From the 3ABN Worship Center 00:00:59.01\00:01:01.01 it's the Ten Commandments Weekend 2008: 00:01:01.21\00:01:03.81 The Constitution of Grace. 00:01:04.01\00:01:06.42 Welcome back. We are having a wonderful time here 00:01:09.66\00:01:13.03 in Thompsonville today. 00:01:13.13\00:01:14.90 We have just listened to some 00:01:15.10\00:01:16.56 fantastic music, and Jim Rhodes 00:01:16.66\00:01:20.19 and Donna Klein were playing for us on the organ and the piano. 00:01:20.29\00:01:23.63 And we've been receiving the commitments 00:01:23.83\00:01:26.10 that we've been praying about for several days. 00:01:26.20\00:01:28.54 And we know that some of you at home are still praying 00:01:28.74\00:01:32.63 and making decisions concerning your gift for this ministry 00:01:32.73\00:01:38.18 at this time. We just feel like that with 00:01:38.28\00:01:42.32 earth's condition as it is... 00:01:42.42\00:01:45.75 I mean, folks, let's face it. Things are not normal. 00:01:45.85\00:01:49.14 That's all there is to it. 00:01:49.34\00:01:50.69 Never in our lifetime have we seen anything like 00:01:50.89\00:01:54.16 the energy crisis that we have. Or let's put it this way, 00:01:54.26\00:01:58.47 "the crisis at the pump. " 00:01:58.67\00:02:00.47 It's a crisis when you go fill up; 00:02:00.68\00:02:02.59 it's a crisis when I fill up. 00:02:02.69\00:02:04.21 And I just sit there in utter amazement 00:02:04.41\00:02:07.43 when I hate to tell you how little I have paid for gasoline 00:02:07.53\00:02:11.68 in my life. Some of you remember Gulftane at 19.9. 00:02:11.78\00:02:17.24 And I remember going through Missouri here one time on my way 00:02:17.44\00:02:21.88 from Andrews University back down to my home in Dallas, 00:02:21.98\00:02:25.63 and I paid 11.9 for gasoline in Joplin, Missouri. 00:02:25.83\00:02:31.07 Now I'll never forget that as long as I live. 00:02:31.17\00:02:34.28 11.9. That's the lowest I've ever paid for gas. 00:02:34.49\00:02:38.37 That's almost like they pay you to take it, you know. 00:02:38.57\00:02:41.64 I mean, it was... So we are living in a world with 00:02:41.74\00:02:45.81 some conditions that are different than we have ever 00:02:45.91\00:02:49.07 faced. Folks, difficult times are ahead. 00:02:49.17\00:02:53.51 Last night we had a storm. 00:02:53.71\00:02:56.15 I stood at the door and I prayed as I saw the lightning 00:02:56.35\00:03:00.17 about midnight. I said: "Lord, please, let this storm 00:03:00.27\00:03:03.67 pass totally by. Help it not to touch our place because 00:03:03.77\00:03:08.37 we have people camping out here, sleeping in cars, 00:03:08.47\00:03:11.80 sleeping outside. " And He did not let the storm 00:03:11.90\00:03:17.89 pass. But I got up at 4:30 AM and came over here to see 00:03:17.99\00:03:21.41 how people were. And, you know, they were all 00:03:21.51\00:03:24.32 pretty comfortable. 00:03:24.42\00:03:26.67 He didn't let the storm totally avoid us, although I don't think 00:03:26.87\00:03:30.46 we got the big brunt of it, 00:03:30.57\00:03:32.42 but He did give us the courage to go through it, 00:03:32.62\00:03:35.50 and He gave these people the ability to go through it. 00:03:35.70\00:03:39.09 That's the way it is often with storms. 00:03:39.29\00:03:41.66 We're not going to avoid the storm to come. 00:03:41.86\00:03:43.37 He's only going to give us a certain amount of time 00:03:43.48\00:03:45.42 to present this gospel of the kingdom to the world. 00:03:45.52\00:03:48.99 We need to take advantage of it. 00:03:49.19\00:03:51.98 There's going to come a day when we will not be able 00:03:52.28\00:03:56.83 to have freedom of the broadcast waves. 00:03:56.93\00:03:59.57 We will not be able to preach these messages: the undiluted 00:03:59.78\00:04:03.34 three angels' messages. 00:04:03.44\00:04:05.19 We must do it while we can! 00:04:05.39\00:04:07.81 And then we also want to be really moving into the Internet 00:04:08.94\00:04:13.59 stronger than ever before because I believe that will be 00:04:13.69\00:04:16.11 the last thing they'll be able to shut down with the gospel. 00:04:16.21\00:04:21.07 You see, they can shut down... the FCC and so forth... 00:04:21.27\00:04:25.23 they can shut you down on your broadcast, but 00:04:25.43\00:04:29.72 the Internet will be the last thing I think 00:04:29.82\00:04:32.82 that we will not be able to go. So we need to be stronger there 00:04:32.92\00:04:36.81 with our message so that people can get us all over the world 00:04:36.91\00:04:40.82 in the most remote places of the world by Internet. 00:04:41.02\00:04:44.43 Well, we're so happy that all of you could be here today. 00:04:44.63\00:04:48.14 I know that so far you've had a great spiritual feast, 00:04:48.34\00:04:51.76 haven't you? Amen! We have. I have! 00:04:51.86\00:04:54.65 I put a chair back here, and I'm not missing one minute. 00:04:54.75\00:04:58.84 I mean I've got a monitor and we look at it 00:04:59.04\00:05:01.78 and we are able to take care of some of the things that happen. 00:05:01.88\00:05:04.14 And we are ready to run out here if needed. 00:05:04.34\00:05:06.62 But I haven't missed a minute, and I've been so blessed 00:05:06.82\00:05:10.96 by everything that we are hearing from this pulpit. 00:05:11.16\00:05:14.28 And now it's time to listen to some good music. 00:05:14.31\00:05:18.05 Rudy Micelli is coming back with us, and he's going to do 00:05:18.26\00:05:23.07 a song called "Far From All Care. " 00:05:23.27\00:05:26.90 And then after that we are going to hear 00:05:27.10\00:05:30.14 from Pastor Stephen Bohr. 00:05:30.24\00:05:32.22 Pastor Bohr, one of our favorites here on 3ABN, 00:05:32.42\00:05:36.12 and a man of God. He's been an administrator, 00:05:36.32\00:05:41.07 a pastor, a Bible teacher, 00:05:41.17\00:05:44.41 and he is for sure a Bible student. 00:05:44.61\00:05:48.77 And he will be speaking to us at this 11 o'clock hour, 00:05:48.97\00:05:53.89 and on the fourth commandment, the Sabbath commandment. Rudy... 00:05:54.09\00:05:59.79 Far from all care we 00:06:27.62\00:06:32.95 hail the Sabbath morning; 00:06:33.05\00:06:38.84 O'er waving fields and 00:06:39.04\00:06:44.51 from the distant sea 00:06:44.71\00:06:50.24 Swell notes of praise in 00:06:50.54\00:06:56.43 harmony resounding 00:06:56.63\00:07:02.03 As all creation 00:07:02.71\00:07:07.07 turns her heart, her heart 00:07:07.27\00:07:13.17 to Thee. 00:07:13.37\00:07:19.28 What a privilege we have to come in the presence of our Lord 00:07:24.15\00:07:27.10 in His holy name and rest. 00:07:27.20\00:07:31.24 Under His wings 00:07:31.54\00:07:36.23 under His wings, 00:07:36.46\00:07:40.67 Who from His love 00:07:40.91\00:07:45.15 can sever? 00:07:45.35\00:07:49.29 Under His wings 00:07:49.59\00:07:52.93 my soul shall abide, 00:07:53.13\00:07:57.67 safely abide 00:07:57.87\00:08:03.60 forever. 00:08:04.00\00:08:09.90 Under His wings 00:08:25.33\00:08:29.25 my soul shall abide, 00:08:29.45\00:08:34.23 safely abide 00:08:34.43\00:08:40.35 forever. 00:08:41.81\00:08:47.72 Safely abide 00:09:00.36\00:09:04.49 forever. 00:09:04.79\00:09:10.71 Good morning. Good morning. 