Psychologists tell 00:00:25.23\00:00:27.56 us that the job that you get out of college 00:00:27.56\00:00:29.90 is directly related to your IQ. 00:00:29.90\00:00:33.10 And there is a lot of other things directly 00:00:34.50\00:00:36.16 related to your IQ, including how long you 00:00:36.16\00:00:39.06 live, in fact in the new scientific studies they 00:00:39.06\00:00:41.76 are now having to put that in there, in fact 00:00:41.76\00:00:44.50 just last week, a study was done and published 00:00:44.50\00:00:47.70 in the journal circulation showing that 00:00:47.70\00:00:51.06 IQ was the second most important factor to 00:00:51.06\00:00:56.03 how long you're going to live over another 00:00:56.03\00:00:59.60 lifestyle factor that we'll talk about here in 00:00:59.60\00:01:02.23 little bit. So, intelligence is 00:01:02.23\00:01:04.00 related also to longevity and how long your 00:01:04.00\00:01:06.86 success will be. What is the definition of IQ, 00:01:07.13\00:01:09.96 it's your capacity to learn, retain and apply 00:01:09.96\00:01:14.16 knowledge. All three of those things and its 00:01:14.16\00:01:18.80 not just your capacity to learn, you have to 00:01:18.80\00:01:20.80 Retain it, that means you have to have a 00:01:20.80\00:01:22.50 memory, the temporal lobe of the brain has to 00:01:22.70\00:01:25.00 be working and you also have to be able to 00:01:25.00\00:01:27.83 apply that knowledge in your daily life and 00:01:27.83\00:01:30.66 its often measured by an IQ test. 00:01:30.66\00:01:32.86 How many of you have had an IQ test in this 00:01:32.86\00:01:35.06 row? Wow! I would say the majority of 00:01:35.06\00:01:38.23 Australians have not had their IQ measured 00:01:38.23\00:01:41.76 and I am wondering why? But I won't go into 00:01:43.16\00:01:48.80 the possibilities as to why you haven't had 00:01:48.80\00:01:50.90 yours measured. It's related somewhat to 00:01:50.90\00:01:53.83 academic performance, not completely there is 00:01:53.83\00:01:58.00 something called EQ emotional intelligence, 00:01:58.00\00:02:00.93 it's also very much related to academic 00:02:00.93\00:02:02.93 performance and that has to do with 00:02:02.93\00:02:04.33 motivation. Motivation is separate from IQ, 00:02:04.33\00:02:07.16 but if you have motivation and you have 00:02:08.23\00:02:10.40 IQ it's very directly related to your GPA or 00:02:10.40\00:02:14.53 your academic performance. 00:02:14.53\00:02:16.53 Now, there are some myths about IQ that 00:02:17.00\00:02:19.16 need to be cleared up here today in this 00:02:19.16\00:02:22.00 subject about intelligence, one of 00:02:22.00\00:02:24.03 the myths is genetics is all that matters. 00:02:24.03\00:02:27.80 Now we do know genetics is important and it is 00:02:29.40\00:02:32.63 clear that if your mother and father had high 00:02:32.63\00:02:35.56 IQ there is greater chance that you will have 00:02:35.56\00:02:37.60 it. But its not at all this sole determinant of IQ. 00:02:37.60\00:02:44.00 Another myth says there is nothing you can 00:02:44.60\00:02:46.30 do about it after age 18, and one of those, 00:02:46.30\00:02:50.26 one of the reasons why that myth is 00:02:50.83\00:02:52.43 perpetuated is many 18 year olds in America 00:02:52.43\00:02:56.20 have had their IQ measured, normally you 00:02:56.20\00:02:57.93 have it measured your junior or senior year of 00:02:57.93\00:03:01.16 high school and then they will out of 00:03:01.16\00:03:04.66 curiosity try to measure it after age 30 because 00:03:04.66\00:03:08.20 they have learned so much they would just 00:03:08.20\00:03:10.33 share that their IQ has improved. 00:03:10.33\00:03:12.46 And then when they take the IQ test they 00:03:13.70\00:03:15.63 find out it's the same in most instances, 00:03:15.63\00:03:18.76 it's the same not because we are not measuring 00:03:19.16\00:03:21.40 knowledge. Yes, that 30-year-old has 00:03:21.40\00:03:23.30 accumulated a lot of knowledge but its not 00:03:23.30\00:03:25.50 just accumulated knowledge, we're 00:03:25.50\00:03:27.26 measuring the capacity to learn, retain and 00:03:27.26\00:03:29.96 apply new knowledge. And 30-year-olds often 00:03:29.96\00:03:34.13 don't have that much greater than what they 00:03:34.13\00:03:36.90 did at age 18. However they are significant 00:03:36.90\00:03:39.46 exceptions. I remember a young man who actually 00:03:39.46\00:03:44.76 came in to understanding the four message of 00:03:45.03\00:03:48.86 Bible as a result of health in our town of 00:03:48.86\00:03:53.63 Ardmore, Oklahoma. He came in with a 00:03:53.63\00:03:57.03 vegetarian restaurant there and inquired more 00:03:57.03\00:03:59.60 about the truths of God. He was interested in 00:03:59.60\00:04:01.96 his personal health and he adopted that 00:04:01.96\00:04:04.76 lifestyle, the vegetarian lifestyle and then he 00:04:05.23\00:04:09.10 ended up becoming a fully baptized member 00:04:09.10\00:04:12.63 of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, but he 00:04:12.63\00:04:15.40 had an issue and part of his issue was IQ. 00:04:15.40\00:04:19.93 Nice looking man, tall, handsome, 00:04:19.93\00:04:22.83 great personality but he did not do well in 00:04:23.56\00:04:27.46 school. He had learned enough to learn the 00:04:27.46\00:04:30.36 Gospel and accept that, but he had a desire to 00:04:30.36\00:04:34.53 really excel and I remember talking to him 00:04:34.83\00:04:38.10 he was coming to me wondering how he could 00:04:39.13\00:04:42.83 excel more in school. And I told him you 00:04:43.26\00:04:46.36 know, maybe first you ought to go to place 00:04:46.36\00:04:49.40 like Mission College where you can learn 00:04:49.40\00:04:52.20 more of the deep truths of word of the God 00:04:52.20\00:04:54.56 and he did that. He went there for six months 00:04:55.70\00:04:57.86 and he enjoyed his time there, but I remember 00:04:57.86\00:05:01.13 calling the director of that school Louie 00:05:01.13\00:05:02.90 Torres, about half way through the course and 00:05:02.90\00:05:05.63 I said tell us, tell me how Les is going, 00:05:05.63\00:05:09.26 he said, you know I am not sure he is gonna 00:05:09.26\00:05:11.96 make it. He is struggling and he is getting some 00:05:11.96\00:05:16.53 of the lowest grades in our classes but he is 00:05:16.53\00:05:18.96 barely, barely surviving. And he says I am 00:05:19.20\00:05:23.20 hoping that he is gonna pull through. 00:05:23.20\00:05:24.90 And at the end he did pull through, he actually 00:05:27.06\00:05:28.70 raised his grades enough, he wasn't by any 00:05:28.70\00:05:31.10 means in the top half of his class. He was in 00:05:31.10\00:05:33.16 the bottom half of his class at Mission 00:05:33.16\00:05:35.13 College, but he learned enough to become a 00:05:35.13\00:05:38.10 Bible worker and he went right into Bible 00:05:38.10\00:05:41.46 work in Colorado. And he was a successful 00:05:41.46\00:05:44.83 Bible worker he had that winning personality 00:05:44.83\00:05:47.30 and that nice appearance that went long with it 00:05:47.30\00:05:49.56 and that helped to make up maybe for some of 00:05:49.56\00:05:51.60 the deficits that he had as far as his IQ was 00:05:51.60\00:05:55.13 concerned. But I remember about a year after 00:05:55.13\00:05:58.16 being in Bible work he came back to me in 00:05:58.16\00:06:01.06 Ardmore, Oklahoma and he says you know 00:06:01.06\00:06:04.40 what I really like to do is to incorporate the 00:06:04.40\00:06:08.60 health message of the Gospel full time. 00:06:08.60\00:06:11.03 I would really like to become a doctor and I 00:06:11.30\00:06:14.73 am thinking Les, there is no way. There is no 00:06:14.73\00:06:19.20 way, I mean in America, I don't know how it 00:06:19.20\00:06:22.76 Is in Australia but on those who try to become 00:06:22.76\00:06:25.73 doctors less than two percent will actually 00:06:25.73\00:06:29.46 make it into medical school and so, you have 00:06:29.46\00:06:34.50 to have a certain IQ to even be able to 00:06:34.50\00:06:39.50 withstand that because of all the information 00:06:39.50\00:06:42.63 that is thrown at you in a four year time period 00:06:42.63\00:06:45.40 that you have to learn. But he says you know I 00:06:45.40\00:06:48.06 really have that desire, so I told them well 00:06:48.06\00:06:50.63 listen to this I gave him as presentation that 00:06:51.43\00:06:53.76 I'm about ready to give you and I said 00:06:53.76\00:06:56.33 incorporate it and really work on it for about a 00:06:56.33\00:06:59.03 year. And I wasn't sure if it was going to be 00:06:59.03\00:07:01.90 successful or not, but he had that desire and I 00:07:01.90\00:07:04.23 didn't want to say no to that desire and so he 00:07:04.23\00:07:07.06 incorporated it. He followed every aspect of 00:07:07.06\00:07:10.96 the message and then he went into the 00:07:10.96\00:07:15.83 pre-med part of things, where he took 00:07:15.83\00:07:17.50 Chemistry and Biology and Physics, and at 00:07:17.50\00:07:20.33 first it was a little rough but then he started 00:07:20.33\00:07:22.53 to excel more and more, and then he took 00:07:22.53\00:07:26.23 his MCAT and now he is in medical school. 00:07:26.23\00:07:30.96 He made it, the top two percent and he is 00:07:32.70\00:07:36.16 having a good time in medical school. 