Good morning GYC. It is my pleasure 00:00:11.63\00:00:15.70 tonight to introduce our speaker for the 00:00:15.70\00:00:18.30 evening meeting at GYC this year. 00:00:18.30\00:00:20.30 Dr. Eric Walsh, I've had the privilege of living 00:00:20.30\00:00:24.36 in the same neck of the woods as Dr. Walsh 00:00:24.36\00:00:26.56 for the past several years down in 00:00:26.56\00:00:28.70 Southern California and so have been 00:00:28.70\00:00:31.00 able to hear him preach often on over the years. 00:00:31.00\00:00:33.46 And I can tell you he preaches with passion. 00:00:33.46\00:00:36.73 He preaches from his heart and he preaches 00:00:36.73\00:00:39.80 about real life things that are going 00:00:39.80\00:00:41.66 on in our lives. Dr. Walsh is a physician 00:00:41.66\00:00:45.20 living in the Southern California area 00:00:45.20\00:00:47.30 and along with hearing him preach 00:00:47.30\00:00:49.40 over the years, I've seen him in action 00:00:49.40\00:00:51.30 as a doctor. I took a trip into the 00:00:51.30\00:00:54.26 Urgent Care while back with a bee sting 00:00:54.26\00:00:56.30 that was swelling at my arm and Dr. Walsh 00:00:56.30\00:00:58.30 just happen to be the doctor on call in house 00:00:58.30\00:01:01.23 and I can tell you from personal experience 00:01:01.23\00:01:03.76 he takes very good care of his patients 00:01:03.76\00:01:06.73 and he is a wise and caring doctor. 00:01:06.73\00:01:08.76 He is currently the Director of the 00:01:08.76\00:01:12.83 Health Department in Pasadena, California 00:01:12.83\00:01:15.36 and he is on the faculty at the 00:01:15.36\00:01:17.33 Loma Linda University School of Medicine. 00:01:17.33\00:01:20.00 Dr. Walsh has a family. He is married 00:01:20.00\00:01:22.96 to his wife Annette and they have 00:01:22.96\00:01:25.03 three children. We are grateful 00:01:25.03\00:01:28.30 and excited to have Dr. Walsh here with us 00:01:28.30\00:01:31.53 at GYC for these next three days, 00:01:31.53\00:01:33.76 and I know that we are all in for a treat 00:01:33.76\00:01:37.13 and a tremendous blessing. 00:01:37.13\00:01:39.33 See there by the road, there's a man 00:01:58.96\00:02:05.36 about to give up, thinking it's too hard 00:02:05.36\00:02:11.00 we can't keep going on like this. 00:02:11.00\00:02:17.03 Then hears a voice inside him saying, 00:02:17.03\00:02:22.23 my child I know that it's hard. But I've gone 00:02:22.23\00:02:27.63 this way before you, there's no time 00:02:27.63\00:02:32.06 for turning around. There's no turning back, 00:02:32.06\00:02:41.60 no man that puts his hand to the plow 00:02:41.60\00:02:47.13 and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God. 00:02:47.13\00:02:57.43 There's no turning back, though all hell should 00:02:57.43\00:03:03.36 try to shake us, keep pressing on till we see 00:03:03.36\00:03:09.23 our savior's face. No turning back. 00:03:09.23\00:03:19.20 Though tempted to turn back we will find 00:03:23.06\00:03:29.60 we can keep up, if we truly seek to give God, 00:03:29.60\00:03:37.43 or love ourselves, we will find a strength 00:03:37.43\00:03:43.50 in him that will never let us go. 00:03:43.50\00:03:50.23 He will take us by the hand 00:03:50.23\00:03:54.66 and gently lead us home. There's no turning back, 00:03:54.66\00:04:05.13 no man that puts his hand to the plow 00:04:05.13\00:04:10.60 and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God. 00:04:10.60\00:04:20.66 There's no turning back, though all hell 00:04:20.66\00:04:25.93 should try to shake us, keep pressing on till 00:04:25.93\00:04:31.30 we see our savior's face. No turning back. 00:04:31.30\00:04:40.83 There's no turning back, no man that puts 00:04:42.03\00:04:50.86 his hand to the plow and looks back is fit 00:04:50.86\00:04:59.50 for the kingdom of God. There's no turning back, 00:04:59.50\00:05:07.93 though all hell should try to shake us, 00:05:07.93\00:05:12.03 keep pressing on till we see our savior's face. 00:05:12.03\00:05:19.70 No turning back. No turning back. 00:05:19.70\00:05:28.46 No turning back. No turning back. 00:05:28.46\00:05:41.93 No turning back. Amen. 00:05:41.93\00:05:51.23 Good evening GYC. Good evening. 00:06:03.60\00:06:06.06 Let me just say that it is a privilege 00:06:06.06\00:06:08.53 and an honor to be here with you tonight 00:06:08.53\00:06:10.23 and I can tell you that to see an army 00:06:10.23\00:06:15.83 of young people come together to be trained 00:06:15.83\00:06:19.26 and to be educated, to lift one another 00:06:19.26\00:06:23.90 for the cause of Jesus Christ really thrills 00:06:23.90\00:06:25.80 my heart, in fact I'm humble even to be here, 00:06:25.80\00:06:28.83 because there are a lot of places young people 00:06:28.83\00:06:32.16 could be this weekend amen. 00:06:32.16\00:06:33.53 There are a lot of people trying to 00:06:34.30\00:06:35.30 figure out where they're gonna party 00:06:35.30\00:06:36.63 this weekend, but I praise God that we could 00:06:36.63\00:06:39.93 fill a room so large that I really can't see 00:06:39.93\00:06:44.60 the back of it. And I praise God 00:06:44.60\00:06:47.93 that God's church still has young people 00:06:47.93\00:06:51.80 who are very serious about finishing 00:06:51.80\00:06:54.30 the work. So let's just say amen. Amen. 00:06:54.30\00:06:58.00 And let's give the Lord a hand praise. 00:06:58.00\00:06:59.53 Let's just tell God that we love Him, 00:06:59.53\00:07:01.20 because God is good. Let me tell you 00:07:01.20\00:07:04.86 something we could, we could go 00:07:04.86\00:07:06.43 all night about this, but I work in the field 00:07:06.43\00:07:10.43 of public health and I see young people 00:07:10.43\00:07:11.93 all the time who are in dire states. 00:07:11.93\00:07:14.50 And I've prayed with many of them many times 00:07:15.36\00:07:17.40 and asked them to you know make wise decision 00:07:17.40\00:07:20.96 or to encourage them to do good things. 00:07:20.96\00:07:23.16 So I'm glad to know that I can go back 00:07:24.20\00:07:26.03 and say look I've seen what God 00:07:26.03\00:07:28.33 can do for young people. And I saw it at GYC, 00:07:28.33\00:07:31.73 somebody ought to say amen. Amen. 00:07:31.73\00:07:33.70 If you don't mind turn with me in your Bibles 00:07:34.46\00:07:37.40 to the book of 2nd Timothy. 00:07:37.40\00:07:38.63 The second chapter, 2nd Timothy chapter 2 00:07:39.43\00:07:42.63 starting at verse one. 2nd Timothy chapter 2 00:07:42.63\00:07:45.70 starting at verse one. And I'm gonna read 00:07:45.70\00:07:51.30 the first four verses from the second chapter 00:07:51.30\00:07:54.70 of the book of 2nd Timothy. 00:07:54.70\00:07:56.76 2nd Timothy chapter 2 verses 2 to 4. 00:07:58.00\00:08:02.00 The scripture says, Thou therefore, my son, 00:08:02.00\00:08:05.70 be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. 00:08:05.70\00:08:08.53 And the things that thou hast heard of me 00:08:09.43\00:08:11.80 among many witnesses, the same commit thou 00:08:11.80\00:08:14.86 to faithful men, who shall be able to 00:08:14.86\00:08:17.83 teach others also. Verse three says, 00:08:17.83\00:08:21.63 Thou therefore endure hardness, 00:08:21.63\00:08:23.70 as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. 