devil has had a field day with

and tried to distract us
and remove us from knowing

the truth about this subject.
And tonight as we unpack it,

as we study it, we
ask for the subject

of this topic to be
with us: the Holy Spirit.

will speak through the Word

about the sanctified life

Holy Spirit and the function

Holy Spirit in our lives.

The Holy Spirit is a topic that
is again, one of these topics

that is to be avoided by many

because the devil has really
tried to attack this truth.

I have had personal experience
and witnessed in my journey

the type of charisma that exists
in some non-Adventist churches
00:10:24.24\00:10:29.26
out there with reference to
the work of the Holy Spirit.

There's a real deception
on what the Holy Spirit does
00:10:32.62\00:10:36.83
in our lives. There's
a real confusion by many.
00:10:37.03\00:10:39.31
There are many out there
that just don't understand
00:10:39.41\00:10:42.03
what is the true Biblical
teaching on the Holy Spirit.
00:10:42.23\00:10:45.98
In 1906 there was a
revival of what is now called
00:10:46.56\00:10:51.33
the modern-day
Pentecostal Charismatic Movement
00:10:51.53\00:10:54.83
in Azusa Street in Los Angeles.
00:10:54.93\00:10:57.99
And this date marked
the beginning of all of the
00:10:58.19\00:11:03.33
manifestations that we
have now seen over the last
00:11:03.43\00:11:06.54
few decades. For example:
00:11:06.64\00:11:08.75
we have witnessed things
like the Toronto Blessing.
00:11:09.06\00:11:12.89
Do you remember the Toronto
Blessing a few years back
00:11:13.09\00:11:15.36
where people thought that
the Holy Spirit's manifestation
00:11:15.56\00:11:18.86
was to incite a
holy laughter as it were
00:11:18.96\00:11:24.24
amongst the congregation.
So people would be falling
00:11:24.44\00:11:27.16
out of their pews in
church dying of laughter
00:11:27.26\00:11:30.96
and that was thought of as
the presence of the Holy Spirit
00:11:31.17\00:11:35.87
in peoples' lives. And
there was mass hysteria.
00:11:36.07\00:11:38.73
You'd have to see it to
believe it: where ministers
00:11:38.93\00:11:41.80
prance around on the stage
and people would literally just
00:11:41.90\00:11:44.74
fall on the ground
laughing of all things
00:11:44.94\00:11:47.92
sensing the Spirit in that way.
00:11:49.00\00:11:52.07
Then of course we've
all seen the healings
00:11:52.47\00:11:57.40
that occur en masse.
And the modern-day version
00:11:57.60\00:12:01.67
is the prophesying
where most people believe
00:12:01.80\00:12:04.67
they have the gift of prophecy
and they will just approach you
00:12:04.77\00:12:07.08
and prophesy over
you with the Spirit.
00:12:07.28\00:12:11.17
And for me, this is a
gross distortion - all of these
00:12:12.16\00:12:15.83
manifestations - on
what the Bible teaches
00:12:15.93\00:12:18.51
about the work and function
of the Holy Spirit in our lives.

And the reason I
think it's a Satanic attack

is because I think
the Holy Spirit is the key
00:12:25.34\00:12:28.15
along with the Word of
God for our sanctification.

It is the key... it is the key!

And unless we understand
the Holy Spirit's attributes
00:12:34.62\00:12:38.38
and function then we cannot
grow and mature as Christians,

as believers, as
Seventh-day Adventists.

I had a personal experience
years ago when I was much
00:12:45.48\00:12:48.49
younger. I told you that
I used to sing in a group.
00:12:48.59\00:12:51.05
It was an Adventist group...
it was a Christian group.
00:12:51.25\00:12:53.85
We would travel to different
churches and many other
00:12:54.05\00:12:56.36
Protestant churches to sing.
00:12:56.46\00:12:58.70
And I remember a time when
I had just joined this group.
00:12:58.90\00:13:01.79
I went and sat near the front
and I noticed that a lot of
00:13:01.99\00:13:05.47
the other team members of
the group were not sitting
00:13:05.57\00:13:07.68
anywhere near the
front... they were at the back.
00:13:07.78\00:13:09.57
I thought it was strange.

That I was being a diligent
minister and sitting in the
00:13:12.41\00:13:16.73
front wanting to just be
part of the worship service.

Little did I know
what was to happen.

After the preacher finished
and after we had our segment

of singing the preacher
started to call people up
00:13:27.18\00:13:30.20
and they started to
all stand up around me.

And then the preacher proceeded
to kind of lay hands on people
00:13:33.22\00:13:37.44
and they would
fall flat on their backs
00:13:37.54\00:13:39.71
as if convulsing around me.

