00:07:30.71\00:07:32.00 Thank you, thank you very much. 00:07:32.01\00:07:33.46 It's good to be here, you know I'm happy 00:07:33.47\00:07:35.27 to be a member of this church 00:07:35.28\00:07:36.64 that has a theology that believes 00:07:36.65\00:07:39.04 in the priesthood of believers. What does that mean? 00:07:39.05\00:07:42.50 What that means is, is that every person 00:07:42.51\00:07:45.48 who claims to be a Seventh-day Adventist 00:07:45.49\00:07:48.62 becomes a disciple and an ambassador of the gospel 00:07:48.63\00:07:51.85 and there is responsibility there. 00:07:51.86\00:07:54.83 You know I've had the privilege of traveling 00:07:54.84\00:07:57.32 to many, many places in the world. 00:07:57.33\00:07:59.16 And what a thrill it is to go there, 00:07:59.17\00:08:01.04 and to find that there are supporting ministries 00:08:01.05\00:08:03.93 who are partnering with the church. 00:08:03.94\00:08:06.15 Now, you know, when you are in North America, 00:08:06.16\00:08:08.14 you have a lot of things taking place. 00:08:08.15\00:08:10.67 But when you are in countries like Mongolia, 00:08:10.68\00:08:15.33 you are just happy when people come. 00:08:15.34\00:08:17.95 I remember at when I first came 00:08:17.96\00:08:19.83 to the General Conference in 1990 00:08:19.84\00:08:21.86 and they gave me this list of unentered countries. 00:08:21.87\00:08:25.45 And I remember looking at the list, 00:08:25.46\00:08:27.16 and we were trying to decide, 00:08:27.17\00:08:28.49 well, how in the world we were gonna go about this? 00:08:28.50\00:08:30.65 You know what a, what a joy it was to realize 00:08:30.66\00:08:35.06 that there were supporting ministers 00:08:35.07\00:08:36.36 that were partnering with us. 00:08:36.37\00:08:37.88 I remember getting off of the airplane 00:08:37.89\00:08:40.68 and being met by a supporting ministry in Mongolia. 00:08:40.69\00:08:44.32 And I think probably most of you know 00:08:44.33\00:08:45.88 that story and they're the ones 00:08:45.89\00:08:48.05 who started the church there. 00:08:48.06\00:08:49.50 They develop the literature, they did the Bible studies, 00:08:49.51\00:08:52.19 they organize the church. 00:08:52.20\00:08:53.66 And what a thrill it was to partner with them. 00:08:53.67\00:08:58.08 I know that as you walk through the booth area, 00:08:58.09\00:09:03.24 you can look at all of the supporting ministries. 00:09:03.25\00:09:05.95 I want to assure you that 00:09:05.96\00:09:09.40 the Seventh-day Adventist Church values 00:09:09.41\00:09:12.10 the resource of ASI and the ministries 00:09:12.11\00:09:17.52 that are partners in this initiative. 00:09:17.53\00:09:20.51 I also want to thank you on behalf of the church. 00:09:20.52\00:09:23.77 And you know I believe that commonly we believe 00:09:23.78\00:09:25.60 that Jesus is coming again. Thank you for your commitment. 00:09:25.61\00:09:28.25 Thank you for your support. 00:09:28.26\00:09:32.07 Thank you very much Elder Pedersen and Ryan. 00:09:32.08\00:09:35.05 We are a part of the church, we serve willingly, 00:09:35.06\00:09:38.70 we just have a different paycheck, 00:09:38.71\00:09:40.16 our paycheck comes from the Lord in some other way. 00:09:40.17\00:09:43.51 Stay tune this afternoon, we have some more 00:09:43.52\00:09:46.64 good interviews, some more good music 00:09:46.65\00:09:48.64 and wonderful inspiration to follow. 00:09:48.65\00:09:53.33 Joel and Joyce Meyer's have chosen 00:09:53.34\00:09:57.10 as a family to serve in the Navajo nation 00:09:57.11\00:10:00.51 in Monument Valley, where our denomination 00:10:00.52\00:10:02.81 used to operate a hospital. 00:10:02.82\00:10:04.93 What is it that prepared you folks to be able 00:10:04.94\00:10:07.35 to serve in this unique mission for the Navajo people? 00:10:07.36\00:10:11.15 We spent seven years in the country of Nepal, 00:10:11.16\00:10:15.33 planting the church there among the Nepali people. 00:10:15.34\00:10:19.68 Oh, what kind of work did you do 00:10:19.69\00:10:22.83 that was similar to what you're doing now among the Navajo? 00:10:22.84\00:10:26.70 We were doing health and medical machinery work 00:10:26.71\00:10:32.17 out in the mountains and also training 00:10:32.18\00:10:37.55 in agriculture and development in that area. 00:10:37.56\00:10:43.54 Yeah, what are the particular needs of the Navajo people? 00:10:43.55\00:10:47.34 Do you're working with now? 00:10:47.35\00:10:49.61 There is huge need in the area of health, 00:10:49.62\00:10:54.77 two-thirds of adult Navajo's 00:10:54.78\00:10:57.94 have type II diabetes, two-thirds. 00:10:57.95\00:11:03.22 And there are also, there is a high rate 00:11:03.23\00:11:08.50 of addictions to alcohol and other substances 00:11:08.51\00:11:13.48 that and also the needs in their families 00:11:13.49\00:11:18.21 to understand how to raise their children 00:11:18.22\00:11:21.78 is also a huge need. 00:11:21.79\00:11:25.50 What was that depressed your family to come 00:11:25.51\00:11:28.73 and serve in the Navajo's? 00:11:28.74\00:11:32.30 We, in Nepal we had worked 00:11:32.31\00:11:37.13 where they were Mongolian tribes 00:11:37.14\00:11:40.38 and the Navajo's have their roots in Mongolia. 