00:08:25.13\00:08:27.96 No man that warreth entangleth himself 00:08:29.93\00:08:32.90 with the affairs of this life; 00:08:32.90\00:08:35.30 that he may please him who hath chosen him 00:08:36.10\00:08:38.80 to be a soldier. Our message this evening is 00:08:38.80\00:08:44.13 entitled the good soldier, 00:08:44.13\00:08:46.60 the good soldier. Let us pray. 00:08:47.20\00:08:49.20 Father God, we thank you Lord for this 00:08:49.20\00:08:52.00 opportunity to go into your word. 00:08:52.00\00:08:54.66 I ask Father God right now that you make me 00:08:56.36\00:08:58.83 just a rusty old, sorry old nail Lord. 00:08:58.83\00:09:01.56 But Lord I ask that you hammer that 00:09:03.10\00:09:04.86 nail into a wall and then upon that nail 00:09:04.86\00:09:08.93 I ask Lord Jesus that you would hang a 00:09:08.93\00:09:12.13 portrait of yourself, so that tonight Eric Walsh 00:09:12.13\00:09:16.56 is not seen or heard. But Father God 00:09:16.56\00:09:20.00 I ask that we would hear a message 00:09:20.00\00:09:21.73 from the throne room of grace. 00:09:21.73\00:09:23.20 This is our prayer in Jesus' name, 00:09:24.00\00:09:25.86 let the church say amen. Amen. 00:09:26.70\00:09:29.36 The city of Rome was on fire, 00:09:30.20\00:09:33.10 in fact three fourths of the city 00:09:34.73\00:09:37.90 wound up burning. It started in July of AD 64 00:09:37.90\00:09:45.56 on the night between the 18th and the 19th. 00:09:45.56\00:09:48.90 It was said to have started at the 00:09:50.66\00:09:52.43 south-eastern end of the Circus Maximus 00:09:52.43\00:09:54.90 where flammable goods were being sold. 00:09:54.90\00:09:56.90 And once the fire caught in the Ancient Rome 00:09:57.80\00:10:01.00 it was difficult to stop the fire, 00:10:01.00\00:10:03.30 because the way that the city was built. 00:10:03.30\00:10:05.40 The homes were connected. But not only 00:10:05.40\00:10:09.63 were the homes connected, they were 00:10:09.63\00:10:10.70 connected and the walls of those connected homes 00:10:10.70\00:10:13.83 were flammable. So once the city began to burn. 00:10:13.83\00:10:18.36 The city of over two million people, 00:10:18.36\00:10:21.00 the city began to burn in rapid succession. 00:10:21.00\00:10:24.43 The fire burned for six days in Rome. 00:10:25.93\00:10:29.10 Six long difficult days to die down 00:10:29.10\00:10:35.76 and then burn again for three more days. 00:10:35.76\00:10:37.90 Three great ancient historians Cassius Dio, 00:10:39.93\00:10:43.56 Suetonius and Tacitus all state that it was 00:10:43.56\00:10:47.10 Nero who started the fire. These historians 00:10:47.10\00:10:51.80 also state that he played the lyre 00:10:51.80\00:10:54.56 and he sang from the palace walls 00:10:54.56\00:10:58.20 as the city burned. There are those who 00:10:58.20\00:11:02.53 argue that in fact what Nero really wanted 00:11:02.53\00:11:05.90 was an opportunity to clear out sections 00:11:05.90\00:11:08.60 of the city, so that he could build 00:11:08.60\00:11:10.33 a larger palace. Something that 00:11:10.33\00:11:13.10 he ultimately does after the fire is quenched 00:11:13.10\00:11:16.00 by the battalions of firemen building a large 00:11:16.00\00:11:20.56 palace and over a 130 foot, 00:11:20.56\00:11:23.33 30 meter high statue of himself in gold. 00:11:23.33\00:11:26.90 Nero was a sick man and history records 00:11:28.63\00:11:31.93 that not only is he guilty of killing 00:11:31.93\00:11:34.43 his mother and of killing his second wife. 00:11:34.43\00:11:37.40 But Nero was the first of the Pagan emperors 00:11:37.40\00:11:41.33 to begin to torture the Christians. 00:11:41.33\00:11:43.96 And when the fire was burning, 00:11:45.40\00:11:47.53 one of the things that happened is that 00:11:48.13\00:11:50.13 the citizens of Rome began to believe 00:11:50.13\00:11:52.43 that somehow Nero was guilty of the fire. 00:11:52.43\00:11:56.26 Nero was so upset at, at the idea 00:11:57.13\00:12:00.06 that he was being indicted that he decided 00:12:00.06\00:12:03.03 to turn his attention and the attentions 00:12:03.03\00:12:05.46 of the citizens of Rome off of himself 00:12:05.46\00:12:07.96 and on to another group of people. 00:12:07.96\00:12:11.30 In fact he arrested and tortured 00:12:12.86\00:12:16.26 a few Christians and those Christians 00:12:16.26\00:12:19.53 implicated other Christians 00:12:19.53\00:12:22.03 and so on until the young Christian religion 00:12:22.03\00:12:26.03 newer to Rome than most other religions 00:12:26.03\00:12:28.90 which was a religion popular along the poor 00:12:29.76\00:12:32.53 and the destitute, that religion 00:12:32.53\00:12:34.50 if you belong to it people were being 00:12:34.50\00:12:37.30 gathered up and collected and torture. 00:12:37.30\00:12:42.20 In fact Tacitus and Tacitus is a very 00:12:43.10\00:12:46.20 important ancient historian. 00:12:46.20\00:12:48.90 There was a time when it was argued that 00:12:48.90\00:12:51.46 there was no evidence of Jesus Christ 00:12:51.46\00:12:54.70 outside of the scripture. But Tacitus 00:12:54.70\00:12:57.70 writes and I want you to hear this. 00:12:57.70\00:12:59.43 Tacitus writes, therefore speaking of, 00:12:59.43\00:13:02.46 of Nero is therefore to stop the rumor that 00:13:02.46\00:13:05.90 he had set Rome on fire, he the emperor Nero 00:13:05.90\00:13:09.06 falsely charged with guilt and punished 00:13:09.06\00:13:12.36 with the most fearful tortures, 00:13:12.36\00:13:14.10 the persons commonly called Christians 00:13:14.10\00:13:16.70 who are generally hated for their enormities. 00:13:16.70\00:13:20.23 Christus, the founder of that name. 00:13:21.06\00:13:23.93 The founder of the Christian religion 00:13:23.93\00:13:25.36 they say. He says was put to death 00:13:25.36\00:13:27.86 as a criminal by Pontius Pilate, 00:13:27.86\00:13:30.36 procurator of Judea in the reign of Tiberius, 00:13:31.10\00:13:34.66 but the pernicious superstition repressed 00:13:34.66\00:13:38.13 for a time broke out yet again not only through 00:13:38.13\00:13:41.33 Judea where the mischief originated, 00:13:41.33\00:13:44.63 but through the city of Rome also, 00:13:44.63\00:13:46.96 where all horrible and disgraceful things flow. 00:13:47.70\00:13:50.96 Tacitus makes it clear in his writings. 00:13:51.70\00:13:53.50 He was a boy when the city burned 00:13:53.50\00:13:55.10 and he speaks negatively of Christianity 00:13:55.83\00:13:57.93 of course because to speak positively of 00:13:57.93\00:14:00.13 Christianity would have meant that he might have 00:14:00.13\00:14:02.73 found himself being tortured. 00:14:02.73\00:14:04.10 But Tacitus anchors a few things in history. 00:14:05.00\00:14:07.43 He anchors in history the fact that not only 00:14:07.43\00:14:10.36 did Jesus exist, but Jesus was put to death 00:14:10.36\00:14:13.63 by Pontius Pilate, and I submit to you 00:14:13.63\00:14:16.90 that the other ancient historian 00:14:16.90\00:14:18.56 that does this Josephus are both important, 00:14:18.56\00:14:21.03 because even Josephus says that Jesus 00:14:21.03\00:14:23.50 was the Messiah, being that he was a 00:14:23.50\00:14:25.40 Jewish historian. So I submit to you that 00:14:25.40\00:14:29.20 out of this, this fire comes the torture of the 00:14:29.20\00:14:32.46 Christians, but it also cements Christianity 00:14:32.46\00:14:35.80 in Pagan Rome as a religion. How horrific 00:14:35.80\00:14:40.86 was the torture of the Christians as this, 00:14:40.86\00:14:44.83 after the city burned. It was so horrific, 00:14:44.83\00:14:46.96 because they would take Christians 00:14:46.96\00:14:48.80 and they would put them up on stakes. 