How many people did you train? 00:01:20.27\00:01:23.02 I think there were 1,400 total in those four countries. 00:01:23.05\00:01:25.62 Fourteen hundred people. 00:01:25.65\00:01:27.24 And about on an average 00:01:27.27\00:01:29.18 how many will those 1,400 people train, each one? 00:01:29.21\00:01:34.85 Ten? Ten. 00:01:34.88\00:01:37.00 They were supposed to train 10 more, yes. 00:01:37.03\00:01:39.64 Ten? Yeah. 00:01:39.67\00:01:40.72 So 1,400 times 10, what is that? 00:01:40.75\00:01:45.38 Fourteen thousand people hear the gospel by this program. 00:01:45.41\00:01:51.70 What else-- what was your-- 00:01:51.73\00:01:52.81 what other experience did you have there? 00:01:52.84\00:01:55.56 I was very impressed with their faithfulness. 00:01:55.59\00:01:58.98 When we got there in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, 00:01:59.01\00:02:02.85 the people, the laypeople were in church at 5:45 A.M. 00:02:02.88\00:02:08.69 How many people here go to church at 5:45 00:02:08.72\00:02:11.13 to do training for evangelism? 00:02:11.16\00:02:13.43 I don't see any hands up. 00:02:13.46\00:02:15.59 Ready to be trained. 00:02:15.62\00:02:17.23 And at 6:00 sharp the program started 00:02:17.26\00:02:20.29 with 300 laypeople ready to be trained. 00:02:20.32\00:02:23.05 After that they went to their respective work, 00:02:23.08\00:02:25.61 it was work day. 00:02:25.64\00:02:27.17 It's a weekday. 00:02:27.20\00:02:28.81 Praise God. 00:02:28.84\00:02:30.14 Leasa, tell us, now, you've done 00:02:30.17\00:02:32.37 some training too, haven't you? 00:02:32.40\00:02:33.78 I have. 00:02:33.81\00:02:34.84 I've done training in around in five continents 00:02:34.87\00:02:37.95 and this is my favorite evangelistic program 00:02:37.98\00:02:40.62 because anybody can do it. 00:02:40.65\00:02:42.79 And the youngest person 00:02:42.82\00:02:44.32 who ever held an evangelistic meeting, 00:02:44.35\00:02:46.92 using this material is seven years of age. 00:02:46.95\00:02:49.78 So today, I want everybody in here 00:02:49.81\00:02:51.83 who's over the age of seven to raise your hand. 00:02:51.86\00:02:54.98 Raise it really high. Okay, keep it up there. 00:02:55.01\00:02:58.29 Now the oldest person who used this program is 90. 00:02:58.32\00:03:02.44 Keep your hand up. 00:03:02.47\00:03:03.74 And so if you're under the age of 90 00:03:03.77\00:03:06.35 raise your other hand. 00:03:06.38\00:03:07.89 Okay, we're not Pentecostals but we can do this. 00:03:07.92\00:03:10.94 Okay. 00:03:10.97\00:03:12.10 So if you've got two hands raised 00:03:12.13\00:03:14.89 you are eligible to hold these meetings. 00:03:14.92\00:03:18.08 And this is probably one of the most effective 00:03:18.11\00:03:21.63 evangelistic tools that lay people can use 00:03:21.66\00:03:24.57 because we train people how to hold 00:03:24.60\00:03:27.44 evangelistic meetings in their homes, 00:03:27.47\00:03:29.83 to their neighbors, to their community 00:03:29.86\00:03:32.15 and it's very effective. 00:03:32.18\00:03:34.29 And Terry, I just want to share one statistic with you, okay. 00:03:34.32\00:03:38.14 Okay. 00:03:38.17\00:03:39.21 We did training in the country of Guatemala, 00:03:39.24\00:03:41.76 February 9 and 10. 00:03:41.79\00:03:44.11 Now in January, in that conference 00:03:44.14\00:03:46.72 they baptized 123 people. 00:03:46.75\00:03:49.21 Pretty good, right? 00:03:49.24\00:03:50.68 Okay, if your conference baptizes 123 people 00:03:50.71\00:03:53.10 in one month you'd be happy. 00:03:53.13\00:03:55.29 Well, in February, they baptized 178. 00:03:55.32\00:03:59.54 We did the training in February 9 and 10, 00:03:59.57\00:04:02.96 and then these laypeople that were trained 00:04:02.99\00:04:05.02 they took this material and they went to their homes 00:04:05.05\00:04:08.23 and held their meetings. 00:04:08.26\00:04:10.59 In April, they had a reaping baptism 00:04:10.62\00:04:13.92 and there were 843 people. 00:04:13.95\00:04:17.32 Now is there a difference between 123 and 848? 00:04:17.35\00:04:22.97 Yes. 00:04:23.00\00:04:24.03 Okay, there's a mathematician here. 00:04:24.06\00:04:25.33 He said 600. Okay. 00:04:25.36\00:04:27.63 Now, did a different God show up? 00:04:27.66\00:04:31.10 Okay. 00:04:31.13\00:04:32.16 Did a different Holy Spirit come? 00:04:32.19\00:04:34.42 Okay. 00:04:34.45\00:04:35.48 What was the difference? 00:04:35.51\00:04:38.33 It was members like us, right? 00:04:38.36\00:04:40.92 They got out from behind the TV 00:04:40.95\00:04:43.51 and they wet to work and God can bless. 00:04:43.54\00:04:47.42 So anybody can do it and I just encourage everybody. 00:04:47.45\00:04:50.83 Thank you. Twelve hundred, 1214. 00:06:03.83\00:06:06.58 So again, 1200 times 10 is what? 00:06:06.61\00:06:09.93 Twelve thousand. 00:06:09.96\00:06:11.01 So what if they go out and do it again? 00:06:11.04\00:06:12.70 What's 10 times? 00:06:12.73\00:06:14.63 Hundred and twenty thousand. 00:06:14.66\00:06:16.57 It grows. 00:06:16.60\00:06:17.63 Thanks, Norm. Thank you. 00:06:25.40\00:06:26.45 I am so excited you are here. 00:06:26.48\00:06:28.16 I am also excited. 00:06:28.19\00:06:29.68 Tell us where you are from 00:06:29.71\00:06:30.90 and share with us what's on your heart today. 00:06:30.93\00:06:34.22 Okay, I am from Southern African-Indian Ocean division 00:06:34.25\00:06:36.91 and the dream that is becoming reality is Angola. 00:06:36.94\00:06:41.09 Angola is a unique country. 00:06:41.12\00:06:43.36 As you might know, 400 years of colonization, 00:06:43.39\00:06:47.99 that is the history of that country, 00:06:48.02\00:06:49.67 then 40 years of civil and independence war, 00:06:49.70\00:06:53.58 isolating them from the whole world. 00:06:53.61\00:06:56.13 And now 10 years of peace. 00:06:56.16\00:06:58.86 And this is why the division has selected 00:06:58.89\00:07:01.88 as the big city project Luanda. 00:07:01.91\00:07:05.27 And few months ago Elder Ted Wilson was visiting 00:07:05.30\00:07:10.10 with the authorities of that country 00:07:10.13\00:07:11.92 and they asked the church 00:07:11.95\00:07:13.18 to be more active in their activities. 00:07:13.21\00:07:15.59 So we started in February 16, 00:07:15.62\00:07:18.29 the launching of what we call Hope for Angola, 00:07:18.32\00:07:21.25 Luanda for Christ. 