Amen! 00:00:58.92\00:01:00.96 We began our evening with Pastor Jim Gilley: a wonderful 00:01:01.16\00:01:03.47 message and then followed by Pastor David Shin. 00:01:03.57\00:01:06.09 But I want you to stay tuned because Pastor C.A. Murray... 00:01:06.30\00:01:09.30 The message is entitled The Remnant and Its Mission. 00:01:09.45\00:01:12.65 If you are within the southern Illinois area 00:01:12.85\00:01:15.78 or you don't mind driving, we'd like to encourage you to come. 00:01:15.89\00:01:18.07 Even there are many here from Huntsville, Alabama, 00:01:18.27\00:01:21.57 already. Am I right? Anybody from California tonight? 00:01:21.77\00:01:25.08 OK, we have people that drove all week long to get here. 00:01:25.29\00:01:28.31 And so if you want to determine to be part of this wonderful 00:01:28.51\00:01:32.17 Spirit-filled weekend where we are talking about the pillars 00:01:32.37\00:01:35.18 of our faith, we encourage you to come. 00:01:35.28\00:01:37.44 We have some excellent speakers. 00:01:37.64\00:01:39.11 You can go to our 3ABN.org website and look at the lineup 00:01:39.31\00:01:43.13 of all the messages tomorrow. 00:01:43.33\00:01:45.75 We have on Friday a wonderful concert. 00:01:45.95\00:01:47.71 The new Pillars project is going to be released about the hymns. 00:01:47.81\00:01:51.39 It's wonderful; you don't want to miss that. 00:01:51.69\00:01:53.33 But tonight we want you to sit tight as the Lord 00:01:53.53\00:01:56.49 opens our hearts and our minds for a wonderful message. 00:01:56.69\00:02:00.36 We just heard about God's church... how precious it is. 00:02:00.56\00:02:03.64 And we know in the last days God has a remnant, 00:02:03.84\00:02:06.81 does He not? But the remnant also has a mission. 00:02:07.01\00:02:09.61 And the devil will do anything he can to thwart the mission 00:02:09.81\00:02:12.65 of the remnant church. But tonight there's 00:02:12.75\00:02:14.74 encouragement in the Word of God. 00:02:14.84\00:02:16.70 And it's my privilege to introduce my pastor, 00:02:16.91\00:02:19.55 Pastor C.A. Murray, who was my pastor when I was in 00:02:19.75\00:02:22.23 New York City out in the world. 00:02:22.33\00:02:23.76 Every Sabbath I would come to church and Pastor Murray 00:02:23.96\00:02:26.23 would preach to me until one day the Lord broke through. 00:02:26.33\00:02:28.50 So I'm his pastor now but he's still my pastor. 00:02:28.70\00:02:31.43 But tonight I want you to put your hearts 00:02:31.83\00:02:34.67 where God wants them to be. Pray for the Spirit of God 00:02:34.87\00:02:38.06 to open your ears to listen to what the Lord has 00:02:38.16\00:02:41.14 to say to you. The Lord has also given me the opportunity 00:02:41.24\00:02:44.43 to begin this meeting with a song. 00:02:44.63\00:02:47.32 You know, I think that the blessing of the remnant, 00:02:47.52\00:02:49.77 even its mission, is because 00:02:49.97\00:02:53.64 there is still power in the blood of Jesus Christ. 00:02:53.74\00:02:57.12 There's a fountain that continues to flow. 00:02:57.32\00:02:58.97 And I pray that the Lord will speak to your heart tonight 00:02:59.17\00:03:01.64 as you listen to this message. 00:03:01.84\00:03:03.26 After the song the next voice you will hear 00:03:03.46\00:03:05.65 will be that of Pastor C.A. Murray. 00:03:05.75\00:03:07.23 There is a fountain 00:03:24.67\00:03:29.08 filled with blood 00:03:29.28\00:03:31.89 Draw from Immanuel's veins; 00:03:32.39\00:03:38.31 And sinners plunged 00:03:40.30\00:03:43.76 beneath that flood, 00:03:43.96\00:03:47.46 Lose all their guilty 00:03:47.66\00:03:52.46 stains; 00:03:52.56\00:03:55.09 Lose all their guilty 00:03:55.39\00:04:00.50 stains, 00:04:00.70\00:04:03.03 Lose all their guilty 00:04:03.43\00:04:07.76 stains; 00:04:07.96\00:04:10.38 And sinners plunged 00:04:11.51\00:04:15.12 beneath that flood, 00:04:15.32\00:04:18.81 Lose all their guilty 00:04:19.01\00:04:23.71 stains. 00:04:23.81\00:04:26.65 The dying thief 00:04:27.06\00:04:30.58 rejoiced to see 00:04:30.78\00:04:34.68 That fountain in his day; 00:04:34.88\00:04:40.64 And there may I, 00:04:42.71\00:04:46.17 though vile as he, 00:04:46.37\00:04:49.91 wash all my sins 00:04:50.21\00:04:54.03 away; 00:04:54.13\00:04:57.59 Wash all my sins 00:04:57.89\00:05:01.76 away, 00:05:01.96\00:05:05.38 Wash all my sins 00:05:05.78\00:05:09.58 away; 00:05:09.68\00:05:13.28 And there may I, 00:05:13.48\00:05:17.33 though vile as he, 00:05:17.53\00:05:21.05 Wash all my sins 00:05:21.25\00:05:25.18 away. 00:05:25.38\00:05:29.87 Ever since by faith 00:05:32.48\00:05:36.81 I saw that stream 00:05:37.01\00:05:40.87 Thy flowing wounds 00:05:41.27\00:05:44.58 supply, 00:05:44.68\00:05:48.38 Redeeming love 00:05:48.49\00:05:52.35 has been my theme, 00:05:52.55\00:05:56.19 And shall be 00:05:56.39\00:05:59.21 till I die; 00:05:59.41\00:06:03.03 And shall be till I 00:06:03.33\00:06:08.84 die, 00:06:08.94\00:06:11.97 Yes, it shall be till 00:06:12.28\00:06:15.56 I die; 00:06:15.76\00:06:19.68 Your redeeming love 00:06:19.98\00:06:23.29 has been my theme, 00:06:23.49\00:06:27.30 And shall be till 00:06:27.60\00:06:31.26 I die... 00:06:31.46\00:06:37.36 And shall be 00:06:38.34\00:06:43.67 till I 00:06:43.87\00:06:48.61 die. 00:06:49.71\00:06:55.69 Amen. 00:07:06.07\00:07:08.21 Thank you my pastor, my friend. 00:07:11.01\00:07:13.04 Sometimes as his pastor I have to give him a little correction 00:07:16.11\00:07:18.99 still. But we've known each other for 00:07:19.19\00:07:23.33 well over 30 years 00:07:23.53\00:07:24.93 and we have been good friends that whole time. 00:07:25.14\00:07:28.57 I knew him before he married Angie 00:07:28.77\00:07:31.46 when she was one of the fair damsels 00:07:31.66\00:07:34.16 in the Bethel Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:07:34.27\00:07:35.62 in Brooklyn, New York. 00:07:35.72\00:07:37.22 Angie was much sought after 00:07:37.62\00:07:40.08 but she had eyes only for John. 00:07:40.39\00:07:43.21 And she corralled him, 00:07:43.51\00:07:48.27 and they have been happy ever after. 00:07:48.47\00:07:52.13 My burden tonight is the remnant and its mission. 00:07:55.50\00:07:58.98 And when I began to study the remnant 00:07:59.18\00:08:02.59 the theme that I was running into I wasn't really 00:08:04.41\00:08:07.95 that happy with. 00:08:08.15\00:08:09.66 Because I read some of the BRI material. 00:08:09.86\00:08:13.76 I read some of the things that were in 00:08:13.96\00:08:16.10 the 27 Fundamental Beliefs. 00:08:16.30\00:08:18.17 And I didn't want to move in that direction 00:08:18.38\00:08:21.47 because there was a redemptive aspect that 00:08:21.67\00:08:24.82 I thought was... was missing. 00:08:25.02\00:08:26.82 And so I wanted to change and I prayed about it 00:08:27.02\00:08:29.83 and then I found out that one of the other speakers 00:08:30.03\00:08:33.27 was going to be covering that same material from a 00:08:33.47\00:08:36.30 different aspect... so it left me free to do what I wanted 00:08:36.50\00:08:39.90 to do. I wanted to be a little more eclectic 00:08:40.01\00:08:42.04 as we talked about the remnant this night. 