00:14:48.80\00:14:51.83 They would take animals skins freshly ripped 00:14:51.83\00:14:55.96 from off of the bodies of animals, 00:14:55.96\00:14:58.03 and wrap the Christians up in the animal skins 00:14:58.03\00:15:01.90 and then release up the Christians hungry dogs. 00:15:01.90\00:15:06.86 So terrible was Nero who wanted desperately 00:15:07.60\00:15:11.63 to be a great charioteer, that Nero 00:15:11.63\00:15:15.40 would take the Christians and sometimes 00:15:15.40\00:15:17.23 he would put them on poles and he would 00:15:17.23\00:15:19.40 light them on fire. And at night Nero would 00:15:19.40\00:15:24.80 practice his chariot racing as he bobbed 00:15:24.80\00:15:28.26 and weaved in between the human torches 00:15:28.26\00:15:31.66 that were Christians. But no matter 00:15:31.66\00:15:38.13 what they did, GYC. No matter how tortured 00:15:38.13\00:15:42.60 the Christians were. One of the powerful things 00:15:42.60\00:15:46.30 that happens is the Christian church 00:15:46.30\00:15:48.63 only gains strength. In fact Tacitus says 00:15:48.63\00:15:54.23 something profound. He says that as the average 00:15:54.23\00:15:57.23 citizens see what's happening, 00:15:57.23\00:15:59.00 many of them begin to feel sorry 00:15:59.00\00:16:02.30 for the Christians. And as Christians sing hymns 00:16:02.30\00:16:07.13 even as they are set ablaze. The last sound 00:16:07.76\00:16:14.30 uttered out of their parched mouths 00:16:14.30\00:16:16.86 are songs of praise to God. Can you imagine 00:16:17.73\00:16:23.86 being an spectator and watching as one of these 00:16:23.86\00:16:27.73 Christian dies and no matter how fierce 00:16:27.73\00:16:31.10 the power of the Roman Empire is upon 00:16:31.10\00:16:34.56 the group, no matter how pointed 00:16:34.56\00:16:36.93 and directed the attack, no matter how hateful 00:16:36.93\00:16:39.66 and slanderous the words, yet this group of 00:16:39.66\00:16:43.80 Christians only continue to praise 00:16:43.80\00:16:46.70 the living God. Amen. Nero realized 00:16:46.70\00:16:56.16 that he was going to do away with Christianity 00:16:56.16\00:16:59.86 he had to do away with it's leadership. 00:17:00.70\00:17:03.30 So for the second time he goes 00:17:04.96\00:17:08.03 and he arrests a very small feeble 00:17:08.03\00:17:11.70 older gentleman by the name of Paul. 00:17:11.70\00:17:14.80 And Paul is dragged in and thrown 00:17:15.70\00:17:18.40 into a dungeon. And left there to suffer. 00:17:18.40\00:17:22.53 Nero trying to make an example of him, 00:17:24.06\00:17:26.33 trying to squash out this religion, 00:17:26.33\00:17:29.16 who after a while they no longer said that 00:17:29.73\00:17:32.63 their crime was, was burning down the city, 00:17:32.63\00:17:35.03 but eventually the crime leaves being simply 00:17:35.03\00:17:38.36 burning down the city and Tacitus puts 00:17:38.36\00:17:40.70 it like this he says, eventually their crime 00:17:40.70\00:17:43.56 is the hating of the human race. 00:17:43.56\00:17:45.80 Let me warn you young people that 00:17:47.16\00:17:49.20 if you're going to be a Christian. 00:17:49.20\00:17:50.50 The enemy is gonna tell lies on you. 00:17:51.63\00:17:54.03 The enemy is going to try to galvanize 00:17:55.70\00:17:58.83 the world against us. You're gonna be seen 00:17:58.83\00:18:02.70 as barbaric, antiquated, out of touch, 00:18:02.70\00:18:07.86 out of date, you're slow, you're not that 00:18:07.86\00:18:11.70 smart actually. In fact these pernicious lies 00:18:11.70\00:18:15.96 have began and a very sophisticated trap 00:18:15.96\00:18:18.90 has already been sprung on the Christian world, 00:18:18.90\00:18:21.40 and in fact much of Christendom 00:18:21.40\00:18:23.16 doesn't realize this trap has been sprung. 00:18:23.16\00:18:25.60 When I look at individuals like 00:18:26.53\00:18:28.63 Sarah Palin or the lady here in Delaware, 00:18:28.63\00:18:34.50 just close by recently ran for the Senate seat 00:18:34.50\00:18:37.33 in the United States. The lady who said 00:18:37.33\00:18:40.60 she wasn't a witch. You notice that 00:18:40.60\00:18:44.20 what they do is when Sarah Palin is asked 00:18:44.20\00:18:46.53 and O'Donnell are asked if they believe 00:18:46.53\00:18:50.06 in evolution or creationism. 00:18:50.06\00:18:52.86 When these questions are posed to them 00:18:52.86\00:18:55.50 there are commentators and pundits that 00:18:55.50\00:18:57.60 now say listen I remember hearing 00:18:57.60\00:18:59.80 Arianna Huffington say about Sarah Palin, 00:19:00.60\00:19:03.00 she is not qualified to be the 00:19:03.00\00:19:05.33 President of the United States, 00:19:05.33\00:19:06.60 because she believes in a six day creation. 00:19:06.60\00:19:10.43 Now many would argue there are a lot of 00:19:12.73\00:19:14.46 reason Sarah Palin may not have been qualified 00:19:14.46\00:19:17.93 to be the President of the United States. 00:19:17.93\00:19:20.36 But I hope you get the trap that's being set. 00:19:22.03\00:19:24.70 If you can combine certain elements with 00:19:26.16\00:19:30.36 Christianity and make anyone who is a Bible 00:19:30.36\00:19:33.80 believing Christian seem as if they are at odds 00:19:33.80\00:19:37.30 with science and progress. Do you see 00:19:37.30\00:19:41.70 that the trap is being set. 00:19:41.70\00:19:43.23 Paul is arrested for the second time. 00:19:49.10\00:19:51.30 While he's in the dungeon he is asked 00:19:54.00\00:19:58.66 what it is that he would want? 00:19:58.66\00:20:00.90 At the end of the book of 2nd Timothy he says 00:20:02.70\00:20:04.90 he wants his cloak, he wants his, 00:20:04.90\00:20:07.20 he would want something to write with 00:20:07.20\00:20:08.73 and Paul begins to write the book of 2nd Timothy. 00:20:08.73\00:20:12.06 Let me give you an overview of the next 00:20:13.60\00:20:15.46 three nights. We're gonna go through 00:20:15.46\00:20:17.60 the book of 2nd Timothy in three parts. 00:20:17.60\00:20:20.73 We're gonna look at the major players 00:20:20.73\00:20:22.33 out of the book of 2nd Timothy. 00:20:22.33\00:20:24.16 One of course the Apostle Paul himself, 00:20:24.16\00:20:26.30 second of course we're gonna look at Timothy, 00:20:27.16\00:20:29.70 the third we will also look at Nero the Emperor 00:20:30.56\00:20:33.33 and the Roman Empire. We'll look at Paul 00:20:33.33\00:20:36.26 from a different angle tomorrow night, 00:20:36.26\00:20:38.10 we'll look at Paul as a Prophet. 00:20:38.10\00:20:39.60 We look at the comparison that 00:20:41.30\00:20:43.40 Ellen White and many great historians draw 00:20:43.40\00:20:45.73 between Nero himself and Paul the Apostle. 00:20:45.73\00:20:49.00 Over the next three nights we'll go deep 00:20:49.93\00:20:52.20 into this book, looking not only at what 00:20:52.20\00:20:54.56 is in scripture, but trying to build 00:20:54.56\00:20:56.30 the historical context, because I believe 00:20:56.30\00:20:58.56 this book was written for three separate 00:20:58.56\00:21:00.80 groups of people. One, the book was written for 00:21:00.80\00:21:04.43 Timothy himself obviously. Paul wanted 00:21:04.43\00:21:07.90 to make sure that he left with Timothy 00:21:07.90\00:21:10.10 final words of importance. So that 00:21:10.10\00:21:13.33 Timothy would be armed to deal with 00:21:13.33\00:21:16.00 what he was gonna have to face as Timothy 00:21:16.00\00:21:17.90 advanced to becoming a bishop. 00:21:17.90\00:21:19.36 Secondly of course this book was written for us, 00:21:20.46\00:21:24.73 in fact if I could name the message 00:21:24.73\00:21:28.00 something else I would name it a letter 00:21:28.00\00:21:31.30 to the last generation. Paul is truly warning 00:21:31.30\00:21:36.13 those of us who would be alive 00:21:36.13\00:21:37.76 at the end of time, He is warning us, 00:21:37.76\00:21:41.33 preparing us and instructing us 00:21:41.33\00:21:44.03 in how to survive the difficult days 00:21:44.03\00:21:46.83 that the Christians will have to 00:21:46.83\00:21:48.56 once again survive. Who better to write that 00:21:48.56\00:21:52.56 world map for the end of the world 00:21:52.56\00:21:54.43 then the Apostle who bore the brunt of 00:21:54.43\00:21:59.16 Pagan Rome's torture. But finally and maybe 00:21:59.16\00:22:06.06 most interestingly in some ways, 00:22:06.06\00:22:07.80 this letter was also written to the 00:22:07.80\00:22:11.76 Roman Empire itself in fact on Saturday night 00:22:11.76\00:22:15.56 I'll show you that I believe that Paul hoped 00:22:15.56\00:22:18.36 that Nero himself would read this letter. 