00:07:21.28\00:07:22.71 Thirty thousand people in the stadium. 00:07:22.74\00:07:25.23 But the devil is working because some weeks before 00:07:25.26\00:07:27.94 one church run some evangelistic, 00:07:27.97\00:07:30.40 you know, meetings there and 16 people were dead 00:07:30.43\00:07:33.50 because the group of people there. 00:07:33.53\00:07:36.20 And then the government say, 00:07:36.23\00:07:37.27 no way, we will no longer authorize 00:07:37.30\00:07:39.78 churches to use as stadium. 00:07:39.81\00:07:41.51 And we were planning the 16th to launch. 00:07:41.54\00:07:44.47 Until Friday, one hour before sunset 00:07:44.50\00:07:48.15 we got the authorization from the government. 00:07:48.18\00:07:50.22 And them we launch, 00:07:50.25\00:07:51.73 after that 40 early mornings of prayer 00:07:51.76\00:07:54.91 using the book Step to Christ 00:07:54.94\00:07:57.14 and then broadcasting from South America Division, 00:07:57.17\00:08:00.79 40 programs for each week 00:08:00.82\00:08:04.13 and we start 39,000 small groups. 00:08:04.16\00:08:07.34 You see, Remnant Publication gave us Bibles, 00:08:07.37\00:08:10.37 Light Bearers, Bible studies 00:08:10.40\00:08:12.48 and we ended in July with 50 campaigns 00:08:12.51\00:08:16.71 with pastors coming from Brazil 00:08:16.74\00:08:18.77 and 100,000 people were attending, 2,000 per site. 00:08:18.80\00:08:23.63 And two Sabbath ago 00:08:23.66\00:08:24.85 we had what we call a Pentecostal Sabbath. 00:08:24.88\00:08:28.33 We baptized 3,750 people 00:08:28.36\00:08:31.46 in only one Sabbath as outcome of that. 00:08:31.49\00:08:34.40 So wait a minute here, 39,000 groups 00:08:34.43\00:08:37.22 and we had ministries cooperating. 00:08:37.25\00:08:38.98 We had Light Bearers? 00:08:39.01\00:08:40.75 Light Bearers, Remnant Publication. 00:08:40.78\00:08:43.58 And ShareHim came also with 10 students from theology 00:08:43.61\00:08:46.89 and they baptized more that 1,000. 00:08:46.92\00:08:48.76 Imagine those students now going back 00:08:48.79\00:08:51.01 and they have in their CV, I have preached in Africa, 00:08:51.04\00:08:54.05 and I have baptized hundreds of people. 00:08:54.08\00:08:55.95 This is fantastic. 00:08:55.98\00:08:57.01 Now tell us the rest of the story. 00:08:57.04\00:08:58.38 Well, we are hoping in 24 of August 00:08:58.41\00:09:01.47 to have now 10,000 laypeople involve in evangelism. 00:09:01.50\00:09:05.68 And then in the weekend of 21st of September, 00:09:05.71\00:09:10.16 pay attention to that-- This year? 00:09:10.19\00:09:12.44 This year, because we have baptized already 8,474 people 00:09:12.47\00:09:18.33 we want to train the newly baptized people with the DVDs, 00:09:18.36\00:09:22.77 the ones that you used, ASI North America. 00:09:22.80\00:09:25.66 And this is why I hope 00:09:25.69\00:09:27.06 that this young people here will come 00:09:27.09\00:09:28.80 and help us to train those people 00:09:28.83\00:09:31.41 because from October to November 00:09:31.44\00:09:33.35 we want to challenge them to bring one soul to Christ. 00:09:33.38\00:09:37.56 And in December one of the preachers 00:09:37.59\00:09:40.16 form South America Division, 00:09:40.19\00:09:41.46 the evangelism will come to run 00:09:41.49\00:09:43.07 an evangelist campaign in the same stadium 00:09:43.10\00:09:45.29 and only those who have been baptized 00:09:45.32\00:09:48.28 and bringing people to the Lord 00:09:48.31\00:09:50.06 will be able to attend those evangelistic campaigns. 00:09:50.09\00:09:53.49 So this is a huge scene but we have a challenge. 00:09:53.52\00:09:56.20 Now where to, you know, accommodate those people? 00:09:56.23\00:09:59.98 This is where Maranatha is also coming 00:10:00.01\00:10:01.89 and getting involved in this huge thing 00:10:01.92\00:10:04.42 because we need churches now to accommodate 00:10:04.45\00:10:06.95 those at least 8,000 newly baptized until now. 00:10:06.98\00:10:10.97 And how many people are you going to train in September? 00:10:11.00\00:10:15.97 Okay, September Sabbath 00:10:16.00\00:10:17.51 we are hoping to meet in four stadiums 00:10:17.54\00:10:20.30 because the government now allow us 00:10:20.33\00:10:21.80 only 25,000, 30,000 per stadium. 00:10:21.83\00:10:24.67 So we hope to have about 100,000. 00:10:24.70\00:10:27.56 And we are hoping to train at least 10,000 00:10:27.59\00:10:30.69 newly baptized member Friday before that Sabbath. 00:10:30.72\00:10:34.95 Amen. 00:13:08.52\00:13:13.61 Could it be that we do not... 00:13:13.64\00:13:17.16 give enough credence and enough emphasis, 00:13:17.19\00:13:22.25 and enough humble submission to the Word of God 00:13:22.28\00:13:28.09 and to the instruction of the Spirit of Prophecy? 00:13:28.12\00:13:31.83 Are we guilty of many of the same trans and sins 00:13:31.86\00:13:38.74 of the ancient Israelite people? 00:13:38.77\00:13:41.92 I want to tell you, brothers and sisters, 00:13:41.95\00:13:43.33 that's why we need revival and reformation. 00:13:43.36\00:13:47.91 That is why God has intended for His people 00:13:47.94\00:13:50.85 at the end of time to humble themselves, 00:13:50.88\00:13:54.35 to pray, to seek God's face, 00:13:54.38\00:13:56.56 to understand what it means to truly fulfill the mission, 00:13:56.59\00:14:02.94 the unique mission that God has entrusted 00:14:02.97\00:14:05.73 into the hands of Seventh-day Adventist. 00:14:05.76\00:14:09.45 We are to fall at the foot of the cross every day. 00:14:09.48\00:14:15.84 You see as we learned last night 00:14:15.87\00:14:18.72 in one of those beautiful testimonies 00:14:18.75\00:14:20.62 by the young people, 00:14:20.65\00:14:23.05 when you truly allow the power of God 00:14:23.08\00:14:25.74 to work in your life something dramatic happens. 00:14:25.77\00:14:30.95 I was thrilled as I listened 00:14:30.98\00:14:33.65 to the testimonies of those young people. 00:14:33.68\00:14:37.00 And as an introduction to our Sabbath school lesson 00:14:37.03\00:14:39.42 this morning by Pastor Mark Finley 00:14:39.45\00:14:41.82 and he is the author of those lessons 00:14:41.85\00:14:44.24 and God has provided at the right time, 00:14:44.27\00:14:47.94 and emphasis again on revival and reformation. 