00:08:42.24\00:08:45.05 And I wanted to get through the remnant with all due respect 00:08:45.25\00:08:47.41 to my good buddy David Shin. 00:08:47.51\00:08:50.34 I wanted to talk about the remnant without mentioning 00:08:50.54\00:08:53.16 cloth or material. 00:08:53.36\00:08:56.08 I wanted to come from an entirely different place... 00:08:56.28\00:09:01.30 a little more esoteric look at the remnant. 00:09:01.50\00:09:04.00 So I ask you to turn with me to that text which stirred 00:09:04.20\00:09:07.46 the hearts of our forefathers 00:09:07.56\00:09:09.98 a century and a half ago: Revelation chapter 12 00:09:10.19\00:09:12.82 and verse 17 as we talk about 00:09:13.32\00:09:16.50 the remnant and its mission. 00:09:16.60\00:09:19.70 Revelation 12 and 17. 00:09:19.80\00:09:24.08 But before we dare read the Word of God, 00:09:24.28\00:09:26.95 let us talk to the Lord. 00:09:27.15\00:09:28.33 Gracious Father, we do praise you and thank you 00:09:28.53\00:09:31.05 for Your Word which is a lamp unto our feet 00:09:31.26\00:09:34.58 and a light that shines on the path to glory. 00:09:34.78\00:09:38.87 Open now our understanding 00:09:39.17\00:09:43.22 as we open the scriptures 00:09:43.32\00:09:45.72 so that we may see and know and do. 00:09:45.75\00:09:48.96 And we thank you in Jesus' name, Amen. 00:09:49.16\00:09:52.67 I am reading and you're hearing Revelation chapter 12 verse 17 00:09:52.97\00:09:56.42 from the New King James. 00:09:56.52\00:09:59.24 The Bible says: "And the dragon was enraged 00:09:59.34\00:10:02.73 with the woman and went to make war 00:10:02.93\00:10:06.72 with the rest of her offspring... " 00:10:06.92\00:10:09.94 Your Bible I think says in the King James 00:10:10.14\00:10:12.44 "the remnant of her seed. " 00:10:12.54\00:10:14.55 "Who keep the commandments of God 00:10:14.75\00:10:18.47 and have the testimony of Jesus Christ. " 00:10:18.67\00:10:24.54 Since our earliest days we have known 00:10:25.89\00:10:28.92 and called ourselves "the remnant. " 00:10:29.12\00:10:32.59 Now I hasten to say not A remnant 00:10:33.86\00:10:36.67 but THE remnant... 00:10:36.87\00:10:39.61 because there is only one true remnant. 00:10:39.81\00:10:44.94 In 1846 a young Ellen Harmon 00:10:45.34\00:10:49.55 yet to be married to James White 00:10:49.75\00:10:52.27 wrote the first and only tract that she wrote as 00:10:52.47\00:10:55.85 a single woman. And it was entitled 00:10:56.05\00:10:59.39 To The Little Remnant Scattered Abroad. 00:10:59.59\00:11:03.88 Ellen Harmon knew - even as a young girl - 00:11:04.18\00:11:09.07 that she was part of the remnant. 00:11:09.27\00:11:12.11 And even in the wake of that great disappointment of 1844... 00:11:12.42\00:11:16.90 you know about October 22, 1844, 00:11:17.10\00:11:20.77 when the Millerite Adventists to many in the evangelical world 00:11:20.97\00:11:26.56 had become a laughingstock. 00:11:26.76\00:11:29.15 A joke; a byword. 00:11:29.35\00:11:32.93 Even in the wake of that tough time 00:11:33.13\00:11:36.57 the early pioneers knew that they were a remnant. 00:11:36.77\00:11:41.40 In fact, it was remnant theology that allowed them 00:11:41.53\00:11:44.86 to make sense out of such a great disappointment. 00:11:45.06\00:11:48.61 It was remnant theology that allowed them 00:11:48.82\00:11:51.90 to hold up their heads. You know, I am tempted to... 00:11:52.10\00:11:55.26 to drift off into May 21, 00:11:55.46\00:11:58.90 2011, but I will resist the temptation. 00:12:00.24\00:12:03.64 Yeah, I'll resist it. 00:12:06.41\00:12:08.73 But it was remnant theology that allowed them 00:12:09.99\00:12:13.49 to holds their heads up in the face of what 00:12:13.69\00:12:17.40 must have been a devastating time for the believers. 00:12:17.60\00:12:20.77 You see, remnant can be a group of unified believers 00:12:21.07\00:12:25.78 gathered together as we are in this place. 00:12:25.98\00:12:27.96 Or it can be individuals in single places 00:12:28.26\00:12:31.82 or groups scattered all around the world. 00:12:32.02\00:12:34.43 Because what defines remnant is not proximity. 00:12:34.63\00:12:38.57 In fact, that which makes a person, a group, 00:12:39.99\00:12:43.62 a church, or a nation part of the remnant 00:12:43.82\00:12:46.53 is only partially discernable - 00:12:46.63\00:12:49.25 I need you to stick with me - 00:12:49.45\00:12:50.49 Because the remnant is in here 00:12:50.69\00:12:55.03 and the remnant is in here 00:12:55.23\00:12:58.75 and most importantly the remnant is in here. 00:12:58.96\00:13:04.01 The remnant has always been, is now, 00:13:04.31\00:13:09.22 and will always be part of what is found in 00:13:09.42\00:13:12.26 Colossians chapter 1 verse 27. 00:13:12.46\00:13:14.38 "Christ in you... the hope of glory. " 00:13:14.58\00:13:17.96 In fact, one the translations that I saw the other day 00:13:18.16\00:13:21.18 says: "Christ in you... the ONLY hope of glory. " 00:13:21.38\00:13:25.64 And so as the Advent pioneers studied, they saw 00:13:27.02\00:13:31.00 a remnant theology playing out in their own lives. 00:13:31.20\00:13:34.63 And they were drawn to this marvelous text: 00:13:34.83\00:13:37.57 Revelation chapter 12 verse 17. 00:13:37.77\00:13:39.87 They read that the dragon was wroth, was enraged 00:13:40.07\00:13:43.32 with the woman - that is, the church - and went 00:13:43.52\00:13:46.47 to make war. And they saw that as the answer 00:13:46.67\00:13:49.39 to the reasons why they were gettin' beat up. 00:13:49.59\00:13:52.41 They were gettin' beat up because they were at war. 00:13:53.90\00:13:58.12 And when you're at war, you get beat up. 00:13:58.32\00:14:02.31 And so the scattered brethren saw their plight, 00:14:05.71\00:14:09.47 their disappointment and subsequent chagrin 00:14:09.67\00:14:12.48 as further evidence that they were the remnant of God. 00:14:12.68\00:14:18.40 This text said to them 00:14:18.60\00:14:21.92 that Satan was intent on the destruction of the woman. 00:14:22.12\00:14:26.67 And they saw the woman in Jeremiah chapter 6 verse 2 00:14:26.87\00:14:29.42 as the church. Satan was setting out to annihilate 00:14:29.62\00:14:33.82 the end-time manifestation of the people of God. 00:14:34.02\00:14:38.06 These pioneers knew that the devil had always 00:14:38.46\00:14:42.87 trained his guns on the people of God. 00:14:43.07\00:14:46.39 And they realized that in these last days 00:14:46.60\00:14:49.66 Satan would train his guns on us! 00:14:49.86\00:14:53.80 So they accepted the dictum of Revelation 12:12 00:14:55.47\00:14:58.34 that Satan would come down having great wrath 00:14:58.54\00:15:01.98 because he knows... Ladies and gentlemen, 00:15:02.18\00:15:07.51 I assure you Satan knows. 