In the country of China, 00:04:47.71\00:04:49.51 the situation of the lepers has become a great tragedy. 00:04:49.54\00:04:55.53 There are 600 colonies and more then 250,000 lepers. 00:04:55.56\00:05:01.02 The first time I saw the lepers 00:05:24.07\00:05:26.37 and I looked upon their faces, 00:05:26.40\00:05:28.56 I felt a great pain inside my heart 00:05:28.59\00:05:32.34 but I felt called to serve them 00:05:32.37\00:05:34.22 because they are the sons and daughters of God. 00:05:34.25\00:05:37.05 These people were abandoned by society 00:05:55.19\00:05:58.13 and they feel that they don't belong. 00:05:58.16\00:06:00.59 Our goal is to help them feel special, 00:06:00.62\00:06:03.18 that they are loved, 00:06:03.21\00:06:04.88 but we also want them to know 00:06:04.91\00:06:06.30 that Jesus made the ultimate sacrifice for them, 00:06:06.33\00:06:09.81 that they are redeemed 00:06:09.84\00:06:11.19 and they have their kingdom for them. 00:06:11.22\00:06:13.15 I went to China in 2006 00:06:26.78\00:06:29.65 and saw the situation with the lepers 00:06:29.68\00:06:32.73 and found out that not one Adventist 00:06:32.76\00:06:35.37 was working to help them. 00:06:35.40\00:06:37.85 I wanted to do something to help. 00:06:37.88\00:06:40.00 We are involved, we've 18 projects, 00:07:06.60\00:07:10.06 and we have more than 70 volunteers. 00:07:10.09\00:07:12.42 We live among the people in the colony. 00:07:15.43\00:07:17.52 We eat with them. We serve them. 00:07:17.55\00:07:19.72 Jesus Christ served the people. 00:07:26.34\00:07:28.91 He provided for their needs, 00:07:28.94\00:07:31.38 that is what we are trying to do here. 00:07:31.41\00:07:33.99 We want to help these people, 00:07:34.02\00:07:35.56 and to provide for their needs, just like Jesus did. 00:07:35.59\00:07:39.48 So far, 327 lepers have been baptized. 00:07:41.35\00:07:45.59 My goal is to train these new converts 00:07:49.25\00:07:52.14 to serve and help other lepers. 00:07:52.17\00:07:54.93 The first time, we touch the wounds of the lepers, 00:08:23.03\00:08:26.22 it helps them to feel that someone cares about them. 00:08:26.25\00:08:29.43 Through this, we are showing the love of Jesus to them. 00:08:29.46\00:08:32.83 We are earning their trust. 00:08:32.86\00:08:34.87 Something is happening. 00:08:58.42\00:09:01.12 Something is happening in China in the leper colonies. 00:09:01.15\00:09:05.35 My name is Joy Cho and this is Grace Lee 00:09:05.38\00:09:07.98 and we are missionary volunteers in China. 00:09:08.01\00:09:10.91 God has given us a privilege 00:09:10.94\00:09:12.53 of serving in these lepers colonies. 00:09:12.56\00:09:15.90 There are 600 leper colonies in China with 240,000 lepers. 00:09:15.93\00:09:23.84 Although they have now taken the medication 00:09:23.87\00:09:26.56 that stops the spread of leprosy, 00:09:26.59\00:09:29.12 they still suffer the effects. 00:09:29.15\00:09:32.23 They need Jesus. 00:09:32.26\00:09:34.27 Who will share Jesus with them? 00:09:34.30\00:09:37.27 Our ministry has about 100 volunteers 00:09:37.30\00:09:40.56 and we are only in 10 out of the 600 leper colonies. 00:09:40.59\00:09:45.79 We need you. 00:09:45.82\00:09:47.78 Jesus wants to comeback very, very soon, 00:09:47.81\00:09:51.24 but He needs us to fulfill prophecy to become his remnant. 00:09:51.27\00:09:57.77 In order to become the remnant, 00:09:57.80\00:09:59.31 God has given us a way to prepare. 00:09:59.34\00:10:03.29 He's given us the work of Isaiah 58. 00:10:03.32\00:10:06.64 Guys, the work of Isaiah 58 00:10:06.67\00:10:08.87 is helping those who are in need, 00:10:08.90\00:10:11.58 living among them, working with them, 00:10:11.61\00:10:14.19 serving them just as Jesus did. 00:10:14.22\00:10:17.31 As we do the work of Isaiah 58, He qualifies us, 00:10:17.34\00:10:20.43 He cleanses us from all of our sins. 00:10:20.46\00:10:23.25 He gives us new characters to become just like Jesus. 00:10:23.28\00:10:27.80 It's been such a privilege, about six and a half months ago, 00:10:27.83\00:10:32.17 I went to China to checkout the leper colonies 00:10:32.20\00:10:34.76 because I wanted to comeback to the States 00:10:34.79\00:10:36.37 and recruit people for mission trips, 00:10:36.40\00:10:38.85 but with my one little carryon luggage and my backpack, 00:10:38.88\00:10:42.81 Jesus told me, you need to stay. 00:10:42.84\00:10:46.32 Give up your job as a teaching principal, 00:10:46.35\00:10:49.20 come and stay. 00:10:49.23\00:10:52.06 God has changed my life completely. 00:10:52.09\00:10:54.95 He's doing miraculous things. 00:10:54.98\00:10:56.73 The Holy Spirit is working mightily, 00:10:56.76\00:10:59.02 not just in the lives of the lepers who are open, 00:10:59.05\00:11:02.05 they are soaking up the gospel and the love that's shown. 00:11:02.08\00:11:07.45 There's one grandpa who's in his 80s. 00:11:07.48\00:11:10.34 He's blind, uneducated, 00:11:10.37\00:11:12.92 and yet he has memorized large portions of scripture. 00:11:12.95\00:11:17.46 Psalm Chapter 119, over 176 verses, 00:11:17.49\00:11:21.22 he can recite and that's just one. 00:11:21.25\00:11:25.34 One of our Chinese volunteers reads the Bible to him 00:11:25.37\00:11:29.02 and he memorizes it, he shares it, 00:11:29.05\00:11:31.67 he sees it as his work. 00:11:31.70\00:11:33.36 We have another leper grandpa and he says, 00:11:33.39\00:11:36.23 God has done two miracles in my life. 00:11:36.26\00:11:38.51 The first one is it to restore my sight, 00:11:38.54\00:11:41.37 so now I can read the Bible and Spirit of Prophecy 00:11:41.40\00:11:44.38 and the second is He healed, 00:11:44.41\00:11:46.20 I wounded my leg that I've had for a while 00:11:46.23\00:11:49.23 but I believe that God will do a third miracle in my life. 00:11:49.26\00:11:53.77 He believes that Jesus will heal his leg 00:11:53.80\00:11:56.93 so that he can walk again, for he is a cripple. 00:11:56.96\00:12:01.38 God is doing mighty things. 00:12:01.41\00:12:03.68 The work in China is the work of God's appointing 00:12:03.71\00:12:08.16 and what a privilege. 00:12:08.19\00:12:10.38 This is my friend Grace 00:12:10.41\00:12:11.53 and she's gonna share a little bit more with you. 00:12:11.56\00:12:14.79 You know, Sister White says 00:12:14.82\00:12:16.51 in Councils on Stewardship page 85, she says, 00:12:16.54\00:12:19.66 "The leprosy of selfishness has taken hold of the church." 00:12:19.69\00:12:23.97 And that's us, she says, "However, 00:12:24.00\00:12:26.69 The Lord Jesus Christ would heal the church 00:12:26.72\00:12:29.02 of this terrible disease if she would be healed." 