00:07:36.16\00:07:38.43 So, it's a myth that there is nothing that you 00:07:38.93\00:07:40.63 can do after age 18, 'cause he was over 20 by 00:07:40.63\00:07:44.00 the time he first came into the message. 00:07:44.00\00:07:45.96 Another myth, people that are highly 00:07:46.63\00:07:48.73 intelligent are generally irritating to be around. 00:07:48.73\00:07:51.83 That has actually been studied and the study 00:07:54.33\00:07:56.73 show that although some of them are irritating 00:07:56.73\00:07:59.60 to be around, there are no more likely to be 00:07:59.60\00:08:02.83 irritable than people of low IQ or average IQ. 00:08:02.83\00:08:06.06 So irritableness has a lot more to do with EQ 00:08:06.73\00:08:09.20 than IQ and they are not necessarily related. 00:08:09.20\00:08:12.50 Another myth, people that are highly 00:08:13.06\00:08:14.56 intelligent lack common sense and this of 00:08:14.56\00:08:18.26 course it's true in some. Albert Einstein I think 00:08:18.26\00:08:20.86 was a good example and that's maybe how the 00:08:20.86\00:08:22.86 myth was perpetuated. Albert Einstein would 00:08:22.86\00:08:25.30 frequently get lost on his way home. 00:08:25.30\00:08:28.10 And he would just forget about where he was 00:08:30.66\00:08:33.86 at, he was deep in thought and then he would 00:08:33.86\00:08:35.86 have say wait a minute where am I, 00:08:35.86\00:08:37.90 I just passed my house sometime ago. 00:08:37.90\00:08:40.20 And he would have to find it again. 00:08:40.56\00:08:42.96 And then another myth you can't improve it so 00:08:44.36\00:08:46.26 why try, I think we've already dispelled that 00:08:46.26\00:08:48.20 myth because it can be improved upon. 00:08:48.20\00:08:50.10 So, let's talk about how to improve 00:08:50.63\00:08:52.43 intelligence in children and in adults. 00:08:52.43\00:08:55.90 Now what I am going to be presenting to you 00:08:55.90\00:08:58.63 are things that you can do now to improve 00:08:58.63\00:09:01.56 your intelligence and you know I really, 00:09:01.56\00:09:04.70 you know we have limited time, one of 00:09:04.70\00:09:06.33 things I would like to talk about is how you 00:09:06.33\00:09:09.20 can raise you kids to be high IQ. 00:09:09.20\00:09:12.20 There is an environment that's actually started 00:09:12.66\00:09:15.03 in the prenatal and the natal influences and 00:09:15.03\00:09:18.26 then the first five years of life that are 00:09:18.26\00:09:20.53 critically important to how high an IQ your 00:09:20.53\00:09:24.83 own children will have. But that's a whole 00:09:24.83\00:09:26.56 different topic somewhat related, but it is a 00:09:27.20\00:09:29.03 different topic but that will be for another 00:09:29.03\00:09:31.50 time. One is to avoid toxins, toxins to the 00:09:31.50\00:09:35.60 brain will adversely effect IQ and alcohol 00:09:35.60\00:09:40.60 actually effects a certain portion of the 00:09:40.60\00:09:42.70 brain before it effects any other portion of the 00:09:42.70\00:09:44.73 brain. It's called the frontal lobe of the 00:09:44.73\00:09:47.43 brain. This is the area of spirituality, morality 00:09:47.43\00:09:52.00 and the will, it's the area where we make our 00:09:52.00\00:09:54.00 decisions, it's the judgment area of the 00:09:54.00\00:09:56.06 brain, the analytical portion of the brain. 00:09:56.06\00:09:58.13 And when alcohol is on board in fact in 00:10:00.26\00:10:02.56 Australia the legal limit of alcohol 00:10:02.56\00:10:04.73 intoxication is 0.05 percent. 00:10:04.73\00:10:07.86 And I know you have a major problem with 00:10:09.20\00:10:11.10 this in this country, because I was leaving the 00:10:11.10\00:10:14.53 airport I came into Sydney the first time on 00:10:14.53\00:10:19.03 Sunday night and I, the taxi driver picked me 00:10:19.03\00:10:23.43 up and the police had made a line out of the 00:10:23.43\00:10:27.00 airport measuring everyone that came out 00:10:27.00\00:10:29.50 and having them blow into a machine to make 00:10:29.50\00:10:31.83 sure alcohol wasn't on board. Everyone had to 00:10:31.83\00:10:34.76 blow before they could go and this taxi driver 00:10:34.76\00:10:38.76 fortunately passed the test, I was glad to 00:10:38.76\00:10:40.70 see that but studies show that you're at 0.05 00:10:40.70\00:10:46.00 ercent and the police man pulls you over and 00:10:46.00\00:10:48.80 your right at that legal limit, you will you able 00:10:48.80\00:10:51.03 to walk a straight line, you actually will. 00:10:51.03\00:10:54.86 You can walk a straight line, in fact if you're 00:10:55.46\00:10:57.50 skilled at doing so, you can hit a curve ball out 00:10:57.80\00:11:01.00 of a baseball park at that limit. So why is it 00:11:01.00\00:11:07.43 then that your ten times as likely to get into an 00:11:07.43\00:11:09.43 automobile accident. 00:11:09.43\00:11:10.46 It's not your coordination, 00:11:12.96\00:11:14.03 your cerebellum is working fine. 00:11:14.40\00:11:15.90 The problem is your judgment and that's what 00:11:16.80\00:11:19.63 happened to Princess Di's driver. 00:11:19.63\00:11:21.66 No one recognized that he was drunk he was 00:11:21.66\00:11:23.83 walking straight lines, he was conversing 00:11:23.83\00:11:25.76 normally, but he attempted to negotiate a 00:11:25.76\00:11:29.33 turn in a tunnel at a speed that was impossible 00:11:29.56\00:11:32.60 to negotiate. That wreck has been analyzed 00:11:32.60\00:11:37.83 and its been found that the best race car driver 00:11:38.33\00:11:41.13 in the world would not have been able to 00:11:41.13\00:11:42.60 successfully negotiate that turn at that speed 00:11:42.60\00:11:46.53 and thus he lost his life and others lost their 00:11:47.16\00:11:49.33 life as well. Now, once alcohol is out of the 00:11:49.33\00:11:51.80 system the next day you are able to drive 00:11:51.80\00:11:55.46 again. Does driving involve critical abstract 00:11:55.46\00:11:59.60 difficult decision making? 00:11:59.60\00:12:01.73 No. if it did sixteen year olds would not be 00:12:03.43\00:12:06.16 allowed to drive in the world. The reason why 00:12:06.16\00:12:10.56 sixteen and eighteen and twenty year olds can 00:12:10.56\00:12:12.56 drive is because it's a fairly simplistic thing, 00:12:12.56\00:12:15.73 it doesn't require a lot of complex thinking and 00:12:15.73\00:12:19.60 analysis. But studies show once alcohol is 00:12:19.60\00:12:22.80 onboard it takes two weeks for critical 00:12:22.80\00:12:28.13 abstract thinking to comeback, one of the 00:12:28.13\00:12:31.86 reasons why it's best to totally abstain from 00:12:31.86\00:12:35.53 alcohol so the frontal lobe can be in tip top 00:12:35.53\00:12:39.40 shape. Another substance that affects the frontal 00:12:39.40\00:12:44.26 lobe of the brain in a more subtle area is 00:12:44.26\00:12:46.60 Nicotine, but its clear Nicotine has a 00:12:46.60\00:12:48.50 suppression effect on the frontal lobe of the 00:12:48.50\00:12:50.20 brain. Lead also is a toxin that effects IQ, 00:12:50.20\00:12:54.60 one of the reasons why you don't want to have 00:12:54.60\00:12:56.60 your kids play with toys that are laced with 00:12:56.60\00:12:58.73 lead. And the most commonly consumed drug 00:12:58.73\00:13:02.60 in Australia also has a role to play, 00:13:02.60\00:13:05.20 anyone want to guess what it is? 00:13:07.56\00:13:08.53 Caffeine. Caffeine actually affects the 00:13:09.00\00:13:12.23 adenosine receptors in the frontal lobe of the 00:13:12.43\00:13:15.03 brain. Blocks the adenosine receptors, 00:13:15.56\00:13:17.80 it also has too much of another chemical 00:13:18.30\00:13:20.73 acetylcholine available. Acetylcholine, actually 00:13:20.73\00:13:27.86 what it does is it destroys the enzyme 00:13:27.86\00:13:29.43 called acetylcholinesterase 00:13:29.43\00:13:31.03 which makes too much acetylcholine available 00:13:31.03\00:13:33.30 and this why people under the influence of 00:13:33.63\00:13:35.53 caffeine feel stimulated. 00:13:35.53\00:13:36.86 Pavlath studied this out. Typists actually can 00:13:38.83\00:13:41.06 type a little bit faster under the influence of 00:13:41.06\00:13:43.30 caffeine, but they make ten times as many 00:13:43.30\00:13:46.23 errors. And recently there was a study done on 00:13:46.23\00:13:50.93 caffeine and gossip. 00:13:50.93\00:13:53.40 Now the definition of gossip that was used in 00:13:56.33\00:13:58.46 this study was sharing private information 00:13:58.46\00:14:01.46 with someone who is not part of the problem 00:14:01.46\00:14:03.63 or part of the solution to the problem. 00:14:03.63\00:14:05.40 And studies show when you have caffeine 00:14:06.90\00:14:08.66 onboard you're significantly more likely 00:14:08.66\00:14:10.90 to do that when you don't, than when you 00:14:10.90\00:14:12.60 don't have caffeine onboard. And that simply 00:14:12.60\00:14:17.36 due to that loss of break in the frontal lobe of 00:14:17.36\00:14:20.53 the brain that comes from blocking those 00:14:20.53\00:14:23.90 adenosine receptors. Now this is even izn, 00:14:23.90\00:14:29.40 this information is caught up with the 00:14:29.40\00:14:31.36 National football league in America, 00:14:31.36\00:14:33.40 we just had the biggest, most watched sporting 00:14:34.26\00:14:36.96 event of the year, the Superbowl occured. 