From the 3ABN Worship Center 00:00:58.79\00:01:00.65 it's the Ten Commandments Weekend 2008: 00:01:00.69\00:01:03.84 The Constitution of Grace. 00:01:04.04\00:01:06.56 Good morning and happy Sabbath! 00:01:10.04\00:01:12.42 All of you sound good and you look beautiful. 00:01:13.66\00:01:16.34 It's good to be here 00:01:16.54\00:01:17.54 on the Sabbath day. Welcome to Part #2 00:01:17.64\00:01:20.71 of our Ten Commandments Weekend. 00:01:20.81\00:01:23.09 And we have much to be thankful for. 00:01:23.40\00:01:25.48 First, there was a storm predicted to come through here 00:01:25.68\00:01:28.96 last night, and the storm came - but it didn't come through HERE. 00:01:29.06\00:01:33.19 And we can praise the Lord for that. 00:01:33.39\00:01:35.18 The hard weather went to the north and a little to the south 00:01:35.38\00:01:38.38 but it didn't come nigh our dwelling. 00:01:38.58\00:01:40.94 And we can thank the Lord for that. 00:01:41.14\00:01:42.40 And second we are very, very thankful that Shelley Quinn 00:01:42.60\00:01:45.96 has been resurrected, dare I say, from her sick bed. 00:01:46.06\00:01:49.18 We've prayed her through, 00:01:50.30\00:01:52.01 and she is ready and raring to go. 00:01:55.91\00:01:58.88 Now this is a woman who is a talker. 00:01:58.98\00:02:01.01 She speaks in public and does a fine job. 00:02:01.04\00:02:03.98 And she hasn't spoken a word in public for well over 10 days, 00:02:04.18\00:02:08.15 so she's got a lot to say. 00:02:08.35\00:02:10.72 And it's all good; it's all from the Word of God. 00:02:12.50\00:02:15.80 So it's good to be here. It's a good day; 00:02:16.00\00:02:18.26 it's a beautiful day. Let's bow our heads in prayer. 00:02:18.36\00:02:20.60 Father, we thank You so very much for the Sabbath. 00:02:20.80\00:02:24.71 We thank You for the Commandments that include 00:02:24.91\00:02:27.57 this very special day, the Sabbath. 00:02:27.67\00:02:30.70 We thank You for the rest that it affords us. 00:02:30.90\00:02:33.44 We thank You for the opportunity to sit with You, 00:02:33.64\00:02:36.68 turn off the cares of the world, and turn our minds and 00:02:36.78\00:02:41.15 our hearts towards Jesus. We ask, Lord, that You would be 00:02:41.25\00:02:45.99 with the speaker. You have brought her here 00:02:46.09\00:02:50.00 and You have given her words for us to hear. 00:02:50.11\00:02:53.49 Give us open and receptive hearts. 00:02:53.69\00:02:56.14 Bless all that shall be said and done during the course of this 00:02:56.34\00:02:59.39 very special day. We love You, we praise You, 00:02:59.49\00:03:03.14 we thank You. In Jesus' name, Amen. 00:03:03.24\00:03:06.91 Just a couple of years ago we were doing a broadcast 00:03:07.59\00:03:10.35 from Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. 00:03:10.45\00:03:12.80 Reuben Carr, you know that name, invited us to his church there. 00:03:13.01\00:03:16.82 And at that church we met Nadean Edwards and her husband 00:03:17.02\00:03:20.46 and fell in love with her right off. Her Christian spirit, 00:03:20.56\00:03:24.04 her love for the Lord, and the talent God has given her 00:03:24.14\00:03:26.60 to sing. And so we call upon Nadean now to minister to us 00:03:26.70\00:03:30.27 in song: 'Tis So Sweet To Trust In Jesus. 00:03:30.37\00:03:34.96 'Tis to sweet 00:03:49.91\00:03:55.11 to trust in Jesus. 00:03:55.91\00:04:01.83 Just to take 00:04:02.63\00:04:07.37 Him at His word. 00:04:07.57\00:04:12.61 Just to rest 00:04:13.37\00:04:18.01 upon His promise, 00:04:18.31\00:04:24.11 Just to know 00:04:24.41\00:04:28.72 thus saith the Lord. 00:04:29.02\00:04:34.08 O, 'tis to sweet 00:04:34.28\00:04:38.82 to trust in my Jesus. 00:04:39.12\00:04:44.46 Just to take 00:04:45.49\00:04:49.11 Him at His word. 00:04:49.41\00:04:53.40 O, just to rest 00:04:53.60\00:04:58.39 upon my God's promise. 00:04:58.59\00:05:03.97 Just to know 00:05:04.87\00:05:08.58 thus saith the Lord. 00:05:08.88\00:05:14.47 Jesus, Jesus, 00:05:14.78\00:05:19.36 how I trust Him. 00:05:19.76\00:05:24.52 How I've proved 00:05:24.82\00:05:29.10 Him o'er and o'er. 00:05:29.40\00:05:33.90 Jesus, Jesus, 00:05:34.20\00:05:38.79 precious Jesus. 00:05:39.09\00:05:43.43 O for grace 00:05:43.53\00:05:47.77 to trust Him more. 00:05:48.17\00:05:54.12 Oh, I'm so glad 00:05:54.52\00:06:00.27 I've learned to trust Him. 00:06:00.57\00:06:06.06 Precious Jesus, 00:06:07.24\00:06:10.05 my Savior - oh - and my Friend. 00:06:10.35\00:06:15.69 And I know - oh, I know, I know, I know 00:06:15.99\00:06:19.74 that He is with me; 00:06:20.04\00:06:23.98 And He'll be with me 00:06:24.28\00:06:27.32 yes, He'll be with me 00:06:27.62\00:06:29.47 to the end. 00:06:29.67\00:06:32.04 Oh, Jesus 00:06:32.44\00:06:35.92 my Jesus, oh, precious, precious Jesus. 00:06:36.02\00:06:41.96 Hallelujah, hallelujah, 00:06:44.02\00:06:46.72 praise to my Jesus. 00:06:46.82\00:06:48.64 Oh, 00:06:49.04\00:06:51.85 I'm so glad I learned to trust You, Lord, 00:06:52.06\00:06:56.48 my precious Jesus, 00:06:56.69\00:07:00.34 O for grace 00:07:01.09\00:07:04.88 to trust Him more. 00:07:05.08\00:07:10.02 Oh, Jesus, Jesus, 00:07:10.95\00:07:16.71 how I trust You. 00:07:16.91\00:07:20.91 How I've proved You 00:07:21.11\00:07:25.37 over and over again. 00:07:25.58\00:07:29.50 Jesus, Jesus, 00:07:29.80\00:07:33.55 my precious Jesus. 00:07:34.62\00:07:38.29 Thank You for the grace 00:07:41.01\00:07:43.51 thank You for the grace 00:07:43.82\00:07:47.53 thank You for Your grace, Lord, 00:07:47.83\00:07:52.08 to trust You 00:07:52.28\00:07:56.51 more. 00:07:56.71\00:08:02.62 There are any number of words and adjectives we could use 00:08:09.07\00:08:11.66 to describe Shelley Quinn. 00:08:11.84\00:08:13.98 Teacher, preacher, author, tall Texan... 00:08:14.28\00:08:20.09 and they all apply. 00:08:20.39\00:08:22.81 But I think the best thing that can be said about anyone 00:08:23.11\00:08:26.63 who is a child of God is that they are in love with the Lord 00:08:26.83\00:08:31.13 and that the Lord loves them 00:08:31.33\00:08:33.88 and that they are used of God. 00:08:34.08\00:08:36.89 Shelley is indeed a student of the Word, 00:08:37.09\00:08:39.37 and when she speaks she comes from an experience with God. 00:08:39.57\00:08:45.06 And so I ask from you, for her, 00:08:45.26\00:08:47.98 your prayerful and undivided attention. 00:08:48.18\00:08:50.60 Sister Shelley Quinn. 00:08:50.80\00:08:52.19 Thank you, C.A. 00:08:53.71\00:08:55.25 You know, when he said that I hadn't spoken in public 00:08:55.65\00:08:59.79 for the last 10 days... actually, I haven't spoken 00:08:59.89\00:09:02.87 hardly at all for the last 10 days. Not just because 00:09:02.97\00:09:06.15 my voice sounded like a bullfrog 00:09:06.35\00:09:09.85 but because I talk with my hands 00:09:10.05\00:09:12.90 and I was too weak to move my hands. 00:09:13.00\00:09:15.58 And, you know, I didn't realize how much I spoke with my hands 00:09:15.78\00:09:19.59 until recently. I was doing a revival series in Texas 00:09:19.69\00:09:22.89 and afterwards this little gentleman came up to me. 00:09:22.99\00:09:25.76 And he said: "Where did you learn to sign? 00:09:25.96\00:09:29.52 It's so beautiful! " 00:09:29.62\00:09:31.92 And I said: "I wasn't signing, I just talk with my hands. " 00:09:32.87\00:09:36.80 But I do want to thank you all so much for all of your prayers. 00:09:37.00\00:09:41.23 J.D. would come home every evening, the last few evenings 00:09:41.33\00:09:44.08 and say: "Honey, everybody's praying for you. " 00:09:44.18\00:09:47.38 So, thank you so much for your prayers. 