00:12:29.05\00:12:32.39 The remedy is found in the 58th chapter of Isaiah. 00:12:32.42\00:12:36.55 We would like to invite you guys 00:12:36.58\00:12:38.31 to come and checkout the booth at the expo just across the way 00:12:38.34\00:12:44.52 and to find out more information. 00:12:44.55\00:12:46.40 But please come and learn more. 00:12:46.43\00:12:51.23 God is working in powerful ways 00:12:51.26\00:12:53.44 in China and also around the world. 00:12:53.47\00:12:56.21 Thank you. 00:12:56.24\00:12:57.78 Good evening, GYC. Good evening. 00:18:30.55\00:18:33.06 One of the most exciting things to me 00:18:33.09\00:18:34.89 about GYC is the amazing things 00:18:34.92\00:18:37.44 that attendees do throughout the year 00:18:37.47\00:18:39.72 and this evening we're gonna be featuring a project 00:18:39.75\00:18:41.70 by Bass Memorial Academy called Beyond Bass 00:18:41.73\00:18:45.75 and so I want to turn your attentions to the screen 00:18:45.78\00:18:47.93 as we show you a quick video. 00:18:47.96\00:18:49.52 I guess the big picture goal is to pass our books to-- 00:18:54.31\00:18:57.88 pass out 'The Great Controversy' 00:18:57.91\00:18:58.94 that is to everyone in the area surrounding Bass 00:18:58.97\00:19:02.47 which is Lumberton, Purvis, Pipersville and Hydesburg 00:19:02.50\00:19:07.22 There is a great need in our world 00:19:07.25\00:19:09.78 and as we went door to door, we saw that even more. 00:19:09.81\00:19:13.45 Now more then ever, 00:19:13.48\00:19:14.51 Satan has employed agencies and employed tactics 00:19:14.54\00:19:19.04 to lead people away from Christ. 00:19:19.07\00:19:20.84 It talks about the war 00:19:20.87\00:19:22.98 that's going on between God and Satan 00:19:23.01\00:19:25.18 and this time it's we're like living in the last days 00:19:25.21\00:19:28.74 and so people need to know and understand 00:19:28.77\00:19:31.57 what really happened and what's really going on. 00:19:31.60\00:19:34.78 If you want to pass "The Great Controversy" 00:19:34.81\00:19:38.31 in your town, my best suggestion for you 00:19:38.34\00:19:41.14 is to just ask for donations, 00:19:41.17\00:19:43.77 find the money, raise the money, 00:19:43.80\00:19:45.65 get the books and just go out there. 00:19:45.68\00:19:48.53 Beyond Bass started when we were in class 00:19:52.09\00:19:55.32 and the teacher started explaining 00:19:55.35\00:19:57.27 that she couldn't sleep that night. 00:19:57.30\00:19:59.08 She told us that she was gonna teach everything 00:19:59.11\00:20:01.67 that we were gonna supposed to do second semester. 00:20:01.70\00:20:03.64 She told us the plan was to give 00:20:03.67\00:20:06.15 The Great Controversy out to everyone in Lumberton. 00:20:06.18\00:20:09.77 This is what God brought to my mind 00:20:09.80\00:20:12.20 and I started writing the numbers 00:20:12.23\00:20:13.64 on the board of how many homes 00:20:13.67\00:20:15.49 there were in the surrounding towns 00:20:15.52\00:20:17.49 and basically saying what if we, 00:20:17.52\00:20:19.41 as a this small class get to this area first 00:20:19.44\00:20:22.56 and in the next year the next one and we continue on. 00:20:22.59\00:20:25.33 Well, I was in my office one day 00:20:25.36\00:20:26.76 and my Bible teacher comes in and says, 00:20:26.79\00:20:29.43 I have an idea and it's a little out of the box, 00:20:29.46\00:20:32.58 but I want to see what you think of it. 00:20:32.61\00:20:35.09 When I first heart of that, 00:20:35.12\00:20:36.67 I really didn't know what to expect. 00:20:36.70\00:20:38.62 Miss Chelsy was explaining it out, 00:20:38.65\00:20:40.18 like oh you know, this could be fun, 00:20:40.21\00:20:42.39 it could be interesting, 00:20:42.42\00:20:43.98 but then, you know, I was also kind of nervous 00:20:44.01\00:20:45.99 like I don't know how I feel about going door to door. 00:20:46.02\00:20:48.68 Door to door I was like no. 00:20:48.71\00:20:51.13 I don't do that. 00:20:51.16\00:20:52.54 At first I thought it was impossible, 00:20:52.57\00:20:54.39 first to do it 'cause we had a really small class 00:20:54.42\00:20:56.32 and it was just like, all 14 of us. 00:20:56.35\00:20:59.32 So went through with the training in the class, 00:20:59.35\00:21:01.62 I gave them a canvas and I said, 00:21:01.65\00:21:03.54 okay, you guys need to do this. 00:21:03.57\00:21:05.56 We just started reading with the person 00:21:05.59\00:21:07.42 and just practicing back and forth 00:21:07.45\00:21:10.27 and kind of memorized it, 00:21:10.30\00:21:11.38 which actually took it quick on that. 00:21:11.41\00:21:13.08 They started calling people. 00:21:13.11\00:21:14.50 They raised all the money for the books. 00:21:14.53\00:21:17.72 They started making maps, 00:21:17.75\00:21:19.05 here's the areas we're gonna cover. 00:21:19.08\00:21:20.93 They just took ownership of it. 00:21:20.96\00:21:22.72 The money really wasn't the hard part. 00:21:22.75\00:21:25.84 We probably knocked that out in about a week or two. 00:21:25.87\00:21:28.83 We had all the money that we needed for the books. 00:21:28.86\00:21:31.99 The hard part was getting out there. 00:21:32.02\00:21:34.60 The other part of the project was to read the book. 00:21:37.96\00:21:40.57 And I was-at first, I thought it's you know, 00:21:40.60\00:21:42.48 it's gonna be really, really long 00:21:42.51\00:21:43.81 and but actually it went by pretty fast 00:21:43.84\00:21:45.33 and you know, you learn a lot of new things. 00:21:45.36\00:21:47.33 I hadn't really read the Great Controversy. 00:21:47.36\00:21:49.46 I mean, I read bits and parts of it 00:21:49.49\00:21:51.20 but now I'm going through the whole book, 00:21:51.23\00:21:52.90 chapter by chapter. 00:21:52.93\00:21:53.96 I thought it really was awesome, I loved it. 00:21:53.99\00:21:56.01 I mean, the beginning was history and I like history. 00:21:56.04\00:21:58.19 We had to pick a chapter 00:21:58.22\00:21:59.39 and present it for a class period, 00:21:59.42\00:22:01.61 about 40 minute class period and then assign homework, 00:22:01.64\00:22:03.84 that was one way where we had to make 00:22:03.87\00:22:06.78 The Great Controversy kind of ours. 00:22:06.81\00:22:08.67 It made it a whole lot easier to just to give the book 00:22:08.70\00:22:11.41 because when people ask you, 00:22:11.44\00:22:12.55 you know, what's the book about? 