00:15:07.71\00:15:11.38 And even if you don't, he does! 00:15:11.58\00:15:15.54 He doesn't conjecture; he doesn't suppose. 00:15:15.74\00:15:20.11 He doesn't guess; he doesn't think... 00:15:20.31\00:15:23.10 Satan KNOWS his time is short. 00:15:23.30\00:15:27.54 And even if you don't, he does. 00:15:28.89\00:15:32.02 We are, therefore, a people of the eschaton. 00:15:33.44\00:15:35.75 You know that word. 00:15:35.95\00:15:37.03 A people of the end. Our ecclesiology 00:15:37.23\00:15:40.81 is driven by our eschatology. In other words, 00:15:41.01\00:15:43.23 how we do church is informed by the fact 00:15:43.43\00:15:46.35 that we don't have long to do church. 00:15:46.55\00:15:48.62 What we do every day and on Sabbath is guided 00:15:49.66\00:15:52.52 by what Christ has done, is doing, 00:15:52.73\00:15:55.27 and one day soon will do. 00:15:55.47\00:15:58.37 We are moved and motivated by the fact 00:15:58.57\00:16:01.67 that Jesus is coming again 00:16:01.87\00:16:04.08 and He's coming soon. Amen. 00:16:04.28\00:16:06.37 So attacking the remnant is Satan's last shot at God. 00:16:09.10\00:16:15.01 It's not about us. 00:16:15.51\00:16:17.12 Satan doesn't care about you or me. 00:16:17.32\00:16:19.29 We're just pawns. 00:16:19.49\00:16:20.94 The great controversy is between Christ and Satan. 00:16:21.14\00:16:26.04 Heaven has a 7,000-year score to settle with the devil. 00:16:27.39\00:16:31.66 The devil hates Jesus. 00:16:31.86\00:16:34.70 He can't get to Jesus any more, 00:16:34.73\00:16:37.31 so he hurts Christ by hurting those for whom Christ died. 00:16:37.51\00:16:42.97 You know, somebody puts their hands on your child 00:16:43.17\00:16:45.50 they're putting their hands on you. 00:16:45.70\00:16:47.31 So Satan can't get to Christ. 00:16:49.13\00:16:51.20 So attacking the remnant is his last-ditch attempt 00:16:51.40\00:16:57.25 to hurt Jesus. 00:16:57.45\00:16:59.49 Satan has known his unalterable, 00:16:59.69\00:17:04.48 inevitable, unavoidable fate for a long time 00:17:04.69\00:17:08.52 ladies and gentlemen. 00:17:08.72\00:17:10.01 In John chapter 12 verse 31 the Bible says: 00:17:10.21\00:17:12.84 "Now is the judgment of this world; 00:17:13.04\00:17:15.04 now is the ruler of this world cast out. " 00:17:15.25\00:17:20.17 And when Jesus said: "It is finished, " Satan knew 00:17:21.72\00:17:26.70 he was too. 00:17:26.91\00:17:28.70 Matthew 25 verse 41 says 00:17:29.00\00:17:32.46 hell fire was prepared for the devil and his angels. 00:17:32.66\00:17:38.33 Don't you think Satan knows that? 00:17:40.04\00:17:41.88 And I submit to you ladies and gentlemen: 00:17:43.91\00:17:46.03 that is one party you don't want to crash. 00:17:46.23\00:17:48.61 There are no engraved tickets for you at that occasion, 00:17:49.98\00:17:55.71 so why would you print one for yourself? 00:17:55.94\00:18:00.26 Satan knows and understands Jesus. 00:18:03.55\00:18:06.33 He knows and understands that his end is not far. 00:18:06.53\00:18:10.49 Satan knows that you can't pin it on the Roman soldiers. 00:18:10.69\00:18:13.89 You can't pin it on Caiaphas. 00:18:14.09\00:18:15.95 You can't pin it on the Jews. 00:18:16.15\00:18:17.87 The ultimate person responsible for the death of Christ 00:18:18.07\00:18:21.18 is him... 00:18:22.85\00:18:24.92 and he will have to pay. 00:18:25.12\00:18:28.16 Is there anyone here... is there anyone in this building 00:18:28.47\00:18:32.25 that thinks Satan is not watching the clock? 00:18:32.45\00:18:35.25 You'd better believe he's watching the clock. 00:18:38.14\00:18:40.10 He knows his time is short. 00:18:41.39\00:18:43.32 He knows what's going to happen. 00:18:43.52\00:18:45.89 He knows better than we that God is not slack 00:18:46.09\00:18:49.88 concerning His promises... and that's any of His promises. 00:18:50.08\00:18:53.19 And so he's got the Laodicean church asleep 00:18:55.79\00:18:59.70 and he wants us to stay asleep 00:18:59.90\00:19:04.10 because Satan knows something that we may not know. 00:19:04.30\00:19:08.95 He has a true understanding of the remnant. 00:19:10.85\00:19:14.01 Now let me tell you what I now know 00:19:14.31\00:19:19.45 that Satan has always known. 00:19:19.65\00:19:22.89 When we contemplate remnant - 00:19:23.29\00:19:26.86 this is Remnant 101... 00:19:27.06\00:19:28.76 When we contemplate remnant we are not talking about 00:19:30.72\00:19:33.43 one remnant but three. 00:19:33.63\00:19:35.27 Or more accurately, three manifestations 00:19:35.57\00:19:39.86 of the same remnant. 00:19:40.06\00:19:41.62 When we parse remnant 00:19:43.79\00:19:46.33 we come out with three facets or manifestations. 00:19:46.53\00:19:49.22 One: we have the historical remnant. 00:19:49.32\00:19:51.11 What did I say? Historical remnant. 00:19:51.21\00:19:53.32 Secondly we have the faithful remnant. 00:19:53.52\00:19:55.89 What did I say? Faithful remnant. 00:19:56.10\00:19:57.84 And thirdly the eschatological remnant. 00:19:58.04\00:20:00.37 Eschatological remnant. That's what I said! 00:20:00.57\00:20:02.60 They can and have and do exist 00:20:08.35\00:20:11.67 individually, simultaneously, and sequentially. 00:20:11.87\00:20:14.99 Now we're going to work our way through all of that. 00:20:15.19\00:20:17.01 What is remnant? What is remnant? 00:20:17.21\00:20:18.89 Ideologically remnant is anything that is left 00:20:18.99\00:20:22.41 after a catastrophe. 00:20:22.61\00:20:24.19 The technical definition of remnant. 00:20:24.39\00:20:26.40 A catastrophe is something that tears or rips apart 00:20:26.60\00:20:31.69 anything that is intended to be a whole. 00:20:31.89\00:20:35.20 Biblically, remnant exists anytime, anywhere 00:20:37.80\00:20:42.31 there is a dividing of categories and classes. 00:20:42.51\00:20:47.35 Now you're in remnant school so stick with me. 00:20:47.55\00:20:49.69 Any time there's a dividing into categories. 00:20:51.77\00:20:54.18 Faithful and faithless. Godly; godless. 00:20:54.38\00:20:57.55 True; false. Sheep; goats. 00:20:57.75\00:21:00.50 Wheat; tares. Just; unjust. 00:21:00.70\00:21:03.16 Canonical; apocryphal. 00:21:03.36\00:21:05.49 Heterodoxy; orthodoxy. 00:21:05.69\00:21:08.91 Fidelity; perfidy. 00:21:09.11\00:21:11.55 Good; bad. Right; wrong. 00:21:11.75\00:21:14.65 Any time there's a division you've got a remnant. 00:21:14.85\00:21:17.78 In short, remnant coreference is judgment. 00:21:17.99\00:21:22.17 When you think remnant think judgment. 00:21:22.37\00:21:25.49 It is sanctified and it is judgment. 00:21:26.72\00:21:31.28 So then, remnant and judgment exist much like law and sin. 00:21:31.48\00:21:36.85 Whenever God creates separation, 00:21:37.05\00:21:41.75 when God chooses to drop a plumb line, 00:21:41.95\00:21:46.15 that act of separation is ipso facto 00:21:46.35\00:21:52.02 judgment. 00:21:52.22\00:21:53.26 And one of the two remaining groups 00:21:53.96\00:21:57.21 as you divide something - 00:21:57.51\00:21:59.60 that's a catastrophe, that's judgment - 00:21:59.80\00:22:01.79 is de facto apostate... the other, remnant. 