00:09:32.58\00:09:35.43 It's nice to see this place 00:09:35.63\00:09:37.68 totally full. 00:09:37.78\00:09:38.96 Praise the Lord! Or almost totally full. 00:09:39.16\00:09:41.28 I've been given the task of preaching on 00:09:43.95\00:09:47.92 perhaps the most important commandment 00:09:50.29\00:09:52.53 in the 10 Commandments, at least for Seventh-day Adventists. 00:09:52.63\00:09:55.11 But before we study this commandment, we want to ask 00:09:55.94\00:09:59.47 God's special blessing, and so I invite you to bow your heads 00:09:59.63\00:10:02.73 with me as we pray. 00:10:02.83\00:10:04.07 Father in Heaven, We thank You for 00:10:05.02\00:10:08.97 the wonderful privilege you have given us of being here 00:10:09.17\00:10:11.74 for Ten Commandments Weekend. 00:10:11.84\00:10:14.24 Father, the world is falling apart at the seams. 00:10:15.37\00:10:19.25 And, as David, our eyes shed tears, 00:10:21.20\00:10:26.51 rivers of tears, 00:10:26.71\00:10:28.58 because they have broken Your law. 00:10:28.79\00:10:30.84 I ask Father that this morning as we study the 4th Commandment 00:10:31.04\00:10:34.90 that Your Holy Spirit will be with us to instruct us. 00:10:35.00\00:10:38.43 I especially ask that You will be with those who are watching 00:10:39.21\00:10:42.48 on television. 00:10:42.68\00:10:44.84 Lord, I ask that You will soften hearts 00:10:45.04\00:10:47.61 and that Your Spirit will speak to each person 00:10:47.81\00:10:51.21 who is watching today. 00:10:51.31\00:10:52.53 We thank you, Father, for hear- ing and answering our prayer. 00:10:53.45\00:10:55.83 For we ask it in Jesus' name, Amen. 00:10:55.93\00:10:58.86 I'd like to begin by reading the 4th Commandment as we find it 00:11:01.85\00:11:05.23 in Exodus chapter 20 and verses 8 through 11. 00:11:05.33\00:11:10.42 "Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy. 00:11:11.48\00:11:14.06 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 00:11:15.05\00:11:17.90 but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. 00:11:18.20\00:11:21.84 In it you shall do no work. 00:11:22.73\00:11:25.22 You, nor your son, nor your daughter, 00:11:25.52\00:11:28.71 nor your male servant, nor your female servant, 00:11:28.91\00:11:32.20 nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is 00:11:32.40\00:11:35.75 within your gates. " 00:11:35.85\00:11:37.10 And then we have the motivation clause for keeping the Sabbath. 00:11:37.30\00:11:41.63 In verse 11: 00:11:41.83\00:11:42.93 "For" - that means because - "in six days the Lord made the 00:11:43.03\00:11:47.42 heavens and the earth, the sea, 00:11:47.52\00:11:49.91 and all that is in them and rested the seventh day. 00:11:50.01\00:11:53.99 Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day 00:11:54.19\00:11:57.19 and hallowed it. " 00:11:57.39\00:11:59.03 The Fourth Commandment makes it very clear 00:12:00.00\00:12:02.67 that God expects us to keep the Sabbath because 00:12:02.87\00:12:07.35 God established the Sabbath as a Creation ordinance. 00:12:07.45\00:12:10.89 In other words, the Sabbath does not originate with Israel. 00:12:11.09\00:12:16.55 The Sabbath originates at Creation. 00:12:16.75\00:12:20.17 Before sin when there was no Jew. 00:12:20.67\00:12:26.65 In other words, the Sabbath was made for all mankind, 00:12:26.95\00:12:30.46 and in its original intention it had nothing to do with 00:12:30.56\00:12:35.12 redemption. 00:12:35.23\00:12:36.85 In its original intention. 00:12:37.05\00:12:39.24 Now, I've noticed that the theme of our weekend is 00:12:40.69\00:12:44.47 The Constitution of Grace. 00:12:44.57\00:12:46.88 So this morning I'm not going to speak about the Sabbath 00:12:47.68\00:12:50.80 commandment from the perspective of Creation 00:12:50.91\00:12:53.94 but from the perspective of redemption, 00:12:54.14\00:12:57.31 which is a second reason to keep the Sabbath. 00:12:57.51\00:13:01.61 It is a reason that God gives after sin. 00:13:01.81\00:13:05.16 It is a secondary purpose for the observance of the Sabbath. 00:13:05.36\00:13:09.38 The primary, original purpose was in order to commemorate 00:13:09.48\00:13:13.39 Creation before sin, before there were any Jews. 00:13:13.49\00:13:17.17 But after sin God gave the Sabbath an additional function, 00:13:17.37\00:13:22.41 and that is to point to redemption. 00:13:22.61\00:13:25.02 In fact it's interesting... the theme that we have 00:13:25.94\00:13:28.92 is The Constitution of Grace. 00:13:29.02\00:13:30.82 Do you know that grace was not even necessary before 00:13:31.02\00:13:33.66 Adam and Eve sinned? 00:13:33.76\00:13:35.14 Allow me to read you an interesting statement that 00:13:36.96\00:13:39.97 we find in God's Amazing Grace page 10. 00:13:40.07\00:13:42.98 Here Ellen White says this: 00:13:45.04\00:13:47.36 "By disobeying the commands of God, 00:13:48.53\00:13:51.65 man fell under the condemnation of the law. 00:13:51.85\00:13:54.80 This fall called for the grace of God to appear 00:13:56.01\00:14:00.89 in behalf of sinners. We should never have learned 00:14:01.00\00:14:06.20 the meaning of this word grace had we not fallen. 00:14:06.41\00:14:10.88 God loves the sinless angels who do His service 00:14:11.08\00:14:15.32 and are obedient to all His commands. 00:14:15.52\00:14:17.87 But He does not give them grace. 00:14:18.07\00:14:21.31 These heavenly beings know not of grace. 00:14:21.51\00:14:25.84 They have never needed it for they have never sinned. 00:14:26.04\00:14:30.07 Grace is an attribute of God shown to undeserving 00:14:30.28\00:14:35.65 human beings. " 00:14:35.75\00:14:38.16 So in other words, before sin there was no need of grace. 00:14:39.29\00:14:41.75 So when we talk about The Constitution of Grace 00:14:41.85\00:14:44.14 and the 4th Commandment in the context of 00:14:44.24\00:14:46.39 The Constitution of Grace, we need to talk about the 00:14:46.50\00:14:49.10 4th Commandment in the context of redemption. 00:14:49.23\00:14:51.73 Now, some people are not aware of the fact that the 00:14:54.14\00:14:56.77 4th Commandment is repeated twice in the writings of Moses. 00:14:56.88\00:15:01.34 The first time the motivation is Creation, 00:15:02.29\00:15:04.79 but the second time the motivation is redemption. 00:15:05.73\00:15:09.30 Turn in your Bibles with me to Deuteronomy chapter 5 00:15:09.50\00:15:12.52 and verses 12 through 15. 00:15:12.72\00:15:14.36 Deuteronomy chapter 5 and verses 12 through 15. 00:15:14.56\00:15:17.45 This is the other place where the Ten Commandments are 00:15:17.55\00:15:20.98 written in the writings of Moses. 00:15:21.08\00:15:22.68 It says there - 00:15:22.98\00:15:24.87 and I am reading from the New King James Version: 00:15:24.97\00:15:27.52 The Sabbath was a sign of the redemption of Israel 00:16:26.28\00:16:29.87 from bondage, and we know that the redemption of Israel from 00:16:29.97\00:16:33.42 bondage foreshadows our redemption from bondage. 00:16:33.52\00:16:37.11 Because the Passover which was the sign of redemption 00:16:37.31\00:16:40.36 points forward to the redemption in Jesus Christ 00:16:40.46\00:16:43.82 who is our Passover. 00:16:43.85\00:16:45.62 So the Sabbath must have some relationship to not only 00:16:46.95\00:16:50.77 Creation but also to redemption. 