00:22:12.58\00:22:13.91 You know, I say, 00:22:13.94\00:22:15.20 you know, it was a lot easier to explain to them 00:22:15.23\00:22:17.61 and tell them what it was. 00:22:17.64\00:22:18.98 Because we didn't knew The Great Controversy 00:22:19.01\00:22:21.35 and still having the same end to it, 00:22:21.38\00:22:23.14 it had in the beginning like I don't want to share this with. 00:22:23.17\00:22:26.23 I couldn't have the attitude because I know it's in here 00:22:26.26\00:22:29.19 and I know that everyone needs to read it. 00:22:29.22\00:22:31.66 Once you've read it then it's like 00:22:31.69\00:22:34.39 you won't want to not give it out. 00:22:34.42\00:22:37.88 Going door to door, passing out The Great Controversy was-- 00:22:37.91\00:22:41.77 it basically like being a part 00:22:41.80\00:22:43.82 of The Great Controversy kind of. 00:22:43.85\00:22:45.23 It was like becoming a part of the book almost. 00:22:45.26\00:22:49.41 So just last year, 14 students, 00:22:49.44\00:22:52.30 a small little class, 00:22:52.33\00:22:54.06 each student gave out about 50 books in the community. 00:22:54.09\00:22:57.92 They covered an entire town near us 00:22:57.95\00:23:00.43 and now this year, this year's class 00:23:00.46\00:23:02.24 is going to cover the next town. 00:23:02.27\00:23:04.46 Imagine if every person at GYC 00:23:04.49\00:23:07.20 went home and said I'm gonna give out 50 books, 00:23:07.23\00:23:09.76 that's only in half of the year, the whole year, a 100 books. 00:23:09.79\00:23:13.11 Imagine what that would accomplish. 00:23:13.14\00:23:17.58 Hi, my name is Phil Wilhelm, 00:23:17.61\00:23:19.10 I'm the Principal of Bass Memorial Academy. 00:23:19.13\00:23:21.46 And I cannot tell you how excited I was 00:23:21.49\00:23:23.65 when my Bible teacher brought this idea to me 00:23:23.68\00:23:26.40 and I want to encourage each one here 00:23:26.43\00:23:28.59 that might have a similar idea 00:23:28.62\00:23:30.53 that is waiting on somebody else. 00:23:30.56\00:23:32.19 The leadership is anxious to have people bring ideas. 00:23:32.22\00:23:35.53 They are 100% behind it 00:23:35.56\00:23:37.95 if somebody will just do the work. 00:23:37.98\00:23:41.08 The money is there and I just want to encourage 00:23:41.11\00:23:43.40 each of you in that respect. 00:23:43.43\00:23:45.58 I've Amber and Rayford here with me tonight 00:23:45.61\00:23:48.10 and they would like to share it 00:23:48.13\00:23:49.59 from their perspective about this project. 00:23:49.62\00:23:52.99 Okay, how many of you have ever handed out 00:23:53.02\00:23:56.41 or sold A Great Controversy? 00:23:56.44\00:23:59.53 Okay. 00:23:59.56\00:24:00.59 Well, I have canvassed for three summers. 00:24:00.62\00:24:03.58 I was able to sell and give out A Great Controversy 00:24:03.61\00:24:08.43 and for me it was good 00:24:08.46\00:24:11.26 but I never got into actually read the book myself. 00:24:11.29\00:24:15.04 And so Beyond Bass actually gave me 00:24:15.07\00:24:17.53 the opportunity to be able to read it. 00:24:17.56\00:24:20.45 Several times, I was enjoying the book 00:24:25.19\00:24:28.52 with friends and family. 00:24:28.55\00:24:31.85 I was able to actually get into the book. 00:24:31.88\00:24:35.50 I was able to see God in a whole different light. 00:24:35.53\00:24:39.22 A lot of people see God as some harsh person 00:24:39.25\00:24:42.61 but I was actually able to see God's love. 00:24:42.64\00:24:45.86 And so-- one thing I want to challenge you 00:24:45.89\00:24:50.49 about is to go home, to read it yourself 00:24:50.52\00:24:53.07 and to actually make it a part of your life. 00:24:53.10\00:24:56.98 Now, how many you have actually read 00:24:57.01\00:24:59.94 The Great Controversy? 00:24:59.97\00:25:02.17 Hey, good. A lot of you, that's great. 00:25:02.20\00:25:04.29 I had read it before actually as a challenge at another GYC. 00:25:04.32\00:25:08.67 David Asscherick in one of his last seminars of-- 00:25:08.70\00:25:12.90 the session that he had challenged everyone to go out 00:25:12.93\00:25:15.96 and read the whole entire conflict of the ages series. 00:25:15.99\00:25:18.88 I believe this was in Houston if I'm not mistaken. 00:25:18.91\00:25:21.61 And I took that to heart and I made sure I read the book. 00:25:21.64\00:25:26.79 Didn't do much with it though, it was a lot of good knowledge. 00:25:26.82\00:25:29.70 A lot of knowledge that helped my own personal life 00:25:29.73\00:25:31.71 but I didn't share it until this project started and from there, 00:25:31.74\00:25:37.25 it was truly for me it was amazing 00:25:37.28\00:25:40.05 because it was a step into the book, 00:25:40.08\00:25:44.67 into the story, into reality, making myself 00:25:44.70\00:25:49.10 not only just a person who saw the whole entire picture 00:25:49.13\00:25:53.73 that God wanted us to see 00:25:53.76\00:25:54.79 but made myself a part of the whole entire reality 00:25:54.82\00:25:58.97 that's playing out around us and fought on God's side 00:25:59.00\00:26:01.86 and passing out the book giving other people 00:26:01.89\00:26:04.90 the opportunity to learn of the truth 00:26:04.93\00:26:07.05 and make their own choice 00:26:07.08\00:26:08.56 and become a part of The Great Controversy also. 00:26:08.59\00:26:11.27 So I challenge you guys to-- in your own churches, 00:26:11.30\00:26:15.79 in your own schools, pass out 00:26:15.82\00:26:20.24 The Great Controversy, people need it. 00:26:20.27\00:26:23.47 So Beyond Bass, I'm so excited about it. 00:26:23.50\00:26:25.84 I'm gonna use the last of my voice to appeal to you. 00:26:25.87\00:26:29.58 This project has been so inspiring, 00:26:29.61\00:26:31.76 reading the book, passing it out to people, 00:26:31.79\00:26:35.48 giving The Great Controversy out, 00:26:35.51\00:26:36.79 it's not a new concept but reading it 00:26:36.82\00:26:40.26 and going to the doors as students will say, 00:26:40.29\00:26:41.83 hi, I'm reading this book and it's blessing me, 00:26:41.86\00:26:44.69 so we've raised the money to give you one for free. 00:26:44.72\00:26:47.33 We didn't have people who were turning us away, 00:26:47.36\00:26:49.53 they were excited to see that. 00:26:49.56\00:26:51.50 I want to encourage you to go home, 00:26:51.53\00:26:54.10 to read The Great Controversy 00:26:54.13\00:26:56.02 and then to go beyond your school, 00:26:56.05\00:26:57.76 beyond your church, beyond your home 00:26:57.79\00:27:00.32 as we're working to go Beyond Bass. 00:27:00.35\00:27:02.42 What if, imagine-- what if all of us at GYC, 00:27:02.45\00:27:06.23 we go beyond what we're comfortable with 00:27:06.26\00:27:09.39 and we go beyond and we cover our area. 00:27:09.42\00:27:11.46 Look how we showed that map, 00:27:11.49\00:27:12.85 look how quickly that area could be covered 00:27:12.88\00:27:15.06 if we're willing to go beyond our area to share this message. 