00:22:01.99\00:22:07.72 As such, judgment and remnant 00:22:08.02\00:22:13.44 function in the same co-relative sense 00:22:13.64\00:22:17.50 as do law and sin. 00:22:17.70\00:22:19.46 Now what did he just say? 00:22:19.49\00:22:21.17 I John chapter 3 verse 4: 00:22:23.48\00:22:26.68 "He who commits sin transgresses also the law 00:22:26.88\00:22:29.43 for sin is the transgression of the law. " 00:22:29.64\00:22:32.54 Let's see if I can remember my Greek. "He who commits 00:22:32.64\00:22:34.55 hamartia - missing the mark - 00:22:34.65\00:22:36.28 also transgresses the law for hamartia is anomia. " 00:22:36.48\00:22:40.28 In other words, there can be no sin 00:22:40.48\00:22:45.64 without law. 00:22:45.85\00:22:48.45 You know that. In order to have sin 00:22:48.65\00:22:50.77 you've gotta have law. 00:22:50.97\00:22:52.02 Where there is no law there can be no... 00:22:52.22\00:22:54.51 because sin is the transgression of the... 00:22:54.81\00:22:57.52 So you don't have law you cannot have... 00:22:57.72\00:22:59.55 So sin presupposes law. 00:22:59.76\00:23:04.38 In fact, sin is defined by law. 00:23:04.59\00:23:08.22 You understand that? 00:23:08.42\00:23:09.47 I submit that where there is no judgment 00:23:09.77\00:23:13.83 there can be no remnant 00:23:14.03\00:23:16.63 because remnant is defined by judgment. 00:23:16.83\00:23:21.69 Sin presupposes law, 00:23:21.89\00:23:25.25 remnant presupposes judgment, 00:23:25.45\00:23:28.68 and Satan knows it. 00:23:28.88\00:23:32.13 Because remnant defines God's kingdom 00:23:32.43\00:23:36.24 so it also must define his. 00:23:36.44\00:23:39.26 Because you will forgive my pejorative English 00:23:39.46\00:23:42.39 either you is or you aint. 00:23:42.59\00:23:46.83 Amen? Amen. So if you're in God's kingdom 00:23:47.03\00:23:52.15 you can't be in Satan's kingdom. 00:23:52.35\00:23:55.48 And if you're in Satan's kingdom 00:23:57.20\00:23:59.95 EXCUSE ME 00:24:00.15\00:24:03.13 you can't be in... So if you're in the remnant 00:24:03.53\00:24:08.47 you can't be in Satan's kingdom. 00:24:08.67\00:24:10.77 And Satan knows that. 00:24:11.07\00:24:12.81 Painfully aware of that. 00:24:14.15\00:24:16.59 And so remnant is as old as Eden 00:24:16.89\00:24:21.70 and as modern as today. 00:24:21.90\00:24:24.47 It is remnant theology that allows us to call ourselves 00:24:24.67\00:24:28.71 spiritual Israel. Amen. 00:24:28.91\00:24:30.94 That's remnant theology. 00:24:31.14\00:24:32.47 Remnant theology is all through the Bible even though 00:24:32.67\00:24:35.69 the name remnant may not be there. 00:24:35.79\00:24:37.82 Spiritual Israel is a remnant statement. 00:24:38.12\00:24:43.32 Every time you say spiritual Israel 00:24:43.52\00:24:46.76 you are making a remnant statement that's part of 00:24:46.96\00:24:50.75 remnant theology. 00:24:50.85\00:24:51.92 It is remnant theology that allows us to appropriate 00:24:52.12\00:24:54.94 to ourselves and accept the promises 00:24:55.04\00:24:58.69 given to Abraham as pointing to us. 00:24:58.79\00:25:02.21 That's remnant theology. 00:25:03.77\00:25:05.37 Abraham looked for a city 00:25:05.57\00:25:08.25 whose builder and maker is God. 00:25:08.45\00:25:12.60 Well hey! I'm looking for the same town. 00:25:12.80\00:25:16.39 What about you? 00:25:17.63\00:25:19.67 And the promises that God gave to Abraham 00:25:19.97\00:25:24.27 I take for myself because of remnant theology. 00:25:24.48\00:25:29.64 If I'm in Christ 00:25:29.94\00:25:32.66 then I am Abraham's seed. 00:25:32.86\00:25:36.46 That's a remnant statement. 00:25:36.66\00:25:37.94 That is remnant theology. 00:25:38.14\00:25:40.09 "And heirs according to the promise. " Now, 00:25:40.29\00:25:42.44 that's remnant speak. We're going to get to a text - 00:25:42.64\00:25:46.90 Hebrews 11:40... 00:25:47.10\00:25:48.64 I want you to prepare to put your dancing shoes on 00:25:48.85\00:25:52.42 so when we get to it if you don't dance... 00:25:53.62\00:25:56.57 Well, you will. 00:25:56.77\00:25:58.94 Galatians chapter 3 verse 29. 00:25:59.24\00:26:01.09 What book did I say? 00:26:01.19\00:26:02.41 Galatians chapter 3 and verse 29. 00:26:02.61\00:26:04.39 Love this text! 00:26:06.05\00:26:07.68 "If you are Christ's... " that's judgment 00:26:07.88\00:26:11.07 because either you are or you're not... 00:26:11.27\00:26:14.03 "then you are Abraham's seed... " that's remnant... 00:26:14.53\00:26:18.82 "and heirs... " that's remnant. 00:26:19.02\00:26:21.73 Christ is historical remnant theology. 00:26:21.97\00:26:25.27 Abraham's seed: faithful remnant theology. 00:26:25.47\00:26:28.98 Heirs: eschatological remnant theology. 00:26:29.18\00:26:32.02 All in that one text. 00:26:32.22\00:26:33.84 So if the remnant is a last-day definition, 00:26:34.04\00:26:37.96 where is the first? 00:26:38.16\00:26:40.38 Well, we have to go back to the Old Testament 00:26:40.58\00:26:43.02 to a line beginning with Adam, 00:26:43.22\00:26:47.60 running through Abel, 00:26:47.80\00:26:50.80 then to Seth and to the patriarchs of old, 00:26:51.00\00:26:54.85 to Israel as a nation, 00:26:55.06\00:26:58.28 but within the reality of the historical remnant. 00:27:00.63\00:27:05.06 See the historical remnant is easy to spot. 00:27:05.26\00:27:07.01 When you say historical remnant 00:27:07.21\00:27:08.82 you're really talking about Israel. 00:27:08.93\00:27:10.59 Plain and simple. They're there; they're easy to spot. 00:27:10.79\00:27:14.21 The challenge comes 00:27:16.70\00:27:18.55 that within the historical remnant 00:27:18.95\00:27:23.80 there has always been a faithful remnant. 00:27:24.00\00:27:28.70 They're a little tougher to spot. 00:27:28.90\00:27:31.93 You see, the game changed - 00:27:33.35\00:27:38.21 if I can use that terminology - 00:27:38.42\00:27:41.77 the terrain shifted when God called a people. 00:27:41.97\00:27:47.68 When it was one on one - God and Adam, 00:27:49.14\00:27:52.99 God and Eve, God and Seth - 00:27:53.19\00:27:55.40 then God changed the game 00:27:57.24\00:28:02.59 by calling a people. 00:28:04.10\00:28:06.08 Now let me give you a news flash: 00:28:06.28\00:28:09.56 putting truth in the hand of human beings 00:28:12.84\00:28:18.72 is risky business. 00:28:18.92\00:28:20.92 Say Amen. 00:28:21.12\00:28:24.05 If you can't say Amen, say ouch. 00:28:24.25\00:28:27.18 But putting truth in the hands of people 00:28:29.80\00:28:34.94 is risky, risky business. 00:28:35.14\00:28:39.49 When you take the oracles of God 00:28:41.09\00:28:44.64 and give it to a frail human being 00:28:44.94\00:28:49.09 expecting that human being to handle it 00:28:49.40\00:28:54.38 with the deference to which it is due 00:28:54.58\00:28:57.04 and to rightly represent the giver... 00:28:57.34\00:29:02.36 that's risky business. 00:29:02.66\00:29:05.56 When you've got a message that is of divine 00:29:06.06\00:29:11.96 sublime origin and you put it in the tongue 00:29:12.16\00:29:17.39 of a frail human being 00:29:17.59\00:29:20.05 you're taking a big chance. 