00:16:50.88\00:16:53.91 And in our study today we are going to see the relationship of 00:16:54.11\00:16:57.74 the Sabbath with redemption. 00:16:57.84\00:16:59.89 Now turn in your Bibles with me to John chapter 5 00:17:01.04\00:17:04.71 and we are going to read verses 39 and then we'll go 00:17:04.91\00:17:08.82 to verses 46 and 47. 00:17:08.92\00:17:11.55 John chapter 5, verse 39 and then we'll go to 00:17:11.75\00:17:16.53 verses 46 and 47. 00:17:16.63\00:17:19.67 I want you to see that Jesus Christ is the center of the 00:17:20.70\00:17:25.61 Old Testament. 00:17:25.71\00:17:27.28 Everything in the Old Testament is centered in Jesus. 00:17:27.58\00:17:31.26 Here Jesus said in verse 39 to the Jews of His day: 00:17:32.59\00:17:35.95 And Jesus is speaking about the Old Testament scriptures. 00:17:48.51\00:17:51.35 Who is at the center of the writings of Moses? 00:18:16.82\00:18:19.94 Jesus is at the center of the writings of Moses. 00:18:20.73\00:18:24.11 In Desire of Ages, page 211, 00:18:24.41\00:18:27.37 we find this remarkable statement of Ellen White. 00:18:27.58\00:18:31.21 And she goes even beyond what most scholars... where most 00:18:31.41\00:18:35.92 scholars go. She says there on page 211 of Desire of Ages: 00:18:36.02\00:18:40.89 And you remember when Jesus was on the Road to Emmaus 00:19:07.16\00:19:10.29 and He caught up to these two followers of His. 00:19:10.39\00:19:13.02 And He finally explained to them what had happened that weekend. 00:19:13.22\00:19:17.93 The Bible tells us that beginning with Moses 00:19:18.13\00:19:20.77 and from all of the prophets He declared to them 00:19:20.97\00:19:24.28 in all of the scriptures the things concerning Himself. 00:19:24.38\00:19:28.23 Later on as they were going back to Jerusalem, one of them said 00:19:28.43\00:19:31.87 to the other: "Did not our hearts burn within ourselves 00:19:31.97\00:19:35.94 as He opened unto us the scriptures? " 00:19:36.04\00:19:39.18 In other words, the scriptures of the Old Testament 00:19:39.38\00:19:42.49 are DEAD without Jesus. 00:19:42.59\00:19:44.82 But when Jesus pointed to Himself in the scriptures, 00:19:45.02\00:19:48.09 they came alive and these men's' hearts burned within them 00:19:48.30\00:19:52.97 because they finally understood the meaning of scripture. 00:19:53.07\00:19:56.93 Because they saw Jesus in the Old Testament scriptures. 00:19:57.13\00:20:00.36 Now, in our study this morning 00:20:01.40\00:20:04.70 we want to take a look at one of those verses from the 00:20:04.90\00:20:09.88 writings of Moses that points to Jesus 00:20:09.98\00:20:13.16 and His relationship to the Sabbath. 00:20:13.26\00:20:15.39 Deuteronomy chapter 8 and verse 3. 00:20:16.22\00:20:19.13 Deuteronomy chapter 8 and verse 3. 00:20:19.34\00:20:22.17 By the way, for those who are watching on television, 00:20:22.37\00:20:24.72 there are many Christians today that say 00:20:24.92\00:20:26.85 "We are New Testament Christians. " 00:20:26.95\00:20:29.56 There is no such thing as a New Testament Christian. 00:20:29.77\00:20:32.43 You see folks, there are Bible Christians. 00:20:32.73\00:20:36.07 And the Christian world today is repeating in many ways the 00:20:36.37\00:20:39.81 same mistake that the Jews repeated. 00:20:39.91\00:20:41.94 Because the Jews did not see Jesus in the Old Testament, 00:20:42.14\00:20:45.80 and Christians today can't see Him either. 00:20:46.00\00:20:48.35 So what's the difference? 00:20:49.50\00:20:51.76 The fact is that the Old Testament is FULL of Jesus. 00:20:51.97\00:20:55.53 On every page, every line has Jesus in it. 00:20:55.74\00:21:00.39 Now, Deuteronomy 8 verse 3 is talking about the manna 00:21:01.70\00:21:04.86 and the reason why God gave the manna. 00:21:06.34\00:21:09.25 Let's read that verse. And I'm reading from the 00:21:09.46\00:21:13.06 New King James Version. 00:21:13.16\00:21:14.98 It says there, 00:21:15.19\00:21:17.08 God speaking actually through Moses to Israel: 00:21:17.18\00:21:21.28 What did God feed Israel with? 00:21:32.40\00:21:34.28 Manna. Why did He feed them with manna? 00:21:34.48\00:21:37.10 Because it was good food! 00:21:37.30\00:21:41.50 Yeah, that too! 00:21:41.70\00:21:43.77 But that's not the real reason. 00:21:43.97\00:21:45.50 Notice what it continues saying: 00:21:45.70\00:21:47.46 now comes the explanation why God gave the manna 00:21:49.17\00:21:52.80 Why did God give the manna? 00:22:06.79\00:22:08.34 Because He wanted to teach Israel that the manna 00:22:08.45\00:22:11.93 represented what? The Word of God. 00:22:12.03\00:22:15.06 And man lives by every word that proceeds out of the mouth 00:22:15.16\00:22:19.00 of God. The manna represented the Word of God. 00:22:19.20\00:22:23.53 By the way, the apostle Paul tells us that that food 00:22:25.55\00:22:28.10 was spiritual food. 00:22:28.20\00:22:29.78 If you go with me to I Corinthians chapter 10 00:22:29.98\00:22:32.26 and verses 1 through 4 the apostle Paul is reminiscing 00:22:32.36\00:22:35.64 about the history of Israel, and I want you to notice 00:22:35.74\00:22:38.05 what he says in I Corinthians chapter 10 and verse 1: 00:22:38.15\00:22:42.70 What was the manna? 00:23:01.91\00:23:03.60 It wasn't physical food only, it was spiritual food. 00:23:03.80\00:23:07.62 I wish I had some time this morning to talk to you about 00:23:22.44\00:23:25.02 the rock episodes in the Old Testament. 00:23:25.12\00:23:27.08 Wow! What Messianic prophecies those are! 00:23:27.39\00:23:31.95 You see, maybe I'll just do a little sidelight here 00:23:32.84\00:23:36.15 and then I'll talk faster and get caught up. 00:23:36.45\00:23:39.48 You see the rock represents Jesus. 00:23:39.88\00:23:43.40 The rod represents the punishment of God, 00:23:43.61\00:23:46.65 the judgment of God. 00:23:46.85\00:23:48.00 Every time that Moses raised his rod and the rod brought 00:23:48.20\00:23:52.49 a judgment of God upon Egypt. 00:23:52.59\00:23:55.67 So the rod represents judgment. 00:23:55.78\00:23:57.98 Even when we use it for our children. Isn't that right? 00:23:58.18\00:24:02.10 If we still use it, that is. 00:24:02.41\00:24:05.27 And, of course, the water that comes from the rock represents 00:24:05.47\00:24:09.36 the Holy Spirit. "We've all been made to drink of one spirit, " 00:24:09.46\00:24:13.92 the Bible tells us. 00:24:14.12\00:24:15.12 And if you read John 7:37-39 you're going to notice there 00:24:15.32\00:24:19.47 that the water that Jesus says "Come to Me and drink. " 00:24:19.57\00:24:22.41 And He says the water that comes forth is the Holy Spirit 00:24:22.52\00:24:25.77 that was poured out on the Day of Pentecost. 00:24:25.87\00:24:28.12 So the first rock episode Moses is commanded to strike the rock 00:24:28.42\00:24:32.65 and the rock will give its waters. 00:24:32.85\00:24:34.50 The striking of the rock represents the judgment that 00:24:34.70\00:24:38.23 God... that fell upon Jesus. 00:24:38.33\00:24:41.62 And as a result He was able to pour out what? 00:24:41.82\00:24:44.89 The Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost. 00:24:45.09\00:24:47.82 But there's a second rock episode. 