00:11:40.39\00:11:45.38 They came across the Bering Strait 00:11:45.39\00:11:47.63 and so we saw many similarities 00:11:47.64\00:11:52.42 and after we had come back and taken 00:11:52.43\00:11:55.17 some training at Uchee Pines. 00:11:55.18\00:11:57.34 Our children just felt a immediate bond 00:11:57.35\00:12:03.38 with the Navajo people as we traveled 00:12:03.39\00:12:05.64 through Navajo country. 00:12:05.65\00:12:07.91 So you really allow this family service 00:12:07.92\00:12:12.04 to be a complete family unit. 00:12:12.05\00:12:14.76 I mean you didn't just make the decision say, 00:12:14.77\00:12:17.29 hey kids, we're going here. 00:12:17.30\00:12:19.12 That's right. We actually, 00:12:19.13\00:12:20.86 we're praying together and actually when I-- 00:12:20.87\00:12:27.03 when we visited the desolate area of Southern Utah, 00:12:27.04\00:12:32.30 I'm really a gardener and agriculturist at heart, 00:12:32.31\00:12:36.32 it was so barren, oh I just, 00:12:36.33\00:12:40.23 I don't think I could possibly come here. 00:12:40.24\00:12:44.14 But my girls, they were just convinced 00:12:44.15\00:12:47.34 that this is where God wanted us to be. 00:12:47.35\00:12:49.90 And then of course I did discover 00:12:49.91\00:12:51.77 that you could grow things real well there also. 00:12:51.78\00:12:55.56 Well, a year for, a year or two from now, 00:12:55.57\00:12:57.78 how would you picture, 00:12:57.79\00:12:59.43 what your ministry is gonna look like? 00:12:59.44\00:13:04.57 I'd like my wife to be able to share little bit about that. 00:13:04.58\00:13:08.24 Well, things are really starting to happen there, 00:13:08.25\00:13:11.02 we're really excited about that. We have things today, 00:13:11.03\00:13:13.90 Octagon Health Centre is about where 00:13:13.91\00:13:16.87 it's going to be opening shortly. 00:13:16.88\00:13:18.82 And so we'll have that with the treatments 00:13:18.83\00:13:22.56 for the diabetes and various diseases there. 00:13:22.57\00:13:26.16 We found that it really is helpful in reaching 00:13:26.17\00:13:29.96 the traditional type people. 00:13:29.97\00:13:31.96 And we also are planning a greenhouse 00:13:31.97\00:13:34.69 and a garden and we're also going to 00:13:34.70\00:13:39.09 be doing some things to like building various things 00:13:39.10\00:13:43.86 that can be sold there, that will help with the industry 00:13:43.87\00:13:46.81 and also the school, is really progressing there, 00:13:46.82\00:13:50.46 we're getting more students 00:13:50.47\00:13:51.55 and we are having more programs with that. 00:13:51.56\00:13:54.27 Did you say your health center is an Octagon? 00:13:54.28\00:13:57.49 Yes, that's the shape that the, all the healing places 00:13:57.50\00:14:01.33 on the Navajo nation are either Hogans or Octagons. 00:14:01.34\00:14:05.06 And so when we built it, we decided to go 00:14:05.07\00:14:07.28 with the Octagon shape, 00:14:07.29\00:14:08.30 so it will be comfortable for them. 00:14:08.31\00:14:10.91 Have you had community involvement and its helping -- 00:14:10.92\00:14:14.22 Yes, we had. 00:14:15.96\00:14:18.21 One of our local gentlemen that is really good with stucco. 00:14:18.22\00:14:22.86 He came around just around the time 00:14:22.87\00:14:24.74 that we needed to do the stucco. 00:14:24.75\00:14:26.95 And I was not familiar with doing stucco, 00:14:26.96\00:14:29.86 because I learned back in the east and he said, 00:14:29.87\00:14:34.41 when are you gonna do that stucco? I said, 00:14:34.42\00:14:36.58 well, we really need to get it done. 00:14:36.59\00:14:38.03 But I said, all of the work has been done 00:14:38.04\00:14:40.03 with volunteers and he left and few days later 00:14:40.04\00:14:44.21 he came back he said, 00:14:44.22\00:14:45.74 I really want to help you with that, 00:14:45.75\00:14:47.22 I'm gonna be here on Monday. 00:14:47.23\00:14:49.37 Toward the end, he helped us for three weeks, 00:14:49.38\00:14:52.03 toward the end of that time, he, I asked him, 00:14:52.04\00:14:56.19 Carl, why are doing this? He said well, 00:14:56.20\00:14:58.44 I can see that you are here to help my community 00:14:58.45\00:15:03.27 and I just want to be a part of it. 00:15:03.28\00:15:05.47 How did your children been able to take an active part? 00:15:05.48\00:15:08.24 They've been able to help, Joanna, here on the left 00:15:08.25\00:15:12.20 has been teaching cello and she also works 00:15:12.21\00:15:15.10 with the health program and a camp program. 00:15:15.11\00:15:17.48 Mark has been working with the Hay Ministry 00:15:17.49\00:15:19.95 and the people there just love him. 00:15:19.96\00:15:21.54 They say, he really response the best, 00:15:21.55\00:15:23.49 they just really enjoy that, that's Mark. 00:15:23.50\00:15:25.76 And then Joella is going to be leading out 00:15:25.77\00:15:28.54 in our health center. 00:15:28.55\00:15:30.91 And I wanted to just share a story real quick about Loretta, 00:15:30.92\00:15:34.27 she, one of our friends here, she came 00:15:34.28\00:15:40.03 and she was getting hay and then we, 00:15:40.04\00:15:41.76 when we were doing health programs, 00:15:41.77\00:15:43.73 we had a lot of mission trips coming 00:15:43.74\00:15:45.36 that wanted to get close to the people. 