00:09:47.58\00:09:50.04 Now, let's go to the Lord in prayer. 00:09:50.24\00:09:52.64 Heavenly Father, 00:09:52.84\00:09:54.61 we come to recognize You as a holy and righteous Father. 00:09:54.98\00:10:00.19 And Lord, we DO praise Your name. 00:10:00.39\00:10:03.69 We enter into Your gates with thanksgiving in our hearts. 00:10:03.89\00:10:06.86 We thank you for our Lord Jesus Christ. 00:10:06.89\00:10:09.91 We thank You for Your Holy Spirit and for Your Word. 00:10:10.11\00:10:13.27 Lord, we thank You for Your Constitution of Grace. 00:10:13.48\00:10:17.02 We come today to ask that You would send Your Holy Spirit 00:10:17.22\00:10:21.04 to be our teacher. Help us, Lord, 00:10:21.24\00:10:22.85 as we go through this Bible study. 00:10:22.95\00:10:24.67 Help us each and every one to recognize our great need 00:10:24.97\00:10:29.09 for our Savior. In Jesus' name, Amen. Amen. 00:10:29.19\00:10:33.02 You know, I am always amazed that the Lord uses me 00:10:33.32\00:10:37.79 to speak through me because I certainly don't feel worthy. 00:10:37.99\00:10:43.12 But all it is... God doesn't look for people 00:10:43.42\00:10:47.23 who have the talent, He looks for the people like Isaiah 00:10:47.43\00:10:51.72 who say: "Here I am, Lord, send me. " 00:10:51.82\00:10:54.32 So, it's a privilege to be taking part in this third annual 00:10:54.52\00:10:58.20 Ten Commandments Weekend. 00:10:58.30\00:10:59.94 And what we're talking about is God's eternal and infinite 00:11:00.14\00:11:05.24 love as outlined in His eternal, 00:11:05.34\00:11:09.64 infinite law of love: the Ten Commandments. 00:11:09.84\00:11:13.14 The first table - the first four Commandments - 00:11:13.34\00:11:16.46 have to do with our relationship with God. 00:11:16.66\00:11:20.33 With our responsibility toward God. 00:11:20.53\00:11:24.40 And this is how we learn to love the Lord our God with all 00:11:24.60\00:11:28.31 of our heart, soul, mind, and strength. 00:11:28.41\00:11:30.79 The second table - the last six of the Ten Commandments - 00:11:31.00\00:11:35.11 is about our responsibility toward mankind. 00:11:35.31\00:11:38.65 Toward... and what our relationship is to be 00:11:38.85\00:11:44.12 with mankind. This is how to love your neighbor as yourself. 00:11:44.22\00:11:47.47 So, when we think about the Ten Commandments, 00:11:48.21\00:11:50.44 was Mount Sinai the first time that God spoke these 00:11:50.54\00:11:53.14 Ten Commandments? No! But there are people who believe 00:11:53.24\00:11:56.53 that it's true that He never spoke them until He gave them 00:11:56.63\00:12:00.42 to them on Mount Sinai. 00:12:00.52\00:12:02.09 And if we do a review of the history of the generations 00:12:02.39\00:12:06.80 before they got to Mount Sinai, we see that all of the 00:12:06.90\00:12:10.21 Ten Commandments were in place. 00:12:10.31\00:12:11.44 In fact, the Bible says that God by nature 00:12:11.64\00:12:15.09 wrote these Commandments on the hearts of the people. 00:12:15.19\00:12:18.36 Listen to what He says in Romans 2 verses 13-15: 00:12:18.56\00:12:22.32 "For not the hearers of the law are just in the sight of God 00:12:22.53\00:12:26.17 but the doers of the law will be justified. 00:12:26.27\00:12:28.90 For when gentiles, who do not have the law, 00:12:29.10\00:12:32.77 by nature do things that are in the law, 00:12:32.87\00:12:36.74 these, although not having the law, are a law to themselves 00:12:36.94\00:12:40.84 who show the work of the law written in their hearts. 00:12:40.95\00:12:45.65 Their conscious... conscience... also bearing witness. " 00:12:45.85\00:12:49.44 I want to use someone... he's not an Adventist 00:12:49.64\00:12:54.08 but I want to use this source to prove to you 00:12:54.18\00:12:57.26 that Adventists aren't the only ones who believe that the 00:12:57.36\00:12:59.82 Ten Commandments were given by God well before Mount Sinai. 00:12:59.92\00:13:03.67 And this is Matthew Henry - who is one of the most famous 00:13:03.87\00:13:07.07 Bible commentators and expositors. For over 00:13:07.17\00:13:10.31 three hundred centuries his works have been probably 00:13:10.41\00:13:14.97 some of the best-sold works and you will find them in the 00:13:15.08\00:13:18.82 libraries of nearly every Protestant pastor. 00:13:18.92\00:13:22.79 And writing on the Ten Commandments, 00:13:22.99\00:13:25.06 here's what he said: First he said that God spoke 00:13:25.16\00:13:27.77 then audibly with "a great deal of dreadful pomp. " 00:13:27.87\00:13:33.47 It was almost a fearful thing to the people. 00:13:33.67\00:13:36.00 But then this is what Matthew Henry wrote: 00:13:36.21\00:13:38.78 "This law, given on Mount Sinai, 00:13:38.98\00:13:42.56 God had given to man before. 00:13:42.76\00:13:47.00 It was written in his heart by nature. 00:13:47.20\00:13:50.48 But sin had so defaced the writing that it was necessary 00:13:50.68\00:13:54.98 in this manner to revive the knowledge of it. 00:13:55.08\00:13:59.08 That's what God was doing was reviving the knowledge of it. 00:13:59.28\00:14:02.10 Please turn in your Bibles to Exodus chapter 20. 00:14:02.30\00:14:05.64 And what we are going to do right now is just revive our 00:14:05.84\00:14:08.44 knowledge of the Commandments that we looked at last night: 00:14:08.54\00:14:12.50 the first two Commandments, and then I'll be speaking on the 00:14:12.60\00:14:15.35 Third Commandment. 00:14:15.45\00:14:16.51 Exodus 20 and we begin with verse 1. 00:14:16.61\00:14:20.01 The Bible says: "And God spoke all these words saying " 00:14:20.21\00:14:25.74 Now let's stop there for a second. 00:14:25.95\00:14:27.99 We need to take note that what follows is the beginning 00:14:28.19\00:14:32.14 of the Ten Commandments 00:14:32.24\00:14:33.70 spoken by the voice of the Lord. This is His preamble 00:14:33.90\00:14:38.99 to His Constitution of Grace. 00:14:39.09\00:14:41.63 So look at verse 2. 00:14:41.93\00:14:43.84 "I am the Lord your God who brought you out of the land 00:14:44.04\00:14:48.35 of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. " 00:14:48.45\00:14:51.67 What is God wanting to establish in our hearts here? 00:14:51.87\00:14:55.61 He's saying: I am your Deliverer. I am delivering you 00:14:55.81\00:14:59.39 out of darkness and into My light. I am cutting you free 00:14:59.49\00:15:02.97 from the cord of the wicked that binds you. 00:15:03.07\00:15:05.15 Now listen and learn from My law of love, My holy principles 00:15:05.35\00:15:10.06 of My universal government. 00:15:10.16\00:15:11.83 The constitution of My grace, My divine directive 00:15:12.03\00:15:16.43 that sustains, maintains, and upholds My universal dominion 00:15:16.63\00:15:21.31 over all that I have created. 00:15:21.42\00:15:23.03 You see, My Commandments are ten promises 00:15:23.23\00:15:27.00 of what I will do in your life if you will just surrender 00:15:27.10\00:15:31.20 control of your life to Me. So listen and learn. 00:15:31.30\00:15:33.94 Verse 3: "You shall have no other gods before Me. " 00:15:34.14\00:15:38.45 How does this reflect His grace? 00:15:38.66\00:15:41.32 He is saying: I will cause you to know My love for you 00:15:41.52\00:15:46.78 and understand My power. I will be your Father. 00:15:46.88\00:15:52.32 I will be the object of your worship 00:15:52.52\00:15:55.16 when you come to know Me. 00:15:55.26\00:15:56.84 Verse 4: "You shall not make for yourself a carved image 00:15:57.04\00:16:01.20 or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above 00:16:01.30\00:16:04.22 or that is in earth beneath or that is in the water under 00:16:04.32\00:16:07.16 the earth. You shall not bow down to them nor serve them. " 00:16:07.26\00:16:09.94 He's saying: I am delivering you from false worship. 