00:24:48.02\00:24:49.64 God told Moses "Now you don't strike the rock, 00:24:49.84\00:24:52.78 you speak to the rock and the rock will give you its waters. " 00:24:52.88\00:24:55.70 But he struck the rock, giving the impression that Jesus 00:24:55.90\00:24:59.29 was going to have to fall under the judgment of God 00:24:59.39\00:25:01.54 more than once. You see, now to get the Holy Spirit 00:25:01.64\00:25:04.93 Jesus doesn't have to die again. All we have to do 00:25:05.03\00:25:07.88 is ask and we will receive. 00:25:07.98\00:25:10.17 All we have to do is pray, 00:25:10.37\00:25:12.03 and the rock will pour forth its blessing. Amen. 00:25:12.23\00:25:15.70 Now let's get back to the manna. 00:25:16.10\00:25:17.87 John chapter 6 verses 48-51 explicitly tells us 00:25:20.02\00:25:26.00 what the manna represents. 00:25:26.10\00:25:28.49 We notice that it's spiritual food. 00:25:28.69\00:25:31.32 It represents the Word of God. 00:25:31.52\00:25:33.10 But now Jesus is going to make this explicit. 00:25:33.30\00:25:36.37 It says there beginning in verse 48, 00:25:36.67\00:25:39.89 Jesus is speaking: 00:25:40.09\00:25:41.87 Now comes a very important point: 00:26:08.14\00:26:09.76 "And the bread that I shall give is My flesh. " 00:26:09.96\00:26:14.37 Don't miss that point. Don't forget it. 00:26:14.57\00:26:16.54 We are going to come back to it time and again... 00:26:16.74\00:26:18.47 Jesus says: "The bread that I shall give" - which is 00:26:18.67\00:26:21.63 the manna, right? because it comes from heaven - 00:26:21.73\00:26:23.73 "The bread that I shall give is My flesh which I shall give 00:26:23.94\00:26:29.43 for the life of the world. " 00:26:29.53\00:26:31.75 By the way, who is the Word of God? 00:26:31.95\00:26:34.88 "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God 00:26:35.08\00:26:40.66 and the Word WAS God. " 00:26:40.77\00:26:43.33 So the manna which represents the Word of God 00:26:43.53\00:26:46.80 actually represents whom? Jesus Christ. 00:26:47.00\00:26:50.11 What specific aspect of Jesus Christ? 00:26:50.31\00:26:53.30 It says here, Jesus speaking: 00:26:53.50\00:26:56.60 "The bread that I shall give is My... " What? 00:26:56.80\00:27:00.60 "My flesh which I shall give for the life of the world. " 00:27:00.81\00:27:04.51 The manna represents specifically His flesh 00:27:04.54\00:27:08.32 which was going to be torn for the salvation of the world. 00:27:08.53\00:27:11.92 I love this statement from Ellen White in the devotional 00:27:13.39\00:27:15.98 book "That I May Know Him" page 38. 00:27:16.08\00:27:18.36 Ellen White says: "What speech is to thought 00:27:18.56\00:27:21.99 so is Christ to the invisible Father. " 00:27:22.19\00:27:25.79 The Father thinks, and Jesus does what the Father thinks. 00:27:26.09\00:27:31.28 He's the expression of the thought of God. 00:27:31.48\00:27:35.11 He is the Word of God. 00:27:35.31\00:27:37.03 Now you say, where are you going with this idea of the manna? 00:27:37.33\00:27:40.73 That the manna represents the flesh of Jesus? 00:27:40.83\00:27:43.31 Well, in order to fully understand the manna, 00:27:43.52\00:27:45.87 we have to where God sent manna in Exodus 16, right? 00:27:45.97\00:27:49.90 So let's go back to Exodus chapter 16. 00:27:50.10\00:27:52.66 We are going to notice some incredible things this morning 00:27:52.86\00:27:54.85 about the manna. Things that perhaps we haven't seen before. 00:27:54.95\00:27:58.05 In the manna you have a fabulous Messianic prophecy. 00:27:58.25\00:28:01.79 We usually think that it only exalts the Sabbath 00:28:01.89\00:28:03.95 or it teaches health reform. Yes it does both of those things. 00:28:04.05\00:28:07.05 But there's more in the manna story than just health reform 00:28:07.25\00:28:10.92 or the Sabbath is the day of rest. 00:28:11.02\00:28:13.12 Exodus 16. You remember that manna was 00:28:13.42\00:28:18.31 rained from heaven how many days a week? 00:28:18.41\00:28:21.22 Six days a week. You're right. 00:28:21.52\00:28:24.60 Now, when the manna fell on Monday and people saved it 00:28:24.80\00:28:30.23 for Tuesday, what happened to the manna? 00:28:30.33\00:28:32.01 Two things. 00:28:32.21\00:28:35.78 Let's read it in Exodus 16 verses 19 and 20. 00:28:35.98\00:28:39.46 Now I want you to notice this. 00:28:58.55\00:28:59.72 How interesting! 00:29:10.49\00:29:12.32 Let me ask you... If you go to the grocery store 00:29:12.42\00:29:14.48 and you buy a loaf of bread 00:29:14.58\00:29:16.96 and you have it in your cupboard for a week, 00:29:17.16\00:29:19.12 it breeds worms and stinks. 00:29:19.32\00:29:21.58 Come on! The men wouldn't know this! 00:29:23.57\00:29:25.66 What happens with the bread? 00:29:28.66\00:29:30.44 It gets moldy. It gets moldy but it doesn't 00:29:30.65\00:29:32.53 breed worms and stink! 00:29:32.63\00:29:34.50 But the manna which represents the flesh of whom? 00:29:35.88\00:29:38.79 Jesus - of Jesus, bred worms and stank 00:29:38.89\00:29:42.28 when it was picked up Sunday for Monday, 00:29:42.38\00:29:45.38 Monday for Tuesday, Tuesday for Wednesday, 00:29:45.58\00:29:47.30 Wednesday for Thursday, Thursday for Friday. 00:29:47.40\00:29:49.47 It bred worms and stank. 00:29:50.63\00:29:53.07 But the Bible tells us that when the manna was picked up on 00:29:53.27\00:29:56.79 Friday something different happened on the Sabbath. 00:29:56.89\00:30:00.99 Go with me to Exodus chapter 16 verses 23 and 24. 00:30:01.19\00:30:06.23 Exodus 16 verses 23 and 24: 00:30:06.43\00:30:09.47 " a holy Sabbath to the Jews" 00:30:17.31\00:30:19.85 Just checking to make sure you're awake. 00:30:20.05\00:30:23.80 A holy Sabbath to whom? 00:30:24.00\00:30:27.27 TO THE LORD! 00:30:27.47\00:30:29.00 Wow! So when the manna was picked up on Friday 00:30:52.57\00:30:58.04 all day Sabbath it was just as fresh as it had been when? 00:30:58.14\00:31:03.25 On Friday! 00:31:03.45\00:31:04.95 It did not breed worms and it did not stink. 00:31:05.05\00:31:07.37 Let me ask you: what is it that breeds worms and stinks? 00:31:07.47\00:31:10.78 A corpse 00:31:12.58\00:31:14.02 breeds worms and stinks. 00:31:15.19\00:31:17.96 Now you say what does this all 00:31:19.35\00:31:21.37 have to do with the Sabbath 00:31:21.48\00:31:22.63 and Jesus and redemption? 00:31:22.73\00:31:24.45 A lot! 00:31:24.48\00:31:26.15 We must go to the gospels to discover what this passage 00:31:28.82\00:31:32.82 is teaching us. 00:31:32.92\00:31:34.01 Go with me to Matthew 27 verse 46 and verse 47. 00:31:34.22\00:31:37.90 Matthew 27 verses 46 and 47. This is speaking about Jesus 00:31:37.93\00:31:42.37 hanging on the cross of Calvary. 00:31:42.47\00:31:43.64 By the way, what day was Jesus hanging on the cross? 00:31:43.74\00:31:46.25 Friday. He was hanging on the cross on Friday! 00:31:46.45\00:31:49.42 And it says there in Matthew 27 and verse 46: 00:31:50.97\00:31:54.56 What is the ninth hour? 00:31:56.02\00:31:57.09 About 3 o'clock in the afternoon. That's right. 00:31:57.29\00:32:00.74 It says "about the ninth hour" 00:32:00.84\00:32:03.29 But those aren't His last words on the cross. 00:32:13.35\00:32:16.12 It was about the ninth hour. 00:32:16.23\00:32:17.92 There are some other words that Jesus spoke 00:32:19.19\00:32:21.16 about the ninth hour. 00:32:21.27\00:32:22.49 John 19 and verse 30. John chapter 19 and verse 30. 