00:27:15.09\00:27:19.45 How many of you would be willing 00:27:19.48\00:27:22.07 to go home to read it if you haven't 00:27:22.10\00:27:24.61 and to share this book with others. 00:27:24.64\00:27:25.78 Raise your hand. 00:27:25.81\00:27:27.48 God wants to use us to share this message. 00:27:27.51\00:27:30.52 If you want to join in the project 00:27:30.55\00:27:32.90 or learn more about it, come see us, 00:27:32.93\00:27:34.63 we're in row 200, we've a booth there. 00:27:34.66\00:27:37.12 If you can't find us, look for it, 00:27:37.15\00:27:38.18 it is written and then come find us to the left. 00:27:38.21\00:27:40.61 Come see us, we'll love for you to be part of this project 00:27:40.64\00:27:44.53 to go beyond to share God's word. 00:27:44.56\00:27:46.85 With me this evening, I have a new friend Elder Knott 00:27:51.97\00:27:56.83 and he's part of one of the most historic parts 00:27:56.86\00:27:59.91 of the Adventist Church. 00:27:59.94\00:28:01.14 Can you tell us a little bit about that? 00:28:01.17\00:28:03.11 Well, you're not sure you want to be telling 00:28:03.14\00:28:04.93 teens and young adults that you're really old 00:28:04.96\00:28:07.75 but at 165 years old, the Adventist Review 00:28:07.78\00:28:11.60 is still the newest thing in the church 00:28:11.63\00:28:14.03 because if you go to your website, 00:28:14.06\00:28:16.28 you will see this week's edition of the Adventist Review, 00:28:16.31\00:28:18.93 all unlocked there with the freshest news, 00:28:18.96\00:28:21.41 the newest content. 00:28:21.44\00:28:22.47 So it's very old but very new. 00:28:22.50\00:28:26.63 Now the Adventist Review is particularly interesting to me 00:28:26.66\00:28:29.60 because I've been involved in the publishing work 00:28:29.63\00:28:31.34 for the last few years. 00:28:31.37\00:28:32.92 My grandma has read your magazine multiple times, 00:28:32.95\00:28:34.88 my mom reads it as well. 00:28:34.91\00:28:36.53 But what do you think is the largest impact 00:28:36.56\00:28:38.57 or what excites you the most about the Review? 00:28:38.60\00:28:42.14 The Review is designed to gather the scattered flock. 00:28:42.17\00:28:46.59 That was James White's original term. 00:28:46.62\00:28:48.90 He saw this magazine designed to connect 00:28:48.93\00:28:51.48 Adventists all around the globe. 00:28:51.51\00:28:53.45 You may remember Ellen White's great vision of the 1848 00:28:53.48\00:28:56.51 before the magazine was published. 00:28:56.54\00:28:58.14 She said, she saw it going like streams of light 00:28:58.17\00:29:01.20 clear around the world. 00:29:01.23\00:29:02.57 Well, today, Adventist Review 00:29:02.60\00:29:03.90 and Adventist world reach 165 countries, 00:29:03.93\00:29:08.00 about eight million Adventists every month read the magazine 00:29:08.03\00:29:11.87 or within the reach of the magazine. 00:29:11.90\00:29:13.86 We get to see and hear those stories of it 00:29:13.89\00:29:16.03 connecting Adventists to each other 00:29:16.06\00:29:18.29 and to the central truths of Adventism, 00:29:18.32\00:29:20.49 that's what makes it fun to go to work everyday. 00:29:20.52\00:29:22.67 Now you're telling me that happens on a weekly basis. 00:29:22.70\00:29:25.31 Adventist Review is published every week, 00:29:25.34\00:29:27.99 it's been doing that for all those years, 165. 00:29:28.02\00:29:31.02 Adventist World is published once a month 00:29:31.05\00:29:33.64 and that literally goes around the globe 00:29:33.67\00:29:36.06 fulfilling that vision of Ellen White's 00:29:36.09\00:29:37.80 and carrying news and inspiration 00:29:37.83\00:29:40.15 to millions of Adventists. 00:29:40.18\00:29:41.51 I've never had a chance to meet 00:29:41.54\00:29:42.98 but on one day I'm going to meet in the kingdom 00:29:43.01\00:29:44.57 and there's gonna be more of them there 00:29:44.60\00:29:46.58 because of the ministry, these magazines. 00:29:46.61\00:29:48.20 So outside of informing Adventist 00:29:48.23\00:29:49.77 on what's going on in the church, 00:29:49.80\00:29:51.44 what are the other impacts that the Review is having? 00:29:51.47\00:29:54.56 You know, we particularly appreciate 00:29:54.59\00:29:56.68 the opportunity to reach out and draw young authors 00:29:56.71\00:30:00.28 into the ministry of these two magazines, 00:30:00.31\00:30:02.31 specifically, Adventist Review. 00:30:02.34\00:30:04.54 Everywhere I go, I meet people who say, 00:30:04.57\00:30:06.51 you know, Bill, I think the Lord's been giving me 00:30:06.54\00:30:08.58 some talent to write, I've certainly got some ideas 00:30:08.61\00:30:10.97 I'm passionate about. 00:30:11.00\00:30:12.26 One of the jobs I have is to go out 00:30:12.29\00:30:14.10 and find those teens and young adults 00:30:14.13\00:30:16.80 at every convention I go to and say, 00:30:16.83\00:30:18.60 if you want to write, come find me. 00:30:18.63\00:30:20.68 I'm hearing the hauls, I'll give you my business card 00:30:20.71\00:30:23.17 and the email address works, you'll reach me directly. 00:30:23.20\00:30:26.02 An opportunity to learn about 00:30:26.05\00:30:27.63 what God is doing impressing your heart, 00:30:27.66\00:30:29.94 to write for the magazine, to write for publication. 00:30:29.97\00:30:32.74 God never wastes the ideas he gives His people. 00:30:32.77\00:30:36.05 And if He's given you something you're passionate about, 00:30:36.08\00:30:38.31 we'd love to be the ones 00:30:38.34\00:30:39.67 who help you get that into print. 00:30:39.70\00:30:42.00 You will notice as you look through our magazine 00:30:42.03\00:30:43.79 sitting on your chairs tonight, 00:30:43.82\00:30:45.08 that we feature some of the biggest 00:30:45.11\00:30:46.77 and best names in Adventism. 00:30:46.80\00:30:48.56 Our cover story by Shawn Boonstra. 00:30:48.59\00:30:50.61 Editorial by Mark Finley who's on my staff I might add. 00:30:50.64\00:30:54.46 We feature columnists like Cliff Goldstein 00:30:54.49\00:30:57.11 and Andy McChesney and Jill Morikone. 00:30:57.14\00:31:00.12 We do that because these are authors 00:31:00.15\00:31:02.18 who found fresh original ways to communicate truth. 00:31:02.21\00:31:05.37 Our readers tell us, 00:31:05.40\00:31:06.48 this is helping us in our spiritual life. 00:31:06.51\00:31:08.85 So, Elder Knott, you're saying, 00:31:08.88\00:31:09.91 if we'd have Bachelors in Journalism or Communication 00:31:09.94\00:31:13.19 then we can write and submit to the Review, is that correct? Michel? 