00:16:10.14\00:16:13.07 Because you will know Me by personal experience, 00:16:13.27\00:16:15.74 you'll not be like the pagans. Your worship will differ 00:16:15.84\00:16:19.53 from those who create their own gods rather than to worship 00:16:19.63\00:16:24.06 their Creator God. 00:16:24.16\00:16:25.84 And verse 7, which is our topic for this hour, 00:16:26.05\00:16:29.41 Exodus 20 verse 7: 00:16:29.61\00:16:31.59 He's saying: By My grace 00:16:36.98\00:16:39.04 I will empower you 00:16:39.14\00:16:40.88 to live a life that is worthy of Me 00:16:41.08\00:16:45.06 and worthy of My name. 00:16:45.17\00:16:47.08 Your life will be marked by reverence for Me in contrast 00:16:47.18\00:16:52.01 to being marred by malice, deceit, vanity, and emptiness. 00:16:52.15\00:16:57.50 You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain 00:16:57.64\00:17:00.58 for the Lord will not hold him guiltless 00:17:00.78\00:17:03.37 who takes His name in vain. 00:17:03.47\00:17:05.65 There are serious consequences for breaking this Commandment, 00:17:05.95\00:17:11.44 for taking God's name in vain. 00:17:11.74\00:17:13.36 Why are we held guilty if we take His name in vain? 00:17:13.57\00:17:16.42 What acts do we commit that amounts to 00:17:16.63\00:17:20.97 taking His name in vain? 00:17:21.07\00:17:22.07 To understand we must understand the majesty of the lawgiver 00:17:23.27\00:17:28.45 as Nehemiah did when he said in Nehemiah 9 verses 5-6. 00:17:28.95\00:17:34.89 Nehemiah 9 verses 5-6. He said: 00:17:35.29\00:17:39.46 You know, in Deuteronomy 28:58 we find out what God... 00:18:05.53\00:18:10.08 what our attitude - He wants our attitude to be toward His name. 00:18:10.38\00:18:14.28 He says: "Fear " - stand in awe and reverence 00:18:14.48\00:18:17.96 of this glorious and awesome name - "the Lord your God. " 00:18:18.06\00:18:23.61 The Bible refers to God by many names. 00:18:23.82\00:18:27.06 Many names. And they all reflect His character. 00:18:27.26\00:18:32.12 They all represent the glory of God and how He revealed 00:18:32.32\00:18:38.12 His character to His people 00:18:38.23\00:18:40.68 including His word and His law which is a transcript 00:18:40.88\00:18:44.19 of His character. Now, while you're in Exodus, turn to 00:18:44.30\00:18:47.32 chapter 33- Exodus 33- and we'll see a time 00:18:47.42\00:18:52.69 when God revealed His glory. Exodus 33. 00:18:52.79\00:18:57.09 Let's begin with verse 17. This is a conversation that 00:18:57.29\00:19:00.81 God had with Moses after Moses had slung those first tablets 00:19:00.91\00:19:06.16 of the Ten Commandments to the ground and broken them. 00:19:06.26\00:19:08.50 Exodus 33:17. "The Lord said to Moses, 00:19:08.70\00:19:12.66 I will also do this thing that you have spoken 00:19:12.76\00:19:15.06 for you have found grace in My sight and I know you by name. " 00:19:15.17\00:19:18.95 And he, Moses, replied: "Please, show me Your glory. " 00:19:19.15\00:19:23.83 Then He, God, said: "I will make all my goodness pass before you 00:19:24.03\00:19:27.99 and I will proclaim the name of the Lord before you. 00:19:28.02\00:19:30.54 I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, 00:19:30.75\00:19:33.24 and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. " 00:19:33.34\00:19:36.38 But He said: "You cannot see My face, for no man shall see Me 00:19:36.58\00:19:41.41 and live. " And the Lord said: "Here is a place by Me, 00:19:41.52\00:19:45.88 and you shall stand on the rock. " Praise God 00:19:45.98\00:19:49.71 for our Rock, Jesus Christ! 00:19:49.91\00:19:52.17 "So it shall be while My glory passes by that I will put you 00:19:53.36\00:19:58.23 in the cleft of the rock... " 00:19:58.34\00:20:00.64 He hideth my soul in the cleft of the rock. 00:20:00.85\00:20:03.40 "and will cover you with My hand while I pass by. 00:20:03.61\00:20:06.07 Then I will take away My hand and you shall see my back 00:20:06.27\00:20:08.90 but My face shall not be seen. " 00:20:09.00\00:20:11.10 Now continuing on in the next chapter - Exodus 34 verse 1: 00:20:11.30\00:20:14.86 "The Lord said to Moses, cut two tablets of stone 00:20:15.16\00:20:19.41 like the first ones, and I will write on these tablets 00:20:19.51\00:20:25.20 the words that were on the first tablets that you broke. " 00:20:25.30\00:20:28.52 Who wrote the second set of tablets? 00:20:28.72\00:20:30.88 God did! It was always and only by His finger because man 00:20:31.08\00:20:35.77 was not supposed to touch His Ten Commandments. 00:20:35.87\00:20:39.68 And He said: "So be ready in the morning and come up in the 00:20:39.88\00:20:44.32 morning to Mount Sinai and present yourself to Me there 00:20:44.42\00:20:46.80 on the top of the mountain. And no man shall come up with you 00:20:46.90\00:20:49.85 and let no man be seen throughout all the mountain. 00:20:49.95\00:20:52.06 Let neither flocks nor herds feed before that mountain. 00:20:52.16\00:20:55.66 So he, Moses, cut two tablets of stone like the first ones. 00:20:55.86\00:20:59.87 Then Moses rose early in the morning and went up Mount Sinai 00:21:00.07\00:21:03.20 as the Lord had commanded him. And he took in his hand the 00:21:03.40\00:21:05.67 two tablets of stone. Now the Lord descended 00:21:05.77\00:21:08.61 in a cloud and stood with him there 00:21:08.71\00:21:11.63 and proclaimed the name of the Lord. " 00:21:11.83\00:21:15.63 Moses said: "Show me Your glory. " 00:21:15.83\00:21:17.92 God proclaimed His name. 00:21:18.06\00:21:20.22 "And the Lord passed before him and proclaimed THE LORD, 00:21:20.29\00:21:23.14 THE LORD GOD, MERCIFUL AND GRACIOUS, 00:21:23.24\00:21:25.88 LONGSUFFERING AND ABOUNDING IN GOODNESS AND TRUTH. 00:21:25.99\00:21:29.11 Keeping mercy for thousands. Forgiving iniquity and 00:21:29.21\00:21:32.04 transgression and sin. By no means clearing the guilty. 00:21:32.14\00:21:35.11 Visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children 00:21:35.21\00:21:38.83 and the children's children to the 3rd and 4th generation. " 00:21:38.93\00:21:42.15 Now, what was Moses' response to this revealed glory? 00:21:42.18\00:21:46.94 "Moses made haste, and he bowed his head toward the earth 00:21:47.14\00:21:51.26 and worshiped. Then he said: If now I have found grace 00:21:51.36\00:21:55.20 in your sight, oh Lord, let My Lord, I pray, go among us 00:21:55.30\00:21:59.39 even though we are a stiff-necked people 00:21:59.49\00:22:02.57 and pardon our inequity and our sin and take 00:22:02.77\00:22:05.74 as Your inheritance. " 00:22:05.88\00:22:08.59 God proclaimed His name as representing His glory, 00:22:08.79\00:22:14.31 His character. That's why His name is so exalted. 00:22:14.51\00:22:19.26 And let's look at what David wrote in Psalm 138 00:22:19.36\00:22:24.41 verses 2 and 3. Psalm 138:2-3. 00:22:24.71\00:22:30.64 And I believe the Amplified Version is 00:22:30.84\00:22:32.62 going to be on the screen here. 00:22:32.72\00:22:35.02 David prayed: 00:22:35.22\00:22:36.84 "In the day when I called You answered me; 00:22:58.12\00:22:59.92 you strengthened me with strength in my inner self. " 00:23:00.02\00:23:03.40 Why does God magnify His Word even above His name? 00:23:03.60\00:23:08.10 Because in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God 00:23:08.31\00:23:11.17 and the Word WAS God. 00:23:11.27\00:23:13.73 And He became flesh and tabernacled among us. 00:23:13.93\00:23:17.15 We have to recognize the majesty of the name of God 00:23:17.35\00:23:22.77 which represents His character. So when we take His name in vain 00:23:22.87\00:23:28.56 we are slandering His character. 