Amen. Amen. 00:04:45.72\00:04:49.14 Work in the cities. 00:04:49.17\00:04:50.92 And I'm so happy to have with me today, 00:04:50.95\00:04:53.74 representing the Atlanta area Debbie Wallace. 00:04:53.77\00:04:56.67 Debbie comes right up here with me. 00:04:56.70\00:04:59.03 Debbie is working in a ministry in downtown Atlanta. 00:04:59.06\00:05:03.17 And her church was involved in a food distribution program 00:05:03.20\00:05:08.61 reaching out to about how many people each week? 00:05:08.64\00:05:11.15 About 1,200 families each week, 1,200. 00:05:11.18\00:05:14.76 That's a big responsibility. That's a huge ministry. 00:05:14.79\00:05:19.90 What we were seeing is that, more every week, 00:05:19.93\00:05:22.38 more and more people with the economic downturn. 00:05:22.41\00:05:25.38 We were finding that families, a typical families, 00:05:25.41\00:05:30.18 I mean people who had jobs are now homeless. 00:05:30.21\00:05:33.55 And, now in the inner cities, we're not talking about 00:05:33.58\00:05:35.87 like nationally 9 and 10% unemployment. 00:05:35.90\00:05:38.78 We're talking about 14 to 16% unemployment. 00:05:38.81\00:05:42.11 So these people are coming for groceries 00:05:42.14\00:05:44.29 every week to be fed 00:05:44.32\00:05:46.27 to be able to take care of their families. 00:05:46.30\00:05:48.29 I want you to think about a church 00:05:48.32\00:05:50.50 and how big our church-- 00:05:50.53\00:05:51.56 our church is a 4,000 member church, 00:05:51.59\00:05:53.59 Atlanta Berean Seventh-day Adventist church. 00:05:53.62\00:05:55.76 And we had lines. 00:05:55.79\00:05:57.29 People would lineup from in the morning 00:05:57.32\00:05:59.55 and lineup all around the building. 00:05:59.58\00:06:02.72 There will be people with families 00:06:02.75\00:06:04.47 with children in their hands, 00:06:04.50\00:06:06.02 with baby carriages waiting to get some food. 00:06:06.05\00:06:10.06 Wow, well you know Debbie 00:06:10.09\00:06:11.73 I know--I've worked with you in ASI 00:06:11.76\00:06:14.21 in Southern Union before. 00:06:14.24\00:06:15.32 I know you've a real burden for the health message 00:06:15.35\00:06:17.79 and you had the health expo panels. 00:06:17.82\00:06:20.81 How have you been able to take the food program and expand it 00:06:20.84\00:06:25.76 to make it a health evangelism program as well? 00:06:25.79\00:06:28.78 Well, as we saw this week after week, 00:06:28.81\00:06:31.15 I had a burden in my heart 00:06:31.18\00:06:32.61 that these people are coming to our church. 00:06:32.64\00:06:34.94 These families many of them don't know 00:06:34.97\00:06:37.20 who we are or that we even have a health message, 00:06:37.23\00:06:39.91 who the Adventist church is. 00:06:39.94\00:06:41.09 They were just coming to meet their needs. 00:06:41.12\00:06:43.75 And we start of how can we do that 00:06:43.78\00:06:46.37 by bringing our health ministry into it. 00:06:46.40\00:06:48.76 Now the problem was the building 00:06:48.79\00:06:51.55 was completely taken over with food. 00:06:51.58\00:06:53.53 There is not an ounce of space anywhere. 00:06:53.56\00:06:56.14 They said Dr. Wallace, 00:06:56.17\00:06:57.55 "We don't have any space for you inside." 00:06:57.58\00:06:59.99 And that Lord impressed me to say you know what? 00:07:00.02\00:07:02.53 "I don't need to be inside. I'll take a tent outside." 00:07:02.56\00:07:06.41 And we erected a tent outside 00:07:06.44\00:07:07.95 and we started to do health screenings outside 00:07:07.98\00:07:11.01 in the hot weather. 00:07:11.04\00:07:12.07 These people are feeling the heat out there 00:07:12.10\00:07:15.25 even without being on to the tent. 00:07:15.28\00:07:17.57 It was actually a welcoming thing to them-- 00:07:17.60\00:07:20.38 for them to come and sit down for a minute 00:07:20.41\00:07:22.57 and get under a tent sometimes. 00:07:22.60\00:07:24.55 And we found people with very, very dire health problems. 00:07:24.58\00:07:29.18 People, people young people 00:07:29.21\00:07:30.55 with skyrocketing high blood pressure 00:07:30.58\00:07:32.68 and bad and very high blood glucose levels and so on, 00:07:32.71\00:07:37.54 that we were able to then start to talk about. 00:07:37.57\00:07:39.94 You know, we can help you 00:07:39.97\00:07:41.99 if you would like to become a part of us, 00:07:42.02\00:07:44.53 our ministry you can come and join our free class 00:07:44.56\00:07:47.42 and if nothing else we'll give you a free meal. 00:07:47.45\00:07:50.38 We'll feed you some food. 00:07:50.41\00:07:52.55 They didn't know it was going to be vegan food 00:07:52.58\00:07:55.01 but they all came. 00:07:55.04\00:07:56.56 And then they tasted it and they said, "Wow, 00:07:56.59\00:07:59.07 I never tasted anything like this before." 00:07:59.10\00:08:01.16 You're telling me there is no meat in this. 00:08:01.19\00:08:03.30 And we explained and then we go into our classes 00:08:03.33\00:08:05.72 and teach them the Ten Health Laws. 00:08:05.75\00:08:07.71 And as a result of that, 00:08:07.74\00:08:09.21 people are actually changing and understanding-- 00:08:09.24\00:08:12.16 they didn't even know some of these folks where just 00:08:12.19\00:08:14.53 actually let them sample with soymilk taste like. 00:08:14.56\00:08:17.60 They had no idea that there were other alternatives to dairy. 00:08:17.63\00:08:21.08 So it's just been a wonderful ministry. 00:08:21.11\00:08:23.44 You know, I'm always surprised in a ministry 00:08:23.47\00:08:25.41 how God surprises us from time to time 00:08:25.44\00:08:27.86 and just opens a door with someone 00:08:27.89\00:08:29.64 we would normally have never met. 00:08:29.67\00:08:32.13 Did the radio ever help you find some contacts? 00:08:32.16\00:08:34.97 Yeah, so we advertised 00:08:35.00\00:08:37.59 our health expo on Praise 102.5 FM 00:08:37.62\00:08:41.03 and a lady was actually coming on our way 00:08:41.06\00:08:44.92 she said to a jazz festival. 00:08:44.95\00:08:46.99 And then the jazz festival got canceled 00:08:47.02\00:08:50.00 and then she heard our advertisement. 00:08:50.03\00:08:52.16 So she turned her car around and came to our church. 00:08:52.19\00:08:55.10 It was her first time 00:08:55.13\00:08:56.17 she had stepped forth into a Seventh-day Adventist church. 00:08:56.20\00:08:58.76 She had no idea what she was in for. 00:08:58.79\00:09:01.07 But as a result of coming to our church, 00:09:01.10\00:09:03.28 she joined our program and she had diabetes problems 00:09:03.31\00:09:07.09 since she wasn't overweight or anything. 00:09:07.12\00:09:09.16 But her doctor just couldn't get her diabetes under control. 