00:29:20.25\00:29:23.43 When I was studying for my doctorate in mass communications 00:29:24.86\00:29:29.70 one of the things they told us in crisis management 00:29:29.90\00:29:31.59 is that when you've got a message to get out - 00:29:31.79\00:29:34.32 particularly if you're in a crisis - 00:29:34.52\00:29:35.84 give it to one person. 00:29:36.04\00:29:37.65 Yeah. You notice when you want to get a message 00:29:38.35\00:29:41.48 from the White House everybody doesn't speak 00:29:41.58\00:29:43.16 for the president. You go to his press person 00:29:43.26\00:29:46.73 and that's the only person who speaks for the president. 00:29:46.93\00:29:50.06 Because when you give your message to a lot of people 00:29:50.26\00:29:53.51 the message can get muddled. 00:29:53.71\00:29:56.53 That's the first thing about crisis. 00:29:58.00\00:29:59.30 When you've got a crisis one person speaks... 00:29:59.50\00:30:01.56 not everybody. 00:30:03.23\00:30:06.14 And that is because truth - 00:30:06.44\00:30:10.24 listen to me - truth, though taught, 00:30:10.44\00:30:16.43 the vision that underscores and undergirds truth 00:30:18.79\00:30:24.63 is not taught... it is caught. 00:30:25.03\00:30:30.27 Truth has to be taught, 00:30:32.00\00:30:33.50 but the vision that upholds truth - 00:30:33.70\00:30:37.39 the foundation really upon which truth stands - 00:30:37.59\00:30:41.93 is not taught... it is caught. 00:30:42.13\00:30:47.24 Now I can teach you "God so loved the world. " 00:30:47.44\00:30:52.81 I can teach you that. 00:30:53.01\00:30:55.14 But those are just words 00:30:55.44\00:30:58.23 until you realize that God so loved the world 00:30:58.63\00:31:04.53 that He gave Jesus for you. 00:31:04.73\00:31:08.23 I can't teach you that. 00:31:08.44\00:31:10.71 You've got to catch that. 00:31:10.74\00:31:13.59 You follow me? 00:31:13.79\00:31:15.28 I can teach you the words. 00:31:15.38\00:31:16.52 I can drill the Bible into your head. 00:31:16.72\00:31:19.97 But the reality of that, the beauty of that, 00:31:20.17\00:31:23.64 the pathos of that, the strength of that... 00:31:23.85\00:31:25.93 you've got to catch that. 00:31:26.13\00:31:28.32 Cannot be taught. 00:31:28.62\00:31:31.59 In fact, catching the gospel is so important 00:31:32.71\00:31:35.97 that the Bible tells us precisely the moment 00:31:36.17\00:31:39.14 that Jesus caught it. 00:31:39.34\00:31:41.08 You remember that famous trip? 00:31:42.86\00:31:45.34 That Passover voyage of Mary and Joseph 00:31:45.54\00:31:50.76 where they lost Jesus. 00:31:51.06\00:31:54.22 Lost the Son of God. 00:31:54.42\00:31:58.82 Thought He was somewhere in the back of the mini-van. 00:31:59.12\00:32:03.22 Lost Him. 00:32:05.32\00:32:07.28 But He wasn't lost. 00:32:07.59\00:32:09.82 He was about His Father's business. 00:32:11.29\00:32:13.25 And as He went to the temple, He went to the services 00:32:13.55\00:32:19.29 and saw the priests... 00:32:19.49\00:32:21.77 You read that wonderful book Desire of Ages, 00:32:22.07\00:32:24.72 has to be the best book ever written on the life of Christ 00:32:24.92\00:32:27.78 by Ellen White, 00:32:27.89\00:32:28.96 she says that He stood there in the court and He watched 00:32:29.16\00:32:32.61 what was going on. He began to perceive. 00:32:32.81\00:32:34.73 He saw the priests and their garments 00:32:34.93\00:32:37.68 and He saw the lamb and He saw the sacrifice 00:32:37.88\00:32:40.68 and He watched it all. He watched it all. 00:32:40.88\00:32:43.78 He watched it all and as He stood there 00:32:43.98\00:32:46.38 a young boy at age 12, all of the things that Mary 00:32:46.58\00:32:50.76 taught Him coalesced in His mind 00:32:50.96\00:32:54.72 and He said: "Wait a minute. 00:32:54.92\00:32:56.84 This is Me. " 00:32:58.70\00:33:00.87 "This is all about Me. " 00:33:02.43\00:33:04.48 "This is the stuff that My mother taught me. " 00:33:06.01\00:33:10.99 And at that moment He caught it. 00:33:11.30\00:33:15.77 He understood that He was the Lamb of God 00:33:17.23\00:33:19.72 slain from the foundation of the world. 00:33:19.92\00:33:22.88 Mary taught it 00:33:23.08\00:33:25.86 but it was in the temple that Jesus caught it 00:33:26.06\00:33:30.14 and began to ask questions. And the Pharisees said: 00:33:30.44\00:33:34.77 "Who is this kid? " 00:33:34.97\00:33:37.72 "He didn't go to our schools. " 00:33:39.86\00:33:41.58 "I didn't teach Him. " 00:33:41.78\00:33:45.20 "Where'd He get this stuff? " 00:33:45.40\00:33:47.88 He got it through His mother from God. 00:33:50.30\00:33:55.42 I say again: giving truth to people 00:33:58.70\00:34:02.71 is risky business. 00:34:02.91\00:34:05.68 And putting truth in the hands of frail human beings 00:34:05.88\00:34:09.78 is risky. When God called a people, He called Abraham. 00:34:10.08\00:34:14.77 And Abraham caught it... Sarah didn't. 00:34:15.06\00:34:20.08 Right off the bat, 50 per cent of the church doesn't get it. 00:34:20.28\00:34:23.71 Abraham caught it; Sarah laughed. 00:34:26.66\00:34:30.00 Didn't get it. 00:34:30.30\00:34:32.97 And that singular lack of faith has produced issues 00:34:38.65\00:34:42.52 that we are wrestling with to this very day 00:34:42.72\00:34:45.37 in the Middle East. 00:34:45.57\00:34:47.35 And the truth is, brothers and sisters, 00:34:49.36\00:34:51.40 except for a very short time 00:34:51.60\00:34:54.68 Israel as a nation - though she taught it - 00:34:54.88\00:35:00.41 never caught it. 00:35:00.71\00:35:03.11 Never caught it. 00:35:03.41\00:35:04.98 They could spew it out. 00:35:05.18\00:35:07.46 I've got a Mishnah this thick that says they knew 00:35:07.66\00:35:11.51 how to teach it. They just never caught it. 00:35:11.71\00:35:15.68 Never really understood. 00:35:17.85\00:35:20.40 And history has shown, indeed is showing, 00:35:20.60\00:35:23.27 that when you have a group of people, a remnant, 00:35:23.37\00:35:25.80 a clan... call it what you will... 00:35:26.00\00:35:29.14 oft times everybody in the remnant 00:35:29.34\00:35:31.98 is not in the remnant. 00:35:32.18\00:35:34.50 Um-hmm. 00:35:36.69\00:35:38.29 Everybody in the remnant is not in the remnant... 00:35:40.02\00:35:44.60 and Satan knows that. 00:35:44.80\00:35:48.89 He knows that everybody in this room 00:35:49.19\00:35:54.19 is not in Jesus. 00:35:54.39\00:35:56.90 He knows that. 00:36:02.63\00:36:04.46 Tell you who else knows. 00:36:04.76\00:36:06.46 Jesus knows. 00:36:06.66\00:36:08.64 You may or may not know. 00:36:08.84\00:36:11.94 Um-hmm. 00:36:12.24\00:36:14.88 Don't look at me... 00:36:16.57\00:36:18.69 look at Jesus. 00:36:19.29\00:36:21.53 That's your problem: looking at me. Look at Him. 00:36:21.83\00:36:25.89 Satan knows everybody in the remnant is not in the remnant. 00:36:26.19\00:36:30.81 And as it was in ancient Israel so it is in latter-day Israel. 