00:33:34.64\00:33:37.43 When the executive committee decided on Before Men and Angels 00:33:37.46\00:33:40.29 as the theme for this year's conference, 00:33:40.32\00:33:41.83 we thought it would be so great if we passed out 00:33:41.86\00:33:45.04 The Great Controversy at a conference 00:33:45.07\00:33:47.17 that's all about The Great Controversy. 00:33:47.20\00:33:49.51 So we teamed up with Pacific press to come up 00:33:49.54\00:33:51.46 with a good looking, attractive, unabridged Great Controversy 00:33:51.49\00:33:55.31 that we could hand out at this year's conference 00:33:55.34\00:33:56.91 and many of you have stopped by our booth, 00:33:56.94\00:33:58.90 have already seen our new design of this controversy. 00:33:58.93\00:34:02.82 But what's interesting and what's a little funny 00:34:02.85\00:34:05.28 is that even before I or any members 00:34:05.31\00:34:08.13 of the executive committee could get our hands 00:34:08.16\00:34:10.22 on this new edition of the GC, 00:34:10.25\00:34:12.84 our press contact had already given away 00:34:12.87\00:34:16.20 a copy to his neighbor. 00:34:16.23\00:34:17.84 So the very first copy of this GC 00:34:17.87\00:34:19.68 that many of you've held in your hands 00:34:19.71\00:34:21.67 was not given away to a member of our church 00:34:21.70\00:34:25.81 but it was actually given away to our press contact's neighbor 00:34:25.84\00:34:30.52 who is not Adventist. 00:34:30.55\00:34:31.58 So from the very beginning, 00:34:31.61\00:34:32.71 this was created as a sharing resource. 00:34:32.74\00:34:35.74 Amen. 00:34:35.77\00:34:37.30 I've a confession to make. 00:34:37.33\00:34:39.33 I've never actually been on Outreach at GYC. 00:34:39.36\00:34:44.72 I've always gotten my students on to the buses 00:34:44.75\00:34:47.32 and then there was nothing left for me 00:34:47.35\00:34:48.69 or I've been working for GYC. 00:34:48.72\00:34:50.37 But guess what's going to happen tomorrow? 00:34:50.40\00:34:53.32 I'm going on Outreach and I hope you're going, too. 00:34:53.35\00:34:58.00 We're gonna show you the video one more time 00:34:58.03\00:34:59.86 to help you prepare for Outreach tomorrow. 00:34:59.89\00:35:02.42 Just tomorrow, you can pick them up 00:36:46.29\00:36:47.57 at breakfast if you have a meal plan 00:36:47.60\00:36:49.45 and meet us here in this auditorium. 00:36:49.48\00:36:51.81 But if you noticed in the video, 00:36:51.84\00:36:54.16 there's not only the possibility of you going door to door. 00:36:54.19\00:36:57.82 Eric, can you tell us a little bit about 00:36:57.85\00:36:59.50 what else may happen for our attendees? 00:36:59.53\00:37:01.19 All right, well, so Outreach has nine different ministries 00:37:01.22\00:37:05.36 or ways that we reach the community 00:37:05.39\00:37:06.81 and you will be able to participate 00:37:06.84\00:37:08.05 in several of them. 00:37:08.08\00:37:09.57 Just some examples, one of them is Hospital Ministry. 00:37:09.60\00:37:12.69 Hospital Ministry, what we do is we actually go room to room, 00:37:12.72\00:37:15.97 we sing a song or two for the patient. 00:37:16.00\00:37:19.14 We... pray with them and then we-- 00:37:19.17\00:37:23.47 if the opportunity arises, 00:37:23.50\00:37:24.79 we stay back to create a relationship with them. 00:37:24.82\00:37:27.72 We're also going to a section 8 complex, 00:37:27.75\00:37:29.91 we've been there for a year now 00:37:29.94\00:37:32.81 and we're gonna be using this as a way 00:37:32.84\00:37:34.70 to thank them for letting us be there for that year. 00:37:34.73\00:37:39.75 We're gonna be in the nursing home 00:37:39.78\00:37:41.02 creating relationships with them. 00:37:41.05\00:37:42.18 They hardly get any visitors at all, so be there. 00:37:42.21\00:37:45.44 So would you like to know 00:37:45.47\00:37:46.50 how to go on one of the service buses? 00:37:46.53\00:37:49.56 It's completely random. 00:37:49.59\00:37:53.07 As you load the buses, 00:37:53.10\00:37:55.09 you may or may not be on one of the service buses. 00:37:55.12\00:37:57.86 It's about a one in six chance. 00:37:57.89\00:38:00.06 Tell us a little bit about the follow up 00:38:00.09\00:38:02.16 this all has been planned here in Orlando. 00:38:02.19\00:38:03.95 I'd be glad to. 00:38:03.98\00:38:05.28 So now it doesn't matter 00:38:05.31\00:38:06.58 what bus you get into because we need help 00:38:06.61\00:38:09.58 for the initial follow up 00:38:09.61\00:38:11.03 but also for the long term follow up. 00:38:11.06\00:38:13.65 So first about the initial follow up. 00:38:13.68\00:38:16.11 On your buses, there will be a sign up sheet. 00:38:16.14\00:38:19.46 We need at least five people per bus 00:38:19.49\00:38:23.55 but not limited to five people, 00:38:23.58\00:38:25.29 so we want everyone to help up 00:38:25.32\00:38:26.83 because what we need to do 00:38:26.86\00:38:28.20 is to call everyone of those contacts that we've established 00:38:28.23\00:38:32.18 so that they know that we are reaching out to them. 00:38:32.21\00:38:34.59 We want to make sure we break a ground with them 00:38:34.62\00:38:37.52 and tell them that there will be more things 00:38:37.55\00:38:40.81 coming up to follow up with them 00:38:40.84\00:38:43.04 and that leads me to the second thing. 00:38:43.07\00:38:45.45 There is a long term follow up 00:38:45.48\00:38:47.02 that we need to do for Central Florida. 00:38:47.05\00:38:49.95 How many of you live here in Orlando... 00:38:49.98\00:38:53.17 in the Central Florida region? 00:38:53.20\00:38:54.53 I know there's more of you out there, come on. 00:38:54.56\00:38:57.28 This is my first year at GYC 00:38:57.31\00:38:59.38 and I was excited to get out here. 00:38:59.41\00:39:01.63 I'm excited to participate in Outreach and Evangelism. 00:39:01.66\00:39:05.30 So I know there's more of us out there, 00:39:05.33\00:39:07.42 but anyway, the long term follow up-- 00:39:07.45\00:39:11.00 what we're gonna do is actually create a workshop 00:39:11.03\00:39:13.70 to train people as community missionaries. 00:39:13.73\00:39:17.43 This way, you can keep in contact 00:39:17.46\00:39:19.13 with those that you've met, 00:39:19.16\00:39:20.69 that you knocked on doors with and hopefully 00:39:20.72\00:39:22.65 minister to them for the long term. 00:39:22.68\00:39:25.26 Isn't that exciting? Amen. 00:39:25.29\00:39:27.07 Oh, come on, this is what it's about. 