00:14:36.96\00:14:39.60 And interestingly those linemen and those 00:14:40.90\00:14:43.96 blockers, the one trying to protect the 00:14:44.36\00:14:47.26 the ones that are trying 00:14:47.26\00:14:48.23 to get to the quarterback are told to consume 00:14:49.60\00:14:53.26 caffeine. But there is one individual on that 00:14:53.90\00:14:57.66 field that is told to consume no caffeine 00:14:57.93\00:15:00.96 and guess who that is? It's actually the 00:15:02.66\00:15:06.53 quarterback. And the quarterback is the one 00:15:06.53\00:15:08.50 that has to get away from those people that 00:15:08.50\00:15:10.60 are juiced up with caffeine. So, why 00:15:10.60\00:15:12.56 shouldn't he have caffeine onboard? 00:15:12.56\00:15:14.53 There is a lot of information coming into 00:15:20.60\00:15:22.33 that quarterback in about three seconds and 00:15:22.33\00:15:24.56 he has to make a wise decision. 00:15:24.56\00:15:26.83 It requires an active frontal lobe of the brain 00:15:26.83\00:15:30.00 to make that wise decision. And studies 00:15:30.00\00:15:32.43 show when caffeine is onboard is more likely 00:15:32.43\00:15:34.73 to make the wrong decision. And so if it's 00:15:34.73\00:15:37.90 true in regards to NFL quarterbacks with the 00:15:37.90\00:15:40.90 decisions that were having to make moment 00:15:40.90\00:15:42.76 by moment, analyzing information and 00:15:42.76\00:15:45.90 making wise decisions, it would make sense 00:15:45.90\00:15:47.90 for us also to go caffeine free. Another 00:15:47.90\00:15:51.30 thing that has to do with IQ is breathing, 00:15:51.30\00:15:54.36 the study was done at Harvard University for 00:15:55.16\00:15:57.06 children, healthy lungs may mean healthier 00:15:57.06\00:15:59.23 scores on tests of memory learning and 00:15:59.23\00:16:01.13 intelligence. Researchers at Harvard 00:16:01.13\00:16:03.63 University examined data of 165 Boston 00:16:03.63\00:16:06.30 children who have been followed since birth. 00:16:06.30\00:16:08.06 At the age of six, the children had their lung 00:16:08.63\00:16:10.30 function tested. At age nine, they completed 00:16:10.30\00:16:12.66 standard tests of memory learning ability and 00:16:12.66\00:16:15.53 intelligence. And the researchers found that 00:16:15.53\00:16:17.76 for each increase in the children's 00:16:17.76\00:16:19.46 lung-function performance, there was a 00:16:19.46\00:16:21.06 corresponding increase in their cognitive-test 00:16:21.40\00:16:24.33 score. This previously was shown in adults to 00:16:24.76\00:16:29.46 be the case, young adults and now it's shown 00:16:29.46\00:16:32.13 to be case also in children and part of 00:16:32.13\00:16:35.73 this, that is emphasized is deep breathing. 00:16:35.73\00:16:39.46 In fact it was interesting when this 00:16:40.50\00:16:41.53 study came out I actually plugged in the 00:16:41.53\00:16:43.83 phrase deep breathing into Ellen White's 00:16:43.83\00:16:48.43 CD-ROM and I was going to show that to 00:16:48.93\00:16:52.43 you, I think it's actually a hidden slide, 00:16:52.43\00:16:54.40 I don't know if anyone up there might be able 00:16:54.40\00:16:56.13 to unhide the slide, but interestingly what she 00:16:56.13\00:17:00.26 stated was those that participate in exercises 00:17:00.26\00:17:06.36 for deep breathing will have an advantage and 00:17:06.36\00:17:09.03 she recommended that every educational 00:17:09.03\00:17:12.60 institution, actually institute in children the 00:17:12.60\00:17:17.10 exercise of deep breathing. Here it is, 00:17:17.10\00:17:19.16 the one who sits and stands erect is more 00:17:19.16\00:17:21.13 likely than others to breathe properly. 00:17:21.13\00:17:22.80 But the teacher should impress upon his pupils 00:17:23.50\00:17:25.53 the importance of deep breathing. Show how 00:17:25.53\00:17:27.30 the healthy action of the respiratory organs, 00:17:27.30\00:17:29.46 assisting the circulation of the blood 00:17:29.80\00:17:31.40 invigorates the whole system, excites the 00:17:31.40\00:17:33.60 appetite, promotes digestion, and induces 00:17:33.60\00:17:36.13 sound, sweet sleep, thus not only refreshing 00:17:36.13\00:17:38.70 the body but soothing and tranquilizing the 00:17:38.70\00:17:40.80 mind. And while the importance of deep 00:17:40.80\00:17:42.93 breathing is shown, the practice should be 00:17:42.93\00:17:44.73 what? Insisted upon. Let exercises be given 00:17:44.73\00:17:49.00 which will promote this, and see that the habit 00:17:49.00\00:17:51.06 becomes established. And so, this is why 00:17:51.06\00:17:53.50 even posture and even sitting in an 00:17:53.50\00:17:55.93 environment where you're in classes all day 00:17:55.93\00:17:58.06 or you are at AYC, it's important to take those 00:17:58.06\00:18:00.86 slow deep breathes, actually it will 00:18:01.60\00:18:03.80 oxygenate the brain better and you will have 00:18:04.03\00:18:07.36 better frontal lobe as well as better retention, 00:18:07.36\00:18:10.80 better temporal lobe function. 00:18:10.80\00:18:12.26 Now, there is one lifestyle habit that's 00:18:13.70\00:18:15.60 been shown to be the most critically 00:18:15.60\00:18:18.10 associated, at least at Brigham Young 00:18:18.10\00:18:19.93 University. Forty thousand student body in 00:18:19.93\00:18:23.06 regards to their GPA. This lifestyle factor is 00:18:23.06\00:18:27.76 very much related to melatonin. 00:18:29.00\00:18:31.13 And melatonin comes about as a result of 00:18:32.10\00:18:34.93 darkness and being in a dark environment as 00:18:34.93\00:18:38.23 you can see on the screen once darkness 00:18:38.23\00:18:40.00 hits, melatonin starts to spike. In peak it will 00:18:40.00\00:18:43.53 peak around 2 o'clock in the morning and 00:18:43.53\00:18:45.36 when the light comes in the room in the 00:18:45.36\00:18:47.20 morning it shuts down again. Melatonin is 00:18:47.20\00:18:50.43 very much related to your ability to retain 00:18:50.43\00:18:54.53 the information that you learned that day. 00:18:54.53\00:18:57.20 Now, if you go to bed two hours later than 9 00:18:59.66\00:19:03.70 o'clock of if you go to bed at midnight you 00:19:03.70\00:19:06.40 will decrease the area under that curve by 00:19:06.40\00:19:08.80 about 50 percent, so you will have less 00:19:08.80\00:19:11.83 melatonin output as a result of being a 00:19:11.83\00:19:14.86 late-nighter. And what Brigham Young 00:19:14.86\00:19:17.90 University found out is a lifestyle factor most 00:19:17.90\00:19:20.66 connected to GPA was early to bed, early to 00:19:20.66\00:19:24.73 rise. Interestingly Ellen White was also ahead 00:19:24.73\00:19:28.73 of her time on this, she said sleep is worth far 00:19:28.73\00:19:32.10 more before then after midnight. 00:19:32.10\00:19:34.33 Two hours good sleep before 12 o'clock is 00:19:35.76\00:19:37.63 worth more than four hours after 12 o'clock. 00:19:37.63\00:19:40.00 I've actually seen that statement after my 00:19:41.30\00:19:43.40 freshman year of college. I was in pre-med at 00:19:43.40\00:19:48.00 Andrew's University and I had taken just, 00:19:48.00\00:19:51.26 while I had taken General Chemistry and 00:19:51.50\00:19:53.06 Calculus, those were the two hard classes for 00:19:53.06\00:19:55.40 my freshman year. And my sophomore year, 00:19:55.40\00:19:58.60 I had lined up to take organic chemistry, 00:19:59.30\00:20:02.16 foundations of biology, physics for scientists 00:20:02.96\00:20:06.16 and engineers, which is a calculus based 00:20:06.16\00:20:08.20 physics and then quantitative analysis, 00:20:08.20\00:20:12.10 another advanced chemistry course. 00:20:12.46\00:20:14.36 So, I had classes all morning and then every 00:20:14.73\00:20:17.10 afternoon I had a lab associated with one of 00:20:17.10\00:20:19.63 those classes. So Monday was Physics lab, 00:20:19.63\00:20:21.76 Tuesday biology, etcetera. And my adviser 00:20:21.76\00:20:25.83 Dr. Wilkins said, Neil if you want to go 00:20:25.83\00:20:29.66 medical school I would recommend you not 00:20:29.66\00:20:31.60 do this. You need to get good grades and one 00:20:31.60\00:20:35.00 or two of these subjects is hard enough, 00:20:35.00\00:20:36.70 but all four of them. Well I said the problem 00:20:36.70\00:20:39.60 is Dr. Wilkins I have been looking at all the 00:20:39.60\00:20:41.50 subjects I want to take and I can't get them all 00:20:41.73\00:20:44.53 in unless I do this year like that. I said you 00:20:44.53\00:20:49.60 know, can I try it and then if I am not doing so 00:20:49.60\00:20:52.96 well maybe I can drop a class or two, so that I 00:20:52.96\00:20:55.93 am not adversely effected in regards to getting 00:20:55.93\00:20:58.33 into medical school. He says well you can try 00:20:58.33\00:21:01.10 it but I wouldn't recommend it. 00:21:01.10\00:21:02.86 Well, I was used to going to bed at 11:30 and I 00:21:02.86\00:21:05.86 changed my bed time, I actually after class I 00:21:05.86\00:21:10.50 remember I am having class all day long, 00:21:10.50\00:21:12.43 I work in the evening, I actually worked as a 00:21:12.43\00:21:14.50 tutor for the freshmen class and my class, 00:21:14.50\00:21:18.53 my work got out at 9 pm and so the only study 00:21:18.90\00:21:23.23 time I had was in the morning before class, 00:21:23.23\00:21:25.80 so I was used to going to bed at 11:30, 