00:15:45.37\00:15:47.64 And so we said, let's do something different, 00:15:47.65\00:15:49.51 let's take the groups out into their homes. 00:15:49.52\00:15:51.84 And let them get acquainted with the people 00:15:51.85\00:15:53.68 and help them on the home level. 00:15:53.69\00:15:55.55 And so we created seminars to do that way 00:15:55.56\00:15:58.34 and we had them focused on hydrotherapy, 00:15:58.35\00:16:00.14 cooking schools, health education 00:16:00.15\00:16:02.64 and sharing spiritual things with them. 00:16:02.65\00:16:04.50 Loretta was one of the homes, we went out there. 00:16:04.51\00:16:06.87 And when we were doing the treatments, 00:16:06.88\00:16:09.22 now she is a staunch traditional 00:16:09.23\00:16:11.00 and that means they follow the traditional Navajo customs. 00:16:11.01\00:16:16.39 And they are not really favorable to Christianity. 00:16:16.40\00:16:18.97 So when they did the hard foot bash she said, 00:16:18.98\00:16:21.22 wow! It just like the medicine man, 00:16:21.23\00:16:25.15 you know, they dig a hole in the sand, 00:16:25.16\00:16:26.62 put your feet in the hard ash, wrap you up, 00:16:26.63\00:16:29.36 put clothes on your head when you sweat. 00:16:29.37\00:16:31.35 When we did the fermentations, 00:16:31.36\00:16:33.11 they said the same thing you're just like the medicine man. 00:16:33.12\00:16:36.14 And it has been a real born in experience 00:16:36.15\00:16:38.72 and even the traditional people in the community, 00:16:38.73\00:16:41.89 now they hear about that and they say we'll even send 00:16:41.90\00:16:44.10 our kids to your school, because you are like one of us. 00:16:44.11\00:16:46.81 The health message is the opening wedge that enters, 00:16:46.82\00:16:49.64 that opens their hearts. 00:16:49.65\00:16:51.67 They have lots of stories on how they have been 00:16:51.68\00:16:54.66 impacting lives in Navajo people. 00:16:54.67\00:16:56.59 So take him aside as you see them walk in the hall, 00:16:56.60\00:16:59.53 incidentally could you use anymore musical instruments 00:16:59.54\00:17:02.48 in your music program? It would be a real blessing. 00:17:02.49\00:17:04.95 We don't have enough for everyone 00:17:04.96\00:17:06.05 to have one right now, and if you have an extra one, 00:17:06.06\00:17:09.08 you would like to share especially cellos and violins 00:17:09.09\00:17:11.64 and perhaps some flutes, we'll be delighted. 00:17:11.65\00:17:13.98 Thank you very much Meyer family. Bless you. 00:17:13.99\00:17:17.40 Dr. John Torquato is a Loma Linda graduate 00:17:22.11\00:17:26.43 class of 1998. 00:17:26.44\00:17:28.49 And he is board certified in family medicine. 00:17:28.50\00:17:31.90 The patients flock to his clinic at Hayden, 00:17:31.91\00:17:36.03 Hayden Lake in Idaho close to Coeur d'Alene. 00:17:36.04\00:17:39.05 And they come to learn about better health. 00:17:39.06\00:17:42.26 But the unique way that they have been sharing 00:17:42.27\00:17:44.89 Christ in the marketplace is something 00:17:44.90\00:17:46.99 you want to know about. 00:17:47.00\00:17:48.41 And he is joined today by Pastor Doug Venn, 00:17:48.42\00:17:51.13 who is his pastor and partner in this operation. 00:17:51.14\00:17:54.14 Dr. John, please tell me, how you determine 00:17:54.15\00:17:57.89 to become a medical missionary in this country? 00:17:57.90\00:18:01.15 When I was in high school, 00:18:01.16\00:18:02.78 I met a man who gave me Bible studies. 00:18:02.79\00:18:05.42 He was a Seventh-day Adventist physician 00:18:05.43\00:18:06.99 and he came to give Bible studies in my home. 00:18:07.00\00:18:09.92 And I determine to be like him one day. 00:18:09.93\00:18:13.33 Well is he the person that contributed directly 00:18:13.34\00:18:16.16 to your conversion story then? 00:18:16.17\00:18:17.62 He is the man who brought me to Christ 00:18:17.63\00:18:19.46 and he was a man who became my father-in-law years later. 00:18:19.47\00:18:26.63 How does your pastor fit into the community mix 00:18:26.64\00:18:29.16 when you are invited to come and speak? 00:18:29.17\00:18:30.93 Well, whenever we have an invitation to come 00:18:30.94\00:18:34.37 to the community, I would let the community leaders, 00:18:34.38\00:18:37.00 or the people in community know, 00:18:37.01\00:18:38.69 I would be happy to come and talk to you, 00:18:38.70\00:18:40.14 but my pastor goes with me. 00:18:40.15\00:18:42.19 For instance, the pastor one day he said you know, 00:18:42.20\00:18:45.83 I really like to get a chance to meet 00:18:45.84\00:18:48.66 some of the fraternities 00:18:48.67\00:18:50.41 at the Washington State University campus. 00:18:50.42\00:18:56.01 And it's really kind of hard to get in there sometimes, and-- 00:18:56.02\00:18:59.26 So they don't like to hear the preacher, do they? 00:18:59.27\00:19:02.25 At times they don't. 00:19:02.26\00:19:03.71 And so, I calls one of the fraternities 00:19:03.72\00:19:06.09 and I said would you guys like to have an HIV lecture 00:19:06.10\00:19:09.33 from our local family practice physician. 00:19:09.34\00:19:11.67 They said, what's the cost? And I said it's free. 00:19:11.68\00:19:14.92 They said, oh yeah. And I said okay. 00:19:14.93\00:19:17.06 But I'm gonna send my pastor, 00:19:17.07\00:19:18.75 his day job is a pastor but at night time 00:19:18.76\00:19:20.69 he does my audio visual stuff. 