00:14:47.97\00:14:52.75 I want us to remember, we need to remember 00:14:52.78\00:14:57.68 how God has led us in the past 00:14:57.71\00:15:00.51 and His teaching in our past history 00:15:00.54\00:15:03.72 as Life Sketches page 196 indicates. 00:15:03.75\00:15:07.69 You see, the Israelites and their experience 00:15:07.72\00:15:12.78 is summarized in Jeremiah 7:23, 24, 00:15:12.81\00:15:18.73 and the Lord was speaking, 00:15:18.76\00:15:20.61 "But this is what I commanded them, saying, 00:15:20.64\00:15:22.58 Obey my voice, and I will be your God, 00:15:22.61\00:15:24.77 and you shall be my people and walk in all the ways 00:15:24.80\00:15:27.87 that I have commanded you, that it may be well with you. 00:15:27.90\00:15:32.47 Yet they did not obey or inclined their ear, 00:15:32.50\00:15:34.94 but followed the counsels 00:15:34.97\00:15:36.46 and the dictates of their evil heart, 00:15:36.49\00:15:39.50 and went backward, and not forward." 00:15:39.53\00:15:44.79 You see, lets transaction now to today. 00:15:44.82\00:15:49.99 Now scripture tells us in 1 Corinthians 10:11, 00:15:50.02\00:15:54.92 "Now all these things happen to them as examples 00:15:54.95\00:15:59.70 and they were written for our admonition 00:15:59.73\00:16:02.98 upon whom the ends of the ages have come." 00:16:03.01\00:16:07.73 And as we segue into our current modern setting 00:16:07.76\00:16:12.19 in the Seventh-day Adventist Church, 00:16:12.22\00:16:14.72 we need to remember God's council, never forget. 00:16:14.75\00:16:22.72 And as I already mentioned in Life Sketches, page 196, 00:16:22.75\00:16:27.82 "We have nothing to fear for the future, 00:16:27.85\00:16:29.45 except that we forget the way the Lord has led us, 00:16:29.48\00:16:34.01 and His teaching in our past history." 00:16:34.04\00:16:37.70 In April of this year 00:16:37.73\00:16:40.77 the General Conference Executive Committee 00:16:40.80\00:16:43.55 celebrated 150 years 00:16:43.58\00:16:48.05 of the establishment of the General Conference. 00:16:48.08\00:16:51.40 May 21, 1963, was exactly the date 00:16:51.43\00:16:55.82 upon which the General Conference was organized. 00:16:55.85\00:17:00.28 We chose to meet in Battle Creek 00:17:00.31\00:17:02.71 for our spring meeting of the executive committee. 00:17:02.74\00:17:05.54 We had a wonderful experience there. 00:17:05.57\00:17:07.66 Jim Nicks, our very able leader in the White Estate organized 00:17:07.69\00:17:12.55 many activities, many presentations, 00:17:12.58\00:17:15.95 many visits to historical sites. 00:17:15.98\00:17:19.07 It was a thrilling experience. 00:17:19.10\00:17:21.59 We met together in the Battle Creek Tabernacle 00:17:21.62\00:17:24.70 for the Sabbath services. 00:17:24.73\00:17:27.30 We met during our spring meeting in Battle Creek 00:17:27.33\00:17:31.81 to celebrate "150 years." 00:17:31.84\00:17:39.67 Let me pose the question to you, 00:17:39.70\00:17:42.70 was it really a very happy and good celebration? Amen. 00:22:35.83\00:22:38.94 God bless each one of you. 00:22:38.97\00:22:40.65 We are NAPS, 00:22:43.23\00:22:44.79 The National Association for the Prevention of Starvation, 00:22:44.82\00:22:49.36 a team of youth who have been active for 35 years. 00:22:49.39\00:22:54.97 When you look up here you may recognize 00:22:55.00\00:22:57.06 that there are some shirts that don't say NAPS on them, 00:22:57.09\00:23:01.01 that is because with us 00:23:01.04\00:23:02.55 is represented ASI Youth for Jesus. 00:23:02.58\00:23:06.08 We worked along with John Holien 00:23:06.11\00:23:08.92 and Pastor Scott this summer. 00:23:08.95\00:23:10.87 And the song that we're going to sing 00:23:10.90\00:23:13.23 today is a powerful song. 00:23:13.26\00:23:18.84 If I were to ask you, 00:23:18.87\00:23:19.96 how many of you are going through pain in your life? 00:23:19.99\00:23:23.43 Every hand would go up. 00:23:23.46\00:23:26.14 This song is coming up from Malawi, Africa, 00:23:26.17\00:23:29.37 and it's a song of hope, 00:23:29.40\00:23:31.64 saying even though you may go through pain, 00:23:31.67\00:23:35.60 you may have hard times 00:23:35.63\00:23:38.55 the devil may send his discouragements, 00:23:38.58\00:23:40.70 there's something that we can all do, we can pray. 00:23:40.73\00:23:46.54 Amen. 00:26:24.77\00:26:26.71 Our Sabbath school lesson, this quarter focuses especially 00:26:38.99\00:26:44.37 on the topic of revival and reformation. 00:26:44.40\00:26:47.65 It's possible to use terms and not define them. 00:26:47.68\00:26:52.50 When we talk about revival what specifically do we mean? 00:26:52.53\00:26:58.79 When we talk about reformation, what do we mean? 00:26:58.82\00:27:02.95 Revival is the reawakening of God's grace in the soul. 00:27:02.98\00:27:07.55 Revival has to do 00:27:07.58\00:27:09.29 with the reawakening of spiritual life. 00:27:09.32\00:27:12.99 It has to do with knowing Jesus, 00:27:13.02\00:27:16.46 a fresh and new every day, 00:27:16.49\00:27:19.14 like, Lamentations so well describes it. 00:27:19.17\00:27:21.82 "His mercies are new every morning." 00:27:21.85\00:27:25.37 So what is revival? Why do we need revival? 00:27:25.40\00:27:29.01 It's like an old hymn says, 00:27:29.04\00:27:30.76 "Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, 00:27:30.79\00:27:34.00 prone to leave the God I love. 00:27:34.03\00:27:36.84 Here's my heart, O take and seal it, 00:27:36.87\00:27:39.98 seal it with the things above." 00:27:40.01\00:27:42.72 So why does the church need revival? 00:27:42.75\00:27:45.75 When you and I come to Jesus 00:27:45.78\00:27:48.54 our hearts are transformed by His grace, 00:27:48.57\00:27:51.58 charmed by His love and changed. 00:27:51.61\00:27:55.41 But because we still have natures 00:27:55.44\00:27:58.70 that are falling, we tend to wander. 00:27:58.73\00:28:02.14 So God invites us everyday to come to the cross 00:28:02.17\00:28:06.38 to know Jesus a fresh and a new. 00:28:06.41\00:28:09.13 So revival is a daily experience 00:28:09.16\00:28:11.99 in the life of the believer. 00:28:12.02\00:28:13.85 It is daily experiencing God's grace. 00:28:13.88\00:28:17.46 There will never be a time 00:28:17.49\00:28:19.89 that believers do not need revival, 00:28:19.92\00:28:22.76 it's a daily experience. 00:28:22.79\00:28:24.91 What about reformation? 