00:21:25.80\00:21:27.70 now I want to bed at 9 o'clock. I got up at 4 00:21:27.90\00:21:30.70 am. The first thing I did was to read spiritual 00:21:30.70\00:21:34.50 material and spend some time with the Lord 00:21:34.50\00:21:37.36 and then I would spend just a few minutes, 00:21:37.36\00:21:41.66 it was never more than 60 or 90 minutes 00:21:42.00\00:21:44.96 studying all of those subjects and then I would 00:21:44.96\00:21:47.76 go out for a three mile run around the track, 00:21:47.76\00:21:51.73 I would make it to breakfast and then I 00:21:51.73\00:21:54.26 would make it to my 07:30 class as the bell 00:21:54.26\00:21:56.86 was ringing. And that was my study 00:21:56.86\00:21:59.46 time and at the end of that semester my GPA 00:21:59.46\00:22:03.90 was 4.0, far higher then it was my freshman 00:22:03.90\00:22:07.20 year with easier classes. And so indeed 00:22:07.20\00:22:10.53 melatonin is critically important I can tell you 00:22:10.53\00:22:12.63 from personal experience early to bed, early to 00:22:12.63\00:22:15.23 rise makes a person, you have this saying in 00:22:15.23\00:22:19.50 Australia. Healthy, wealthy and wise. 00:22:19.50\00:22:24.66 And actually there is study showing that in our 00:22:25.43\00:22:27.13 business community where the top business 00:22:27.13\00:22:29.76 leaders come and meet or when they meet is 00:22:29.76\00:22:32.56 always early in the morning, they're early to 00:22:32.56\00:22:34.83 bed, early to risers, they'll love to meet at 00:22:34.83\00:22:37.23 6 O'clock in the morning to plan how the town 00:22:37.23\00:22:40.30 is going to run. There is no one else there, 00:22:40.30\00:22:44.00 its quiet, they can have that thinking time 00:22:44.00\00:22:46.16 there and virtually the only one that have the 00:22:46.16\00:22:49.00 money who are not doing that is the 00:22:50.13\00:22:52.53 entertainment industry. The entertainment 00:22:52.53\00:22:54.20 industry is linked with major depression and 00:22:54.20\00:22:57.80 the more depressed you are, the more you feel 00:22:57.80\00:23:00.50 better as you are sleep deprived. That's one of 00:23:00.50\00:23:03.13 the reason why the late-nighters tend to be 00:23:03.13\00:23:06.83 associated there with the entertainment 00:23:06.83\00:23:09.20 industry. And fortunately they can also get out 00:23:09.20\00:23:11.26 of program, they come to us and within seven 00:23:11.26\00:23:13.70 days they're early to bed, early risers. 00:23:13.70\00:23:15.16 We can face shift them with light therapy and 00:23:15.80\00:23:18.36 with proper sleep. Diet also has a role 00:23:18.36\00:23:20.86 to play in regards to IQ, high carb low fat diet 00:23:20.86\00:23:25.03 will improve weight loss, enhance moods, 00:23:25.03\00:23:27.10 speed, thinking and while both the high and 00:23:27.10\00:23:29.13 low carb diet seem to boost the speed of 00:23:29.13\00:23:31.13 cognitive processing, the interesting result 00:23:31.13\00:23:33.73 that compared to the high carb diet, 00:23:33.73\00:23:35.36 subjects consuming the low-carb diet had a 00:23:35.36\00:23:37.43 smaller improvement. So just being on a more 00:23:37.43\00:23:40.86 lean portion of food can be helpful but its 00:23:40.86\00:23:44.83 much better to be on the high carb, 00:23:44.83\00:23:46.60 low-fat diet and that's what the frontal lobe 00:23:46.60\00:23:49.70 desires for optimal function is a diet higher 00:23:49.70\00:23:52.70 in carbohydrates. What foods have 00:23:52.70\00:23:54.80 carbohydrates in them? 00:23:54.80\00:23:56.03 Carbohydrates are used almost exclusively by 00:24:01.16\00:24:03.56 the brain for optimal function, 00:24:03.56\00:24:04.90 but carbohydrates are present in fruits, 00:24:05.36\00:24:07.66 vegetables, nuts and grains. Interestingly the 00:24:08.20\00:24:11.46 original diet in Genesis chapter 1, Ellen White 00:24:11.46\00:24:15.16 quotes those four fruit groups and says 00:24:15.16\00:24:17.00 "They impart a strength, the power of endurance, 00:24:17.00\00:24:19.30 and a vigor of intellect that are not afforded by 00:24:19.30\00:24:21.83 a more complex and stimulating diet." 00:24:21.83\00:24:24.76 And so there is an advantage to a diet that 00:24:25.76\00:24:29.50 is plant based. In fact in another place she 00:24:29.50\00:24:36.03 talks about the adverse effect of food high in 00:24:36.03\00:24:39.16 protein and high in fat virtually no 00:24:39.16\00:24:40.86 carbohydrate, which is primarily your meat 00:24:40.86\00:24:42.93 food. Meat is a carbohydrate deficient 00:24:42.93\00:24:45.10 food, one of the reasons why it doesn't come 00:24:45.10\00:24:47.40 out on top as far as the best for brain function. 00:24:47.40\00:24:50.56 Sugar is a carbohydrate, I remember in the 3rd 00:24:51.63\00:24:54.46 grade after the researchers found out 00:24:54.46\00:24:56.46 that carbs are good for the frontal lobe, 00:24:56.46\00:24:58.23 I was handed a candy bar and I said, 00:24:58.23\00:24:59.86 the person who handed it to me said here have 00:25:00.43\00:25:02.16 some brain food and I said really? 00:25:02.16\00:25:04.83 And he said yeah, carbs are good for the brain. 00:25:04.83\00:25:06.70 This candy bar is loaded with it. Should be 00:25:06.70\00:25:08.56 great for your brain. Well, I wondered about 00:25:08.56\00:25:11.13 that, but I didn't just a few years later it was 00:25:11.13\00:25:15.00 studied in Iowa and then in other places, 00:25:15.00\00:25:17.00 actually high sugar diet impairs frontal lobe 00:25:17.00\00:25:20.60 function in school age children significantly. 00:25:20.60\00:25:22.96 In fact it makes over a great later difference 00:25:23.73\00:25:25.80 performance in studies particularly if they 00:25:25.80\00:25:29.00 involve having to think. Now if it's just 00:25:29.00\00:25:31.33 memory you can do alright in most cases but 00:25:31.33\00:25:35.00 if you're having to think about the problem 00:25:35.00\00:25:37.06 and come up with a solution to it, it makes 00:25:37.86\00:25:39.93 powerful difference, one of the reasons why is 00:25:39.93\00:25:42.03 when we eat a candy bar our pancreas thinks 00:25:42.03\00:25:44.70 we have had a large amount of fruits, 00:25:44.70\00:25:46.36 grains, nuts and vegetables, 'cause our 00:25:46.36\00:25:48.00 blood sugar spikes. Then it cranks out a high 00:25:48.00\00:25:50.70 amount of insulin within 20 minutes we're in 00:25:50.70\00:25:53.33 the mildly hyperglycemic phase and it takes 00:25:53.33\00:25:56.70 four hours for the frontal lobe to fully 00:25:56.70\00:25:59.20 recuperate from that. And so at first the 00:25:59.20\00:26:02.43 person feels a little bit hungry, they snack 00:26:02.43\00:26:04.66 again but they're still under that four hour 00:26:04.66\00:26:06.66 recovery time and they're taking their test 00:26:06.66\00:26:09.40 during that time it does make a difference in 00:26:09.40\00:26:12.66 adverse of performance. Arachidonic acid also 00:26:12.66\00:26:16.33 decreases the synthesis and storage of 00:26:16.33\00:26:18.76 acetylcholine, an important neuro 00:26:18.76\00:26:20.73 transmitter in the frontal lobe of the brain 00:26:20.73\00:26:22.43 and its primarily present in flesh foods and 00:26:22.43\00:26:25.06 one of the reasons why Pavlath showed that 00:26:25.06\00:26:28.10 meat and intelligence are not related. 00:26:28.66\00:26:31.56 Ellen White says this, eating much flesh will 00:26:32.10\00:26:33.86 diminish intellectual activity. Students would 00:26:33.86\00:26:36.23 accomplish much more in their studies if they 00:26:36.23\00:26:38.40 did what, never tasted meat. When the animal 00:26:38.40\00:26:41.83 part of the human nature is strengthened by 00:26:41.83\00:26:43.53 meat-eating, the intellectual power 00:26:43.53\00:26:45.46 diminishes proportionately. 00:26:45.46\00:26:47.03 Now interestingly there was a study done in 00:26:47.63\00:26:49.30 Great Britain not long ago. On the opposite 00:26:49.30\00:26:52.90 effect, in other words IQ and its relationship 00:26:52.90\00:26:57.63 to vegetarianism. What this study showed in 00:26:57.63\00:27:02.36 Great Britain was that children with high IQs 00:27:02.36\00:27:05.23 are more likely to become vegetarians when 00:27:05.23\00:27:08.16 they grow up. Study of more than 8,000 men 00:27:08.16\00:27:11.30 and women aged 30, whose IQs had been 00:27:11.30\00:27:13.63 measured when they were 10, showed that the 00:27:13.63\00:27:15.50 higher the IQ, the greater the odds of 00:27:15.50\00:27:18.30 becoming a vegetarian. For each 15-point 00:27:18.30\00:27:21.60 increase in IQ in the study, the likelihood of 00:27:21.60\00:27:23.96 being a vegetarian rose by 38 percent. 00:27:23.96\00:27:27.16 Even after adjustment to factors such as social 00:27:27.80\00:27:30.00 class and education the link was still 00:27:30.00\00:27:32.06 consistent. And so if you don't have much 00:27:32.06\00:27:34.60 time when someone ask you why your a 00:27:34.60\00:27:36.56 vegetarian you can give them the simple two 00:27:36.56\00:27:38.70 word answer. High IQ. 00:27:38.70\00:27:41.30 Now, it's not just a plant-based diet that can 00:27:44.20\00:27:46.93 be helpful or just a vegetarian diet, 00:27:46.93\00:27:49.60 some vegetarian diets can be unhealthy. 