23.01\00:43:26.40 the more difficult that certainty can feel. 00:43:26.80\00:43:31.18 I had the joy of being able to visit with Grandma 00:43:32.56\00:43:35.18 and assure her that the gospel is the gospel. 00:43:35.28\00:43:38.21 But I want to draw your attention to something in that 00:43:39.29\00:43:41.37 little phrase... that last word of Jesus in John: 00:43:41.47\00:43:44.34 "It is finished! " 00:43:44.44\00:43:46.34 Now I want you to listen now how the Greek actually reads. 00:43:46.44\00:43:48.92 It's in the perfect tense and it reads like this - 00:43:49.12\00:43:51.90 it can be rightfully translated: "It has been completed. " 00:43:52.13\00:43:57.98 "It has been completed. " 00:43:58.77\00:44:00.77 OK? Completed. 00:44:00.97\00:44:02.99 It takes a past action to show that the past action 00:44:04.67\00:44:09.79 still has continuing effects in the present. 00:44:10.09\00:44:12.84 But the action is in the past and it's all done back there. 00:44:13.04\00:44:15.83 It would be like you getting a Fed-Ex envelope 00:44:16.13\00:44:18.57 to your house and you discover 00:44:18.77\00:44:21.23 a great uncle that you never knew, never met... 00:44:22.33\00:44:25.47 Well you knew about him, you'd heard about him, but 00:44:25.67\00:44:27.56 you get this Fed-Ex envelope from a law firm that is 00:44:27.66\00:44:31.16 representing your great uncle who died 2 or 3 years ago. 00:44:31.26\00:44:34.18 They finally found you! 00:44:34.48\00:44:36.71 He has willed his entire estate to you. 00:44:37.92\00:44:41.45 $3.3 billion to you. 00:44:41.96\00:44:45.74 Give me more uncles like that I say! 00:44:49.23\00:44:51.77 He has willed his entire estate to you. 00:44:53.24\00:44:55.40 They've been looking for you everywhere. 00:44:55.60\00:44:57.13 It was signed, sealed, notarized. 00:44:57.71\00:45:02.28 All handled. They finally found you 00:45:02.48\00:45:05.81 and they announce to you: "If you want this, 00:45:06.48\00:45:09.33 that $3.3 billion from back then that was ratified, 00:45:09.63\00:45:12.81 you get it now. " Ladies and gentlemen, that's what this 00:45:13.01\00:45:16.02 tense in the Greek means. 00:45:16.12\00:45:17.92 Something done long ago still is having present effect 00:45:18.22\00:45:23.37 today. And why is it having present effect? 00:45:23.57\00:45:26.42 Because a man comes along and finds out about Jesus. 00:45:26.62\00:45:28.85 A woman comes along, a child comes along, 00:45:28.95\00:45:30.59 a boy comes along, a teenager comes along, 00:45:30.80\00:45:32.81 finds out about Jesus. And the moment that discovery is made 00:45:33.01\00:45:35.87 what was done 2,000 years ago now leaps into life again. 00:45:36.07\00:45:40.13 Past action with present continuing effect. 00:45:40.43\00:45:44.17 When Jesus cries out "It is finished! " 00:45:45.01\00:45:49.51 the word is just like John 3:16 declares 00:45:51.21\00:45:55.72 all we have to do is trust our benefactor, 00:45:55.92\00:46:00.18 believe that the will is ratified, 00:46:00.38\00:46:03.17 and whatever provision is in that will belongs to us. 00:46:03.37\00:46:06.69 Now listen carefully: 00:46:06.99\00:46:08.59 "It is finished! " means that we can rest secure in Jesus' 00:46:10.63\00:46:14.64 mission and work at the cross. 00:46:14.74\00:46:17.08 Now hold on, hold on, hold on. 00:46:17.38\00:46:18.81 What counts is not my unfinished work. 00:46:19.61\00:46:23.58 What matters is His finished work. Amen! 00:46:24.52\00:46:30.38 That's what counts. 00:46:30.51\00:46:31.54 Not me... but Him. 00:46:31.94\00:46:35.06 You see, if we keep insisting what counts is what I do 00:46:35.27\00:46:39.97 then we have the Medieval notion of the universe. 00:46:40.17\00:46:44.33 You remember the old Medieval scholars - we're talking about 00:46:44.46\00:46:46.52 religious scholars and scientists as well... 00:46:46.63\00:46:49.69 they believed that the earth was the center of the universe. 00:46:49.89\00:46:52.16 True or false? Well, that's what they believed. 00:46:52.36\00:46:54.43 And that the whole universe rotated around the earth. 