00:23:28.66\00:23:31.76 Now I... as I was looking at this 00:23:31.96\00:23:36.08 and thinking about this message, 00:23:36.28\00:23:38.90 I thought... am I preaching to the choir? 00:23:39.10\00:23:42.06 Do any of us take God's name in vain? 00:23:42.26\00:23:44.68 You know, I know that last year when I did Commandment #9 00:23:45.64\00:23:49.95 I thought... I'm not guilty of bearing false witness. 00:23:50.15\00:23:53.49 Until I studied it out in depth 00:23:53.69\00:23:56.21 and I found myself before the Lord saying: 00:23:56.41\00:23:59.57 "Oh, Father, God, forgive me every time I have repeated 00:23:59.71\00:24:03.52 a rumor. Lord, forgive me for the things 00:24:03.62\00:24:08.69 that I did not see in Your law. 00:24:08.79\00:24:11.87 I was looking at the letter of the law and not the 00:24:12.07\00:24:14.02 spirit of the law. " And, you know something, 00:24:14.12\00:24:16.46 even as... I mean, I would have never thought that I took 00:24:16.66\00:24:18.86 the name... the Lord's name in vain. 00:24:18.96\00:24:20.79 But as I began to study this I found myself saying: 00:24:20.99\00:24:23.76 "Oh, Father God, forgive me. 00:24:23.86\00:24:25.63 There are days that I feel like I've taken Your name in vain. " 00:24:25.83\00:24:29.61 And you know, this is the beauty of getting deep into the Word 00:24:29.81\00:24:34.24 of God. When we study His law, what happens is 00:24:34.34\00:24:38.70 that mirror that Jim was talking about, the law being a mirror 00:24:38.80\00:24:42.48 it... it becomes... the deeper we study the more we realize 00:24:42.58\00:24:47.13 there's dirt on our own face. And the beauty of it is 00:24:47.23\00:24:50.29 we recognize our great need for a Savior. 00:24:50.49\00:24:54.33 That's what it's all about. 00:24:54.53\00:24:56.69 Hebrews 4:12 says: "The Word of God is alive 00:24:56.89\00:24:59.22 and active and sharper than any two-edged sword. " 00:24:59.32\00:25:02.26 Even to the point of judging the intentions of our hearts 00:25:02.56\00:25:07.26 and our thoughts. So, what I've come up with 00:25:07.46\00:25:11.59 and this is... boy... a really, um... 00:25:11.79\00:25:15.92 condensed study from what I had first. 00:25:16.12\00:25:18.14 I was looking through this, and as I began to study 00:25:18.34\00:25:20.04 I told J.D.: "I've got a book here! " 00:25:20.14\00:25:22.06 But I want to give you four categories 00:25:22.74\00:25:25.26 of taking the Lord's name in vain. 00:25:25.36\00:25:27.49 And we are going to just kind of skim over the first three 00:25:27.69\00:25:30.24 quickly because of the limitation of time. 00:25:30.34\00:25:32.51 I want to really concentrate on the fourth category. 00:25:32.71\00:25:35.70 First, when we most frequently think of someone taking 00:25:36.50\00:25:40.20 God's name in vain, we think of the ungodly, disrespectful, 00:25:40.30\00:25:43.29 unbelieving, sacrilegious person 00:25:43.39\00:25:45.66 who uses God's name as an irreverent byword. 00:25:45.86\00:25:50.17 A curse word. 00:25:50.37\00:25:51.99 Second, swearing falsely is also taking God's name in vain. 00:25:52.19\00:25:57.51 Not performing our oaths to the Lord. 00:25:57.71\00:26:00.06 That's taking His name in vain. 00:26:00.26\00:26:02.31 Third, becoming wearied by the requirements of true worship 00:26:03.55\00:26:08.88 and offering less than our best to God 00:26:08.98\00:26:12.01 is taking His name in vain. 00:26:12.11\00:26:14.44 Number four: hypocrisy. 00:26:14.74\00:26:16.70 Dishonest, double-minded behavior. 00:26:17.51\00:26:20.15 Insincere, empty talk; not walking the talk. 00:26:20.35\00:26:24.05 Deceitful rebellion against God's governing regulations. 00:26:24.25\00:26:28.71 In other words, disobedience. 00:26:29.11\00:26:31.21 That's taking God's name in vain. 00:26:31.41\00:26:33.18 So let's look at those first... those four categories. 00:26:33.38\00:26:36.54 First, those ungodly, irreverent people who use His name 00:26:36.64\00:26:41.24 as a byword. You know, in my professional career 00:26:41.34\00:26:44.72 just right out of college... I have almost always been the 00:26:44.82\00:26:47.50 only woman on an all-male team. 00:26:47.60\00:26:49.94 And frequently I would... my male counterparts 00:26:50.14\00:26:54.07 would fit into this first category. 00:26:54.17\00:26:56.93 They would use God's name in an irreverent way. 00:26:57.13\00:26:59.89 And when they came to know me and as I voiced my opinion 00:27:00.19\00:27:03.94 most often - almost always - they would respect my opinion 00:27:04.04\00:27:09.95 and respect me. And they would not do this in my presence. 00:27:10.05\00:27:12.95 But I worked for a company... the last company I actually 00:27:13.15\00:27:17.13 worked for before going into full-time ministry, 00:27:17.23\00:27:20.14 where the director of development was a computer 00:27:20.24\00:27:22.88 programmer. He was... a software company. 00:27:22.98\00:27:25.31 And this man used God's name in vain in that irreverent 00:27:25.61\00:27:30.23 byword all throughout the day. 00:27:30.33\00:27:32.83 And everybody was very intimidated by this man because 00:27:33.03\00:27:37.22 if you got on his bad side, he would not help you 00:27:37.35\00:27:41.52 and you could not do your job. 00:27:41.62\00:27:43.05 And he was the program/computer developer. 00:27:43.25\00:27:46.24 But I was so grieved that I couldn't help but speak up. 00:27:46.87\00:27:51.54 And when I told him what it meant to me - 00:27:51.74\00:27:56.03 the name of the Lord - and how I felt when he did this, 00:27:56.23\00:27:59.12 rather than respecting me he ramped up his behavior. 00:27:59.32\00:28:04.53 He got worse! 00:28:04.83\00:28:06.54 And so... You know, this is something that 00:28:06.74\00:28:10.39 as he ignored my request, I realized this is the one that 00:28:10.59\00:28:14.23 God would say is an enemy against God. 00:28:14.34\00:28:16.97 Look at this: Psalm 139. 00:28:17.07\00:28:18.85 Psalm 139, verses 19 and 20: 00:28:19.05\00:28:21.87 So each time he would do this, I determined in my heart 00:28:35.05\00:28:40.49 that I wasn't just going to let it go by. 00:28:40.60\00:28:42.47 And what I would say every time he would use the name of the 00:28:42.67\00:28:46.01 Lord in vain around me I'd say: 00:28:46.11\00:28:47.63 "The name of the Lord is great and greatly to be praised. 00:28:47.83\00:28:51.32 Give glory to His holy name. " 00:28:51.35\00:28:53.53 Amen. 00:28:53.73\00:28:54.91 And I want to tell you, this irritated him beyond no end. 00:28:55.01\00:28:58.30 And so finally one day he came to me and he said: 00:28:58.70\00:29:01.87 "I'm tired of you doing that. " 00:29:02.08\00:29:03.92 And I said: "You've got to be kidding. 00:29:04.12\00:29:06.59 You're upset by me saying this? " 00:29:06.79\00:29:09.89 And I sat and I talked with him more. 00:29:10.09\00:29:13.03 And you know, this man became a good friend, 00:29:13.24\00:29:17.83 and he did not take the name of the Lord in vain any more. 00:29:18.03\00:29:22.57 Not just around me, but he quit taking the name of the Lord 00:29:22.77\00:29:26.21 in vain around others. 