00:36:33.24\00:36:37.62 Everybody in the remnant is not in the remnant. 00:36:37.65\00:36:40.48 There is no guarantee that everybody in the world, 00:36:40.68\00:36:43.19 everybody in the church, 00:36:43.29\00:36:44.29 everybody watching tonight, 00:36:44.39\00:36:45.81 everybody in this room is in the remnant. 00:36:46.01\00:36:49.19 Because I say again: everybody in the remnant 00:36:49.39\00:36:52.16 is not in the remnant. 00:36:52.36\00:36:54.76 In other words, everybody in the church 00:36:58.05\00:37:01.61 is not necessarily in Christ. 00:37:01.92\00:37:06.35 And everybody in Christ may not be in the church... 00:37:09.37\00:37:15.23 yet. 00:37:15.43\00:37:17.61 Matthew chapter 13 verse 30 00:37:21.70\00:37:24.86 the Bible says: "Let the wheat and tares grow together" 00:37:25.06\00:37:28.06 which presupposes that some of us are wheat 00:37:28.27\00:37:32.71 and are growing together. 00:37:39.23\00:37:41.08 Amen! 00:37:41.38\00:37:43.34 And that's the way it's supposed to be. 00:37:43.54\00:37:45.10 And it's not your job to pluck up wheat 00:37:45.30\00:37:48.92 or tares... because you don't know. 00:37:49.12\00:37:52.59 And in your grabbin' 00:37:52.80\00:37:57.02 So the Bible says: "Let the wheat and tares grow together. " 00:37:57.32\00:38:03.26 Now why does it say that? 00:38:03.46\00:38:04.68 It says that because there are some tares in the church 00:38:04.88\00:38:08.40 right along with the wheat. 00:38:08.60\00:38:09.94 Amen. 00:38:10.14\00:38:12.34 So just glance at the person the other side of you. 00:38:12.54\00:38:16.21 Don't stare... that'd be impolite. 00:38:17.37\00:38:19.07 Wheat and tares growing together. 00:38:23.06\00:38:24.69 Amen? 00:38:24.89\00:38:26.97 Some are saints; some are aints. 00:38:27.37\00:38:32.92 Wheat and tares is remnant theology 00:38:35.70\00:38:38.39 because a dividing line, a judgment has been made. 00:38:38.60\00:38:41.95 Some are in; some are out. 00:38:42.15\00:38:43.25 That's remnant theology. 00:38:43.45\00:38:44.77 Those of us who are in the church and in Christ 00:38:45.07\00:38:48.81 are the true remnant. That's the faithful remnant 00:38:49.01\00:38:51.90 or the remnant within the remnant. 00:38:52.10\00:38:53.82 Remember I said the remnant can exist 00:38:54.02\00:38:57.42 coincidentally, sequentially, or at the same time. 00:38:57.62\00:39:03.25 The faithful remnant is the remnant within the remnant. 00:39:04.64\00:39:07.99 Or the faithful remnant in the eschatological remnant, 00:39:09.52\00:39:13.87 which is the latter-day manifestation 00:39:14.82\00:39:16.51 of the historical remnant. 00:39:16.71\00:39:19.19 You want to know who your Daddy is? 00:39:20.52\00:39:25.20 Remnant of what? 00:39:28.71\00:39:30.89 Then go with me to Hebrews chapter 11. 00:39:31.49\00:39:35.36 My wife, Irma, is sitting back there. 00:39:37.18\00:39:40.15 She has watched me write sermons. 00:39:40.35\00:39:42.36 She knows every now and again 00:39:42.66\00:39:44.71 in the middle of a sermon I will get up and just walk 00:39:44.91\00:39:46.94 around the room. 00:39:47.04\00:39:48.60 Just can't sit down. 00:39:48.91\00:39:50.61 I'll get up and just shake. 00:39:50.81\00:39:53.22 I'll just walk around the dining room table. 00:39:57.51\00:39:59.49 She's seen me doing that many, many times. 00:39:59.69\00:40:01.20 When I hit this, this was a walking time. 00:40:02.46\00:40:06.22 Hebrews chapter 11 verse 32. 00:40:07.40\00:40:11.83 This is the who's your Daddy answer. 00:40:12.03\00:40:14.40 I'm at verse 32. 00:40:23.26\00:40:25.36 "And what more shall I say? 00:40:25.66\00:40:27.94 For time would fail me to tell of Gideon, 00:40:28.14\00:40:31.99 and Barak and Samson 00:40:32.19\00:40:35.57 and Jephthah. Also of David and Samuel 00:40:35.77\00:40:39.78 and the prophets, who through faith 00:40:39.98\00:40:44.28 subdued kingdoms, worked righteousness, 00:40:44.48\00:40:48.59 obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, 00:40:48.79\00:40:53.14 quenched the violence of fire, 00:40:53.34\00:40:56.02 escaped the edge of the sword, 00:40:56.22\00:40:58.51 out of weakness, praise God, were made strong; 00:40:58.71\00:41:02.25 became valiant in battle, 00:41:02.45\00:41:04.87 turned to flight the armies of aliens. 00:41:05.07\00:41:08.03 Women received their dead raised to life again. " 00:41:08.23\00:41:11.67 Praise God. 00:41:11.88\00:41:13.25 "Others were tortured, not accepting deliverance 00:41:13.45\00:41:18.88 that they might obtain a better resurrection. " 00:41:19.08\00:41:23.56 Hallelujah! 00:41:23.76\00:41:25.07 "Still others had trials of mockings and scourgings, 00:41:25.27\00:41:28.31 yes, of chains and imprisonment. 00:41:28.51\00:41:31.28 They were stoned; they were sawed in two; 00:41:31.48\00:41:36.11 were tempted; were slain with the sword. 00:41:36.31\00:41:40.74 They wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins, 00:41:40.94\00:41:46.67 being destitute, afflicted, 00:41:46.87\00:41:50.34 tormented... 00:41:50.54\00:41:52.64 of whom the world was not worthy. 00:41:52.84\00:41:57.83 They wandered in deserts 00:41:58.03\00:42:01.22 and mountains, in dens and caves of the earth. 00:42:01.42\00:42:05.91 All these having obtained 00:42:06.11\00:42:10.21 a good testimony through faith 00:42:10.41\00:42:13.30 did not receive the promise. " 00:42:13.50\00:42:15.92 That, ladies and gentlemen... 00:42:17.00\00:42:19.22 those are your spiritual progenitors. 00:42:19.42\00:42:24.60 That's the heritage 00:42:25.00\00:42:27.23 from which we get remnant theology. 00:42:27.24\00:42:31.89 It is their blood 00:42:32.19\00:42:36.12 spiritually that flows through our veins. 00:42:36.32\00:42:39.84 We are their progeny. 00:42:40.04\00:42:43.87 Those are the ones who went before 00:42:44.07\00:42:47.75 who set the example. When we say remnant 00:42:47.96\00:42:52.35 these are the ones that we are tied to. 00:42:52.65\00:42:56.63 You know, I think sometimes... 00:42:57.03\00:42:58.73 Irma and I were talking about this the other night... 00:42:58.93\00:43:00.90 You know one of the best times to have a good conversation 00:43:01.00\00:43:03.55 with your wife is when you're laying in bed, 00:43:03.75\00:43:06.17 day's over, and you're just beginning to talk stuff. 00:43:06.37\00:43:09.44 One of the things I said to her the other night... 00:43:10.91\00:43:13.20 we may have still been in the dining room... 00:43:13.41\00:43:16.78 "I wonder if I could have taken it. " 00:43:16.98\00:43:21.53 You ever think about that? 00:43:23.12\00:43:24.89 I wonder if I could have taken it? 00:43:26.28\00:43:29.57 You're in an arena 00:43:32.25\00:43:34.81 and all you've got to say is: "I give" 00:43:35.02\00:43:39.05 and they'll pull that lion back who's approaching you. 00:43:39.25\00:43:43.68 Or a tiger or a leopard. I don't even like house cats! 00:43:43.98\00:43:49.24 We had one for a little while. 