00:28:24.94\00:28:26.80 When we talk about reformation, 00:28:26.83\00:28:28.47 what are we speaking about? 00:28:28.50\00:28:29.99 We're speaking about reform 00:28:30.02\00:28:32.32 and the reformation in the days of Martin Luther. 00:28:32.35\00:28:35.32 When we talking about reformation, 00:28:35.35\00:28:37.11 what are we talking about? 00:28:37.14\00:28:38.37 We're talking about a change of diet, 00:28:38.40\00:28:39.97 a change of dress, a change of educational system, 00:28:40.00\00:28:42.83 change of medical system. 00:28:42.86\00:28:44.23 When you use the term reformation 00:28:44.26\00:28:46.68 it means quite ambiguous 00:28:46.71\00:28:48.63 and it may mean different things to different people. 00:28:48.66\00:28:50.94 In fact, there's actually group called Reform Adventist. 00:28:50.97\00:28:53.49 So when we talk about reformation, 00:28:53.52\00:28:54.99 what do we mean in a biblical sense? 00:28:55.02\00:28:57.84 Reformation in a biblical sense always follows revival. 00:28:57.87\00:29:01.48 Revival is this renew of the spiritual grace in the soul 00:29:01.51\00:29:05.61 but reformation has to do with the change of habits 00:29:05.64\00:29:10.99 and attitudes and thoughts 00:29:11.02\00:29:13.30 that leads me to a new lifestyle. 00:29:13.33\00:29:16.09 So revival always leads the reawakening of God's grace 00:29:16.12\00:29:20.68 and reformation has to do 00:29:20.71\00:29:22.20 with this reorganization of life, 00:29:22.23\00:29:25.51 this reorganization that habits, 00:29:25.54\00:29:27.73 this practical change of lifestyle 00:29:27.76\00:29:31.36 where God points out things in my life 00:29:31.39\00:29:33.36 through His Holy Spirit that need change. 00:29:33.39\00:29:36.33 Now in our series in the Sabbath school lesson 00:29:36.36\00:29:39.28 we are focusing on lesson number six 00:29:39.31\00:29:42.32 which is Confession of Repentance. 00:29:42.35\00:29:47.42 Why put a lesson on Confession on Repentance 00:29:47.45\00:29:50.88 in a series of revival and reformation? 00:29:50.91\00:29:53.13 Because as you look at revival down through the centuries, 00:29:53.16\00:29:57.55 you look at the revival in the history of Israel 00:29:57.58\00:29:59.48 with Josiah or look at David's prays in Psalms 00:29:59.51\00:30:03.52 or you look at the revival 00:30:03.55\00:30:05.80 in the days of the minor prophet, 00:30:05.83\00:30:07.96 they all focused on repentance and confession. 00:30:07.99\00:30:11.91 They all focused on coming to the point 00:30:11.94\00:30:15.35 of a deep sorrow for sin. 00:30:15.38\00:30:18.40 When you look at the Book of Acts, 00:30:18.43\00:30:20.59 repentance is all through the Book of Acts. 00:30:20.62\00:30:22.75 If you look at Acts 2, Acts 3, 00:30:22.78\00:30:25.24 Acts 16 and 17, Acts 20 and onward. 00:30:25.27\00:30:29.34 There is a great emphasis on repentance and confession. 00:30:29.37\00:30:33.68 Now, one of things I want to do in the time 00:30:33.71\00:30:35.39 we have together today is focus on this aspect 00:30:35.42\00:30:40.91 that if repentance leaves you in a place of sorrow 00:30:40.94\00:30:47.38 focusing on your own sins 00:30:47.41\00:30:49.82 that's not true repentance at all. 00:30:49.85\00:30:52.31 The object of repentance is not to leave an individual 00:30:52.34\00:30:57.08 more discouraged than before they repented. 00:30:57.11\00:31:00.29 The object of all repentance 00:31:00.32\00:31:02.41 is to focus on the goodness of Jesus, 00:31:02.44\00:31:05.31 the marvels of His grace, the beauty of His love 00:31:05.34\00:31:10.13 so that I want to be more like Him. 00:31:10.16\00:31:12.93 Any approach to repentance that says, 00:31:12.96\00:31:15.74 oh, Lord, I'm so wretched. 00:31:15.77\00:31:17.44 Oh, Lord, I'm so wicked. 00:31:17.47\00:31:19.00 Oh, Lord, I'm so evil that leaves me 00:31:19.03\00:31:21.62 wallowing in my sin is not beneficial. 00:31:21.65\00:31:26.96 That repentance that leads me to see 00:31:26.99\00:31:29.33 how great Jesus is and long to be like Him 00:31:29.36\00:31:33.01 is a repentance that motivates lifestyle change. 00:31:33.04\00:31:37.39 Now, we look at repentance in Sunday's lesson. 00:31:37.42\00:31:41.39 Repentance God's gifts and if you have your Bible 00:31:41.42\00:31:44.05 I invite you to take it and turn to Acts the-- 00:31:44.08\00:31:47.51 Acts the 5th chapter, Acts the 5th chapter, 00:31:47.54\00:31:51.76 in my study of repentance there was something 00:31:51.79\00:31:54.14 that was quite obvious that I often overlooked. 00:31:54.17\00:31:58.19 Here's is the basic question, is repentance something 00:31:58.22\00:32:02.20 that we worked up or something that God places within? 00:32:02.23\00:32:08.24 Is repentance our desire 00:32:08.27\00:32:11.91 to work up an emotional sorrow for sin 00:32:11.94\00:32:15.46 or is repentance a gift that God gives us? 00:32:15.49\00:32:21.41 Acts the 5th chapter, 00:32:21.44\00:32:23.43 you're looking there at verses 30 to 32. 00:32:23.46\00:32:26.94 I want you to notice them carefully, Acts 5:30-32 00:32:26.97\00:32:33.51 "The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, 00:32:33.54\00:32:36.96 whom you murdered by hanging on a tree. 00:32:36.99\00:32:39.83 Him God has exalted to His right hand 00:32:39.86\00:32:42.75 to be Prince and Savior." 00:32:42.78\00:32:44.41 Three things of that of the passage so far. 00:32:44.44\00:32:46.80 First the passage talks about the crucifixion of Christ. 00:32:46.83\00:32:50.32 Christ hung on a tree. 00:32:50.35\00:32:51.42 Verse 30, second the passage 00:32:51.45\00:32:53.62 talks about the resurrection of Christ. 00:32:53.65\00:32:55.91 The God of our fathers who was-- 00:32:55.94\00:32:59.50 who raised up Jesus, resurrection. 00:32:59.53\00:33:02.20 Thirdly the text talks about 00:33:02.23\00:33:03.93 the high priest the ministry of Christ. 00:33:03.96\00:33:06.08 "Him God has exalted to His right hand 00:33:06.11\00:33:08.35 to be Prince and Savior." 00:33:08.38\00:33:10.11 So you have the death of Christ, 00:33:10.14\00:33:12.52 the ascension of Christ, the resurrection of Christ. 