00:39:27.10\00:39:29.52 Establishing long term relationships with people 00:39:29.55\00:39:32.60 so that when you get to the kingdom, 00:39:32.63\00:39:34.68 you can see him and say, hey, I knocked on your door. 00:39:34.71\00:39:38.97 I gave you that Great Controversy 00:39:39.00\00:39:41.78 and we can all say, praise the Lord. 00:39:41.81\00:39:44.31 So remember that. 00:39:44.34\00:39:45.37 I just took quickly to announce that. 00:39:45.40\00:39:47.28 The workshop is actually next weekend, 00:39:47.31\00:39:49.47 January 11, at Kress Memorial Church. 00:39:49.50\00:39:52.94 And we'll have more information at the Irish side booths 00:39:52.97\00:39:55.79 and also the Salt booths. 00:39:55.82\00:39:57.02 So if you have any questions, go to those booths 00:39:57.05\00:39:59.10 and we'll give you more information. 00:39:59.13\00:40:00.61 And you know, there's not time but there is even more. 00:40:00.64\00:40:02.55 They are planning an evangelistic series. 00:40:02.58\00:40:04.34 There's a lot going on to follow up 00:40:04.37\00:40:06.48 where you're going to be doing tomorrow. 00:40:06.51\00:40:08.51 Tell us what it's like at a door? 00:40:08.54\00:40:11.50 Yes, for those of you 00:40:11.53\00:40:12.56 who have gone door to door before, 00:40:12.59\00:40:14.06 you know that personal labor 00:40:14.09\00:40:15.95 is one of the most awesome experiences. 00:40:15.98\00:40:18.43 You are going one on one to these people 00:40:18.46\00:40:21.17 and meeting them right where they are at. 00:40:21.20\00:40:22.42 You're meeting people who probably wouldn't walk 00:40:22.45\00:40:24.99 into the evangelistic series on their own or into church, 00:40:25.02\00:40:28.23 but there are people out there that are open 00:40:28.26\00:40:29.77 but may be they just haven't gone to church or whatever. 00:40:29.80\00:40:32.26 But when they see you, 00:40:32.29\00:40:33.49 a young person that's smiling and happy, 00:40:33.52\00:40:36.15 it gives them a different idea of Christianity 00:40:36.18\00:40:38.96 and they are actually a lot more open about it. 00:40:38.99\00:40:41.61 And so we're gonna go tomorrow. 00:40:41.64\00:40:43.24 We're gonna be loading 55 buses to go into Orlando, 00:40:43.27\00:40:46.28 door to door and we're-could be passing out globe. 00:40:46.31\00:40:49.27 This is what David Asscherick wrote 00:40:49.30\00:40:51.32 about his personal experience with The Great Controversy, 00:40:51.35\00:40:54.25 but we're gonna be doing something different as well. 00:40:54.28\00:40:56.49 We're gonna be leaving The Great Controversy 00:40:56.52\00:40:58.22 on a donation basis. 00:40:58.25\00:41:00.55 So we'll be training you guys tomorrow on what to do. 00:41:00.58\00:41:04.09 We actually have these training cards. 00:41:04.12\00:41:05.78 So as you can see, they are small. 00:41:05.81\00:41:07.42 It's not rocket science. It's very simple. 00:41:07.45\00:41:09.73 It will be an easy training tomorrow. 00:41:09.76\00:41:12.12 You can actually pick these up at the glow booth tonight. 00:41:12.15\00:41:15.87 So you can actually start 00:41:15.90\00:41:17.14 training and memorizing the canvas. 00:41:17.17\00:41:19.28 I just want to encourage you guys to come 00:41:19.31\00:41:20.90 because there are people out there 00:41:20.93\00:41:22.05 that you're gonna reach that will probably 00:41:22.08\00:41:23.59 not be reached if we didn't go out. 00:41:23.62\00:41:25.72 Now I don't want you to be intimidated 00:41:25.75\00:41:27.79 by raising money for two reasons. 00:41:27.82\00:41:29.42 One, if we don't raise money 00:41:29.45\00:41:31.56 SALT is not going to be able to follow up on the contacts. 00:41:31.59\00:41:35.25 So we need to raise money. 00:41:35.28\00:41:36.77 But more importantly, there's someone out there 00:41:36.80\00:41:39.29 that needs to be touched. 00:41:39.32\00:41:40.61 There's someone out there that needs to be touched. 00:41:40.64\00:41:42.10 Can you tell us your experience? 00:41:42.13\00:41:44.80 One hot summer in Holt, Michigan. 00:41:44.83\00:41:47.39 I was big booking and big booking 00:41:47.42\00:41:50.42 is where you sell The Conflict of the Ages series, 00:41:50.45\00:41:53.05 the big blue books. 00:41:53.08\00:41:54.68 And I knocked on one door on three different occasions. 00:41:54.71\00:41:58.64 The first time I knocked, 00:41:58.67\00:41:59.78 a young gentleman answered the door 00:41:59.81\00:42:02.17 and unexcitedly brushed me off to his mother. 00:42:02.20\00:42:05.17 I went in and she greeted me, fed me, what a blessing. 00:42:05.20\00:42:09.89 I showed her the books and she was so interested, 00:42:09.92\00:42:13.30 she said, can you get these to me in Spanish? 00:42:13.33\00:42:16.28 I said sure. I'll comeback. 00:42:16.31\00:42:18.73 I came back the second time, 00:42:18.76\00:42:20.69 but unfortunately the books in Spanish hadn't arrived. 00:42:20.72\00:42:23.79 So I still went, I talked to her, 00:42:23.82\00:42:25.95 made good friends with her and also spoke 00:42:25.98\00:42:28.11 some more with her son who was planning 00:42:28.14\00:42:29.82 to move to California to be an actor. 00:42:29.85\00:42:33.28 I left and on the third occasion, 00:42:33.31\00:42:35.17 I finally came back, I came and I had the Spanish books, 00:42:35.20\00:42:39.83 but his mother was not home, he was home. 00:42:39.86\00:42:43.02 So I started talking to this young gentleman. 00:42:43.05\00:42:45.22 He invited me in and I showed him the books that I had. 00:42:45.25\00:42:48.43 And do you what book he was interested in? 00:42:48.46\00:42:51.29 The Great Controversy and also Steps to Christ. 00:42:51.32\00:42:54.49 He was so interested and he's like wow. 00:42:54.52\00:42:56.99 I started telling him about the book and he asked me, 00:42:57.02\00:43:00.27 where can I learn more about this? 00:43:00.30\00:43:01.97 I said, well, hey, are you interested in Bible studies? 00:43:02.00\00:43:04.41 He said, yes, of course. 00:43:04.44\00:43:05.69 Is it free? And how old are you? 00:46:27.91\00:46:29.66 I'm 15. You're 15, okay. 00:46:29.69\00:46:32.34 Why did you go to that event? 00:46:32.37\00:46:34.59 Well, I was gonna go to a horse camp 00:46:34.62\00:46:37.06 but I was like, you know, that would be putting horses 00:46:37.09\00:46:40.58 and what I want, before God, 00:46:40.61\00:46:42.51 so I decided to go to CYC. 00:46:42.54\00:46:44.47 Awesome. And what were they doing at CYC? 00:46:44.50\00:46:47.20 In the mornings, we had like meetings on fundamental beliefs 00:46:47.23\00:46:51.64 and we took notes on like how to give Bible studies. 00:46:51.67\00:46:55.62 And then in the afternoons, 00:46:55.65\00:46:57.09 we had a meeting on Evangelism 00:46:57.12\00:46:59.45 and how we could preach to others. 