00:43:51.11\00:43:53.49 Nope. 00:43:54.95\00:43:57.08 You ever think about that? 00:43:59.12\00:44:00.84 I wonder if I could have taken it? 00:44:02.28\00:44:04.53 I don't know if I could have. 00:44:04.73\00:44:09.10 Roman dungeon, living in your own filth, 00:44:09.30\00:44:12.88 the lash, the whip, torture. 00:44:13.08\00:44:18.18 The Inquisition. 00:44:19.81\00:44:21.36 Having my eyes plucked out. 00:44:22.88\00:44:25.05 Fingernails ripped and torn. 00:44:25.25\00:44:28.17 The tortures of the Middle Ages. 00:44:28.37\00:44:31.41 Being burned at the stake 00:44:31.61\00:44:33.04 or stretched out on the rack. 00:44:33.35\00:44:36.47 Or nails driven through your fingers... 00:44:39.30\00:44:41.60 all because you love Jesus. 00:44:41.81\00:44:43.62 I wonder. I wonder sometimes. 00:44:45.32\00:44:48.76 Could I have taken it? 00:44:48.96\00:44:50.82 But they did. 00:44:56.08\00:44:57.71 And they loved their lives not unto death. 00:44:59.17\00:45:01.78 I've read Fox's Book of Martyrs 00:45:01.98\00:45:04.29 where Polycarp, Bishop of Smyrna, 00:45:05.69\00:45:07.67 praised the name of God. And so they made a metal chair 00:45:07.87\00:45:11.04 and heated it to red-hot glowing 00:45:11.24\00:45:13.61 and then for the name of Jesus they sat him in it. 00:45:16.23\00:45:20.28 Story about a man - I can't remember his name. 00:45:24.91\00:45:26.58 I heard it just the other day. 00:45:26.78\00:45:27.80 Was in England. 00:45:28.00\00:45:30.07 Part of the Protestant Reformation. 00:45:30.37\00:45:32.68 His life was threatened and he recanted. 00:45:32.88\00:45:36.39 Wrote a bunch of things against the church 00:45:36.59\00:45:38.32 and became a titular Catholic. 00:45:38.52\00:45:40.86 And then he changed his mind 00:45:42.14\00:45:44.05 because the Spirit of God touched him. 00:45:44.15\00:45:45.55 And he said: "I can't do this. 00:45:45.85\00:45:48.09 I'm a Protestant. I believe in Jesus. " 00:45:48.29\00:45:51.54 And the Catholics burned him at the stake. 00:45:51.74\00:45:54.58 And he said: "I'm going to put the hand that wrote against 00:45:54.78\00:45:58.69 Jesus in the fire first. " 00:45:58.89\00:46:00.36 Volitionally he put that hand in first. 00:46:00.56\00:46:03.84 I don't know if I could do that... 00:46:05.90\00:46:07.68 I just don't know. 00:46:10.34\00:46:11.91 But this one thing I do know: 00:46:13.93\00:46:16.15 I know that every second, every minute, 00:46:16.36\00:46:22.11 every hour of every day 00:46:22.31\00:46:25.20 we - you and I - are under an attack. 00:46:25.40\00:46:29.88 A persistent, focused, insistent, 00:46:30.95\00:46:34.85 incessant, unrelenting, 00:46:35.06\00:46:37.56 insidious, virulent, 00:46:37.76\00:46:40.51 unmitigated, malignant assault of the devil. 00:46:40.71\00:46:45.37 And we will overcome today 00:46:45.57\00:46:48.95 like our brothers and sisters overcame years ago. 00:46:49.15\00:46:53.03 By the same faith we will overcome 00:46:53.23\00:46:58.63 as the saints of old overcame 00:46:58.83\00:47:01.87 for they are our brothers. Amen. 00:47:02.07\00:47:05.96 Abel is my brother. 00:47:06.16\00:47:07.56 And Seth is my brother. 00:47:07.76\00:47:09.52 And Noah is my brother. 00:47:09.72\00:47:11.37 And Abraham is my brother. 00:47:11.57\00:47:13.24 And Isaac, and Jacob, and Joseph. 00:47:13.44\00:47:15.45 And Samson, and Gideon, and Abraham. 00:47:15.65\00:47:17.80 And Moses, Caleb, and Joshua. 00:47:18.00\00:47:20.22 Josiah, Elijah, Elisha, the faithful kings. 00:47:20.42\00:47:24.47 And my sisters Rahab and Ruth 00:47:24.67\00:47:29.13 and Naomi and Esther and Elizabeth. 00:47:29.33\00:47:32.77 And Mary and Deborah and Dorcas and Miriam. 00:47:32.97\00:47:36.97 And Matthew and Mark and John and Luke 00:47:37.17\00:47:39.90 and Saul named Paul and the apostolic fathers. 00:47:40.10\00:47:43.85 And 1,000 members of the family that I will never know. 00:47:44.05\00:47:48.19 And the unknown soldier. 00:47:48.39\00:47:50.05 Tens of thousands killed by Nero. 00:47:50.35\00:47:53.35 Hundreds of thousands killed by Diocletian. 00:47:53.38\00:47:56.28 Millions killed by the Roman church in the Middle Ages 00:47:56.48\00:47:59.97 who we will only meet in paradise. 00:48:00.17\00:48:03.18 The Albigencies who were totally exterminated 00:48:03.39\00:48:06.73 from the face of the earth in the 12th and 13th centuries. 00:48:06.93\00:48:09.38 The Cathars, the Lollards, 00:48:09.58\00:48:11.48 driven nearly to extinction. 00:48:11.68\00:48:13.18 The Waldenses and Huguenots. 00:48:13.38\00:48:14.96 The Subbotniks in Russia, 00:48:15.16\00:48:16.62 The Goas in India. 00:48:16.82\00:48:18.01 Who all took the torture and loved their lives 00:48:18.21\00:48:22.99 not unto death. 00:48:23.19\00:48:24.76 How can I claim to be family members with them? 00:48:24.96\00:48:29.48 Very simple: different mother, 00:48:29.68\00:48:32.52 same Father. Amen. 00:48:32.72\00:48:35.57 They are mine because I am the remnant, 00:48:35.97\00:48:40.29 and victory for them is the same as victory for us. 00:48:40.69\00:48:46.62 The words of our testimony and the blood of the Lamb. 00:48:48.13\00:48:54.06 So now we go back and read that one text 00:48:54.26\00:48:59.18 that I omitted. Hebrews chapter 11 00:48:59.38\00:49:02.62 verses 39 and 40. 00:49:03.02\00:49:07.55 Thirty-nine and forty. 00:49:07.85\00:49:11.24 "All these having obtained a good testimony 00:49:12.87\00:49:17.51 through faith did not receive the promise. " 00:49:17.72\00:49:21.91 Now this is what makes God so good. 00:49:23.89\00:49:26.79 "God having provided something better for us 00:49:28.39\00:49:34.34 that they should not be made perfect 00:49:34.64\00:49:40.60 apart from us. " 00:49:40.81\00:49:42.35 Now the only reason you are not standing on your chairs 00:49:43.66\00:49:47.86 and swinging from this ceiling 00:49:48.26\00:49:53.17 is because one... you're too Methodist; 00:49:53.37\00:49:58.18 two... you haven't been trained right; 00:49:58.38\00:50:02.60 three... you don't understand what this text just said. 00:50:02.90\00:50:07.56 God is saying here as good and great 00:50:09.12\00:50:14.74 and marvelous and God-filled 00:50:14.94\00:50:17.88 as those saints of old were, 00:50:18.08\00:50:20.97 it's God's design that they don't get into glory 00:50:22.25\00:50:26.96 one second before you. 00:50:27.16\00:50:30.77 Amen. 00:50:31.07\00:50:32.28 They apart from us... not gonna get it. 00:50:32.58\00:50:37.70 God has determined we all go in together! 00:50:38.11\00:50:44.04 Amen? 00:50:44.24\00:50:45.67 That's why I know I'm the remnant. 00:50:45.97\00:50:47.82 Because God's holding them for me. 00:50:48.02\00:50:52.50 They without us? Not going to be made perfect. 00:50:55.85\00:51:01.31 Didn't receive the promise. 00:51:01.51\00:51:02.98 But one day the promise is coming 00:51:03.18\00:51:07.30 and we will go in together. 00:51:07.60\00:51:09.50 Now I've got to leave that and run to mission real quick 00:51:09.70\00:51:12.03 before my time gets away. 00:51:12.13\00:51:13.24 Mission is kind of simple 00:51:13.54\00:51:15.58 because our mission was given to us by Jesus. 