00:22:18.36\00:22:21.50 But first let's deal with Timothy. 00:22:24.56\00:22:26.56 2nd Timothy chapter 1 starting at verse one. 00:22:26.56\00:22:31.00 2nd Timothy chapter 1 starting at verse one. 00:22:32.23\00:22:34.76 The scripture says, Paul, an apostle of 00:22:35.76\00:22:38.06 Jesus Christ, by the will of God, according 00:22:38.06\00:22:40.53 to the promise of life which is in 00:22:40.53\00:22:42.76 Christ Jesus. To Timothy, my dearly 00:22:42.76\00:22:46.53 beloved son: Grace, mercy and peace from God 00:22:46.53\00:22:50.26 the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. 00:22:50.26\00:22:53.00 In the third verse of the book Paul 00:22:54.30\00:22:56.33 is an dungeon, he's probably hungry, 00:22:56.33\00:22:58.73 he is probably been beaten, but look at 00:22:58.73\00:23:01.03 how just three verses and Paul says I thank 00:23:01.03\00:23:04.50 God whom I serve. Let me submit to you 00:23:04.50\00:23:08.66 that torture didn't sway Paul's allegiance 00:23:08.66\00:23:12.76 to God. His being hungry, his being alone, 00:23:12.76\00:23:16.63 his being destitute. Paul knew that 00:23:16.63\00:23:19.50 even in the worst of situations he must thank 00:23:19.50\00:23:23.46 the living God. We'll tell you something 00:23:23.46\00:23:27.30 some of us are fair weather Christians. 00:23:27.30\00:23:30.13 We're happy to serve God when everything 00:23:31.73\00:23:33.60 is going well, but when we're faced with 00:23:33.60\00:23:36.70 adversity there are a lot of Christians 00:23:36.70\00:23:38.66 who quickly began to back track 00:23:38.66\00:23:40.26 and question God. Oh if we had 00:23:40.26\00:23:44.43 the faith of Paul. Instead of questioning 00:23:44.43\00:23:47.60 God we would view every difficult situation 00:23:47.60\00:23:50.96 we find ourselves in as an opportunity, 00:23:50.96\00:23:54.86 as an opportunity to lift up the name of 00:23:56.43\00:23:59.90 Jesus Christ. Paul says, I thank God whom I serve 00:23:59.90\00:24:07.60 from my forefathers with pure conscience 00:24:07.60\00:24:11.26 that without ceasing I have remembrance 00:24:11.26\00:24:13.40 of thee in my prayers night and day. 00:24:13.40\00:24:16.90 In fact he says something profound in 00:24:18.20\00:24:19.96 verse 5 as he introduces this young man Timothy 00:24:19.96\00:24:23.40 he says, when I call to remembrance 00:24:23.40\00:24:25.66 the unfeigned faith that is in thee which dwelt 00:24:25.66\00:24:28.90 first in thy grandmother Lois and thy mother 00:24:28.90\00:24:31.80 Eunice, and I am persuaded that is 00:24:31.80\00:24:34.50 in thee also. You see Timothy was an 00:24:34.50\00:24:38.26 interesting young man. His father was a Greek. 00:24:38.26\00:24:42.30 His mother Eunice is mentioned in chapter 5 00:24:43.16\00:24:45.93 was probably a Jewish. It's clear from the 00:24:45.93\00:24:50.53 book of 2nd Timothy that Timothy was well 00:24:50.53\00:24:53.13 trained in the scripture. In fact 00:24:53.13\00:24:56.53 one of the things I like to tell young people 00:24:56.53\00:24:58.36 based on that verse of scripture is that 00:24:58.36\00:25:01.03 many of us who have been raised 00:25:01.03\00:25:02.86 in the church like Timothy who was raised 00:25:02.86\00:25:05.83 to know God, have been raised with 00:25:05.83\00:25:08.26 a legacy of faith. We've been raised 00:25:08.26\00:25:11.80 with a legacy of faith and probably 00:25:11.80\00:25:14.10 one of the most disheartening things 00:25:14.10\00:25:15.66 that I see in the church is when young people 00:25:15.66\00:25:18.23 take that legacy of faith and just throw 00:25:18.23\00:25:21.93 it away. All of the advantages of being 00:25:21.93\00:25:25.50 sent to Christian Adventist schools, 00:25:25.50\00:25:28.33 growing up in homes where alcohol 00:25:28.33\00:25:30.80 wasn't allowed. Hearing the word of God 00:25:30.80\00:25:33.76 preach from week to week in churches 00:25:33.76\00:25:36.03 and when they come of age, had friends 00:25:36.03\00:25:40.50 like that growing up who would every week 00:25:40.50\00:25:43.00 at church at 13 and 14 years of age 00:25:43.00\00:25:46.23 would remind us, man when I turn 18 brother 00:25:46.23\00:25:49.70 I'm out of here. I'm escaping this place. 00:25:50.60\00:25:54.36 They thought of the church as a jail 00:25:55.30\00:25:57.73 and I praise God that I've lived long enough 00:25:58.70\00:26:01.10 to see many of them that ran out of the church 00:26:01.10\00:26:03.26 come running back in. They've found out that 00:26:03.26\00:26:07.53 real freedom isn't in the world, 00:26:07.53\00:26:09.83 isn't in drugs and illicit sexual affairs, 00:26:09.83\00:26:13.86 it's not in chasing the all mighty Taliban 00:26:13.86\00:26:16.93 but real freedom comes when you can turnover 00:26:16.93\00:26:19.73 your life to Jesus Christ somebody 00:26:19.73\00:26:21.50 ought to say amen. But some of us have been 00:26:21.50\00:26:25.96 given this legacy of faith and I challenge 00:26:25.96\00:26:28.50 those of you who are parents or who will be 00:26:28.50\00:26:30.96 parents that we parent in such a way 00:26:30.96\00:26:34.43 that if Paul was writing about our child. 00:26:35.40\00:26:37.63 He can write this verse about our child. 00:26:38.50\00:26:40.53 The unframed faith that was in Eric Walsh. 00:26:41.40\00:26:45.46 That has now been passed on to his child. 00:26:47.03\00:26:49.46 A legacy of faith has given. 00:26:53.83\00:26:55.60 The Paul goes on and he looks, 00:26:56.53\00:26:58.73 look at verse six. He says that, 00:26:58.73\00:27:01.76 wherefore I put thee in remembrance that 00:27:01.76\00:27:03.80 I will stir up the gift of God which is in thee 00:27:03.80\00:27:06.70 by the putting on my hands. 00:27:06.70\00:27:08.70 For God has not given us the spirit of fear. 00:27:09.50\00:27:13.00 But of power and of love and of a sound mind. 00:27:14.63\00:27:20.63 If you are going to survive 00:27:21.30\00:27:22.96 in the last days, you will not be able to 00:27:22.96\00:27:26.56 survive the last days living 00:27:26.56\00:27:29.20 your life out of fear. Fear is a very poor 00:27:29.20\00:27:35.36 motivator, studies are pretty well documented, 00:27:35.36\00:27:40.16 they're just scaring people with tar 00:27:40.16\00:27:43.23 blackened lungs from cigarettes are 00:27:43.23\00:27:44.93 not enough to help people to be 00:27:44.93\00:27:46.56 motivated to quit smoking. 00:27:46.56\00:27:47.93 Fear only lasts for a little while and in fact 00:27:49.30\00:27:51.43 when you really read the scriptures carefully 00:27:51.43\00:27:53.43 fear is actually the opposite of love, 00:27:53.43\00:27:55.73 because perfect love does what? 00:27:55.73\00:27:57.43 It casts out all fear. The Christian not 00:27:59.00\00:28:03.90 operate out of fear, if you are a 00:28:03.90\00:28:05.93 Sunday Adventist Christian and your 00:28:05.93\00:28:07.80 relationship you live one afraid that 00:28:07.80\00:28:10.36 everyday when you wake up you're gonna 00:28:10.36\00:28:12.06 wake up and mess up and make mistake. 