00:46:54.63\00:46:56.81 They had an earth-centered universe. 00:46:57.01\00:46:59.65 And then along comes a scientist called Galileo and he goes 00:46:59.95\00:47:02.51 "Well I've got to focus. Good night, is this true? 00:47:02.71\00:47:05.62 Gentlemen, excuse me. I found something out today. 00:47:05.72\00:47:09.06 We're not the center of the universe. 00:47:09.49\00:47:11.11 The sun is the center of our solar system. 00:47:11.31\00:47:13.29 We go around the sun; it does not go around us. " 00:47:13.69\00:47:16.90 People who believe that their present action is going to 00:47:17.81\00:47:21.10 determine their salvation don't live in a Son-centered universe. 00:47:21.20\00:47:26.41 They have put themselves in the center of the universe 00:47:26.81\00:47:30.59 and they have the Son going around them. 00:47:30.79\00:47:33.74 That is dead wrong. 00:47:34.58\00:47:36.78 The Son is in the middle... we go around Him. 00:47:37.74\00:47:41.76 What He has done is what counts. 00:47:42.57\00:47:46.11 What He has accomplished 00:47:46.71\00:47:49.14 is what matters 00:47:51.03\00:47:53.50 because, look... come on, come on, come on. 00:47:53.80\00:47:54.88 If I am the center of my universe 00:47:54.98\00:47:57.54 and the Son goes around me, 00:47:57.57\00:47:59.52 knowing how weak and faulty I am, what kind of assurance 00:47:59.56\00:48:03.80 am I going to have when I come up to the day I die 00:48:03.90\00:48:06.18 if I have to depend on how Dwight has handled his life? " 00:48:06.38\00:48:08.73 What kind of assurance will I have? Zero, nada, nothing. 00:48:08.93\00:48:11.11 I mean I'm messed up. 00:48:11.21\00:48:12.50 But if I take me out of the center of the picture 00:48:13.46\00:48:15.87 and I put the Son in the center and my life now rotates, 00:48:15.97\00:48:18.81 revolves, orbits around Him, 00:48:19.01\00:48:21.06 what kind of security do I now have? 00:48:21.26\00:48:23.20 I have all the security in the universe because it's 00:48:23.40\00:48:25.04 wrapped up in the One who is the center of my universe: 00:48:25.14\00:48:28.16 the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:48:29.06\00:48:30.78 When Jesus cries out: "It has been accomplished! " 00:48:31.08\00:48:34.06 "It has been done! " He is saying: "It really was done. " 00:48:34.26\00:48:39.40 "It is finished! " means it really is finished! 00:48:40.41\00:48:44.62 Finished... or He wasn't telling the truth in His last breath. 00:48:46.32\00:48:51.81 You come to me and you say: "No, Dwight, 00:48:53.79\00:48:56.04 no, no, no, no, no, no, no... 00:48:56.34\00:48:58.12 I've got to do something here. " 00:48:58.42\00:49:01.34 Of course you do something. 00:49:01.74\00:49:03.27 You respond to the One who finished the work 00:49:03.47\00:49:05.48 and you respond in gratitude. Do you not? 00:49:05.68\00:49:08.09 Of course. 00:49:08.59\00:49:10.00 That's why it's no accident by the way that in John - 00:49:10.40\00:49:12.80 only in John - he makes this big point about 00:49:13.00\00:49:17.23 the day that is coming on. 00:49:17.53\00:49:19.75 This is the Preparation Day and the day to follow the 00:49:20.05\00:49:22.14 Preparation Day would be the... the seventh-day Sabbath. 00:49:22.24\00:49:24.97 The Sabbath of creation. 00:49:25.07\00:49:26.26 John inserts that right after "It is finished! " 00:49:26.46\00:49:29.03 so that we'll be instantly reminded that even as it was 00:49:29.23\00:49:31.68 in creation God did His crowning work 00:49:31.78\00:49:34.68 on the sixth day. Looked it over and said: "Whaa... this 00:49:34.88\00:49:38.07 is VERY good. " Finished His work on the sixth day 00:49:38.17\00:49:41.69 then rested on the seventh. 00:49:41.90\00:49:43.78 By the way, can you add to God's creation? 00:49:45.17\00:49:47.40 What God finished on the sixth day of creation: 00:49:47.70\00:49:49.99 can you add to it? 00:49:50.19\00:49:51.45 "I want to add just a little more, God. " 00:49:51.66\00:49:52.75 Can you? Impossible! 