00:09:09.19\00:09:12.62 And as a result of following our healthy lifestyle practices, 00:09:12.65\00:09:16.09 she is now got in control of her diabetes 00:09:16.12\00:09:18.30 and she is now visiting our church. Amen. 00:09:18.33\00:09:21.35 Debbie, this kind of a program 00:09:21.38\00:09:23.44 and with the emphasis of our church 00:09:23.47\00:09:24.99 needing to work for cities, 00:09:25.02\00:09:26.06 can other people copy what you've done. 00:09:26.09\00:09:28.18 Is it that-- is it simple to them? 00:09:28.21\00:09:29.65 Yes, yes this is something I feel a burden to express 00:09:29.68\00:09:33.66 having been in the health ministry of our church 00:09:33.69\00:09:36.03 and I know that sometimes we have these programs 00:09:36.06\00:09:38.81 and we try to reach the community 00:09:38.84\00:09:40.30 and we sometimes fall short 00:09:40.33\00:09:42.11 and we get disappointed sometimes 00:09:42.14\00:09:43.85 when only a handful of people come out. 00:09:43.88\00:09:45.84 But we have a lot of our churches 00:09:45.87\00:09:47.69 are actually doing food distributions. 00:09:47.72\00:09:50.02 Maybe not on the large scale that our church is but-- 00:09:50.05\00:09:52.82 we have those kinds of availability 00:09:52.85\00:09:55.24 to do these ministries. 00:09:55.27\00:09:56.37 And we-- what we don't do is 00:09:56.40\00:09:57.88 we don't sometimes couple these ministries. 00:09:57.91\00:10:00.00 Like we were so happy that we found a way 00:10:00.03\00:10:02.54 to be able to be a part of the food distribution. 00:10:02.57\00:10:05.27 And I think that is something that I want people to think of. 00:10:05.30\00:10:08.04 How can we work together with the other ministries 00:10:08.07\00:10:11.02 that we have in our church 00:10:11.05\00:10:12.10 to get our health message out there? 00:10:12.13\00:10:14.14 Okay, so it's wonderful to feed people 00:10:14.17\00:10:16.80 but we want to go further 00:10:16.83\00:10:18.81 and the health approach getting to screen them, 00:10:18.84\00:10:21.37 helping them with their total lifestyle. 00:10:21.40\00:10:23.66 Helps us also get to their spiritual heart, doesn't it? 00:10:23.69\00:10:26.09 That is, that is the goal 00:10:26.12\00:10:27.57 because we want to fit them for the kingdom. 00:10:27.60\00:10:30.18 Ah, what about families? 00:10:30.21\00:10:33.51 I mean a lot of--you think of individuals to be homeless 00:10:33.54\00:10:36.85 or whatever but now today even families-- 00:10:36.88\00:10:40.06 lot of the people you minister to I think include children. 00:10:40.09\00:10:42.88 Yes, our ministry actually, we got funded to do 00:10:42.91\00:10:46.81 a child with obesity prevention program 00:10:46.84\00:10:49.41 and as a result of this program, 00:10:49.44\00:10:50.81 we have been to reach out to people 00:10:50.84\00:10:52.86 and bring them in as families to learn our healthy lifestyle. 00:10:52.89\00:10:56.93 We have one particular young man, 00:10:56.96\00:10:59.67 his mother brought him to the class 00:10:59.70\00:11:01.51 because he was very overweight, obese you might say. 00:11:01.54\00:11:04.59 And he was having struggles and his mom says, 00:11:04.62\00:11:07.45 "I just can't feed him enough. 00:11:07.48\00:11:08.91 He just keeps eating, eating, eating. 00:11:08.94\00:11:11.04 And I said, "You know what, 00:11:11.07\00:11:12.10 maybe it's what you are feeding him." 00:11:12.13\00:11:13.88 It's not necessarily that, 00:11:13.91\00:11:15.63 you know, we have very large appetite. 00:11:15.66\00:11:17.13 Sometimes what we are feeding our children in not filling. 00:11:17.16\00:11:20.16 And so as we brought her 00:11:20.19\00:11:21.22 through the program that helped her. 00:11:21.25\00:11:22.70 She actually is now just so happy that he is gone, 00:11:22.73\00:11:25.72 his weight under control and he is eating better 00:11:25.75\00:11:28.35 and they're just one happy family now. 00:11:28.38\00:11:30.14 Thank you, Debbie. 00:11:30.17\00:11:31.26 And if to contact your ministry, 00:11:31.29\00:11:32.87 you can go on the website and its hipcare.org. 00:11:32.90\00:11:36.11 Hipcare.org, 00:11:36.14\00:11:40.24 we also try to allow our ministry 00:11:40.27\00:11:42.34 to go out to other churches through video conferencing 00:11:42.37\00:11:45.82 and also if your church has a need 00:11:45.85\00:11:48.57 and don't maybe have the expertise 00:11:48.60\00:11:50.36 and so on, we have that. 00:11:50.39\00:11:51.83 The healthy life core has a volunteer 00:11:51.86\00:11:53.90 base of hundreds of people 00:11:53.93\00:11:55.51 that we want to make you a part of it. 00:11:55.54\00:11:57.73 We would love for you to join us. 00:11:57.76\00:11:59.59 And for you to provide us 00:11:59.62\00:12:01.16 with assistance in whatever way to make our ministry go out 00:12:01.19\00:12:04.17 and to meet the needs of our community. 00:12:04.20\00:12:06.22 Thank you, Debbie, for what you're doing 00:12:06.25\00:12:07.38 in Atlanta, Georgia. 00:12:07.41\00:12:08.54 God bless you. Yes, I'm just only 85. 00:21:48.60\00:21:53.99 Now what do you call your team. 00:21:54.02\00:21:56.53 I mean when they do-- 00:21:56.56\00:21:57.68 you know you're not health counselors, 00:21:57.71\00:21:59.38 you're health-- We're health coachers. 00:21:59.41\00:22:01.53 That's a good term, isn't it? 00:22:01.56\00:22:02.74 Yeah, that's the buzz word today 00:22:02.77\00:22:04.76 and we have to keep up with the times. 00:22:04.79\00:22:07.22 So there was 22 of us, professional nursing 00:22:07.25\00:22:12.83 and so forth that took the health, 00:22:12.86\00:22:14.91 took the coaching from a university there in Portland. 00:22:14.94\00:22:18.56 They were Baptist ministers 00:22:18.59\00:22:19.76 that taught us how to do coaching. 00:22:19.79\00:22:22.45 Of course, we already knew the health 00:22:22.48\00:22:24.33 and so we can call our program you know health coachers. 00:22:24.36\00:22:28.92 And the important thing is the follow up of course 00:22:28.95\00:22:32.25 where we can talk to them about God's love. 00:22:32.28\00:22:35.02 And so the very first screening I see in 20 people 00:22:35.05\00:22:40.39 that I had signed up for follow up. 00:22:40.42\00:22:42.66 Can I have backup on that? 00:22:42.69\00:22:44.56 I think you told me that in the store that day 00:22:44.59\00:22:47.00 Fred Meyer is kind of like Wal-Mart or better. 00:22:47.03\00:22:49.39 It's a big store. 00:22:49.42\00:22:50.45 Yeah, it's a--like a big Macy's with the big supermarket. Okay. 00:22:50.48\00:22:53.82 2000 employees in one store. 00:22:53.85\00:22:55.92 You had about a 100 00:22:55.95\00:22:57.15 and some people come through the screening program. 00:22:57.18\00:22:59.73 Yeah, 150. 00:22:59.76\00:23:01.01 And out of 150 you signed up for some health coaching. 00:23:01.04\00:23:04.67 How many? 20. 00:23:04.70\00:23:05.88 20 people and you offered them to-- 00:23:05.91\00:23:09.06 how would you follow up with them? 00:23:09.09\00:23:10.73 Well, I could either, we could either go in their home 00:23:10.76\00:23:13.28 another nurse and I did it. 00:23:13.31\00:23:15.22 I worked the morning shift, we worked two four hour shifts. 00:23:15.25\00:23:17.99 Because we worked in one day a month eight hours a day, 00:23:18.02\00:23:22.43 and I worked the morning shift. 