00:29:26.31\00:29:28.39 And God gave me favor with this man. 00:29:28.59\00:29:31.48 As Christians we need to be especially careful 00:29:31.68\00:29:35.20 to reverence God's name. 00:29:35.30\00:29:38.05 We need to take caution not to use His name 00:29:38.25\00:29:41.90 as a byword in careless phrases as "Oh, my God. " 00:29:42.10\00:29:46.61 Or "God only knows. " Or, "I swear to God. " 00:29:46.81\00:29:50.73 We've got to be careful not to use His name lightly 00:29:50.93\00:29:54.90 in jesting. You know... I know that you all have 00:29:55.00\00:30:00.15 received these... Some of you may have sent me 00:30:00.25\00:30:02.26 some of these so forgive me. 00:30:02.36\00:30:03.62 People are sending a lot of jokes about Jesus and Satan 00:30:03.82\00:30:08.03 and they'll say: "Oh, these are cute. " 00:30:08.13\00:30:09.92 Oh please don't send those to me. 00:30:10.13\00:30:12.84 They grieve my soul because the name of the Lord 00:30:13.04\00:30:15.81 is great and greatly to be praised. 00:30:15.91\00:30:18.11 And we need to give glory to Him that is due glory. 00:30:18.31\00:30:22.26 Never... As Christians we need to be careful 00:30:22.67\00:30:26.62 never to offer a prayer in a robotic, jesting manner. 00:30:26.82\00:30:32.76 Casually repeating canned and clever phrases. 00:30:32.86\00:30:37.04 That's taking His name in vain. 00:30:37.24\00:30:39.83 Prayer is a great privilege, and when we come to Him 00:30:40.03\00:30:43.21 we should pause for just a moment as we think about 00:30:43.31\00:30:47.31 this great God who tell us we can call him Abba. 00:30:47.41\00:30:52.48 You know, Jesus taught us in Matthew 6:9 how to pray. 00:30:53.85\00:30:56.81 He said: "In this manner therefore pray, 00:30:57.01\00:30:59.29 Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name. " 00:30:59.39\00:31:04.94 What does it mean to be hallowed? 00:31:05.24\00:31:08.11 It means to be kept holy. 00:31:08.31\00:31:11.36 Jesus was saying: "Our Father in heaven 00:31:11.56\00:31:14.22 Your name is to be kept holy. " 00:31:14.42\00:31:17.51 And He did. 00:31:17.71\00:31:19.32 Jesus did! 00:31:19.52\00:31:20.74 In John 17 when He was praying in the garden 00:31:20.84\00:31:24.11 before we went to... to Gethsemane, 00:31:24.21\00:31:28.43 in John 17 verse 11, just listen. 00:31:28.63\00:31:31.45 He says: "Now I am no longer in the world but these are in 00:31:31.75\00:31:34.86 the world and I come to You, Holy Father. 00:31:34.96\00:31:38.98 Keep through Your name those whom You have given Me 00:31:40.26\00:31:42.68 that they may be one as We are one. " 00:31:42.78\00:31:45.12 It goes on in verse 25: 00:31:45.32\00:31:47.41 "O righteous Father, the world has not known You 00:31:47.61\00:31:52.09 but I have known You, and these have known that You sent Me. " 00:31:52.29\00:31:58.15 Jesus addressed His Father as holy and righteous. 00:31:58.35\00:32:02.76 Should we not also, likewise, worship in the same manner? 00:32:02.96\00:32:07.72 The second category of taking God's name in vain is 00:32:07.75\00:32:12.01 swearing falsely. 00:32:12.11\00:32:14.11 Not performing our oaths to the Lord. 00:32:14.31\00:32:17.63 Look to the screen and you'll see Leviticus 19 and verse 12. 00:32:17.83\00:32:22.33 Leviticus 19 and verse 12 says: 00:32:22.53\00:32:25.24 God wants us to be serious. 00:32:38.23\00:32:41.08 Let our yes be yes and our no be no. 00:32:41.18\00:32:43.42 You know, Jesus picked this up in Matthew 5:33. 00:32:43.52\00:32:46.99 He says: "Again you have heard it said that it was said to 00:32:47.19\00:32:50.73 those of old you shall not swear falsely but shall perform 00:32:50.83\00:32:53.07 your oaths to the Lord but I say to you do not swear at all. 00:32:53.17\00:32:56.82 Neither by heaven for it is God's throne 00:32:57.03\00:32:58.75 nor by the earth for it is His footstool 00:32:58.85\00:33:00.91 nor by Jerusalem for it is the city of the great king 00:33:01.11\00:33:03.86 nor shall you swear by your head because you cannot make one hair 00:33:03.96\00:33:07.47 white or black. " I guess that was before Loreal. 00:33:07.58\00:33:10.73 "But let your yes be yes and your no be no 00:33:10.93\00:33:16.17 for whatever is more than these is from the evil one. " 00:33:16.37\00:33:20.78 Oh how cautious we need to be. 00:33:20.98\00:33:23.66 The third category of taking His name in vain 00:33:23.86\00:33:26.62 is when we become wearied by the requirements of true worship 00:33:26.72\00:33:29.98 and offer less than our best. 00:33:30.08\00:33:32.74 I have to tell you, this is the one that got to me. 00:33:32.94\00:33:35.04 As I studied this out I thought Lord, I let my schedule get 00:33:35.63\00:33:39.59 so crammed that sometimes I'm going off to do a revival 00:33:39.69\00:33:45.56 series somewhere and I'm studying on the plane 00:33:45.66\00:33:49.62 to get the message. And I feel like sometimes I'm giving God 00:33:49.72\00:33:53.39 less than my best. 00:33:53.50\00:33:55.07 But look... Turn if you will to Malachi, 00:33:55.27\00:33:58.24 the last book of the Bible... Old Testament... 00:33:58.44\00:34:02.60 the last book of the Old Testament, 00:34:02.80\00:34:04.33 Malachi chapter 1. 00:34:04.53\00:34:06.39 Malachi chapter 1. 00:34:07.24\00:34:11.99 We are going to begin in verse 6 and here God is speaking of 00:34:12.19\00:34:17.55 offering polluted things. 00:34:17.65\00:34:21.44 In Malachi 1 verse 6, this is the Lord speaking: 00:34:21.54\00:34:25.19 He said: "A son honors his father and a servant his master. 00:34:25.39\00:34:29.20 If then I am the Father, where is My honor? 00:34:29.40\00:34:32.28 And if I am the Master, where is My reverence? 00:34:32.38\00:34:35.03 saith the Lord of Hosts. To you priests who despise My name. 00:34:35.24\00:34:39.21 You say 'In what way have we despised Your name? ' 00:34:39.41\00:34:43.93 You offer defiled food on My altar but say 'In what way 00:34:44.13\00:34:48.24 have we defiled you? ' 00:34:48.34\00:34:49.81 By saying the table of the Lord is contemptible. 00:34:50.01\00:34:53.47 And when you offer the blind as a sacrifice, is it not evil? 00:34:53.68\00:34:57.61 And when you offer the lame and the sick, is it not evil? 00:34:57.81\00:35:01.43 Offer it then to your governor. Would he be pleased with you? 00:35:01.63\00:35:05.01 Would he accept you favorably? says the Lord of Hosts. 00:35:05.21\00:35:07.93 But now entreat God's favor that He may be gracious to us. 00:35:08.13\00:35:12.37 While this is being done by your hands, will He accept you 00:35:12.47\00:35:15.64 favorably? says the Lord of Hosts. 00:35:15.74\00:35:17.89 Who is there even among you who would shut the door so that 00:35:18.09\00:35:22.65 you would not kindle fire on My altar in vain. 00:35:22.75\00:35:26.26 I have no pleasure in you says the Lord of Hosts. 00:35:26.47\00:35:29.12 Nor will I accept an offering from your hand. " 00:35:29.32\00:35:32.26 Now let's take that apart. 00:35:32.46\00:35:34.09 The priests and the people had found God's requirements 00:35:34.29\00:35:37.59 for sacrifice and worship contemptible. 00:35:37.69\00:35:40.60 Are we not a holy nation, a royal priesthood? 00:35:40.80\00:35:44.53 Is this not also applicable to us? 00:35:44.73\00:35:47.19 And when they found the requirements for worship 00:35:48.99\00:35:53.52 contemptible, God found their acts of worship contemptible. 00:35:53.56\00:35:57.95 In fact He said: "Who among you would shut the door? " 00:35:58.15\00:36:01.69 Shut the door to the church? Don't offer... 