00:32:22.69\00:32:27.13 It says there: 00:32:27.33\00:32:28.53 By the way, there's another saying of Jesus 00:32:39.63\00:32:42.94 which He actually said after that, and that is 00:32:43.04\00:32:45.73 "Into... Father, into Your hands I" - what? - 00:32:45.93\00:32:48.94 "Father, into Your hands I commend My spirit. " 00:32:49.14\00:32:51.72 And then He died. 00:32:51.83\00:32:53.09 And that was exactly at the ninth hour. 00:32:53.29\00:32:56.74 So He said about the ninth hour, "Eloi, eloi, lama sabachthani? " 00:32:59.59\00:33:03.96 About the ninth hour He said "It is finished, " 00:33:04.26\00:33:07.66 and at the ninth hour He said "Father, into Your hands 00:33:07.87\00:33:12.13 I commend My spirit. " And Jesus died. 00:33:12.24\00:33:15.05 This would be about 3 o'clock in the afternoon. 00:33:15.35\00:33:19.08 Now if you go back to Exodus 12 and verse 6, 00:33:19.28\00:33:23.39 and I'm not going to go there now, 00:33:23.59\00:33:26.47 but you want to write this down. 00:33:26.67\00:33:29.23 You are going to discover something very interesting. 00:33:29.43\00:33:31.51 You'll only know this if you go to the Hebrew. 00:33:31.71\00:33:34.38 It's speaking about the sacrifice of the Passover lamb. 00:33:34.68\00:33:38.00 And it gives the exact moment when the Passover lamb 00:33:39.47\00:33:42.57 was to be sacrificed. 00:33:42.67\00:33:44.19 You know, most versions say "at twilight. " 00:33:45.44\00:33:49.09 That's not a good translation. 00:33:51.38\00:33:53.71 Literally in Hebrew it says "between the two evenings. " 00:33:53.91\00:33:59.60 "Between the two evenings. " 00:34:01.44\00:34:02.66 Now what do you mean "between the two evenings? " 00:34:02.76\00:34:04.47 You see the Jews believed that when the sun reached the 00:34:04.67\00:34:08.81 meridian and started its descent towards sundown, 00:34:08.91\00:34:13.80 that was the first evening because the afternoon was 00:34:13.90\00:34:16.18 beginning. The last evening is when the sun sets. 00:34:16.28\00:34:22.14 And so you have this period between when the sun begins 00:34:23.20\00:34:28.02 its descent after it reaches its summit 00:34:28.12\00:34:30.79 and when the sun actually sets. 00:34:30.89\00:34:33.15 In other words, the Passover lamb was to be sacrificed 00:34:33.35\00:34:36.22 exactly between the two evenings. 00:34:36.32\00:34:40.15 And it's no coincidence that Jesus Christ died at 3 o'clock 00:34:40.35\00:34:45.69 in the afternoon between noon and 6 p. m. 00:34:45.79\00:34:49.65 when the sun set approximately. 00:34:50.65\00:34:53.84 Jesus on the cross the sixth day said: 00:34:55.41\00:34:59.58 "It is finished. " 00:34:59.78\00:35:02.66 Redemption had been won for the human race. 00:35:02.86\00:35:06.20 Now let's get our chronology straight. 00:35:06.40\00:35:09.12 Go with me to Luke 23 beginning with verse 54. 00:35:09.32\00:35:12.97 I want this to be absolutely clear... 00:35:13.17\00:35:15.05 especially for those who are watching on television 00:35:15.25\00:35:17.87 because I think most Adventists have the chronology of the death 00:35:17.97\00:35:21.86 of Jesus and His burial and resurrection straight. 00:35:21.96\00:35:24.66 Luke 23 and beginning at verse 54: 00:35:24.86\00:35:28.21 It says there: 00:35:28.24\00:35:30.59 What day did Jesus die? 00:35:36.30\00:35:37.96 It was Friday. It was the day of preparation, 00:35:37.99\00:35:40.46 the Sabbath drew near. 00:35:40.57\00:35:41.78 Which means that the Sabbath had not what? 00:35:41.88\00:35:44.15 Started. So, Jesus died on the day that we know of as Friday. 00:35:44.25\00:35:49.29 Verse 55: 00:35:49.32\00:35:51.32 So Jesus is placed in the tomb 00:36:01.56\00:36:04.91 sometime between 3 o'clock 00:36:05.01\00:36:06.53 and sunset. 00:36:06.63\00:36:08.01 What day was Jesus in the tomb? 00:36:25.98\00:36:27.97 On Sabbath. 00:36:28.27\00:36:29.93 What did the women outside the tomb do? 00:36:30.14\00:36:32.17 They rested. 00:36:32.37\00:36:33.66 How do you think their rest was like? 00:36:34.36\00:36:36.09 Not very restful. 00:36:36.49\00:36:39.55 Oh, our Master has died. 00:36:40.65\00:36:43.36 We thought He was going to redeem Israel. 00:36:43.56\00:36:45.69 Now He's dead. It was a day of sorrow. 00:36:45.89\00:36:48.42 A day of suffering 00:36:49.41\00:36:51.75 thinking about the Master in the tomb. 00:36:51.95\00:36:53.78 Let me ask you. If they had paid any attention to Jesus 00:36:53.98\00:36:58.05 and what He had told them, would that have been a day 00:36:58.25\00:37:00.64 of joyous expectation? 00:37:00.74\00:37:02.18 Yes! Jesus had told them repeatedly that He was going to 00:37:02.39\00:37:05.50 go to Jerusalem; He was going to be mistreated. 00:37:05.61\00:37:07.64 He was going to be buried, 00:37:07.74\00:37:08.77 and He was going to RISE on the third day. 00:37:08.88\00:37:10.76 If they had listened to what Jesus had to say, 00:37:10.96\00:37:12.99 that Sabbath wouldn't have been a day of sorrow. 00:37:13.19\00:37:15.32 They would have said... When Jesus said "It is finished" 00:37:15.42\00:37:17.56 on the cross and when He was buried, 00:37:17.66\00:37:19.16 they would have said... "Oh, it is finished; our redemption 00:37:19.26\00:37:22.07 has been won! " Amen. Hallelujah! 00:37:22.17\00:37:25.08 "The Creator has now redeemed us. " 00:37:25.28\00:37:27.79 That's the way that Jesus wanted them to look at the Sabbath. 00:37:27.99\00:37:33.37 By the way, Christians many times use psychological 00:37:33.57\00:37:36.29 arguments. You know they say: "Well, you know Sabbath was a 00:37:36.39\00:37:40.38 sad day but Sunday was a happy day. " 00:37:40.48\00:37:43.18 Because on Sabbath they were crying; on Sunday they were 00:37:44.65\00:37:46.92 all happy because Jesus resurrected. 00:37:47.02\00:37:49.15 The problem with that idea is that on the evening of the 00:37:49.35\00:37:53.06 resurrection, on Sunday night, the Bible says that they 00:37:53.16\00:37:55.53 didn't even believe that He had resurrected. 00:37:55.64\00:37:57.56 So how could they be filled with joy all day Sunday 00:37:57.86\00:38:01.42 if they didn't even believe that Jesus had resurrected yet? 00:38:01.52\00:38:04.22 Be careful with psychological arguments! 00:38:04.42\00:38:06.53 We need to go by what scripture says. 00:38:06.73\00:38:09.67 That day should have been a day of joy and happiness 00:38:09.87\00:38:12.95 and peace for them because Jesus resting in the tomb 00:38:13.05\00:38:16.92 indicated that their redemption had been won. 00:38:17.03\00:38:20.98 You know, most Christians believe that Jesus resurrected 00:38:23.96\00:38:28.87 on Sunday because Sunday is a very important day. 00:38:28.97\00:38:34.15 Jesus wanted to indicate that we are supposed to celebrate 00:38:34.35\00:38:36.64 Sunday in honor of the resurrection. 00:38:36.74\00:38:38.61 But you know, as we look at the manna episode, we discover 00:38:39.61\00:38:42.27 that it was not Sunday that was important 00:38:42.37\00:38:44.79 but the Sabbath. Amen. 00:38:44.89\00:38:46.68 Are you understanding what I'm saying? 00:38:48.09\00:38:49.56 It was the day BEFORE Sunday that was important. 