00:23:22.46\00:23:23.53 She worked afternoon shift 00:23:23.56\00:23:25.34 and we signed up people to follow up on them. 00:23:25.37\00:23:29.49 And so that we could talk to them about their heath 00:23:29.52\00:23:32.44 and then go into talking to them about God's love. 00:23:32.47\00:23:35.31 Isn't that wonderful. 00:23:35.34\00:23:36.37 So you either go to their homes, house calls, 00:23:36.40\00:23:38.88 or they come to the wellness center 00:23:38.91\00:23:40.44 which is the church. 00:23:40.47\00:23:41.50 Our churches have to be wellness centers 00:23:41.53\00:23:43.56 because Fred Meyers does not allow 00:23:43.59\00:23:46.32 and no corporate store allows church programs. 00:23:46.35\00:23:49.60 You have to be a health program. 00:23:49.63\00:23:52.06 So that's why we went in as a Healthy Heart Team. 00:23:52.09\00:23:55.11 And Lionel Zello who is the corporate 00:23:55.14\00:23:58.47 in charge of all the pharmacies 00:23:58.50\00:24:00.44 for the western division of crockery stores 00:24:00.47\00:24:02.64 which is Fred Meyer's in four states 00:24:02.67\00:24:06.05 in the North Pacific Union where we were at. 00:24:06.08\00:24:08.61 And he loves this program and he wants it in every store 00:24:08.64\00:24:12.07 and he has got 200 stores. Oh my. 00:24:12.10\00:24:15.65 We have 24 churches involved in this program now. 00:24:15.68\00:24:18.60 You had to get some more, young people involved don't you? 00:24:18.63\00:24:21.02 Well, they are, they are doing a great job and they see, 00:24:21.05\00:24:25.44 we average 2,000 people a month that we screen. 00:24:25.47\00:24:28.92 And then they are doing a lot of cooking classes 00:24:28.95\00:24:31.21 and stress seminars and things like that, you know. 00:24:31.24\00:24:35.63 I like your program. 00:24:35.66\00:24:36.93 You know, we do a lot of screening programs 00:24:36.96\00:24:39.32 but really the screening programs 00:24:39.35\00:24:40.60 are typically to launch into something. 00:24:40.63\00:24:43.14 And some people never quite get launched 00:24:43.17\00:24:44.92 but I like that you're able to very quickly transition. 00:24:44.95\00:24:48.50 You're really making an appointment with them 00:24:48.53\00:24:50.00 if they're willing to come at their home, 00:24:50.03\00:24:52.54 or to have them come to your wellness center 00:24:52.57\00:24:54.44 and then you go into a health programs 00:24:54.47\00:24:56.61 and you are watching for the spiritual interest. 00:24:56.64\00:24:59.12 A 50% of the people we see have high blood pressure 00:24:59.15\00:25:02.61 and I'm saying like 200 over 110. 00:25:02.64\00:25:05.52 From our database all the people that are-- 00:25:05.55\00:25:07.91 Most of people we see are in their 30-40s and 50s. 00:25:07.94\00:25:11.66 And they're just shocked that they have high blood pressure 00:25:11.69\00:25:14.59 and some of them don't have any idea 00:25:14.62\00:25:16.28 that they have high blood pressure. 00:25:16.31\00:25:17.54 So we're saving people from strokes 00:25:17.57\00:25:19.77 and heart attacks every single day. 00:25:19.80\00:25:21.92 And preparing them for eternity. 00:25:21.95\00:25:23.33 Am I out of minutes? We are out of minutes. 00:25:23.36\00:25:26.67 But we're going to tell them how to get a hold of you 00:25:26.70\00:25:28.19 because if you ever get to meet Molly, 00:25:28.22\00:25:30.01 you're going to want more of her 00:25:30.04\00:25:31.69 and you can follow up with Molly at healthyheartteam.net. 00:25:31.72\00:25:38.88 Thank you, Molly, God bless you. 00:25:38.91\00:25:40.64 Thank you everybody. 00:25:40.67\00:25:42.28 We are glad to have you here. Thank you. 00:25:42.31\00:25:47.72 Now we're going back to the south. 00:25:47.75\00:25:49.80 We're going to go to Columbus, Georgia. 00:25:49.83\00:25:53.20 You know in this segment 00:25:53.23\00:25:55.23 and we're so happy to have with us, 00:25:55.26\00:25:57.03 Valentina Dragomir and Calvin Thrash 00:25:57.06\00:25:59.70 who is the president of Uchee Pines Institute. 00:25:59.73\00:26:02.03 Uchee Pines Institute operates in the outpost in Seale, Alabama 00:26:02.06\00:26:06.69 but across the river is Columbus, Georgia, 00:26:06.72\00:26:09.28 their city mission territory, right. 00:26:09.31\00:26:12.20 And we're so happy that you're here today. 00:26:12.23\00:26:14.63 And tell us a little bit about 00:26:14.66\00:26:16.00 Uchee Pines urban aspect of your outreach. 00:26:16.03\00:26:20.33 And Valentina tell us little bit about-- 00:26:20.36\00:26:25.88 you have the restaurant. 00:26:25.91\00:26:26.94 In fact the restaurant it goes clear back to the early 70s, 00:26:26.97\00:26:30.32 doesn't it mid-70s. 00:26:30.35\00:26:31.72 So they've been doing restaurant ministry 00:26:31.75\00:26:33.69 in health food store for many, many years, 00:26:33.72\00:26:35.64 haven't you? That's correct. 00:26:35.67\00:26:36.87 But what are some of the unique things 00:26:36.90\00:26:38.41 that you've found make that ministry more effective 00:26:38.44\00:26:42.06 to not just feed people but get a little closer to them. 00:26:42.09\00:26:44.81 Give us an example. 00:26:44.84\00:26:46.14 Okay, I believe you're referring to the programs 00:26:46.17\00:26:49.64 that's we're doing at Country Life Yes. 00:26:49.67\00:26:51.85 And specifically that includes cooking classes 00:26:51.88\00:26:54.85 that's our students put up 00:26:54.88\00:26:57.26 for the customers at Country Life. 00:26:57.29\00:27:00.16 As well as a new program that we have developed 00:27:00.19\00:27:03.43 'Dinner with a Doctor.' Dinner with a doctor. 00:27:03.46\00:27:06.24 That's sounds interesting, tell us about that one? 00:27:06.27\00:27:08.22 Yes, it is interesting 00:27:08.25\00:27:10.38 and the way it started is also very interesting. 00:27:10.41\00:27:15.47 Some of our church members from Uchee Pines 00:27:15.50\00:27:19.06 visited the neighborhood. 00:27:19.09\00:27:20.44 And every time they went to a store, 00:27:20.47\00:27:23.13 they would talk to the people and tell them about this DVD, 00:27:23.16\00:27:28.51 'Folks over Knives.' 00:27:28.54\00:27:30.26 And they would lend it out 00:27:30.29\00:27:31.99 and visit them again to see what they think about it. 00:27:32.02\00:27:37.12 Then they would invite them to a 'Dinner with a Doctor.' 00:27:37.15\00:27:40.44 What this is, one of the physicians 00:27:40.47\00:27:43.41 from Uchee Pines would have 00:27:43.44\00:27:45.16 a health lecture at Country Life. 00:27:45.19\00:27:50.64 The guest would come and have dinner, 00:27:50.67\00:27:52.92 listen to the lecture, ask the questions they have 00:27:52.95\00:27:57.92 and just build bridges and make friends. 00:27:57.95\00:28:01.96 How did it work? How many people that you get-- 00:28:01.99\00:28:04.66 do they signup at a time, so you know they're coming 00:28:04.69\00:28:07.36 and about how many came? 00:28:07.39\00:28:08.60 Yes, they do signup ahead of time. 00:28:08.63\00:28:12.11 Actually the idea was born a couple of months ago. 00:28:12.14\00:28:16.15 But we only had the first meeting last month. 