00:28:12.06\00:28:14.10 If you're operating out of fear something is 00:28:14.10\00:28:16.26 wrong with your relationship with 00:28:16.26\00:28:17.63 Jesus Christ. Because God has not given you 00:28:17.63\00:28:22.06 a spirit of fear. The devil wants you 00:28:22.06\00:28:24.00 to be afraid. The devil wants you to be afraid 00:28:24.00\00:28:27.60 that you won't make it. Roger Morneau's 00:28:27.60\00:28:32.03 last book. I'm a big fan of Roger Morneau. 00:28:32.03\00:28:34.20 When I read A Trip Into The Supernatural 00:28:36.13\00:28:37.70 I've to admit it, it was a little hard to 00:28:37.70\00:28:40.43 go to sleep that night, but I'm just being 00:28:40.43\00:28:43.86 honest some of you won't admit that. 00:28:43.86\00:28:45.46 I'll just admit it for you. But I read his book 00:28:45.46\00:28:49.00 Beware of Angels. And there's a powerful part 00:28:49.00\00:28:52.76 in the book where one of the woman who have 00:28:52.76\00:28:54.70 comeback to God and this woman had been dealing 00:28:54.70\00:28:58.03 with demons. I won't get into the story, 00:28:58.03\00:28:59.76 I don't have time, but they've been dealing 00:28:59.76\00:29:01.63 with some demon issues and one of the woman 00:29:01.63\00:29:04.20 who would comeback to God says you know 00:29:04.20\00:29:05.90 Roger Morneau he is interviewing her 00:29:05.90\00:29:07.96 in prison. You know the only time the demons 00:29:07.96\00:29:12.00 comeback is when I question watch this. 00:29:12.00\00:29:14.70 When I question whether or not God has actually 00:29:14.70\00:29:19.30 forgiven me for what I've done. 00:29:19.30\00:29:20.60 Steps to Christ Ellen White warns against 00:29:22.23\00:29:24.73 this idea that when you've, when you've 00:29:24.73\00:29:27.10 repented and turned your sins over it is, 00:29:27.10\00:29:30.40 it is the spirit of fear to go back and wonder 00:29:30.40\00:29:35.40 if God has forgiven you, because now you begin 00:29:35.40\00:29:38.10 to question the power of the blood 00:29:38.10\00:29:40.90 of Jesus Christ and it is, it actually infuses 00:29:40.90\00:29:46.13 power into the enemy against you. 00:29:46.13\00:29:48.66 Let me tell you something. Most of you 00:29:49.66\00:29:53.70 put bleach in a washing machine, 00:29:53.70\00:29:55.43 add a little bit of Tide detergent. 00:29:55.43\00:29:56.90 You don't go back and check half way through 00:29:57.66\00:29:59.70 cycle if the clothes is actually getting clean. 00:29:59.70\00:30:01.70 You've got more faith in Clorox 00:30:03.66\00:30:05.50 and Tide then you do in the blood of 00:30:05.50\00:30:07.10 Jesus Christ. Let me warn you that 00:30:07.10\00:30:12.80 you will live a trapped weekend life 00:30:12.80\00:30:16.10 if you leave your spiritual experience 00:30:16.10\00:30:18.50 afraid of God. We always read John 3:16 00:30:18.50\00:30:25.63 and I love John 3:16, but John 3:17 says, 00:30:25.63\00:30:28.10 For God send not his Son into the world 00:30:28.10\00:30:31.16 to condemn the world, but that the world 00:30:31.16\00:30:34.13 to his Son might be what? Let me tell you 00:30:34.13\00:30:36.56 something I don't doubt because I have 00:30:36.56\00:30:38.73 a stronger belief in Christ's ability 00:30:38.73\00:30:41.50 to save me. Then in the devil's ability 00:30:41.50\00:30:45.86 to take me. Amen. And it manifest, 00:30:45.86\00:30:50.90 look at the verse, loot at the verse, 00:30:50.90\00:30:52.30 God has not given us the spirit of fear, 00:30:52.30\00:30:54.76 but of power Christians ought to function 00:30:54.76\00:30:57.70 out of power. Not pride, but power. 00:30:57.70\00:31:02.66 Let me tell you something, I'm gonna 00:31:04.86\00:31:06.50 get into this tomorrow night a little bit more, 00:31:06.50\00:31:08.20 but I'm on national committees, and I went 00:31:08.20\00:31:10.96 to a recent meeting, a national meeting 00:31:10.96\00:31:12.70 and they had. They brought a high ranking 00:31:12.70\00:31:15.43 Catholic Priest to represent the bishops 00:31:15.43\00:31:17.66 and they brought in people from, 00:31:17.66\00:31:19.36 they worked for focus on a family 00:31:19.36\00:31:21.10 and all these different kind of right wing 00:31:21.10\00:31:24.70 etiologic areas even though I found out 00:31:24.70\00:31:27.43 the Catholic priest ironically were so far 00:31:27.43\00:31:30.00 left I couldn't find them. And as I'm sitting 00:31:30.00\00:31:36.53 there and I'm hearing what the 00:31:36.53\00:31:38.10 U.S. government. I will get into it 00:31:38.10\00:31:40.20 a little more tomorrow night. 00:31:40.20\00:31:41.20 It is planning to do in the area of education 00:31:41.20\00:31:44.90 around sex and sexuality I begin to pray 00:31:44.90\00:31:47.66 and ask God not that I be afraid to speak up, 00:31:47.66\00:31:50.56 because I'm in the presence of people 00:31:50.56\00:31:52.23 who are, who are of influence, 00:31:52.23\00:31:54.36 of dignitaries who run divisions at the centers 00:31:54.36\00:31:57.56 for disease control, but I say Lord 00:31:57.56\00:31:59.36 like Daniel now. Like Joseph now. 00:31:59.36\00:32:03.90 Let me speak for the people of America 00:32:04.80\00:32:07.83 who don't know that demonic forces 00:32:07.83\00:32:10.36 are at work to change the policies 00:32:10.36\00:32:12.56 of this great nation. Christian doesn't 00:32:12.56\00:32:16.30 function out of timidity and fear. 00:32:16.30\00:32:18.86 It's time when you got to stand up and say 00:32:19.86\00:32:22.33 right is right and wrong is wrong. Amen. 00:32:22.33\00:32:26.23 There's way too many chickens in the church. 00:32:26.23\00:32:28.66 Too many namby pamby, yellow bellied cowards 00:32:30.96\00:32:34.80 running around in the church. 00:32:34.80\00:32:36.20 Anything, we don't wanna offend anybody. 00:32:37.16\00:32:39.40 You think you can go to a Muslim school 00:32:43.50\00:32:45.40 and do some of the stuff we allow to happen 00:32:45.40\00:32:46.86 in our schools. We're afraid of everybody now. 00:32:46.86\00:32:52.43 And you know what happens when 00:32:53.23\00:32:54.20 you're afraid of everybody nobody 00:32:54.20\00:32:55.53 respects you. I'm getting ahead of myself, 00:32:55.53\00:33:00.43 we'll wait tomorrow night for that. 00:33:00.43\00:33:02.03 But the scripture said, he's given us power 00:33:05.30\00:33:07.50 and love, the church ought to function 00:33:07.50\00:33:10.10 out of love. I was talking to a 00:33:10.10\00:33:12.40 group of Pastors. We meet together, 00:33:12.40\00:33:14.26 we played basketball in Southern California. 00:33:14.26\00:33:16.53 We were talking and I said you know 00:33:16.53\00:33:18.03 we want to do community service 00:33:18.03\00:33:20.20 and we should do community service, 00:33:20.20\00:33:21.53 but I tell you what. We ought to do 00:33:21.53\00:33:23.33 community service simply because we love 00:33:23.33\00:33:25.50 the community. There ought to be no strings 00:33:25.50\00:33:29.43 attached. We're ought not do community service 00:33:29.43\00:33:31.33 and expect by default people are gonna be 00:33:31.33\00:33:34.66 baptized into the church. In other words 00:33:34.66\00:33:37.43 we ought to feed people who are hungry in our 00:33:37.43\00:33:39.13 communities simply because they're hungry 00:33:39.13\00:33:41.23 and we love them. Amen. Because we maybe 00:33:41.23\00:33:44.26 planting a seed that doesn't generate 00:33:44.26\00:33:46.00 or germinate for 10 or 15 years, 00:33:46.00\00:33:49.30 but we've to function out of love 00:33:50.10\00:33:52.26 for the people around us. Paul is warning us, 00:33:52.26\00:33:55.66 as he is warning Timothy that fear isn't how 00:33:55.66\00:33:58.26 you function, love is how you function. 