00:51:15.88\00:51:18.55 Matthew 18:19-20. 00:51:18.95\00:51:20.99 "Go ye therefore... teach, preach, and baptize. " 00:51:21.19\00:51:23.92 Period. 00:51:24.22\00:51:25.57 That's just not the preacher's job, that's everybody's job. 00:51:25.67\00:51:28.41 Everybody can preach; everybody can teach. 00:51:28.61\00:51:30.93 And preaching is not just standing in the pulpit 00:51:31.13\00:51:32.84 yelling at folk. 00:51:33.04\00:51:34.47 Amen. 00:51:34.67\00:51:36.28 Preaching is telling what good thing God has done for you. 00:51:38.37\00:51:43.27 That's preaching. 00:51:43.57\00:51:45.46 Amen? And that's everybody's job. 00:51:45.66\00:51:48.94 Everybody's job. 00:51:49.35\00:51:50.92 Preach, teach, and baptize. 00:51:51.12\00:51:53.36 Now, why did Christ do that? 00:51:53.57\00:51:55.15 You've got to go to the verse before where He says 00:51:55.35\00:51:57.74 "All power is given to Me 00:51:57.94\00:52:01.78 and I'm giving it to you. " 00:52:01.98\00:52:04.32 You've got what you need to do what I've asked you to do. 00:52:04.52\00:52:08.86 Amen? Amen. 00:52:09.06\00:52:10.26 That's the gospel. 00:52:10.46\00:52:11.74 That's the gospel. 00:52:11.94\00:52:13.02 Time is going to get away from me. 00:52:13.12\00:52:14.44 Four reasons for the church: 00:52:14.64\00:52:15.83 David did a nice job, going to add to that. 00:52:16.13\00:52:17.74 Four reasons why the church exists: 00:52:17.94\00:52:19.16 1. Visible manifestation of the people of God. 00:52:19.36\00:52:21.85 God needed something visible... 00:52:22.05\00:52:23.64 because you've got 30,000 people saying "I'm here. " 00:52:23.84\00:52:26.94 30,000 people can't be hid. 00:52:27.44\00:52:32.45 So the church exists because God needed a visible 00:52:34.20\00:52:37.37 manifestation to draw people to. 00:52:37.48\00:52:39.03 2. Friendship, fellowship, information, encouragement, 00:52:39.23\00:52:42.33 and inspiration. You need to hang out with people 00:52:42.43\00:52:44.97 who think and act like you do. 00:52:45.17\00:52:46.71 Amen. I love going to Panama with my wife's family. 00:52:46.91\00:52:52.73 And I can do pretty good in Spanish one on one. 00:52:52.93\00:52:55.03 But when they get together at the table and everybody's 00:52:55.23\00:52:57.19 cracking jokes, I'm like "I'll see you when you land. " 00:52:57.29\00:53:01.14 I can't keep up. 00:53:02.94\00:53:04.40 So I'm looking for somebody to speak English. 00:53:04.70\00:53:07.15 Because my wife, bless her heart, speaks both languages 00:53:07.35\00:53:09.63 well. But when she finds somebody that speaks Spanish 00:53:09.73\00:53:12.34 lights out. 00:53:12.54\00:53:14.01 It's Spanish from now on. 00:53:14.21\00:53:15.92 So I'll see you when you land. I'll be here. 00:53:16.12\00:53:18.47 So one of the reason that it's called the church 00:53:18.67\00:53:20.36 is because we need the fortification that comes from 00:53:20.46\00:53:22.72 hanging out with people who think and act like you do. 00:53:22.92\00:53:25.04 Amen? That's what... fellowship is 00:53:25.24\00:53:27.35 an important part of worship. 00:53:27.55\00:53:29.29 An important part of being with the Lord. 00:53:29.49\00:53:31.53 All right. 3. Regularization of the gospel message. 00:53:31.73\00:53:35.29 Focus and synchronization 00:53:35.49\00:53:37.91 so that we're all preaching the same thing. 00:53:38.01\00:53:39.65 One of the good things about going to an Adventist church 00:53:39.85\00:53:41.44 anywhere in the world - those of you who travel, you know - 00:53:41.54\00:53:43.39 when you step into an Adventist church on Sabbath morning 00:53:43.40\00:53:46.20 anywhere on planet earth you pretty much know 00:53:46.41\00:53:48.08 what you're going to get. 00:53:48.18\00:53:49.21 Amen? It may not be in a language you can understand 00:53:49.41\00:53:53.83 but you know they're telling the truth. 00:53:54.03\00:53:55.51 Amen. Amen. 00:53:56.83\00:53:58.17 I used to... I used to... In fact, Yvonne Lewis 00:53:58.28\00:54:00.22 and I used to do a talk show on another channel. 00:54:00.42\00:54:02.22 For years... we kind of honed our skills. 00:54:02.42\00:54:05.30 When I came to 3ABN they talked about hosting a show. 00:54:05.50\00:54:07.94 They said: "Are you nervous? " I said: "Are you kidding? " 00:54:08.14\00:54:09.63 We used to talk to people... in the evangelical world 00:54:09.93\00:54:13.71 used to talk to their dead relatives and stuff. 00:54:13.81\00:54:15.34 You know, all that kind of stuff. 00:54:15.54\00:54:16.63 At 3ABN I could ask a question and have to... don't worry 00:54:16.83\00:54:18.80 about the answer. But on this other channel 00:54:18.90\00:54:21.00 we used to have to arm wrestle our guests 00:54:21.20\00:54:24.60 'cause they'd say something and as Christians we'd 00:54:24.80\00:54:27.37 have to find some nice way of kind of cleaning that up 00:54:27.48\00:54:30.89 'cause that aint the gospel and we couldn't leave it out there. 00:54:31.10\00:54:33.50 So it's nice to be around people who talk the same way 00:54:33.80\00:54:37.68 as you do. So when you go anywhere on planet earth 00:54:37.88\00:54:40.50 even if you can't speak the language 00:54:40.70\00:54:41.98 it's all right 'cause they're Seventh-day Adventist, 00:54:42.19\00:54:43.66 they're telling the truth. Amen. Amen. 00:54:43.76\00:54:46.43 So that's important. And number 4: 00:54:46.56\00:54:48.02 The launching pad for gospel mission. 00:54:48.32\00:54:50.72 The reason the church exists is because of mission. 00:54:50.93\00:54:53.90 Now, the mission of the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:54:54.10\00:54:56.73 is as easy as 1, 2, 3. I'm kind of speeding up 00:54:56.83\00:54:58.49 because time is getting away from me. 00:54:58.69\00:54:59.72 Revelation chapter 14 verses 6 through 12. 00:54:59.92\00:55:01.53 Those are the three angels' messages. 00:55:01.73\00:55:04.66 That's the mission of the church 00:55:05.62\00:55:06.94 and the early pioneers knew it. 00:55:07.14\00:55:08.88 1. "Fear God, give glory to Him 00:55:09.08\00:55:12.12 for the hour of... " These are the most solemn 00:55:12.32\00:55:16.95 and serious messages ever given to the world 00:55:17.15\00:55:20.86 because they are the last messages 00:55:21.06\00:55:23.80 ever given to the world. 00:55:24.00\00:55:25.32 And it is God's answer to the almost overwhelming 00:55:25.72\00:55:29.81 irresistible Satanic deception 00:55:29.91\00:55:32.16 that is and will sweep the world before Christ returns. 00:55:32.36\00:55:37.68 Matthew 24:24 gives that warning: 00:55:37.98\00:55:42.35 tells us that we've got to be in the Word and of the Word. 00:55:42.55\00:55:47.35 So message #1: "Fear God and give glory to Him 00:55:47.55\00:55:49.71 for the hour of His judgment is coming... " 00:55:49.91\00:55:52.57 Then message #2: 00:55:52.67\00:55:55.61 "Babylon is fallen.