00:27:49.60\00:27:51.80 You know, even eating or drinking soft drinks 00:27:51.80\00:27:54.63 is part of a vegetarian diet, but it's not the 00:27:54.63\00:27:57.56 healthiest and also it depends on what else 00:27:57.56\00:28:01.53 we are getting with that vegetarian diet. 00:28:01.90\00:28:04.43 This was a study done by Bruce Taylor in 00:28:04.43\00:28:07.33 New York. Bruce Taylor was a Pathologist. 00:28:07.33\00:28:09.33 There were medical students in his medical 00:28:10.13\00:28:12.10 school that wanted to publish some research, 00:28:12.10\00:28:14.66 so they could graduate from medical school 00:28:14.66\00:28:16.70 and so they decided to feed rabbits and 00:28:17.23\00:28:18.80 monkeys 100 percent cholesterol and see what 00:28:18.80\00:28:24.43 would happen to their arteries, but they 00:28:24.43\00:28:27.96 needed the cholesterol. So, they came to him 00:28:27.96\00:28:30.16 together and he says well its been over there 00:28:30.16\00:28:32.50 in the corner, its been there for a while, 00:28:32.50\00:28:33.93 but its nothing but pure cholesterol, 00:28:33.93\00:28:35.46 if you want to feed pure cholesterol to them 00:28:35.46\00:28:37.10 go ahead. So, they did and within a few short 00:28:37.10\00:28:42.20 weeks all of them had a decrease in activity of 00:28:42.20\00:28:46.63 their brain and they began to actually have 00:28:46.63\00:28:49.06 strokes. Small strokes and some of them major 00:28:49.06\00:28:52.53 strokes and major heart attacks. And they 00:28:52.53\00:28:56.20 came back to Dr. Taylor and said is there 00:28:56.20\00:28:59.80 anything else in there besides cholesterol? 00:28:59.80\00:29:01.66 He said no, pure cholesterol. 00:29:01.66\00:29:03.13 They mentioned the results. He said 00:29:05.16\00:29:06.50 cholesterol is bad, but it shouldn't have been 00:29:06.50\00:29:08.23 that bad, in that quick a time and then he 00:29:08.23\00:29:11.73 began to think and he recognized the 00:29:11.73\00:29:13.96 cholesterol he had given them had been in a 00:29:13.96\00:29:15.80 bucket that has been exposed to the air it had 00:29:15.80\00:29:18.90 become discolored and then he decided to do 00:29:18.90\00:29:22.46 something else. Let's feed pure cholesterol to 00:29:22.46\00:29:25.10 rabbits and monkeys that have never been 00:29:25.10\00:29:27.10 exposed to the air. 00:29:27.10\00:29:28.10 And so instead of being discolored it was a 00:29:30.10\00:29:32.33 clearer substance, clear white and he found 00:29:32.33\00:29:36.73 out none of them developed any 00:29:36.73\00:29:38.20 atherosclerosis with that. Then he decided to 00:29:38.20\00:29:41.96 do something else. He fed food to the 00:29:41.96\00:29:44.10 monkeys and within 24 hours he would count 00:29:44.10\00:29:47.16 the dead cells in there in order from the 00:29:47.16\00:29:49.40 oxidized cholesterol, the oxidized cholesterol 00:29:49.40\00:29:52.43 that's the most damaging. Anyone want to guess 00:29:52.43\00:29:55.50 what the most harmful food was to monkey 00:29:55.50\00:30:00.00 blood vessels in Dr. Taylor's study? 00:30:00.00\00:30:04.76 Number one, custards, now what are custards? 00:30:07.60\00:30:11.50 What are custards made out of? 00:30:13.90\00:30:15.03 Milk, sugar and eggs. When you mix up 00:30:16.63\00:30:19.73 cholesterol in a sugar environment and eggs 00:30:19.73\00:30:23.50 are particularly loaded, you're going to oxidize 00:30:23.50\00:30:27.36 that cholesterol and cause significant damage, 00:30:27.36\00:30:30.66 doesn't take long within 24 hours. What's the 00:30:30.66\00:30:32.80 most commonly consumed custard in 00:30:32.80\00:30:34.60 America? Or in Australia, I think it's the most 00:30:34.60\00:30:38.46 commonly consumed one here as well. 00:30:38.46\00:30:40.06 It's actually good old fashioned ice cream and 00:30:41.46\00:30:44.86 it's one of the reasons why it's good that they 00:30:44.86\00:30:47.40 are ice creams cropping up that have no 00:30:47.40\00:30:49.30 cholesterol. You know there is the banana ice 00:30:49.30\00:30:51.86 cream that you can put through the frozen 00:30:51.86\00:30:53.73 bananas in champion juicer, there is Tofutti 00:30:53.73\00:30:56.20 and last year I came across a food 00:30:57.50\00:31:01.36 manufacturer, actually he read our book, 00:31:01.36\00:31:03.50 Prove Positive, totally changed his life, 00:31:03.50\00:31:05.80 he was having a lot of health problems. 00:31:05.80\00:31:07.23 He was a multi millionaire rancher up in 00:31:08.00\00:31:09.86 Montana and I was speaking in his area, 00:31:09.86\00:31:12.63 didn't even know he existed but he found out 00:31:12.63\00:31:14.90 I was there he came there and wanted me to 00:31:14.90\00:31:16.50 take him, take me to his house. 00:31:16.50\00:31:18.83 I ended up spending the night with him, 00:31:19.30\00:31:20.63 with him and his family, a great guy, 00:31:21.40\00:31:23.06 but his ice cream was the best that I had ever 00:31:23.80\00:31:28.20 had. And he has 32 flavors, one more than 00:31:28.20\00:31:32.90 Baskin Robins and its not Soy based, its 00:31:32.90\00:31:36.13 oatmeal based. And his problem after I ate it 00:31:36.13\00:31:39.93 and my boys were there too and they were 00:31:39.93\00:31:42.76 raving about it, everyone raves about his 00:31:43.60\00:31:45.53 cream. He told me about his problem of 00:31:45.53\00:31:48.63 naming the ice cream. You can't call it ice 00:31:48.63\00:31:52.93 cream that doesn't have dairy in it in America. 00:31:52.93\00:31:55.43 And of course this was better than ice, 00:31:56.60\00:31:58.46 then any ice cream that any of us have eaten, 00:31:58.46\00:32:01.70 including the dairy ice cream and but a week 00:32:01.70\00:32:05.43 later he called me up and he said I found out 00:32:05.43\00:32:07.70 the name, I woke up with it in the middle of 00:32:07.70\00:32:09.86 the night. He is going to call it; we can't say 00:32:09.86\00:32:12.56 its ice cream. 00:32:12.56\00:32:13.53 And he's also come out with something to 00:32:15.80\00:32:18.00 compete against number 2, and 3 as well. 00:32:18.00\00:32:20.70 Number 2, the most damaging was pancake 00:32:20.70\00:32:24.63 mix, pancake mix is primarily powdered egg, 00:32:24.63\00:32:27.06 its cholesterol or oxidized cholesterol from 00:32:27.06\00:32:30.26 the powdered eggs and it was tied with three, 00:32:30.26\00:32:32.33 Parmesan cheese, the powdered cheese and 00:32:32.33\00:32:35.20 that's not a misprint. Lard was number three 00:32:35.20\00:32:37.93 as well. They're both tied for number 3 as 00:32:37.93\00:32:40.50 being the worst as far as harmful within 24 00:32:40.50\00:32:45.63 hours to the aorta and what they can do to the 00:32:45.63\00:32:49.06 brain blood cells. Now I am going to ask our 00:32:49.06\00:32:51.20 team also to go ahead and unhide the next 00:32:51.20\00:32:54.03 slide that I had in this presentation. 00:32:54.03\00:32:56.36 Because its interesting again far ahead of our 00:32:57.46\00:33:01.20 time was Ellen White on this subject before 00:33:01.20\00:33:05.46 Bruce Taylor came up with it there were some 00:33:05.46\00:33:07.26 questions in regard to that, but she said 00:33:07.26\00:33:11.56 especially harmful are the, what? 00:33:11.56\00:33:15.33 Especially harmful are the custards and 00:33:17.70\00:33:21.20 puddings in which milk, eggs, and sugar are 00:33:21.20\00:33:24.30 the chief ingredients. The free use of milk and 00:33:24.30\00:33:26.86 sugar together should be what? 00:33:26.86\00:33:28.50 Avoided. Far ahead of our time. 00:33:29.80\00:33:32.23 Physical exercise, also critically important in 00:33:32.23\00:33:35.26 regards to IQ and it's their aerobic physical 00:33:35.26\00:33:39.43 exercise that seems to be the most beneficial 00:33:39.43\00:33:42.13 but there is another type of exercise that's 00:33:42.13\00:33:44.26 helpful as well. This study showed working 00:33:44.26\00:33:46.96 with one's own hands in a real world 3D 00:33:46.96\00:33:50.50 environment is imperative for full cognitive 00:33:50.50\00:33:53.30 and intellectual development, Dr. Eric 00:33:53.30\00:33:56.33 Sigmund says, with woodwork, metal work, 00:33:56.33\00:33:59.16 craft, music or car mechanic classes dropped 00:33:59.16\00:34:01.70 by many schools and children wanting to play 00:34:01.70\00:34:03.76 computer games at home, the western world is 00:34:03.76\00:34:06.43 becoming a software instead of a screwdriver 00:34:06.43\00:34:09.73 society. And there are problems with that he 00:34:09.73\00:34:13.30 mentions. Research is showing that increasing 00:34:13.30\00:34:15.53 time spent in the virtual world of computers is 00:34:15.53\00:34:17.76 displacing hands-on play and hands-on 00:34:17.76\00:34:20.30 learning. 3D learning allows young people to 00:34:20.30\00:34:23.16 experience how the world works in practice, 00:34:23.16\00:34:25.23 to gain an understanding of materials and 00:34:25.23\00:34:27.20 processes and to make informed judgments 00:34:27.20\00:34:30.20 about abstract concepts. 00:34:30.20\00:34:32.16 And so working with your hands in a 3D 00:34:33.70\00:34:36.33 world environment actually improves 00:34:36.33\00:34:39.10 cognitive function improves IQ. He did 00:34:39.10\00:34:41.66 studies in regards to even engineering 00:34:41.66\00:34:43.40 students. She says there is no excuse for 00:35:07.30\00:35:10.40 slow bungling at work of any character. 