00:28:16.18\00:28:19.66 Our second one-- 00:28:19.69\00:28:21.10 Will be tomorrow. Coming up tomorrow. 00:28:21.13\00:28:22.92 Tomorrow. Yes. 00:28:22.95\00:28:23.98 Ah, we did have 24 the first time. Really. 00:28:24.01\00:28:27.06 And I understand that's we have 30 signed up for our second. 00:28:27.09\00:28:30.68 Thirty have signed up to come tomorrow. 00:28:30.71\00:28:32.15 What do you say folks? 00:28:32.18\00:28:33.44 Amen. Isn't that wonderful. 00:28:33.47\00:28:35.07 So sit down and have a dinner with a doctor 00:28:35.10\00:28:37.70 and be able to ask the questions you've always wanted to ask. 00:28:37.73\00:28:40.58 That's right. Very good. 00:28:40.61\00:28:41.78 Tell us about your cooking schools. 00:28:41.81\00:28:43.54 Is that at the restaurant also? 00:28:43.57\00:28:45.19 Those are at the restaurant as well. 00:28:45.22\00:28:47.69 Usually, the restaurant is closed Sabbath and Sunday 00:28:47.72\00:28:53.67 but the health food store is open Sunday. 00:28:53.70\00:28:56.04 And the kitchen is available on Sunday 00:28:56.07\00:28:58.28 for us to do cooking classes. 00:28:58.31\00:29:00.36 And so we advertise through the store 00:29:00.39\00:29:04.73 and the last class actually we only advertised 00:29:04.76\00:29:09.06 for five days I believe. 00:29:09.09\00:29:10.86 We had the flier out for the five days. 00:29:10.89\00:29:13.91 And we had 28 registered. 00:29:13.94\00:29:17.14 One couple actually just walked into the store that day 00:29:17.17\00:29:20.10 and they found out about the cooking school 00:29:20.13\00:29:22.06 so they stayed on. 00:29:22.09\00:29:24.40 Our students from Uchee Pines 00:29:24.43\00:29:27.06 learned in their nutrition classes 00:29:27.09\00:29:28.91 how to conduct a cooking school. 00:29:28.94\00:29:31.13 How to organize and conduct the cooking school. 00:29:31.16\00:29:33.45 So they actually prepared the food, they serve it, 00:29:33.48\00:29:36.87 they do the cooking demos 00:29:36.90\00:29:38.40 and present the health lectures. 00:29:38.43\00:29:40.16 So they get some good hands on experience right there. 00:29:40.19\00:29:42.16 Good hands on experience as well. Very good. 00:29:42.19\00:29:44.33 Well Calvin can you tell us 00:29:44.36\00:29:45.47 another aspect of Uchee Pines urban outreach. 00:29:45.50\00:29:48.16 What are you doing in this city? 00:29:48.19\00:29:50.35 We are taking a kind of a unique approach 00:29:50.38\00:29:53.34 to a very old way of doing things 00:29:53.37\00:29:55.82 and that's the canvassing work. 00:29:55.85\00:29:57.06 The canvassing work is a door to door type work. 00:29:57.09\00:30:00.92 We have taken that little statement 00:30:00.95\00:30:03.71 that Sister White made about 00:30:03.74\00:30:05.15 how she had seen thousands of people 00:30:05.18\00:30:06.93 going door to door 00:30:06.96\00:30:08.50 and sharing simple health services 00:30:08.53\00:30:11.46 with the community at no charge. 00:30:11.49\00:30:13.37 The problem is actually getting through the barrier 00:30:13.40\00:30:17.12 that usually people have there at the door. 00:30:17.15\00:30:19.76 You knock on the door 00:30:19.79\00:30:20.82 and usually people don't really want to talk to you, 00:30:20.85\00:30:22.75 so we're using a little technological edge 00:30:22.78\00:30:24.81 called health at your door. It's very simple thing. 00:30:24.84\00:30:27.41 We offer a DVD initially and we say hello. 00:30:27.44\00:30:31.35 I'm Calvin Thrash and this is my associate Valentina Dragomir. 00:30:31.38\00:30:34.76 We're here in your area doing 00:30:34.79\00:30:36.15 personalized health services in this community 00:30:36.18\00:30:38.85 and we like to leave you this DVD 00:30:38.88\00:30:40.69 that explains what we're doing 00:30:40.72\00:30:42.06 and we'll back next week to talk to you a little bit more 00:30:42.09\00:30:44.81 about what it is that we can do. 00:30:44.84\00:30:45.98 Health at your door. 00:30:46.01\00:30:47.04 Health at your door, there's a website 00:30:47.07\00:30:48.78 that is actually associated with that people can log on, 00:30:48.81\00:30:52.00 make appointments. 00:30:52.03\00:30:53.15 They can have cooking schools, 00:30:53.18\00:30:55.46 cooking, health demonstrations 00:30:55.49\00:30:57.29 of various types right there in their home. 00:30:57.32\00:30:59.98 And in simple like a chair massage 00:31:00.01\00:31:03.15 or simple treatments that we can do easily. 00:31:03.18\00:31:06.38 And it has been so far a smashing success 00:31:06.41\00:31:09.57 although I will say that we've only been using 00:31:09.60\00:31:11.11 this approach for about six months. 00:31:11.14\00:31:13.06 And from that we have got about a dozen 00:31:13.09\00:31:15.52 Bible studies actually. Bible studies. 00:31:15.55\00:31:17.34 With people going past the barrier, 00:31:17.37\00:31:20.01 we used the Amazing Health Facts presentation 00:31:20.04\00:31:24.12 that segues into the Amazing Facts Bible studies 00:31:24.15\00:31:27.83 and it's been a very effective tool 00:31:27.86\00:31:29.82 in working with people in our area 00:31:29.85\00:31:31.68 right around the Country Life area. 00:31:31.71\00:31:34.69 Well, thank you so much for sharing that. 00:31:34.72\00:31:36.85 It's been our privilege 00:31:36.88\00:31:37.91 just to give you a little snapshot this afternoon 00:31:37.94\00:31:40.55 of several of our urban ministries Atlanta, 00:31:40.58\00:31:42.89 Georgia and Portland, Oregon, Denver, Colorado 00:31:42.92\00:31:46.28 and back down to Columbus, Georgia. 00:31:46.31\00:31:49.24 May your tribe increase 00:31:49.27\00:31:50.44 and may our effectiveness in city evangelism 00:31:50.47\00:31:52.97 get better and better and hasten the coming of Jesus. 00:31:53.00\00:31:56.13 Thank you so much. 00:37:06.18\00:37:07.87 Well, you know, I have always done 00:37:07.90\00:37:09.58 some sort of ministry in my office 00:37:09.61\00:37:12.23 but at this point in time there was 00:37:12.26\00:37:14.08 so much need in Detroit with such devastation 00:37:14.11\00:37:18.02 and we know we had to do something. 00:37:18.05\00:37:21.63 So God was drawing us to do something for these people 00:37:21.66\00:37:25.26 and we just felt a need to step out 00:37:25.29\00:37:29.93 and lift Jesus Christ up. 00:37:29.96\00:37:33.22 Now what are some of the programs 00:37:33.25\00:37:34.64 that you have been running from your office? 00:37:34.67\00:37:38.24 We have a Thursday night, 00:37:38.27\00:37:40.25 Bible study group that meets every single Thursday night. 00:37:40.28\00:37:43.81 We have a food fellowship first 00:37:43.84\00:37:46.18 and the people love to come to that. 00:37:46.21\00:37:47.81 And then we do a little health nugget 00:37:47.84\00:37:50.42 and then we go into some serious Bible studies. 00:37:50.45\00:37:52.01 We have about anywhere from 15 to 30 people 00:37:52.04\00:37:54.81 coming out every Thursday night. 00:37:54.84\00:37:57.17 And on Mondays we also have another 00:37:57.20\00:37:59.29 more intensive nutritional study 00:37:59.32\00:38:01.56 in the mornings and in the evenings. 