00:33:58.26\00:34:00.43 But the last thing he says in verse seven 00:34:02.23\00:34:04.20 is powerful. The last thing he says 00:34:04.20\00:34:07.13 is powerful. He says, God has not given us 00:34:07.13\00:34:09.80 the spirit of fear. He says but of power of 00:34:09.80\00:34:13.23 love and of a sound mind. As a physician 00:34:13.23\00:34:17.30 one of the things I found interesting is 00:34:17.30\00:34:18.86 how many people would come to me. 00:34:18.86\00:34:20.46 When I used to work in Urgent Care 00:34:20.46\00:34:22.46 I don't work there anymore I miss it. 00:34:22.46\00:34:23.80 Still on, still on faculty there, 00:34:23.80\00:34:25.80 but and people would come in 00:34:25.80\00:34:27.93 and their only complaint would be 00:34:28.90\00:34:33.66 they're anxious, they're afraid. 00:34:33.66\00:34:36.46 I mean you would see people come in 00:34:36.46\00:34:38.20 and they were afraid of both options. 00:34:38.20\00:34:40.40 Now let me explain that. Young ladies would 00:34:40.40\00:34:43.63 come in and they would want me 00:34:43.63\00:34:44.80 to medicate them, because they were afraid 00:34:44.80\00:34:48.40 to get married. But they were also 00:34:48.40\00:34:51.83 afraid to stay single. There are people who are 00:34:51.83\00:34:57.96 afraid to take the job and afraid to stay 00:34:57.96\00:35:01.03 unemployed. We live in a society of fear, 00:35:01.03\00:35:05.73 anxiety disorders have taken over 00:35:06.66\00:35:08.76 and people come in and they ask for SSRIs 00:35:08.76\00:35:11.70 Serotonin Selective Reuptake Inhibitors, 00:35:11.70\00:35:14.86 the most famous of which is Prozac 00:35:14.86\00:35:16.63 and they figure if you write them 00:35:16.63\00:35:18.10 a prescription for the magic pill. 00:35:18.10\00:35:19.96 All of their problems will go away 00:35:22.36\00:35:24.60 and you know what I used to do. 00:35:25.76\00:35:26.80 I still love doing this, that's why I love 00:35:26.80\00:35:27.96 working at Loma Linda, because I get my 00:35:27.96\00:35:30.00 prescription pad. I'd get a copy of book 00:35:30.00\00:35:32.13 Steps to Christ. And I would write on the 00:35:32.13\00:35:36.13 prescription pad. I said I will write you 00:35:36.13\00:35:38.26 a better medicine than Prozac. 00:35:38.26\00:35:40.86 And I would write 2nd Timothy chapter one 00:35:41.60\00:35:45.40 and verse seven. Amen. I want you to take this 00:35:46.13\00:35:49.23 TID which means three times a day. 00:35:49.23\00:35:52.80 And, and, and you don't have to take it 00:35:52.80\00:35:55.60 with food in fact you're better off fasting 00:35:55.60\00:35:58.43 when you take this medicine. Amen. 00:35:58.43\00:36:01.80 A sound mind is what we need, but yet we live 00:36:04.73\00:36:07.36 in a time when people are so addicted to 00:36:07.36\00:36:09.86 substances and media and pornography 00:36:09.86\00:36:13.30 and everything else and I do studies 00:36:13.30\00:36:15.70 where I talk about and I got the idea from 00:36:15.70\00:36:17.73 one of our great preaching leader 00:36:17.73\00:36:19.40 Doug Batchelor about the body 00:36:19.40\00:36:21.56 as, as, as the temple in and when I went into it 00:36:21.56\00:36:24.00 as a physician I looked at the frontal lobe 00:36:24.00\00:36:26.03 of the brain and the human brain is 00:36:26.03\00:36:27.96 33 percent frontal lobe. And when I looked at it. 00:36:27.96\00:36:33.00 If you line up a sanctuary, you imagine 00:36:34.60\00:36:37.26 up to the body, the frontal lobe, 00:36:37.26\00:36:38.90 the reasoning part of your brain, right 00:36:38.90\00:36:40.23 here behind your forehead boom. 00:36:40.23\00:36:42.06 It's like the most Holy place. 00:36:43.76\00:36:45.66 This is where all of the most complex reasoning 00:36:45.66\00:36:49.16 where GABA, Dopamine, Acetylcholine, 00:36:49.16\00:36:52.06 adrenaline were all of these known chemicals 00:36:52.06\00:36:54.40 are released in your brain. These are what 00:36:54.40\00:36:56.13 make you have your being, your sensibility, 00:36:56.13\00:36:58.50 make you think. It's the frontal lobe 00:36:58.50\00:37:01.00 of your brain where cocaine and alcohol 00:37:01.00\00:37:03.13 and caffeine and nicotine all have 00:37:03.13\00:37:05.46 their affect. Oh I don't miss this. 00:37:05.46\00:37:08.43 If this is where all of them have their affect. 00:37:08.43\00:37:11.23 In fact what you do when people become addicts 00:37:12.16\00:37:16.43 and get on these substances as mild as 00:37:16.43\00:37:18.90 caffeine is considered to be or as harsh as 00:37:18.90\00:37:21.40 cocaine is considered to be. 00:37:21.40\00:37:22.73 What you actually you do is block 00:37:22.73\00:37:24.80 what the most holy place is made for, 00:37:24.80\00:37:27.50 which is, for the kind of glory of God 00:37:27.50\00:37:29.63 to fall on. The reason the devil wants 00:37:29.63\00:37:35.16 the world addicted to substances 00:37:35.16\00:37:37.30 and pornographic and movies and music 00:37:37.30\00:37:39.80 and all the rest of the addicted behaviors, 00:37:39.80\00:37:42.43 gambling is because if your mind is occupied, 00:37:42.43\00:37:46.26 the part of your brain where the Holy Spirit 00:37:48.90\00:37:52.06 is supposed to plug in and what the Bible says 00:37:52.06\00:37:55.96 the love of Christ can strain at us, 00:37:55.96\00:37:58.06 because GABA is one of those chemicals 00:37:58.06\00:37:59.90 in your brain that when it is working right 00:37:59.90\00:38:01.90 it literally helps you to behave properly. 00:38:01.90\00:38:04.50 It is a constraining element, 00:38:06.26\00:38:08.46 but alcohol and marijuana both block 00:38:09.33\00:38:11.70 the release of GABA, so the frontal lobe, 00:38:11.70\00:38:14.16 the sanctuary model being used like 00:38:14.16\00:38:17.13 the holy place in the, the most holy place 00:38:17.13\00:38:19.53 in the sanctuary. If you're on that stuff 00:38:19.53\00:38:21.83 you block out. The affects of the 00:38:21.83\00:38:26.43 living God in your life hence the scripture says 00:38:26.43\00:38:30.23 the drunk will not inherit the 00:38:30.23\00:38:33.56 kingdom of God. Because you can't 00:38:33.56\00:38:38.96 have a sound mind. Yet our young people, 00:38:38.96\00:38:45.90 more and more of them are getting caught up 00:38:47.80\00:38:49.70 and you know the devil's slick. 00:38:49.70\00:38:51.46 He couldn't get some of us with marijuana, 00:38:52.26\00:38:54.83 he couldn't get some of us with alcohol, 00:38:55.66\00:38:57.33 but he created these lattes 00:38:57.33\00:39:01.36 and caffeine-filled beverages and you know 00:39:01.36\00:39:05.63 you start studying you need to stay awake 00:39:05.63\00:39:07.80 at night, so you break out some Mountain Dew. 00:39:07.80\00:39:10.30 So of you are laughing, with a guilty 00:39:11.96\00:39:13.60 looking laugh. And I understand, 00:39:13.60\00:39:19.16 I've been a student. I understand 00:39:19.16\00:39:20.56 the stress is, but understand that 00:39:20.56\00:39:23.00 the devil just wants an end. A sound mind, 00:39:23.00\00:39:28.63 everyone of our churches should have a way 00:39:28.63\00:39:32.06 for people who are addicted to receive 00:39:32.06\00:39:34.83 the counseling and the help they need 00:39:34.83\00:39:37.06 to get off of whatever substance 00:39:37.06\00:39:39.30 or behavior is addicting them. 00:39:39.30\00:39:40.86 Our churches are incomplete in their 00:39:41.73\00:39:44.33 ministry if we don't have that. 00:39:44.33\00:39:46.20 Because if you bring people in with 00:39:46.20\00:39:48.40 their addiction, the chemical addictions 00:39:48.40\00:39:50.46 will leave a door open for the devil 00:39:50.46\00:39:53.10 to continually get to them. 00:39:53.10\00:39:55.00 Paul says in verse 8. Be not thou therefore 00:39:58.73\00:40:03.90 ashamed of the testimony of our Lord. 00:40:03.90\00:40:07.60 Nor of me his prisoner. Let me tell you that 00:40:08.43\00:40:13.03 Paul was not afraid. He was okay with 00:40:14.63\00:40:18.73 being a prisoner. He understood 00:40:18.73\00:40:21.26 the importance of suffering for God. 00:40:21.26\00:40:23.96 In fact when you jump to chapter 2 00:40:25.33\00:40:27.26 and I've gonna jump down to verse three 00:40:29.76\00:40:31.36 of chapter 2 for time sake. 00:40:31.36\00:40:32.93 Chapter 2 and verse 3 of 2nd Timothy 00:40:33.76\00:40:36.16 Paul as he's in his dungeon writing 00:40:36.16\00:40:38.03 this letter to Timothy. He says in verse 3 00:40:38.03\00:40:41.30 of chapter 2. He says, Thou therefore endure 00:40:41.30\00:40:44.16 hardness as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. 