00:38:49.76\00:38:53.18 Isn't it interesting that during Holy Week or what we call Easter 00:38:53.38\00:38:57.57 everybody talks about, you know, 00:38:57.67\00:39:00.72 Ash Wednesday. 00:39:00.92\00:39:02.88 And in the Hispanic countries Thursday is a real sacred day: 00:39:04.18\00:39:07.47 Hueves Santo. 00:39:07.57\00:39:08.74 And Good Friday, and Resurrection Sunday. 00:39:08.94\00:39:13.75 And who says anything about the Sabbath? 00:39:13.95\00:39:16.00 During Holy Week the Sabbath disappears. 00:39:16.20\00:39:19.81 Every other day of Holy Week is important 00:39:19.91\00:39:23.22 but nobody mentions anything about the Sabbath 00:39:23.32\00:39:25.79 because the devil has wanted to hide the Sabbath... 00:39:25.99\00:39:28.78 WHICH IS THE MOST IMPORTANT DAY. 00:39:28.98\00:39:31.03 You see folks, the reason why 00:39:35.50\00:39:38.97 Jesus resurrected on Sunday 00:39:39.07\00:39:41.83 is because the Bible teaches that, as the Redeemer, 00:39:41.93\00:39:45.42 who was also the Creator, He had to rest in the tomb 00:39:45.62\00:39:50.96 on Sabbath. 00:39:51.16\00:39:53.18 So it's the Sabbath that is important; 00:39:53.38\00:39:55.83 it's not Sunday which is important. 00:39:56.03\00:39:57.91 Now let's go back to the manna 00:39:58.82\00:40:00.77 and pursue this a little further. 00:40:00.87\00:40:02.90 Let's read John 6 verse 51 again. 00:40:03.10\00:40:06.04 John chapter 6 and verse 51: 00:40:06.24\00:40:08.54 I want to review this point 00:40:08.74\00:40:10.60 because it's very important. 00:40:10.70\00:40:11.93 Jesus says: 00:40:12.13\00:40:14.11 "And the bread that I shall give is" - what? 00:40:22.56\00:40:26.42 Don't forget that! 00:40:26.62\00:40:28.43 "is My flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world. " 00:40:28.63\00:40:33.13 The manna represented the flesh of Jesus. 00:40:33.33\00:40:36.89 Now let me ask you this. 00:40:37.93\00:40:40.26 Jesus died on Friday. 00:40:40.46\00:40:45.07 What condition was the body in of Jesus on Sabbath? 00:40:45.27\00:40:49.47 What would have happened with a normal body? 00:40:49.67\00:40:51.90 Decay. It would have begun the process of what? 00:40:52.10\00:40:55.30 Decomposition. 00:40:55.50\00:40:57.44 How about the body of Jesus? 00:40:58.75\00:41:00.27 Did the body of Jesus see any decomposition on Sabbath? 00:41:00.67\00:41:06.23 No. Why? Because He was the living manna. 00:41:06.43\00:41:11.39 You say now are you sure about this? 00:41:14.21\00:41:15.83 You know I wouldn't say it unless I was sure! 00:41:17.03\00:41:19.08 Go with me to another Messianic prophecy. 00:41:19.48\00:41:23.85 Psalm 16, verses 8 through 10. 00:41:24.05\00:41:27.80 Psalm 16, verses 8 through 10. 00:41:28.00\00:41:30.12 This is a prophecy where David is speaking about Jesus. 00:41:31.49\00:41:34.81 We are going to notice that in a few moments. 00:41:35.01\00:41:36.57 Here it says: 00:41:36.77\00:41:40.00 Now notice this: 00:41:54.86\00:41:55.90 Excuse me? 00:42:01.78\00:42:03.81 My what? 00:42:04.02\00:42:06.59 Flesh will what? 00:42:06.62\00:42:08.32 "Rest in hope. " 00:42:08.52\00:42:10.74 So what was going to happen with the flesh? 00:42:10.94\00:42:13.41 It was going to what? Rest in hope. 00:42:13.51\00:42:16.52 By the way, while Jesus was resting inside the women 00:42:16.62\00:42:19.58 were resting outside. 00:42:19.69\00:42:20.99 Because they kept the Sabbath according to the commandment. 00:42:21.19\00:42:24.85 And they didn't know it at that point but they should have known 00:42:25.06\00:42:28.19 that they were keeping it in honor of what Jesus had done 00:42:28.30\00:42:31.31 as the Redeemer. 00:42:31.42\00:42:32.92 Just like Jesus at Creation week said "It is finished, " 00:42:33.12\00:42:37.67 and rested on the seventh day from His works of Creation. 00:42:37.77\00:42:40.46 Now He says on the cross, "It is finished, " 00:42:40.66\00:42:42.51 and He rests from His work of redemption on the seventh day 00:42:42.72\00:42:46.12 as what else? If they had only understood, 00:42:46.22\00:42:48.84 they would have said: "Our Creator has redeemed us! " 00:42:49.04\00:42:51.01 Then the Sabbath now not only becomes a sign of Creation, 00:42:51.21\00:42:54.28 it becomes a sign of redemption. 00:42:54.31\00:42:56.02 Not one reason for keeping the Sabbath... TWO! 00:42:56.22\00:42:59.42 Notice what it continues to say: 00:43:02.62\00:43:04.79 I like the way it says it in the NIV. 00:43:13.46\00:43:15.32 By the way, the NIV is a better translation when it comes to 00:43:15.42\00:43:17.57 the state of the dead for Adventists. 00:43:17.67\00:43:19.57 I'm not going to get into Bible versions here. 00:43:19.77\00:43:22.23 People... some people say King James only. 00:43:22.33\00:43:24.37 I believe the King James Version is a very good version 00:43:24.67\00:43:28.09 I believe in the Textus Receptus but that doesn't mean that 00:43:28.29\00:43:30.83 the King James translators always translated correctly. 00:43:30.93\00:43:33.61 Are you with me? 00:43:34.78\00:43:36.08 I believe the Greek manuscripts are the best, 00:43:36.29\00:43:38.88 but I don't believe necessarily 00:43:39.08\00:43:41.36 that the translation is the best. 00:43:41.46\00:43:44.14 On the state of the dead the NIV is far better. 00:43:45.20\00:43:47.57 Do you know what the NIV says? 00:43:47.77\00:43:49.73 The King James says: "You will not leave my soul in sheol" 00:43:49.93\00:43:52.93 The New King James, "nor will you allow your Holy One 00:43:53.13\00:43:56.14 to see corruption. " 00:43:56.24\00:43:57.25 The NIV says: "You will not leave Me... " 00:43:57.45\00:44:02.56 because my soul is me... 00:44:02.76\00:44:04.73 "You will not leave Me in the grave 00:44:04.93\00:44:08.41 nor will You allow Your Holy One to see decay. " 00:44:08.61\00:44:14.01 Is that a good translation? 00:44:16.02\00:44:17.49 That is an excellent translation. 00:44:17.69\00:44:19.42 Now you say, what did this prophecy point to? 00:44:19.62\00:44:22.37 Well, let's go to the New Testament where Peter 00:44:22.67\00:44:25.60 on the Day of Pentecost quotes this passage. 00:44:25.70\00:44:28.32 Go with me to Acts chapter 2 and verse 25 through 27 00:44:28.52\00:44:33.84 and then we'll go down to verse 31. 00:44:33.94\00:44:35.65 Acts chapter 2 verse 25 00:44:35.85\00:44:38.19 through 27 and then verse 31. 00:44:38.39\00:44:41.94 Who was David talking about when he uttered these words 00:44:42.14\00:44:45.44 in Psalm 16? 00:44:45.54\00:44:46.61 Listen to this! 00:44:46.82\00:44:48.42 So much for the idea that Jesus is not in the Old Testament. 00:44:52.23\00:44:56.06 Is this the same passage from Psalm 16? 00:45:16.29\00:45:18.61 Yes! 00:45:18.91\00:45:20.09 Why did the body of Jesus not see decay? 00:45:32.87\00:45:34.97 Because as the manna in the Old Testament did not corrupt 00:45:36.69\00:45:40.39 on the Sabbath, Jesus - the living manna - 00:45:40.49\00:45:45.25 His flesh saw no corruption on the Sabbath. Amen. 00:45:45.35\00:45:48.38 Beautiful Messianic prophecy. 00:45:48.58\00:45:50.77 By the way, there are those among us who say 00:45:50.97\00:45:52.81 you are changing the days when Jesus died and resurrected. 