00:38:01.59\00:38:03.84 Now, this may be a hard question 00:38:03.87\00:38:06.38 but I think it's a really important one. 00:38:06.41\00:38:08.48 You are helping in a way to meet people's 00:38:08.51\00:38:11.34 physical needs as a dentist 00:38:11.37\00:38:13.52 but you're also trying to meet their spiritual needs. 00:38:13.55\00:38:15.32 How are you helping people bridge the gap 00:38:15.35\00:38:17.54 in their understanding between leading from physical healing 00:38:17.57\00:38:21.52 to spiritual hope? 00:38:21.55\00:38:23.97 Well, you know, pray is the central focus 00:38:24.00\00:38:28.58 for everything and as we pray with our patience. 00:38:28.61\00:38:33.83 And they see the miracles taking place, 00:38:33.86\00:38:36.14 the healing taking place it brings them such hope 00:38:36.17\00:38:39.66 because they're so devastated. 00:38:39.69\00:38:41.59 And as a matter of fact we have a dentist 00:38:41.62\00:38:44.33 down the street who sends his sick patients 00:38:44.36\00:38:48.23 down to our office when they have medical problems 00:38:48.26\00:38:51.06 because he knows that miracles happen there. 00:38:51.09\00:38:53.12 And we have known as a center for health healing 00:38:53.15\00:38:55.29 and hope in the sense. 00:38:55.32\00:38:57.82 Now I know there are probably a number of dentists 00:38:57.85\00:39:00.53 or medical professionals here 00:39:00.56\00:39:02.28 who have their own practices or work with the group 00:39:02.31\00:39:04.67 and may be you have wondered 00:39:04.70\00:39:06.38 how do you start something like this. 00:39:06.41\00:39:08.41 Now you had a whole team. 00:39:08.44\00:39:09.93 How many people are you working with 00:39:09.96\00:39:11.44 here on this ministry? 00:39:11.47\00:39:12.69 Well, we have several. 00:39:12.72\00:39:15.25 I'm a members of the Amen Organization. 00:39:15.28\00:39:17.68 And we have several Amen doctors 00:39:17.71\00:39:19.91 who come in and helped us from time to time. 00:39:19.94\00:39:22.52 We have couple of lay pastors, 00:39:22.55\00:39:24.18 we have couple nutritionist 00:39:24.21\00:39:26.53 who come by and help us from week to week. 00:39:26.56\00:39:29.04 And God is really helping us and blessing us. 00:39:29.07\00:39:32.02 And people are responding to not only the health message 00:39:32.05\00:39:35.51 but also to the Bible studies and the prophecy. 00:39:35.54\00:39:37.88 So then how does somebody 00:39:37.91\00:39:39.32 who is working at this point on their own 00:39:39.35\00:39:41.66 begins something like this. 00:39:41.69\00:39:43.23 Where is the important part, 00:39:43.26\00:39:44.31 a way to start with you feel like 00:39:44.34\00:39:45.88 you're just the sole practitioner 00:39:45.91\00:39:47.67 and, you know, you don't have a team 00:39:47.70\00:39:49.92 of people who work with yet. 00:39:49.95\00:39:51.03 What do you think it's the most important place to start? 00:39:51.06\00:39:53.82 Well, first of all, you start with prayer. 00:39:53.85\00:39:55.83 First of all, ask God to bless. 00:39:55.86\00:39:57.78 Because when you lift Jesus Christ up 00:39:57.81\00:39:59.59 others are drawn to him. 00:39:59.62\00:40:01.01 So we started off first by 00:40:01.04\00:40:02.21 just leaving literature in the office, 00:40:02.24\00:40:04.27 in the offertories, you know health, 00:40:04.30\00:40:06.27 we have so much resources now 00:40:06.30\00:40:08.11 for health magazines, health tracts. 00:40:08.14\00:40:10.80 And we just leave them around the office 00:40:10.83\00:40:12.49 and people pick them up and ask questions. 00:40:12.52\00:40:14.56 And one thing with us as dentist, 00:40:14.59\00:40:16.43 we have a very captive audience. 00:40:16.46\00:40:18.55 So I can give a whole Bible study 00:40:18.58\00:40:20.01 while I'm doing root canal. 00:40:20.04\00:40:22.00 And it really helps and people are-- 00:40:22.03\00:40:24.59 That's got to be better than anesthesia. 00:40:24.62\00:40:26.30 Is there anything else that you would like 00:40:30.36\00:40:31.65 to share here with other people 00:40:31.68\00:40:33.21 who might want to start something like this, 00:40:33.24\00:40:35.04 just encourage them to know that there is 00:40:35.07\00:40:36.74 something that they can do as well? 00:40:36.77\00:40:37.94 Well, just team up with your local church 00:40:37.97\00:40:40.11 and with the local elders 00:40:40.14\00:40:41.52 and people like Bible workers and God will bless. 00:40:41.55\00:40:44.65 Wonderful, thank you so much for being with us. 00:40:44.68\00:40:46.04 Thank you. 00:40:46.07\00:40:48.13 I have somebody else to introduce to you today, 00:40:48.16\00:40:50.29 his name is Justin Coleman. 00:40:50.32\00:40:51.58 If any of you, in fact raise your hands 00:40:51.61\00:40:53.09 if you've ever attended a GYC Convention or Conference. 00:40:53.12\00:40:56.56 Well, then you might know who he is. 00:40:56.59\00:40:58.14 He is always involved up there. 00:40:58.17\00:40:59.47 We have seen him up on the stage. 00:40:59.50\00:41:01.41 But he is also works in the capacity 00:41:01.44\00:41:03.30 as a Director of Campus, 00:41:03.33\00:41:05.37 a ministry for Adventist students 00:41:05.40\00:41:06.96 attending secular universities. 00:41:06.99\00:41:09.05 And that is based in Lansing and Harbor Michigan. 00:41:09.08\00:41:12.47 Ah, I want to know to-- 00:41:12.50\00:41:13.99 share with the people here what exactly is Campus. 00:41:14.02\00:41:16.15 What are those letters stand for? 00:41:16.18\00:41:17.34 Yeah, hey, everyone, CAMPUS is an organization 00:41:17.37\00:41:20.29 where we reach out to weird people. 00:41:20.32\00:41:22.23 One of the weirdest people out there 00:41:22.26\00:41:23.76 are students on public universities. 00:41:23.79\00:41:26.44 These students are really, really weird. 00:41:26.47\00:41:28.73 Amen, everybody. 00:41:28.76\00:41:29.79 Now you're talking about Adventist students. 00:41:29.82\00:41:31.99 Ah, these are some of them are Adventist. 00:41:32.02\00:41:34.25 We are trying to retain 00:41:34.28\00:41:36.66 80% of the Adventist young people 00:41:36.69\00:41:39.05 attending public university. 00:41:39.08\00:41:40.75 So the first call is to retain that 80% 00:41:40.78\00:41:42.82 and to help them stay in Adventist 00:41:42.85\00:41:44.91 and then get them to appoint 00:41:44.94\00:41:46.01 where they're reaching out to other non Adventists 00:41:46.04\00:41:48.39 and then propagating the faith on universities. 00:41:48.42\00:41:50.65 So how did this ministry come about 00:41:50.68\00:41:52.52 and how did your personal involvement? 00:41:52.55\00:41:54.04 Yeah, our organization started in 1999. 00:41:54.07\00:41:57.09 It was initiated by the Michigan Conference. 00:41:57.12\00:41:59.06 They saw that a lot of our young people 00:41:59.09\00:42:01.08 are leaving through the backdoor. 