00:19:20.70\00:19:22.23 And they said fine, send him over. 00:19:22.24\00:19:24.66 I went over and I sent Pastor Doug to this fraternity 00:19:24.67\00:19:28.85 he had a chance to setup the equipment, 00:19:28.86\00:19:30.92 spend some time with the fraternity guys 00:19:30.93\00:19:33.20 that were hanging around. 00:19:33.21\00:19:34.78 And then I did an HIV lecture 00:19:34.79\00:19:36.07 that was just a hard hitting graphic lecture. 00:19:36.08\00:19:38.84 These guys have like the deer-in-the-headlights 00:19:38.85\00:19:41.28 look in their face. 00:19:41.29\00:19:42.95 And afterwards I started taking questions. 00:19:42.96\00:19:45.78 And of course eventually we came around 00:19:45.79\00:19:47.73 to some questions on relationship. 00:19:47.74\00:19:48.98 And I said, you know, I happen to have somebody 00:19:48.99\00:19:50.61 here who is an expert 00:19:50.62\00:19:52.23 on relationships within the family. 00:19:52.24\00:19:54.21 Let me have Pastor Doug Venn come and talk to you 00:19:54.22\00:19:56.80 about his perspective on this 00:19:56.81\00:19:59.46 and thus Pastor Venn was able to take over. 00:19:59.47\00:20:01.68 That's right, and it was so exciting to see 00:20:01.69\00:20:04.19 how the health message was able to open the doors 00:20:04.20\00:20:07.77 and we were able to minister practically to these, 00:20:07.78\00:20:11.03 practically, you know, parting hard hitting young adults 00:20:11.04\00:20:14.92 there at Washington State University 00:20:14.93\00:20:16.53 and University of Idaho. 00:20:16.54\00:20:18.25 You know, I have found that people do business 00:20:18.26\00:20:21.15 with people they like. 00:20:21.16\00:20:23.01 And when they can get acquainted with the pastor, 00:20:23.02\00:20:25.21 that would have been completely outside 00:20:25.22\00:20:27.13 their social spirit, it's a unique opportunity. 00:20:27.14\00:20:30.46 That's right and we even had a chance to, 00:20:30.47\00:20:32.31 I got to, through that relationship, 00:20:32.32\00:20:34.79 there was a one young adult couple where I got to do 00:20:34.80\00:20:37.61 counseling with and then we packed the church 00:20:37.62\00:20:40.26 with a whole bunch of Greeks and that was an awesome 00:20:40.27\00:20:42.74 time to preach the gospel there at that wedding. 00:20:42.75\00:20:47.93 What kinds of organizations quickly 00:20:47.94\00:20:50.23 have you had a chance to minister too in the community? 00:20:50.24\00:20:54.10 Well, after Doug taught me about the fraternities, 00:20:54.11\00:20:57.40 one day he was just musing. 00:20:57.41\00:20:59.77 I'd like to be able to talk to 00:20:59.78\00:21:00.75 some other people in the community, 00:21:00.76\00:21:02.82 who are community leaders. 00:21:02.83\00:21:04.42 So I called up the city hall 00:21:04.43\00:21:05.79 in the county commissioner's office and I said, 00:21:05.80\00:21:08.14 would you guys like to have 00:21:08.15\00:21:09.63 a corporate level wellness program? 00:21:09.64\00:21:11.71 And they said well, sure we would be, 00:21:11.72\00:21:13.34 but what's the cost? And I said, well, it's free. 00:21:13.35\00:21:15.97 And they said well, yeah, come on over. 00:21:15.98\00:21:18.41 And I said well, before I come over I got to tell you, 00:21:18.42\00:21:20.89 my pastor goes with wherever I go, 00:21:20.90\00:21:22.45 he is my audio visual guy and so he is going to come 00:21:22.46\00:21:25.32 setup a booth for me, we're gonna do a health 00:21:25.33\00:21:27.44 and wellness program for you. 00:21:27.45\00:21:29.11 They said okay, we are not sure but okay. 00:21:29.12\00:21:31.81 So we went over to the county commissioner's office, 00:21:31.82\00:21:34.29 to Sheriff's office and we spend some time teaching them 00:21:34.30\00:21:37.51 about the eight natural remedies about the things 00:21:37.52\00:21:40.61 that we know to do in Adventist medicine, 00:21:40.62\00:21:43.04 we use Donna Halls material, we use Ned, 00:21:43.05\00:21:45.51 Ned Natalie's material and they loved it, 00:21:45.52\00:21:47.68 it was tremendous and after doing these 00:21:47.69\00:21:50.47 three or four different times over a period of the year. 00:21:50.48\00:21:52.86 One day I got a phone call, they said Dr. Torquato, 00:21:52.87\00:21:56.14 we would like to have a meeting of 00:21:56.15\00:21:59.07 all the county commissioners in the State of Idaho. 00:21:59.08\00:22:01.57 And we would like to invite you to come 00:22:01.58\00:22:03.99 and do a presentation to them and their staff 00:22:04.00\00:22:05.76 and the social workers from all those counties. 00:22:05.77\00:22:08.26 And I said well, that's fine. 00:22:08.27\00:22:09.61 But you know the deal and he said, 00:22:09.62\00:22:10.76 yeah I know, I know, I know. 00:22:10.77\00:22:12.05 Your pastor always goes wherever you go. 00:22:12.06\00:22:14.68 And I said that's fine. 00:22:14.69\00:22:16.92 So they said fine, we know him, we like him. 00:22:16.93\00:22:20.04 We know what he is like, we know what you are like? 00:22:20.05\00:22:21.76 Come and spend sometime teaching us and so we did. 00:22:21.77\00:22:24.46 I did an half an hour presentation 00:22:24.47\00:22:26.17 to all the county commissioners 00:22:26.18\00:22:27.58 in the State of Idaho and Pastor Doug Venn 00:22:27.59\00:22:29.95 did the Adventist version of the seven habits 00:22:29.96\00:22:32.64 of highly successful people and one of those habits was 00:22:32.65\00:22:36.04 "Time with your maker." 