00:35:10.40\00:35:12.70 When one is always at work and the work is 00:35:12.70\00:35:14.66 never done it is because mind and heart are not 00:35:14.66\00:35:16.90 put into the labor. Whether it's garden work 00:36:08.53\00:36:11.80 or other type of physical labor work and you 00:36:11.80\00:36:14.00 know who we have the hardest time with in 00:36:14.00\00:36:16.10 regards to getting that labor done, 00:36:16.10\00:36:18.83 not within the students, it's actually within the 00:36:20.43\00:36:23.26 faculty, lot of our faculty are not used to 00:36:23.26\00:36:27.30 sort of thing and they tell me you know there 00:36:27.30\00:36:29.10 is intense classes I am having to teach, 00:36:29.10\00:36:31.00 I'm having to prepare, don't have the time for 00:36:31.00\00:36:33.30 it but then when we tell them this is a must 00:36:33.50\00:36:36.26 as far as Weimar they go out and do it and 00:36:36.26\00:36:38.03 they come back with smiles on their faces and 00:36:38.03\00:36:40.53 they feel refreshed and they talk about how 00:36:40.53\00:36:42.80 much more efficient they are in preparing for 00:36:42.80\00:36:45.33 their classes, something critical about regular 00:36:45.33\00:36:49.83 physical labor. While hypnosis will also 00:36:49.83\00:36:52.63 counteract IQ. In fact this comes from a 00:36:52.63\00:36:55.86 hypnosis text book, hypnosis attempts to 00:36:55.86\00:36:58.06 cancel out frontal lobe functions and bring 00:36:58.06\00:37:00.16 people into a trance in which they're highly 00:37:00.16\00:37:02.40 suggestible. This is most easily accomplished 00:37:02.40\00:37:05.33 by training the eyes to focus in on one object, 00:37:05.33\00:37:07.70 the best object being a little flickering light. 00:37:07.70\00:37:10.96 The person will record information and duties 00:37:12.33\00:37:14.23 without interpretation, or without frontal lobe 00:37:14.23\00:37:16.46 activity. Now, lot of people may not realize it 00:37:16.46\00:37:20.03 but they could have a hypnotic instrument in 00:37:20.03\00:37:22.23 their own home, what trains the eyes to focus 00:37:22.23\00:37:25.70 in one object and flicker. 00:37:25.70\00:37:27.50 Yes, and what produces that flicker is the 00:37:30.13\00:37:33.03 rapid scene of reference change. 00:37:33.03\00:37:34.90 Now you maybe watching this on 00:37:35.23\00:37:36.73 television on Three Angels Broadcasting 00:37:36.73\00:37:39.40 Network and if you are rest assured it's not 00:37:39.40\00:37:42.66 going to suppress your frontal lobe, you know 00:37:42.66\00:37:44.40 why it won't? The average scene is not 00:37:44.40\00:37:47.26 changing every three seconds like it does in 00:37:47.26\00:37:49.33 movies and entertainment television. 00:37:49.33\00:37:51.06 We sit people down in front of their favorite 00:37:51.56\00:37:53.26 TV program and within 90 seconds to utmost 00:37:53.26\00:37:56.60 three minutes they're no longer in beta wave 00:37:56.60\00:37:58.40 activity, they are in alpha wave rhythm, 00:37:58.40\00:38:00.23 which is a hypnotic rhythm. Their memory is 00:38:00.23\00:38:03.10 still working, their emotions are working, 00:38:03.10\00:38:04.86 they can laugh and cry with the scene, 00:38:04.86\00:38:06.40 but there are no longer putting it in the 00:38:06.40\00:38:08.36 appropriate sub sense. And this is why they 00:38:08.36\00:38:11.00 can laugh at hideous things that if they 00:38:11.00\00:38:12.80 occurred in real life they would be uphauling, 00:38:12.80\00:38:14.83 because of the hypnotic stage that they are in. 00:38:15.50\00:38:17.83 There are 17 detrimental effects on the frontal 00:38:18.36\00:38:21.30 lobe of the brain that entertainment television 00:38:21.30\00:38:23.30 has been proven to do, over 3000 studies have 00:38:25.83\00:38:26.83 been done on it; over 300 books have been 00:38:26.83\00:38:28.03 written on the subject and they all show a 00:38:28.03\00:38:30.90 decline in frontal lobe function. It decreases 00:38:30.90\00:38:34.90 interest in learning. It decreases interest in 00:38:34.90\00:38:37.30 reading. Decrease in IQ scores. Decrease in 00:38:37.30\00:38:40.60 academic performance. Decrease in 00:38:40.60\00:38:42.30 discernment. Increase in day dreaming and a 00:38:42.30\00:38:45.10 decrease in creative ingenuity. 00:38:45.10\00:38:46.83 In fact one of our professors at one of our 00:38:47.30\00:38:49.66 colleges, Columbia Union College, 00:38:49.66\00:38:53.33 who taught communications for years, 00:38:54.16\00:38:55.93 people would come because they wanted to be 00:38:55.93\00:38:57.43 experts in the media and sometimes they 00:38:57.43\00:39:00.23 would fail his communications class and 00:39:00.23\00:39:02.16 they would say this is what I want to do for 00:39:02.16\00:39:04.20 my life. I am failing and he would tell them 00:39:04.20\00:39:07.53 one piece of information that would help them. 00:39:07.53\00:39:10.00 He would tell them to go home and stop 00:39:10.50\00:39:12.10 watching television and movies, and in one 00:39:12.10\00:39:15.23 year come back and take his class, students 00:39:15.23\00:39:18.26 would do that and they would come back and 00:39:18.26\00:39:20.26 get an A. Interestingly the top Hollywood 00:39:20.26\00:39:24.63 producers, who design the sets in the movies 00:39:24.63\00:39:30.16 and everything about it, themselves don't 00:39:30.16\00:39:33.20 watch entertainment television because they 00:39:33.20\00:39:36.83 know it's gonna suppress their creativity. 00:39:36.83\00:39:38.90 And they'll tell you about this. They will 00:39:38.90\00:39:42.26 tell you about it in interviews etcetera. 00:39:42.26\00:39:44.13 They might watch what someone else has 00:39:44.13\00:39:45.70 done for 90 seconds to utmost three minutes 00:39:45.70\00:39:47.20 but they're not going to watch a full length 00:39:47.20\00:39:49.30 movie because of what it's going to do in 00:39:49.30\00:39:52.26 suppressing the frontal lobe of their brain in 00:39:52.26\00:39:54.90 regards to creativity. 00:39:54.90\00:39:56.23 This study done not long ago and published at 00:39:57.40\00:40:00.16 Columbia University and published in the 00:40:00.16\00:40:02.90 Journal pediatrics, the more TV adolescents 00:40:02.90\00:40:05.06 watch the more likely they are to develop 00:40:05.06\00:40:06.90 attention and learning problems, and do poorly 00:40:06.90\00:40:08.66 in school in the long-run. The amount 00:40:08.66\00:40:10.36 of TV kids watch when they were 14 was 00:40:10.36\00:40:12.53 positively linked with having attention 00:40:12.53\00:40:14.56 problems later, not doing homework, 00:40:14.56\00:40:16.43 being bored at school, not finishing 00:40:16.43\00:40:18.26 high school and hating school the researchers 00:40:18.26\00:40:20.20 found. 14 year olds who added 1 more daily 00:40:20.20\00:40:23.36 hour of TV doubled their risk of academic 00:40:23.36\00:40:26.16 failure at age 16. And unfortunately it's not 00:40:26.16\00:40:29.53 just a problem of teenagers, that can be 00:40:29.53\00:40:31.16 problem of college students as well. 00:40:31.16\00:40:33.10 And what we are finding out, entertainment 00:40:33.60\00:40:36.30 television does suppress the frontal lobe of the 00:40:36.30\00:40:38.56 brain you can see on pet scans etcetera, 00:40:38.56\00:40:40.73 and this is the area where spirituality, 00:40:41.50\00:40:44.10 morality and the Will are centered, this is the 00:40:44.10\00:40:46.03 area where the Lord can communicate with us 00:40:46.03\00:40:48.03 through the Holy Spirit. But interestingly what 00:40:48.03\00:40:50.96 we're also finding out is what suppresses the 00:40:50.96\00:40:53.73 frontal lobe seems to also effect physical 00:40:53.73\00:40:56.96 health and longevity. For instance when the 00:40:56.96\00:40:59.33 frontal lobe is suppressed far greater 00:40:59.33\00:41:01.30 you're gonna have an anxiety disorder or 00:41:01.30\00:41:03.30 depression come about as a result. This study 00:41:03.30\00:41:06.23 was done in Australia and published just one 00:41:06.23\00:41:08.30 month ago from a study in Victoria, 00:41:08.30\00:41:11.73 compared with adults who watch less then two 00:41:11.73\00:41:14.93 hours of TV that day, those who watch more 00:41:14.93\00:41:17.40 then four hours had a 46 percent higher risk of 00:41:17.40\00:41:19.96 death from all causes and an 80 percent higher 00:41:19.96\00:41:23.36 risk of cardiovascular death during the six 00:41:23.36\00:41:25.33 year study period. Each hour is spend in the 00:41:25.33\00:41:27.80 front of the TV per day raised a person's risk 00:41:27.80\00:41:30.70 of death from cardiovascular disease by 00:41:30.70\00:41:32.93 18 percent and the risk of cancer by nine 00:41:32.93\00:41:35.80 percent. In fact the study's authors were 00:41:35.80\00:41:38.40 stymied, at first they thought it was the 00:41:38.40\00:41:40.10 sitting but then they realized it wasn't just 00:41:40.10\00:41:42.20 the sitting, the pattern held even after the 00:41:42.20\00:41:44.33 researchers took into account the education 00:41:44.33\00:41:46.43 level, the overall health of the participants, 00:41:46.43\00:41:48.50 their age, whether they smoked, 00:41:48.50\00:41:50.26 their cholesterol and blood pressure. 