00:33:12.55\00:33:16.29 Now, notice, because of Christ death 00:33:16.32\00:33:19.69 because of Christ resurrection 00:33:19.72\00:33:22.04 because of Christ's high precisely ministry 00:33:22.07\00:33:24.47 "To give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins. 00:33:24.50\00:33:29.36 And we are His witnesses to these things, 00:33:29.39\00:33:32.19 so also is the Holy Spirit 00:33:32.22\00:33:34.36 whom God has given to those who obey Him." 00:33:34.39\00:33:36.27 Now, that text is packed, 00:33:36.30\00:33:38.04 Christ died, Christ resurrected. 00:33:38.07\00:33:41.39 Christ is our high priest 00:33:41.42\00:33:43.53 and He gives repentance to His people. 00:33:43.56\00:33:46.71 So, where does genuine repentance come from? 00:33:46.74\00:33:49.88 Where is it come from everybody? 00:33:49.91\00:33:52.25 Is repentance a gift? 00:33:52.28\00:33:54.68 Just as salvation is a gift, repentance is a gift. 00:33:54.71\00:33:58.45 So as I kneel before Jesus every day, 00:33:58.48\00:34:01.50 looking at the cross of Calvary, 00:34:01.53\00:34:03.89 seeing His goodness as I meditate upon His life, 00:34:03.92\00:34:07.97 as I walk with him 00:34:08.00\00:34:09.08 in the dusty streets of Galilee, 00:34:09.11\00:34:11.46 as I travel with him 00:34:11.49\00:34:12.70 down the cobble stone streets of Jerusalem, 00:34:12.73\00:34:15.70 as I see Jesus touch the eyes of the blind and they're open 00:34:15.73\00:34:19.11 and touch the ears of the deaf and they're unstop, 00:34:19.14\00:34:21.50 as I see Jesus touch the weathered man arm, 00:34:21.53\00:34:24.58 as I see Him break the bread and feed the 5,000, 00:34:24.61\00:34:27.75 as I see Him say, 00:34:27.78\00:34:28.83 to the woman caught in adultery go and sin no more. 00:34:28.86\00:34:31.71 I'm so charmed by His love 00:34:31.74\00:34:34.02 I see the difference between my worldliness 00:34:34.05\00:34:37.01 and my sin and Him. 00:34:37.04\00:34:39.32 I see Him and I say, Oh, Jesus, 00:34:39.35\00:34:41.93 grant to me the gift of repentance 00:34:41.96\00:34:44.63 and He places within my heart a sorrow for the difference 00:34:44.66\00:34:49.04 that I'm between my 40 week sinful life 00:34:49.07\00:34:52.82 in His glorious righteous life. 00:34:52.85\00:34:54.99 So, it is looking at Jesus that we are transformed. 00:34:55.02\00:34:59.68 It is by understanding His perfection 00:34:59.71\00:35:02.89 that we understand our imperfection. 00:35:02.92\00:35:05.95 It is seeing His strength that we recognize our weakness. 00:35:05.98\00:35:09.99 So notice repentance is a gift, 00:35:10.02\00:35:13.61 it is not something we work up 00:35:13.64\00:35:16.48 it is something He places within our heart 00:35:16.51\00:35:19.59 and it doesn't come by looking at our wretchedness, 00:35:19.62\00:35:23.46 our understanding of our wretchedness 00:35:23.49\00:35:25.96 comes from looking at Him. 00:35:25.99\00:35:28.48 When I look at myself I never see any possibility to be saved 00:35:28.51\00:35:32.95 but when I look at Jesus, 00:35:32.98\00:35:34.23 I see no possibility to be lost. 00:35:34.26\00:35:38.02 And so repentance is a gift if you'll notice in the lesson 00:35:38.05\00:35:43.61 I have quoted a statement 00:35:43.64\00:35:45.11 in the Acts of the Apostle page 36 you'll find it 00:35:45.14\00:35:49.28 in Sunday's lesson and you'll find it 00:35:49.31\00:35:51.28 in the middle of the page there, 00:35:51.31\00:35:53.70 "As the disciples waited 00:35:53.73\00:35:55.53 for the fulfillment of the promise" 00:35:55.56\00:35:57.78 that's the promise of the Holy Spirit. 00:35:57.81\00:36:00.03 Are we waiting for the fulfillment 00:36:00.06\00:36:02.94 of the promise of the out pouring of the Spirit of God 00:36:02.97\00:36:06.87 in latter rain power today? 00:36:06.90\00:36:08.59 Are we waiting for that? 00:36:08.62\00:36:10.67 Is God pouring out His spirit on the church today? 00:36:10.70\00:36:13.82 Certainly. 00:36:13.85\00:36:15.74 Do we see the showers of the early rain? 00:36:15.77\00:36:19.01 Definitely. 00:36:19.04\00:36:20.40 But before the coming of Christ 00:36:20.43\00:36:22.89 will there be an additional out pouring 00:36:22.92\00:36:25.93 of the spirits power in the latter rain 00:36:25.96\00:36:29.04 to enable us to finish the work? 00:36:29.07\00:36:32.34 Is that promise there? 00:36:32.37\00:36:34.55 The disciples waited for that promise. 00:36:34.58\00:36:38.94 When the disciples met in the other upper room, 00:36:38.97\00:36:41.66 there are about a 120 disciples that met in the upper room. 00:36:41.69\00:36:46.82 The population of the Roman Empire at the time 00:36:46.85\00:36:50.04 there are different population figures 00:36:50.07\00:36:52.64 that you have by various demographers 00:36:52.67\00:36:55.01 but it is probably about 550 to 600 million people. 00:36:55.04\00:37:00.73 So, about 600 million lived in the Roman Empire. 00:37:00.76\00:37:04.67 You have a 120 Christians that meet in the upper room 00:37:04.70\00:37:09.07 which is a ration of one to probably 00:37:09.10\00:37:13.37 at least about a half a million maybe 600,000. 00:37:13.40\00:37:18.90 So, one Christian to 600,000 people, 00:37:18.93\00:37:21.16 now, there's one Adventist to every today 00:37:21.19\00:37:26.17 about one Adventist to about every 130 people, 00:37:26.20\00:37:29.47 for about 400 people in the world today. 00:37:29.50\00:37:32.23 But one Adventist to 400 in the world today 00:37:32.26\00:37:34.94 but the amazing thing is that upper room 00:37:34.97\00:37:36.86 it was one to about 550,000 00:37:36.89\00:37:43.49 those disciples met they, sought God 00:37:43.52\00:37:47.82 and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit took place 00:37:47.85\00:37:50.79 and thousands were baptized in a few short years 00:37:50.82\00:37:55.28 till there is at least a million Christians 00:37:55.31\00:37:57.63 by the end of the first century. 00:37:57.66\00:37:59.61 The task that is before us 00:37:59.64\00:38:03.08 is no greater than the task that was before them. 00:38:03.11\00:38:06.00 In fact, it was more difficult often in the days, 00:38:06.03\00:38:08.29 the Roman Empire than it is today. 00:38:08.32\00:38:10.41 Many ways, if you look at that from sociological standpoint. 