00:36:01.89\00:36:05.53 Don't kindle and offering in vain to Me. 00:36:05.93\00:36:09.55 I'd rather the doors be shut. 00:36:09.75\00:36:11.57 God help us. 00:36:11.77\00:36:13.70 Have we forgotten the reverence due a holy God? 00:36:13.90\00:36:19.67 Have we become so overly- familiar with Him that we forget 00:36:21.02\00:36:24.93 to stand in awe and honor of Almighty God? 00:36:25.03\00:36:30.26 Has church become a social club? 00:36:30.46\00:36:33.36 Do we come to honor and worship Him in truth and in spirit? 00:36:35.51\00:36:38.86 Or do we come to be entertained? 00:36:39.06\00:36:41.58 Or even worse, to be wearied 00:36:41.78\00:36:44.02 because the sermon went too long? 00:36:44.12\00:36:46.02 Do we criticize the message from scripture 00:36:47.48\00:36:50.37 when we are called to magnify the Word of God? 00:36:50.47\00:36:53.85 Let's continue on Malachi 1:11. 00:36:54.05\00:36:56.54 God is speaking and He says: "From the rising of the sun 00:36:57.77\00:37:00.11 even to its going down, My name shall be great 00:37:00.21\00:37:03.27 among the Gentiles. In every place incense shall be offered 00:37:03.37\00:37:08.07 to My name and a pure offering. For My name shall be great 00:37:08.17\00:37:12.08 among the nations says the Lord of Hosts. " 00:37:12.18\00:37:13.91 God's telling them: "I've got a solution. " 00:37:14.21\00:37:16.45 If my people won't correct their behavior, I'll raise up 00:37:16.65\00:37:20.68 a people who will. 00:37:20.78\00:37:21.92 I'll raise up a people who worship Me with gratefulness 00:37:22.22\00:37:26.83 and purity in heart. 00:37:26.93\00:37:28.04 Continuing on in Malachi 1:12 00:37:28.24\00:37:31.15 "But you profane it, " - My name - 00:37:31.36\00:37:34.66 "You profane My name in what you say. 00:37:34.76\00:37:37.72 The table of the Lord is defiled and it's food is contemptible. 00:37:37.82\00:37:42.33 You also say 'Oh, what a weariness ' 00:37:42.53\00:37:45.96 and you sneer at it says the Lord God. " 00:37:46.16\00:37:49.53 The priests profaned and perverted sacred things 00:37:49.73\00:37:53.13 sneering at them. They provoked God by profaning His holy name. 00:37:53.23\00:37:57.31 Taking His name in vain. 00:37:57.41\00:37:58.95 And perhaps they started in full-time ministry 00:37:59.15\00:38:01.80 with the right heart and the right spirit, 00:38:01.90\00:38:04.25 but somewhere along the line they became polluted with pride. 00:38:04.45\00:38:07.86 Obviously, they weren't reflecting on or acknowledging 00:38:08.26\00:38:11.87 their own spiritual condition because they had the audacity 00:38:11.97\00:38:15.04 to speak back to God and say: How did we profane Your name? 00:38:15.14\00:38:18.52 They sneered at the offering by which they were to live. 00:38:19.98\00:38:23.41 They thought it was too little, too plain for them, 00:38:23.62\00:38:28.06 contemptible. They thought that they deserved more 00:38:28.26\00:38:31.56 because they served in the temple. 00:38:31.66\00:38:33.71 Continuing in verse 11: "You bring the stolen, the lame 00:38:34.11\00:38:38.77 and the sick; thus you bring an offering. 00:38:38.87\00:38:41.38 Should I accept this from your hand? says the Lord. 00:38:41.58\00:38:44.29 But cursed be the deceiver who has in his flock a male 00:38:45.76\00:38:51.35 and takes it out but sacrifices to the Lord what is blemished. 00:38:51.45\00:38:56.68 For I am a great King, says the Lord of Hosts. 00:38:56.88\00:39:00.49 And My name is to be feared among the nations. " 00:39:00.69\00:39:03.97 The people had reckless regard for the holy ordinances. 00:39:04.17\00:39:08.24 The sacrifices that they brought 00:39:08.44\00:39:10.55 and the sacrifices that were accepted were substandard. 00:39:10.75\00:39:15.23 It was not their best. 00:39:15.43\00:39:16.50 They felt it was enough just to come to the altar 00:39:16.70\00:39:19.57 of sacrifice, and surely they didn't need to bring an 00:39:19.87\00:39:22.70 acceptable offering. 00:39:22.80\00:39:24.23 Surely they didn't need to read their Sabbath School lesson 00:39:24.44\00:39:26.48 before they came to Sabbath School. 00:39:26.58\00:39:28.23 He is a holy God whom we should worship in holiness 00:39:30.09\00:39:34.75 and reverence, in spirit and in truth. 00:39:34.85\00:39:37.60 The people and the priests had become wearied 00:39:37.80\00:39:41.82 by real worship. Their offerings, God says, 00:39:42.02\00:39:46.58 were offered in vain for God was not pleased 00:39:46.68\00:39:49.70 with their acts of taking His name in vain. 00:39:49.83\00:39:53.03 You know, the Jews were jealous for the name of God. 00:39:53.43\00:39:57.46 They were fearful of mispronouncing the name 00:39:57.56\00:40:00.15 so they had the Tetragrammaton. 00:40:00.26\00:40:03.19 And the Tetragrammaton was 4 Hebrew letters - 00:40:03.29\00:40:07.90 I believe that will be on the screen here - 00:40:08.10\00:40:09.67 And it's... There were two words that they used. 00:40:09.87\00:40:13.84 The first was YHWH. 00:40:13.94\00:40:17.69 Yahweh is what we assume it's pronounced. 00:40:17.89\00:40:20.88 They had removed all of the vowels. 00:40:20.99\00:40:23.70 And what Yahweh means is I AM. 00:40:23.91\00:40:27.98 This is from a Hebrew verb that means to be. 00:40:28.19\00:40:33.49 But they had a second, and that was JHVH: Jehovah. 00:40:33.69\00:40:39.19 And this was from a combination of two Hebrew words: 00:40:39.40\00:40:42.69 Lord and God. 00:40:42.72\00:40:45.86 So Jehovah means Lord God. 00:40:46.06\00:40:48.23 The Jews did not pronounce the Tetragrammaton. 00:40:48.43\00:40:51.89 Yet... Bear with me because I do not want to 00:40:52.09\00:40:58.06 in any way offend any of our Jewish audience that might be 00:40:58.17\00:41:03.42 tuning in right now. 00:41:03.52\00:41:04.94 But I Corinthians 6:17 says 00:41:05.14\00:41:07.69 that those who are in Christ are one in spirit with Him. 00:41:07.89\00:41:11.19 The Bible tells me in Romans 8:15 00:41:12.19\00:41:14.80 that He has put His Spirit in my heart. 00:41:15.00\00:41:18.41 It says: "You did not receive the spirit of bondage again 00:41:18.61\00:41:21.77 to fear but you received the spirit of adoption by 00:41:21.87\00:41:25.21 whom you cry out Abba Father. " 00:41:25.31\00:41:27.93 My spirit's from Him, it is of Him, 00:41:28.13\00:41:30.66 so I believe with all of my heart that I have the right 00:41:30.86\00:41:35.69 to call on the name of the Lord. 00:41:35.89\00:41:37.97 And it's not mispronouncing the name of the Lord 00:41:38.17\00:41:42.02 that slanders His name, 00:41:42.12\00:41:45.16 defaming it, profaning it. 00:41:45.36\00:41:47.30 It is our ACTS that slander His name. 00:41:47.50\00:41:53.07 When the Jewish nation - being so cautious not to mispronounce 00:41:54.46\00:41:59.59 His name... Listen to what Paul told them in Romans chapter 2. 00:41:59.69\00:42:02.70 You don't have to turn there. 00:42:02.90\00:42:04.08 But Paul told the Roman Jews: "Indeed you were called a Jew. 00:42:04.18\00:42:06.77 You rest on the law and make your boast in God. 00:42:06.97\00:42:09.58 You know His will and approve the things that are excellent 00:42:09.78\00:42:12.69 being instructed out of the law 00:42:12.79\00:42:14.75 and are confident that you yourself are a guide 00:42:14.95\00:42:17.15 to the blind. A light to those who walk in darkness. 00:42:17.25\00:42:20.40 An instructor of the foolish, a teacher of babes, 00:42:20.60\00:42:23.89 having the form of knowledge and truth in the law. " 00:42:24.09\00:42:27.42 Says a lot about the law of God right there, doesn't it? 00:42:27.62\00:42:29.71 "You, therefore, who teach another... 00:42:29.91\00:42:32.89 do you not teach yourself? 00:42:33.09\00:42:35.40 You who preach that a man should not steal, do you steal? 