00:46:59.48\00:47:01.29 And then in the evenings, we would buddy up 00:47:01.32\00:47:03.45 and we would go door knocking 00:47:03.48\00:47:06.48 and pass out literature and-- 00:47:06.51\00:47:09.55 Awesome. 00:47:09.58\00:47:10.61 Now, I'm not gonna ask you about experiences 00:47:10.64\00:47:12.05 you had during that week of cross training 00:47:12.08\00:47:15.41 but what happened after when you came back home, 00:47:15.44\00:47:17.58 what did you do with the material 00:47:17.61\00:47:18.73 that you had gathered from that experience? 00:47:18.76\00:47:20.02 Well, I've been doing Bible studies with my neighbor. 00:47:20.05\00:47:23.94 Is your neighbor 15 as well? 00:47:23.97\00:47:25.69 No. 00:47:25.72\00:47:28.18 He's older. Okay, okay. 00:47:28.21\00:47:30.83 Yeah, I already gave him Bible studies 00:47:30.86\00:47:33.67 and he was really excited that I was going. 00:47:33.70\00:47:35.59 He's like, you will have more stuff to share with me 00:47:35.62\00:47:38.47 and I was like yeah, this is gonna be great. 00:47:38.50\00:47:40.54 So I went back and I gave him the Bible studies 00:47:40.57\00:47:43.57 and he's like amazed. 00:47:43.60\00:47:44.70 He's like how did you learn this much in one week? 00:47:44.73\00:47:47.74 He's like I don't understand how this is possible. 00:47:47.77\00:47:49.82 I was like well, you know, 00:47:49.85\00:47:51.78 with God's help, we got it all down 00:47:51.81\00:47:53.89 and I'm here to share it with you. 00:47:53.92\00:47:56.87 And how-- did he make any decisions? 00:47:56.90\00:47:59.67 He's in to valley? 00:47:59.70\00:48:00.85 Like, well, he's headed towards baptized. 00:48:00.88\00:48:03.52 Amen. 00:48:03.55\00:48:04.61 So we should pray for him? 00:48:04.64\00:48:05.72 Yes, please pray for him. 00:48:05.75\00:48:07.15 Okay, awesome. 00:48:07.18\00:48:08.53 We're gonna move right on just 00:48:08.56\00:48:10.15 'cause they give us such a short time. 00:48:10.18\00:48:12.29 Patrick? Yes. 00:48:12.32\00:48:13.53 You are here representing which affiliate? 00:48:13.56\00:48:17.50 I'm here representing GYC West. 00:48:17.53\00:48:19.25 GYC West on the west coast. 00:48:19.28\00:48:20.83 On the west coast. 00:48:20.86\00:48:21.89 And this is not a mission that happened 00:48:21.92\00:48:23.95 but something that is going to happen. 00:48:23.98\00:48:26.01 What is it? Where is it gonna be? 00:48:26.04\00:48:27.67 Why is it? 00:48:27.70\00:48:29.35 At the end of August, 00:48:29.38\00:48:31.12 we're gonna have a mission trip to Lakeport, California. 00:48:31.15\00:48:34.39 And the focus of the mission trip 00:48:34.42\00:48:36.11 is going to be reaching out 00:48:36.14\00:48:37.25 to the Native American community. 00:48:37.28\00:48:39.63 And the burden that we have is to fulfill 00:48:39.66\00:48:42.93 that principle in scripture that says, 00:48:42.96\00:48:45.48 those who are strong should bear the burdens of the weak. 00:48:45.51\00:48:48.60 And the Native American community has a history 00:48:48.63\00:48:52.97 that I think demands more attention 00:48:53.00\00:48:55.34 when it comes to service. 00:48:55.37\00:48:57.03 And so what we want to do is build a team 00:48:57.06\00:49:00.26 that's gonna go out at the end of August 00:49:00.29\00:49:02.78 and you can get more details at the GYC booth this evening. 00:49:02.81\00:49:07.61 And we're going to go door to door, do canvassing. 00:49:07.64\00:49:10.77 One of the features is that we're going to raise money 00:49:10.80\00:49:13.91 for the education of the children. 00:49:13.94\00:49:18.47 And in addition to that, we'll also do health programs, 00:49:18.50\00:49:22.35 vacation bible school 00:49:22.38\00:49:24.04 and trying to create a holistic evangelism effort 00:49:24.07\00:49:28.27 that can demonstrate to them the holistic restoration 00:49:28.30\00:49:31.77 that God wants to bring about 00:49:31.80\00:49:33.60 in their lives and in their community. 00:49:33.63\00:49:35.53 So is this something that 00:49:35.56\00:49:36.75 people here can get involved with? 00:49:36.78\00:49:38.51 Absolutely, absolutely. 00:49:38.54\00:49:40.25 You can get involved like I said 00:49:40.28\00:49:41.50 by getting more information at the booth this evening, 00:49:41.53\00:49:45.02 but to begin the process of communication, 00:49:45.05\00:49:48.86 email us at missions@gycweb.org. 00:49:48.89\00:49:55.27 I already said that so that's confusing me. 00:49:55.30\00:49:58.33 at missions@gycweb.org and we can begin the dialogue 00:49:58.36\00:50:03.58 for getting you plugged into this mission trip. 00:50:03.61\00:50:05.65 Awesome. Thanks. 00:50:05.68\00:50:06.95 We're gonna ask David a couple of questions next 00:50:06.98\00:50:08.53 but you know, one thing that comes out 00:50:08.56\00:50:11.53 of just talking with these guys before coming up here is, 00:50:11.56\00:50:14.70 these are regular people and you know, 00:50:14.73\00:50:17.46 they have regular jobs but they are doing something, 00:50:17.49\00:50:20.59 you know, organizing a mission trip, 00:50:20.62\00:50:22.09 that doesn't have to go far away. 00:50:22.12\00:50:23.61 You don't need a passport. You don't need a visa. 00:50:23.64\00:50:26.92 You can just go there 00:50:26.95\00:50:30.07 and sometimes you can even drive there, right? 00:50:30.10\00:50:32.69 And, David, you are a part of a mission 00:50:32.72\00:50:35.07 that you had to drive a bit of a distance. 00:50:35.10\00:50:37.21 Yes, it was only about eight hours. 00:50:37.24\00:50:38.92 About eight hours? Yes. 00:50:38.95\00:50:39.98 Okay. But eight hour drive. 00:50:40.01\00:50:41.45 Yes. All right. 00:50:41.48\00:50:42.53 Eight hour drive. And which youth conference? 00:50:42.56\00:50:44.97 Eastern Canada Youth Conference. 00:50:45.00\00:50:46.18 Eastern Canada Youth Conference 00:50:46.21\00:50:47.24 and what did they do this past year, last year. 00:50:47.27\00:50:50.07 Last year, we had a mission in Manitoulin Island 00:50:50.10\00:50:52.44 which is a small island in Canada, Ontario. 00:50:52.47\00:50:55.50 And actually on the island 00:50:55.53\00:50:57.15 there's only one Adventist person in the whole island. 00:50:57.18\00:50:59.47 So our mission was to knock door to door 00:50:59.50\00:51:01.26 to get to know all the people on the island and-- 00:51:01.29\00:51:03.47 Oh, you said, it's an island in Canada-- 00:51:03.50\00:51:05.98 did you know there were islands in Canada? 00:51:06.01\00:51:09.75 But it's the largest island in Canada so I've heard 00:51:09.78\00:51:13.04 and there's only 170 Adventist family or a person. 00:51:13.07\00:51:17.14 Well, it's a family but only one Adventist person. 