00:42:01.11\00:42:03.36 Some young people are deliberately 00:42:03.39\00:42:05.24 going to public universities to get lost, simply as it is. 00:42:05.27\00:42:09.01 Or other students are-- 00:42:09.04\00:42:10.54 they don't have the fortunate opportunity 00:42:10.57\00:42:12.11 to go to an Adventist education. 00:42:12.14\00:42:14.45 So they go and they're looking for places to get lost. 00:42:14.48\00:42:19.33 Well, what we're trying to do in the Michigan Conference 00:42:19.36\00:42:21.34 took the first initiative in 1999 00:42:21.37\00:42:23.62 to set up a department and organization 00:42:23.65\00:42:25.77 that finds ways to retain Adventist students 00:42:25.80\00:42:28.53 and they're getting them to be 00:42:28.56\00:42:29.59 faithful committers of the Adventist. 00:42:29.62\00:42:31.15 You know, now you're based in Lansing, Ann Arbor, 00:42:31.18\00:42:33.11 But you're reaching farther than that. 00:42:33.14\00:42:34.64 Tell me where are your biggest impact is right now? 00:42:34.67\00:42:37.57 Ah, we have the jurisdiction of the state of Michigan. 00:42:37.60\00:42:40.02 We have 12 universities 00:42:40.05\00:42:41.73 that have an Adventist CAMPUS presence. 00:42:41.76\00:42:44.85 We have some students, 00:42:44.88\00:42:46.13 some student groups about 50 people. 00:42:46.16\00:42:48.02 Some are just two but we still love them, 00:42:48.05\00:42:50.55 two people are just as important. 00:42:50.58\00:42:52.04 And what's great about CAMPUS ministry is this. 00:42:52.07\00:42:55.33 After four years they leave, 00:42:55.36\00:42:57.58 they either go to graduate school 00:42:57.61\00:42:58.76 or they go to somewhere else 00:42:58.79\00:42:59.97 and just from being faithful in Michigan. 00:43:00.00\00:43:03.15 We have impacted the cities of Boston, 00:43:03.18\00:43:04.94 Washington DC, California, San Francisco, Miami 00:43:04.97\00:43:08.50 and we have gone even international. 00:43:08.53\00:43:09.85 There are just students in Europe, 00:43:09.88\00:43:11.14 in Toronto, far away Canada, 00:43:11.17\00:43:13.46 Australia and Asia. 00:43:13.49\00:43:15.31 It's wonderful to be witnessing to the world 00:43:15.34\00:43:18.67 when these students are coming to your front door step. 00:43:18.70\00:43:20.40 Because the universities are located in cities primarily. 00:43:20.43\00:43:23.41 That's right, yeah. 00:43:23.44\00:43:24.80 Now I know you have some stories about 00:43:24.83\00:43:26.13 what CAMPUS has been accomplishing 00:43:26.16\00:43:27.65 and I wish we can hear all of them 00:43:27.68\00:43:29.17 but I'm going to give you the go button 00:43:29.20\00:43:31.52 and I'll tell you when to start. So get it as best as you can. 00:43:31.55\00:43:32.99 Yeah, there's so many weird people 00:43:33.02\00:43:34.74 that I just love to share you about. 00:43:34.77\00:43:36.59 The CAMPUS environment is where one student, 00:43:36.62\00:43:40.17 where we get them just to activate 00:43:40.20\00:43:41.43 and they are totally on fire for Jesus. 00:43:41.46\00:43:43.42 They go all out and they're reaching out 00:43:43.45\00:43:45.28 to their fellow students or roommates. 00:43:45.31\00:43:47.02 We have this one guy, he is so on fire, 00:43:47.05\00:43:49.52 he is sharing his faith to everyone in dormitory. 00:43:49.55\00:43:52.18 There is these Pentecostals who are coming 00:43:52.21\00:43:54.13 and now they're Seventh-day Adventist. 00:43:54.16\00:43:55.52 But they're so on fire 00:43:55.55\00:43:56.94 and we're talking to them about the gift of prophecy 00:43:56.97\00:43:58.53 and they love the fact 00:43:58.56\00:43:59.86 that we have the Spirit of Prophecy. 00:43:59.89\00:44:01.70 Not a weird point for them at all. 00:44:01.73\00:44:04.21 They love that there is a biblical prophet around. 00:44:04.24\00:44:07.23 These guys are going around in NFCA 00:44:07.26\00:44:09.11 and into Detroit area and they're reaching out. 00:44:09.14\00:44:11.01 We got a guy who is interested in spiritual things. 00:44:11.04\00:44:13.99 He was had a full scholarship to Eastern Michigan University. 00:44:14.02\00:44:17.29 He is a pure red Baptist. 00:44:17.32\00:44:20.56 Baptist pastors from all the way 00:44:20.59\00:44:23.08 to the first Baptist. I don't know who that is. 00:44:23.11\00:44:24.95 Anyway, and he is super Texan Baptist. 00:44:24.98\00:44:28.15 And he finally got convicted on a Sabbath. 00:44:28.18\00:44:30.30 And he is thinking what do I do. 00:44:30.33\00:44:31.56 I play football on Sabbath. What would I do? 00:44:31.59\00:44:33.54 He finally made a decision to follow the Lord 00:44:33.57\00:44:35.81 and keep the Sabbath 00:44:35.84\00:44:37.29 and he forfeited his entire scholarship 00:44:37.32\00:44:39.93 to become a Seventh-day Adventist. 00:44:39.96\00:44:41.78 And he was a future football star. 00:44:41.81\00:44:43.30 We have another girl, she was a hardcore feminist. 00:44:43.33\00:44:45.95 She is hardcore lesbian. 00:44:45.98\00:44:48.38 She was just a really angry weird person 00:44:48.41\00:44:51.45 and we're all weird, amen. We're all weird, I'm weird too. 00:44:51.48\00:44:54.57 Anyway she is weird too. 00:44:54.60\00:44:56.03 And we're reaching out to her 00:44:56.06\00:44:57.25 and she finally became interested 00:44:57.28\00:44:58.86 and she came to GYC. 00:44:58.89\00:45:00.43 And she saw I mean there was just 00:45:00.46\00:45:01.50 a bigger worldview picture out there. 00:45:01.53\00:45:03.93 And now she is a committed Seventh-day Adventist 00:45:03.96\00:45:05.51 and she is also doing CAMPUS ministry as well. 00:45:05.54\00:45:07.52 Now, Justin, have you always been an Adventist? 00:45:07.55\00:45:09.88 I kind of not know, not really. 00:45:09.91\00:45:14.58 I was an Adventist by name who ate pork and shrimp 00:45:14.61\00:45:18.10 and went to church on Saturday 00:45:18.13\00:45:19.62 but came back and did everything else 00:45:19.65\00:45:20.98 that everyone else did and is that an Adventist. 00:45:21.01\00:45:23.93 No, that's not an Adventist, right. No, no. 00:45:23.96\00:45:24.99 So where were you 00:45:25.02\00:45:26.55 when the Lord reached your heart? 00:45:26.58\00:45:27.89 Where were you going to school? 00:45:27.92\00:45:29.03 I went to a Roman Catholic high school. 00:45:29.06\00:45:32.14 And I went to a Jewish college. 00:45:32.17\00:45:34.71 And I'm not any of those denominations or were. 00:45:34.74\00:45:38.56 And while on campus there was a campus ministry. 00:45:38.59\00:45:41.01 A local church who invested in campus ministry. 00:45:41.04\00:45:43.53 And that was a first time where I realized 00:45:43.56\00:45:45.78 that the Adventist message 00:45:45.81\00:45:47.36 is not simply going to church on Saturday. 00:45:47.39\00:45:49.97 Not simply eating weird veggie meat. 00:45:50.00\00:45:52.63 There is something bigger to this. 00:45:52.66\00:45:55.23 A clear picture of the Lord Jesus Christ, 00:45:55.26\00:45:57.28 that just blew my mind. 00:45:57.31\00:45:59.61 And I wanted to share this with every young person that I met. 00:45:59.64\00:46:01.80 So this is very personal to you then. 00:46:01.83\00:46:03.04 This is very personal for me. 00:46:03.07\00:46:04.48 So what do you see happening now 00:46:04.51\00:46:05.93 in the coming months and years for CAMPUS? 