What does jealousy mean?

When you see the word jealously
we usually think of it in

negative terms, but I would
like to suggest to you tonight

that there is a good jealously
as well as a bad jealously.

Jealously is defined in the
dictionary as being intolerant

of a rival or unfaithfulness
or hostile toward a rival

or one believed to
enjoy certain advantages.

Let's go and talk about
bad jealously to start with.

You can probably think of
many. I think of King Saul

with David and
how jealous he was.

I think of the elder
brother in the parable

who didn't want to
share because he was jealous

of his prodigal brother.

And then, of
course, there's self.

When self becomes an
idol, it's always bad news.

Let me talk about good
jealousy for just a moment.

Is it a good thing to
guard the nation's freedom?

Are you glad for
the Bill of Rights?

How about taking
care of your health?

Is it a good thing to
be jealous for your health?

How about your integrity?

The Bible says: "Contend
for the faith that was once

delivered to the saints. "

Is it a good thing
to guard the truth?

To be jealous for the truth?

How about guarding marriage?

Marriage is a
covenant between two people,

and marital love... and I'm
not only talking about intimacy

here, I'm talking about
the whole issue of emotional

attachment and
commitment to one another

in an environment
where children are raised.
00:09:20.41\00:09:22.46
I'm talking about
marital love belongs only in a
00:09:22.56\00:09:25.55
marriage covenant.

It cannot be given to moms
and dads; it cannot be given

to children. It cannot be
given to anyone except a spouse.

And even if it's
offered to someone else,

or you are offered someone's
marital love outside of that

marriage covenant, you
had better not touch it.

It should not be stolen.

It's all right to be jealous

over that covenant love.

because it's not very
popular to say nowadays,

but God has a holy jealously,

and if you mess with His wife

He's going to get mad.

That's plain English.

God believes, and I
believe He is right,

that He has exclusive...
What does exclusive mean?

Only! Has exclusive
rights to His church.

And He's not going to
give it up without a fight.

Contrary to popular opinion,

God does have a holy anger.

I don't have time to

But let me just give
you some quick examples.

When Elijah walked into

who had prostituted the
young men into homosexuality,

prostituted the
young women of the nation

into temple prostitutes, all
in the name of worshiping God
00:11:40.06\00:11:44.48
by means of Baal...
00:11:44.58\00:11:47.02
Elijah walks in and
says: "Look, God's not happy.
00:11:48.85\00:11:52.47
He's turning off the rain. "
00:11:52.67\00:11:54.28
And the rain for
3-1/2 years was turned off.
00:11:54.49\00:11:57.04
If you don't think that caused
suffering, you don't understand
00:11:57.14\00:11:59.84
what famine does to people.
00:11:59.94\00:12:02.88
God did that, and I
would like to suggest to you
00:12:05.85\00:12:11.07
that the horrible effects
of famine were more merciful
00:12:11.27\00:12:16.21
than the continued idolatry of
Ahab and Jezebel on the nation.

And, of course, there was
the exodus where God destroyed

the nation,
destroyed the firstborn,

destroyed Pharaoh and his
army in the midst of the sea.

In fact, He says in other
places "I brought you out.

I gave people
up for your life, "

He says to His church, Israel.
00:12:39.34\00:12:42.29
And then of course there's
Herod - who took the life of

the apostle James, who took
the head of John the Baptist,
00:12:45.74\00:12:49.06
who refused to
deliver Jesus from Pilate.
00:12:49.26\00:12:51.69
An angel of the Lord
struck him and he died of worms.

And then if you go
to the New Testament...

You say "Well that doesn't
fit my picture of Jesus. "

Well, don't argue with me...
just read the New Testament.

Testament and the seven churches

and this is Jesus speaking,
it's in red in your Bible.

And He speaks to the
church of Thyatira and He says:

and I'm telling you

her on a bed of suffering

her children with pestilence. "

There is a side

jealous anger for His church.

a big field, and anyway...

We just kind of got out of
the car and all of a sudden

this Chihuahua saw
this big reaping machine.

She'd never seen one of those
in her life, but she was willing

to get that thing.

Now, between her...
between her and the combine

am watching this Chihuahua

with all of its energy
heading out toward that combine.

And I'm watching a
Mac truck come like this.

My sense was pretty good, and
I'm not going to catch that dog.

Now I'll tell you, I love
my wife and knew that if that

dog got hurt that was
going to really hurt my wife.

And I like the dog,
too... don't misunderstand me.

crawls up on the foot of...

on the foot of the bed.

That was a jealous
response to save that dog's life

Listen, the results
of the violation of that

2nd Commandment... The
1st Commandment tells you WHO;

the 2nd Commandment
tells you HOW to worship God.

The 3rd Commandment tells
you the name and the sacredness

of that, and the 4th
Commandment tells you WHEN.

But the result of
violating that 2nd Commandment

caused great trouble for Israel

and I would like to suggest
for the Christian church.

You've got the golden calf.

Thousands of
people died over that.

You look at the story of
the Jewish people and the curses

of Deuteronomy. By the time
Jesus came, they... some of them

had actually made an
idol out of their temple.

That's what
Galatians is all about

is trying to wean the
early Christian church

away from a temporary
temple to the real one in heaven

and the real High Priest.

I want to go to what Jesus
said about this whole issue

to the woman at the
well. You know the text well.

Now, I want to say this quickly.

There's great mysteries
about God I don't understand,

and I'm not going to
solve all of them tonight.

But I want to tell you that
God does have a throne of fire

and when He's been seen, He
seems to have a form of a man.

But He is also
spirit. He is everywhere.

You cannot run
from the presence of God

no matter where you go.

And the other thing is
that you cannot just worship God

in spirit. You cannot just
say "Hey, this is wonderful! "

No. You must worship
God in spirit AND in truth.

It is such people the Father
seeks to be His worshipers.

This worship issue is a
big thing. Big issue in Genesis

and Exodus. Certainly a big
issue in the book of Revelation.

Going back to that
2nd Commandment, it says:

for yourself an idol. "

understand what that means.

What is an idol?

Let's take a look
at what an idol is.

In other words, an
image that's focused.

Now people say well, didn't
the ancient sanctuary have

Yes, it did. It had...

on the curtain there
were angels embroidered there.

other illustrations.

Those were illustrations.
You never find an Israelite

going to those angels
and kissing the angels.

You never find them bowing
down to the angels and using

them as a veneration of worship.

They were illustrations.

God doesn't seem to
prohibit illustrations.

prohibit is taking some object