00:22:36.05\00:22:38.06 And when we are finished, one of the ladies 00:22:38.07\00:22:39.59 that was in the group came forward and she says, 00:22:39.60\00:22:41.91 you know, I have been working with my county commissioner 00:22:41.92\00:22:43.78 for the last five years, and in that time 00:22:43.79\00:22:46.85 they don't know that I'm an Adventist 00:22:46.86\00:22:49.57 and they said, she said-- 00:22:49.58\00:22:51.41 Closet Adventist, you've ever hear about one of those? 00:22:51.42\00:22:54.19 She came forward, she says, 00:22:54.20\00:22:55.20 I feel that you've done more in the hour 00:22:55.21\00:22:57.89 that you spent with my staff 00:22:57.90\00:23:00.03 than I have in that five years, 00:23:00.04\00:23:01.25 I feel call to do something for them. 00:23:01.26\00:23:03.14 Amen, amen. And pastor 00:23:03.15\00:23:04.74 what its feel like partnering with the physician quickly. 00:23:04.75\00:23:07.86 Well, through this partnership that we had 00:23:07.87\00:23:10.49 there in the Moscow and Pullman area. 00:23:10.50\00:23:12.76 It was so exciting to see how the doors 00:23:12.77\00:23:14.78 just were blowing open to give us access to minister 00:23:14.79\00:23:18.49 and to serve the community in practical ways, 00:23:18.50\00:23:21.38 whether it's with the young people 00:23:21.39\00:23:23.18 or with the thought leaders and our public civil servants. 00:23:23.19\00:23:26.21 It was just so exciting to see how, 00:23:26.22\00:23:28.33 the working together with Health Evangelism 00:23:28.34\00:23:31.73 or this Miracle Missionary work open those doors. 00:23:31.74\00:23:35.01 It also was exciting to see then one of my church members, 00:23:35.02\00:23:39.52 you know, Dr. Torquato, as a physician helping him 00:23:39.53\00:23:42.69 to focus on the gospel ministry and evangelism 00:23:42.70\00:23:46.64 and that just, just gave me such excitement. 00:23:46.65\00:23:50.24 So you two kept each other balance then. 00:23:50.25\00:23:52.47 That's right, that's right, it's kind of a tag team. 00:23:52.48\00:23:54.99 Super, super. I have found that sometimes 00:23:55.00\00:23:57.88 that pastors really don't know how to recruit a physician, 00:23:57.89\00:24:01.69 they know they look at them as somebody 00:24:01.70\00:24:04.00 that's gonna help with their budget, right. 00:24:04.01\00:24:06.81 And it's true that Doug, many times, 00:24:06.82\00:24:10.98 that's the role the pastors, you know, 00:24:10.99\00:24:13.21 view it the physicians that way. 00:24:13.22\00:24:15.57 But we are told in the writings of Ellen White 00:24:15.58\00:24:18.15 that the physician and we as pastors 00:24:18.16\00:24:21.31 are to partnered together because Jesus Christ 00:24:21.32\00:24:23.59 when He ministered here on earth, 00:24:23.60\00:24:25.93 He had a blended ministry, He combined medical work 00:24:25.94\00:24:29.46 and healing with the gospel work. 00:24:29.47\00:24:31.76 And so that way we can model that together 00:24:31.77\00:24:34.46 as we work together and so that was awesome to do. 00:24:34.47\00:24:37.53 An example, do you have any example of something 00:24:37.54\00:24:40.10 significant has come out of your practice that 00:24:40.11\00:24:42.94 where you could see God's hand involved with the patient? 00:24:42.95\00:24:45.57 Certainly, one episode where the pastoral influence 00:24:45.58\00:24:49.11 was seen from front to the end was a patient who came in 00:24:49.12\00:24:53.22 and essentially accosted me in the consultation room, 00:24:53.23\00:24:57.89 a University of Idaho professor angry, 00:24:57.90\00:25:00.94 because his wife who had advanced disease had, 00:25:00.95\00:25:05.24 had essentially avoided scientific medicine, 00:25:05.25\00:25:07.98 because of her fear of the way she was going to be treated. 00:25:07.99\00:25:10.94 And he basically put his finger in my nose 00:25:10.95\00:25:12.93 and accosted me and it was the spirit of God 00:25:12.94\00:25:16.04 through the opportunity in the morning, 00:25:16.05\00:25:18.13 we had to worship together that gave 00:25:18.14\00:25:20.37 that soft answer in return. 00:25:20.38\00:25:22.54 And then when I went back in, 00:25:22.55\00:25:24.50 the patient was preparing for their exam 00:25:24.51\00:25:26.14 and I went back and I was kind of complaining to my, 00:25:26.15\00:25:28.55 my co-worker, I said, you know, 00:25:28.56\00:25:30.73 they don't even know if they like me 00:25:30.74\00:25:31.87 and they don't like doctors and I got to do 00:25:31.88\00:25:34.29 and how I'm gonna bless them and my partner said to me, 00:25:34.30\00:25:37.98 you're gonna be with that woman when she dies 00:25:37.99\00:25:39.80 if she is bad as she is. 00:25:39.81\00:25:41.92 If she is as bad as what you think, 00:25:41.93\00:25:43.83 she is going to be dead in just a little while. 