00:46:05.96\00:46:07.62 What are some of the new things that you're planning to do? 00:46:07.65\00:46:10.24 We're hoping to get resources 00:46:10.27\00:46:11.64 where every Adventist young person 00:46:11.67\00:46:13.15 cannot only defend a Christian faith 00:46:13.18\00:46:14.84 but also the Adventist faith. 00:46:14.87\00:46:17.14 Also they can articulate the Adventist message 00:46:17.17\00:46:20.23 basically what is Jesus doing right now. 00:46:20.26\00:46:24.31 He is not a memorial figure, amen everybody. 00:46:24.34\00:46:27.41 He is currently in a heavenly sanctuary right now. 00:46:27.44\00:46:30.21 This is a reality check that all universities need to know. 00:46:30.24\00:46:34.06 We're also trying to reach out that 00:46:34.09\00:46:35.60 we have a Chinese people coming to United States 00:46:35.63\00:46:38.47 and getting their secondary education here. 00:46:38.50\00:46:40.46 These Chinese people are coming from a communist worldview. 00:46:40.49\00:46:43.91 They don't know who Adam and Eve are. 00:46:43.94\00:46:47.82 Is that crazy? Anyway that's bit crazy. 00:46:47.85\00:46:50.99 So giving Bible sermon on Adam and Eve 00:46:51.02\00:46:52.57 and they said hold on, hold on, who is Adam and Eve. 00:46:52.60\00:46:54.62 So we have to actually start from Adam and Eve 00:46:54.65\00:46:56.67 and then what happens is 00:46:56.70\00:46:57.73 we actually knocked on some doors. 00:46:57.76\00:46:59.21 We got two Chinese ladies 00:46:59.24\00:47:00.57 they're post graduate doctorate students. 00:47:00.60\00:47:02.91 They became Seventh-day Adventist from Bible studies. 00:47:02.94\00:47:04.92 They went back to China 00:47:04.95\00:47:06.83 and they have Adventist groups happening in China right now 00:47:06.86\00:47:08.88 and we didn't even go to China. 00:47:08.91\00:47:10.58 We're sending missionaries out from where we are. 00:47:10.61\00:47:12.29 So we're hoping that each city, each university town 00:47:12.32\00:47:15.63 has a vibrant propagating CAMPUS ministry, 00:47:15.66\00:47:18.76 we can impact the world from our backyards. 00:47:18.79\00:47:20.54 That's wonderful. 00:47:20.57\00:47:21.68 And where did you worked 00:47:21.71\00:47:22.74 before you came to the CAMPUS ministries, 00:47:22.77\00:47:24.25 what city where you were in. 00:47:24.28\00:47:25.31 I was working in city of Detroit. 00:47:25.34\00:47:27.50 I think there's a theme here. Thanks. 00:47:27.53\00:47:29.91 It wasn't planned that way. 00:47:29.94\00:47:32.65 I have another man I would like to introduce you to 00:47:32.68\00:47:34.87 his name is Ron Myers. 00:47:34.90\00:47:37.17 He directs the Radio 74 ministry 00:47:37.20\00:47:41.28 and I'm so happy to introduce you to everybody. 00:47:41.31\00:47:44.53 We were joking before hand 00:47:44.56\00:47:45.98 that usually he is the one who is doing the interview. 00:47:46.01\00:47:49.22 And we would both feel happier if we can just trade places. 00:47:49.25\00:47:51.93 So I don't know which one of us is more nervous. 00:47:51.96\00:47:53.65 But, now tell me what is Radio 74 00:47:53.68\00:47:57.01 and where are you located? 00:47:57.04\00:47:58.29 Radio 74 is based in France. 00:47:58.32\00:48:00.36 It began about 30 years ago 00:48:00.39\00:48:03.14 right on the borders with Geneva, Switzerland. 00:48:03.17\00:48:05.08 And so while we were France, 00:48:05.11\00:48:06.38 actually our biggest audience 00:48:06.41\00:48:07.63 is in Geneva, Lausanne, Switzerland. 00:48:07.66\00:48:09.44 About 1.4 million people have able to that station. 00:48:09.47\00:48:12.27 Now how long have you been working 00:48:12.30\00:48:13.63 and living in France? 00:48:13.66\00:48:15.04 Ah, about 30 years. Yeah, 30 some, yeah. 00:48:15.07\00:48:17.03 Thirty years so you don't have 00:48:17.06\00:48:18.09 a French accent, so where are you? 00:48:18.12\00:48:19.23 I can speak really French accent if you like in. 00:48:19.26\00:48:23.62 I wanted him to do that. 00:48:23.65\00:48:26.25 Now what kind of ministry is this 00:48:26.28\00:48:28.66 and what are you accomplishing over there in Europe. 00:48:28.69\00:48:31.24 Well, we build radio stations for local churches. 00:48:31.27\00:48:35.19 When I had been manager of Adventist World Radio. 00:48:35.22\00:48:37.82 In fact I was the second ever manager 00:48:37.85\00:48:39.32 going back to the late 70s. 00:48:39.35\00:48:41.43 And I went to France right when private radio opened. 00:48:41.46\00:48:45.48 It's all been state monopolies until then. 00:48:45.51\00:48:47.47 But this was a first chance to build radios 00:48:47.50\00:48:49.49 and I felt a call to go. 00:48:49.52\00:48:51.16 And I build some for the churches 00:48:51.19\00:48:52.26 and that fizzled in. 00:48:52.29\00:48:53.83 We started this little thing called Radio 74 00:48:53.86\00:48:55.73 that are 15 watt peanut vessel. 00:48:55.76\00:48:57.85 In a tit it grew. 00:48:57.88\00:48:59.49 Geneva was ready for an English speaking 00:48:59.52\00:49:01.20 radio station then and it has grown 00:49:01.23\00:49:03.56 to what is now a network of seven FM stations, 00:49:03.59\00:49:06.86 satellite to about 75 countries of Europe 00:49:06.89\00:49:09.46 and we reached probably into 00:49:09.49\00:49:12.78 lets say people of intelligence of position 00:49:12.81\00:49:16.52 we, of course in Geneva, that's the United Nations city. 00:49:16.55\00:49:19.68 And so there's lot of people of international. 00:49:19.71\00:49:21.45 Probably, a hundred national is listening to this station. 00:49:21.48\00:49:24.03 Now we hear over here that Europeans 00:49:24.06\00:49:25.77 are very resistant to the gospel 00:49:25.80\00:49:27.22 but you've had a fare measure of success recently. 00:49:27.25\00:49:29.99 Can you tell us a little bit about that? 00:49:30.02\00:49:31.98 Well Europeans are reachable. 00:49:32.01\00:49:33.74 I think if we're not reaching because we're not working there. 00:49:33.77\00:49:36.00 I think of Europe, 00:49:36.03\00:49:37.40 Western Europe, northern division. 00:49:37.43\00:49:39.95 It's really the-- 00:49:39.98\00:49:42.22 it's a forgotten continent in many ways. 00:49:42.25\00:49:45.20 We're not doing a lot there. 00:49:45.23\00:49:46.26 But where the with the radio has been its working, 00:49:46.29\00:49:48.88 people are coming in Lord. 00:49:48.91\00:49:49.94 They're hearing the gospel for the very first time. 00:49:49.97\00:49:52.90 Having Doug Batchelor on the air for the last 10 years 00:49:52.93\00:49:56.35 the time had come for him to come 00:49:56.38\00:49:57.83 and he came for the first time 00:49:57.86\00:49:59.17 to our division in March this year. 00:49:59.20\00:50:01.43 We had five meetings in four days. 00:50:01.46\00:50:03.99 The second night we asked the people to raise their hands. 00:50:04.02\00:50:06.12 How many of you come because you heard it on radio 74 00:50:06.15\00:50:09.27 just about every hand went up. 00:50:09.30\00:50:10.67 Oh, wow, that's fantastic. Oh, it's so exciting. 