00:51:17.17\00:51:19.27 Oh, my, okay, on the entire island? 00:51:19.30\00:51:21.29 On the entire island. 00:51:21.32\00:51:22.35 So you guys went there to provide support 00:51:22.38\00:51:24.38 and try to minister to them. Yes. 00:51:24.41\00:51:26.07 And just quick snippet, anything-- 00:51:26.10\00:51:28.90 Oh, oh, I should ask your age too. 00:51:28.93\00:51:30.33 I don't ask the old people their age, you know, 00:51:30.36\00:51:32.27 but the young ones, how old? 00:51:32.30\00:51:33.61 I'm 17 years old. You're 17. 00:51:33.64\00:51:34.75 Okay, 17 year old David. 00:51:34.78\00:51:36.97 Any-- just a quick snippet, 00:51:37.00\00:51:38.51 something exciting that happened? 00:51:38.54\00:51:41.31 I'd say the most exciting thing 00:51:41.34\00:51:42.39 that happened to me personally was, 00:51:42.42\00:51:44.67 this one day when we were walking 00:51:44.70\00:51:45.73 and I just met a person who is drunk 00:51:45.76\00:51:47.36 and who's on the verge of committing suicide 00:51:47.39\00:51:49.44 and by the end of the mission he had given his life to Christ 00:51:49.47\00:51:52.20 and that really touched me personally, so. 00:51:52.23\00:51:53.67 Amen. 00:51:53.70\00:51:54.73 You praise the Lord for that. 00:51:54.76\00:51:56.02 Well, we have from the mission trip that happened in Canada, 00:51:56.05\00:52:01.42 a short video clip to show you from testimonies 00:52:01.45\00:52:05.27 that people had, but the take home message 00:52:05.30\00:52:07.06 that we're hoping to take from this is, 00:52:07.09\00:52:10.48 we can organize to do missions. 00:52:10.51\00:52:12.10 There are places right here in North America 00:52:12.13\00:52:14.93 that have not heard the gospel. 00:52:14.96\00:52:16.62 Whether if 170 Adventist were into a huge area 00:52:16.65\00:52:20.75 or there is only 170 Adventist Church 00:52:20.78\00:52:23.81 in a huge area and they could use the support, 00:52:23.84\00:52:25.75 they could use the energy that young people 00:52:25.78\00:52:27.43 can bring to the table. 00:52:27.46\00:52:28.74 So I want to encourage you to get involved, 00:52:28.77\00:52:30.86 organize something, let's do something 00:52:30.89\00:52:32.44 and finish the work. 00:52:32.47\00:52:33.86 And now we're gonna be seeing that video real quick. 00:52:33.89\00:52:35.79 Once considered the most effective 00:52:45.18\00:52:47.30 and efficient way of communicating 00:52:47.33\00:52:48.90 or delivering supplies, 00:52:48.93\00:52:50.70 door knocking is now uncomfortable 00:52:50.73\00:52:52.94 and quite frankly, very intimidating. 00:52:52.97\00:52:56.67 One never knows what awaits them on the other side. 00:52:56.70\00:53:03.16 Today, technology and digital communication 00:53:03.19\00:53:05.95 makes knocking on a stranger's door 00:53:05.98\00:53:08.46 seem pre-historic. 00:53:08.49\00:53:10.55 But is it possible that Literature Evangelism 00:53:10.58\00:53:13.36 still has a place in today's world? 00:53:13.39\00:53:16.49 Over the summer, this group of young people 00:53:20.18\00:53:22.72 push themselves to the limit, to find out. 00:53:22.75\00:53:26.18 The reason I came on this mission 00:53:38.45\00:53:40.83 was to serve Jesus here in Manitoulin. 00:53:40.86\00:53:43.62 After hearing about the population of Adventists 00:53:45.96\00:53:47.93 on the island, 00:53:47.96\00:53:49.05 I was very intrigued 00:53:49.08\00:53:50.50 and I wanted to be one of the people 00:53:50.53\00:53:53.28 who God used to actually bring the message to people 00:53:53.31\00:53:56.28 perhaps who've heard of it before, 00:53:56.31\00:53:58.35 who never knew Jesus before and so that's the very reason 00:53:58.38\00:54:01.13 I came to share my life in Manitoulin. 00:54:01.16\00:54:06.28 They were announcing GYC inter missions 00:54:06.31\00:54:08.83 and I heard they was one who went to Australia, 00:54:08.86\00:54:10.69 they were sent to New York and then I heard Canada. 00:54:10.72\00:54:14.22 And I was like, well, that's not really a mission trip 00:54:14.25\00:54:16.11 'cause that's like my backyard, you know. 00:54:16.14\00:54:18.45 You know, I decided well, I may take the house by myself. 00:54:18.48\00:54:21.95 It's gonna be my first canvassed house, by myself. 00:54:21.98\00:54:26.14 So for-- you guys know how people 00:54:26.17\00:54:30.02 When I first saw the door to door but, ah, 00:54:30.05\00:54:33.15 I really didn't want to do it. 00:54:33.18\00:54:34.66 When we got the packet that said, 00:54:34.69\00:54:36.22 half the group would be canvassing, 00:54:36.25\00:54:37.37 most probably we can have the group, 00:54:37.40\00:54:38.84 would it be, I was like, okay, 00:54:38.87\00:54:40.55 I hope I'm one in the bottom group. 00:54:40.58\00:54:43.38 But no, that wasn't at all. 00:54:43.41\00:54:46.68 We just prayed with her 00:54:46.71\00:54:47.74 and she was just surprised to see 00:54:47.77\00:54:49.12 that there's people still out there going 00:54:49.15\00:54:51.40 door to door and praying. 00:54:51.43\00:54:52.67 And you know, it was exciting new experience 00:54:52.70\00:54:54.87 and we're encouraging, we're ready for more. 00:54:54.90\00:54:56.91 Amen. 00:54:56.94\00:54:58.26 I had a really amazing experience here 00:54:58.29\00:55:01.01 with the health expo that we did, 00:55:01.04\00:55:02.79 being able to educate people about their health 00:55:02.82\00:55:05.20 as opposed to just trying to give them drugs 00:55:05.23\00:55:07.62 and medications to treat them. 00:55:07.65\00:55:09.36 Many times, it looked like we're gonna have pouring rain 00:55:09.39\00:55:12.99 and we just gathered together and prayed 00:55:13.02\00:55:15.55 and over and over and over we saw God, 00:55:15.58\00:55:18.61 you know, just holding the rain 00:55:18.64\00:55:20.82 and the clouds were there but no rain. 00:55:20.85\00:55:23.53 All my teammates are scared of dogs. 00:55:26.37\00:55:29.04 Now I love it and I'm so comfortable with it 00:55:32.57\00:55:34.93 and I don't want to stop. 00:55:34.96\00:55:36.74 I don't want to stop sharing, 00:55:36.77\00:55:37.93 I don't want to stop praying. 00:55:37.96\00:55:39.17 As I looked, I was just like, wow. 00:55:39.20\00:55:41.64 What if I had been selfish and stayed in the car? 00:55:41.67\00:55:45.24 That would have been one soul 00:55:45.27\00:55:46.30 that we have lost because of my selfishness. 00:55:46.33\00:55:49.11 Are we gonna give him every single ounce 00:55:49.14\00:55:51.26 that we have today? 00:55:51.29\00:55:53.39 Seeing that we only have just one more day. 00:55:53.42\00:55:56.33 Get up. Let's go. 00:55:56.36\00:55:57.78