I had never seen
anything like this in my life

and I was - to be
honest - frightened, scared.

The whole time that
was going on I was praying

that God would
keep me safe from that.

It just didn't resemble
to me what the Bible teaches

on the work of the Holy Spirit.

There was no
resemblance whatsoever. In fact,

it was chaos. There was a
lot of emotion or hype involved

but there was very little
Christ-likeness and very little
00:14:12.61\00:14:15.91
function. And this misunder-
standing of the Holy Spirit

is not new. It dates
back to the very early church.
00:14:20.02\00:14:22.80
In fact, at the beginning
of the Christian church
00:14:23.01\00:14:25.31
there was a lot of
debate over the nature of Christ
00:14:25.41\00:14:27.58
and very little was said about
the nature of the Holy Spirit.

There wasn't much of an
understanding on the nature
00:14:31.59\00:14:34.14
of the Holy Spirit. At the
Council of Nicaea in 325 AD
00:14:34.24\00:14:37.67
and then Constantinople -
381 AD - they had nothing much
00:14:37.97\00:14:41.60
to say. So as a result of
these things that have happened
00:14:41.70\00:14:46.99
I believe that many of
us fall into two camps.
00:14:47.20\00:14:49.78
We either embrace this
emotional hype and we want to
00:14:49.99\00:14:53.37
sense the Spirit
in that way OR...
00:14:53.47\00:14:56.61
we want to just
avoid that all together
00:14:57.01\00:15:00.04
and not even discuss the
subject of the Holy Spirit.
00:15:00.14\00:15:02.90
And I fear that's
what's happened in many of our
00:15:03.10\00:15:06.19
churches. We're
afraid of the topic.

We don't want to
look like charismatics.

We don't want any
of that crazy stuff
00:15:11.13\00:15:14.13
and so we don't even
talk about it and we overlook

one of the most important
functions in our spiritual life.

You know, from the creation
event onwards the Holy Spirit

has been playing an
active and present role

throughout the
Bible. We often forget this.

The Holy Spirit was very much
present in the Old Testament

carrying out a specific function
in the lives of God's people.

And of course we see the
Holy Spirit is prominent in the

New Testament. But there was
a stream running right through
00:15:47.33\00:15:50.49
the Bible of the Holy Spirit's
work. And I just want to

do a bit of a survey
with you so we can see
00:15:53.49\00:15:55.86
what was the Holy Spirit
up to in the old covenant?

In the Old Testament
what did the Holy Spirit do?

Did it have a function?

And then I want to go
on to the New Testament...

And then let's see if we
can apply it to ourselves today.

starting from verse 1.

We're starting in Exodus at the
very outset of the scriptures

chapter 31 verses 1 to 5.

Now this is a verse that you
probably haven't heard too much

in sermons but I think
it's an important one for us

to kick off. Exodus 31 verse 1.

It says: "Then
the Lord said to Moses

'See I have chosen Bezaleel
son of Uri, the son of Hur,

of the tribe of
Judah and I have filled him

with the Spirit of God

with wisdom,
understanding, with knowledge

and with all kinds of
skills to make artistic designs

for working gold,
silver, and bronze.

To cut and set stones.

To work in wood and
engage in all kinds of crafts.

Moreover, I have appointed

to all the skilled workers

And then it goes on to
say they came to meeting,

the ark of the covenant of the
law, the atonement cover on it.

They were given a specific gift

by the Holy Spirit that
was a very functional gift.

It says here that
they were given wisdom

by the Holy Spirit. Says
they were given understanding.

It says they were given
knowledge from the Holy Spirit

and even practical
skill. Did you notice that?

The Holy Spirit empowered these
men to carry out some practical

tasks. The Holy Spirit
would come on them for a time

and they would
function in this way

and be empowered
to do those tasks.

of the Holy Spirit's function

of Meeting that they may stand

couple that were on the brink

And I've learned now

a lot of different paintings

coming in. And the two finalists
that he was torn between

were two completely
different paintings.

One was of a very calm lake

with a boat sitting
calmly on top of this lake.

The sky was beautifully sunny.

It was a beautiful picture
of peace as we would consider

peace to be.

And yet there was one painting
where it depicted a raging,

raging waterfall. And
the king ends up picking

or choosing this raging
waterfall over the other

calm painting. And
then people asked him:

"Why did you choose this
painting over the other one?

This one seems so chaotic.
There's no peace in that. "

beyond that waterfall.

Look just behind that waterfall

So in summary, a life of

throne with all of these other