00:38:10.44\00:38:14.45 But here is the amazing thing, 00:38:14.48\00:38:16.12 they met they repented if there is sin, 00:38:16.15\00:38:19.22 they saw the beauty of Jesus holiness, 00:38:19.25\00:38:21.41 they entered into true sorrow God poured out His spirit 00:38:21.44\00:38:25.58 when the church is on its need looking at Jesus, 00:38:25.61\00:38:29.82 seeing ourselves as we are Christ manifest himself to us. 00:38:29.85\00:38:35.38 Our lives are transformed by His grace. 00:38:35.41\00:38:38.16 He empowers us by His spirit. 00:38:38.19\00:38:40.85 Now, the word, repentance in the Greek language 00:38:40.88\00:38:43.49 is a very fascinating word. 00:38:43.52\00:38:45.52 It is the word metanoeo. 00:38:45.55\00:38:47.29 Now, for long time I translated that word 00:38:47.32\00:38:50.69 from Greek to English in a very simple way. 00:38:50.72\00:38:53.35 And I would say you know the word metanoeo means 00:38:53.38\00:38:55.84 simply a change of attitude toward. 00:38:55.87\00:38:58.53 It does mean that 00:38:58.56\00:39:00.17 but if you look at the richness of the word metanoeo 00:39:00.20\00:39:03.16 in the Greek language repentance 00:39:03.19\00:39:04.90 it means much more than a change of attitude. 00:39:04.93\00:39:07.81 It means a change of attitude that motivates the will 00:39:07.84\00:39:12.67 and this is a literal translation of metanoeo 00:39:12.70\00:39:15.41 from the best Geek galaxy cards. 00:39:15.44\00:39:17.33 It is a change of attitude which transforms the will 00:39:17.36\00:39:24.29 and sets it in a direction of obedience. 00:39:24.32\00:39:27.85 You can have no true repentance 00:39:27.88\00:39:31.75 without a mindset for obedience. 00:39:31.78\00:39:35.71 Owe through repentance leads far beyond a sorrow 00:39:35.74\00:39:39.60 that is an emotional sorrow. 00:39:39.63\00:39:41.78 Repentance is not evaluated in the Bible 00:39:41.81\00:39:46.16 by my tears or by emotional grief. 00:39:46.19\00:39:49.71 It is evaluated in the Bible 00:39:49.74\00:39:52.98 by the desire for a lifestyle change. 00:39:53.01\00:39:56.45 Now, that leads us to Monday's lesson, 00:39:56.48\00:39:59.40 true repentance to find. 00:39:59.43\00:40:01.54 The story is told of a little boy 00:40:01.57\00:40:04.03 and this little boy had this habit 00:40:04.06\00:40:06.94 of leaving his room messy. 00:40:06.97\00:40:09.76 He was about nine years old 00:40:09.79\00:40:12.03 and much as his mom wanted to have his room clean 00:40:12.06\00:40:16.26 having clean his room he just had his real time. 00:40:16.29\00:40:19.68 Any of you have a child like that? 00:40:19.71\00:40:21.63 Clean your room please, 00:40:21.66\00:40:22.70 clean your room and he kept his room messy. 00:40:22.73\00:40:24.45 On this particular day, he got out all of his legos 00:40:24.48\00:40:27.66 and all of his toys and his room was a colossal mess. 00:40:27.69\00:40:32.21 So that night at family worship, 00:40:32.24\00:40:35.05 his mother felt that she needed to address that. 00:40:35.08\00:40:38.15 So she said, she talked about repentance 00:40:38.18\00:40:40.58 and sorrow for what you've done wrong 00:40:40.61\00:40:43.18 and she said, son, now, what you really need to repent 00:40:43.21\00:40:46.08 of is momma has told you clean your room, 00:40:46.11\00:40:47.99 clean your room, clean your room, 00:40:48.02\00:40:49.05 don't leave all your legos all around. 00:40:49.08\00:40:50.72 You need to repent so he knelt down 00:40:50.75\00:40:52.70 and prayed, prayed a prayer like this. 00:40:52.73\00:40:54.82 Dear Jesus, I'm so sorry 00:40:54.85\00:40:59.45 that I left my room so messy today 00:40:59.48\00:41:02.29 but it sure was fun. 00:41:02.32\00:41:05.79 Is that repentance? 00:41:05.82\00:41:07.42 Take your Bible please 2 Corinthians Chapter 7. 00:41:07.45\00:41:10.70 I'm so sorry, I left my room messy today 00:41:10.73\00:41:13.35 but I wish it was always fun. 00:41:13.38\00:41:15.17 2 Corinthians Chapter 7 00:41:15.20\00:41:18.28 and we look there at 2 Corinthians Chapter 7 00:41:18.31\00:41:22.80 and we are looking at verse 9 to 11. 00:41:22.83\00:41:26.97 2 Corinthians 7:9-11 00:41:27.00\00:41:30.56 is one of the best descriptions in the Bible 00:41:30.59\00:41:34.14 about genuine repentance and what it's about. 00:41:34.17\00:41:37.55 2 Corinthians 7:9, 00:41:37.58\00:41:40.08 "Now I rejoice, not that you were made sorry." 00:41:40.11\00:41:45.20 Now, Paul is writing to the Corinthians 00:41:45.23\00:41:48.28 he has written the first letter to the Corinthians 00:41:48.31\00:41:50.82 and somebody said that, 00:41:50.85\00:41:52.12 the church of Corinth was pause, excreted and headache. 00:41:52.15\00:41:56.04 The church at Corinth members were suing one another, 00:41:56.07\00:42:00.95 they were abusing the Lord's supper. 00:42:00.98\00:42:03.19 One of the big problems at Corinth was that 00:42:03.22\00:42:05.36 there was immorality in the church 00:42:05.39\00:42:07.97 it was so bad that there was incest in the Corinthian church 00:42:08.00\00:42:12.54 you can read about that 2 Corinthians 5 and onward. 00:42:12.57\00:42:15.01 And the Corinthians weren't dealing 00:42:15.04\00:42:16.53 with sin in the church at all. 00:42:16.56\00:42:18.39 They were treating it very, very lightly 00:42:18.42\00:42:21.36 and so the apostle Paul wrote to them 1 Corinthians 00:42:21.39\00:42:25.86 and as he did, it broke their hearts 00:42:25.89\00:42:28.69 and they entered into genuine sorrow 00:42:28.72\00:42:32.22 about the toleration of sin that they had in the church. 00:42:32.25\00:42:35.95 And Paul writes to them in 2 Corinthians 7:9 00:42:35.98\00:42:40.66 "Now I rejoice, not that you were made sorry." 00:42:40.69\00:42:44.07 That is sorry by my letter 00:42:44.10\00:42:45.68 "but that your sorrow led to repentance." 00:42:45.71\00:42:48.38 So if that sorrow leads to repentance 00:42:48.41\00:42:51.22 can you have sorrow with out repentance? 00:42:51.25\00:42:52.75 You can. 00:42:52.78\00:42:53.88 You can be sorry because what you did 00:42:53.91\00:42:57.25 is gonna cause circumstances in your own life. 00:42:57.28\00:43:00.41 You can be sorry that you said something 00:43:00.44\00:43:02.93 to your husband or wife and they got mad. 00:43:02.96\00:43:05.16 You can be sorry 00:43:05.19\00:43:06.67 that you're dishonest and you got caught. 