00:25:43.84\00:25:46.59 And you're gonna be there, that is your job 00:25:46.60\00:25:49.07 and the pastoral concept of accountability 00:25:49.08\00:25:51.55 and ministry came forward. 00:25:51.56\00:25:53.22 And then when I saw the patient and examined, 00:25:53.23\00:25:55.34 she had such terrible disfigurement 00:25:55.35\00:25:58.67 and terrible disease and humiliating for a woman. 00:25:58.68\00:26:02.11 It was just terrible and when I was talking to her 00:26:02.12\00:26:06.73 and working with her recognizing 00:26:06.74\00:26:09.85 how difficult it was I said, 00:26:09.86\00:26:11.07 we need to see you multiple times 00:26:11.08\00:26:12.95 in order to keep kind of tabs on you. 00:26:12.96\00:26:14.94 And so I started seeing her frequently 00:26:14.95\00:26:16.61 first every two weeks and then every month or so. 00:26:16.62\00:26:19.63 And then one day she came and she said, 00:26:19.64\00:26:20.84 "I am having a problem." I said, what's that? 00:26:20.85\00:26:22.18 She says, "I am having a discharge". 00:26:22.19\00:26:23.79 I said, well, I need to do an examine. 00:26:23.80\00:26:25.48 No, you're not doing an exam, you're in charge, you know, 00:26:25.49\00:26:27.71 what I'm looking for, you got cancer. 00:26:27.72\00:26:29.79 She says, "No, you are not going to do an examine. 00:26:29.80\00:26:31.56 Next time, next month she comes back, she says, 00:26:31.57\00:26:33.66 "I am having a little blood in my urine." 00:26:33.67\00:26:36.06 I said well, I got to do an exam. 00:26:36.07\00:26:37.60 No, you're not going to do an exam. 00:26:37.61\00:26:39.39 I said, fine you're in charge, 00:26:39.40\00:26:40.65 but you know what I am looking for? 00:26:40.66\00:26:41.90 And then finally the third time she came and said 00:26:41.91\00:26:43.77 "I am having pain down lower." 00:26:43.78\00:26:45.66 And I said, I had to do an exam. 00:26:45.67\00:26:47.43 She says no and her husband who had basically 00:26:47.44\00:26:50.55 accosted me at the beginning said, 00:26:50.56\00:26:53.29 "For goodness sake, please let him do the exam". 00:26:53.30\00:26:56.36 So I went did the exam and she had a mass in her pelvis, 00:26:56.37\00:26:59.71 the size of a softball. I went talked to her doctor. 00:26:59.72\00:27:02.16 They have been driving across the State of Seattle 00:27:02.17\00:27:04.30 once a week in order to be able to get care 00:27:04.31\00:27:06.59 in a cancer center that allows natural poison. 00:27:06.60\00:27:10.54 And I called her oncologist and I said, hey, 00:27:10.55\00:27:14.79 they're having a problem and this what I found, 00:27:14.80\00:27:16.68 and here is the history and she said, they said, oh, 00:27:16.69\00:27:18.51 the poor unfortunate woman. 00:27:18.52\00:27:20.34 She has a second primary, get her out here tomorrow 00:27:20.35\00:27:23.26 and I'll take care of her. 00:27:23.27\00:27:24.55 And I got back in the room and I said, 00:27:24.56\00:27:25.75 ma'am, your doctor, the oncologist 00:27:25.76\00:27:28.28 thinks you have a second primary. 00:27:28.29\00:27:30.39 And she let out this wailing cry, 00:27:30.40\00:27:33.12 this terrible cry, she just bowed down in tears 00:27:33.13\00:27:37.43 and after about two or three minutes, 00:27:37.44\00:27:38.60 I just reached down and I said ma'am, 00:27:38.61\00:27:40.96 I wish there was something, something I could do for you. 00:27:40.97\00:27:44.71 And between her wail she said, 00:27:44.72\00:27:46.94 I wish there was some way you could convince me 00:27:46.95\00:27:52.50 that it's not because I am evil 00:27:52.51\00:27:53.95 that all this happens to me. 00:27:53.96\00:27:56.31 Somebody had taught her the lie that 00:27:56.32\00:27:58.67 we have a vengeful God and she deserve that kind of pain. 00:27:58.68\00:28:02.54 So what was their final reaction? 00:28:02.55\00:28:05.04 I told her, you know what, 00:28:05.05\00:28:06.19 you're gonna go to Seattle, you're gonna come back. 00:28:06.20\00:28:08.16 When you come back, I don't know 00:28:08.17\00:28:09.31 what they are going to do with you. 00:28:09.32\00:28:10.29 But when you come back, you need to have family 00:28:10.30\00:28:12.61 and you need to be with mine. 00:28:12.62\00:28:14.70 and so you need to come to my home. 00:28:14.71\00:28:16.61 She went to Seattle, they found that she did not 00:28:16.62\00:28:18.30 have a second primary, she had a walled off abscess. 00:28:18.31\00:28:20.53 They did surgery, she was cured. 00:28:20.54\00:28:22.86 Two weeks later she was in my home beginning to start 00:28:22.87\00:28:26.31 of a five year relationship with people 00:28:26.32\00:28:28.61 who became my best friends 00:28:28.62\00:28:30.17 and a man who became God father to my children, 00:28:30.18\00:28:32.64 who initially had accosted me, because the Holy Spirit 00:28:32.65\00:28:37.63 had given us the desire to serve in ministry. 00:28:37.64\00:28:40.95 Physicians, partner with your pastors. 00:28:40.96\00:28:44.62 Amen! Yes please. Amen! 00:28:44.63\00:28:45.89 And you can see the same kind of results 00:28:45.90\00:28:48.41 that Dr. Torquato is seeing up in Idaho. 00:28:48.42\00:28:51.57 Amen. Wow! Doug, how in a world 00:36:19.31\00:36:24.49 did you get involved with this organization, I mean? 00:36:24.50\00:36:27.08 Well, ACTS itself began in 2004. 