00:42:35.60\00:42:39.88 You who say do not commit adultery, 00:42:40.08\00:42:42.32 do you commit adultery? 00:42:42.52\00:42:43.81 You who abhor idols, do you rob temples? 00:42:44.01\00:42:46.72 You who make your boast in the law, do you dishonor God 00:42:46.92\00:42:52.03 through breaking the law? " 00:42:52.13\00:42:54.10 Can he ask us that very question today? 00:42:55.23\00:42:57.86 "For the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles 00:42:58.06\00:43:03.88 because of you as it is written. " 00:43:04.08\00:43:06.83 As a Christian, when we go into public... 00:43:07.13\00:43:12.53 Let me start that over. 00:43:12.83\00:43:14.49 As a Christian in our home, are we blaspheming 00:43:14.70\00:43:19.73 the name of the Lord taking it in vain? 00:43:19.83\00:43:22.28 Do our children see us arguing, 00:43:22.39\00:43:25.59 fighting, no love? 00:43:25.79\00:43:29.30 Do they see us doing the very things that we tell them 00:43:29.51\00:43:32.44 not to do? That's taking God's name in vain. 00:43:32.54\00:43:35.57 And if we are Christian in the business world 00:43:35.87\00:43:38.52 or you just go out to Wal-Mart - wherever you are going - 00:43:38.62\00:43:42.37 people are watching. 00:43:42.57\00:43:46.04 And your behavior, if you get inpatient in line 00:43:46.25\00:43:49.95 and you think you're entitled to better treatment 00:43:50.05\00:43:52.59 and you get all puffed up, 00:43:52.69\00:43:55.04 you're taking God's name in vain. 00:43:55.24\00:43:59.50 You're profaning the name of the Lord, and that causes people to 00:43:59.60\00:44:02.88 blaspheme the name of God. 00:44:02.98\00:44:05.43 Now very quickly, the fourth category: hypocrisy. 00:44:05.63\00:44:09.80 Dishonest, double-minded behavior. Insincere, empty talk. 00:44:10.10\00:44:14.68 Deceitful rebellion against God's governing regulations. 00:44:14.78\00:44:18.44 The third commandment when it said "You shall not take the 00:44:18.64\00:44:21.13 name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold 00:44:21.23\00:44:24.35 him guiltless who takes His name in vain. " 00:44:24.45\00:44:28.47 That word vain in the Hebrew is shav: S-H-A-V. 00:44:28.67\00:44:33.94 Here's Vine's Expository Dictionary... this is how 00:44:34.24\00:44:38.33 it explains that word vain. 00:44:38.43\00:44:41.24 Deceit, deception, malice, falsity, vanity, emptiness. 00:44:41.44\00:44:45.96 That's what's taking the Lord's name in vain. 00:44:46.16\00:44:48.70 Strong's defines it this way: emptiness, vanity, falsehood, 00:44:48.90\00:44:52.67 nothingness, emptiness of speech, lying, 00:44:52.77\00:44:56.29 worthlessness of conduct. 00:44:56.39\00:44:58.33 Wow! That's taking God's name in vain. 00:44:58.54\00:45:02.36 Let's look on the screen at Mark chapter 7. 00:45:03.76\00:45:07.97 We are going to read just a few verses here. 00:45:08.17\00:45:10.25 Mark chapter 7. We'll begin with verses 6 and 7. 00:45:10.35\00:45:15.06 This is Jesus speaking. 00:45:15.26\00:45:17.18 He's going to prove to them that hypocrisy is the essence 00:45:21.15\00:45:24.47 of taking God's name in vain. 00:45:24.58\00:45:26.63 in vain... which in the Greek means to no purpose... 00:45:40.47\00:45:43.57 Now skip down to verse 9. He says: 00:45:49.10\00:45:51.72 verse 13 00:45:56.04\00:45:57.30 Oh how cautious we need to be 00:46:06.35\00:46:10.58 that we are not taking God's name in vain. 00:46:10.68\00:46:14.79 Something that's even more alarming. 00:46:15.29\00:46:17.71 I want to put another one on the screen: 00:46:17.81\00:46:18.97 Matthew 7 verses 21 through 23. 00:46:19.07\00:46:22.21 This one ought to alarm all of us. 00:46:22.41\00:46:24.73 This ought to get each one of us to checking our spiritual 00:46:24.93\00:46:28.05 pulse. Matthew 7:21-23: 00:46:28.15\00:46:31.39 He says: "Not... " This is Jesus... 00:46:31.79\00:46:35.96 These who thought they were in full-time ministry, 00:47:07.83\00:47:12.11 thought they were doing the word of the Lord, 00:47:12.41\00:47:15.31 professing the name of the Lord, working in the name of the Lord. 00:47:15.41\00:47:18.63 Jesus says: "I don't know you. " 00:47:18.83\00:47:22.20 You see professing the name is not what qualifies us for 00:47:22.40\00:47:25.67 heaven. Obedience by His grace, by His divine power, 00:47:25.77\00:47:31.28 His supernatural power for assistance. 00:47:31.38\00:47:34.33 THIS is what qualifies us, 00:47:34.54\00:47:37.11 equips us to enter the kingdom of heaven. 00:47:37.31\00:47:40.51 Listen to this. You know this scripture very well. 00:47:40.71\00:47:43.20 This whole passage. I John 3, verses4 through 8. 00:47:43.40\00:47:46.39 "Whoever commits sin also commits... " What? 00:47:46.59\00:47:51.80 "lawlessness. " And sin is lawlessness. 00:47:52.00\00:47:56.77 When we break the law of God that's sin. 00:47:56.97\00:48:00.32 "And you know that He was manifested to take away our sins 00:48:00.53\00:48:03.83 and in Him there is no sin. 00:48:03.93\00:48:06.48 Whoever abides in Him" - in Christ - "does not sin. 00:48:06.68\00:48:13.12 Whoever sins has neither seen Him nor known Him. " 00:48:13.35\00:48:17.15 Now let me stop for a second 00:48:17.25\00:48:18.82 because this is something that could really put a guilt trip 00:48:19.02\00:48:22.58 on us. And I have to explain that this word sin 00:48:22.68\00:48:26.31 in the Greek... this is a linear verb. 00:48:26.41\00:48:28.79 So He is saying here... 00:48:28.99\00:48:30.81 A linear verb is one that just starts here and it just keeps 00:48:31.01\00:48:33.70 on going. He is saying that anyone who abides 00:48:33.80\00:48:37.68 in Christ will not make a habit of sinning. 00:48:37.78\00:48:42.74 He will not continue on in sinning. 00:48:42.94\00:48:45.60 Doesn't mean that you will never fall short of the glory of God. 00:48:45.70\00:48:48.65 I fall short of the glory of God every day. 00:48:48.75\00:48:51.80 How about you? 00:48:52.00\00:48:53.98 But He goes on and He says in verse 7... 00:48:55.29\00:48:57.73 I John 3 and verse 7: 00:48:57.83\00:49:00.04 "Little children, let no one deceive you. 00:49:00.24\00:49:03.62 He who practices righteousness is righteous 00:49:03.82\00:49:08.16 just as He is righteous. 00:49:08.36\00:49:10.44 He who sins is of the devil, for the devil was sin from the 00:49:10.64\00:49:13.54 beginning and for THIS purpose the Son of God was manifested 00:49:13.64\00:49:17.38 that He might destroy the works of the devil. " 00:49:17.58\00:49:20.94 See, those who were calling on Him "Lord, Lord, " 00:49:21.14\00:49:23.82 they were calling on Him in pretense only. 00:49:23.92\00:49:27.74 They weren't walking in obedience to Him. 00:49:27.94\00:49:30.39 They weren't walking in surrender to God. 00:49:30.49\00:49:32.88 They were not really His followers 00:49:33.08\00:49:35.78 because they did not practice the Father's revealed will. 00:49:38.38\00:49:42.65 Perhaps even deceiving themselves into thinking 00:49:42.85\00:49:46.41 that what they offered... their own form of worship 00:49:46.61\00:49:49.68 that they offered... was enough. 00:49:49.78\00:49:51.29 Yet they refused to practice His will. 00:49:51.49\00:49:56.89 In II Timothy 2:19 Paul writes and says: 00:49:57.70\00:50:02.40 "The Lord knows those who are His. Let everyone who names 00:50:02.51\00:50:07.22 the name of Christ depart from iniquity. " 00:50:07.32\00:50:12.01 If we profess the name of the Lord, we must live according to 00:50:12.21\00:50:16.91 that profession. We need to depart from our lawless ways. 00:50:17.01\00:50:21.28 Otherwise we are nothing more than hypocrites 00:50:21.48\00:50:23.69 who are taking His name in vain 00:50:23.79\00:50:27.44 practicing a useless religion. 