00:49:52.95\00:49:54.36 Even as it was in creation God's climactic work 00:49:54.66\00:49:59.43 is done on the 6th day... then He rests. 00:49:59.63\00:50:02.32 Even so in salvation, His work is done on the 6th day 00:50:02.42\00:50:05.87 and then - Hallelujah! - He rests. 00:50:06.07\00:50:10.14 And by the way, He says: "You enter My rest. " 00:50:10.34\00:50:12.55 "You go into... you rest with Me. " 00:50:12.85\00:50:14.81 If I can't add an atom to God's creation, 00:50:15.45\00:50:19.38 can I add an iota to His salvation? 00:50:19.68\00:50:23.76 I cannot... that's John's point. 00:50:24.06\00:50:26.70 "It is finished! " really means it is finished. 00:50:26.90\00:50:31.52 By the way, that's also why John shows the blood 00:50:34.33\00:50:37.36 and the water. Because you see the sacrifice of the Lamb of God 00:50:37.57\00:50:41.29 covers the past. Covers your past... washes it clean. 00:50:41.49\00:50:46.04 The blood covers the past. 00:50:46.24\00:50:48.64 The water trickles right beside the blood 00:50:48.94\00:50:50.96 because I keep getting dirty. 00:50:51.16\00:50:53.00 I keep getting stained. 00:50:53.11\00:50:56.82 And the water now is the present gift of the washing that goes on 00:50:57.12\00:51:01.70 until Jesus comes. I'm covered in the past; 00:51:01.90\00:51:04.41 I'm washed in the present; 00:51:04.61\00:51:06.56 and I'm looking forward to the future. 00:51:06.66\00:51:09.13 Amen! It's all wrapped up in Jesus. 00:51:09.43\00:51:11.77 It's all wrapped up in Jesus. 00:51:12.27\00:51:14.75 Apparently, "It is finished! " 00:51:15.05\00:51:18.41 really means it is finished. 00:51:18.61\00:51:23.38 So dear Grandma, dear Grandpa, 00:51:25.59\00:51:29.94 dear middle-ager, 00:51:32.23\00:51:34.48 Boomer, dear young adult, 00:51:35.35\00:51:39.77 dear teenager... What you did last night 00:51:41.27\00:51:46.55 matters... but last night is past 00:51:49.04\00:51:55.01 and God has offered a sacrifice to cover that past. 00:51:57.17\00:52:02.55 What you do today? It matters. 00:52:05.64\00:52:09.27 And God has unleashed... 00:52:10.17\00:52:12.10 There is a fountain filled with blood 00:52:12.50\00:52:15.72 drawn from Emmanuel's veins. 00:52:15.92\00:52:18.50 And sinners plunged beneath that flood 00:52:18.71\00:52:22.21 lose all their guilty stains. 00:52:22.41\00:52:26.77 Dear Grandma, dear Grandma, you go ahead and die. 00:52:27.27\00:52:31.28 When Jesus is ready for you to breathe your last, 00:52:31.58\00:52:34.25 He'll decide. 00:52:34.45\00:52:36.01 Unlike Him, we won't choose when the last breath will be. 00:52:36.41\00:52:39.99 He'll choose. But Grandma, when you come to your death 00:52:40.29\00:52:44.36 you can breathe that last breath of release 00:52:44.76\00:52:49.39 into the nail-scarred embrace of One who promises you 00:52:50.62\00:52:55.22 "I really did finish your salvation 00:52:55.52\00:53:00.79 on Calvary. " Amen! "I finished it. " 00:53:00.99\00:53:04.70 "Yes, I am your High Priest. 00:53:04.90\00:53:06.65 Yes, I minister for you now 00:53:06.85\00:53:08.57 but I finished your salvation 2,000 years ago. 00:53:08.77\00:53:12.91 Girl, woman, boy, man: 00:53:13.21\00:53:17.00 rest in Me... be at peace 00:53:17.30\00:53:21.36 because 'It is finished! ' really means 00:53:21.66\00:53:26.14 it is finished. " Amen! 00:53:26.44\00:53:31.08 Let's pray. 00:53:31.28\00:53:33.08 Oh Jesus, holy Father, holy Son, 00:53:34.34\00:53:38.35 oh we hurry through these stories. 00:53:40.54\00:53:43.74 We're moved, we're blessed for that split moment 00:53:43.85\00:53:47.61 that we pause, but so much embedded in all four gospels. 00:53:47.71\00:53:52.88 And dear God, in this gospel 00:53:53.29\00:53:55.54 You are as clear as You can divinely and humanly be. 00:53:55.84\00:54:01.18 "It's done... salvation, the work 00:54:02.86\00:54:07.55 of My gift is accomplished. " 00:54:08.64\00:54:11.26 And so Father, I pray for all of our hearts. 00:54:13.86\00:54:15.95 There's this numinous sense that creeps up every now and then 00:54:16.15\00:54:19.77 "Maybe, maybe I'm not secure. 00:54:19.87\00:54:22.24 Maybe I haven't done enough.