00:36:27.09\00:36:30.81 There was a series of four hurricanes 00:36:30.82\00:36:33.66 that went through Florida. 00:36:33.67\00:36:34.64 And so ACTS began as a local church response 00:36:34.65\00:36:38.60 to the need and it has grown over the years. 00:36:38.61\00:36:42.00 So this kind of started out like a local community service 00:36:42.01\00:36:45.65 activity of a local church in Florida, right. 00:36:45.66\00:36:47.82 And what's happening with it since then? 00:36:47.83\00:36:49.80 Well, then 2005 Katrina and there was a relationship 00:36:49.81\00:36:54.66 that developed between the schools 00:36:54.67\00:36:56.28 and the Southern Union and ACTS. 00:36:56.29\00:36:58.23 And so pretty much all the academies 00:36:58.24\00:37:01.02 in the Southern Union were responding to Katrina 00:37:01.03\00:37:03.95 and going down to Bass Academy and to Waveland, 00:37:03.96\00:37:08.87 Mississippi in response. 00:37:08.88\00:37:10.85 Since that time Heritage Academy, 00:37:10.86\00:37:13.43 has been involved in about 15, 16 deployments 00:37:13.44\00:37:17.52 with ACTS over those years. 00:37:17.53\00:37:19.88 And of course, you know, during these years 00:37:19.89\00:37:22.37 the intensity of natural disasters 00:37:22.38\00:37:25.38 has increased and their frequency. 00:37:25.39\00:37:27.90 Are there other organizations getting involve with ACTS, 00:37:27.91\00:37:30.22 is it growing it all or? 00:37:30.23\00:37:31.52 Well, you know with ACTS, ACTS partners together 00:37:31.53\00:37:37.72 with the schools North American Division 00:37:37.73\00:37:41.11 Office of Education is partnered with ACTS. 00:37:41.12\00:37:44.05 So Universities, Adventist Universities, 00:37:44.06\00:37:46.74 Adventist schools, doctors, in Haiti, 00:37:46.75\00:37:52.17 I think 6,000 volunteers. 00:37:52.18\00:37:54.33 Wow! From Adventist medical comunity. 00:37:54.34\00:37:57.45 So this is really matrume, I mean as natural disasters 00:37:57.46\00:37:59.02 have skyrocketed more in the last several years. 00:37:59.03\00:38:01.27 Then ACTS has got into grow 00:38:01.28\00:38:03.28 more and more and more people involved. 00:38:03.29\00:38:04.39 Debbie, have you been involved with 00:38:04.40\00:38:05.49 any like local disasters that happened recently? 00:38:05.50\00:38:09.52 And actually unfortunately to the south, 00:38:09.53\00:38:12.01 many of us experienced just a horrific evening of tornadoes 00:38:12.02\00:38:16.72 and yes we did respond both locally 00:38:16.73\00:38:20.09 to local mountain community and also to Alabama, 00:38:20.10\00:38:24.95 to just north in Birmingham the Pleasant Grove, 00:38:24.96\00:38:27.21 that you saw in the video. 00:38:27.22\00:38:28.19 Wow. You know, I was just looking on a website 00:38:28.20\00:38:29.98 and I noticed that, if you look at natural disasters 00:38:29.99\00:38:32.44 how they've increased in the last five to ten years. 00:38:32.45\00:38:35.04 You go back in the 1990s, 00:38:35.05\00:38:36.33 it'd be like three natural disasters 00:38:36.34\00:38:37.71 and now it's got through the point where like for a 2010, 00:38:37.72\00:38:41.53 the list is like this long of all these different 00:38:41.54\00:38:43.84 major disasters have happened worldwide. 00:38:43.85\00:38:45.62 So these guys here, your shirt is a little dirty 00:38:45.63\00:38:47.62 is that because you were doing some kind of relief 00:38:47.63\00:38:49.85 for something like that. 00:38:49.86\00:38:50.98 Who are these guys anyhow? 00:38:50.99\00:38:52.45 Would you like to introduce them? 00:38:52.46\00:38:53.43 Sure. Hundred thousand requests for churches 00:42:29.07\00:42:31.99 50,000 requests for schools, yeah. 00:42:32.00\00:42:34.33 Some have to be done to be built faster, 00:42:34.34\00:42:36.72 more economically and otherwise we're just, 00:42:36.73\00:42:40.79 you know, not, not meet the needs. 00:42:40.80\00:42:42.25 So that's how it came about 00:42:42.26\00:42:43.84 and we've involved the lot of partners. 00:42:43.85\00:42:46.41 Here is one of them, Jason Fournier, 00:42:46.42\00:42:48.75 is with Kibidula,He's been helping with One-Day Church. 00:42:48.76\00:42:52.52 We've been working with other ASI ministries. 00:42:52.53\00:42:56.02 Deuroff, Living Waters is working in Kenya. 00:42:56.03\00:42:59.68 Of course Alan Knowles, Riverside Farms, 00:42:59.69\00:43:03.84 Gary Roberts and Chad, Barry Moser, Hopkin Congo, 00:43:03.85\00:43:08.71 lot of people that we're working with, 00:43:08.72\00:43:11.00 lot of volunteers, church and schools here 00:43:11.01\00:43:14.50 in North America getting involved in this program, 00:43:14.51\00:43:16.72 and it's exciting to see. 00:43:16.73\00:43:18.73 Now you see this morning Adventists getting involved, 00:43:18.74\00:43:22.96 trying to think other people that have been involved 00:43:22.97\00:43:24.91 in partnering on this, because it's really takes everybody. 00:43:24.92\00:43:29.36 It's not just a Maranatha thing, 00:43:29.37\00:43:31.55 It's not just an ASI thing, it's not just a church thing, 00:43:31.56\00:43:33.86 that's how it started. 00:43:33.87\00:43:35.27 We need every body's involvement to respond 00:43:35.28\00:43:38.76 to this tremendous need around the world. 