00:40:44.16\00:40:48.16 He said to me you got to be able to take some 00:40:49.13\00:40:50.73 licks if you're gonna be a soldier. 00:40:50.73\00:40:52.03 No man that warreth entangleth himself 00:40:53.26\00:40:56.46 with the affairs of this life. 00:40:56.46\00:40:58.76 That he may please him who have chosen him 00:40:58.76\00:41:02.00 to be a soldier. Let me tell you something 00:41:02.00\00:41:04.50 when you joined the church. Now let me, 00:41:04.50\00:41:07.30 let me couch this just right. 00:41:07.30\00:41:09.10 I think it's important that the church has 00:41:09.10\00:41:11.00 social aspects to it. I think it's important 00:41:11.00\00:41:14.03 that we have potlucks and fellowships 00:41:14.03\00:41:15.93 and, and, and other things like that. 00:41:15.93\00:41:18.10 I think that's critical. Because it's important 00:41:18.10\00:41:20.53 that we don't need, we can kind what we need 00:41:20.53\00:41:22.80 in the church and wouldn't have to go out 00:41:22.80\00:41:24.16 in the world looking for it. 00:41:24.16\00:41:25.23 So I think those things are important, 00:41:25.23\00:41:27.36 the things like GYC. When we have, 00:41:27.36\00:41:29.33 we have a free time and walking us 00:41:29.33\00:41:31.50 you guys sitting on tables and talking as 00:41:31.50\00:41:33.00 important. But understand you 00:41:33.00\00:41:34.93 didn't joined a potluck club when you 00:41:34.93\00:41:36.83 joined a church. I know some folk they live for 00:41:36.83\00:41:40.30 the potluck. I know folk that. 00:41:40.30\00:41:42.23 In California there are so many wonderful, 00:41:42.23\00:41:44.66 beautiful different ethnicities you can, 00:41:44.66\00:41:47.40 you can just do a rotation. Korean church 00:41:47.40\00:41:49.83 this week, Korean potluck. Filipino church 00:41:49.83\00:41:52.93 next week, Filipino potluck. Spanish church 00:41:52.93\00:41:55.60 the next week, Spanish potluck, 00:41:55.60\00:41:57.73 but you didn't join a potluck club. 00:41:57.73\00:42:00.06 You've joined an army. You've joined the army 00:42:00.06\00:42:04.26 of the living God. Amen. And it's important 00:42:04.26\00:42:09.60 as soldiers in the army of the living God, 00:42:09.60\00:42:12.50 that we understand that this earth 00:42:13.36\00:42:16.20 is not our home. I had a friend who was in Iraq. 00:42:16.20\00:42:22.26 And he was in Saddam Hussein's palace 00:42:23.16\00:42:25.46 emailing me few years back. He was telling me 00:42:25.46\00:42:29.53 how the toilets were gold encrusted 00:42:29.53\00:42:31.76 and all of the fancy things 00:42:31.76\00:42:33.53 that were in there. Thank you. 00:42:33.53\00:42:34.90 And he said one of the things that he learned 00:42:34.90\00:42:38.63 in combat. Well he is not active combat. 00:42:38.63\00:42:43.93 Is that when you're out there they are actually 00:42:44.43\00:42:46.03 fighting I mean your fighting it's a terrible 00:42:46.03\00:42:49.90 thing to think about home while 00:42:49.90\00:42:52.30 you're fighting. While you're fighting 00:42:52.30\00:42:55.03 your mind has to be only be on the fight. 00:42:55.03\00:42:56.80 Paul says to Timothy look be careful that 00:42:58.46\00:43:01.73 you don't make the earth your home. 00:43:01.73\00:43:03.16 Be careful that your thoughts aren't here, 00:43:03.90\00:43:06.06 you are not more concerned with moving up 00:43:06.06\00:43:08.06 the corporate ladder. More concerned with how 00:43:08.06\00:43:11.60 good looking your spouse, somebody 00:43:11.60\00:43:13.43 ought to say amen? Amen. Because some of us 00:43:13.43\00:43:17.53 we're doing the genetic surveys of individuals 00:43:17.53\00:43:19.76 to figure out how good looking our children 00:43:19.76\00:43:22.16 are gonna be. When you're a soldier in the 00:43:22.16\00:43:28.43 army of God the earth is not what captures you. 00:43:28.43\00:43:33.96 Let me tell you something, after burying 00:43:34.83\00:43:36.90 relatives the last four, five years in a row 00:43:36.90\00:43:39.56 I can tell you at every funeral was the casket 00:43:39.56\00:43:43.30 is dropped into the hole is that Lord God 00:43:43.30\00:43:46.13 remind me on a daily bases. There is nothing 00:43:46.13\00:43:50.26 in this earth that can be afforded to me. 00:43:50.26\00:43:52.63 That replaces what God has in store for me. 00:43:52.63\00:43:56.43 Because you won't be a good soldier 00:43:57.40\00:43:59.40 if this is your home. We jump down to verse 15 00:43:59.40\00:44:06.56 of chapter 2 where Paul says, 00:44:07.96\00:44:11.43 Study to show yourself approved unto God, 00:44:11.43\00:44:13.90 a workman that needs not to be ashamed, 00:44:14.60\00:44:17.20 rightly dividing the word of truth. 00:44:17.20\00:44:20.56 He says but shun profane and vain babbling, 00:44:21.40\00:44:25.93 for they will increase unto more ungodliness. 00:44:26.56\00:44:30.06 It sounds like Paul knew what the top 40 would 00:44:30.86\00:44:35.26 look like in 2010 at the end of the year. 00:44:35.26\00:44:37.93 The music of this world today literally is 00:44:39.40\00:44:42.20 almost described here. It is literally profane 00:44:42.20\00:44:47.26 and vain everybody bragging about 00:44:47.96\00:44:51.23 what they had and what they can get. 00:44:51.23\00:44:53.06 Who they are and how much of a 00:44:53.06\00:44:55.16 rock star they are. But Paul says don't do that, 00:44:55.16\00:44:59.30 study to show yourself approved unto God. 00:44:59.30\00:45:03.83 Rightly dividing the word of truth, 00:45:05.93\00:45:07.86 everything you do your studying, 00:45:07.86\00:45:09.56 did you know that. Every television program 00:45:09.56\00:45:12.60 you watch, every movie, every book you read, 00:45:12.60\00:45:14.50 everything you do you're constantly 00:45:14.50\00:45:16.16 and always studying, the human brain 00:45:16.16\00:45:18.23 is so complex that everything we taken 00:45:18.23\00:45:20.60 in is permanently filed and stored. 