00:50:10.70\00:50:13.69 Now I know some will say that radio is old news 00:50:13.72\00:50:16.63 that the digital age and getting online. 00:50:16.66\00:50:18.96 Everybody is listening online 00:50:18.99\00:50:20.69 but obviously you believe that 00:50:20.72\00:50:22.21 radio is still a very viable important type of ministry. 00:50:22.24\00:50:25.77 Can you explain why you think that's not going to end? 00:50:25.80\00:50:28.01 Let me answer that question in a minute 00:50:28.04\00:50:29.36 because there is more to tell about Doug. 00:50:29.39\00:50:30.92 Okay, go ahead. 00:50:30.95\00:50:31.98 When Doug came, this was wonderful, 00:50:32.01\00:50:34.92 the people were ready they'd known him. 00:50:34.95\00:50:36.57 These-- he is part of their family 00:50:36.60\00:50:38.24 after listening for 10 years. 00:50:38.27\00:50:39.79 Two hours a day he is on our station. 00:50:39.82\00:50:43.30 The building filled 600 people were there in Geneva. 00:50:43.33\00:50:46.76 This is the fourth richest city on the planet. 00:50:46.79\00:50:49.90 This is just not the third world. 00:50:49.93\00:50:52.72 People showed up in mass and filled that hall. 00:50:52.75\00:50:55.43 Doug did a good job. The translation was excellent. 00:50:55.46\00:50:58.80 At second night we asked how many hands, 00:50:58.83\00:51:00.44 I mentioned there but there were 47 people 00:51:00.47\00:51:02.40 that said, "I want to be baptized." 00:51:02.43\00:51:04.27 Another 75 said, "I want the Bible studies." 00:51:04.30\00:51:07.32 This is Geneva, this hasn't happened in decades. 00:51:07.35\00:51:09.85 We praise God for the opportunities 00:51:09.88\00:51:12.25 to reach into a large city like this. 00:51:12.28\00:51:14.45 That's fantastic. Okay the question was. 00:51:14.48\00:51:16.66 The question was. 00:51:16.69\00:51:17.87 Tell me why radio is still a viable outreach tool 00:51:17.90\00:51:21.16 even though everybody is starting 00:51:21.19\00:51:22.26 to go online and listen online? 00:51:22.29\00:51:24.87 Television tried to bury radio decades ago, 00:51:24.90\00:51:28.00 it never happened. 00:51:28.03\00:51:29.07 Now the online, you know, all the gadgets 00:51:29.10\00:51:32.21 and everybody is walking around 00:51:32.24\00:51:34.36 looking at their hands these days 00:51:34.39\00:51:36.68 but you know you're still when you're driving your car, 00:51:36.71\00:51:40.64 you're still listening. 00:51:40.67\00:51:41.70 You can't watch television while driving. 00:51:41.73\00:51:43.74 You can't text that's against the law in most places. 00:51:43.77\00:51:46.40 Radio reaches and the other thing about radio, 00:51:46.43\00:51:50.39 it creates in your mind a picture, 00:51:50.42\00:51:53.21 images that are bigger than television. 00:51:53.24\00:51:55.85 Have you thought about that? 00:51:55.88\00:51:56.94 Your imagination can make something 00:51:56.97\00:51:59.45 even greater and it fits-- 00:51:59.48\00:52:01.28 it sticks more than having to create this by screens, 00:52:01.31\00:52:04.10 so I believe in radio. And it's so much cheaper. 00:52:04.13\00:52:07.17 That you mentioned diverse that goes with that earlier. 00:52:07.20\00:52:09.51 Faith comes by hearing. Yeah, by hearing. 00:52:09.54\00:52:12.69 Hearing by the word of God. That's right. 00:52:12.72\00:52:14.78 Now where else I know you're actually coming 00:52:14.81\00:52:17.58 to my city or near where I live in Denver. 00:52:17.61\00:52:20.65 You're going to--you've been working with the group 00:52:20.68\00:52:22.52 there that had built radio station there 00:52:22.55\00:52:25.50 and I know you've been branching out 00:52:25.53\00:52:27.30 all over the United States. 00:52:27.33\00:52:28.44 So it's not just in Europe anymore. 00:52:28.47\00:52:29.60 Well, we started about 10 years ago 00:52:29.63\00:52:31.17 with a low power phase and thought-- 00:52:31.20\00:52:34.27 I just felt a calling to do something 00:52:34.30\00:52:36.20 for my own home country and begin to call churches. 00:52:36.23\00:52:39.29 And we got about 30 low power stations going. 00:52:39.32\00:52:41.75 And we feed that program 00:52:41.78\00:52:42.81 and they were separate network by satellite 00:52:42.84\00:52:44.58 for North America 00:52:44.61\00:52:45.65 call Radio 74 Internationale with an 'e' on the end. 00:52:45.68\00:52:48.96 And that then expanded further about 00:52:48.99\00:52:51.92 four, five years ago 00:52:51.95\00:52:52.98 with non commercial education stations. 00:52:53.01\00:52:55.76 And we were quite successful in getting these. 00:52:55.79\00:52:57.36 We got nearly 30 more. 00:52:57.39\00:52:59.82 We built, we are up to 52 stations on the air now. 00:52:59.85\00:53:03.97 Denver, I'd hope this would reached Denver, I hope it will. 00:53:04.00\00:53:07.45 We've got some technical problems. 00:53:07.48\00:53:08.51 We need some prayers for Denver. Pray for us on this. 00:53:08.54\00:53:10.71 We're in a little trouble but its going to-- 00:53:10.74\00:53:11.95 it will workout, God will provide. 00:53:11.98\00:53:13.68 But the biggest story is this, 00:53:13.71\00:53:14.74 just this week a 570 foot tower 00:53:14.77\00:53:18.92 reached its ultimate height in Bismarck, North Dakota. 00:53:18.95\00:53:22.84 This will be a one 100,000 watts station. 00:53:22.87\00:53:25.15 And next week we get to go up 00:53:25.18\00:53:26.35 and tune up the transmitter get it on the air. 00:53:26.38\00:53:28.63 Another baby is going to be born for Jesus. 00:53:28.66\00:53:30.85 So what is your dream then, 00:53:30.88\00:53:32.05 to see how this is in the next few years for Radio 74? 00:53:32.08\00:53:35.53 Well, I'd love to see more stations on the air. 00:53:35.56\00:53:37.66 This is a dream I had a long time ago 00:53:37.69\00:53:40.85 to see radio just blanket the country. 00:53:40.88\00:53:44.59 We've got a 100,000 watt one going on 00:53:44.62\00:53:46.24 in South Dakota pretty soon. 00:53:46.27\00:53:47.78 Nebraska, 50,000 watts AM, 00:53:47.81\00:53:50.32 the last clear channel station will come on 00:53:50.35\00:53:52.09 in next couple of years in Anchorage, Alaska. 00:53:52.12\00:53:54.29 I'd to like to see an Adventist radio station 00:53:54.32\00:53:57.07 everywhere in the country. 00:53:57.10\00:53:58.30 We'll have to buy stations in the big cities. 00:53:58.33\00:54:00.59 It going to cost a few million. 00:54:00.62\00:54:02.23 But it can happen. But it can happen. 00:54:02.26\00:54:04.10 Now tell me where were you, 00:54:04.13\00:54:06.16 where did you live when you became a Christian? 00:54:06.19\00:54:08.55 I was raised in Adventist 00:54:08.58\00:54:09.68 but you know a cultural Adventist. Right. 00:54:09.71\00:54:11.35 And I got into rock and roll into my 20s 00:54:11.38\00:54:13.86 and then the Lord supernaturally healed me. 00:54:13.89\00:54:16.27 And I quit the rock and roll, 00:54:16.30\00:54:17.39 went to a Christian station and-- 00:54:17.42\00:54:19.27 You were in what city?