00:45:52.91\00:45:56.30 You have Adventists that are saying that the 3 days and 00:45:56.50\00:46:00.15 3 nights that are mentioned in Matthew chapter 12 00:46:00.25\00:46:02.30 begin on a Tuesday night 00:46:02.41\00:46:04.42 when Judas made the agreement to betray Jesus 00:46:04.62\00:46:08.92 to the Jewish leaders and she says, this person says, 00:46:09.06\00:46:12.05 that Jesus resurrected immediately after sundown 00:46:12.15\00:46:16.04 on Friday night... what we call Friday night. 00:46:16.14\00:46:18.60 There are Adventists who are saying no... You know, Jesus - 00:46:18.80\00:46:22.36 kind of like the World Wide Church of God used to teach - 00:46:22.46\00:46:24.94 Jesus was crucified on Wednesday and He resurrected on Sabbath. 00:46:25.04\00:46:28.66 None of these scenarios can be! 00:46:28.86\00:46:30.47 Because the prophecy indicates that the body of Jesus 00:46:30.67\00:46:34.37 had to be in the grave the whole day. And even though He was dead 00:46:34.47\00:46:39.37 His body would not see corruption. Amen! 00:46:39.47\00:46:42.97 Go with me to verse 31. 00:46:44.73\00:46:47.12 Notice why David said these words from the Old Testament. 00:46:50.11\00:46:52.87 and the NIV translates body but it's the same great word 00:47:05.13\00:47:08.86 psyche. It should be translated flesh not body. 00:47:08.96\00:47:11.72 It's not soma, it's psyche. The same word that Jesus used 00:47:11.82\00:47:14.92 when He says that the manna is the flesh. 00:47:15.02\00:47:17.37 So it should be translated "that He was not abandoned 00:47:17.57\00:47:20.98 to the grave nor did His flesh see decay. " 00:47:21.08\00:47:25.63 Let me ask you: what kind of bread spoils faster, 00:47:26.64\00:47:29.15 leavened or unleavened? 00:47:29.35\00:47:30.50 You know that leavened bread spoils a lot faster 00:47:32.08\00:47:34.97 than unleavened bread. 00:47:35.00\00:47:35.99 Do you know something interesting? 00:47:36.19\00:47:38.09 The Lord Jesus was crucified on the 14th of Nissan. 00:47:39.22\00:47:43.53 It has nothing to do with an automobile. 00:47:43.73\00:47:46.35 He was crucified on the 14th of Nissan. That was the Passover. 00:47:49.26\00:47:52.15 The next day after the Passover according to Leviticus 23 00:47:53.21\00:47:57.21 was the beginning of the Feast of Unleavened Bread. 00:47:57.41\00:48:00.67 Do you know the real reason why the body of Jesus did not see 00:48:03.37\00:48:05.66 corruption? Because His body did not have sin. 00:48:05.76\00:48:09.18 Because leaven represents what? 00:48:09.48\00:48:13.22 Leaven represents sin. 00:48:13.42\00:48:15.78 That's correct. 00:48:15.98\00:48:17.06 And so you not only have the manna episode which points 00:48:17.26\00:48:21.22 to the fact that the body of Jesus would see no corruption 00:48:21.32\00:48:23.81 but you have the beginning of the Feast of Unleavened Bread 00:48:23.91\00:48:26.38 that indicates that His body would have no leaven 00:48:26.48\00:48:29.20 and therefore His body would see no corruption. 00:48:29.30\00:48:32.61 Now of course we know that we don't assimilate 00:48:38.36\00:48:44.31 Jesus Christ by eating His flesh. 00:48:44.51\00:48:46.59 By the way, do you know when the shewbread was changed in 00:48:48.13\00:48:51.34 the sanctuary? 00:48:51.44\00:48:53.07 Every Sabbath you had fresh bread! 00:48:53.48\00:48:56.54 The priests... when is it that we go to church 00:48:58.35\00:49:00.58 to get fresh bread? 00:49:00.68\00:49:02.07 Not on Sunday! 00:49:02.57\00:49:05.03 The shewbread was changed on the Sabbath, and they were 00:49:05.24\00:49:08.81 unleavened cakes. 00:49:08.91\00:49:10.60 All of these things pointed to Jesus. 00:49:12.04\00:49:15.47 That He was going to be in the tomb after He said 00:49:15.77\00:49:18.60 "It is finished. " 00:49:18.70\00:49:20.01 And Jesus wanted us, every Sabbath after that, 00:49:20.21\00:49:25.29 to celebrate the Sabbath. Not only because Jesus created 00:49:25.49\00:49:28.80 us at the beginning but because He redeemed us on the cross. 00:49:28.90\00:49:31.85 By the way, the Sabbath also has a prophetic dimension. 00:49:35.51\00:49:39.01 What? 00:49:40.09\00:49:42.65 Yeah, actually we have three reasons to keep the Sabbath. 00:49:44.02\00:49:47.02 Now, wait! 00:49:47.23\00:49:48.94 OK, I understand Creation. 00:49:49.24\00:49:51.06 Jesus finished the 6th day, rested the 7th day. 00:49:51.26\00:49:55.32 OK I understand redemption. 00:49:55.35\00:49:56.57 Jesus the 6th day said: "It is finished. " 00:49:56.77\00:49:58.82 His body was in the grave all day Sabbath and didn't see decay 00:49:58.92\00:50:02.69 but you say there's a prophetic dimension to the Sabbath? 00:50:02.72\00:50:05.45 Absolutely. 00:50:05.65\00:50:06.95 Go with me to Isaiah 66. 00:50:08.58\00:50:10.35 Isaiah chapter 66 00:50:12.90\00:50:15.87 verses 22 and 23. 00:50:16.07\00:50:18.90 A favorite passage of Adventists 00:50:19.30\00:50:22.70 and it should be of all Christians! 00:50:22.90\00:50:26.28 It says in verse 22: 00:50:27.82\00:50:29.22 "For as the new heavens and the new earth" - same expression 00:50:29.25\00:50:32.35 as in Revelation - "which I will make 00:50:32.45\00:50:36.17 shall remain before me says the Lord, 00:50:36.27\00:50:37.80 so shall your descendants and your name remain. 00:50:38.00\00:50:40.36 And it shall come to pass that from one new moon to another" 00:50:40.39\00:50:43.81 By the way, a proper translation would be from one month 00:50:44.01\00:50:47.28 to another because the month is marked by the new moon. 00:50:47.38\00:50:51.80 The beginning of the month. In fact, the Spanish version 00:50:52.00\00:50:54.53 says the mes en mes... 00:50:54.63\00:50:56.98 from month to month. 00:50:57.02\00:50:58.37 Why are we going to go there from month to month? 00:50:58.47\00:51:00.06 Because there's a certain tree that produces its fruit 00:51:01.84\00:51:04.19 every month, and we have to eat from it. 00:51:04.29\00:51:08.03 And so it says: "And it shall come to pass that 00:51:09.21\00:51:13.50 from one new moon to another and from one Sunday to another" 00:51:13.60\00:51:17.47 You're still awake out there! 00:51:19.80\00:51:21.59 Praise the Lord! Good! I like Adventists who protest! 00:51:21.79\00:51:25.27 That means they are reading their Bibles. 00:51:25.47\00:51:26.75 "And from one Sabbath to another shall all the Jews come 00:51:27.94\00:51:32.18 to worship before Me says the Lord. " 00:51:32.28\00:51:33.88 Who? 00:51:40.03\00:51:41.75 All flesh. Are you made of flesh? 00:51:41.95\00:51:44.30 Yes. Well this includes you then! 00:51:44.50\00:51:46.63 And it includes me! 00:51:47.04\00:51:48.97 By the way, Isaiah is called the universal prophet 00:51:50.24\00:51:53.72 because his writings embrace the world. 00:51:53.92\00:51:58.92 "My house shall be called a house of prayer for the Jews. " 00:52:00.14\00:52:03.50 No! For all nations! 00:52:04.89\00:52:07.95 So God says: "And it shall come from one new moon to another 00:52:10.16\00:52:14.36 and from one Sabbath to another all flesh shall come to worship 00:52:14.46\00:52:17.77 before Me says the Lord. " 00:52:17.87\00:52:19.19 What will we go there for? To keep the Sabbath. 00:52:19.39\00:52:22.27 That's because verse 22 says that He will have made 00:52:22.47\00:52:25.73 a new what? 00:52:25.83\00:52:26.99 "A new heavens and a new earth. " 00:52:27.19\00:52:29.16 So in other words, the Sabbath will be kept because Jesus has 00:52:30.62\00:52:33.92 now made a new heavens and a new earth! 