00:45:20.60\00:45:22.86 As people will ask, well why I can't 00:45:23.66\00:45:24.93 get it back when I wanna take a test. 00:45:24.93\00:45:26.50 Well usually the reason people can't retrieve 00:45:26.50\00:45:28.53 information for tests they store too much 00:45:28.53\00:45:30.66 of the junk in front of the stuff 00:45:30.66\00:45:31.76 they need to get to. So it's not enough to 00:45:31.76\00:45:36.53 coming to church once a week and be filled up. 00:45:36.53\00:45:38.73 And then go back can be filled up with the world 00:45:38.73\00:45:41.53 you have a six and half days of the week. 00:45:41.53\00:45:43.70 You won't ever be able to get the stuff 00:45:44.43\00:45:46.63 you need to get to when you need to get to it. 00:45:46.63\00:45:48.73 He says study to show yourself approved 00:45:49.33\00:45:52.16 not to men, but to God. He says in verse 20 00:45:52.16\00:45:59.66 in a great house there are not only 00:46:01.16\00:46:03.03 vessels of gold and of silver, 00:46:03.03\00:46:04.50 but also wood and a worth some to honor 00:46:05.33\00:46:09.43 and some to dishonor for men therefore perch 00:46:09.43\00:46:12.03 himself from these he shall be a vessel 00:46:12.03\00:46:14.73 unto honor sanctified and meet for the 00:46:14.73\00:46:17.50 master's use and prepared on to 00:46:17.50\00:46:20.26 every good work. The Great House 00:46:20.26\00:46:22.13 is the church. And I warn people sometimes 00:46:22.13\00:46:26.66 when you come to church you expect that 00:46:26.66\00:46:28.16 everybody in church gonna kind and loving 00:46:28.16\00:46:30.06 and very Christian. Paul is warning Timothy 00:46:30.06\00:46:33.13 and he is warning us that in church 00:46:33.13\00:46:35.00 there are people how are made out of 00:46:35.00\00:46:36.03 golden silver spiritually. 00:46:36.03\00:46:37.56 But in church there are also be 00:46:37.56\00:46:39.20 who are made of wood and clay in fact 00:46:39.20\00:46:42.40 there are people who are made out of Tupperware 00:46:42.40\00:46:44.20 and Styrofoam in some churches. 00:46:44.20\00:46:47.03 And what happens is those people will say 00:46:48.40\00:46:50.60 one wrong word to you and you know 00:46:50.60\00:46:53.40 what happens people run away from church. 00:46:53.40\00:46:55.60 Don't be so gullible. Understand that 00:46:55.60\00:46:59.16 the devil is going to send his people to 00:46:59.16\00:47:01.06 church as well, but I like what Paul does here 00:47:01.06\00:47:05.86 for Timothy, because Paul even says 00:47:05.86\00:47:08.56 even the people who are in church 00:47:08.56\00:47:10.10 for the wrong reason can be saved. 00:47:10.10\00:47:11.86 Watch this, he says in verse 24, 00:47:12.76\00:47:15.93 And the servant of the Lord must not strive; 00:47:15.93\00:47:19.50 but be gentle unto all men, 00:47:19.50\00:47:21.20 apt to teach, patient. In meekness instructing 00:47:21.20\00:47:25.80 those that oppose themselves; 00:47:25.80\00:47:28.16 if God peradventure will give them repentance 00:47:28.83\00:47:32.43 to the acknowledging of the truth. 00:47:32.43\00:47:34.63 Watch verse 26, its powerful, 00:47:34.63\00:47:37.53 And that they may recover themselves 00:47:37.53\00:47:39.90 out of the snare of the devil, 00:47:39.90\00:47:42.00 who are taken captive by him at his will. 00:47:42.00\00:47:46.80 The good soldier is a specialist 00:47:49.03\00:47:52.70 in reconnaissance. Amen. The good soldier 00:47:52.70\00:47:56.60 specializes in finding those that have 00:47:56.60\00:47:59.60 drafted away from God. How have given upon 00:47:59.60\00:48:01.70 God, the good soldier goes on Reconnaissance 00:48:01.70\00:48:04.66 missions and gets back for God 00:48:04.66\00:48:06.73 what's been lost. You see some of us 00:48:06.73\00:48:09.50 we've been so insolated. We don't want to go 00:48:09.50\00:48:13.23 out and I mean in sometimes you have 00:48:13.23\00:48:15.20 to stay awake, if it's your old past 00:48:15.20\00:48:17.13 and a place you used to be maybe ought not to be 00:48:17.90\00:48:19.96 the one that goes back. But don't be afraid 00:48:19.96\00:48:22.73 there's somebody else to go, somebody else 00:48:22.73\00:48:24.06 to go get your cousins. Don't be afraid 00:48:24.06\00:48:26.90 there's somebody else to go get your old friends 00:48:26.90\00:48:29.13 from high school. Don't be afraid to go back. 00:48:29.13\00:48:32.63 We are in a reconnaissance 00:48:32.63\00:48:34.56 state of mind. We are looking for people 00:48:34.56\00:48:36.83 who can be redeemed, why? Because we have 00:48:36.83\00:48:40.10 been redeemed. And guess what if God can 00:48:40.10\00:48:43.30 redeem a wretch like me. I have full confidence 00:48:43.30\00:48:47.40 that there is nothing on this planet, 00:48:47.40\00:48:49.60 no one on this planet that cannot be redeemed. 00:48:49.60\00:48:53.26 The good soldier is on a Reconnaissance mission. 00:48:55.10\00:48:58.40 And a good soldier loves to see when the devil 00:48:59.30\00:49:02.20 had someone. And God is able to bring them 00:49:02.20\00:49:05.96 back to him. The story is told of an earthquake 00:49:05.96\00:49:10.26 that happened in Armenia. A father was 00:49:11.10\00:49:16.40 taking his son to school one day. 00:49:17.16\00:49:19.20 And as the father is taking 00:49:20.90\00:49:22.33 his son to school. He drops the young boy 00:49:22.33\00:49:26.86 at the front of the elementary school. 00:49:26.86\00:49:30.33 The father normally cannot get back in time 00:49:31.53\00:49:34.20 to pick up his son, so this particular day 00:49:34.20\00:49:36.83 the young boy says, daddy promise me, 00:49:36.83\00:49:39.36 promise me that you will be back to get me today 00:49:39.36\00:49:43.93 at the school. The young boy's name was Armon. 00:49:43.93\00:49:49.36 The father says Armon, I promise, 00:49:52.23\00:49:54.93 I will be back to get you. And the father 00:49:56.00\00:50:00.56 arrives at his factory and begins to work, 00:50:00.56\00:50:03.10 the ground begins to sway, and the building 00:50:04.20\00:50:07.63 begins to sway. The factor is damaged 00:50:07.63\00:50:10.00 the father runs outside. He looks around 00:50:10.00\00:50:15.30 and most of his co-workers are okay, 00:50:15.30\00:50:17.00 but as he begins to look around the city 00:50:17.00\00:50:19.20 as the earthquake begins to settle down 00:50:19.20\00:50:21.03 he sees that there is seriously damage 00:50:21.03\00:50:22.96 to much of the buildings around. 00:50:24.73\00:50:27.30 Father decides that he needs to go back 00:50:29.90\00:50:32.63 to the school and look for his son to see 00:50:32.63\00:50:34.26 what happened. He begins to run back across town 00:50:34.26\00:50:39.00 over the rubble to the school. 00:50:39.00\00:50:41.10 When he gets to the school, parents have 00:50:42.50\00:50:44.36 already began to gather around the building 00:50:44.36\00:50:46.63 where it once stood, now a pile of rubble. 00:50:46.63\00:50:49.30 Parents are weeping, crying. 00:50:49.30\00:50:52.90 This father steps back and looks around for 00:50:55.10\00:50:58.36 landmarks whatever is left and figures out 00:50:58.36\00:51:00.76 where his son's classroom would 00:51:00.76\00:51:02.06 have been and climbs up to the top of the rubble 00:51:02.06\00:51:04.70 gets to the top and begins to take 00:51:04.70\00:51:06.76 one piece of rubble a time and throw it aside. 00:51:06.76\00:51:10.36 The parents say what are you doing up there? 00:51:14.93\00:51:17.13 Are you crazy they're all dead, come down. 00:51:17.80\00:51:21.83 The father doesn't pay them any mind 00:51:23.50\00:51:25.16 and he just continues tossing it aside. 00:51:25.16\00:51:28.60 Firemen and police come, fireman says, 00:51:29.43\00:51:33.80 it's not safe get down. He ignores them 00:51:33.80\00:51:36.80 and just keeps tossing the rubble aside. 00:51:36.80\00:51:40.46 Twelve hours later he's still there, 00:51:44.36\00:51:46.13 16 hours later he is still there, 00:51:47.10\00:51:49.73 24 hours later he's still there. 00:51:50.40\00:51:53.46 Hands now bloody from the twisted metal 00:51:53.46\00:51:56.83 and the sharp rubble, but he keep 00:51:56.83\00:51:58.90 throwing it aside. Thirty six hours later 00:51:58.90\00:52:04.36 the father is there spent, hungry, thirsty, 00:52:05.23\00:52:10.60 working to remove the rubble. 00:52:10.60\00:52:13.03 In the 36th hour when all hope would seem 00:52:13.80\00:52:17.23 to have been lost he picks up a piece of 00:52:17.23\00:52:19.20 rubble and tosses into the side 00:52:19.20\00:52:21.23 and sees a dark cavern.