00:43:38.77\00:43:40.66 Yeah, it's really important to understand that 00:43:40.67\00:43:42.74 when we do evangelism in these different remote areas, 00:43:42.75\00:43:45.23 that unless we establish a building there, 00:43:45.24\00:43:47.89 often times what we do can fall apart. 00:43:47.90\00:43:49.76 The church is a establishing factor 00:43:49.77\00:43:52.19 to make that whole thing continue to grow 00:43:52.20\00:43:53.96 and continue to happen there, this extremely important. 00:43:53.97\00:43:57.15 I should, I should mention just one other partner 00:43:57.16\00:43:59.33 that's some of you may have heard that 00:43:59.34\00:44:01.95 there was a partnership that was unusual with 3ABN. 00:44:01.96\00:44:06.77 Danny Shelton even wrote a song about the One-Day Church 00:44:06.78\00:44:10.91 and put together a whole CD, 00:44:10.92\00:44:13.33 wow, to promote the One-Day Church. 00:44:13.34\00:44:15.07 Well, earlier today, they played a song 00:44:15.08\00:44:16.69 that was the One-Day Church, 00:44:16.70\00:44:17.67 that wasn't Danny Shelton singing though and there-- 00:44:17.68\00:44:20.24 Ah, no, no, it wasn't Danny singing, 00:44:20.25\00:44:23.21 but he did write the song. 00:44:23.22\00:44:24.63 Oh, he did write the song, okay. 00:44:24.64\00:44:26.42 There is other partners of course I think that God 00:44:26.43\00:44:29.08 sends a lot of what should we call them, 00:44:29.09\00:44:32.05 logistics angles to be involved in this project, 00:44:32.06\00:44:35.91 because when you're working in the areas 00:44:35.92\00:44:37.83 that these projects go. 00:44:37.84\00:44:39.89 I'll tell you, you need a lot of help from above. 00:44:39.90\00:44:42.57 So we need the logistic angels to go ahead of us 00:44:42.58\00:44:45.05 and work out the details. 00:44:45.06\00:44:46.62 But Jason is probably better talking about that. 00:44:46.63\00:44:48.94 Yeah, Jason, so you're in Africa, and is it Tanzania. 00:44:48.95\00:44:53.10 That's correct, I live in Tanzania at a -- 00:44:53.11\00:44:56.65 I'm director of a small mission station 00:44:56.66\00:44:58.52 called Kibidula Farm, we have school of agriculture, 00:44:58.53\00:45:02.92 a school of evangelism, a primary school. 00:45:02.93\00:45:05.64 We have a publishing ministry. 00:45:05.65\00:45:08.49 We send out global pioneers or lay missionaries 00:45:08.50\00:45:11.83 into unentered areas to spread the gospel, 00:45:11.84\00:45:14.88 where the gospel has never been preached. 00:45:14.89\00:45:17.67 And most recently, we've had the privilege of working 00:45:17.68\00:45:22.25 together with Maranatha and ASI on this project. 00:45:22.26\00:45:26.61 I think it's a wonderful project of the One-Day Church. 00:45:26.62\00:45:30.11 Now you have some pictures here, 00:45:30.12\00:45:31.51 could you tell us a little bit about these pictures. 00:45:31.52\00:45:33.96 Okay. Well, you can just see the picture 00:45:33.97\00:45:37.60 thereby moving onto the next one. 00:45:37.61\00:45:39.93 The need for the churches, this is a church 00:45:39.94\00:45:44.91 that was hit by a storm and you can see 00:45:44.92\00:45:46.86 it's just a grass and reed and stick structure. 00:45:46.87\00:45:49.91 It was completely destroyed 00:45:49.92\00:45:51.52 and that's why we meet all over the place. 00:45:51.53\00:45:54.36 And so, we've replaced that church, 00:45:54.37\00:45:57.22 we've also had the privilege of going into Massai Land, 00:45:57.23\00:46:01.19 where the gospel, the Massai have been slow 00:46:01.20\00:46:04.95 to accept the gospel, but in recent years 00:46:04.96\00:46:07.86 they've been opening up 00:46:07.87\00:46:09.36 and it's been a tremendous privilege 00:46:09.37\00:46:11.66 to go into Massai Land. 00:46:11.67\00:46:14.72 Where they don't actually have permanent buildings 00:46:14.73\00:46:18.33 and we've built these churches for them and, 00:46:18.34\00:46:20.98 and they're amazed and they're filling them. 00:46:20.99\00:46:25.17 Moving onto the next picture. 00:46:25.18\00:46:29.74 Okay, one back. 00:46:29.75\00:46:31.29 I've been using my pickup to begin with 00:46:31.30\00:46:33.76 to build these churches and the pickup 00:46:33.77\00:46:37.10 was being overloaded and the frame started to crack a part. 00:46:37.11\00:46:40.05 And last years ASI paid for partially for a new truck 00:46:40.06\00:46:47.86 and that's the picture of when I first took delivery 00:46:47.87\00:46:50.85 of the new truck and now it can load ten churches 00:46:50.86\00:46:53.24 on the truck and we can leave Sunday morning 00:46:53.25\00:46:56.57 and come back before Friday having finished ten churches. 00:46:56.58\00:47:00.65 Did I hear you right ten churches on that truck? 00:47:00.66\00:47:02.85 We put ten churches on this truck. 00:47:02.86\00:47:04.70 Can you imagine that? 00:47:04.71\00:47:06.14 And there it is the first church, 00:47:06.15\00:47:07.90 we built from that truck there are nine still sitting 00:47:07.91\00:47:10.33 on the truck in that picture 00:47:10.34\00:47:12.33 and the Lord has greatly blessed. 00:47:12.34\00:47:14.93 I'm especially privileged to be part of this project 00:47:14.94\00:47:19.63 in a wide way in Tanzania. 00:47:19.64\00:47:22.15 Oh, Praise God.