00:52:34.02\00:52:36.28 So in other words, as we keep the Sabbath we're commemorating 00:52:36.48\00:52:40.58 Creation, yes. We're commemorating redemption, 00:52:40.68\00:52:43.41 but we're also looking forward to the time when we will spend 00:52:43.51\00:52:47.30 eternity with Jesus and we'll go every Sabbath to remember 00:52:47.40\00:52:51.33 the creation of the new heaven and the new earth. 00:52:51.43\00:52:54.07 Amen. 00:52:54.27\00:52:55.43 And people say that there's no reason to keep the Sabbath. 00:52:55.63\00:52:58.76 In my Bible I find three reasons to keep the Sabbath. 00:52:58.96\00:53:03.09 Creation, redemption, and the final restoration. 00:53:04.38\00:53:10.37 Is the Sabbath a beautiful experience? 00:53:12.48\00:53:15.13 Now my question is: how many of us even stop to think about 00:53:16.69\00:53:20.15 the Sabbath in these terms? 00:53:20.35\00:53:21.66 Isn't it true that what we do is we get up on Sabbath morning 00:53:23.91\00:53:26.19 later than usual? 00:53:26.29\00:53:29.07 Kind of catch a little breakfast. 00:53:31.42\00:53:33.32 Comb our hair; get dressed. 00:53:33.52\00:53:36.18 Arrive late to Sabbath School. 00:53:36.38\00:53:38.52 I speak from the experience of my church... 00:53:40.15\00:53:42.60 many of whom are watching. 00:53:42.80\00:53:46.20 So they can take this as a rebuke! 00:53:48.95\00:53:51.29 On world-wide television! 00:53:53.31\00:53:55.66 So we get to church late... 00:54:01.64\00:54:03.38 and kind of, you know... During Sabbath School we're 00:54:04.89\00:54:08.66 still awake but when the sermon times comes... 00:54:08.76\00:54:12.42 we're kind of going to sleep 00:54:15.05\00:54:16.92 because the sermon is boring. 00:54:18.37\00:54:20.22 Do you know why it's boring? 00:54:20.32\00:54:21.56 Because of what we have trained our minds to watch. 00:54:21.76\00:54:24.16 Amen. 00:54:24.37\00:54:25.92 Is this stuff exciting? 00:54:26.02\00:54:27.66 Whoo! I'll tell you. I sit down and start watching 00:54:27.77\00:54:30.34 television I'm asleep in two minutes. 00:54:30.44\00:54:32.10 But I can sit for hours and study God's Word. 00:54:32.60\00:54:36.35 Amen. Because it's how we educate our taste. 00:54:36.55\00:54:39.81 If you educate your taste to love junk, you will love junk. 00:54:41.01\00:54:45.22 If you educate your taste to love God's Word, 00:54:45.42\00:54:49.05 you will love God's Word. 00:54:49.25\00:54:50.38 It's a matter of discipline and education. 00:54:50.59\00:54:53.16 Amen. And using your will power. 00:54:53.36\00:54:55.60 You know I had a period in my life where I went astray 00:54:55.70\00:54:57.98 from the Lord, and I kept on coming... 00:54:58.08\00:55:00.48 You know, I should read the Bible because my parents... 00:55:00.58\00:55:02.29 you know, they taught me to read the Bible. 00:55:02.39\00:55:04.34 And I'd start at Genesis 1, get half-way through the chapter... 00:55:04.44\00:55:07.17 Boring. 00:55:07.27\00:55:08.42 Till finally one day I said "I'm going to sit down. 00:55:10.35\00:55:12.97 I'm going to read Genesis. I'm going to read the Bible. 00:55:13.07\00:55:14.61 If it kills me, I'm going to like it. " 00:55:14.81\00:55:16.62 And I stuck with it. 00:55:17.32\00:55:19.29 And I decided I would change my career from being a 00:55:20.49\00:55:22.68 physical education teacher to a preacher. 00:55:22.78\00:55:24.85 I would have made a mediocre physical education teacher, 00:55:27.16\00:55:29.98 and probably many people would think that I'm a mediocre 00:55:30.18\00:55:33.02 preacher, too. 00:55:33.12\00:55:34.75 Everybody is entitled to their opinion. 00:55:35.15\00:55:37.78 And then what do you do on Sabbath afternoon? 00:55:40.53\00:55:43.89 Oh, we go home and say "Sabbath is a day to rest. " 00:55:45.28\00:55:49.30 And so we go home and in the afternoon we sleep. 00:55:52.09\00:55:55.33 And then, you know, we always look in the bulletin to see when 00:55:55.53\00:55:58.17 sundown is 00:55:58.27\00:56:00.81 because we want to get on with our Saturday-night activities. 00:56:01.01\00:56:03.67 And you know the moment it comes we are about our Saturday-night 00:56:04.94\00:56:07.94 activities, and how many times during the Sabbath did we ever 00:56:08.04\00:56:11.66 think about what the Sabbath means? 00:56:11.76\00:56:13.60 All we're doing is fulfilling the forms of Sabbath observance 00:56:16.51\00:56:20.45 like I mentioned in my sermon yesterday morning. 00:56:20.65\00:56:23.27 Folks, we need to make a focused 00:56:24.57\00:56:27.27 intentional study 00:56:27.47\00:56:32.86 and practice of the Sabbath. 00:56:33.06\00:56:36.29 We have to think about what it means. 00:56:36.49\00:56:39.96 Why we do it. 00:56:40.06\00:56:42.66 We need to think about the Creator, about the Redeemer. 00:56:42.87\00:56:46.79 Our minds should be focused on what's going to take place 00:56:46.89\00:56:49.66 when Jesus comes and takes us to heaven for 1,000 years 00:56:49.76\00:56:52.68 and then re-creates a new heavens and a new earth. 00:56:52.79\00:56:55.96 And we'll be able to live eternally with Him. 00:56:56.17\00:56:58.87 That is the original intent and purpose of the Sabbath. 00:56:59.17\00:57:02.66 But so many times we just keep the Sabbath by rote, 00:57:02.86\00:57:06.55 as a form or as a ritual. 00:57:08.18\00:57:11.65 God wants there to be a great Sabbath reform among Adventists. 00:57:12.05\00:57:16.73 And speaking to those who are viewing on television 00:57:18.10\00:57:21.52 who are not Seventh-day Adventists, 00:57:21.63\00:57:23.15 God is inviting you to have a Sabbath reform in your life 00:57:23.35\00:57:28.81 by keeping the right day. 00:57:29.01\00:57:33.10 Because you cannot keep Sunday as a day of rest 00:57:33.30\00:57:36.10 when Jesus rested in the tomb on Sabbath. 00:57:36.30\00:57:38.44 You cannot keep Sunday as a day of rest when Jesus rested 00:57:39.60\00:57:43.13 from Creation on the Sabbath. 00:57:43.16\00:57:44.78 You cannot keep the 1st day as the day of rest 00:57:44.98\00:57:47.39 when we're expecting to keep the holy 7th day Sabbath 00:57:47.59\00:57:51.47 in the earth made new. 00:57:51.67\00:57:52.74 We must rest when Jesus rests, 00:57:53.83\00:57:56.22 and He rested on the holy Sabbath. 00:57:56.42\00:57:58.48 And I pray to God that those who are watching this program 00:57:58.69\00:58:01.38 on television, as you are convicted by the Holy Spirit, 00:58:01.48\00:58:04.31 you will seek out a church, that you will seek out 00:58:04.41\00:58:06.61 some place where the Sabbath is being kept, 00:58:06.71\00:58:09.55 hopefully a Seventh-day Adventist church 00:58:09.65\00:58:11.28 because there are so many other truths that the 00:58:11.38\00:58:14.30 Seventh-day Adventist church preaches that have been 00:58:14.40\00:58:16.85 forgotten and buried by the Christian world. 00:58:16.95\00:58:19.77 I pray to God that that will be your experience 00:58:20.87\00:58:23.50 out there as you are watching on television and that as 00:58:23.60\00:58:26.41 Adventists we will have a new Sabbath-keeping experience 00:58:26.54\00:58:30.14 in our lives. 00:58:30.24\00:58:32.27