00:50:27.64\00:50:29.88 Let's look at Leviticus 22 and verse 31. 00:50:30.19\00:50:34.51 Leviticus 22 and verse 31. This will be on the screen. 00:50:34.71\00:50:37.84 And the Bible says: 00:50:37.94\00:50:39.63 He is saying My authority entitles Me to your honor 00:50:53.10\00:50:55.80 and your respect; my power entitles Me to your reverence. 00:50:55.90\00:50:59.04 "I am the Lord who SANCTIFIES you. " 00:50:59.14\00:51:01.83 By the power of His grace He will make us holy. 00:51:02.03\00:51:04.84 "Who brought you out of the land of Egypt. " 00:51:05.04\00:51:08.30 He's our Redeemer. 00:51:08.50\00:51:09.74 "To be your God: I am the Lord. " 00:51:09.95\00:51:11.89 Now do these words sound familiar? 00:51:11.99\00:51:14.27 He's repeating the preamble to His Constitution of Grace. 00:51:14.47\00:51:18.45 And He promises by His grace that He will sanctify us 00:51:18.75\00:51:24.05 and we will not hypocritically take His name in vain. 00:51:24.15\00:51:27.80 For God's Commandments become His promises of what He will do 00:51:28.00\00:51:32.36 in us if we will surrender to Him. 00:51:32.47\00:51:34.95 Now, let's look at this. 00:51:35.25\00:51:38.17 I Corinthians 15:10. I love this scripture 00:51:38.37\00:51:41.42 because it's all about grace. 00:51:42.22\00:51:44.22 I don't want to leave you with this heavy feeling today. 00:51:44.32\00:51:46.98 It's all about grace! 00:51:47.18\00:51:48.99 It's all about coming to the Lord in surrender and saying 00:51:49.19\00:51:52.44 "Father I need you. I recognize my sinfulness as a sinner. 00:51:52.54\00:51:56.32 Work in me to will and to act 00:51:56.52\00:51:58.71 according to Your good purpose. " 00:51:58.81\00:52:00.39 I Corinthians 15:10: 00:52:00.58\00:52:02.57 The grace of God is more than just unmerited favor. 00:52:18.79\00:52:23.27 The grace of God is His divine assistance; 00:52:23.47\00:52:26.83 His supernatural power for salvation. 00:52:26.94\00:52:29.04 Jesus Christ is your greatest gift of God. 00:52:29.24\00:52:31.55 Christ in you... your ONLY hope of glory. 00:52:31.75\00:52:34.15 The Holy Spirit is the second greatest gift of God 00:52:34.35\00:52:38.50 who works in us and allows God to do abundantly more 00:52:38.70\00:52:43.68 than we could ever think or ask. 00:52:43.78\00:52:45.53 And the Word of God... the sanctifying, transforming power 00:52:45.73\00:52:49.57 of the Word of God is another gift of His grace. 00:52:49.70\00:52:51.94 Do we call Him Savior and refuse to accept His gift of salvation 00:52:52.14\00:52:55.74 by grace? That's taking His name in vain, isn't it? 00:52:55.84\00:52:59.33 He says in Ephesians 2:8: "By grace you've been saved" 00:53:00.40\00:53:04.26 not... "by faith, not by works 00:53:04.46\00:53:08.04 that you should boast. " 00:53:08.14\00:53:09.72 But he goes on and then he says: 00:53:09.92\00:53:11.44 "It's a gift from God, and 00:53:11.64\00:53:13.54 we are His workmanship" prepared... 00:53:13.57\00:53:17.27 "created in Christ Jesus to do the good works that 00:53:17.31\00:53:19.79 He prepared beforehand that we should do. " 00:53:19.89\00:53:21.78 Do we call Him Lord and refuse to as He commands us? 00:53:21.98\00:53:25.67 That's taking His name in vain. 00:53:25.97\00:53:28.40 Look at what He says in I John 2. 00:53:28.60\00:53:30.72 I John 2 verses 3-6 which will be on the screen. 00:53:31.53\00:53:36.08 "But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is 00:53:51.00\00:53:53.80 perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. 00:53:53.90\00:53:57.87 He who says he abides in Him ought also himself to walk 00:53:57.97\00:54:03.63 just as He walked. " 00:54:03.74\00:54:05.51 You know, I want to share... I'm running out of time; 00:54:07.88\00:54:11.23 there's so much more to this. 00:54:11.43\00:54:13.47 But I just want to share this story with you. 00:54:13.77\00:54:16.02 When the Lord first gave me life affirmations from scripture 00:54:16.05\00:54:21.72 back in 1996 and as I began... 00:54:21.92\00:54:26.44 God taught me to speak His word over my life, 00:54:26.64\00:54:29.76 God brought me so close to Him because doing this 00:54:29.86\00:54:33.50 rewires your computer. Helps you to think about yourself 00:54:33.60\00:54:37.86 as God thinks about you. 00:54:37.96\00:54:39.63 And I knew that He said in Isaiah 55 verse 11 00:54:39.83\00:54:44.54 that "His word does not return to Him void but accomplishes 00:54:44.64\00:54:47.48 every purpose for which He sent it. " 00:54:47.58\00:54:49.45 I knew that he says in Jeremiah 1:12 00:54:49.55\00:54:52.27 "I am watching over My word to perform it. " 00:54:52.48\00:54:54.95 I knew in Romans 4:17 that He says: 00:54:55.15\00:54:57.50 "I am the God that gives life 00:54:57.60\00:54:58.71 to the dead and calls things 00:54:58.81\00:54:59.88 that are not as though they already were. " 00:54:59.98\00:55:01.88 But as I was speaking this word 00:55:02.08\00:55:04.39 over my life, 00:55:04.49\00:55:05.54 I would often just feel like "Oh Lord, I'm not there yet. 00:55:05.74\00:55:09.23 Help me. " And one day I went to this wedding 00:55:09.33\00:55:12.53 and it was a beautiful wedding. And at the reception afterwards, 00:55:12.83\00:55:16.52 it was a Catholic wedding, my first Catholic wedding. 00:55:16.62\00:55:18.47 But it was gorgeous. 00:55:18.58\00:55:19.65 And at the reception afterwards, the dinner, they had a dance. 00:55:19.85\00:55:22.54 And there was a little girl that had been the flower girl. 00:55:22.74\00:55:25.94 And, oh, she had this long beautiful hair with ribbons 00:55:26.04\00:55:29.16 flowing through her hair and she was in this long, flowing gown. 00:55:29.26\00:55:32.43 And her daddy took her out right toward the end of the dinner. 00:55:32.63\00:55:36.24 Her daddy took her out onto the dance floor after 00:55:36.44\00:55:39.54 the married couple had danced first. Then this father and his 00:55:39.64\00:55:43.91 little girl got out on the dance floor, 00:55:44.01\00:55:46.08 and everybody hushed and was watching. 00:55:46.28\00:55:48.68 And what he did was he took her little feet and put them on his 00:55:48.88\00:55:51.39 highly polished shoes. And then he took his hands in her hands 00:55:51.50\00:55:55.00 and he began just taking her around the room. 00:55:55.10\00:55:59.30 And she was in perfect harmony with her father, 00:55:59.40\00:56:01.42 and her face was beaming. 00:56:01.62\00:56:03.13 And I thought to myself... I don't know if I ever 00:56:03.33\00:56:05.83 experienced a moment like that with my father. 00:56:05.93\00:56:08.18 It's a fairly common ritual. 00:56:08.39\00:56:10.81 But I don't know, because my father was killed in a plane 00:56:11.01\00:56:13.34 crash when I was 6 years old. 00:56:13.44\00:56:15.25 But I want to tell you something. 00:56:15.45\00:56:17.20 I'll never forget the day that I experienced that moment 00:56:17.40\00:56:19.78 with my heavenly Father. 00:56:19.88\00:56:20.90 I was praying and I was claiming Galatians 5:25. 00:56:21.10\00:56:25.20 That "Because I am in Christ I am... live by the Spirit and 00:56:25.40\00:56:30.06 I also walk by the Spirit. Not running ahead; 00:56:30.16\00:56:32.88 not lagging behind. " 00:56:32.98\00:56:34.19 And then I began to weep before the Lord and I said 00:56:34.40\00:56:37.90 "Father, I know I'm not walking in step with Your Spirit. 00:56:38.10\00:56:40.58 Help me. HELP ME.