00:41:50.26\00:41:51.80 What's more, exercise doesn't necessary make 00:41:52.10\00:41:54.66 up for the long seasons in front of the tube. 00:41:54.66\00:41:57.03 Dunstan and his colleagues figured into 00:41:57.90\00:42:00.06 their analysis how much study participants 00:42:00.06\00:42:02.50 exercise when they compared groups of adults 00:42:02.50\00:42:05.06 who exercise the same amount but watch 00:42:05.06\00:42:07.10 varying amounts of TV, those who watch 00:42:07.10\00:42:09.56 more TV were still at a higher risk of dying, 00:42:09.56\00:42:12.43 during the six year study. Reading or doing 00:42:12.43\00:42:15.46 homework doesn't seem to be associated with 00:42:15.46\00:42:17.53 risk factors in regards to death. So, it's not 00:42:17.53\00:42:20.93 just sitting 'cause reading homework and 00:42:20.93\00:42:23.46 sitting in a class is not associated with it and 00:42:23.90\00:42:28.23 thus, notice that last quote, we are not sure if 00:42:28.23\00:42:31.80 it's the sedentary behavior itself or 00:42:31.80\00:42:34.40 something inherent about or associated with 00:42:34.40\00:42:38.20 TV viewing. And I think that it's clear by 00:42:38.20\00:42:40.96 other studies is that association is what 00:42:40.96\00:42:43.16 suppresses frontal lobe function is bad for the 00:42:43.16\00:42:45.93 health, it can even increase the risk of 00:42:45.93\00:42:48.46 and heart disease. Music also has a role to 00:42:48.46\00:42:51.83 play in regards to IQ. I can go through a 00:42:51.83\00:42:55.33 number of studies showing that even this 11 00:42:55.33\00:42:58.06 year old burning to play the cello at an 00:42:58.06\00:43:00.13 age increased his IQ as a result of that. 00:43:00.13\00:43:04.33 And having your children learn an 00:43:05.73\00:43:08.96 instrument is important. Music enters the brain 00:43:08.96\00:43:11.10 through its emotional regions, which include 00:43:11.10\00:43:12.80 the temporal lobe and limbic system. 00:43:12.80\00:43:14.23 From there, some kind of music tend to 00:43:14.86\00:43:16.53 produce a frontal lobe response that influences 00:43:16.53\00:43:18.96 the Will, moral worth, and reasoning power. 00:43:18.96\00:43:21.40 The type of music that shown to be most 00:43:21.40\00:43:23.70 beneficial is the traditional classical 00:43:23.70\00:43:26.43 music, this was a picture that I took 00:43:26.43\00:43:28.76 myself at the Dallas symphony during the 00:43:28.76\00:43:31.66 Christmas concert not long ago. Beautiful 00:43:31.66\00:43:34.30 music, it sold out 12 nights in a row, 00:43:34.30\00:43:37.70 they don't have to advertise it and there is 00:43:37.70\00:43:41.33 upsurge of classical music occurring around 00:43:41.33\00:43:45.66 the globe simply because, part of the reason is 00:43:45.66\00:43:48.70 the study showing the benefit as far as 00:43:48.70\00:43:50.93 organizing the brain is concerned and in 00:43:50.93\00:43:53.53 regards to IQ. In fact an interesting, 00:43:53.53\00:43:56.80 interestingly other kinds of music will evoke 00:43:56.80\00:44:00.13 very little if any frontal lobe response but will 00:44:00.13\00:44:02.36 produce a large emotional response with very 00:44:02.36\00:44:04.80 little logical or moral interpretation and that's 00:44:04.80\00:44:07.80 characterized by the syncopated rock and roll 00:44:07.80\00:44:10.00 rhythms they are prevalent in our day. 00:44:10.00\00:44:12.20 Showing that upbeat music is not necessarily 00:44:12.20\00:44:15.10 uplifting music. In fact last week I was 00:44:15.10\00:44:18.43 speaking in Melbourne and the person who 00:44:18.43\00:44:20.26 took me to the, picked me up from the airport 00:44:20.26\00:44:22.63 is getting his PhD in sports psychology at the 00:44:23.36\00:44:27.20 university down there. He is into sports 00:44:27.20\00:44:29.70 himself but he is every interested in what can 00:44:29.70\00:44:32.10 enhance the sports performance and so he has 00:44:32.10\00:44:35.83 gone along with his professors some study on 00:44:35.83\00:44:38.16 music and sports performance and the first 00:44:38.16\00:44:41.76 study he did was on accuracy of shooting a 00:44:41.76\00:44:45.16 pistol and music associated with it, 00:44:45.16\00:44:48.10 the first music they used was the type of 00:44:48.10\00:44:50.16 music that you would normally see on TV 00:44:50.16\00:44:52.56 when people are shooting pistol. 00:44:52.56\00:44:54.66 For sport what type of music that would be? 00:44:56.20\00:44:58.40 It's the syncopated rock and roll rhythms that 00:44:59.66\00:45:02.00 are there and they would play that to them 00:45:02.00\00:45:04.20 and they found out it decreased their accuracy 00:45:04.20\00:45:06.56 significantly. They were tended to be all over 00:45:06.56\00:45:09.60 the place when that music was played during 00:45:09.60\00:45:11.76 or before, then they played them more 00:45:11.76\00:45:15.03 peaceful, classical music or even more 00:45:15.03\00:45:18.20 energetic classical music and they find out 00:45:18.20\00:45:20.83 it increased their accuracy significantly, 00:45:20.83\00:45:25.46 multiple fold as a result of music. 00:45:26.00\00:45:28.56 And so music can organize the brain, 00:45:28.80\00:45:30.66 the baroque music by Boch, Handel seems to 00:45:30.66\00:45:33.36 be very beneficial, there are other 00:45:33.36\00:45:35.20 composers like Giuseppe and even more 00:45:35.20\00:45:37.70 modern composers that write in the 00:45:37.70\00:45:39.66 classical realm that are helpful. 00:45:39.66\00:45:41.90 Fortunately most of our hymns are actually 00:45:42.33\00:45:44.80 classical music. They were written by classical 00:45:44.80\00:45:47.23 composers, the hymns can be a very beneficial 00:45:47.23\00:45:49.63 thing as far as the brain is concerned. 00:45:49.63\00:45:52.13 This study, 24 university students performed 00:45:52.70\00:45:55.80 two tasks of attention. Positive moods were 00:45:55.80\00:45:58.00 induced by playing Bach's Brandenburg 00:45:58.00\00:45:59.80 Concerto No. 3 and negative moods by 00:45:59.80\00:46:02.73 Prokofiev piece played at half speed. 00:46:02.73\00:46:05.36 Now that tells you something else, not all 00:46:05.80\00:46:07.73 classical is helpful. Prokofievs doesn't have 00:46:07.73\00:46:10.86 that melodious classical and particularly when 00:46:10.86\00:46:15.53 its played it will induce problems to the brain 00:46:15.53\00:46:18.60 but when its played at half speed its even more 00:46:18.60\00:46:20.66 problematic and it will induce depression in 00:46:20.66\00:46:23.43 anybody who listens to it. Interestingly the up, 00:46:23.43\00:46:26.43 the opposite would be in fact in Bach's 00:46:26.43\00:46:28.66 Brandenburg Concerto. Even if you don't have 00:46:28.66\00:46:30.80 a relish for classical music, if you listen to 00:46:30.80\00:46:33.43 Bach's Brandenburg Concerto you'll actually 00:46:33.43\00:46:35.50 improve your frontal lobe and your happiness 00:46:35.50\00:46:39.03 scale. To produce a neutral mood participants 00:46:39.03\00:46:41.86 read a series of facts and figures about 00:46:41.86\00:46:44.06 Canada. Hopefully there aren't any Canadians 00:46:44.06\00:46:46.90 here but if there are that's how they induce 00:46:46.90\00:46:49.83 the neutral mood. The study showed when 00:46:49.83\00:46:53.03 they were in a positive mood participants 00:46:53.03\00:46:55.20 scored higher on remote associates task - a 00:46:55.20\00:46:58.20 measure of creative thinking. 00:46:58.20\00:46:59.70 When feeling happy, Anderson explained, 00:47:00.86\00:47:02.83 "your attentional window is actually bigger 00:47:02.83\00:47:05.73 - it's like looking through a big widow versus 00:47:05.73\00:47:07.90 a small window." And so creativity along with 00:47:07.90\00:47:10.96 frontal lobe function significantly improves. 00:47:10.96\00:47:13.96 Alvin Toffler comes from the very secular 00:47:14.70\00:47:16.80 perspective as many of these scientists do, 00:47:16.80\00:47:18.86 but he states this constant stimulation of 00:47:18.86\00:47:21.76 the senses shuts down the analytical processes. 00:47:21.76\00:47:25.60 And this I think underscores one of the 00:47:25.60\00:47:28.20 reasons why we are seeing an all time high 00:47:28.20\00:47:32.26 rates of depression in the western world to a 00:47:32.26\00:47:35.43 large degree. We have more fun things to do 00:47:35.43\00:47:38.20 than ever before in human history and if 00:47:38.20\00:47:40.36 these fun things prevented or treated 00:47:40.36\00:47:42.10 depression what should we see? We should 00:47:42.10\00:47:45.10 see the lowest rates of depression ever 00:47:45.10\00:47:47.30 recorded in human history, but yet we have 00:47:47.30\00:47:49.26 higher rates and part of those higher rates is a 00:47:49.26\00:47:51.53 lot of the entertainment and fun things 00:47:51.53\00:47:53.76 including the music, videos games, other 00:47:53.76\00:47:57.26 forms of entertainment actually suppress the 00:47:57.26\00:47:59.93 analytical processes. As Alvin Toffler says 00:47:59.93\00:48:02.63 constant stimulation of the senses shuts down 00:48:02.63\00:48:05.10 the analytical processes and ultimately shuts 00:48:05.10\00:48:08.10 down the ability to face life rationally. 