00:43:06.70\00:43:08.82 You can be sorry, 00:43:08.85\00:43:10.19 for the consequences of the action 00:43:10.22\00:43:12.52 but not that your action broke the heart of God. 00:43:12.55\00:43:15.37 See, true repentance is not that I'm sorry 00:43:15.40\00:43:18.23 because of the consequences 00:43:18.26\00:43:19.89 what happened to me because I sinned. 00:43:19.92\00:43:21.95 True repentance is I'm so sorry, 00:43:21.98\00:43:24.48 because I dishonored God. 00:43:24.51\00:43:26.50 I'm so sorry, that I hurt another person. 00:43:26.53\00:43:29.45 I'm so sorry, that my words cut deeply into your heart. 00:43:29.48\00:43:33.95 I'm so sorry, that I criticized you, 00:43:33.98\00:43:36.55 And I'm so sorry, that I talk behind your back 00:43:36.58\00:43:38.78 and it severed our relationship. 00:43:38.81\00:43:40.47 And I'm so sorry, 00:43:40.50\00:43:41.54 that in all of that I dishonored God. 00:43:41.57\00:43:43.41 You see true repentance is when I'm on my knees 00:43:43.44\00:43:46.88 saying Jesus, You love me so much. 00:43:46.91\00:43:49.46 Jesus, your grace is so amazing. 00:43:49.49\00:43:52.21 Jesus, I hurt You with what I did. 00:43:52.24\00:43:55.10 So until my sin gives me the pain 00:43:55.13\00:44:00.00 that it brings to the heart of God 00:44:00.03\00:44:02.07 I'll never turn lose of it. 00:44:02.10\00:44:03.98 And so this is what Paul is praying about here, 00:44:04.01\00:44:06.54 this is what he's talking about in 2 Corinthians 7:9 00:44:06.57\00:44:10.61 "Now I rejoice, not that you were made sorry, 00:44:10.64\00:44:15.59 but that your sorrow led to repentance. 00:44:15.62\00:44:18.31 But you were made sorry in a godly manner, 00:44:18.34\00:44:21.23 that you might suffer loss for us in nothing. 00:44:21.26\00:44:24.07 For godly sorrow produces repentance to salvation, 00:44:24.10\00:44:29.44 not to be regretted 00:44:29.47\00:44:30.67 but the sorrow of the world produces death." 00:44:30.70\00:44:32.56 So there's two kind of sorrow. 00:44:32.59\00:44:34.29 Godly sorrow that produces repentance. 00:44:34.32\00:44:36.89 What is repentance? 00:44:36.92\00:44:38.28 It's a change of attitude throughout my sin. 00:44:38.31\00:44:40.48 The thing I wants to love I now hate. 00:44:40.51\00:44:42.97 The thing I once did casually 00:44:43.00\00:44:45.00 now I turn away from it in aberrance. 00:44:45.03\00:44:47.08 The thing that I once enjoyed doing now I love to do 00:44:47.11\00:44:51.22 but its more than that it is the setting of the direction 00:44:51.25\00:44:55.59 of the will to choose to let the thing 00:44:55.62\00:44:59.29 which I cherished that broke the heart of God go 00:44:59.32\00:45:02.63 because I no longer want to break His heart. 00:45:02.66\00:45:05.52 So, it looks at Jesus. 00:45:05.55\00:45:07.68 Now, notice the text verse 9, 00:45:07.71\00:45:10.93 Now I rejoice, that you were made sorry, 00:45:10.96\00:45:13.94 but that you are-- 00:45:13.97\00:45:15.43 "Now I rejoice, not that you were made sorry, 00:45:15.46\00:45:18.32 but that your sorrow led to repentance." 00:45:18.35\00:45:20.38 Verse 10," Godly sorrow produces repentance." 00:45:20.41\00:45:23.40 Now, notice this verse 11, it's very interesting, 00:45:23.43\00:45:27.05 "For observe this very thing, 00:45:27.08\00:45:29.24 that you sorrowed in a godly manner, 00:45:29.27\00:45:32.45 What diligence it produced in you." 00:45:32.48\00:45:35.15 Now, when you sorrow in a godly manner 00:45:35.18\00:45:37.91 it produces something. 00:45:37.94\00:45:39.50 What's the first thing that it produces? 00:45:39.53\00:45:41.20 What is it produced? Diligence. 00:45:41.23\00:45:44.17 Another words, when I sorrow in a godly manner 00:45:44.20\00:45:47.71 and see that my sin is broken the heart of God 00:45:47.74\00:45:51.09 and I see the grace of Jesus 00:45:51.12\00:45:53.37 I become more diligent not to do that thing again. 00:45:53.40\00:45:57.66 So, what clearing of yourselves 00:45:57.69\00:46:01.67 when you sorrow in a godly manner 00:46:01.70\00:46:04.94 if you have hurt another person, 00:46:04.97\00:46:08.18 you want to clear up that situation 00:46:08.21\00:46:11.10 between you and the other person. 00:46:11.13\00:46:14.32 If you've injured somebody else, 00:46:14.35\00:46:17.07 If you've been dishonest godly sorrow and repentance 00:46:17.10\00:46:22.55 when I recognize I broken God's heart 00:46:22.58\00:46:25.62 leads me to others to reconcile 00:46:25.65\00:46:29.30 if I broken their heart. 00:46:29.33\00:46:31.69 It says what indignation? 00:46:31.72\00:46:34.33 What does it mean, what indignation? 00:46:34.36\00:46:36.06 How does godly sorrow lead to indignation? 00:46:36.09\00:46:38.44 Indignation is a form of strong anger. 00:46:38.47\00:46:42.20 What is that mean? 00:46:42.23\00:46:43.61 It means that I'm upset about the thing that I've done. 00:46:43.64\00:46:49.03 I've indignation toward what I've done 00:46:49.06\00:46:51.87 and I want to make it right. 00:46:51.90\00:46:53.93 "What fear, what vehement desire, 00:46:53.96\00:46:57.54 what zeal, what vindication! 00:46:57.57\00:47:00.11 In all things you proved yourselves 00:47:00.14\00:47:02.04 to be clear in this matter." 00:47:02.07\00:47:04.64 So, true repentance is this godly sorrow, 00:47:04.67\00:47:08.50 because I broken God's heart 00:47:08.53\00:47:10.43 that sets my will in a new direction 00:47:10.46\00:47:13.44 that gives me an indignation or a hatred towards sin 00:47:13.47\00:47:16.75 and enables me to desire to live differently. 00:47:16.78\00:47:21.62 We talk about true and false confession in Tuesday's lesson 00:47:21.65\00:47:27.79 and there is a statement 00:47:27.82\00:47:29.87 in the books "Steps to Christ" page 38 00:47:29.90\00:47:33.73 that I would like to take a look at 00:47:33.76\00:47:35.05 but before we do that let's look at Leviticus 5:5. 00:47:35.08\00:47:40.22 Let's got to Leviticus 5 00:47:40.25\00:47:41.54 this takes us back to the ancient sanctuary. 00:47:41.57\00:47:44.63 Leviticus 5:5, in the ancient sanctuary 00:47:44.66\00:47:49.74 when somebody sin they of course 00:47:49.77\00:47:51.40 brought in all offering some times a lamb 00:47:51.43\00:47:53.43 and there were other offerings 00:47:53.46\00:47:54.54 and the poor brought a pigeon offering or grain offering. 00:47:54.57\00:47:57.85 In Leviticus 5:5 00:47:57.88\00:48:00.52 there is a clear Bible text about what happened 00:48:00.55\00:48:03.91 when the person brought their offering. 00:48:03.94\00:48:05.92 It has to do with repentance 00:48:05.95\00:48:07.58 and it has to do with confession. 00:48:07.61\00:48:09.90 Leviticus 5:5 it says, 00:48:09.93\00:48:12.79 "And it shall be, when he shall be guilty 00:48:12.82\00:48:15.12 in any of these things, that he shall confess 00:48:15.15\00:48:18.61 that he has sinned in that thing." 00:48:18.64\00:48:21.26 What does this Bible passage tell you 00:48:21.29\00:48:24.33 about the nature of true confession? 00:48:24.36\00:48:28.66 That true confession is what? 00:48:28.69\00:48:31.06 Very specific. 00:48:31.09\00:48:32.46 Has anybody ever come to you and say, 00:48:32.49\00:48:34.20 you know if I hurt you by what I said please forgive me. 00:48:34.23\00:48:39.54 If I hurt you, what do you know when they say that? 00:48:39.57\00:48:43.96 It's not genuine repentance. 00:48:43.99\00:48:46.19 Genuine repentance is I'm so sorry 00:48:46.22\00:48:49.66 that I said this specific thing about you. 00:48:49.69\00:48:52.69 I've gone to the people that I said it to 00:48:52.72\00:48:55.36 and I have asked them to forgive me. 00:48:55.39\00:48:57.17 And because I've hurt your reputation 00:48:57.20\00:48:59.61 please forgive me. 00:48:59.64\00:49:00.96 That's genuine repentance. 00:49:00.99\00:49:03.16 In the Old Testament when a person came with their lamb 00:49:03.19\00:49:08.10 they confess the specific thing. 00:49:08.13\00:49:10.78 Lord, I got angry with my neighbor. 00:49:10.81\00:49:13.35 Lord, I've stolen something. 00:49:13.38\00:49:16.38 True confession and repentance is always specific. 00:49:16.41\00:49:21.45 When I get on my knees and pray 00:49:21.48\00:49:23.22 I don't say Lord, if I've sinned. 00:49:23.25\00:49:24.46 I say Lord, I watched that on television 00:49:24.49\00:49:28.42 and I know that that is not in harmony with Your will 00:49:28.45\00:49:31.56 but I seemed to be addicted to it. 00:49:31.59\00:49:34.56 Looking at Jesus and His greatness 00:49:34.59\00:49:37.08 and His goodness and His grace and His mercy 00:49:37.11\00:49:39.68 and how pure You were Lord, make my heart pure 00:49:39.71\00:49:43.35 and take that wretched desire out of my soul. 00:49:43.38\00:49:46.47 Lord I'm jealous of that person. 00:49:46.50\00:49:48.89 Please, Lord, take that jealously 00:49:48.92\00:49:50.74 out of my heart and soul. 00:49:50.77\00:49:52.02 So true confession is always what everybody? 00:49:52.05\00:49:56.57 Specific in nature. 00:49:56.60\00:49:58.27 Now, let's go to Ellen White statement. 00:49:58.30\00:49:59.64 This is an remarkable statement 00:49:59.67\00:50:01.07 that will help somebody here today? 00:50:01.10\00:50:03.04 True confession it is page 00:50:03.07\00:50:07.18 it is under the section of Tuesday 00:50:07.21\00:50:09.45 the page 49 the middle of the page, 00:50:09.48\00:50:13.36 "True confession is always of a" 00:50:13.39\00:50:15.13 what kind of character those who have? 00:50:15.16\00:50:16.83 "Specific character, 00:50:16.86\00:50:18.10 and acknowledges particular sins." 00:50:18.13\00:50:20.38 Then there's three things, "They may be of such a nature 00:50:20.41\00:50:24.37 as to be brought before God and God only." 00:50:24.40\00:50:27.44 Where our most sins of our sins brought before? 00:50:27.47\00:50:30.43 Before who? God and God only. 00:50:30.46\00:50:33.04 Now, notice. 00:50:33.07\00:50:34.10 "They may be wrongs that should be confessed 00:50:34.13\00:50:37.11 to individuals who have suffered injury through them" 00:50:37.14\00:50:41.19 and it goes on to say, 00:50:41.22\00:50:43.14 "they may be of a public character, 00:50:43.17\00:50:45.14 and should then be as publicly confessed." 00:50:45.17\00:50:47.34 How do you know, when to confess sin publicly 00:50:47.37\00:50:50.38 and how do you know whether the confession 00:50:50.41\00:50:52.16 of that sin publicly would be detrimental 00:50:52.19\00:50:55.41 to you and the church? 00:50:55.44\00:50:56.70 Let me give you a clear rule of thumb 00:50:56.73\00:50:58.14 and here is what it is. 00:50:58.17\00:51:02.02 You repair the fence where it's broken. 00:51:02.05\00:51:07.39 You repair the fence where it's broken. 00:51:07.42\00:51:10.69 If I have a farm and I fence on the north, 00:51:10.72\00:51:14.05 south, east and west and the fence on the north 00:51:14.08\00:51:19.52 is broken and the sheep and cattle are getting out 00:51:19.55\00:51:22.79 and I repair them-- 00:51:22.82\00:51:23.85 I try to repair the fence on the south 00:51:23.88\00:51:26.35 that is nonsensical. 00:51:26.38\00:51:28.92 So here is the point, if my sin is between me and God 00:51:28.95\00:51:32.94 that need not be in anyway we may public. 00:51:32.97\00:51:36.66 I confess it to Him. 00:51:36.69\00:51:39.45 But if I've stolen something from you 00:51:39.48\00:51:42.84 I don't confess to the church 00:51:42.87\00:51:45.03 that I stole something from Brother Steve or Sister Smith. 00:51:45.06\00:51:48.77 I go to them and talk to them about that. 00:51:48.80\00:51:51.65 That's not between them and the church 00:51:51.68\00:51:53.48 the fence was not broken there. 00:51:53.51\00:51:56.40 But if I live a profligate life 00:51:56.43\00:52:01.28 after becoming a Christian of open rebellion, 00:52:01.31\00:52:06.62 and defame the name of God 00:52:06.65\00:52:09.43 and the youth and others in the church know it, 00:52:09.46\00:52:12.51 there maybe a time at that point 00:52:12.54\00:52:14.79 where I come and say you know, 00:52:14.82\00:52:16.56 I've lived a life out of harmony with God's purpose. 00:52:16.59\00:52:20.26 It's publicly known that I've come to Jesus 00:52:20.29\00:52:23.95 and my life has been changed. 00:52:23.98\00:52:25.47 I want to honor him. 00:52:25.50\00:52:27.09 So when do you make public confession? 00:52:27.12\00:52:29.99 Only when there is public sin that is publicly known. 00:52:30.02\00:52:35.93 If the sin is between you and somebody else, 00:52:35.96\00:52:39.57 you don't publicly confess that to the church. 00:52:39.60\00:52:41.38 You go to that person why? 00:52:41.41\00:52:43.83 Because you want to rebuild 00:52:43.86\00:52:45.58 the relationship with that person. 00:52:45.61\00:52:49.47 Notice, confession what is it?