00:48:08.10\00:48:10.73 What will happen? He says, this leads to 00:48:10.73\00:48:12.90 escape techniques that involve withdrawal, 00:48:12.90\00:48:14.90 apathy and rejection of disciplined thinking 00:48:14.90\00:48:17.80 when faced with difficult duties and decisions, 00:48:17.80\00:48:20.23 and what sets it all off? It's that constant 00:48:20.23\00:48:23.23 stimulation. You not only have the syncopated 00:48:23.23\00:48:25.73 rock and roll music, you have the essential 00:48:25.73\00:48:27.63 images on the screen, moving in rapid 00:48:27.63\00:48:30.13 succession we call it MTV, showing a very 00:48:30.13\00:48:33.80 profound effect in regards to reducing 00:48:33.80\00:48:36.93 frontal lobe function in a profound adverse 00:48:36.93\00:48:39.63 effect in regards to IQ as well. 00:48:39.63\00:48:43.33 Well the brain is a lot like a muscle, if we 00:48:44.76\00:48:48.03 don't use it what's going to happen? 00:48:48.03\00:48:50.40 We are going to lose it. And so we actually 00:48:51.23\00:48:53.13 need to use our analytical portions of 00:48:53.13\00:48:56.16 our brain to preserve as well as to expand our 00:48:56.16\00:49:00.10 intelligence. There is a book written called 00:49:00.10\00:49:03.00 education by the pen of Ellen White. 00:49:03.00\00:49:05.10 Secretary of Education California recently 00:49:06.30\00:49:08.63 said it's far ahead of its time and if the state 00:49:08.63\00:49:11.16 of California would apply these principles in 00:49:11.16\00:49:14.33 their educational system they would lead the 00:49:14.33\00:49:16.26 world in education. No doubt a lot of the 00:49:16.26\00:49:18.96 statements that she has made have been now 00:49:19.53\00:49:22.30 shown to be true in educational studies, 00:49:22.30\00:49:24.56 but in the middle of this book she says, 00:49:25.03\00:49:26.50 as a means of intellectual training 00:49:26.50\00:49:28.76 the Bible is more effective than any other 00:49:29.66\00:49:32.16 book, or all other books combined. 00:49:32.16\00:49:34.73 This is why the complete AYC experience can 00:49:35.86\00:49:38.83 actually enhance your IQ, because we are 00:49:38.83\00:49:41.96 studying the Bible. She says, the greatness of 00:49:41.96\00:49:44.40 its themes, the dignified simplicity of 00:49:44.40\00:49:46.53 its utterances, the beauty of its imagery, 00:49:46.53\00:49:49.16 quicken and uplift the thoughts as nothing else 00:49:49.16\00:49:51.10 can. I am convinced that almost 100 00:51:01.03\00:51:04.00 percent of her statements are now 00:51:04.00\00:51:05.80 substantially supported by the scientific 00:51:05.80\00:51:08.00 evidence that has been developed during the 00:51:08.00\00:51:09.73 past 2-3 decades. And then he went on, 00:51:09.73\00:51:12.80 what I have come to realize to even deeply 00:51:12.80\00:51:16.06 worry about is why it is that this message of 00:51:16.06\00:51:19.10 Ellen White and others has been so mislaid on 00:51:19.10\00:51:21.70 shelves out of sight. It is abundantly clear to 00:51:21.70\00:51:26.23 me that now is the time to bring this forward 00:51:26.23\00:51:28.63 in whatever way that each of us are able to 00:51:28.63\00:51:32.46 do. So, I ask you here this afternoon do you 00:51:32.46\00:51:36.43 want to be more intelligent. Do you want 00:51:36.43\00:51:39.83 to be more analytical? Therefore he 00:53:00.56\00:53:03.56 requested the prince of the eunuchs that he 00:53:03.56\00:53:05.23 might not defile himself. Daniel purposed in 00:53:05.23\00:53:10.20 his heart and other way of saying that is 00:53:10.20\00:53:12.23 Daniel stepped out in faith and followed the 00:53:12.23\00:53:14.86 Lord's plan. Now some people might say well 00:53:14.86\00:53:17.53 wait a minute we don't have the King's meat. 00:53:17.53\00:53:19.13 I saw right here in Sydney, Australia Burger 00:53:19.13\00:53:22.80 King. I found, I even saw a Dairy Queen, 00:53:22.80\00:53:28.40 there is lot of royal food around here still, 00:53:28.40\00:53:32.60 and so you have the choice between the royal 00:53:32.60\00:53:35.00 food or what the culture is saying that 00:53:35.00\00:53:37.56 you should eat or you have a choice of 00:53:37.56\00:53:40.30 purposing in your heart and like Daniel 00:53:40.30\00:53:43.30 stepping out in faith. Verse 9 says, 00:53:43.30\00:53:47.56 the Lord poured favor and tender love into the 00:53:48.73\00:53:51.50 prince of the eunuchs for Daniel. And so who 00:53:51.50\00:53:57.00 was it that poured that favor and tender love. 00:53:57.00\00:53:59.10 It was the Lord who poured at him in response 00:54:00.60\00:54:03.10 to Daniel's faith. Now another word for favor 00:54:03.10\00:54:06.26 and tender love is great, so Daniel stepped out 00:54:06.26\00:54:09.90 in faith and the Lord poured grace into his 00:54:09.90\00:54:12.83 life and the Lord is wanting to pour more 00:54:12.83\00:54:16.56 grace into your life and he is just waiting for 00:54:16.56\00:54:20.30 your to step out in faith and follow his 00:54:20.30\00:54:23.00 plan. In ten days the first and in fact the 00:54:23.00\00:54:27.16 American medical association recently said 00:54:27.16\00:54:29.30 it's the first perspective epidemiological study 00:54:29.30\00:54:32.23 ever recorded in human history, in Daniel 00:54:32.23\00:54:34.73 chapter 1, in ten days they were healthier, 00:54:34.73\00:54:37.66 they looked better and in one year and half 00:54:37.93\00:54:40.80 their mental acuity was far above what had 00:54:40.80\00:54:43.76 ever being recorded there in Babylon. 00:54:43.76\00:54:45.63 Far better than the highest IQ people, 00:54:46.03\00:54:48.10 not just Daniel but anyone who participated 00:54:48.10\00:54:50.90 in Daniel's program. In fact Ellen White says 00:54:50.90\00:54:54.90 this, "dear youth, God calls upon you to do a 00:54:54.90\00:54:58.50 work which through his grace you can do." 00:54:58.50\00:55:01.16 Who is she writing this to? The youth, 00:55:02.53\00:55:05.36 I thought the health message was just for 00:55:05.36\00:55:07.13 people that were old and starting to get 00:55:07.13\00:55:08.86 disease. Now, the health message was much 00:55:08.86\00:55:11.96 more for the young people than it was the 00:55:11.96\00:55:13.76 older people but here is what else she says 00:55:13.76\00:55:16.00 show a purity of tastes, appetite and habits that 00:55:16.60\00:55:20.03 bears comparison with who? Daniel's. 00:55:20.03\00:55:23.40 God will reward you she says with four things, 00:55:23.40\00:55:25.80 calm nerves, a clear brain, unimpaired 00:55:26.20\00:55:30.26 judgment, keen perceptions. The youth of 00:55:30.26\00:55:34.40 today whose principles are firm and 00:55:34.40\00:55:36.76 unwavering will be blessed with health of 00:55:36.76\00:55:40.63 body, mind, and soul. And I am seeing many 00:55:40.63\00:55:44.80 young people take hold of this message more 00:55:44.80\00:55:46.93 than just less fortunately, then I told 00:55:46.93\00:55:48.86 you in the story of, to begin with, who is now 00:55:48.86\00:55:52.60 in medical school following the Lord's will 00:55:52.60\00:55:55.40 and will be powerfully used of God. 00:55:55.40\00:55:57.46 The wisest man who ever lived said, wisdom 00:55:57.86\00:56:00.16 is better than rubies, and he had lots of 00:56:00.16\00:56:03.30 rubies, lots of riches in fact he is estimated to 00:56:03.30\00:56:06.20 be the richest ever that walked the planet, 00:56:06.20\00:56:09.63 as far as the amount of money in the total 00:56:09.63\00:56:11.90 monetary supply. That's how you measure 00:56:11.90\00:56:13.76 wealth. And he says if you have a choice 00:56:13.76\00:56:17.40 between rubies and wisdom what should you 00:56:17.40\00:56:19.10 choose? Wisdom, and then he says all the 00:56:19.10\00:56:23.50 things that may be desired are not to be 00:56:23.50\00:56:25.36 compared to it. Whatever it is that your heart 00:56:25.36\00:56:28.20 desires, there is something equally 00:56:28.20\00:56:31.10 important or more important and that is 00:56:31.10\00:56:34.10 wisdom. I will close with a couple of 00:56:34.10\00:56:38.63 statements by the pen of Ellen White. 00:56:38.63\00:56:40.30 Be determined to become as useful and 00:56:40.93\00:56:43.46 efficient as God calls you to be. Be thorough 00:56:43.46\00:56:47.13 and faithful in whatever you undertake. 00:56:47.13\00:56:49.06 Procure every advantage within your reach for 00:56:50.90\00:56:54.63 the strengthening of the intellect. And then a 00:56:54.63\00:56:59.13 wonderful promise that she tells us. 00:56:59.13\00:57:01.00 The Lord has given man capacity for what 00:57:01.70\00:57:04.50 type of improvement? Continual 00:57:04.50\00:57:06.96 improvement, he has created us for the 00:57:06.96\00:57:09.90 potential for continual improvement, 00:57:09.90\00:57:11.90 in fact I have to remind people sometime the 00:57:11.90\00:57:14.03 biggest room in the world is the room for 00:57:14.03\00:57:16.80 improvement. And so don't get discouraged, 00:57:16.80\00:57:19.56 there is room for improvement for you as 00:57:19.56\00:57:22.06 well and the Lord has given you the capacity 00:57:22.06\00:57:24.33 for continual improvement, has granted 00:57:24.33\00:57:26.43 all possible aid in the work. And then this very 00:57:26.43\00:57:29.10 interesting statement through the provision of 00:57:29.10\00:57:30.96 divine grace we may attain almost to the 00:57:30.96\00:57:35.46 excellence of what? Angels.
